And we got Rod Babers filling in for Bobby Burton this morning. So thank you Rod and thank you all for tuning in. It is, it is. Yeah. And look, we're what, 2 hours and 45ish minutes away from land, from munching sales, announcing his commitment. Obviously we still believe that's going to be Indiana versus Texas. You kind of decide on, okay, people are going to pick Indiana. You kind of go, okay, it's Indiana. Unless he announces somewhere else. And I'm not sitting here saying for sure he's going to Indiana. I'm just saying that's where this recruitment's been. But I, I can tell you guys this. Bobby wrote something. Same things we've heard obviously from multiple sources is that sales in his, in his people, his circle was still talking to Texas as of yesterday evening. As of Thursday evening in Indiana, not so much the others. That's why we've said, you know, we think this is Texas, Indiana. That's where it's been headed for a while. Obviously it's a big announcement today in the state of Indiana. It's one of the bigger football announcements of a high school prospect in the state of Indiana a long time. So he's going to do that live on the Pat McAfee Show. And the one thing I can say going into this is word normally behind the scenes starts to leak out. As you guys know, who have kind of been around recruiting for a while, when he calls schools to say he's not going there, that had happened as of yesterday evening. He had not told Indiana or Texas no. So, you know, look, I, Rod, I'm, I'm always the belief and I know fans don't like this when I say this, but if I was a pro, high profile kid like this announcing, I would not tell anybody where I would not tell the schools no, that I'm not going to, I, I, I would text him after and say I just wanted to have my, my moment. But when you start, when you start telling people, anybody you're not coming, the word normally tends to leak out. So I, I, I tell guys all the time. If you want to have your shock the world moment in recruiting, you don't tell anybody. You're five star guy, you have all the leverage. You just go announce your decision and move on with it. Everybody's Big boys, they can handle it. Sales will announce here coming up in 2 hours and 38ish minutes and we expect it to be Indiana Texas. Nothing has changed. I would say this to people as Cy Young says, sales to Texas here first you always lean to in this situation you're going to lean to Indiana. Until he says otherwise, that's just where you're at right now. But the biggest news I can say for Texas is the communication has continued.

[Rod Babers]

Yeah. And you keep thinking about the sales pitch, right? Like what can Texas throw out there that you know is a better salesperson? What Indiana has right now because their premier program fitting national champion just had the Heisman trophy winner. He's from that state as well. To me it's got to be the consistency and stability at quarterback that Sarcast been able to create this form system that he has been able to create at quarterback. And yes, Indy, Kurt Signetti is a great coach. You can argue he's the best coach in football right now. So he's going to find a solution quarterback. But it seems that they find they're into a different solution pretty much every season or every so often with the quarterback, which hey, there's a lot of teams like that that are, they have that model. Ain't nothing wrong with that. But the Sark model is at least if you're munch on sales you can envision yourself in the future having chemistry with this guy, whether that's a, a Diabell or you know, whoever it is that's going to be there in the pipeline. KG Lacy I think those to me that's the sales pitch is that Sarkis created his own farm system at quarterback and with guys like Arch Manning willing to stay and develop and learn and Quinn was able to kind of stay around so you could develop and create that forum system. And now you hoping that's the case with some of these other young highly touted quarterbacks that you've now put into the the pipeline or your forum system so to speak. Like me, that's the sales pitch because I don't, I'm trying to think otherwise. Nil. I mean they got their own sugar daddies now too with Mark Co.

So I joke, Rod, I jokingly said like if not that Cuban had it has had a discussion with sales. But I would joke, hey if, if anybody's like that's like it. You went to Indiana, lives anywhere around the world said hey man, stay home and go to Indiana. I would say why don't you live in Bloomington? You can live anywhere in the World. Yeah, that's what I would say.

That's good.

[Jerry Hamilton]

If you want me to go there so bad, why don't you live there while you live in Dallas? Tough, tough, tough, tough thing to say. Sometimes I think that they. What's so interesting where NIL has made this. Made recruiting so interesting nowadays is, is this. Rod, you went through this. You idolized Dion Sanders. You love Florida State. Okay, we can, all three of us right here can sit here and say, there's no way that Monson Sales grew up dreaming of wearing an Indiana Hoosiers football uniform.

No way.

National championship or not. That's. That was not his envisioned dream in college football. I mean, he was nicknamed Bam. He's originally from Bama. He visited three SEC schools. He had a fourth southern school in Miami, which he canceled for Texas. So that's the hurdle. And I'm not saying Indiana can't clear the hurdle, but that's the hurdle they have to get over. And like with the Landon Williams callous, I'm a broken record on this SMU in Houston. If they really think they're in the ball game, they still have to get over that hurdle. I mean, these kids that are recruited at this level nationally, they didn't. Very rarely, unless there's a family connect, are they growing up envisioning themselves playing for those schools. And that's not the takeaway from Kirks and Nettie. He's done amazing things. And Munchen could easily commit to Indiana. I'm not saying he's not. But that's the hurdle these schools have to get over because that kid didn't grow up with. With some Indiana football players jersey on, running around in the front yard. That's not the way this deal works with these kids. You know that, Rod. I mean, you know Mac. Mac had to convince you to stay home.

He did.

That was a good point because I. Yeah. I wasn't.

When you came out of Florida State. It was Florida State. It was Miami. That's who you grew up.

Notre Dame.

Yeah.

Yep. And my. My best friend at the time, Jerome Sapp, who's a all American as a junior, he had that same thing. He was. He was always fixated on Notre Dame. Always had this infatuation. Yeah. With the. Yeah. And he ended up going to Notre Dame. But you're right. Mac did a great job. I'll say. I'll give Mac and RC Slocum some credit. Shout out to the Aggies because RC Slocum did a good job of. They both were. Man, stand the state. Why you leaving the state, you know? And I said, I always throw out there, rc at the best pitch, like, hey, you want your mom and dad to go to every game, right? And I was like, yeah. He's like, well, then you got to stay in the state. You got to stay close to home. You got to stay at the Big 12. And that was pretty much how I started, you know, crossing off the out of state schools, thinking about, oh, man, I want mom and dad to go to the game. Now, that's obviously not a concern for this young man. Mom and dad can go to every game. They got different resources. But to your point, Jerry, you gotta hit the. Whatever those little X factors are. Maybe that little cinnamon, little sentimental things for this young man, like for Mac. Mac knew for me, at least RC Slocum did a good job. Like, hey, you want your mom and dad to go to the game? Boom. That was big. So I went out to stay out of state. Mac knew that, hey, I would. I love Dre Block. He. Because at the time, I was a big Dre Black. Dre Block was like a huge, great player.

