Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. U.S. attorney General Pam Bondi says the FBI and the Coast Guard have seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. As NPR's Quill Lawrence reports, the U.S. has also sanctioned Venezuela's oil industry.
Quill Lawrence (0:35)
Bondi posted a video on social media showing US Forces boarding the vast oil tanker by helicopter. She said US Agents executed a seizure warrant on board and that the tanker has been sanctioned for years and is known to smuggle crude oil from Venezuela and also Iran. President Trump has ratcheted up pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom he accuses of narco trafficking. The US has assembled the largest naval fleet in decades off the Venezuelan coast and offered $50 million for Maduro's arrest. This news came as pro democracy activist Maria Corinna Machado snuck out of hiding in Venezuela en route to Norway to collect the Nobel Peace Prize. Quill Lawrence, NPR News.

The Department of Homeland Security is preparing to buy its own fleet of Boeing 737 jets to use for deportation flights. As NPR's Joe Rose tells us, the contract could allow ICE to speed up the pace of its deportations.
Joel Rose (1:31)
DHS will spend $140 million to buy the six Boeing 737 jets, according to the Washington Post, which was first to report on the contract. U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement has typically relied on charter planes to carry out deportation flights. Now ICE is poised to operate its own fleet with planes purchased from a Virginia based company called Daedalus Aviation, a company, according to the Post. DHS has not confirmed any details about the contract, but spokesperson Trisha McLaughlin said the move would save taxpayers money in part by allowing ICE to use more efficient flight patterns. The Trump administration has operated more than 1700 deportation flights since taking office, according to an independent monitor, the most in at least five years. Joel Rose, NPR News, Washington.

Federal Reserve policymakers have cut the central bank's key interest rate by a quarter point. As NPR's Scott Horsley reports, the decision is based on limited data on hiring and inflation.
Scott Horsley (2:27)
There were three dissenting votes, and they came from both sides. Two members of the committee wanted to hold rates steady today, and a third wanted to go with an even bigger half point rate cut. Now, that's unusual for a group that usually tries to operate with a lot of consensus. In fact, it's the first time in six years that there was this much disagreement on a rate vote. But Powell says, look, that's okay.
