I'm Jeanine Herbst. Severe winter weather is disrupting flights across the U.S. during this peak holiday travel season. NPR's Joel Rose reports. Airlines canceled or delayed thousands of flights nationwide today.
Joel Rose (0:31)
The National Weather Service issued winter storm advisories warning of hazardous travel conditions from Michigan through the Mid Atlantic and southern New England. New York City is bracing for heavy snow that's forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights at airports in New York and New Jersey, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. With JetBlue, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines canceling the most flights on the west coast, high winds are causing lengthy delays for flights landing at San Francisco International Airport when winter storms are disrupting one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season, with more than 47,000 flights planned, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. President Trump says last night's strikes targeting ISIS in northwest Nigeria were a powerful and deadly response to militants there attacking and killing Christians. An insurgency has gone on in the country for more than 10 years, killing killing thousands of both Christians and Muslims. Imperial's Emmanuel Okonwoto has more.

The strikes occurred overnight on Friday morning local time in northwest Nigeria. ISIS militants were targeted in the attacks described as deadly by President Trump, but officials have given few details. Trump said more strikes would follow. Nigeria's government has come out in support of the operation. Foreign Minister Yusuf Tugar said he spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio shortly before the strikes, but has faced criticism and questions on whether Nigeria gave consent or was simply consulted. Nigeria has faced pressure from US Officials who claim Christians are facing a genocide from armed groups who security experts say target both Christians and Muslims.
