In a social media post, Trump said Pete Hegseth is doing very well, will be a high energy secretary of defense, and is a winner. In an interview on Fox News, Trump's press secretary, Caroline Levitt, said Trump has never wavered in his support, even as Hegseth spent the week fielding difficult questions from the senators who will decide his fate.

The American people elected President Trump to nominate outsiders who are not entrenched in Washington politics to shake up the swamp. That's exactly what Pete Hegseth is going to do. That's why the swamp is after him. President Trump stands by him 100%, Vice.

The vast majority of Americans felt that this year's presidential election was handled well. As NPR's Miles Parks reports, that's a stark change from 2020 and a reflection of how Republicans attitudes shifted once Donald Trump won.
Miles Parks
Almost 9 in 10 US voters felt this year's general election was administered well. According to the Pew Research center, that election approval rating is more than 30 points higher than it was at the same time in 2020 when Donald Trump and his allies were making false claims and sowing public distrust of elections every day. Then just 21% of Trump voters said they thought the election was run well this year. Trump stopped spreading false claims when it became clear he would win, and 93% of his voters now say the election was administered fairly. Election workers say that from an administrative perspective, the two elections were very similar. Miles Parks, NPR News, Washington.

Has upheld a law that would ban TikTok in January unless it's sold. NPR's Bobby Allen reports that President elect Donald Trump once wanted to get rid of TikTok, but now he's promising to find a way to save the popular video app.

The federal appeals court in Washington wrote that TikTok's First Amendment arguments failed since lawmakers view the app as a national security threat. Authorities have said the app is vulnerable to manipulation by the Chinese government because TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is based in Beijing. The law states that TikTok is set to be banned on January 19, but the app's future is now uncertain. When Trump assumes office, he may be able to extend the ban date. He can also order the law not to be enforced. Tech experts say it's possible for Trump to cut a deal with China to have TikTok sold off to American investors. Bobby Allen and PR News.

Private labs will also have to report any positive findings. The testing program is launching in California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon and Pennsylvania. Previous research has found no viable H5N1 virus in the milk sold on store shelves, which has been pasteurized recently. Raw milk being sold in California was recalled after bird flu was detected. While the risks entirely clear, scientists say it's possible consuming that could lead to an infection. Will Stone, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Episode Summary – December 6, 2024, 11 PM EST
Released on December 7, 2024
Overview: President-elect Donald Trump faces challenges in securing the nomination of former Fox News host Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary amid serious allegations. Hegseth denies accusations of alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct, and mismanagement during his tenure leading two veterans organizations.
Key Points:
Allegations and Denials: Pete Hegseth is actively denying the allegations against him as he strives to maintain his nomination for Defense Secretary.
Trump's Support: In a social media post at [00:38], Trump lauded Hegseth, stating, "Pete Hegseth is doing very well, will be a high energy secretary of defense, and is a winner." Additionally, Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Levitt, affirmed unwavering support despite Hegseth facing tough Senate questions.
Backlash from the Swamp: JD Vance, a President-elect supporter, emphasized the outsider status of Hegseth, stating at [00:59], "The American people elected President Trump to nominate outsiders who are not entrenched in Washington politics to shake up the swamp. That's exactly what Pete Hegseth is going to do." Vance reinforced this sentiment at [01:12], adding, "We've got his back."
Implications: Hegseth's nomination process exemplifies the tensions between political loyalty and accountability. The strong backing from Trump and allies like Vance suggests a strategic push to solidify support within Republican ranks, potentially influencing the Senate's decision.
Overview: New data reveals a significant increase in American voters' approval of the administration of the 2024 presidential election compared to the contentious 2020 cycle.
Key Points:
High Approval Ratings: According to a report by Miles Parks at [01:34], "Almost 9 in 10 US voters felt this year's general election was administered well." This marks a more than 30-point increase from the 2020 approval ratings during heightened misinformation campaigns.
Shift in Republican Sentiment: Interestingly, only 21% of Trump voters initially believed the 2024 election was conducted properly; however, this figure has surged to 93% following the cessation of false claims about election integrity.
Consistent Administrative Quality: Election officials note that both the 2020 and 2024 elections were similar from an administrative standpoint, further validating the current public confidence.
Implications: The improved perception of election administration reflects a potential healing of partisan divisions and restoration of trust in the electoral process. This shift could have enduring effects on voter turnout and engagement in future elections.
Overview: A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., has upheld a law that threatens to ban TikTok unless it undergoes a sale. This decision poses significant uncertainty regarding the app's future in the United States.
Key Points:
Legal Ruling: At [02:27], Bobby Allen reports that the court dismissed TikTok’s First Amendment defenses, labeling the app a national security threat due to its Chinese ownership by ByteDance.
Government Intentions: The law mandates a ban effective January 19, with possibilities for Trump to either extend the ban or halt its enforcement upon assuming office.
Potential Resolutions: Experts suggest that Trump could negotiate a sale of TikTok to American investors to prevent the ban, offering a political and economic pathway to retain the popular platform.
Implications: TikTok's potential removal underscores ongoing tensions between national security concerns and digital freedoms. The outcome will have broad implications for international tech companies operating in the U.S. and the regulatory landscape governing foreign-owned apps.
Overview: Wall Street exhibited a varied performance, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipping, while the NASDAQ and S&P 500 showed modest gains.
Key Points:
Market Movements: As reported at [03:03], the Dow fell by 123 points, contrasting with the NASDAQ’s increase of 159 points and a slight uptick in the S&P 500.
Economic Indicators: These fluctuations reflect investor reactions to ongoing economic data, policy changes, and corporate earnings reports, painting a complex picture of the current financial climate.
Implications: The mixed results highlight volatility and investor uncertainty, potentially influenced by political developments such as the upcoming nomination decisions and tech industry regulations like the TikTok case.
Overview: The Department of Agriculture has intensified efforts to detect and prevent bird flu contamination in the nation's milk supply, following recent findings and recalls.
Key Points:
New Testing Requirements: Will Stone reports at [03:32], "This will give regulators the power to test samples from dairy farms or when the milk is being transported or processed." The initiative targets high-risk states including California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.
Traceability Measures: Upon detection of bird flu, the USDA will trace the virus's source, ensuring rapid response to prevent widespread contamination.
Public Safety Assurance: Despite the recent recall of raw milk in California due to bird flu, past research indicates no viable H5N1 virus presence in store-bought pasteurized milk, mitigating public health concerns.
Implications: Enhanced monitoring safeguards public health while maintaining consumer confidence in dairy products. The proactive approach aligns with broader agricultural safety standards and disease prevention strategies.
Overview: Authorities in New York have recovered the backpack of the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of the United Healthcare CEO. Evidence suggests the shooter may have fled the city.
Key Points:
Evidence Recovery: At [04:13], Tamara Keith reports that the backpack was found in Central Park following the tragic incident earlier in the week.
Movement of the Shooter: Video footage captured at [04:25] shows the gunman navigating Central Park and subsequently taking a taxi to a bus terminal, indicating a deliberate attempt to exit the city.
Investigation Status: Police believe the shooter has likely left New York City, intensifying search efforts to apprehend the suspect.
Implications: The recovery of the backpack provides crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation, while the shooter's potential escape underscores challenges in ensuring public safety and swift law enforcement response in such incidents.
Overview: Lionel Messi has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of Major League Soccer (MLS) for 2024, achieving the accolade despite missing nearly half of the regular season due to injuries and international duties.
Key Points:
Outstanding Performance: Messi scored a league-high 20 goals and provided 16 assists over 19 matches, showcasing his exceptional talent and impact on the field.
Recognition Amid Absences: His ability to maintain top performance levels despite missing 15 of Inter Miami's 34 regular season matches highlights his significance to the team and the league.
Implications: Messi's MVP recognition reaffirms his status as one of the premier soccer talents globally and boosts MLS's profile internationally. His presence continues to draw attention and elevate the competitive standard within the league.
