All right, welcome in everybody. Time to talk a little football. This morning on Coffee and Football. I'm Bobby Burton, joined by Jerry Hamilton. About an hour ago, the SEC and Big Ten uh, administrators asked for more time to discuss the Save College Sports act or Protect College Sports out whatever it's going by right now. They had been given a 9am deadline by the Senate to respond and either give their blessing or not. What they've done instead is say, hey, we need more time to go over over this. You didn't give us enough time to respond. We're not going to sit there and sign off on a bill we haven't even read yet. So basically it, it goes into that category of more things to come. You know, we have to keep following this. There is going to be a response apparently by both the SEC and Big Ten. According to Ross Dellinger of Yahoo Sports, the president of both conferences within each conference, including Jim Davis, the University of Texas president, will be on a conference call later today to discuss this and then they will go from there. But Save College Sports act in its final act One way or the other. It appears Jerry today. All right. Also in from a Texas perspective, Jerry, big name recruit on the line has set up a final time to make a decision.

Yeah, Landon Williams callous we'd been they put out it was going to be August 1st so we've been waiting on the win. What time on August 1st that announcement was going to come and we we had a group text last night saying hey, it's going to be around 7pm but we're going to wait for the family to put out the news. They did that. They're gonna through Dave Campbell's obviously Texas Football magazine which he is on the COVID of. That makes perfect sense. Sense to me. He is scheduled to announce his decision Saturday night around 6:45, 7:00 and I will be there on Texas football. I'll be representing on Texas football. I'll be at that announcement. We do not have the where yet. We have the win. So it'll either be at a restaurant a really big deal. That's been the plan more so than at a high school. But we'll see if that changes here the next 24 hours or so. But Landon Williams callous now has his announcement time 6:45 7:00pm Saturday. So I'll be there with OTF. We'll be there and of course Bobby, we have heard nothing different as of as of Monday night, Tuesday night. I should say Tuesday night that there's still a lot of confidence in Austin but we always wait for these guys to announce their decisions. Texas, SMU, Texas A&M, Houston, Missouri are your schools but we believe we continue to believe Texas is the favorite here but again we let those guys announce their decisions. Bobby but the if game if it goes Texas way Saturday and we'll have graphic we'll have more stuff leading up to this announcement. I I published a story this morning on on Texas Football.com about where Landon Williams callous currently sits in the record books of Texas high school football both as a rusher and scoring the football. So if you're wondering where he stacks up, he's already on the record books going into the season before a game has played his senior season with a healthy season I think he will leave high school football with the most 100 yard rushing games in history. He's currently at 41. Jonathan Gray has the record at 53 I believe I think there's a chance that he will tie or break that his senior season scoring record. He'll probably end up second all time with a healthy season. You guys can look at that we'll have a graphic about that as his announcement gets closer on Saturday. But 6:45 7pm Saturday on Texas football will be there in Richmond Rosenberg area for that announcement and we still believe Texas is the favorite there. But we'll wait to see what he announces. And also Eastern Royal put out his happy birthday to himself tweet this morning he turned 17. He had put out 729 over the weekend and people said oh no, is he flipping? Is is this is the date. This is the time he's gonna flip. He was wishing him, he was wishing himself an early happy birthday and this morning he, he announced that he was he's taking another trip around the world. He turned 17 today. Fastest 17 year old in the world

I mixed up the dates frankly and so he's coming on this morning around 9 o' clock even though he's number 39 we can hear him 38 days in two. Number two big numbers. 38 that we know of Jerry. Glenn Gaspard, uh, young man, not a young man anymore. Played for Texas in the 70s uh out of Winnie East Chambers war number 38 for the horns. I believe he was picked in the NFL draft. And then also Rod Mukilroy, the former Texas linebacker that played on some solid teams. Will Muschamp I think. Did he recruit him maybe even. No he did not.

By the way, that reminds me Jerry, I owe you an apology from yesterday. Arch Manning. So I was confused in my timing yesterday morning about when Arch committed and whether he knew Texas was going to the SEC and etc. I was way off. You were correct. My deepest apologies. You won't get those, you won't get many of those for me but sincerely I that was my my fault. Arch did have in fact no did know that that the SEC was going to be part of his recruitment when he signed with the University of Texas despite it coming Texas coming off a five and seven year before he signed with Texas. This gives you either that's how much street cred Steve Saian had as a quarterback coach at that time, Jerry or how much Arch Manning was really interested in the University of Texas or both combination.

Well it's a great Discussion because on Arch, because there's two things about that. But let's say I just want to throw this one out there too. If there wasn't a coach at Texas at the time when Arch Manning was coming out of Isadore Newman that fit the quarterback development number one on the Manning list. I mean, think about David Cutcliffe, how much he meant. And I kind of called Sark the modern, their modern day Cutcliffe in terms of quarterback development. What they were looking for for Arch, if there had not been that at Texas, Arch would be at Georgia or Alabama. He was not going to go somewhere. And I know this pain may pain some Texas fans to hear, even though there's a lot of guys that have want to go to a school their whole life and then a staff wasn't in place or it didn't work out. But if there wasn't somebody that fit what the Mannings were looking for in terms of Arch's quarterback development, he wouldn't have come to Texas even if they were in the sec. I think that's something important to know. I mean the time, timing is so key and so important in so many of these recruitments, especially these big time guys that Sark is the reason that our. Not that there could have been another coach, Bobby, but the likelihood of there being another coach from a quarterback development standpoint that the family would have signed off on, probably low percentage. So if you look at the two coaches at Texas prior, no chance. I mean, no chance. So a lot of this is timing. But it worked out for Texas, it worked out for Arch Manning that he got to go to the school he wanted to, always wanted to go to. Because it could have Bobby. It could have easily not worked out that way for him and he'd be playing quarterback at Georgia or Alabama right now, probably Georgia, because Nick Saban did tell Archie Manning he couldn't guarantee he'd be there all four years.