Oh, yeah.

[Rod Babers]

And he coached Dre Block. He kept. And Alexander. It could have been B.S. max. Like, you remind me of Dre Bly. And I was like, oh, well, that. Come on, now that you saw me. And I ended up playing with Dre Bly. Ironically, when I was a Detroit Lions, we'd share Mac Brown stores. But he. Yeah, so I am with you on that. I mean, I did not think Texas was not a it school when I was growing up. It was not a sexy school when I was growing up. As a teenager, Mac was in the process of reinventing Texas to make it the school with. Then Ricky went into Heisman recruiting, the number one class 99 with Sims and Reading, and then the pinnacle of it with dy. Right? It's the coolest. It's coolest brand in college sports all the way to Austin, Texas, baby. And so it is. You're right about that, Jerry. The recruitment for Sarek and who was ever recruiting them, they got to hit those little sentimental factors that may pull this young man. And maybe it's that, hey, I want to. Maybe he wants to be away from home. Maybe, like now. I don't. I want to. I want to. I want to start my own legacy away from home. I don't want to be here, you know, with, you know, the pressure of the family and everybody. I want to be. I want some distance. Some people like that. Some people are like, no, I need some distance. Between me and. And all the entire family and the state and all those expectations. So it'll be interesting to see how this works out.

And you know what's also interesting now? The dynamic in recruiting. And again, we're not saying Sales is going to Texas here. He's going to announce his decision in two and a half hours. Indiana's the favorite until he announces for somebody else, in my estimation and his recruitment. But the other interesting thing, Rod, is from an agent perspective in these recruitments now, where can a kid build a brand? So, like, that's the other thing. Like with. With Indiana, I think all this stuff factors in with him. And, you know, look, Indiana, when people talk about Indiana Hoosiers, they talk about Signetti more than the Heisman Trophy winner.

They do.

[Jerry Hamilton]

They talk about the head coach more than the players. So that's an. That's because what Signetti did was so amazing. One of the most amazing things we've seen in college sports is. But he is the guy, you know, he's the guy everybody's fixated on more than the players there. And that's. That's a really different dynamic because of how quickly he came in and turned that flipped that thing and had the success and won the national championship. So it's. It's always interesting, too, from the agent's perspective. Look, the agent's local in Indianapolis, so everybody say, oh, he wants him to stay close potentially. But then there's also the thing of, okay, where can this kid be marketed the best? Yeah, he can be marketed inside the state of Indiana and in the Big Ten. Probably the best at Indiana. Where can it be marketed around the country that. See, there's so many different things in recruiting now when you add into agent and the marketing of the player and building that player's brand. So there's. I, you know, look, we'll see where he goes. But there's so many factors now. That's why I think Sales is. Is a fascinating recruitment. Because he's in a state. He's the best prospect in that state in a while, and he just so happens to be a senior the year after Indiana does one of the most unthinkable things you. You've seen in college sports. Win a national championship in football. You know, hey, if you're a Texas basketball fan, that's what should give you hope right there. So it like doing that with Sales then coming in the next class, probably. He's also facing not. It's not Eastern Royal State of Louisiana pressure Leonard Fernet faced in Louisiana but there is a different pressure now because no kid was expected to stay in state unless they went to Notre Dame. In Indiana, he's the first big prospector that's changed. There's like people want him to stay and say hell if you. Five years ago, if you say I'm considering Indiana pre, they're like, what else you got out of state, man, you're staying here. Like it that. So the thing flipped in two years and he's the first big recruit to go through this right on coming on the heels of Indiana winning a title. So that's why I think it's such a fascinating recruitment. But the other part of the recruitment that's really interesting to me and it doesn't surprise me that Indiana and Texas are the favorites. He reached out to Texas. He was a top 10 ranked player and a 5 star player. He reached out to Texas through his people to say he'd have interest.

Wow.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Top 10 players don't regularly. They don't regularly do that. Yeah, there was something in about Texas that caught his attention. Probably at Cam Coleman going there. Probably guys, he watched Texas on tv. They've been in the playoffs the last two years. Guys were getting drafted in the first round. Right. So then when Texas offered him, I was like, when Chris Jackson offered him after word got the Texas that oh, he has interest, I was like, so Texas did their due diligence and thinks this is, this could be a real recruitment. So it's gonna, it's gonna be interesting where it goes. I think everybody's picking Indiana and I don't blame everybody for picking Indiana. And now we talked about this for five more minutes. Five minutes closer to when he announces. And by the way, Landon Williams Callous August 1st, we still like Texas there. I will, I plan to attend that announcement, wherever that is in Houston because it's going to be a big one. It's going to be fun. He's. He's a hometown hero. There aren't many of those. Those, those get you really excited to go to a ceremony where somebody's a hometown hero because that just doesn't come along very often. And Landon Williams callous is truly one of those guys in his family with Michael Lewis, Jacquiz and James Rogers. They are hometown heroes in Richmond Rosenberg. So I can't wait to go to that one, wherever it is. August 1st.

you know, on Noah Roberts, what I would say to that is who, who knows what Noah Roberts would do? You got to get to that point point first. But the one thing we talked about on coffee and football yesterday, Blake, with Bobby, was we all just kind of talked about what's going to happen if Landon Williams callous does commit to Texas August 1st. His schools are going to start tapping back in with Noah Roberts to see if he has any interest. That's what's going to happen. Because, you know, who doesn't have a back in their class that was recruiting him, you know, or doesn't Oregon just tap back in, say, hey, we're still here, you know, get the conversation flowing again? Because if that does transpire, I think the, the what will, what you can guarantee will happen is schools will start the, the hit Noah Roberts with the text in the dm say, hey, we're still right here. And could be some new schools, too. That running back recruiting didn't go their way in the summer. So. And well, on the last part, we'll, we'll see. I mean, look, that's what Indiana fans sure think. Indiana fans are confident. They should be confident. They didn't lose a game last year they hadn't lost in a while.

