In Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. In Tel Aviv this weekend, thousands were back on the streets calling on the Israeli government to negotiate the release of hostages still held by Hamas more than a year after the October 7th attack in which more than 1200 civilians were killed. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza are intense. He made his comments in Jordan at the end of a Middle east trip that focused mostly on the situation in Syria. As NPR's Michelle Kellerman reports, Blinken huddled.

He says Israel has achieved its core military objectives, degrading Hamas so that it can't repeat the kind of attack it led on Israel on October 7th of last year. Hamas still holds 100 hostages, seven of whom are Americans. Michelle Kiliman, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Secretary Blinken also said U.S. officials are in direct contact with the Syrian rebel group that led the overthrow of Bashar al Assad. Blinken is the first U.S. official to publicly acknowledge the contacts. The U.S. and other countries have designated the group, known as HTS, as a foreign terrorist organization. Some San Francisco residents woke up Saturday morning to a notification from the National Weather Service warning of a possible tornado during a week windy and rainy storm in the Bay Area. Now over, but the National Weather Service says it's the first time non coastal parts of San Francisco have ever been under a tornado warning. Radar showed a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado with winds of 45 mph. Dalton Beringer is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Most of the issues that we're going to deal with tornadoes are going to be land falling waterspouts. So in this case, it kind of looked like that was the case with the storm and that's why we issued the tornado warning.

Weather Service says a tornado struck San Francisco 20 years ago, but no advance warning was given, likely because there was no clear signature on radar. Storms across the US this weekend brought a major ice storm to Iowa and eastern Nebraska, leading to treacherous driving conditions. More than 33 inches of snow reported near Orchard Park, New York. This is NPR News. People in the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, conditions there are apocalyptic. After Cyclone Cheeto tour through the islands, at least two deaths have been reported, but with whole neighborhoods apparently flattened, a higher number of casualties is feared. Into Mayotte on Saturday, the worst storm to hit the islands for almost a century. Videos have shown whole neighbourhoods of shacks, common housing for Mayotte's 300,000 residents torn down by extreme winds with people picking through the rubble 8,000 kilometers away. In Paris, France's new prime minister, Francois Bayreut held an emergency response meeting. His interior minister spoke of an emerging tragedy on Mayotte. He said it would take days to establish how many people had been killed. Thankfully, the airport is still said to be able to receive military planes, but communication is patchy and people have been struggling to contact relatives.

Hostages Held by Hamas: In Tel Aviv, thousands took to the streets this weekend, demanding that the Israeli government negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas. This protest occurs over a year after the devastating October 7th attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 civilians.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken's Diplomatic Push: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is intensifying negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages in Gaza. Speaking from Jordan, Blinken emphasized the critical nature of these talks. He stated at [01:19] “This is the moment to finally conclude that agreement.” His recent Middle East trip primarily addressed the situation in Syria, but the Gaza conflict remains a significant focus.
Achievements and Ongoing Challenges: Blinken acknowledged that Israel has met its primary military objectives by degrading Hamas capabilities, aiming to prevent future attacks similar to those on October 7th last year. Despite these efforts, Hamas continues to hold 100 hostages, including seven Americans. Blinken remains optimistic about reaching an agreement to end the hostilities and secure the hostages’ release.
Direct Contact with HTS: In a notable development, Secretary Blinken revealed that U.S. officials are now in direct communication with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Syrian rebel group responsible for overthrowing Bashar al-Assad's regime. This marks the first public acknowledgment of such contacts, despite HTS being designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. and other nations.
Implications for Syrian Governance: The U.S. engagement aims to support the establishment of a new Syrian government following Assad’s downfall. Blinken communicated a supportive message to the Syrian populace: “Our message to the Syrian people is this, we want them to succeed and we're prepared to help them do so.” This indicates a strategic pivot in U.S. policy towards facilitating political stabilization in Syria.
San Francisco Tornado Warning: Residents of San Francisco experienced an unprecedented weather event early Saturday morning when the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for areas typically unaffected by such phenomena. Lakshmi Sara from KQED reported that this was “the first time non-coastal parts of San Francisco have ever been under a tornado warning” ([02:13]). Meteorologist Dalton Beringer explained that the warning was due to a thunderstorm capable of producing tornadoes with winds reaching 45 mph.
Historical Context and Impact: Beringer noted that while San Francisco Airport recorded an 83 mph wind gust, this event was rare, with the last known tornado striking the city two decades ago without any advance warning. The storm also brought heavy snowfall, with more than 33 inches reported near Orchard Park, New York, and significant ice accumulation in Iowa and eastern Nebraska, leading to hazardous driving conditions.
Impact of Cyclone Cheeto: The French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte is reeling from Cyclone Cheeto, described by BBC correspondent Will Leonardo as “the worst storm to hit the islands for almost a century” ([03:38]). The cyclone has caused widespread destruction, flattening entire neighborhoods and leaving the island's 300,000 residents facing apocalyptic conditions.
Casualties and Emergency Response: At least two deaths have been confirmed, but authorities fear the actual number may be higher due to the extensive damage. In Paris, French Prime Minister François Bayreut convened an emergency response meeting to address the crisis. The interior minister highlighted the severe communication disruptions, stating that “it would take days to establish how many people had been killed”. Despite the devastation, the airport remains operational for military aid, aiding in relief efforts.
Community Resilience: Residents are depicted sifting through debris in an attempt to locate loved ones and salvage what remains of their homes. The extreme winds have left little infrastructure intact, creating a significant challenge for emergency services attempting to provide immediate assistance.
Travis Hunter’s Achievement: In a celebratory moment in New York, Colorado’s Travis Hunter was honored with the Heisman Trophy, college football’s highest accolade. Hunter's outstanding performance this season, excelling both offensively as a receiver and defensively as a cornerback, earned him 552 first-place votes. He joins the late running back Roshan Salaam as the only Colorado players to receive this prestigious award.
Hunter’s Reaction: Overwhelmed with emotion, Hunter expressed his gratitude and disbelief at receiving the honor: “First I want to say I thank God, man. I never thought I would be in this position. It's crazy. Your belief take you a long way. It was actually crazy, man. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.” ([04:24])
Significance of the Award: Hunter's dual-role performance and leadership on the field have set him apart as a remarkable athlete, highlighting his versatility and dedication. His achievement not only brings pride to Colorado but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring football players nationwide.
