In a wide ranging interview with Politico, Trump denigrated the Western European democracies that until now have been the United States staunchest allies. Trump said Europe doesn't know what to do. Trump is pushing Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept his latest peace plan, which includes several core Russian demands. It would force Ukraine to give up territory to Russia, put limits on Ukraine's military and restrict the country's sovereignty. Mara Liasson, NPR News.

A federal judge has agreed to release grand jury and other investigative materials from the prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime confidant of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. NPR's Ryan Lucas has the latest.
Ryan Lucas (1:25)
The Justice Department in November asked a federal judge in New York to release the investigative materials from Ghislaine Maxwell's sex trafficking case after Congress passed the Epstein files transparently. Now US District Court Judge Paul Engelmayr has granted that request and authorized the department to publicly release the grand jury materials as well as the investigative records while redacting personally identifiable or other victim related information. A similar request to make public investigative records from Epstein's prosecution in New York is still pending before a different federal judge. Maxwell is currently serving a 20 year prison sentence for sex trafficking and other offenses. And Epstein died in a federal lockup in 2019. Ryan Lucas, NPR News, Washington.

The U.S. supreme Court is weighing a Trump backed appeal to end limits on party spending in federal elections. The justices are revisiting a 2001 decision that upheld a provision of federal election law that dates back more than half a century. High court's also considering the administration's challenge to a 90 year old decision limiting presidential control over independent agencies. Policymakers from the Fed are holding a two day meeting in Washington, D.C. nPR's Scott Horsley reports.