the app Download Today Ole Miss announced that they are suing two of their former players and actually they're I think they're co naming LSU in the suit to get back some unpaid buyout money from their contract, roughly totaling two players. One of one of the young men's actually from Mayor Texas. Yeah, right, the UMA million defensive lineman Edge Rusher that transferred from Ole Miss to to lsu. You don't hear about this much and particularly not in the sec, actually, where even if you had buyouts, people would just let it go. But Ole Miss going after LSU to the tune of a million dollars. The thing about this, too is if that's the case, that's supposed to go against their rev share cap as well. And LSU is reportedly one of those schools in purgatory right now over their involvement with csc and being over the cap and not having done things, quote, unquote, the right way. What do you make of Ole Miss going after LSU for a million bucks?

Makes me feel like I should be in Oxford for that game. And I do live shows on, on Texas football. I mean, people chat. Would y' all watch? I'm sure it'd be crazy. I mean, it just adds more to the game. I, I like the, the, the build up around that game.

And I've kind of wondered before on here. I don't think it will be as ugly as when Chris Beard went back to Texas Tech for the first time, but I'm not sure it's not going to be close at this point. I mean, there, there is. I think, I think we're underrating the Ole Miss fan hate. And I know it's not the same level fan base that, you know, the fan base that thought Sourcebee should be playing and defended the whole time, even though they're all wrong on social media, but I, I don't know, Bobby. The lead up to this game is going to be crazy. The stories written the week of the game, I'm not sure how much it's going to actually focus on the football game as much as it's going to focus on the lawsuits. The way Lane left and Lane. And I think Lane smartly came out and said, you know, the way I left, I probably would have redone. Of course you would have. It's after the fact. Of course you would have. But I think he's trying to kind of damp damn things down a little bit. But I think this is going to be wild, Bobby. That week of LSU at Ole Miss.

The idea that he has to go in to Oxford.

You know, I, My, my take on it is that, you know, Ole Miss, while a fine institution in the SEC is not, does not have the profile of lsu. And I know they had a tremendous year last year. More power to Them. Lane Kiffin did a great job with that team. Pete Golding took over and did a great job with that team. Happy for them. But there's a reason Nick Saban told Lane Kiffin, you should take lsu.

Yep.

I mean, he knows Nick. If anybody knows the pecking order of the SEC and what it takes to win in it, it's. It's Nick Saban. And so while Ole Miss fans, like, if that happened to Texas, we'd all be pissed off, Jerry.

Yes.

[Bobby Burton]

Okay, but Texas, it doesn't happen to Texas because of the pecking order.

[Jerry Hamilton]

That's right.

[Bobby Burton]

You know what I mean? It happens to an Ole Miss. You know, I think in the question I have, as, as I look at it, how, you know, at the end of the day, LSU was writing Lane Kiffin a blank check.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

And I think giving him a better opportunity to win long term. Even though he proved he could win at Ole Miss. I, I think of the difference between these two coaches though. However, Kurt Signetti, like Indiana is a pecking order school in football or has been.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, right.

[Bobby Burton]

How many jobs do you think he turned down in the last two years? I mean, how pissed off with Indiana and football is not a, you know, in basketball, different story. Football.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Indiana fans might just be happy they got their title and be okay with it and then they could turn to basketball. Who has a 20 million plus dollar roster this year. Ole Miss doesn't have that history of basketball. It's football history for them. Even though they've never won a national championship. Hey, that's something A and M can brag about to Ole Miss. They've won one and Ole Miss doesn't want any but the 1939. But that means Ole Miss is never. So you win A M fans. It's just.

Here's my point, okay. Lane Kiffin is also what, 10, 15 years younger than Kurt Zagnetti. So we got it. Yeah, we got to put that into it. So Kurt Zagnetti is not some spring chick that's gonna be bop around 64.

Yeah.

And so my, my take and the question I have for you and for those, for folks out there right now is do you begrudge Lane Kiffin for taking another job? I think if you're an Ole Miss fan, you absolutely do. But do you, if you're not even an Ole Miss fan, okay, that's number one. Number two is, is Kirk Signetti making a mistake by staying where he's at? Hard to say you're making a mistake if you're making 12 million a year.

But if you want to win long term. Is he making a mistake or just, or does Signetti just have the magic elixir on Lane?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Look, I don't blame, I, I, I don't blame him at all. Like, I, I don't, I would have taken the LSU job if I was at Ole Miss. Nick Saban would have stean would have, it's not his fault or any of these coaches fault that the timing is horrible now because of the calendar. And do I think Lane, if he was taking the job, stick it out and coach Ellis. Ole Miss through the playoffs in a perfect world. Yes, but how? The question is, how do you actually do that? This is not John Sumrall going from Tulane to Florida.

Right. It's SEC to sec, it's SEC to sec.

And it's a cutthroat recruiting world. At the end of the day, it's a cutthroat recruiting world. You have the Portal. Everything from a timing perspective. Sucks for a coach making a job change nowadays. But if you're making a job change from an Ole Miss to one of the national powers, lsu, LSU is not going to hire you and say, yeah, go ahead and coach that thing out. It's okay. We'll get enough players somehow, some way. That's not the way this is going down. So, yeah, I mean, look, I don't, I don't begrudge Lane Kiffin at all. I think 99 of us would have taken the job. The timing of it completely sucked. Signetti, I think he's got the best job security in the world. He's got a statue built of him. He probably reached his ultimate goal at a place that nobody thought anybody would reach their ultimate goal at. If I'm signetti and I'm 64, I'm, I'm, I'm hanging it up at Indiana.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah.

