In a post announcing the strikes, Trump wrote, quote, merry Christmas to all, including the dead terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues. In his own post, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation and said there would be more to come. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says after an hour long phone call Thursday with the US Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the three found new ideas in terms of formats, meetings and timing on how to bring a real peace deal closer. Meanwhile, at the Vatican, Pope Leo said Ukraine and Russia need to find find the courage to end the war. After hearing the pope's message, Maria Duda from Ukraine said she was encouraged.

It's expected to be a fast moving storm. Snow is forecast to spread across the region late Friday afternoon. It should intensify overnight before heading out to sea. By midday Saturday, up to 8 inches of snow could blanket the region stretching from northeastern Pennsylvania across northern New Jersey, New York, Long island and into eastern Connecticut. It would be the second significant snow to hit the region in the past two weeks. As much as 6 inches of snow coated a large swath of New Jersey earlier this month. More storms are expected in the already waterlogged state of California Friday following the record breaking rainfall on Christmas Eve. Noaa, the national oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has issued a rare high risk warning for parts of Southern California as a result of the FL flood and the landslide risk for parts of the region. Officials have also issued evacuation warnings in some parts of the mountain regions and for possible high surf conditions along the Pacific coast. This is npr. North Korea is making progress towards having a nuclear powered submarine. The country showed a picture of a completed haul for the first time and said the vessel is now capable of launching nuclear missiles. NPR's Se Woon Gong reports.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un has visited a shipyard at an undisclosed location to inspect the submarine under construction, the country's state media reported. The Korean Central News Agency revealed also for the first time that the submarine is 8,700 ton class. North Korea first publicized its plan for building nuclear subs in 2021 as part of a five year military plan. South Korea won President Trump's approval for acquiring nuclear subs in October. It plans to hold working level talks with the US Starting early next year. Kim Jong Un criticized Seoul's move as an offensive act that must be countered. Se Euong, NPR News, Seoul.

In Tokyo, Japan's cabinet has approved a record defense budget that exceeds 99 trillion yen, or equivalent to about $58 billion U.S. this is more than a 9% year over year increase in military spending and it comes as Japan's leadership says it is facing increased threat from nearby China and China could be involved militarily if China were to take action against Taiwan. Japan has been under US Pressure to increase military spending and the country has pledged to increase its weapons spending. From Washington, this is NPR News. I'm Dan Ronan.
