Live from NPR News. I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida Sunday to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. After their meeting, Zelenskyy told reporters there's been a lot of movement toward a deal.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
We discussed all the aspects of the peace framework, which includes and we have a great achievements, 20 point peace plan 90% agreed and US Ukraine security guarantees 100% agreed, US Europe, Ukraine security guarantees almost agreed, military dimension 100% agreed, prosperity plan being finalized. And we also discussed the sequencing of the following actions. And we agree that security guarantees are the key milestone in achieving lasting peace. And our teams will continue working on all aspects.

The two also said they updated European leaders about the talks. China has announced it will conduct a military drill on Tuesday encircling Taiwan. The drill's come as Taiwan is enmeshed in a political fight in part over the cost of its defense against China. NPR's Emily Fang reports.

China is warning ships and planes to stay out of five large areas around the Asian island of Taiwan on Tuesday. That's where China's navy, army, air force and rocket force will be practicing joint assaults, sea to air combat and simulating blockades on Taiwan's ports. China's military said the drills were a warning to any separatists in Taiwan, a democratic society China hopes one day to control. China's last such military exercise was this past April. It has stepped up aggressive drills that entirely encircle Taiwan since 2022. An annual Pentagon report on China's military capabilities noted that Beijing has developed higher flexibility and coordination among its milit branches and recent drills designed to simulate an attack or a blockade on Taiwan. On Wall street, stocks are headed into the final trading week of the year after making sizable gains. And as NPR's Rafael Naam reports, 2025 has been a busy year for Wall Street.

It was a year defined to a large extent by tariffs. Markets tumbled earlier this year amid fears about the potential impact of tariffs, but stock market since have recovered. All three major indexes are heading to the end of the year with double digit gains. With the Nasdaq up 22% so far in 2025, the economy appears to have been able to withstand the effects of these import taxes. And now that the Federal Reserve is cutting interest rates, investors are ending the year with a bit of hope about next year. In fact, this week, the Fed is set to release the minutes from the latest policy meeting. Rafael Nelm, NPR News.

In Asia, stocks surged on Monday, particularly in South Korea. That's where the benchmark Kospi hit its highest point since November 4. Indonesian stocks, meanwhile, were up 0.8 and Philippine shares rose 0.4%. You're listening to NPR News. Families of the victims from the Sydney, Australia, massacre earlier this month are now calling for more federal action into a rise of anti Semitism in the country. In an open letter, they also called for for a broader investigation of the security failures behind the shooting. Fifteen people were killed when two gunmen opened fire on Bondi beach and other 40 people were wounded. As the shortage of primary care doctors gets worse, a handful of major health networks are creating virtual primary care practices assisted by artificial intelligence. From member station WBUR in Boston, Martha Beebinger reports.

At Mass. General Brigham, the largest hospital network in Massachusetts, patients who need primary care can see a doctor remotely 24 7. An AI agent handles the intake and sends the doctor a proposed treatment plan. Dr. Helen Ireland, who manages the program, says it bridges the gap for patients seeking an in person primary care provider.

We also realize that a certain subset of those patients may say, hey, I actually like this virtual primary care thing. In those cases, we'll offer the patient the opportunity to stay partnered with that PCP for the long term.
Martha Beebinger
Some doctors say this cheaper version program will erode primary care as we know it and should not be used by patients with multiple chronic or complex medical problems. For NPR News, I'm Martha Beebinger in Boston.

The government announced early this morning it will be offering $2 billion to the United nations for humanitarian assistance. That money is much less than the US has offered in the past and is in line with Trump administration efforts to slash foreign aid spending across the board. I'm Dale Willman, and you're listening to NPR News.
