The Supreme Court has denied President Elect Donald Trump's latest attempt to lift gag order stemming from his New York criminal trial. Here's NPR's Yamita Bastillo reporting.
Ximena Bustillo
The court decided to uphold the remainder of the gag order, which bars Trump from speaking about prosecutors, court staff or their families until Trump is sentenced in the case. That sentencing is now indefinitely paused while Trump tries to dismiss the case. At the start of the trial, New York Judge Juan Marchand imposed a gag order that barred from speaking about witnesses and jurors, too. After a jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Mershon partially lifted the order. Still, Trump has fought to fully lift the order, arguing that it limits him from speaking freely about the trial. During the trial, he was fined several times, amounting to $10,000 for violating the order. Ximena Bustillo, NPR News, New York.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made the remarks after meeting in Kyiv with Friedrich Mertz, a candidate for German chancellor. The idea to deploy foreign peacekeepers to Ukraine comes from French President Emmanuel Macron. Zelensky said such deployments could protect Ukraine in the short term. But he added Ukraine must know when it will join both NATO and the European Union before embracing this plan. Zelensky said he planned to call President President Biden to lobby for inviting Ukraine to join the security alliance before Biden's term ends. President Elect Donald Trump says he might withdraw the U.S. from NATO.

State Administration for Market Regulation Regulation says it's investigating Nvidia under China's anti monopoly law. It says the company is suspected of violating commitments it made when it acquired the Israeli American firm mellanox Technologies in 2020. That deal was approved at the time by the Chinese regulator with certain conditions, including that supply to China would be insured. Last week, the Biden administration imposed new regulations on exports of chips and chip making equipment to Chinese companies, the latest in a string of similar steps in recent years. Beijing retaliated by banning the export of several key rare minerals to the United States. Nvidia's shares dropped more than 2% in early trading after the news. Jon Ruich, NPR News, Shanghai.

Giles Snyder transitions to the legal battleground surrounding President-Elect Donald Trump and his attempts to lift a gag order related to his New York criminal trial.
Supreme Court Decision:
Yamita Bustillo reports that the Supreme Court has denied Trump's latest bid to lift the gag order, which restricts him from discussing prosecutors, court staff, or their families until sentencing.
Trial Background:
The gag order, initially imposed by Judge Juan Marchand, was a response to Trump's conduct during the trial, which culminated in a jury conviction on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. Despite partial lifting by a magistrate judge, Trump continues to argue that the restrictions infringe on his free speech rights, leading to multiple fines totaling $10,000 for violations (01:32).

During a meeting in Kyiv with Friedrich Mertz, a German chancellor candidate, Zelensky expressed openness to deploying peacekeeping troops, contingent upon Ukraine's accession to NATO and the European Union.

Regulatory Scrutiny:
John Ruich reports that China's State Administration for Market Regulation has launched an investigation into Nvidia under the country's anti-monopoly laws. The probe centers on Nvidia's 2020 acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, where Nvidia allegedly failed to adhere to commitments ensuring continued supply to the Chinese market.
US-China Trade Tensions:
This investigation follows recent US government restrictions on exporting chips and related equipment to China, part of a broader strategy to curb China's technological advancements. In retaliation, Beijing has banned the export of several critical rare minerals essential to US industries.
Market Impact:
Nvidia's stock experienced a 2% drop in early trading following the announcement, reflecting investor concerns over the regulatory challenges and strained US-China relations (03:34).
Giles Snyder reports on the ongoing legal battle between TikTok, owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance, and the Biden administration regarding proposed restrictions on the platform.
Legal Maneuvering:
TikTok has filed an emergency appeal with a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., seeking to "bar the Biden administration from enforcing" a law that could result in a complete ban by mid-January if not reviewed by the Supreme Court.
Governmental Actions:
