Trump plans to nominate former Missouri Congressman Billy Long to head the Internal Revenue Service. In announcing the pick, Trump highlighted Long's experience as one of the premier auctioneers in the country, a talent the congressman demonstrated while drowning out a heckler during a House committee hearing back in 2018.
Billy Long
Yeah, but before four and a quarter, four and a half. We're selling the cell phone there. Four and a quarter, four and a Half. Hit four and a half or 75 505. Five and a quarter, five and a half. I yield back.

Trump allies billionaire Elon Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will be on Capitol Hill today. They'll discuss their Department of Government Efficiency, or doge. It's not a department, it's an advisory panel, but there is a Doge caucus in the House created by Republicans. Florida Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz says he's joining.

Just because we have the conversation doesn't mean we're going to vote for it. They're going to have these conversations. We should be in the room so we can be like, hey, we're not going to support that. Okay, that one we like. Oh, nope, we're not going to do that one. We're not going to do that one. You're not going to have the votes for that. Best of luck to you.

He spoke to NPR's Morning Edition. The U.S. supreme Court is considering whether to uphold a Tennessee law banning gender affirming medical care for transgender minors. The justices heard arguments yesterday and appeared likely to uphold the ban. The court's conservative majority raised many questions, from parental rights to the safety of the treatments. The decision by the Supreme Court could affect similar laws passed in about half of US States. Hospital officials in Gaza say an Israeli strike on a displaced persons camp has killed at least 23 people, including women and children. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv.
Anas Bhabha
NPR producer in Gaza, Anas Bhabha filmed smoldering clothes, burnt cooking pots and ash. Survivors say about 20 shacks housing displaced families went up in flames from the airstrike in South Gaza. 18 year old Nadi Al Agad escaped the fire. He said it burned for two hours. It was hot, hot like hell, he said. He said his two cousins were burned alive. Israel's military said it targeted senior Hamas operatives in an area Israel designated as a shelter zone for civilians. Israel said there appeared to be secondary explosions suggesting weaponry was present. It accused Hamas of using the civilians as human shields. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

On Wall Street, Dow futures are lower. You're listening to NPR. U.S. security officials are urging telecommunications companies to step up their network security. They say there's been a huge hacking campaign backed by China and it's stolen large amounts of metadata from Americans. A smaller number of phone conversations may have been intercepted, along with some private text messages. Some of the companies that have been warned are Verizon, ATT and Lumen. The first ice free day in the Arctic Sea could come as soon as 2027. That's according to a new study in the journal Nature Communications. From member station kunc, Ray Solomon reports.

Picture the Arctic sea. Climatologist Alexandra Yan says it's supposed to look like this sea ice as far.
Rae Solomon
As the eye can see from the horizon in all directions.
Alexandra Yan
But new computer modeling using decades of climate data suggests all that ice could melt in as soon as three years. It's the first time scientists have estimated the earliest ice free Arctic day. Jan says that would accelerate global warming.
Rae Solomon
The more sea ice we remove from the Arctic, the more sunlight gets absorbed in the Arctic and that changes how much heat overall we have in the climate system.
Alexandra Yan
Jan says rapidly reducing greenhouse greenhouse gas emissions is the only way to prevent Arctic ice loss. For NPR News, I'm Rae Solomon.

– Billy Long at [00:42]
Kelly Loeffler to Lead the SBA: Former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler is chosen to oversee the Small Business Administration, signaling Trump's focus on supporting and revitalizing small businesses across the nation.
Implications: Under the Biden administration, the IRS has intensified efforts to combat tax evasion among the wealthy. Long's leadership could potentially reverse these measures, shifting the agency's focus under Trump's guidance.
Overview: Billionaire Elon Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are set to appear before Capitol Hill to discuss their initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). While DOGE is not an official department, it functions as an advisory panel with a dedicated caucus in the House formed by Republicans.
Key Points:
Purpose of DOGE: Aimed at enhancing governmental operations and reducing inefficiencies within federal processes.
Political Response: Florida Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz expressed opposition to the initiative, emphasizing the importance of engaging in discussions to prevent congressional support.
Notable Quote:

Overview: The U.S. Supreme Court is deliberating on a Tennessee law that prohibits gender-affirming medical treatments for transgender minors. The court's conservative majority is poised to uphold the ban following recent arguments.
Key Insights:
Legal and Social Implications: The decision touches on parental rights and the safety of gender-affirming treatments, with potential repercussions for similar legislation in approximately half of the United States.
Conservative Majority Concerns: The justices raised questions about the extent of parental authority in medical decisions for minors and the long-term safety and efficacy of the treatments in question.
Impact: A ruling in favor of the ban could embolden other states to enact similar laws, significantly affecting the rights and healthcare options available to transgender youth nationwide.
Overview: A recent Israeli airstrike targeted a displaced persons camp in South Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 individuals, including women and children. NPR's Daniel Estrin reported from Tel Aviv on the unfolding crisis.
Detailed Report:
Eyewitness Accounts: Anas Bhabha, an NPR producer in Gaza, captured harrowing scenes of destruction, including smoldering debris and the aftermath of the strike.
Survivor Testimony:
"It burned for two hours. It was hot, hot like hell. My two cousins were burned alive."
– Nadi Al Agad, 18 at [02:20]
Israeli Military Statement: Israel asserts that the strike targeted senior Hamas operatives within a designated civilian shelter zone. The presence of secondary explosions led them to believe that weaponry was involved, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.
Conclusion: The incident underscores the escalating tensions and the tragic loss of civilian lives amidst ongoing conflicts in the region.
Overview: U.S. security officials have raised alarms over a substantial hacking campaign attributed to Chinese-backed actors targeting major telecommunications companies. The breach has compromised significant amounts of American metadata.
Affected Entities:
Details of the Breach:
Data Compromised: While a large volume of metadata was stolen, a smaller subset of phone conversations and private text messages may have been intercepted.
Government Advisory: Officials emphasize the need for enhanced cybersecurity protocols to prevent further unauthorized access and protect sensitive information.
Market Impact: In response to these security concerns, Dow futures experienced a decline, reflecting investor apprehensions about the potential economic ramifications.
Overview: A groundbreaking study published in Nature Communications predicts that the Arctic Sea could witness its first ice-free day as early as 2027. Climatologist Alexandra Yan discusses the alarming findings based on extensive climate data analysis.
Key Insights:
Modeling and Predictions: Utilizing decades of climate data, researchers have forecasted a dramatic decline in Arctic sea ice coverage, accelerating the timeline for an ice-free Arctic.
Notable Quote:
"The more sea ice we remove from the Arctic, the more sunlight gets absorbed, changing the heat dynamics of our climate system."
– Alexandra Yan at [03:59]
Climate Implications: The rapid reduction of sea ice contributes to increased global warming, as darker ocean surfaces absorb more solar radiation, intensifying the warming effect.
Urgent Call to Action: Yan emphasizes the critical need for drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate further Arctic ice loss and its global climate repercussions.
Overview: In a significant conservation effort, five Hawaiian crows have been released into the wild on Maui. This marks a pivotal moment for the species, which had become extinct in the wild at the turn of the century.
Collaboration Efforts: The reintroduction project is a collaborative endeavor involving the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the University of Hawaii, and various conservation organizations dedicated to restoring native biodiversity.
Significance: Releasing these crows into their natural habitat aims to rebuild populations, ensuring the survival of the species and the ecological balance of Maui's environment.