Coach, I want, we are Next Monday, the 20th is SEC Media Days. It's here, obviously, Sark. We wait all week for Sark. He's Thursday last coach to speak. What are kind of, I mean, I know, look, these coaches say different things. What is something you're. You kind of want to hear or you expect to hear from. From Sark on the media day?

[Blake Monroe]

Well.

Or what would you ask him? What would you ask him?

I don't know. What I would ask him is the same thing that he would answer in a media situation, because you have to understand, he's obviously all these guys going to have their guards up. They're not going to. There's a lot of questions I would like to ask him off the record, you know, just Bob and Steve, you know, shooting the bull kind of thing.

but, you know, there's, there's, there's like, you know, I want to get down into the brass tax of the offensive line, of the defensive line and, you know, start there. I want to talk about the safeties. You know, I want to talk about how that's going to shake up. I want to talk about how, how this new defense is.

Is it been somewhat seamless?

[Coach Bob Shipley]

Has it been a smooth transition?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Terminology?

[Coach Bob Shipley]

Or is it, is it off the charts? Is it somewhat similar, you know, was, you know, maybe Blake Gideon able to, you know, ease that transition, having been in both systems as a coach? And so anyway, there's, but I also want to ask his, his take on. And again, I don't know that we get an honest answer, but we, we, we were talking the other day about, you know, you know, ranking who were some underrated players and all that. And the name Emmett Mosley keeps coming up, you know.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Oh, yeah.

[Coach Bob Shipley]

I want to know who the real Emmett Mosley, a healthy Emmett Mosley is and what you see his production being this year and his role with your two guys that you've got that everybody in the country knows about, who's going to be that other one and, and what role do you see him playing and how will you utilize him when people start taking, you know, your big guys? And he wouldn't answer that question, I'm sure in public. But. But I'm interested to know because you have to, you have to as a coach, you have to use that strategy and say, okay, they're taking Wingo away, they're taking Coleman away, giving them more attention than most people do. Then what's my counter to that going to be? And who is it going to be with?

[Rod Babers]

No, I totally agree, Coach. Between Emmett Mosley and your tight end position, defensive coordinators won't have enough resources to be able to allocate to stop, you know, Wingo and Cam Coleman, Relik Brown in the backfield with some others. You'll probably gotta keep somebody around on some pass plays now to spy Arch because of his mobility and his scrambling ability. So it's just a lot of women's to worry about. And I'm with you. I could easily see the coordinates going, hey, man, we just gotta let em and Mosley, we got to leave him to our, you know, our third best DB and hope our DB can hold up against Emmy Mosley. So I agree. I think even Mosley actually could play a huge role this year. And I think he's. I believe the conversation we had was that he might be the most disrespected player on the team because we go from talking about Coleman and Wingo and we kind of just skip to go straight to talk about the young bishop and how's he gonna fit in and what he could do and some of the other weapons. And I believe he might be the least talked about player on offense this offseason. I don't think we've talked. I, I remember a lot of conversations that we've had, not many about Emmett Mosley and his impact on the team.

[Jerry Hamilton]

So.

[Rod Babers]

I like that. Coach, I'm with you.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I think part of that is the last time people saw him, he was limping off the field and had surgery too. Right. So I, I think the Mosley is in that. I'm not comparing him as a player. He's in that Jordan Whittington mode of people just want to see him healthy for a season and to see what he can do because he didn't play all the games as freshman year at Stanford. Then obviously he missed the first four, came back, didn't get hurt in the bowl game. So he's, he's had that injury bug his first couple years of college football. And I think guys To Yalls Point. That's why Texas is so excited about him because they say if we get a healthy season out of this guy, how good is he really going to be? And I think inside the building they think a lot better than people probably think.

[Rod Babers]

I think he had zero drops too. I don't think he had a drop last year. If I'm not mistaken. I gotta look at pff. But I believe that's kind of one of the other impressive stats about even mostly that he didn't have a drop last year. Hey coach, speaking of this kind subject, let me ask you this because this is a question somebody threw at me and I don't know if you could ask Sarkis and he'd tell you the truth. He probably just kind of beat around the bush because it's a, an answer that could really be an indictment. I said if he gave the wrong answer. But aside from Arch, Colin Simmons and Trevor Goosby, your three top players, those will be three players that are SEC media days who own offense and defense. Who are the most irreplaceable players on the team?

[Jerry Hamilton]

That's a great question.

[Rod Babers]

Behind, take Arch out of it, take Goosebie, take Simmons, because those are elite players, they top 15 picks. Obviously nobody can replace them. Who's the most irreplaceable players outside of them on offensive defense?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Just.

[Coach Bob Shipley]

Well, as hard as it's been for our offense. This is going to sound strange coming from a guy who, who, who likes speed and I like action and I like going deep and I like ripping off big runs. But none of that could happen without I'm going to say Connor Robertson.

Coach. You know what's interesting? I was thinking along the same line because behind Connor Robertson is no experience at center, no playing experience at center. The other one I was going with was the other side over the balls, Ian Jaffaard.

I mean he is, he is going to take on a big role on this team in this scheme. And the other guy, I was thinking if it wasn't Connor Robertson was Massunas as a, as a plus plus blocking inline tight end. But I think that's great. I think the up the middle, I think coaches on it, I mean Connor Robertson, who has experience behind him.

[Rod Babers]

I agree because everybody else, you can kind of see a player like well there's a desk, there's a guy here, depth here, they may not be proven but you can see the upside and then potentially fitting into wherever that player left the void on the roster. But center is one of those. And I would say Jelani McDonald. Yeah.

[Coach Bob Shipley]

You.

