O.Com live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump spoke to a rally of supporters last night in central Pennsylvania. He was supposed to discuss issues of affordability. And NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports Trump also strayed far from his economic topic.
Danielle Kurtzleben
Trump gave the speech in front of a large sign reading lower prices, bigger paychecks. At the same time, he dismissed the affordability message. Democrats have been focused on the new word is affordability.
Donald Trump
So they look at the camera and they say this election is all about affordability.
Danielle Kurtzleben
Polls show that voters are deeply concerned about the cost of living as Trump's tariffs have pushed up prices on a wide range of goods. The Trump's speech frequently veered into culture war issues and personal insults against opponents. Trump at one point took aim at Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, an immigrant from Somalia, prompting the crowd to chant, send her back. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.

A bipartisan group of top lawmakers got briefed yesterday on the Trump administration's boat strikes in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean. At issue is a second strike on a suspected drug boat that killed survivors inside it. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer says he asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth if he would release the unedited video of that strike.
Chuck Schumer
His answer, we have to study it. Well, in my view, they've studied it long enough, and Congress ought to be able to see it. I told him that every member of Congress, so many members of Congress, Democrat and Republican, had a right to see it, wanted to see it and should see it.
Korva Coleman
Some Republicans agreed, including North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
Thom Tillis
We gotta release the video. Look, we gotta get the Epstein files released. We got to get any videos that do not in any way compromise mission integrity down there.
Korva Coleman
President Trump initially said he was open to releasing the video. Now he says he'll leave that up to Hegseth. Many Afghan soldiers who fought under CIA leadership during the war in Afghanistan have struggled since fleeing to the U.S. some believe they did not receive enough support in navigating the American complicated immigration system. NPR's Brian Mann has more.

The Afghan accused of shooting two National Guard soldiers was part of a CIA zero unit fighting the Taliban. Some zero unit fighters, including Daoud, now say after coming to the US they didn't receive help getting permanent asylum or work visas that would allow them to start new lives.
Daoud (Afghan CIA unit member)
It's like that feeling of like you did something, but nobody is appreciating. And the promise that you that was given to you by your employer was a fake promise.
Brian Mann
Daoud spoke on condition of anonymity because he fears for the safety of families still living in Afghanistan. Daoud and an aid group called FAMIL that works with zero unit fighters say at least four men have taken their own lives since coming to the U.S. the CIA declined comment. Brian Mann, NPR News.

This year's winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will not accept her award this hour in person. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been in hiding. She also faces a travel ban, and she's not supposed to leave Venezuela. The Norwegian Nobel Institute says that she will be in Oslo and safe, but Machado will not attend the ceremony. A new study says the top science priority for the first human mission to Mars should be to search for evidence of existing or past life. The report is from the National Academies of Sciences, engineering and medicine. NPR's Nell Greenfield Boys reports. NASA requested the advice from its independent experts.

The new report lays out how to maximize the scientific return from a future mission that sends astronauts to the Red Planet. It suggests several possible exploration campaigns describing exactly what kind of crew and equipment would be required. The top ranked option, for example, would involve a human landing lasting more than 30 days on Mars, plus a longer one lasting about a year, and would require a large suite of science instruments. But another possible mission would involve setting up a drilling rig at one site and drilling down deep into the Martian crust in search of liquid water where microbes might live. Weather forecasters have posted flood cautions for the Pacific Northwest and winter weather advisories as far east as the Dakotas. They say an atmospheric river is funneling a winter storm system into the region. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News, in Washington.