[Jerry Hamilton]

And because of the portal and the backing he has now at Indiana, he can be competitive. He may, I don't know if he's gonna, I mean, think about this. I know it's different with the Portal. When Bob Stoops won the national title in 2000, anybody think he wouldn't win another one? When Tom Izzo won a National Championship in 2000 in Michigan State, nobody thought that would be his last. How he's been the seven Final Four since and hadn't won another title. It's not easy.

[Bobby Burton]

So, you know, that's a really good point. I, I, I will say this. There's some similarities between him and Signetti actually. Stoops and Signetti, Stoops took over a. A program at that point. John Blake had kind of run it

into the ground

and immediately turned that thing around and won a national championship in his second year. And now he had a hell of a run. Now, nobody's saying he wasn't a great coach his entire time.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Won eight or nine conference championships.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah, exactly. So nobody's saying that. The issue is he never got back to the mountaintop. Right. So when that first national championship happened, year two, I can tell you that as a Texas fan, was I concerned that OU was going to win three or four more in the next 15 years?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yes.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah, I was. I can tell you this much. Was Mack Brown concerned? Oh, you was gonna win three?

[Tony Hills]

Yes.

[Bobby Burton]

Yes, he was. And so I think there may be some, you know, and it's Bob Stoops also. No nonsense, no fluff.

Everybody's looking for Signetti to look like Nick Saban and all that stuff. He may be more like Bob Stoops.

We don't know. I mean, we just don't know. Portal gives him a chance and Nil gives him a chance, but, man, you just look at it. I mean, there's some crazy things with all these winning championships or bust conversations. I mean, look at Miami. Butch Davis didn't win a national title, did he? But the guy, his successor, won it with all his players. Yeah, I mean, it's just this stuff's not guaranteed. And again, I go back to Tom Izzo as one of mine that I think is a truly great coach in his sport, and he won a title in 2000, hadn't won one since. It's 26 years later this year. A guy who's been to eight Final Fours has won one title. That doesn't tell you how hard it is.

I mean, I. I think overall, Jerry, we. We've kind of netted this out.

I mean, I don't think either of us begrudge Lane Kiffin one for going to LSU from Ole Miss. It was. And people in the chat are saying it, and I think it's the. How he did it. It's the, you know, I want to still coach the team, holding them hostage kind of in the athletic director that he did. But no one begrudges a guy for taking another job that pays. Like, that's just. You can't do that. Right. That. That's not. Look, if everybody put yourself in their own shoes, that would be an issue. The. As far as Signetti is concerned, him not taking Penn State him not taking Michigan, him not taking whoever Florida, whoever came open. Right. I think it's, I think that's more indicative of his age, doesn't have to climb and the area he's in and the time period we're in in college sports that the portal doesn't allows him to still be competitive no matter where you're at with, with nil. Yeah, I think those are all, all good points that that's where we net out some, some folks are asking about the Ole Miss LSU deal that we were talking about financially. It was an nil payment that was made to those Ole Miss players and apparently they've kept it and now they're going to make double over at, at lsu. So that's what they, they basically want their money back. I mentioned that. We'll have Tony Hills on a little bit later. We'll also have Brian Robeson. Jerry, you know, thinking about this and talking about Brian B. Rob yesterday got me to thinking about a lot of different aspects of his game. One of the things we're doing next week is top 25 players at Texas in what we're calling the modern era. Modern era being from 1992 to 2026. So basically what 35 years of. Of college football. Let me ask you this, okay. Is Brian Robeson in your top 25 of players at Texas in the last 25 years? It's really. I, I did my list, I started doing my list yesterday and ranking them and I was trying to figure out which defensive ends because I was going position by position. Yeah, you just start throwing names out there. It's too discombobulates my brain if, if you think about it, I, I put a couple of defensive ends ahead of Brian Robeson from a production standpoint at Texas. Brian Arakpo was one of them obviously. I think Tony Brackens. Yeah. Long time NFL player, played at Texas in the 90s. What are your thoughts on the best defensive ends ever at Texas? Because Sergio Kendall's certainly in there and in that discussion as well, did you have a, a thought on any of those guys?

[Jerry Hamilton]

I, I haven't dug down that deep into the list. I honestly, I mean a lot of people are like and I, and I'll get spanked on this one. But I've actually, I actually went back and forth on number one.

[Bobby Burton]

Oh, between Vince and Ricky. Yep.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I actually gave that some thought yesterday when I was out walking between Vince and Ricky. Does the national championship events automatically put him one? Ricky Williams career at Texas was unbelievable. Yeah, unbelievable. I mean I think Ricky Williams may be the best football player, best of, had the best football career of anybody that we're going to talk about. But it's going to be fun list to see where everybody comes out.

Yeah.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I mean where does Corey Redding sit? Yeah, on that list. I think he is, he is a possibility. Some people brought up some good names. Sergio Kendall, obviously you brought up was on that list. I think, I think Brian Robeson, what may get him in that bottom of that list. He was also really impactful on special teams. We talked about. Yes. He had six kick blocks.

[Tony Hills]

Yeah.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I mean so he was more than just a defensive end at the University of Texas. Not that that's a just thing, but he also impacted the game in multiple ways, impacted winning multiple ways. So that, that's what, that's what was interesting to me when you look at Brian Robeson was that the six kick blocks, he was a guy helped you win games in multiple ways at the University of Texas. So are there guys that had more accolades coming out of college than Brian? Absolutely. Because on a team that was as loaded as that Texas team was those years, it. There's going to be a lot of guys with, with more accolades. I mean Adjustin Blaylock. Right. And Aaron Ross, those guys in the secondary, obviously David Thomas probably had more accolades than Brian Robeson. But if you really dig into impacting winning, Ryan Robeson did it in multiple ways. Two of the three phases of the game.

Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

Tremendous. I, I was just, I, I will say this. So we limited it to 25 and I started breaking down my list. Literally. One of the things, great things about the University of Texas and following we mentioned pecking order earlier, I got up to about 45 guys that legitimately could be top 25.

Yeah.

And when I say that, I mean, look, Malcolm Brown, defensive tackle from Brennan, was a first round pick of the Patriots. He's not going to make my top 25.

Is Leonard Davis.

[Bobby Burton]

Yes.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But that, but that's the kind of thing that I'm talking about.

Is when you're a blue blood like Texas, you don't just have a top 25, you need a freaking top 50.

So the running backs I ended up with, I, So I, I narrowed it down.

In the modern era. And the problem or the thing that I, I think about is the impact they had on the on the university. I mean how do you, how do you not have Jamal Charles in the top 25? I mean my goodness. I mean he took over games at times had a tremendous career at Texas. How do you not put Cedric Benson I mean what 4000. I mean I don't even know how many yards he ended up rushing for Ricky Williams.

Yeah.

I mean Deontay foreman had 2,000 plus yards rushing in a single season.

Carried a team.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah. And so I think what about Bijan Robinson?

Well, okay, well, I love that, but that's an open ended question and here's why. Because what is the, what is the judgment criteria? Are we talking about athletic talent? Are we talking about what they, their accomplishments at the University of Texas?

I think it's career.

Then it's going to be this, it automatically becomes Vince because the fact that the reality of the situation is he has the national championship. And at the end of the day when you play the sport now, you always have these, these, these battles is, it's about, okay, well, hey, you know, championship is a team sport like winning the national championship. I understand that. But there's also an aspect, especially because of the individual that you're talking about offensively that individually, that individual, I'm not going to say single handedly, but was a major, super, major contributor to us winning the championship. And he brought the team there and he did it on an undefeated season and he did it against one of the most prolific college football teams that NCAA has ever produced.

[Jerry Hamilton]

So it was the best team ever. You know that.

[Tony Hills]

Yeah, yeah, it was, it was, it was. I think if you look at the, the amount of draft picks, the fact that they had just come off of a national championship and beat the brakes off of Oklahoma. Oh, you still sucks at 856, which is, sorry, all of that stuff. So you gotta go Vince. You gotta go, Vince. 1 ricky 2 I like it.

I, I Will say this, this is always good. It's interesting to hear how a former player thinks this.

My question to you, Tony, when we talk about this kind of stuff is why, like the thing that I think separates Vince from Ricky and why I voted. I and I also goes I voted Vince won is he did it. And you mentioned it in the game and he got to the game and he was the player in the game. And I know Ricky Williams probably had a. Ricky Williams played the minute he got on campus. Vince Young red shirted.

Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

I mean, so there's all kinds of, you know, context that we have to think about. But, you know, the, the reason I pick Vance is because when I think of Texas football and the last national champion, I think of him sitting there in that confetti rolling down over his head.

[Tony Hills]

Yep.

[Bobby Burton]

I think everybody else, most people think of that moment as well and that, that, that's undefinable for the value of it. Now, the other question I had for you.

[Brian Robeson]

[Bobby Burton]

We were also talking about great defensive ends at the University of Texas and Brian Robinson's. Robinson's going to come on this show a little bit later. You went up against him a couple times in practice, I'm guessing.

[Tony Hills]

I did. Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

Brian, who are some of the great defense ends at Texas and that you. They got Sergio, Brian Arakpo, obviously Tony Brackens was probably before your time 96.

[Tony Hills]

But Jacksonville, he's a doll.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah. Corey Reading, who Tell, tell us what you thought about some of those defensive ends and how you would maybe you don't have to go out and hard rank them because I don't want you to your former teammates, I don't want you to feel bad about it. But legitimately, what were your thoughts on some of those guys?

[Tony Hills]

Yes. So when you look at. So okay, so here's what. So you talk about. Let's talk about the Bryant, right. Bnb. All right, so when you look at Iraqpo versus Robinson, their explosiveness was different. Brian's Robinson, his explosiveness was due to his, his lower body strength and his, his immense amount of flexibility. This guy was a bender. Like, I mean, like, I mean, you punch. Like I remember one time in practice, man, I, I punched the dog crap out of this dude. Like, I, I mean I literally gave it to him, bit his body over. He still was able to get around the corner, straight back down the flat line and chase the quarterback. And so when we, when we get out of practice, I'm like, bro, how in the hell. Like, how he's like, bro, you got me good. I said, bro, I don't know. You're not gonna, you're not gonna like pumped me up, dog. I lost, I lost that rep. And I don't understand and I need you to explain it, but it's the shot put, the discus, the track, that flexibility. He had an immense amount of flexibility. When I think of iraqpo, his was quick twitch to power. Like he had a. He had an explosiveness out of this world. I mean, this guy was like his freshman year. This guy was hang clingy, like almost 315 pounds as a freshman with no form, like all, just all print, right?

[Jerry Hamilton]

And probably about £215 back.