You don't even know who your other safety is going to be. Not having Jelani McDonald. If Jelani McDonald ain't available to you, what does that safety situation look like? That's scary. Hey, because you just don't know. I mean, yeah, we love Jonah Williams, but he can't stay healthy. You just got guys coming off an injury. Derrick Williams is hoping to take that spot, but he's in that conversation, too. So somebody asked, asked that question to me and, and I was just stupefied me. For a while. I didn't know what to say, so I thought I'd throw it out there to coach. But I like coach's answer about.

I think those, I think those are

[Jerry Hamilton]

two positions that, that, that really can

[Coach Bob Shipley]

put you in a bind. Safety and offensive line. Defensive line wise, we've got some depth, you guys. Yeah, we've got some depth.

And on the defensive line, if you,

if you misread a hat or you make them stay, you just stick a foot in the ground and go. And nobody would. If you do that on offense or you do that on defensive safety, he's. You got big problems, you know, if you make the wrong read initially, you

know, defensive lines a little more forgiving.

And I like that depth. But I like the Jelani McDonald too. I think that's, I think that's going

to be

a huge question mark if something happens with him.

One more thing to Jerry's point about Andrew Fart. Last year, you didn't have anybody really that could play that. No Split that zero technique right over the ball. And now you have it. Essentially a guy that. His expertise is that. That's what he specializes in. And so that is going to change the complexion of your defensive front as well.

Yeah, I think that's a great point. I can't, I can't wait to see the bridge in action.

Yeah, that's going to be great. I, I can't wait to see how that works out. And as will Muschamp. That's got to be a great feeling to have a guy like that have Colin Simmons and have the other guys you have up front.

Yeah. Who's the on this, on this subject, Rod, Who's the most important guy that Texas is the most important guy Texas needs healthy that struggled with injuries. Is that, does that just become Jonah Williams? See if we're, if you're ever. Because look, the reality is for Jonah Williams, like if Emmett Mosley rolled his ankle week three again, okay, Texas is loaded at wide receiver, right? You got Jermaine Bishop waiting. You have Dale McCutcheon, you have Sterling Burkhalter. I mean you got guys at that position. The circle of trust is going to be small, but you got really talented guys. But from a standpoint of getting somebody healthy to see and they have a chance to make a real impact on this team, it kind of leads me to two young guys, Jonah Williams and Justice Terry. Oh, it's a good one because Planet Fitness coach. That's Justice Terry's nickname. Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness. You know, he said he set scheme fit with must champs defense too. I mean he is that 5 tech. He's got his weight over 290, can be an interior disruptor. But Jonah Williams is, it's, it's so important for Jonah and I think Texas fans one, I think Jonah could be a tremendous player if he's healthy. But this is his last year before he's going to have to make a decision on the sport. It's coming quick for him. So. And Rod, as much as you liked him out of high school and as much a question is that free spot kind of is, I, I think he's the one guy and I think a lot of Texas fans that way that we're really looking to just say, okay, what can you do if you're ever healthy?

[Rod Babers]

That's a good question. It's definitely four guys in that conversation. The Justice Terry I love, the Jonah Williams I think is at the top of the list. I've seen the Derrick Williams out there in the comments as well. And then. Yeah, and then the guy we just talked about him and Mosley, I think those are your four guys and that, that could be true impact players. Justice Terry, the reason he could be at the top of the list is because you didn't have very much disruption from your interior D line last year. I believe total, you had like 55 total pressures from all of your D tackles combined. I mean think about it guys. In some years where you had, you know, Collins and Broughton and Murphy and sweat, you had, you're like triple digit. You had 100 plus, you know, pressures combined just from your D tackle position. I mean you Were just. You were, you were beast. You were beast mode from that detail. So you need more disruption there. And that's what Justice Terry is. He causes disruption. He penetrates. So I think that's why Justice Terry could rise to top of the list because I. I still don't know. We'll see with now Javar and I think Canoe led you in pressures and KANU could. He could take it to the next level. Mr. Guy that played his first. What coach. His real football. The first time he actually put on pass American softball was. Was in spring of 2021, I believe. Something crazy like that. I mean, think about that. And he ended up starting for Texas last season. Like that's crazy. So his upside is tremendous. He could also take a huge step and help you there. But I think right now Justice Terry and Jonah Williams probably the top of that list. We know about Jonah. If he stays healthy, I mean, who else in the country's got. There's a five star safety that is right now, second string, third string potentially for you. That's the luxury Texas has right now. But if he stays healthy, I think he's gonna leapfrog a few guys just because of his skill set. Coach. He's. He's special.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Because I don't think much Champ defense is gonna work. If he can't play aggressive coverage. He. He's not going to be able to be as. Maybe I don't think as creative up front with his pressure packages, the twists and stunts that he likes to run, the second level pressures he likes to run. And your blitz rates are definitely going to increase. But if he can't play man coverage and play kind of aggressive man cover, especially situationally third down in the red zone, I think it's going to hinder his ability to completely kind of dictate the terms and dictate the. The tempo of games. Because that's what Sark. I think that's why he moved on. One of the reasons he moved on from PK was that PK was about organic disruption. He was about. He more or less really allowed the opponent to really kind of dictate the terms of the chess match and then he would adjust to it. And I think Stark wants a defensive coordinator to be aggressive and where it's going to force the issue. And that's what must Champ's defense is all about. He forces the issue. And a lot of his ag indic indicators, blitz rates, the twists and stunts up front, your man coverage rates, single high rates, those are some of the highest in the country. Even when I tracked them at the spring showcase, they were still actually pretty high the rates of those AG indicators. But the key to me is those corners and your nickel. If you can't play effective man coverage situationally, that is really going to handcuff MUS Champ a little bit as a play caller. So that's one of the things to watch. I got faith in Kate. I think he'll take a huge leap this year. I love what I'm hearing about Bo Masco and what I watched on film from him at Rutgers. Grayson, Littleton should take another step too. So I don't anticipate that being an issue. Just saying, just throwing it out there. But the Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minas, R Mass Cardi, B size, Megan Thee, stallion size, JLO size. But is you do play really good quarterbacks this year. You do play really good offensive minds this year. We'll see if Texas, you know, can line up and just play really good, effective, aggressive man coverage situationally against those teams. I do think Texas will know early on if they can do it because in spring, sorry, in training camp, even though you didn't have it available in spring, you should have your full complement of wide receivers in between. Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, M. Mosley, Jermaine Bishop. Between those four guys, those are high level type elite prospects at wide receiver. You should be able to expose any man coverage woes that you have potentially in training camp and you should know by the time you get to the season.

