MAINE Democrats voted 566 to 5, approving Troy Jackson, a fifth generation logger and former legislative leader, to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins. Kevin Miller with Maine Public Radio reports on one of the nation's closest watched congressional races.

Jackson received all but five of the 571 votes cast by Democratic delegates during a special convention. He replaces Graham Platner, an oysterman and Marine Corps veteran who withdrew earlier this month. Like Platner, Jackson pledged to work toward universal health care to protect abortion rights and to stand up to the Trump administration.

The UN's secretary general, Antonio Guterres, landed in Damascus and was welcomed by Syria's foreign minister. Guterres predecessor last visited Syria in 2009. About two years later, a civil war began and consumed Syria for the better part of the next 14 years. Guterres visit and other visits by heads of state have come as the new government in Syria normalizes ties with the outside world. But Guterres has also expressed concern about two serious deadly bouts of sectarian violence in Syria that left thousands of civilians dead, mostly from Syria's minority groups. And violent attacks by militant groups are down, but they continue. During a visit by the French president to Syria earlier this month, two bombs Syria said were set by ISIS cells went off. This is npr. A firefighter who has been hospitalized with burn injuries since last month has died. Colorado's wildfire season has now killed five crew members. Colorado Public Radio's Stina Seeg reports that firefighters across the state continue to battle several large wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced evacuations of thousands of people.

43 year old Nathan Matthews of Lincoln, Nebraska, was in a group of firefighters caught by a large wildfire in late June. Though the crew opened their individual fire shelters, three died in that spot in rough terrain near the Utah border. Matthews was one of two firefighters badly injured. Two weeks later, a pilot helping fight a different large wildfire died in a helicopter crash. Though Colorado's largest fires have significantly calmed, new blazes have continually sparked across the parched landscape. Monsoon weather is helping crews, but most of the state remains in a serious drought. For NPR News, I'm Stina Sug in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In southern China, hundreds of thousands of people living near the coast of Guangdong are evacuating ahead of Typhoon Knoll. China's National Meteorological center says Null is expected to make landfall early Sunday around the cities of Shenzhen and Haifang with possible maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.
