In Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Ukrainian and American delegations are meeting in Miami in an attempt to advance peace in Ukraine after talks between the U.S. and Moscow earlier this week. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports. The sides, they're still far apart on key issues like eastern Ukrainian territory partially occupied by Russia.

Ukraine still holds on to a little less than 30% of Donetsk oblast, but it's a key fortified belt that includes several cities with people who want to remain in Ukraine. Russia wants Ukraine to hand it all over. Ukrainians fear the US in its quest to seal a deal, will pressure Kyiv to abandon Donetsk. Russia is making incremental gains in eastern Ukraine, but lost 25,000 soldiers in the month of October alone. Ukraine's commander in chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, says Kyiv's strategy is to exhaust the Russians and prevent their advance. Syrsky says he does not even allow himself to consider a scenario in which Ukraine would be forced to give Russia the entire Donetsk region. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Kyiv.

The Pentagon has created a new army command at Fort Bragg. As J. Price reports, its partnership of the Trump administration's increase in foreign foreign policy, focus on the Americas and border security.

It's called the US Army Western Hemisphere Command. During the ceremony marking its creation, its first commander, General Joseph Ryan, said building it the right way was crucial for the nation.