Well, we just went a little in depth there on corner, but let's look because yesterday we looked at the offensive depth chart. So let's go ahead and jump over to the defense today. And Jerry, you know we, we talked about the oars yesterday. There's a couple of oars on this one as well, but not as many as the offense.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah. So some of these D line spots are a little interchangeable. First of all, I mean, like, yeah, we have Marad Watson listed a couple of spots there. Right. By the way, I think Texas is really excited about what he can do this year. Obviously got banged up last year. But you know, Rod, I think one of the, the interesting or we ca. We broke the news that Kobe

[Rod Babers]

Black.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah, Kobe Black was making the move to safety. The other interesting or on here is Richard Wesley. That's how much Texas likes Richard Wesley. Is. They think he's gonna.

[Coach Bob Shipley]

It's.

[Jerry Hamilton]

It's not. Is he gonna play? He's gonna play. And the question is, can Vasick hold him off? Like, I think that Wesley had that level of a spring. But Rod, you know, you look at. We were talking about the safety spot. Looking at the safety spot headed into the spring and kind of your thoughts overall and what you see here.

[Rod Babers]

I like, I like Jelana McDonald. I mean, I think Jelani McDonald is solid. I think he's one of the better safeties in the country. But the thing about Jelani McDonald is his versatility. It is. That's what makes him special. His ability to. He's a guy you can move down into the box at linebacker depth, he can be a spy for you. I think he's underrated, actually, as a blitzer. I think that's something you'll probably see more of him in the Must Champ system. He can play, you know, single high. He can play too high for you. He can be a whole player for you. So I think that's where must champ wants to use him or that's how he wants to use him, as a versatile piece, right, that movable chess piece around the formation. In order to do that, you do need to make sure that the other safe, whoever wins that job can be a reliable single high safety and they can play that deep single high. Whether you be, are you playing man one and he's the single free safety or that deep third, you need someone that has range and it's able to do that. And that's going to be the challenge for Derrick Williams, Xavier, Phil, to me, potentially even a, a Kobe, Kobe Black. All right. If he ends up playing that other safety spot or Jonah Williams, right, they gotta prove they can do that because I think you're gonna, you know, move Jelani McDowell. Jelani McDowell around a lot and just kind of waste his ability as a versatile chess piece if you just have him playing single high safety a lot. So I think that's a big part of it for Derrick Williams. He's got to prove that he can be an asset in coverage. You go look at him as a force run defender. I mean, he's great. He can run the alley for you. He's physical. We all saw that from Derek Williams. So that actually makes him in a plus for Mustiam. Must Champ. That's a non negotiable. You got to be a physical player, especially at the safety position for him. So he's got that. But he's got to prove coming off the injury that he actually can be effective in coverage. Last year he was a bit of a liability in coverage and I think that's because of the injury. I don't think that's. I think Derek was a really good player. I think that was because of the injury. Now that he's supposed to be back 100% pre injury Derrick Williams, that's what he's got to prove is that he's got the twitch to get in on those breaks and be an asset in coverage and not a liability. Xavier feels to me, he kind of has the opposite to me. I think he has actually proven that he's pretty good in coverage. He's got to prove that he can come downhill and be a force run defender and be physical in that must champ scheme. I think that's also going to be the case for Kobe Black. Right. We know Kobe Black and cover God, play corner, corner. So he's gonna be an asset in coverage. Can he be an alley cat for you? Can he come down, take precise angles to the football and bring, you know, the hammer when he does actually have to come down and be a, a fit run defender. So that's the issue for Kobe Black and I think for, you know, Jonah Williams, I mean we all know what the issue for Jonah Williams is, right? He's got to stay healthy. I mean we, I, I don't think there's many kind of raunch wrong traits that, that you need at safety that he doesn't have. I think he's got the instincts, I think he's got the ball skills. He's got the size to do this huge by the way, if you've ever been next to him. I think he's got all that. He's got to prove that he's durable enough. The best ability is availability. So that's the only thing about safety me. But that's kind of how it works out. In my opinion. Whoever can prove that they have mastered whatever the flaw is in their skill set first dust the guy's gonna win that job. Money

All right, let's see. We got some more super chats that we need to get to this morning, so let's jump into some of those. Well, you take this one from Jay, actually, he says my favorite 50 is the 50 piece we put on Tech the last time we played. So while we're talking about that, we might as well look at the number 50 guys because we are 50 days away from kickoff and I'm probably, probably gonna butcher this and I, I, it's the norm for me, so everyone should be used to it. But Bobby V. I hope I'm saying that correctly. We got Bill Wyman the center, Cedric Woodard defensive lineman, and then Tyson King the linebacker who was a tackling machine. But those are four that stood off the page quickly. If you got another favorite, number 50, definitely drop their name in the chat.

Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Hey, you know, Cedric Woodard came out. Cedric Woodard came out in a really back in that time one Bobby Burton was had his national magazine and Maxim finger. People remember him and a couple others. And that Texas defensive line class that year was really, really good. I believe we had Casey Hampton in that group. Yeah, that was a cedar quartered out of Sweeney. I watched, I actually went and watched him in high school. I was a young buck at that time. But I went and watched Cedric Woodard. They played over at Pasadena Memorial Stadium. And he was a dominant but versatile guy on the field, on the defensive side front, you know, he, he may not have been, he wasn't Casey Hampton, obviously. I've said before, Casey Hampton's the best. He, he's the best high school defensive lineman I've seen to this day. Cedric Woodard, he could play anywhere along the defensive line at that time because he ended up 310 in the NFL. He's probably like 265, 270 in high school playing in that 3A level back when Sweeney was really good football team too. But he was a tremendous player. One of the guys that I got lucky enough to see in high school before I got into this business. He was really, really talented.

