Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. The U.S. senate has rejected two competing health care proposals from both parties. The votes came days before enhanced subsidies for Obamacare plans expire. More from NPR's Sam Greenglass.
Sam Greenglass
Millions of Americans are set to see their premiums skyrocket if the pandemic era subsidies expire. Democrats put forward a three year extension of the subsidies. Four Republicans voted with the Democrats, but not enough. This is Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia.
Raphael Warnock
The consequences for ordinary people will be that they will have to delay response to their health care. And for many people, they will literally pay with their lives.
Sam Greenglass
Republican leadership put forward a plan which also failed to provide up to $1,500 in health savings accounts for high deductible ACA plans. Some members say these votes will help spark more negotiations. But time is running out for Americans deciding whether to keep their coverage. Sam Greenglass, NPR News, Washington.

In Indiana, lawmakers have defied President Trump by rejecting a Republican friendly congressional map. Trump wants several states to create additional GOP seats in the US House ahead of the 2020 terms. Ben Thorpe of member station WFYI has more.
Ben Thorpe
The map was intended to hand Republicans two additional congressional seats out of Indiana, part of a national redistricting push to keep Republican control of the US House. But Indiana senators voted no, arguing that it would be bad for the country as a whole. Republican State Senator Spencer Deary said his vote was to uphold conservative principles.
Sam Greenglass
Living in a free constitutional republic means we empower voters to make those decisions, and we accept their will no matter what.
Ben Thorpe
Republican Mike Young expressed his disappointment.
Raphael Warnock
We've cost our nation. We don't know how much, but we've cost our nation.
Ben Thorpe
Senate leaders say redistricting cannot be brought up again in Indiana before midterms. For NPR News, I'm Ben Thorpe in Indianapolis.

President Trump has signed an executive order to override state laws regulating artificial intelligence. As NPR's Bobby Allen reports, the tech industry lobbied for the move.
Bobby Allen
The order instructs the Justice Department to challenge state AI laws it views as burdensome. States this year have passed more than 100 laws attempting to regul AI, while Congress hasn't passed any. Trump says a patchwork of state laws could give China an edge in the air race.
Raphael Warnock
Every time you make a change, and it could be a very reasonable change, you still won't get it approved if you have to go to 50 states. So this centralizes it.
Bobby Allen
But trying to override state AI laws has been met with opposition from both parties and prominent members of the MAGA movement. White House AI and crypto czar David Sachs helped advance the order. Sachs is a longtime venture capitalist with deep connections to Silicon Valley. Bobby Allen, NPR News.

A federal judge in Maryland ordered his immediate relief today, saying the government can't hold people indefinitely. The Justice Department is condemning the rule and calling it judicial activism. If you're tuning in to pop music stations, it should come is no surprise that one of the oldest holiday hits is back on top of the charts. NPR's Stephen Thompson has details.

For anyone who watches the Billboard charts in December, it should come as no surprise that the number one song in the country belongs to Mariah Carey.
Raphael Warnock
All I Want for Christmas is you.
Capital One Announcer
The song, which came out in 1994, didn't actually top the Billboard Hot 100 until 2019, but it's made an annual pilgrimage to number one ever since, thanks in large part to streaming. All I Want for Christmas is yous has now topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 very non consecutive weeks. That ties an all time record held by Lil Nas X's Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus and a blockbuster from last year, a bar song, tipsy. Stephen Thompson, NPR News.
