Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. A high ranking Syrian official says his government wants cordial relations with Israel and would like the United States to help mediate that process. The request echoes previous comments by the newly installed leader of Syria after the ouster, Abishar Al Assad. NPR's Hadil Al Shalchi spoke with the governor in Damascus and has this report.
Hadil Al Shalchi
In a wide ranging interview with npr, the newly appointed governor of Damascus said that Syria's new government has, quote, no problems with Israel. Governor Meher Marwan said it was natural for Israel to feel fear when the new government took power, but that Syria does not want to meddle with Israel's security. HTS leader Ahmad Al Sharra has previously said the new government does not want conflict with Israel. Marwan called on the United States to influence Israel to let it know that Syrians are a people who want peace and not, quote, disputes with Israel. A U.S. official told NPR that this message has been relayed to Israeli officials. Hadil Al Shalchi, NPR News, Damascus.

For the second straight year, the city of Bethlehem was quiet on Christmas Day. In years past, thousands of tourists flocked to Major Square, the traditional birthplace of Jesus. But the mood there today is somber amid the war in Gaza. NPR's Emily Fang reports.

At Christmas Mass in the Catholic section of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, worshippers and visitors alike crowded into the pews. Nearby, nuns and pilgrims chanted prayers and sang songs in an underground grotto and the church's Greek Orthodox section. This grotto is believed to be the cave where Jesus Christ was born, but the church in Manger Square in front of it was relatively empty. Celebrations have been muted to mourn the more than 45,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza. Emily Feng, NPR News, Bethlehem, the West Bank.

A noteworthy development in Middle Eastern diplomacy emerged as high-ranking Syrian officials expressed a desire for peaceful relations with Israel. This initiative signifies a potential shift in regional dynamics and underscores Syria's interest in de-escalating longstanding tensions.
Interview with Governor Meher Marwan of Damascus:
Governor Marwan emphasized that while Israel might naturally feel apprehensive about the new Syrian government's rise to power, Syria harbors no intentions to interfere with Israel's security. This stance aligns with previous statements from HTS leader Ahmad Al Sharra, who affirmed the government's disinterest in conflict with Israel.
Additionally, Governor Marwan appealed to the United States to act as a mediator, urging American officials to communicate Syria's peaceful intentions to Israel. A U.S. official confirmed that this message has been conveyed to Israeli counterparts, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic engagement.

Bethlehem, a city traditionally bustling with thousands of tourists during Christmas, experienced an unusually subdued atmosphere this year. The somber mood is attributed to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has cast a pall over the festive celebrations.
Insights from Emily Fang's Report:
The Church of the Nativity saw regular activities with worshippers participating in prayers and songs within its historic sections. However, the main church in Manger Square, known as the traditional birthplace of Jesus, remained notably empty. This stark contrast underscores the community's grief and the impact of over 45,000 Palestinian casualties in Gaza, leading to muted celebrations and a collective mourning.