[Rod Babers]

Yeah, I played with Cedric Wooded actually. And so not a couple of years ago actually I ran into C Dub somewhere. But man, that 99D line, I'm just thinking about it. Him, he, I think he was on the edge. A hump was on another edge. And it was Casey Hampton and Sean Rogers were our D tackles. And that 99, I mean I believe that was the 99D line. That was one of the better D lines that I ever played with. Yeah, I mean that was strong. I mean and think about, ah, was a monster coming off that edge too. He was a versatile guy. Right, because they hope was like a linebacker I believe at once and then end up playing it. So that was a really versatile D line and Bob and Bobby Bunch, hopefully we said his name right. He's an all time great player by the way. I don't know why I went down a rabbit hole, but I went down a rabbit hole about Houston players. Oh, it was like 713 day actually they had recently. Right. 713 and because that's the area code in H town, 713. And I basically was looking at the best football players that played at Texas from the Houston area. This is kind of what we're looking at. And I got Bobby Bunch in the top five. I got, I got him like I got him right there with Casey Hampton. My top five is Vince Young, Iraq Pole, Kelvin Banks, Bobby Vonch and Casey Hampton. Chris Gilbert was number six on the list, just made outside six. But I mean there are probably just to give you a little background, there are, I believe there are 50 consensus all Americans in the history of the University of Texas. Fifteen of Them came from the greater Houston area. Bobby Bunch was a consensus all American in 1970. So he was a he. He's, he's. He's one of the all time greats. I know lower fans may not know the name. You should know the name. The man's the beast. I see some of y' all do, but I was a little bit ignorant to how good he was. Guy was a fantastic player.

We just talked about DBs, but Colt wants to know what's the absolute ceiling for Jelani McDonald this year? Accolades, draft stock stats, etc. Have a feeling that must champ will bring out the best.

What do you think Rod? Second, third round for Jelani?

[Rod Babers]

Yeah, the problem with safety is, you know and Caleb Downs obviously proved it wrong this year. They usually don't get drafted like very high. Like a bunch of them.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yep.

[Rod Babers]

Because it's, it's not considered a premium position. Premium position means the highest paid positions in the NFL. And which means those are the positions since I got a pay him the most, I try to get them through the cheapest means of talent acquisition, which is the draft. And so you don't see a lot of safeties getting drafted that high. That's the first thing. So he's got to make a lot of plays on the football. And I know you'll say, well Caleb Downs didn't do that. Caleb Downs was seen as kind of a generational prospect from the beginning. So people were watching him as a true freshman. Nick Saban was saying this guy was going to be a first round pick as a true freshman. Yeah. When he came to saying stuff like that about you then. Okay, then you don't, you don't scouts radar from the get go go. So he's kind of the one exceptions to the rule. But I do think Jelani McDonald can work himself into being early round pick. I think right now he's probably a mid round pick.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, I agree.

[Rod Babers]

I think he's a mid round pick right now. I think he can go. Makuba wins second round because Makuba could. Listen this thing about McCoop, okay, first of all Makuba play can play any position in secondary. Dabble said that at Clemson they play safety play, corner play, nickel, we put them anywhere. So that's one thing that he had those versatile team. But he's also was a ball hawk. You know what he did at Texas, how many times he's got his hands on the football. But in addition to that, the dude would come down and bring the hammer in the run game. He almost knock out, you know, knocked up the quarterback from Georgia. I don't know how he held onto the football. Stockton, this dude had like three or four of those types of hits just this one season at Texas. So he was a physical player. So his dimensions, because he's not big, but he plays big and he's a ball hawk and he's versatile. He's got a lot. He checks a little bit. I think he checks more boxes right now than. Jelani McDonald is really versatile as a safety, but I don't know how many times you can put him at corner, you know, I mean, put him at that big nickel and that's gonna help him. The NFL is playing now more big nickel. Big nick is basically three safeties instead of three corners in your nickel pack. Instead of five DBs, instead of three corners out of your five DB's, you put three safeties. They're playing a lot more there because the NFL is playing more big, big packages, heavy packages. Right. 12 personnel, one back, two tight ends, 21 personnel. He also had really high football IQ. Jelani McDonald has really high football IQ, too. He has a really. I've talked to him several times, guys, a really high football iq. But that's going to help Jelani, too, because the NFL wants to play more big nickel and he can play the big nickel. So he's gotta. He's got to check the ball. He's got to check a couple more boxes. But he could work himself into being the ceiling where McCoup was drafted. He could. I. Right now, I don't think he's there, but I think he could do it by the end of the season.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, I think he's like fourth. Fourth slash, maybe late third going into the season. That could elevate himself up around.

[Rod Babers]

Exactly. Agreed. Yeah.

Let's jump to the other side of the ball for a moment. Mulligan. Molly, do you think that Jermaine Bishop could have a Malachi Tony top season this year? And then we got one other super chat regarding him from dj. He says, bold prediction. Bishop has two rushing touchdowns this season.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I agree on the second part. I can actually really see that with Jermaine Bishop. I. I think as the season moves along, Sark is just. He's going to force his way in there and you have to get in the ball, get him some touches every game. And he's probably going to produce some celebrations. I would say, based on his history in football on the first part, no, not unless it's bad news and there's a rash of injuries. The difference, the difference is Malachi, Tony came into Miami in a pretty favorable position. There's a reason he graduated from high school early. Again, he was a reclass like Marcus Spears just did an early age reclass. But there's a reason he reclassed and got the Miami more as much as Nil was the opportunity and kind of getting him there. But look, he's coming into a. Jermaine's coming in a totally different situation on this team because of Cam Coleman, because of Ryan Wingo, because of Mosley, heck, even Dalen McCutcheon. There's a lot of experience around him and in front of him. I think that's going to make his. I, I think Jermaine's going to be a very big part of this team, especially second half of the season. I just think once he gets out there, Rod, he's just going to force his way out of the field. You kind of saw it at the spring showcase. He was the one guy people couldn't cover. Right. They didn't use him much, they didn't use Ryan Wingo much. But Jermaine just moves different. But he doesn't have that type of situation. It's eerily similar. His situation is eerily similar, you know, to a Marcus Spears in a basketball stage. He doesn't have to come in and be the guy. He's gonna be the guy in a year or one of the guys in a year. But he gets to come in and kind of work within the flow of a team that has a lot of really talented wide receivers. But I do want to say this. My prediction for him isn't as much touchdowns. I think he's going to get 500 yards this year somehow some way. 500 all purpose yards this year. I just think he, Roddy, he's just a big play waiting to happen. And you know, when you think about it, if you have a couple of 70 yard plays mixed in over the course of a season, you're already at 140. 500 is not a huge number for a kid that's that talented and all purpose. I mean, I'm saying it could be the runs, not the runs. A run or two for touchdowns, not the runs. Catching the football, returning a kick. Yeah, like I see a 500 yard all purpose type season from him and when you think about who else is on this team, that's, that's quite the accomplishment. But no Malachi, Tony, Malachi Tony was in a perfect spot. And the other thing about Malachi Rod is Malachi's built like a running back.

