Steve Sarkisian dropped a bombshell from SEC Media Days: five-star cornerback John Meredith is reclassifying to the 2026 class and will join the Texas Longhorns in time for August practice. Bobby Burton, Gerry Hamilton and CJ Vogel break down why getting one of the nation’s top defensive prospects on campus a year early is a massive win for Texas—both for Meredith’s development and for a recruiting class that no longer has to protect his commitment through December. The crew also evaluates what Meredith brings to the secondary, including his rare combination of length, speed, confidence, physicality and natural coverage ability. While he may not be expected to make an immediate impact as a true freshman, an extra year inside Will Muschamp’s system could position Meredith to become a major contributor—and potential NFL Draft pick—much sooner than originally expected. Plus, the guys discuss Sarkisian’s flair for delivering major recruiting news at SEC Media Days and how Meredith’s m...

Big news from Tampa guys. Steve Sarkeesian just moments ago announcing that John Meredith, one of the nation's top cornerbacks in the country who of course has been committed to Texas is reclassifying to the class of 2026 and will be available for August practice. This is huge news for the Longhorns because now they get an extra year of John Meredith getting into the system. Look, he is going to be a true freshman. You don't know if he's going to be able to play Jerry and CJ but Texas again tries to explain accelerate something. They did this in basketball with Marcus Spears Jr. As well. Did it some other sports CJ big news for the second consecutive year as well for Steve Sarkeesian on his day that he speaks at the mic at SEC media days earlier or last year, don't forget they added James Johnson and flipped him from Georgia as well as getting a commitment from Tyler Atkinson Y a little uh, flair for the the theatrics or flare for the theatrics for Steve Sarkeesian and his Group. Jerry, what does this mean overall from a recruiting perspective? John Meredith, now officially a Texas Longhorn, not somebody that have to wait until December to sign.
CJ Vogel
Yeah, no, I, I think that's, I think that's big because you don't, that's one guy who, their highest rated, second highest rated guy in your class that you don't have to battle for until December. So from a recruiting perspective, there's that. I think it's also forward thinking by Texas. Look, when he was denied eligibility, there's no doubt when this started, when he was denied eligibility to play as a senior, then he had his appeal. But this process had to have been underway before the appeal. They had to be in the works after he was initially denied his senior year of eligibility at North Crowley. So I, I, it was very forward thinking of the Texas staff. C.J. before we start taping this, we talked about three, three other players, including Marco Spears, three other athletes we should say that have reclassed up from 27 to 26 for John Meredith as a player. What does it mean? I think it means he gets a head start on his development. More so I think a lot of people say, oh, is he going to come in and compete for a starting job? Or he hasn't played a lot of high school football. I mean, he hasn't had a lot of high school starts as a corner, so I'm not there. But I think it's great for John Meredith because that gets to accelerate his development at the college level versus potentially sitting out a senior year not playing at all.
Matt Hutchison
Yeah, it gives him structure.
Jerry Hamilton
Right CJ And I think that's the biggest thing for him. Right. You need to be in a room where competition is hot. And I think it was the same kind of conversation with Marcus Spears Jr. Where wherever he plays, at least he's under your roof. If you're Texas right now, you get to mold him the way that you want and for his eligibility purposes because of five for five and well, the caliber of player that he is. It doesn't hurt you that he doesn't play or make a big impact immediately on the field, but it's one more year of this is what college football is like and for him, hey, Trees, reaping the, the rewards of nil one year earlier and he's not upset about that?
Matt Hutchison
Yeah, no, I, I think that the 5 for 5 thing is perfect for this sort of situation because he doesn't expect to be a five year player no matter what. At the same time, you can get him into your system. And develop them. That's something that Sark has talked about wanting to do with more and more players as well as Brandon Harris. Jerry, talk to us a little bit about him as a player. You said it'd be hard for you to believe that he plays right away once he jumps on campus. But what kind of player is Texas getting because he's so highly ranked? 5 star by all the services, etc. One or two player in the state.
Apartments.com Announcer
Yeah.

