Jeff Howe, Gerry Hamilton, Hank South, and Jordan Scruggs break down the latest Texas recruiting intel, starting with the two biggest remaining targets on the 2027 football board: five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales and elite running back Landen Williams-Callis. The crew discusses Sales’ upcoming decision between Texas and Indiana, why the Hoosiers have made this recruitment a priority, and how Texas has remained heavily involved down the stretch. The conversation also dives into why Texas is trending strongly for Landon Williams-Callis after a major official visit, how Jabbar Juluke and Steve Sarkisian have helped push the Longhorns into prime position, and what his addition would mean alongside Noah Roberts. Plus, the guys shift to basketball recruiting after Marcus Spears Jr.’s arrival at Texas, the impact that could have on elite 2027 guard Beckham Black, and why the Ohio State weekend could be one of the biggest recruiting events of the season.

latest on the top two targets left on the football board for Texas in 2027 and we'll get to some basketball recruiting here on this latest edition of the Recruiting Breakdown here at on Texas Football, I'm Jeff Howe, joined by Hank South, Jordan Scruggs and Jerry Ham. This edition of the Recruiting Breakdown as all of our editions. Editions of the Recruiting Breakdown are brought to you by Mark Saunders. Jerry, I'll, I'll start with you two guys left. It's really weird. It's like we're back in the, you know, the Mac Brown days where you get to the season and you got one or two guys left. But that's where we are. Montun Sales Jerry is one of those guys. He's got a decision coming up on Friday. Sounds like it's down to Texas and Indiana. Jerry, what's the latest?
Jerry Ham
Yeah, I think, I think the, the, the, the number one thing does lead off with is he's announcing at 11am Central on the Pat McAfee show and that was always going to be the case and there was no chance a five star receiver out of Indianapolis Lawrence north wasn't going to announce on the Pat McAfee Show. So it was just when Pat McAfee shows were going to air and originally we'd heard July 10th, well, that wasn't going to be possible. So it's July 17th on the Pat McAfee Show, 11:00am Central Time. And yes, we, everything we hear, all the intel we've been saying for a couple of weeks is this is Indiana or Texas. What this is expected to come down to with obviously Ohio State, LSU and Alabama having a hat at the table or one the final five, however you want to say it. But it's Indiana versus Texas and look, we've had Indiana as the favorite. So as most people in this industry for a while and I think it's, I think it's very interesting with this recruitment that, you know, look, there's been some really good conversations with Texas there. The communication has never dropped off with Texas since the ov. It's only gotten stronger. Chris Jackson's had multiple phone calls, zoom calls, whatever you want to call it. With Munching Sales, his circle, one of the other things was the agent made the OV to Texas. So the agent made the official visit. There's actually face to face contact and conversations there within this recruitment. And Munching had a great visit to Texas. By all accounts, multiple people had a great visit to Texas. Then you get to the Indiana part. He's been on campus in Indiana more than any other college. As you'd expect. He was at the national championship parade, all these things, all those visits to Indiana, he still hadn't committed to Indiana. So if you're Indiana, you know, you've been in a good position. But what's always held him back from making an announcement for you? I think that's what I think the thing that Indiana always battles, and we're going to talk about this with Landon Williams, Callis, with the schools that are trying to beat Texas for him is, you know, look, Sales didn't grow up envisioning himself dreaming about playing at Indiana. So that's a hurdle the Indiana staff have to get over whether they want a national championship or not. Even if they've been to the playoffs twice and lost in the national title game. Doesn't, doesn't change the fact that Monchen Sales did not grow up dropping, dreaming about playing if college footballed Indiana. And that's a hurdle that the Indiana staff has to get over from an nil perspective. They put more into this than any other high school recruit ever. Or you know, that's pretty easy to say at this point. That doesn't mean Texas was going to, if they lose, this isn't going to lose it because of nil. That's not going to be the case. This is a very competitive nil race. But what it does tell you is Kirk sir, for a guy who really dives more into the portal and builds his team around the portal, he and the Indiana alumni and everybody around the university understands how important of a recruitment this is because the number one or two ranked receiver in the country is at Indianapolis and Lawrence North High School and he's in the class right after you won a national championship. So there is a huge level of importance for Indiana in this recruitment because of who Munch and sales is, what he is as a prospect and when. This is for Indiana and this is the first time that guys that there's ever been really pressure for a kid to stay in state and go to Indiana in football. It's not lsu. We're not talking about eastern rolls recruitment but it is different for a kid in Indiana now because all the pressure has always been to go to Notre Dame if you're really good. Not Purdue, not Indiana. Now for the first time there's an expectation of a top rate player in the state to go to Indiana. We've never heard of that before. I've been in the business 20 plus years so it's going to be an interesting decision. I will say positive for Texas in this as there's been great communication from the from Manchin to the mom to the agent since the ov if there's a little bit of keeps you wondering right now. Texas doesn't know where he's going three days out from his announcement. The kid definitely knows where he's going at this point. There's no decision to be made here. It's just when are you announcing?