Like, he had his frame in in law. And Bishop's going to be more in that, in that worthy mold of how he's built. He's going to be bigger than worthy, but that's more streamlined build. Malachi Tony could take hit after hit because he was built like a running back. As a freshman in college, he was ready for the physicality of the game to where you didn't worry about him catching 90 balls and taking the hits, handing it to him on, on a jet sweep or things like that. I think with Bishop, it's. They have two different types of frames as well.

[Rod Babers]

Oh, that is a good question. Thank you, Mike, for the super chat. Toughest. Probably had to be K. State was always tough and not necessarily environment just because, man, Casey was a tough place to go play. I remember back in the day, the Planet. Planet. I know y' all don't want to say it in Aggie land. I mean, oh, yeah, it is at Nebraska.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Nebraska.

[Rod Babers]

I know now y' all like Nebraska. Yeah, Nebraska. Back in the day when Nebraska was winning national titles and running, you know, and, you know, competing for the Big 12 title. Yeah, Nebraska's a tough place to go play back in the day. Their fans. Their fans actually were. They weren't. They were nice and respectful, but they were. They were. They were up, man. They were lit, as young folks would say, like for those games, man, they knew that they were. They were. They could influence the game somehow. So I do remember that being a really, really hostile ruckus environment, easiest places to play. I mean, back in my day in the Big 12, I mean, Baylor and. And Kansas were just Rudy Poop terrible teams, man. They were. They were. Y' all have no idea how bad Baylor was prior to like Art Browse and them getting there. And how bad Kansas was prior to. Was that 2004 was. Who's that? Mangino. Was it? Yeah, Mangino. Yeah. Before Mangino got there, Mangino kind of really turned it around. And then they had a couple other kind of iterations of them turning around before laying sleepo got there. But I'm telling you, man, those were some of the easiest games to play and easiest places to play. Going to play those games because they were. Those teams were so bad, nobody came to support them because they were so bad. Well, Rod, stands were empty and we would, we would literally be. That's games. We make jokes on the sideline. Yeah. We having fun joking around. Or even the coach is like, we can't keep these guys focused. This team is too bad we're. We're whipping them. Too bad we can't keep them focused. So that. Those are some of the easiest places before those teams, those programs actually got themselves like to. To be competitive again.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Hey, Rod, you went through this. We talk about this all the time. I, Bobby Bowden, I think, had the great line about it, but it's. Human emotion does not allow you to get up for every game. It just doesn't work that way. You're not going to be up. It is easy to say, but you're not going to be up the same for A M in Oklahoma as you are a Kentucky. Right. Or even a Vanderbilt prior to Pavia. So, you know, you've, You've lived through that. What is that like as a player when you know, when you just know, man, we get. We need to be up, we need to have more energy, but human emotion just doesn't allow it sometimes.

[Rod Babers]

This is true. And it didn't come back to bite us against some of those bad teams, but every now and then it would. And that. To your point about that, that psychological, I guess, disadvantage you would put yourself in where you couldn't get as hyped for an Iowa State, but then I would say we ended up having good players. And then they play with you for a quarter and a half, they start thinking, oh, you ain't.

[Jerry Hamilton]

It's the.

[Rod Babers]

You ain't so bad. Start thinking like Rocky, right From the Rocky movies. You ain't so bad. And that's when you get yourself in a little bit of trouble. And I think oftentimes, you know, early on Oklahoma states would do that to Texas where they wouldn't be a sub Oklahoma State. But they up for Oklahoma because they know. But those games are always right next to each other.

[Blake Monroe]

They're always.

[Rod Babers]

I think it was either Oklahoma State before and then Oklahoma somewhere around there. So I do think that has gotten Texas a couple of times where and I, I admit go look at some of our scores back when we played some teams that we're supposed to blow out. You probably look at that score and go why did you only beat them by two touchdowns? Probably psychologically we as a team did not come out to dominate. And our opponent, regardless of who the opponent was, we should have been playing to a standard. That's tough to do. That's why you say that. But it's really tough to do like you said Jay, play that standard every Saturday regardless of the opponent. 2000, 2005 Texas, I mean they, I don't even think. No they did. It's tough to do every Saturday.

[Jerry Hamilton]

By the way, you know why I've kind of predicted in Texas isn't going to lose the game. People in the chat, don't get me wrong, Texas will end up winning a game comfortably. I've actually circled UTSA as maybe Texas worst performance and I in a game this year because it's come you're going to be jacked up for your season opener against Texas State. You're going to be jacked up the following week is Ohio State. There's no way you emotionally are going to get up for utsa. It's not humanly possible. I think they're going to win the game comfortably because Texas has much better players and UTSA gave A and M a half last year. Right. They're running the football well. If you get a half, if Jeff Traylor can get them halftime and it's, it's a game that, that's, that's a positive long term the Texas will win the game. But I just think from a performance standpoint that could be the one where people are like that wasn't really crisp and up to the standard because if you just think about where that is on the schedule, you're jacked up an opener. You have Ohio State week two. Then after utsa, it's at Tennessee. Probably good that you're playing UTSA in that week.

[Rod Babers]

Oh, that's a good theory. And they're, they're the oldest team in college football by the way there's a roto ryer breakdown. They did a study of every, the average age of every team in college football and they had UTSA as the oldest team in college football and they got a three year start at quarterback. So I, I, that's a great point. Right. And they will be. That's their Super Bowl. We all know Jeff Trailer and Jeff

Traylor is a good coach.