[Tony Hills]

It was crazy work. It was crazy work to see that much power in a frame that size, right? And so both of those guys were, were, were tremendous. When you talk about impact, like impacting a game, Sergio Kendall was able to impact the game in so many different spaces, right? So it's not like you can just use him as a pass rusher. He was a phenomenal linebacker as well, right? So when I think about the ends that I played, I think about Tim Crowder, right? I think about somebody that. When you talk about effort, I look at Eric hall, that was somebody that was a big effort guy, right? It's hard. I couldn't rank them because then now you start, you have to start getting into stats and getting into impact. Tim Crowder, right? If you talk about consistency, Tim Crowder was one of the most consistent defensive ends to come out of Texas. He's played as a freshman. He had all those starts behind him. He was a very consistent guy. Corey Redden was a monster, you know, and then even when you go back further than that, you talked about the Tony Braxton, Tony Brackens, but Tony the Great, right? That's another one. Like if you go back and you watch, you can go on those old YouTube fields. I used to go to YouTube, guys, is how I know people.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Well, I know guys. They recorded it.

Listen, I, I was telling him, I was telling him how, how gracious you were to me about a rep that we had in training camp when, you know, I had just started getting in the floor, playing off as alignment, and I got a real good punch on you, you to the side, you pop back up, start chasing the quarterback down. And basically it would have been a Sack, we get off the bus and I'm like, bro, how in the hell, Like, I gave you everything I had. Bro, how in the hell did you. And you started talking to me about like, angles and bending and stuff like that. But I, I'll never forget that to the day that I live. I've never seen anything like that since then. It's crazy.

but the thing is, B, I saw you do it in Minnesota and I saw a tackle get frustrated. I said, I've been there, coached it

Hey, but Brian, we're talking about, we're doing a top 25 on tax. Football is doing a top 25 Longhorns of the modern era. So from 92 to 26, basically 35 years. And the question that we posed to Tony and Jerry and I talked about Ricky or Vince at number one for you.

Oh, I mean, could, you couldn't have just picked like two, two other people? Like, like, I mean, you gotta put Ricky and Vince, Man.

I mean, it, it really doesn't matter which one you choose. You're not gonna be wrong. Mean, that's the great thing about it. I, I, I think for me, man, I, I think you got to go Vince, man. And I'll tell you why, man. I think, don't get me wrong, I feel like this is a, I don't even feel like this is A1, A1, B. I feel like this is a CO1. And, but, but in my opinion, if you're talking about a guy that you got to put the hands or the ball in the hands of every single play, that's Vince. You know, Ricky, obviously you're going to get, if he's on your team, you're going to give him the ball. 30 plus times a game, right? But Vince is a guy that has to touch the ball every single play. So not only is he a threat in the run game, but not only is he a threat as far as being a dual athlete, being able to run, scramble, everything like that. But people forget Vince made a ton of plays in a passing game, like game winning passes, Ohio State, you know, he had some great throws in the USC game. It wasn't like he was just a runner. He could throw the ball too, and put it on the spot. So I think for me, Vince is number one. Ricky is also number one. How about that?

[Jerry Hamilton]

I got a question for y', all, and whichever one wants to go first, answer this. We've entered a new world in college athletics. John Meredith, the five star corner, and if y' all haven't heard, he reclassified last week from 27, which means he was about to be. He was about to be a senior to 26, and he is now enrolled at Texas. He moved in Monday and gets to go through fall camp. That this is the new world. It's been in football, like in obviously the nil clock starts. He'd been ruled ineligible in the state of Texas due to transfer rules. So he had a. He had to make a decision there. Am I going to go somewhere else to play high school football? Am I going to enroll early? And I think Texas and his mom said, hey, let's get you enrolled early and start. Start your development and see if you get on the field this year. But from Yalls perspective, how difficult is what he's about to try to do? How difficult is this going to be? Because he had been planning on going to college, he'd been planning on being a senior in high school playing high school football. And I obviously is a corner. So it's different than you guys are in those developmental, physical positions. But how difficult of a task is he about to go through?

[Tony Hills]

Well, let me say this because you said reclassified. So was he always projected to be 26 and then he was going to reclass.

[Jerry Hamilton]

No, no, no. He was always projected to be a 27. So senior coming up now.

[Tony Hills]

So he's so essentially he's like a junior, right, that's going into college.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Y.

[Bobby Burton]

Yes. He accelerated entire year. It's like you skipped your senior season and went straight to college.

[Jerry Hamilton]

In basketball. In basketball, we can see it in football, such a physical sport. Now he's playing corner.

[Tony Hills]

Yeah.

But what's in front of that guy?

[Tony Hills]

There's a physicality. There's a physicality to that, too. I'LL say here, I'll say, here's another caveat to that and I'm actually going to. I actually want to hear B. Rob's statement. Being a defensive player, it's not just that he's a younger guy that's getting ready to go to the next level and play college ball. Now because of nil, you actually have older, older guys that are staying in college ball longer. So you're essentially playing these. I mean, these are rookies. Yeah, these are one and two year players in the, in the professional leagues from an age standpoint. So you officially essentially are going to get ready to play these grown men at that college space. That's the interesting aspect. Like I said, I'll defer to be Rob on that and get his thought process before I get they say everything