Jeff Howe
Yep, Jerry just laid out there. Texas has done pretty much all it could at this point to get munching sales in the fold as they continue to try to hang on to Eastern Royal. Hank, I'll go to you first on Landon Williams callous. We've said it before, we'll say it again. Texas has a fantastic running back in this class in Noah Roberts but Landon Williams callous. Everything ain't changed after the official visit. Texas has picked up a lot of momentum. Still no decision date as we sit here right now Hank. But where do things stand on your end with Landon Williams callous in Texas?
Hank South
Yeah, nothing's really changed since that official visit. We we at OTF like where Texas is trending in this recruitment and that wasn't necessarily the case earlier in the month of June. For a while you know we all thought maybe Noah Roberts and Then go into the fall, do some senior evals, maybe circle back on a kid they had recruited prior or even use the portal, you know, depending on, on what the running back room looked like after the, after the season. But you know that official visit June 19th to 21st, Landon Williams callous followed through and took it. And, and ever since then it's been more and more positive momentum towards Texas and that's where we sit here. You know, like you said, he doesn't have a decision date set but mid July. We believe a decision is coming in the month of July at some point or certainly before his senior season starts. And Texas is pushing all the right buttons. For the last few weeks we've been reporting we think it's Texas and SMU or maybe the two programs out front. But that doesn't mean other schools aren't, you know, trying to, trying to change that. Obviously Texas A and M has recruited him heavily. He's, he took eight official visits. So he has, he has all sorts of schools recruiting him heavily. But Texas and SMU have been the two common denominators when we're talking about this recruitment. And you know, we still are all very bullish on Texas's chances in this one to, to get this one, to get this one over the finish line. And so like you mentioned Noah Roberts in the class, he's locked in, you know, big time running back out of the state of Arizona. But Landon Williams callous is obviously a type of talent you can't deny, you can't. If that's somebody that wants to join your class, there's a spot for Landon Williams callous in your class. And so Texas Jabarja Luke has done a really good job. Steve Sarkeesian's obviously done a really good job. And I know Jerry's mentioned this a lot but you know, the fact that people in his, in his circle can envision him being at Texas and being that next great Longhorns running back and you know, tradition, tradition rich program at that position. That's a big deal. Kind of how he mentioned he likened that with Monchin sales. Not really envisioning himself playing it at Indiana at superstar football level but you know, certainly Indiana's on the rise there too.

We're still on the lookout for a decision date. Maybe Manchin Sales gets his announcement this week and then we see an announcement date. But we do expect I think we can all agree there's going to be some sort of big ceremony. It's not just going to be a spur of the moment decision.
Jeff Howe
Yep. Jordan, I want to go to you here in just a second on some Landon Williams callous intel as well. But before we do that, Jerry, let's go ahead and give a shout out to our long running sponsor here on the recruiting breakdown. That's Mark Saunders.

Jeff Howe
All right, thank you Jerry Jordan. I want to get your read on this because you look at Landon Williams callous recruitment. We mentioned he's taken eight official visits to various schools. A M has felt good at one point in time. SMU is like this chances at one point in time. But getting back to what Hank said, Jordan, ever since the official visit, Texas has been the one constant that we've heard mentioned in this recruitment no doubt
Jordan Scruggs
checking in with sources in that week or two coming out of the ov. You know, we heard smu, Texas, we heard A M Texas, even some uh, Houston versus Texas. But like you said, the constant has been the Longhorns. I don't think that has changed one bit as about a month has passed since that ob. And hey, I, I think Texas versus the field is a, a pretty good projection to make here out of the out of state programs he took trips to. Mizzou is the only one that is being mentioned still. But to be honest with you, I'd be more surprised or I don't think there could be anything more surprising than Landon Williams cows ending about Mizzou over those in state programs. I definitely think he's going to play in the lo State in college and specifically in Austin. I think the Longhorns, they've done a really good job here. Credit to Jabarja Luke. This was not an easy recruitment to pick up on for him. You got to think about Landon Williams House has been recruited by three different running backs coaches in three years to show choice. Did a great job early on. I have a lot of confidence saying Texas was the leader his sophomore year. Till this day I never saw tishard choice recruit a sophomore running back as hard as he was recruiting Landon Williams cows and that helps a lot. Chad Scott came in, it was a bit rocky there and then Jabar Jalu came in. He's built this relationship up throughout the spring and it kind of culminated on the OB to some degree. Not that he gave a commitment by any means, but they crushed the ov, hit it out of the park and Texas has obviously been trending since. So still no decision date in mind, but definitely like the Longhorns here. And you know, while we're on the topic like Hank and Jerry brought up, there's a key person in his circle that could envision him as the next great Texas running back. Well, listen to this. This year, Landon Williams callous was on the gatefold cover of Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine. Joey McGuire, the Red Raiders, yes, they're on the front, but you flip one page, you'll see Landon Williams cows. He's the first solo high school football player to appear on a cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football since Midland Lee Cedric Benson in 2000. Just to kind of put it into perspective while we're on the topic of potentially the next great Texas running back. So I like the Longhorns here. I think it's been Texas has been the team to beat for nearly a month. And I think that will pay off for them at some time this month when he eventually makes his decision.
