The man has a lot to say and he lends us an insight into how he’s progressed from an open mic’er to headlining potential. How he writes and what he hopes for his growth in comedy are on the table. Also Jacob throws down some serious movie knowledge. He’s got the goods when it comes to Pauly Shore flicks and Mrs. Doubtfire. All useful talents but can he handle the wrath of the Movie Grudge match? Will anyone de-throne the long standing leader Jason Harvey? I can tell you this. You need to listen to the man’s ability to nail a classic movie line. Ok, it’s alright people. Michelle Bodkin is here to nurse us back to good health about the Utes and how the air may have been let out of our dream season but there’s still hope. Hope for a good bowl game and hope to close out the season strong. Maybe they lost a few games but you have to play the whistle and there’s one game left. What’s the prediction for the Colorado match up, will the leaders find the magic again, and where are the Ute’s going for their Bowl game? Here is the Movie grudge match update. In an effort to make it tougher I dug deep in the movie cave to find some fresh titles for the game. The theme is comedians in movies. Jason Harvey is the current champion so listen to see if Ol’ buddy ‘Phone Booth,’ can make a run at it. Also listen to my report of my recent attempt at bowling on the University campus. We’re coming off our biggest win of the season for the University of Utah football team over the mighty UCS Trojans. Michelle Bodkin gives us the eye witness view of what she saw from the field. See who she thinks the MVP of the game was. There’s no time to rest for the Utes as they take on Arizona State this weekend. Will it be another grinder? Oct 20, 2014Tap to summarizeHere’s what I like about the show’s we’ve done. We’ve gone deep: ‘Deep into the interview.’ I’m always interested on what makes a successful person’s motor run. What were the struggles, what their achievements are and what their future goals are? I think in speaking with enough people with this mindset I’ve come to the thought that these people are never happy. By that I mean a motivated person never rests, is never content with the current, and is always looking further down the road. That’s the feeling I get with Dave Harward. He’s a single focused individual who sees the end result not as a finish line but perhaps as a step to another goal. While I see many similarities between myself and him I don’t think anyone ever accused me of over planning. Is that good? Is that bad? I don’t know. I do know I seem to create best on the fly, when my feet are to the fire. Dave is a type A personality. He’s got a goal and he’s laid down the track to get there. Done deal! I’m more of the kind of guy who used the excuse in school “I’m a bad test taker” which is one of the most unusual things to say because no one ever said “I’m great at tests but not good at studying” No one was really on board with my idea of the Utah Utes ending their season right now after their big win against ranked UCLA. That’s not surprising but what if they did? It would be widely covered by news outlets and not just sports. We won a big game, call it a season. I think other teams would adopt this too. One big win, hit the showers. Everyone knows you go out on a high note. Win and disappear, like Keyser Soza of the college football word. Oct 18, 2014Tap to summarizeMy first go around as the Ol’ Ute Radio co-host. It goes without saying that I really didn’t want to screw up. I’d been a guest on the show a handful of times but I still had a decent level of nerves. It’s one thing to rent the car; it’s another to sign the lease. As a comic for the last four years I’m more trusting of my instincts and am constantly looking for a jumping off point. That’s my mindset moving forward on this ride. Getting to talk to Steve Soelberg is always interesting. He’s a comedian that I’ve considered “the varsity” since I started. I’m glad to be considered one of his peers. When I started comedy Steve was one of the first people to come up to me and say some encouraging words. After a show as everyone was leaving he said to me, “I like your writing”. A small gesture and he might not have even meant it. He could have just been saying it get past me in the hallway. Whatever it was I took it as a bonus. I was glad I talked to Steve a little bit today and hope to go into a deeper conversation in the future. Here’s the thing about sports. I love them. I’m not one of those fans who blindly cheers at the games. I’m a detail guy. Michelle Bodkin I think is too. Numbers, nuts and bolts, the nitty gritty! That’s the stitching in it all. I think she’s looking for the patterns behind the final score. Needless to say I have more questions for her. The Utah Ute season is still new and best attribute a critic can have is objectivity.