I don't like the reclassifyation deal at all and I'll tell you why. And it goes exactly to what Tony was saying. There is a physical maturity that happens when you go from junior high to high school. When you go from high school to college, when you go from college to the NFL, you think you're a grown ass man. When you're in, in your senior year of college, until you get to your rookie year of NFL football right now, I, I don't, I don't like it. I think, I think kids should be kids. I think you should enjoy your time at high school, you should be able to compete in spring sports, you should fulfill all of everything that you're supposed to do as a high school kid, then you start your college career. So that, that's number one for me. I don't like the reclassification deal. Number two, Kind of what we've touched on already. When you are a kid that's coming out of high school at a junior, basically you're, you're, you're 17 years. Let's just say you're 17 years old. You're going to be playing against 21 year olds, 22 year olds. All right, that's like, and I know it's not the same, but when you, when you talk about, just from a mental capacity of a guy who's been in college for three or four years, I mean, dude, you are way behind the eight ball and people do not even realize how far behind the eight ball you are. Same thing when you get to the league. So from, from a mental aspect, I don't like, from a physical aspect, we're still here. How many times do you see these kids come out of high school? I was one. I got big legs. But when I got to, when I got to college, I was skinny up top, I was underdeveloped. And within a year and a half to maybe two years of the program, I looked like I had a totally different body composition than I did when I came out of high school. So there's your physical aspect. You have time to develop, you have time to get things going. So my point to this is I really don't understand the need and I don't understand the reasoning. Why? Because you're putting yourself at a disadvantage already. You know, the NCAA came out now, they said, hey, five years eligibility, that's it. That's what it is. There's no more red shirting for you to have time to go through this and develop and get physically, you know, developed and mentally developed and go through the system. You don't have that anymore. Like you're, you're thrown to the wolves right off the bat and you say, hey, your clock starts now and you got five years. So you're talking about a kid who could gain another year of experience, get in the weight room, develop himself even more before he gets to college. And you're taking that away because now you're throwing this kid in there to the wolves and now his clock has started. And to me, when you're talking about throwing a 17 year old in there, my kid, for example, my kid will graduate at 17 years old. And it worries me. I'm not even a lie to. It worries me because I had a year and a half on him. I was, I was almost. I think I was 19 actually. When I got to college, I got held back. Sixth grade, I had that. I didn't have bad grades, but it wasn't great grades, so my parents held me back. And then I ended up playing throughout high school and got to. Got to college at 19. If you take away those two years from me, I don't know what happens. And I think the good thing that Parker has is I've been there, I've done that, I can get him to that point. Right? But not every kid has that. And at 17 years old, you're throwing a kid to the wolves like that, saying your clock started and they're not even of quote, unquote, legal drinking age by the time their five years is up. You know what I'm saying? Like. Like, I, I'm just, I'm just being honest and I'm being real here. You're, you're taking this kid and yes, maybe he's an anomaly and he develops and it happens fast for him, but your, your chances of that happen are not very high. So to kind of simplify what I'm saying, I don't like the, I don't like taking the majority of these kids, reclassifying them and throwing them into a situation where I truly do not think physically and mentally they are ready for that.

I'm gonna, I'm gonna tell you guys both this. So I agree with what Brian just said. First of all, I think that it is the anomaly that makes kids want to do this. Malachi Tony last year, the, the Miami wide receiver that looked tremendous in like the national championship game and all the lead up to that caught 100 balls. He was able to do it. But there's actually a couple players on Texas roster that are, are situated this way this year. Brian and Tony Richie Wesley. And Brian, this is a position for you to watch. He's a defensive end, tremendous young player. He graduated a year early. So it's, it's one, it's Something for us to watch. The issue with John Meredith that was so shocking is Wesley planned for it for a long period of time. Meredith did not. He made the. The decision when he got denied eligibility as a senior in high school.

It was transfer rule, not age rule for Meredith.

[Bobby Burton]

So my point to both you guys is there's a couple guys situated like this. It'll be interesting to watch them all right? Now, I've got to ask you guys both this question. You're. You guys have both been thinking about Texas football a little bit this year. Spring ball or fall camp?

[Jerry Hamilton]

Starts next week. What are y' all looking for the first couple of weeks of fall camp from them? Tony, I'll start with you.

[Tony Hills]

Physicality. Physicality. Don't worry about the mistakes. The mistakes are going to happen, especially offensively. Like, I mean, look, I. I understand what coaches talk about, you know. No, me's. We judging me. I get that. But you got a whole different group of individuals, and now the. The proverbial bullets alive, right? So you're going to have mistakes, but what you can't have is especially starting with. Because I know the. The limelight is going to be on the offensive line. So from an offensive line perspective, physicality, even if I'm wrong, when I'm wrong. You knew I was wrong when I got there. Like, you felt me, like, yeah, I might have. I was supposed to block the end. I ended up blocking the linebacker, but damn it, that linebacker was like, bro, go block who you're supposed to block, right? Like. Like that. That's what we're looking for, right? We're looking for physicality defensively. I know B. Robert talked to this. Talk about this, but you just want guys like Wild Banshees, man, disrupting and blowing up everything, right? You want to be able to see control. You want to be able to see. The biggest thing is when you're talking about art, you want to see consistency out of him, right? He's been in the program enough. He's had to start. He understands what. What's expected of him.

For the backs.

When you're talking about the backs explosiveness, you want to make sure they're able. And listen, running backs run the ball. Can you pick up pass blitzes, right? Pass protection. Who are your pass protection backs? Because we know what Sark likes to do. And then from a tight end perspective, man, being able to be a factor in the game, right? And so offensively, you want to. You want to see guys go out here, you want to see Them be physical. You want to see a consistent progression, right? You want to stack days, right? You want to stack days of consistency. So now what happens is as you continue to get further and further, further along into the program, into the training camp, man, you're firing off on all cylinders. And then the biggest thing is man, stay healthy, do the things that you need to do to stay on the field. Because the reality is is that you can't make the club in the tub and nobody's. You're not going to have everything that you need if you have pieces that are banged up and injured when you're coming out of training camp. So do what you got to do to stay healthy. So I would say those are the few nuggets there's a plethora of things that we could talk about. But when I look at a team from an offensive standpoint, I want to see physicality, I want to see teams getting better and growing every time and I want to see consistency from especially the positions are important. Receivers making sure that they're running routes, they're getting their splits, they're catching the balls and making plays. You just want to see a team get out here and compete and be a well oiled machine by the time we get into the season. And you want to trend, I'm looking at it. This is the last thing I'll say. You want to trend upward, you want to consistently trend upward. You don't want that roller coaster ride, right? That's what you're looking for.

