More@kansashealthsystem.com Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. The White House says it's monitoring the investigation into the Azerbaijani passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday. NPR's Windsor Johnston says preliminary reports show the jet went down because because of, quote, physical and technical external interference.
Windsor Johnston
The passenger jet was traveling from the Azerbaijani capital to Chechnya, Russia, when it was diverted. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby says it's possible that Russian weapons hit the plane.
John Kirby
We have seen some early indications that would certainly point to the possibility that this jet was brought down by Russian air defense system. That said, we have offered our assistance to that investigation should they need it, should they want it.
Windsor Johnston
Images of the plane's tail show damage consistent with explosives. Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to airports inside of Russia. Moscow has denied any wrongdoing. Windsor Johnston, NPR News, Washington.

The Centers for Disease Control has found potentially concerning mutations in the bird flu. The mutations were found in a sample from a patient recently hospitalized in Louisiana. The discovery raises concern over potential human to human infection, but the CDC says the risk to the public remains low. Dr. Deborah Brix says the problem may be bigger than people think, though, because testing for the viruses has so far been limited.
Dr. Deborah Brix
They're monitoring more than 10,000 exposures, but they've only tested 530. What does that mean? That means we're not testing enough and we know from other viruses that a lot of the spread can be asymptomatic.

Brics is a former White House COVID 19 response coordinator during the first Trump administration. The National Weather Service has released a high surf advisory along the California coast from Sonoma county through Monterey, where waves are reaching 30ft high at this hour. Member station KQED's Maria Fernanda Bernal reports.
Braden Murdoch
Meteorologists are warning people to stay away from the beach on the California coast while the high surf advisory is in effect. People should not swim or surf because it's dangerous, says meteorologist Braden Murdoch for the National Weather Service.
Meteorologist
We can't recommend much in the way of fishing or even taking the pets along the beach. If they're still what they think is far away from the water, it could still sneak up on you.
Braden Murdoch
It's also discouraged to be on a recreational boat or a small craft at this time. Water temperatures are below 40 and can cause cold water shock. Murdoch says water rescues would also put emergency responders at risk because fog and rain makes visibility difficult. The high surf advisory expires Sunday at 4pm For NPR News, I'm Maria Fernanda Bernal in San Francisco.

On Wall street, stocks closed mixed on Friday. You're listening to NPR News. Travelers to and from the UK Faced major disruptions on Friday as foggy weather affected many airports. The country's three major airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick in London, experienced delays. The travel restrictions are having an effect on what is one of the biggest travel seasons of the year. New York State Attorney General Letitia James released what she called shocking and disturbing body camera videos on Friday that show the beating of a handcuffed man in state prison who later died. From member station wnyc, Charles Lane has more.

The videos capture the moment Robert Brooks was carried to a medical exam room at the Marcy Correctional Facility in northern New York. Multiple corrections imploded employees can be seen punching and kicking Brooks in the head, groin and other body parts. He appeared delirious during the beating. Of the 14 employees present during the incident, only four had body cameras that were turned on, but they weren't activated and only recorded in standby mode without audio. Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the termination of the 14 employees involved in the incident or who failed to intervene. Criminal charges are also possible pending the outcome of James investigation. For NPR News, I'm Charles Lane in New York.

Released on December 28, 2024
Azerbaijani Passenger Plane Crash Under Investigation
In a tragic incident on Wednesday, an Azerbaijani passenger jet crashed in Kazakhstan while en route to Chechnya, Russia. Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash may have been caused by "physical and technical external interference" (00:13).
Possible Russian Involvement John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated, “[00:49] We have seen some early indications that would certainly point to the possibility that this jet was brought down by Russian air defense system. That said, we have offered our assistance to that investigation should they need it, should they want it.”
Damaged sections of the plane’s tail are consistent with explosive impacts, raising further suspicions. In response to the incident, Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended all flights to Russian airports. Moscow has categorically denied any involvement in the crash. Windsor Johnston of NPR News reported, “[01:04] Images of the plane's tail show damage consistent with explosives. Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to airports inside of Russia. Moscow has denied any wrongdoing.”
CDC Reports Concerning Mutations in Bird Flu Virus
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified potentially alarming mutations in the bird flu virus from a sample taken from a recently hospitalized patient in Louisiana. While the CDC maintains that the risk of human-to-human transmission remains low, the discovery has sparked concerns about the virus's potential evolution.
Dr. Deborah Brix, a leading expert at the CDC, highlighted the issue of limited testing: “[01:46] They're monitoring more than 10,000 exposures, but they've only tested 530. What does that mean? That means we're not testing enough and we know from other viruses that a lot of the spread can be asymptomatic.” Brix emphasized that the undertesting could mask the virus's true spread, indicating that the problem may be more extensive than currently understood.
High Surf Advisory Issued for California Coast
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory affecting the California coastline from Sonoma County through Monterey. At the time of reporting, waves were reaching heights of up to 30 feet, posing significant dangers to both individuals and emergency responders.
Safety Warnings and Precautions Meteorologist Braden Murdoch advised, “[02:17] People should not swim or surf because it's dangerous.” Additionally, he warned against other beach activities: “[02:32] We can't recommend much in the way of fishing or even taking the pets along the beach. If they're still what they think is far away from the water, it could still sneak up on you.”
Murdoch further cautioned against using recreational boats or small crafts due to the frigid water temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which can lead to cold water shock. He noted, “[02:42] It's also discouraged to be on a recreational boat or a small craft at this time. Water temperatures are below 40 and can cause cold water shock.”
The high surf advisory is set to expire on Sunday at 4 PM.
UK Airports Experience Major Disruptions Due to Fog
Travelers both to and from the United Kingdom faced significant disruptions on Friday as foggy conditions severely impacted air traffic. Major airports, including London’s Heathrow and Gatwick, experienced numerous delays, complicating what is typically one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
The pervasive fog has led to extensive flight cancellations and rescheduling, causing widespread inconvenience for passengers and airlines alike. The continuing weather challenges are expected to persist into the holiday season, potentially exacerbating travel chaos.
New York Attorney General Releases Shocking Prison Beating Videos
New York State Attorney General Letitia James unveiled disturbing body camera footage on Friday that captures the brutal beating of Robert Brooks, a handcuffed man in state prison who later succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred at the Marcy Correctional Facility in northern New York.

Multiple corrections imploded employees can be seen punching and kicking Brooks in the head, groin and other body parts. He appeared delirious during the beating.”
Out of the 14 corrections employees present during the assault, only four had body cameras, which were found to be on standby mode without audio being recorded. In response to the egregious behavior, Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the termination of all 14 employees involved or those who failed to intervene.
