NPR News in New York City. I'm Dwalissai Kowtow. President elect Donald Trump says he will appoint venture capitalist David Sachs to be the White House's artificial intelligence and crypt cryptocurrencies are. As NPR's Bobby Allen reports, Sachs is a close ally of Elon Musk, a top Trump advisor.
Bobby Allen
David Sachs is a venture capitalist associated with the so called PayPal Mafia, a group of right leaning technologists who helped found payment processor PayPal in the late 1990s. In recent years, Sachs has helped fundraise for Trump and attacked what he sees as woke politics on his podcast All In Promise Post. As AI and crypto czar, Sachs is expected to oversee the dismantling of tech industry regulations. He will also give crypto advocates a direct line into the White House and work alongside Elon Musk, a close friend of Sachs. In his post on Truth Social announcing the role, Trump also said Sachs will safeguard free speech online and fight the censorship of big tech. Bobby Allen, NPR News.

A major freeway in North Baltimore is shut down along with the light rail in that area because of what officials are calling a massive fire with flames as high as 30ft.

The wind again is kicking up and that's presenting our most major challenge at this point.

About 100 firefighters are on the scene. A manhunt continues for the gunman who fatally shot the CEO of United Healthcare in New York City on Wednesday. And Piers Quill Lawrence reports. Police have released a photo of a person of interest.

Police have released a security camera photo of a man wearing a hooded coat with his mask down and have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. They're treating the murder as a targeted killing, but they've yet to announce a motive in the death of 50 year old Brian Thompson, who ran the country's largest health insurer, United Healthcare. Police say the killer waited for Thompson for a few minutes outside a Midtown hotel before shooting him repeatedly in the back. The shooter paused when his gun jammed, cleared the jam and then continued firing. Police confirmed to member station WNYC that bullet casings recovered at the scene were inscribed with words like deny, depose and defend. Quil Lawrence, NPR News, New York.

Three U.S. astronauts and one from Canada must sit tight for another year because of concerns over a heat shield that is built to protect the astronauts as they enter deep space and return to Earth on NASA's Artemis 2 mission spacecraft. That mission was hopeful to lift off in late 2025, but now NASA officials say the launch may not happen until possibly April of 2026. From NPR News, this is NPR. Canada is looking to donate its unwanted guns to Ukraine. This comes after its public safety minister, Dominic LeBlanc, announced a new ban of more than 300 assault style firearms, saying fire designed for the battlefield plainly do not belong in our communities. Defense Minister Bill Blair said he is working with President Volodymyr Zelensky's government to see how these newly banned guns can be used to help fight the war against Russia. He added, every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory. But an opposition leader calls this restriction a stunt that attacks licensed and law abiding hunters and sports shooters. Species are adapted to a particular climate in a particular place. When the climate changes, many species may not be able to move or adapt in time. NPR's Jonathan Lambert reports. This puts them at risk of extinction.
Jonathan Lambert
A new study in Science took stock of nearly 500 previous studies that estimated how various species might fare under future climates. Almost 2% of species worldwide could go extinct by the end of the century if countries meet the Paris climate agreement warming targets. That percentage grows significantly with each additional degree of warming. Under the worst case scenario of 5 degrees of warming, about 1 in 3 species could disappear. Amphibians are at greatest risk of extinction in a warmer world, along with species that live on mountains and islands. Jonathan Lambert, NPR News.