I, I gotta say there's a couple of fun things that Tony mentioned there me's if for people unaware, that's mental errors. Mental errors, yeah, yeah, just that's a shorthand in football and then you don't make the club in the tub. I like that one. Brian's shaking his head. Brian, I saw you and Tony mentioned physicality. You were nodding in complete agreement. As they start this first couple of weeks of training camp, what are you looking for?

[Brian Robeson]

Well, I knew Tony was going to say that right off the bat like that. That's one thing. Me and Tony's always been on the same wavelength since day one like so. So I knew he was going to say that. I'm gonna touch on the defense first and then I'm gonna go back to what Tony said to defensively and this is going to sound really weird but defensively I feel like is opposite of the offense and I'll tell you why I think defensively we do need to worry about me's and mental errors and Making sure you're in the right spot. You've got a new system coming at you, right? So that changes things a little bit. Normally, if we were under the same system and things like that, I'd be like, hey man, we gotta get out there, get physical. We gotta get after cats and we gotta. We got to bring it to the old line because apparently we didn't do a good enough job of that last year in camp and we got in the season and had to make changes this and that. But this year you got a new system. It is imperative for. We all know Muscat's going to line up, he's going to blitz, right? If you're not in the right gap and you got two guys in the same gap, it's 88 and out the gate. Okay? So my point to this is, is make sure that you are tuned in and you are clued in. Playful speed play full blast. But make sure you know your playbook when you hit the field because if one guy's at a spot in the defense, it can ruin your whole day. So that is number one. Make sure that on defensive side of balls, we're not creating mental errors. Now up front, same thing. We got to get physical up front. We got to get after the O line because it's only going to make us better. It's only going to make them better, right? So now I'm going to flip back to what Tony was talking about. Tony hit everything on the head and I. And I'm going to just go in a little bit deeper to explain to people why Tony is saying this. Look at our season last year. If you do not have a cohesive offensive line that can bully people around, that can pass, protect, you, find yourself in bad situations, even against not up to par teams, right? And, and I'm going to be honest with you, that is probably 95% of the reason why this Texas team did not make the playoffs last year. Okay? So it's imperative that you start getting that from day one one. Okay? Then he talked about the running backs. Not just running well, but press protect. What happens if we don't find that cohesive group of five? You better be able to throw a six guy in there that can chip, that can, that can pick up a blitzer, that can pick up a safety on the run, right? Ultimately, in Stark's offense, you. You want five guys up front handling five guys handling six guys, whatever it is, making sure that everybody's on the same page so you can get that extra receiver out in the Route, you can get that running back in the flat to be able to hit him, right? But if you don't have what you. For example, at the beginning last year, that was the missing concept. We've got to throw an extra guy in there to help protect, right? And now, now it leans on Archer's shoulders because he's got to be able to find the open guy. So going to what Tony said, they got to be physical up front in the run game, but they got to be a cohesive five man group that is working together flawlessly in the pass game. And if you can't do that, you better have a running back that can pick blitzes up as well.

Yeah, look, I just think it was they both started with physicality. I think the one thing that sometimes is lost in football is the rules of change to be for more offense, right? Sells tickets, ticket prices go up, blah blah blah, TV highlights, right? We live in that world and the rules are certainly made for offense and all sports these days is they both started with physicality. And I think, you know, the schedule that Texas is playing this year and the pursuit of that goal at the end of it, if you're lucky enough, fortunate enough to get to that game. You know, if we think back to even last year's Miami Indiana game, there was a level of physicality in that game that was required to be a

national on both sides.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Both sides, Indiana had a. There was. Miami was a physical team on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Indiana couldn't just win that game because they had the best quarterback. They had to win that game physically. They had to stand up physically to that defensive line of Miami in that offensive line of Miami, which was two physical units with a physical mindset in their run game. And I think it was great that they both started there because I guarantee you this, we know Will Muschamp started there when he got to Texas. Think about the shirt he wore and think about the comments he made at thsca. Think about what Jabar Jaluk's comments at ts thsc about if you're not physical Running the football for me. We'll get you a cap and a clipboard to hold. The coaches are saying the same things that Brian and Tony, national champions who. Remember. What do we think about with that Texas team? The offense, the zone read Vince throwing and running the football. They won those games up front, though, at the end of the day. And I think. The NCAA this morning says it has suspended Tennessee linebacker Aran Carter two games for a $427 flight, which he repaid during the NFL draft process. I give up $427. Yet we have high school kids that are taking money illegally and getting paid before they enter College. But $427 is going to cost Aran Carter, the Tennessee star linebacker, two game. He repaid it, by the way.

If he has that unforgettable season, I think people will probably rank Arch Manning ahead Of ey whether people agree with that or not when ESPN does these lists over time because that that in the Manning family Arch will have done something that hadn't been done at the college level.

This will surprise some folks. In that list of that top 25 I only put two quarterbacks. I only put two quarterbacks. Top 25 players last 36 years. Michael Schuller, will Landon Williams callous finish as a five star? Can't answer that for people that we don't oversee like 24, 7 ESPN and on 3. But is he a five star in your estimation, Jerry? What, what do you think?

