Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ram. A South Korean passenger plane skidded off a Runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames this morning while attempting to land at an Airport about 180 miles south of Seoul. There were 181 people on board. Only two of them survived. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports from Seoul.
Anthony Kuhn
Jeju Air is considered South Korea's leading low cost carrier, and this is the first fatal accident they've suffered in nearly two decades of operation. The plane was a Boeing 737 800. Its landing gear and the plane have a good safety record. This particular Jeju airplane was 50 years old and had a clean record. So it's believed to be the worst accident for any South Korean airline since 1997.

NPR's Anthony Kuhn. Transport officials say it appears the airport control tower had warned of birds in its path and had given permission to the pilot to land in a different area. The pilot sent out a distress signal shortly before the crash. The president of Azerbaijan said today that Russia shot down the Azerbaijan airline that crash last week and has tried to hide that fact for days. Ilham Olaviev said that he is not he is not saying it was done intentionally, but he says it's clear the aircraft was hit by fire from the ground in Russia and rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare. The crash in Kazakhstan on Wednesday killed 38 of the 67 people on board. At least two people have died and six are injured after tornadoes touched down in Texas and Mississippi yesterday. NPR's Eva Pukach reports.
Marc Chouinard
National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chouinard says there were numerous reports of tornadoes Saturday as the storm system moved east from Texas to Alabama. And there's a possibility of more tornadoes today across the southeast U.S. there is.

An expectation that there could be, you know, some tornado threat across the Florida Panhandle into Georgia, maybe even into portions of South Carolina as we go through the morning and into the afternoon hours.

The 119th Congress opens Friday. One of the first tasks for members of the House is to pick a speaker it's not clear if Mike Johnson will be able to hold on to the gavel. NPR's Tamara Keith has more.

He initially negotiated a bipartisan deal to keep the government funded and a bunch of other things in there. Then Elon Musk and President Elect Trump blew it up. Trump demanded that Congress clear the decks for him by suspending the debt ceiling, but Johnson ultimately couldn't deliver what Trump wanted. Now there are enough Republicans saying they aren't sure whether they'll support Johnson for speaker, that he could be in real trouble.

Nearly 900 people fell ill and 48 died. Symptoms include fever, weakness, coughing and difficulty breathing. International health experts spent days getting to the far flung villages to collect samples. Now diagnostic tests have been run on 430 samples, and the disease isn't a new one, but acute respiratory infections like influenza and Covid, complicated by malaria and a severely malnourished population. Health authorities say there are ongoing efforts to support the health needs of people in the remote area. Gabriela Emanuel, NPR News.

The former Soviet republic of Georgia swore in a new president today. Mikhail Kaveleshvili's Georgian Dream Party has said it wants to reset ties with Russia. The opposition had boycotted the election and claims it was rigged by Russia. German politicians are accusing billionaire Elon Musk of election interference. The coalition government collapsed last month and new elections are scheduled for Feb. 23. Musk, an adviser to Donald Trump, published an opinion piece in a German newspaper yesterday backing the right wing Alternative for Germany party, saying only it can save Germany. The leader of the opposition Christian Democrats, called the commentary intrusive and pretentious. I'm Nora Ramm, NPR News, in Washington.

NPR News Now delivers a comprehensive overview of critical global and national events in this episode. The following sections encapsulate the key topics discussed, enriched with notable quotes and insights from experts and reporters.
Overview: A devastating aviation accident occurred approximately 180 miles south of Seoul when a South Korean passenger plane skidded off the runway, collided with a concrete fence, and erupted in flames during its landing attempt. Of the 181 individuals onboard, only two survived.
Details & Insights:
Aircraft and Airline Safety: The ill-fated flight was operated by Jeju Air, South Korea's leading low-cost carrier, on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Notably, this airline had maintained a strong safety record over nearly two decades, making this incident particularly shocking. Anthony Kuhn reports, “This is believed to be the worst accident for any South Korean airline since 1997” (00:42).
Possible Causes: Initial investigations suggest that bird strikes may have played a role. Transport officials indicated that the control tower had warned of birds along the flight path and authorized an alternate landing zone. Shortly before the crash, the pilot issued a distress signal (01:06).
Additional Context: The episode also touches on geopolitical tensions, citing claims from Azerbaijan's President Ilham Olaviev accusing Russia of downing an Azerbaijani aircraft the previous week, highlighting the complex interplay between aviation safety and international relations.

Overview: As the 119th Congress convenes, the selection of the House Speaker has become a focal point of contention. Current Speaker Mike Johnson faces uncertainty regarding his retention amid political pressures.
Details & Insights:
Political Dynamics: Mike Johnson initially brokered a bipartisan agreement to fund the government, among other initiatives. However, disruptions arose when significant political figures, including Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump, opposed the agreement. Trump’s insistence on suspending the debt ceiling as a condition for clearing the political landscape exacerbated the situation (02:36).
Speaker's Dilemma: With growing skepticism among Republicans about Johnson’s ability to secure their support, his position as Speaker is increasingly precarious. Tamara Keith highlights the internal party conflicts that jeopardize Johnson’s leadership (02:47).

Overview: The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially diagnosed a mysterious disease that emerged in October within a remote region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak has affected nearly 900 individuals, resulting in 48 deaths.
Details & Insights:
Symptoms and Spread: Affected individuals exhibit symptoms such as fever, weakness, coughing, and difficulty breathing. The disease has strained local healthcare systems, especially given the challenges posed by malaria prevalence and malnutrition in the area (03:32).
Diagnostic Efforts: Health experts conducted extensive fieldwork to collect samples from isolated villages. Diagnostic tests on 430 samples revealed that the illness is not a novel pathogen but rather acute respiratory infections exacerbated by existing health vulnerabilities (03:32).
Response Measures: Ongoing efforts focus on addressing the immediate health needs of the population and preventing further spread of the disease (03:32).
Notable Quote:
“The disease isn’t a new one, but acute respiratory infections like influenza and Covid, complicated by malaria and a severely malnourished population.” — Gabriela Emanuel (03:32)
Overview: Georgia has inaugurated a new president, Mikhail Kaveleshvili, from the Georgian Dream Party, amidst tensions regarding Russia’s influence. Concurrently, German politicians accuse Elon Musk of meddling in German elections.
Details & Insights:
Georgia's Political Shift: The new president's party aims to "reset ties with Russia," a move met with skepticism by the opposition, which boycotted the elections and alleges Russian interference. The coalition government's collapse last month has led to scheduled new elections on February 23 (04:10).
Elon Musk's Involvement in Germany: German authorities are scrutinizing billionaire Elon Musk, an advisor to Donald Trump, for his recent opinion piece supporting the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Musk's commentary has been criticized by opposition leaders as “intrusive and pretentious,” raising concerns over external influences in national elections (04:10).
