In New York City, I'm Doua Halisai Kautel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advisory committee has voted 8 to 3 to roll back its universal recommendation to start hepatitis B immunization at birth, a GUID practiced for more than three decades. NPR's Rob Stein explains the new, more narrow guidance for newborns.

The committee voted to only urge that babies born to women who test positive for the virus get vaccinated at birth. Those who test negative or whose status is unknown would be counseled to talk to their doctors about waiting until their kids are at least two months old. The new recommendations would also urge parents to talk to their doctors about testing their kids first before necessarily getting the second and third doses that are usually given for full protection.

NPR's Rob Stein. This committee of CDC advisers was put together by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Who has long questioned many vaccines and has launched a major review of all childhood vaccinations. Congresswoman Adelita Grijalda says she was pepper sprayed during an ICE raid on Friday in Tucson. The Southern Arizona Democrat was sworn in last month, weeks after winning the special election for the seat. Elisa Resnick of member station KGZZ reports.

In a video posted on X, Grijalva says she was sprayed in the face while attempting to get more information about an ICE raid at a popular restaurant in Tucson.

We just came up on a community that was protecting their people. We had, I would say, maybe 40 ICE agents, most of them masked in several vehicles.
Elisa Resnick
Video on social media shows masked agents firing pepper balls as plumes of smoke engulf the road. ICE confirmed multiple people were in custody after special agents and The IRS executed 16 federal search warrants across Southern Arizona. The agency did not immediately respond to questions about the use of pepper spray. For NPR News, I'm Elisa Resnick in Tucson.

A new report shows inflation remained stubbornly high in September, but as NPR's Scott Horsey reports, that's not expected to stop the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates next week.
Scott Horsley
The Commerce Department's inflation yardstick, which is closely watched by the Fed, shows prices in September were up 2.8% from a year ago. That's a slightly larger annual increase than the previous month. But core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, was slightly lower than in August. Investors think the Fed is more concerned about weakness in the job market than rising prices right now. So policymakers are expected to lower their benchmark interest rate by another quarter percentage point next week. A survey by the University of Michigan shows consumers are feeling slightly better about the economic outlook than they were a month ago, but sentiment is still pretty gloomy compared to this time last year.