I think on Friday nights he is a five star player. I will say that as far as when you do rankings, okay. If you're ranking these, all these players, so much of this stuff comes down to how many running backs when you're in the room. Bobby, we've all been there. How many running backs backs are you going to rank as a five star? Because whether people like this process, this rankings process or not nowadays on some of these positions due to NFL draft and one of the interesting things is you don't really want to have three or four or five star running backs in a class in these rankings anymore because it doesn't pan out.

Nobody the three and four guys aren't going to be drafted in the first round.

[Jerry Hamilton]

That's right. So right now there's two five star running backs in the rankings. It's come on spell who's very good. If you haven't watched him out of McKeesport, Pennsylvania committed to Georgia and David Gabriel. George's out of Baylor school, Chattanooga. I think he's from Toronto. Huge win for Tennessee over Ohio State last week in recruiting. And then you have Landon Williams callous who's right outside those five stars. I mean he's right outside of it so. And he is a five star by some people. So the question becomes are you going to have three five star running backs rated in your top 32? At the end of the day I think Landon is a five star football player on Friday nights for sure. I don't think there's any doubt. Just go look at where, look at what he's done. I'm just looking at this.

I'm one of those guys that doesn't really care where a guy is drafted. I care about what he does at the University of Texas now. I'm happy for him when he gets drafted highly and I think it looks good. But I want him to be a five star in college.

Yes, I'll answer the question first. Yes, Texas basketball is in great hands when Sean Miller is hired. I think there were some people said, is this guy, can he do it anymore? He hadn't been at a major college in 10 years. And one of the things I said was, look, he's been at a sweet 16 or better. Every job he's ever had, and it took him one year to get there at Texas. It was a bumpy road year. One's gonna be bumpy, but he's now he's four for four, sweet 16, all four of his head coaching jobs, Xavier, Arizona, Xavier, and now Texas in getting Xavier to Sweet 16 early date, two times. By the way, he's a tremendous coach. I think he's one of the elite coaches in the college game. And I think he may be as motivated as any coach because he hasn't been to that final. He's had two, three rough losses in elite eight games. I do think Texas basketball is in great hands. I think it's perfect timing. We talked about some of this stuff with timing. I think it's perfect timing for Texas. I think it's perfect timing for Sean Miller because the portal in the nil era, in the nil era, Texas had a decision to make in this off season on basketball. Prices went up 3, 30 to 40% on players. If modest had jumped in the portal, he could have made $5 million from Louisville or somewhere. So Texas is like it was put up or shut up time in basketball for Texas, and they've stepped up and it's great. And he's got a roster full of future NBA draft picks. Yeah, he talked about Marcus Spears yesterday. We had an article on that. I put out on a couple of stories that Marcus Spears was doing very well in his first few practices at Texas. Sean Miller talked about how he's. He's in the gym, weight room at 6:36 in the morning. He talked about how that kid's motivated and may have the highest ceiling in the program. Not necessarily he's not going to be Texas best player this year, but he'll be a top three pick after 2028. He'll be Texas two years. Talked about Austin Goosby, talked about Isaiah Johnson, David Punch, all those guys. Talked about modest guy, 6% body fat at 7. And I've reported that 6% body fat at 7 foot 255. There aren't many people in the world that are that. He's got a tremendous team. My whole goal, I know some people already like national championship or bus for Texas basketball, I'm not there. I'm not there in football. My goal is to be a number one or two seed. I think if you're a number two seed in the tournament, you're going to have every opportunity to have a great run. And the number one or two seeds cover 80, 84%. I think of your last 25 national champions, 21 of them have been a one or two seed. And obviously if Texas, there's a lot on the line for this Texas team. If they can get to be a one or two seed, there's a chance. They play in Fort Worth and then San Antonio. It lined up that way for T.J. ford's year. They went to the national championship where they had the Sweet 16 Elite Eight in San Antonio. That's where you're gunning to be. And I look, I think they got a tremendous roster. I think he's going to start five future NBA draft picks this year. I think they got a chance. Now the toughest part, the easy parts, the easiest part is happening this summer, the workouts with the team. And I've heard great things. I've heard the staff's very pleased. Now the hard part starts. Everybody, everybody in that team expects to play right now. And they probably have a minute number in their head. Some of those guys aren't going to get as many minutes as they want. So now that the toughest part of coaching begins, when this start, when the season starts, is managing the guys on your roster and keeping them all in the Buy in. They're in the buy in right now. I think Sean Miller's the guy to do it.

Final question for the day, Jerry, Will Easton Royal flip or stay? This for Big Poke. A lot of questions in the chat about Easton Royal. His big announcement this morning was actually that it is his birthday apparently. So we kind of told that Eastern Royal, the wide receiver out of New Orleans that ran, I think the 10, 1 7, 100 meter Jerry in the rain committed to the University of Texas. He is still committed to Texas, but obviously entertaining offers from both LSU and Florida at the same time. Your thought, Will Easton Royal flip or stay?

I'm, I'm on the same place. I've been with this recruitment the whole time. This recruitment's going to go till late November because it's not like if he doesn't flip, LSU is going to walk away. I'm going to tell this may not be popular to hear for people. I'm not sure the college coaches really know what he's going to do right now, Bobby, and I think you might be able to have some insight there too. It's like, look, we feel good about it, but you don't because he's, he cut off communication with all college staffs for a while to kind of go through this process. Him and his mom.

Clear his head. He's got a ton of pressure in that state. I, I maybe as much as any player outside of Leonard Fernet. Honestly, I think that's kind of where he's gotten to as a prospect. But Fernet was number one in America at St Aug, so it's a little different because that's Frank Wilson's school and everything. There's a little difference there, but I think the college coaches don't really know right now. I think you can feel good about it if you're Texas, but I, I still think they think this thing's going to be a fourth quarter recruitment, which means it's going all the way to November.
