When you have a wreckage that has indications that it was near an explosion, and there are appearances of puncture wounds in the fuselage and tail, similar to what we saw with Malaysia Flight 17 that was shot down by the Russians. Those things make the investigators begin to look in greater depth for the possibility that this was actually shot down.

You're listening to npr. South Korea's parliament has impeached the country's acting president, who had been on the job for less than two weeks. Opposition lawmakers say he was trying to shield President Yoon Song Yeol, who was also impeached this month. That was after Yoon's botched attempt to declare martial law. South Korea's finance minister, Choi Sang Mok, has now become the country's newest acting prime minister. In the US Health officials are warning pets could be at risk of contracting bird flu if they consume raw milk or raw pet food. NPR's Will Stone tells us there have been reports of some cats falling ill and dying.
Will Stone
Raw pet food made with turkey or poultry can harbor the virus. A brand based in Portland, Oregon, called Northwest Naturals recently issued a recall after a house cat died from bird flu. Health officials confirmed the cat had contracted the virus from the brand's frozen turkey offering. In Los Angeles, several cats have also caught bird flu and died after consuming raw milk. Kristen Coleman at the University of Maryland has reviewed the evidence on bird flu in felines. She says sometimes cats will have respiratory symptoms, but recently it's presented differently.

It seems more neurological. It often mimics rabies.

NASA says its Parker Solar Probe appears to be safe. The probe has transmitted a beacon tone back to Earth. On Tuesday, it skimmed less than 4 million miles away from the surface of the sun without burning up. That's the closest a human made object has ever come to the sun. The probe is studying the sun's atmosphere. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News.

[00:19] Korva Coleman opens the episode with a report on a significant development in Syrian politics. The new Syrian government, under President Ahmad Shara, has appointed NS Hasan Khattab as the Minister of General Intelligence. This appointment is controversial as Khattab is sanctioned by the United Nations for his involvement with terror organizations, including Al Qaeda.
[00:31] Hadil Al Shilchi provides further details, stating, "NS Hasan Khattab was involved in the formation of Al Nusra Front, according to the United Nations, and today he's the new Syrian minister of general intelligence appointed by President Ahmad Shara." Khattab was sanctioned in 2014 for facilitating financing and support for the militant Nusra Front. Despite breaking ties with Al Qaeda years ago, his new role raises concerns due to his past affiliations.
The Nagging issue persists as HTS (Hayed Tahir Hashem), a group with historical ties to Al Qaeda now designated by the United States as a terrorist organization, continues to influence Syrian politics. Notably, President Shara remains a designated terrorist, although the U.S. has recently lifted a $10 million bounty on his head.
In aviation news, Korva Coleman reports that Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to several Russian cities following a fatal crash on Christmas Day that resulted in dozens of passenger fatalities.

Adding expertise to the situation, retired airline pilot John Cox, who leads an aviation consulting firm, comments on the investigation:
[01:39] John Cox: "When you have a wreckage that has indications that it was near an explosion, and there are appearances of puncture wounds in the fuselage and tail, similar to what we saw with Malaysia Flight 17 that was shot down by the Russians. Those things make the investigators begin to look in greater depth for the possibility that this was actually shot down."
Cox emphasizes that the debris analysis will be crucial in determining the cause of the crash, hinting at the possibility of a deliberate attack.

Dime Savings Bank of New York: Parsons' first major turnaround role involved helping the bank recover from a savings and loans crisis in the late 1980s.

To mitigate risks, Coleman advises pet owners to keep their animals away from wild birds and to avoid feeding them raw animal products.
In a remarkable achievement for space exploration, Korva Coleman shares that NASA's Parker Solar Probe has successfully transmitted a beacon tone back to Earth, confirming its safety after a daring maneuver. On Tuesday, the probe made a close approach, skimming less than 4 million miles from the sun's surface—the closest any human-made object has ever come to the sun.