Jeff Howe
Landon Williams, callous is going to have a better college career than Cedric Benson. You heard Jordan Scruggs say it. First edition of their.
Jerry Ham
More importantly, if you turn the, if you turn Dave Campbell's around, Texas Tech's on the back of the COVID That's
Jeff Howe
certainly, certainly one way to look at
Jerry Ham
it, which is what they deserve right now.
Jeff Howe
Jerry, let's, let's actually turn the page. No pun intended. Let's go to basketball. Marcus Spears Jr Obviously, the commitment was massive. We covered it a ton here on the channel. He's now enrolled, got his student id. Hopefully he doesn't pull an Arch Manning and lose it somewhere on campus. But he is in the Texas program as we speak. He. Jerry, what's this done for recruiting in the 2027 class? He was the top prospect in the country in 27. What's the reverberating effect of him landing in Austin?
Jerry Ham
Man, you know it. Beckham Black, I've heard that resonated with him. We're not saying Beckham Black's going to Texas. He's going to be number one or two in America in this class. Either him or CJ Ross or maybe DeMarcus Henry, they're going to end up the top three in this class long term now that Spears is out of it. But look, it did resonate with him. I've talked to multiple people because thing of know about Beckham Black, the younger brother of Anthony Black, obviously Orlando Magic guard that played at Duncanville Coppell before Duncanville is. Beckham Black is a DFW kid. He grew up in Dallas. He grew up in Coppell, Duncanville. He may go to Southeastern Prep in Orlando. Now place one of the top prep schools. David Peavey, former Duncanville coach, is his head coach. Obviously very close to that family. But Beckham Black's a Dallas DFW kid. And what you see happen in recruiting a lot of times is what happened with Beckham Black. You know, look, these kids know each other in dfw Austin, Goosby choosing Texas last year. Okay, that was, that was a big one for Sean Miller. He's the number one ranked prospect in the state of Texas. One or two, depending on your ranking. Then Marcus Spears follows up and reclasses and goes to Texas in 26, obviously, but he was number one in 27. So you're starting to see some of those top guys stay home and go to the University of Texas in basketball, that's going to resonate with some guys. And it resonated from what I hear with Beckham Black. We also hear it on Texas football slash OT basketball. If it's a basketball show, that an OV to Texas for Beckham Black is likely. And that could be for the Ohio State weekend, September 12th, 14th. I don't think it's locked in yet, but I think that could be trending for an ov. I still think Duke is a slight leader over Texas and Arkansas for Beck and Black, but I think this commitment, it kind of raised a lot of eyebrows for other prospects and was like, whoa. And that included Beckham Black, who obviously is close with Marcus Spears and the DFW guys.
Jeff Howe
Hey, real quick, Jerry, you mentioned that Ohio State weekend. Hank, I want to go to you real quick because you've covered some big recruiting weekends here at Texas. What's your early anticipation for that game when Ohio State comes to town on September 12? It is a night game. What's your anticipation in terms of what the visitor list is going to look like?
Jerry Ham
Yeah, I mean, when we're at the
Hank South
elite camp earlier this summer, I'm, I feel like every kid we talked to said, I'm coming back for Texas, Ohio State, and that's including kids from Georgia, Luke Neighbors, the big time Ed, Roger from Buford, kids from California. That's going to be, that's going to be a, probably the biggest turnout of the season. If I had to go ahead, maybe Ole Miss, I got to think they're going to get a lot of kids in for that game. Especially with being a nighttime, you think about kids playing on Friday night, having a chance to get to Austin by Saturday night. I, you know, I would probably, you know, compare it to that Georgia weekend back in 2024 with all the kids showing up. It's going to be a lot of, you know, obviously the, the, the current commitments in the class, in the 2027 classes, but also you're going to see a lot of underclassmen as well as, you know, as they've kind of started to, to push those guys, push, you know, more heavily onto those guys with the, with the recruiting contact opening up for that, the rising junior. So I, I would expect every Texas commit there that can make it certainly a lot of the, the early 2028 top targets. It's going to be, it's going to be a big turnout in Austin on September 12th for sure.
Jeff Howe
Jordan.
Jerry Ham
I was gonna ask Jordan. I'm putting Jordan on the spot. Pick one player in 28 you want to see at that Texas Ohio State game.
Jordan Scruggs
James Foster, the third, the linebacker, safety, kind of tweener projection out of Lancaster in the southern sector of Dallas. I think he's the top player in the state in 2028 and would really feel needs of Texas at two huge positions of need and linebacker and safety. Great young man. Yes, sir, no sir, kid. And kind of like the Brian Swanson recruitment. Really like Texas's position versus the field about a year away from decision time. Like the Brian Swanson recruitment. Chris Gilbert has a huge role in this one, if not the biggest role. Chris Gilbert was the head football coach at lancaster for about 12 years when Foster was growing up. And Gilbert's kids, whenever they were in middle school were taught and coached by Foster's father, who's a middle school coach teacher at the Lancaster Middle School. So lots of like for the Longhorns early on. And I do know for a fact he'll be in Austin for a game or two this fall. That'll probably be one of them.
Jeff Howe
