Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. President Trump is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his resort in Florida today. The two leaders are expected to discuss the next steps toward end the war in Gaza. The meeting comes a day after Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks at Mar a Lago aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. NPR's Danielle Kurzleben reports.
Danielle Kurtzleben
Zelensky and Trump said they agreed on several issues, but acknowledged that they're still discussing sticking points like withdrawing troops from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and also the fate of a Russian occupied nuclear plant in southeastern Ukraine. When asked about how long it might take to come to a full agreement, Trump was non committal.

So if it went really well, you know, maybe a few weeks, and if it went poorly longer, and if it went really poorly, it's not going to happen. That would be a shame.
Danielle Kurtzleben
Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the meeting and told reporters he would also talk to him after the meeting. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a review of how Commonwealth agencies responded to this month's mass shooting at Bondi beach in Sydney. Albanese Bennisi says the country can't afford to wait years for change and expects the review to be finalized by April.
Donald Trump
This ISIS inspired atrocity in Bondi is a stark reminder of the rapidly changing security environment that we face and the need to make sure our agencies have what they need.

The mass shooting left 15 people dead. A bomb cyclone over the Midwest and Great Lakes is creating a mix of severe weather, including a winter storm during the Busy holiday travel. NPR's Kristen Wright reports. This type of system builds fast and usually means big amounts of snow and ice are left behind.
Bob Oravec
The bomb cyclone is bringing a lot of snow to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Places like Marquette in the Upper Peninsula could get a foot or more and blizzard whiteout conditions. National Weather Service lead forecaster Bob Oravec says the bomb cyclone is impacting cities and towns in the Great Lakes with snow and more snow at this time of year.

The lakes are also not frozen yet, so you can actually have stronger lake effect snows. And the lakes don't always freeze.

Freezing rain is icing up roads in northern New England and New York State and down to New York City and surrounding areas still digging out from a weekend snowstorm. And there's arctic air in North Platte, Nebraska, And Fargo, North Dakota. Wind chills are plunging way below zero. Kristen Wright, NPR News.

The CDC says nearly 5 million people have come down with the flu so far this season. New York is seeing its worst outbreak on record, with more than 71,000 cases reported in just one week. Nationwide, more than a dozen states are reporting high or very high flu activity. This is NPR News in Washington. In his first year back in the White House, President Trump has been shaking up Washington. But as NPR's Tamara Keith reports, it's not just policy, it's also aesthetics.

Trump has been on a remodeling spree, from tearing down the East Wing of the White House to make room for his now $400 million ballroom and gilding the Oval Office to paving the Rose Garden to resemble the patio at his Mar a Lago club in Florida. During a recent speech, Trump mused that he actually has two jobs.
Donald Trump
I said somebody to somebody the other day, am I a better politician or construction real estate person? And they didn't know how to answer that question. I'm not sure how to answer it either, if you want to know the truth.
Tamara Keith
Trump admitted paying attention to the fine details of so many renovation projects does take time, but said it is relaxing. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

The U.S. is pledging $2 billion in humanitarian aid to the United nations even as the Trump administration slashes foreign assistance and urges UN Agencies to adapt to new financial constraints. Officials say the amount is far less than past contributions but still reflects what the White House calls a generous sum that maintains the U.S. role as the world's largest humanitarian donor. Stocks across Asia close mixed today. Markets in Japan and Hong Kong posted losses, while shares traded higher in China. On Wall Street, Dow futures are trading higher at this hour. I'm Windsor Johnston, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