[Rod Babers]

We all know Jeff Trailer can coach ball too.

Yep. And so it shouldn't, it wouldn't be a surprise if Texas didn't play their best ball in that game. It's just, it's, it's positioned in a really bad spot and the opponent is just not one you're going to emotionally get up for.

Ah, let's see here. Texas on my mind. Talent only goes so far. Success this season will depend on the offensive coordinator improving on calling a game.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that. I, I agree. 100 star's gotta also take the next step. It can't just be improving the, the roster and the talent level. He's got to get better situationally. I need Sark to become elite in, in third down situations. He still hasn't brought that. At Bama he was, he was, he was elite those last years in third down situations. We haven't had access to that. Texas, his first year Texas, Texas had an elite red zone offense mostly because. Just give it to Bijan. Put some Bijan on it with a side of Rojo and you're gonna be all right. He figured that out. Right? But since then he has not been an elite red zone office. But at Bama he was an elite red zone offensive play caller. So I, I need situationally those two areas for him to improve and yeah, I need him to unleash the beast. I don't know if we've, we've seen the entire Sark playbook unleashed. I Think he's come close maybe in, in 2023, maybe 2024, but this, there should be nothing limiting his creativity and innovation. At times they're being like, oh, the old line can't block, so we can't do these things. Oh, we don't have this position. Are we missing a explosive running back? So we can't do these things Right now. There shouldn't be any limitations based on personnel. So I expect him to unleash all the cheat codes and him to be if this is not the best offense Sarkis had since he's been at Texas, something went horribly wrong. That was a good one.

Had to get that plug in there. All right, Jerry, we got one for you. From naming Roberts, he says, Jerry, I have a six 2, 172 pound freshman linebacker at a Tassocida high school. Any advice on recruiting down the road?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Well, the one thing I would say in terms of recruiting is, and, and I tell this to young kids all the time is if somebody asked me, you know, depending on where he's at next summer, I, I, a lot of people, a lot of people just go to like, okay, we're going to go to Texas camp, A and M camp, LSU and Oklahoma camp in the summer and do one day camps at all these. I like to start on all levels of division one football. You know, you have your satellite camps, but that's really for the older guys. I, I would say this if you want to start getting on the radar, if your kid's in the position to do that, if you feel like an Atasca Ceda feels like he's going to be in a position to do that. Don't just go to all the big schools for camps, go to Houston, go to Heck, Houston Christian and pick a couple of big schools too. But give yourself chances to be truly evaluated at all levels of D1. Unless your kid after this year, it looks like a national recruit or something like that, which I don't know anything about him, but if you're not on that level, I think the mistake some people make is, oh, we're just going to go to all of Johnny's dream colleges. Well, you're wasting a lot of money at that point. Go let yourself get evaluated and get true feedback from and let your coaching staff get true feedback as well from these schools because they know everybody. These Atasca seat, I can guarantee you people on the Atasca seat of staff know somebody at every college in the state. Everybody at every college at every level. Let your kid be evaluated. I think sometimes People start shooting for the stars early instead of just letting your kid be evaluated. All levels of D1. There aren't many Rod Pavers around. Go to Florida State, Miami, Texas and A M camps.

And speaking of recruiting, Juan Guards are here. Was Royal born in Louisiana or did he move there when he was young?

[Jerry Hamilton]

I'm pretty sure he was born there. He actually lives in Slidell, so he doesn't live in New Orleans. It actually shows you kind of how disciplined he is to make the trip from Slidell to Brother Martin every day. He's actually in Slidell, so a little northeast of of New Orleans there.

Hey, by the way, by the way, when you list schools, some of the best schools I've been at for a high school football game, PNG is way up that list. That is a tried and true long term fan base. Png, whether I went to watch Roshan Johnson way back in the day. Dustin, long before when he was being recruited by a lot of people I watched them against. I think it was West Orange at png. Unbelievable. Fan base. High school fan bases. If you listed the top 10, 12 high school fan bases, I'm guessing PNG is going to be almost on everybody's list. I'm guessing Greg way would put PNG up there. They've traveled. They've always traveled. 70s, 80s, 90s to now that fan base travels. It's. It's a cool spot to watch a game on a Friday night.

Oh, that's interesting. The thing about Must I be it is some nostalgia with this thing because that was one of your greatest defensive eras. It was a short one for Texas, but it was like that. 0809 defenses. I mean, I still think you had a record number of takeaways on those must champ defenses. I believe you came close to approaching the sack record, if not and on that much time defense in a way with Sackpo. So it, it's he, he. There was a. If you were a Longhorn fan at that time watching Texas football, there is a nostalgia with this thing with must champ coming back because that was just such a great era of defensive football for Texas.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah. Yeah. Give me 10 and two and get in the playoffs.

[Rod Babers]

I got 10 and two. I did not have 12 and I got 10 and two. I will say that before that 2008 season, I did predict that Texas would go undefeated that season. I was wrong. But I was close.

Yeah.

I think one of the crazy things Rod from that season was during Earl's red shirt season, behind the scenes people were saying he's the best. Like he's the best db. And I was like, whoa. Because you know, Rod, what I kept hearing, he lived in the film room. He did. He did preparation like he was a starter during his red shirt year. And I think people were blown away. And that's when he become became better than even the colleges that recruited him thought he was going to be.

[Rod Babers]

Yep. And I remember Coach Aquinas saying I thought he was going to be a nickel because I kept putting him at nickel because he could cover. And he was a little undersized. I mean, they said that once he got his safety and started making plays, you couldn't remove from safety. Yeah, no, that guy's, that guy's a safety because he's a great football investigator. And that, that translated even to his hall of Fame NFL career, which I think he will be when it's all said and done.

[Jerry Hamilton]

People ask an update on sales. Sales announces in an hour and a half. Indiana. Indiana is the favorite until they're not in this recruitment. And I do think. I do. I, I do. He had not, as of yesterday evening, inform schools of his decision. And it's really coming. It's Indiana or Texas here. I do think he will do that before he announces.