Matt Hutchison
To Texas yeah, I I think they're
CJ Vogel
getting a natural cover corner guy. I mean look there aren't many 6262 and change 175, 180 pound guys with that type of arm length with that type that level of feet and ability to turn and run and play in recovery mode if you're beat off the line of scrimmage. But he's an aggressive guy. He's a very confident player. I think he mirrors really well for young player. There's a guy in Dallas coach Flight who coaches him the Under Armour game known him for years. He's done a really good job helping develop John as a younger corner, especially before he started playing corner. So he's a guy who's ranked five star for a reason. I think it's based a lot on his upside as a prospect and I think that upside we'll see probably year two at Texas start to to build but a guy that has all the tools it's tools to be an NFL draft pick one day because there just aren't many 62 and change. Guys who can move, run, react like he does have the link and we'll go make a play on the ball and is willing to be physical. I mean he meets real mushtrams requirements from Texas High School Coaching Association. He's not tackling with his ass out.
Jerry Hamilton
I was going to double up on what you said about the future for John Meredith and the Texas defense. Look, I don't want to get ahead of my skis but you look at that 2027 season. Yeah this Just expedites the process for John Meredith to become a big time player on that Texas defense. Opposite of what we expect to be a third year. Cade Phillips, right. With Bo Masco, you know, a good season likely sees him depart for the NFL. Now Texas is a year ahead with what that second cornerback position might look like opposite Kate Phillips with John Meredith. And again just going back to the tools that he has. Yeah, this is a must. Champ or Faye built in a lab type of cornerback with the length of speed, the hips and the feet.
CJ Vogel
His, his before and after picture are going to look, it's crazy to me because like he is wiry. He looks very wiry. If you see him in person right now, I can't imagine what he's going to look like by spring practice. By, by the time it's, it's time to compete for a job in the spring of 2027, he's going to look like a totally different human from a frame standpoint.
Matt Hutchison
CJ we mentioned at the outset that this was a new trend that was going on at Texas. Jerry, of course covered and broke the news on Marcus Spears Jr. Committing to Texas. What were the other athletes at Texas that are some of them that are doing this right now? Yeah.
Jerry Hamilton
Camille Presley in volleyball out of Austin High, actually really highly ranked in the 27 class. Josh reclassified earlier in the week, believe it or not, to get on campus for the volleyball season. As well as Audrey Dear View, number one ranked swimmer in all of the country getting on campus again. That's a program that's no stranger to success. But once more, just like Texas football and Texas basketball recently, making sure that your young talent is on campus for a longer period of time is very much a success. And you mentioned it, Jerry. You don't have to fight four more, five more months to keep these guys and retain these guys in your class.
CJ Vogel
I, I, I'm not sure Texas would have liked the idea of John Meredith going to down to a high school in Florida for his senior year. Being that close to the University of Miami for few months. I, I don't think that was very appealing to the Texas coaching staff.
Matt Hutchison
Flair for the theatrics. I mentioned that early. Sark has it. We were waiting for some big news to break out of this SEC media days. We finally get it. The final day. What do y' all think about Sark? I mean this whole idea of him having James Johnson and Tyler Atkinson last year, now he wants something newsworthy. I feel like to follow him to SEC Media Day.
CJ Vogel
Yeah, we got to recalibrate the 2026 recruiting class rankings in July 23rd. That's going to be. I don't think that's ever been done before. And, and now we got to recalibrate the 27 class rankings, which are going
Matt Hutchison
to go way down.
CJ Vogel
But look, yeah, I, I think it. I think it is. I think the timing kind of worked out perfectly on this one because that's a process. I Living through that Marcus Spears process behind the scenes. It's definitely a process that's been ongoing for a while. There's certain hoops you got to go through to get to this point, but to be able to announce it today is. Is huge. It creates more and more news with the University of Texas.
Jerry Hamilton
I was going to say most coaches, whenever news drops like this come, they say, hey, wait until I'm off the stage. Start doing this. Really before he takes the main stage. I think is one other way in a broad scope to basically brag about his university and where he is and be excited and build really for what he's done over the last couple of years and why this 2026 season. Bobby Bucket. It's one more, you know, weapon in the arsenal for. For what Texas might be able to do this year.
Matt Hutchison
Kind of crazy when you think about it, because Meredith chose Texas over Texas A and M. This were Mike Elko doing this. Got to be happy that it's. He's going to be a Longhorn at this point in time. All right, that's going to do it. We'll have more from Steve Sarkeesian, Arch Manning, others later today. Congratulations to John Meredith, just days away now from being an official Texas Longhorn when he steps on campus. For Jerry Hamilton, CJ Vogel, as well as our producer, Matt Hamilton, I'm Matt Hutchison. I'm Bobby Burton and once again, John Meredith. Hook of horns, buddy.
