Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Lebanon has closed all of its land borders with Syria except for the main one that connects Beirut with the capital of Syria. NPR's Lauren Frere reports. The decision to shut most of the border crossing came hours after Israel launched airstrikes into the region.
Lauren Fryer
The Israeli military published black and white aerial video of buildings exploding on the Lebanon Syria border. It says its fighter jets have been targeting supply routes Hezbollah uses to smuggle weapons from Iran across Syria and into Lebanon. Lebanon's state news agency says the country's northernmost border crossing with Syri, Syria, was heavily damaged and the road to it severed. That's also the border crossing closest to where Syrian rebels have been seizing territory for anyone fleeing that fighting. Only one other border crossing to Lebanon remains open. Closer to Damascus. Israeli airstrikes have continued here even after a ceasefire took effect last week. Israel says it's acting to enforce that truce, not break it. Lauren Fryer, NPR News, Beirut.

It's npr. A court in Romania has annulled the first round of the country's presidential election. NPR's Rob Schmitz reports. This comes after declassified intelligence showed evidence of Russ intervention.
Rob Schmitz
The unprecedented decision by Romania's Constitutional Court to annul last month's presidential election results came after surprise. Far right candidate Kalin Georgescu emerged as a frontrunner despite being an outsider who had declared zero campaign spending. The results stunned Romania's Western allies. Declassified intelligence from the Romanian National Security Council alleged that Russia had run a coordinated online campaign across platforms like TikTok and Telegram to promote Gugescu and had hacked into the country's electoral infrastructure. The court requested the government set a new date to rerun the first round of the election. Rob Schmitz, NPR News, Berlin.

Lebanon has taken decisive action by shutting down all its land borders with Syria except for the primary crossing that links Beirut with Syria's capital. This move comes in the wake of intensified Israeli military activity in the region.
Lauren Fryer reports from Beirut that "the Israeli military published black and white aerial video of buildings exploding on the Lebanon-Syria border" (00:42). The airstrikes are part of Israel's efforts to dismantle supply routes used by Hezbollah to transport weapons from Iran through Syria into Lebanon. The Lebanese state news agency confirmed significant damage to the northernmost border crossing with Syria, rendering the road impassable. This particular crossing is the most proximate to areas where Syrian rebels have been gaining ground, impacting those attempting to flee the conflict.
Despite a recent ceasefire, Israeli jets have persisted in their operations, with Israel asserting that their actions aim to "enforce that truce, not break it" (00:42). The closure of the borders is expected to have significant implications for regional stability and humanitarian efforts.
In a groundbreaking decision, Romania's Constitutional Court has nullified the results of the first round of the country's presidential election. Rob Schmitz reports from Berlin that this unprecedented move follows the revelation of declassified intelligence pointing to substantial Russian meddling in the electoral process.
"The unprecedented decision by Romania's Constitutional Court to annul last month's presidential election results came after surprise," Schmitz explains (03:32). The far-right candidate, Kalin Georgescu, had unexpectedly surged to the forefront despite being an outsider with no campaign funding. Western allies were taken aback by Georgescu's rise.
Declassified intelligence from the Romanian National Security Council unveiled that Russia orchestrated a coordinated online campaign across platforms like TikTok and Telegram to bolster Georgescu's candidacy. Additionally, there were successful hacks into Romania's electoral infrastructure, compromising the integrity of the election. As a result, the court has mandated the government to schedule a new date to conduct the first round of voting again, aiming to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
The United States is grappling with the tragic assassination of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Health Care, which has sent shockwaves through the corporate sector. Maria Aspen reports from New York that police continue their manhunt for the gunman who targeted Thompson outside a New York City hotel on Wednesday.
"Police say that Brian Thompson was specifically targeted in a premeditated attack" (01:46). Thompson led the largest health insurance company in the nation, a sector where public discontent with insurers is notably high. Surveillance footage revealed that Thompson was shot multiple times from behind while he was alone, highlighting significant security lapses.
In response to the attack, many large corporations are re-evaluating their security measures. Philip Klein, a security firm operator in Texas, noted, "Our clients are calling us like crazy. We're getting new clients calling us like crazy" (02:17). This surge reflects a growing concern among businesses about executive safety. Additionally, several healthcare companies have proactively removed photos and personal information of their executives from their websites to enhance personal security (02:23).
In a strategic move to address the burgeoning fields of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, President Elect Donald Trump has appointed David Sachs, a seasoned Silicon Valley venture capitalist, as the White House's AI and Crypto Czar. Rafael Nam reports that this announcement coincides with Bitcoin reaching a historic value of $100,000 for the first time.
Rafael Nam elaborates on Bitcoin's evolution, stating, "It's only over 15 years old and it's basically a digital currency made up of computer coding. It was created by somebody or maybe a group of people going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto" (02:54). The mysterious creator(s) of Bitcoin, known as Satoshi Nakamoto, remain unidentified to this day. Bitcoin was conceptualized during the global financial crisis with the intention of providing a decentralized currency "for the people."
Sachs's appointment is seen as an effort to bridge the gap between innovative financial technologies and regulatory frameworks, ensuring that the White House remains at the forefront of technological advancements while addressing associated risks.
