We're going to get to those in a little bit. Obviously it's Monday. Marcus Myers will be joining us here in about 10 minutes or so, so always a delight to talk to him. What Sark meets with the media here in just a little bit. They'll be practicing here soon. It's, it's go time, guys.

It is go time. I mean, look, they've had four practices. They get on the field this morning at Frank Dennis fields up near I35 in about 15, 30 minutes. We, we didn't get to see them at. Talk to Steve Sarkeesian around 10:45. Should be a lot of fun. Gonna ask him a little bit about what happened over the weekend with the Texas really going at it hard on Saturday night inside dkr. We had some news and notes on that that we can discuss in this episode. Should be a lot of fun. A couple of guys standing out right now on defense and I mentioned this in our article, a couple of guys disrupting, causing a lot of disruption, that is Justice Terry and Rasheed Biles right now, obviously we already knew about Colin Simmons and what he can do, but that's what's happening on defense. On offense, the receivers in the offensive line still trying to figure out what the rotation is on the second team receiver group and then the first team offensive line, they are playing musical chairs at left guard with a number of different permutations. But, uh, it is, uh, all in good, uh, good, good spirits right now over at uh, at Texas. Talked to someone behind the scenes yesterday about it and Longhorn's extremely excited at this point about their Team heading in to 2026.

Yeah, I think. Look, pads, come on. Full pads. This week. This is where competition really starts. And this is where people can begin to separate, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, while anybody that plays for Mustamp because, you know, you, you know the shirt and you know, you got to stick your face in the family. This is must champs, like favorite week of the year when the full pads come on, I think. But this a big week. The competitions really begin this week. We'll get Marcus on to talk about that here in a second as well. But yeah, I, I, this is, I'm excited about moving forward these ne this next week and a half, two weeks here for, for this Texas team because I, I think you'll begin to start seeing some separations and some, some people locking into jobs potentially. Obviously, left guard is being talked about a lot with that job. We also have a safety spot that's, I think there's some really good competition at. Is there going to be competition at the corner opposite Bomasco? Potentially. So we'll see on that. But full pads, come on. This week, it'll be interesting to see what Sark has to say, where he says his guys are at after the first, what will be five practices by the time he takes the mic. There's something else I got to hit on. It's, it's become the biggest topic ever. It's crazy. This is when you know you need the season to get here fast. The King Coleman catch. And it's become the to talk is after the catch has become. Was the ball tipped? I'm just, I'm gonna say this one more time. I said it last night, and I'm going to take you back. There's no, nobody's ever writing this in our businesses about players, about reporting anything. But I'm going to put, I'm going to put you on this one. Like, I'm going to say it like this. I had Marcus Spears commitment done June 17. He didn't commit till July 9. This is another one like that. That ball was not tipped. Does it matter? It doesn't matter. I mean, so somebody's foot got stuck in the ground, the ball slips out of their head. Who cares? But it's taken on this life of its own. It's crazy to me. But the ball was not tipped. And life's going to be okay.

I could confirm that. And we, we said as much. And it was Arch Manning who threw it, by the way. So don't read too much into a single play, guys. You know, you try to. Oh, well, you know, good lord. Just appreciate there's a reason. You know what, here's the. There's a reason Texas chopped up the back end of the play and didn't show who threw it and all this other stuff, right? I mean, it's so people wouldn't overreact. Yet they still did. And then they tried to make up versions in their mind that fit their, their narratives to Jerry's point. The ball wasn't tipped and Arch Manning through it. And it's okay, it's okay. That happens. He's throwing a 20 yard in. You know, he's got pressure up the middle. And no, it wasn't tipped, but who cares? I mean, the focus should be on. What in the hell Cam Coleman just did that looked like Spider Man. I mean, I had somebody that was at the Spider man movie the other night texted me. He said he looked exactly like Spider man on that play. Yeah, that's. That's the viral moment.

Yeah, if. If you focus too much on a single play in a scrimmage and we'll talk to Marcus Myers about this when he comes on. You focus too much on a single play in a scrimmage, you don't under. Or. Or in a practice. You guys don't understand what a practice is because I'm telling you, Arch is throwing it. Aunt KJ Lacey and Diabell. Texas throws more adult or NFL throws in their practices than any team I've seen practice. It is a NFL caliber throwing display. During their practices, they challenge the quarterbacks and. And I've seen Colt McCoy practice at Texas. I've seen Vince Young, I've seen Sam Ellinger, I mean, Chris Sims, all those guys, okay? I've seen them all do it. Texas with Steve Sarkeesian, runs more deep routes than anybody that's come across the 40 acres that I've seen. So get. I. I think folks just don't understand. You know, they thought that was a cross cross. Somebody thought it was a crossing route. It was not. It was 20 yard in. You know, and so my point on all of this is the idea that every practice is perfect or every quarterback is perfect or every player is perfect. It. That's not how practice works. It's practice. It's called practice for a reason. I want to.

Hey, Sarah. I think it's Sarah that called it tip bait. I love it. I love it. Hey, Marcus, in all seriousness, you know, sure, people try to take one. One play. And by the way, Cam, Coleman's not making superstar catches every single play either, right? So he's dropped some, you know, big moment. I want everybody to understand he's dropped some before. What. What do you think of that? When you take one moment and it goes viral and then there. There's a subtext around it that people try to blow up into something that it's just Not. I mean, you're a former player. You've been on the practice field. You've probably seen Vince Young trip. I mean, it's like, you know, if we. If in 2004, Vince Young goes out and trips in practice, and that's a meme. I mean, everybody said, oh, my God, Vince Young can't. You know, he's. He's folding under pressure, he's tripping over the yard line. I mean, what. What do you make of that? Whenever you're sitting back there watching it as a former player realizing the scrutiny that every single play is undergoing.

Yeah, that was really all I was gonna say is welcome to Texas. It's. It's, you know, the social media area era. Everybody has, you know, a take on it, and it's, you know, actually absolutely paramount that they get that take out there. And, you know, it becomes polarizing if it's about Texas, you know, and a number of, you know, there's probably a handful of fan bases that. That face that, but I would say Texas is certainly one of the ones that's up there. You know, I know we've heard over the years different teams that have called us their rival and things of that nature. And so whether it's, you know, just a fan ready to kind of crash out early in the year and, oh, are we going to see more of what we saw at the beginning of last year, as if the way the year ended, you know, wouldn't, you know, pretend to better things, or it's a rival fan base or it's just something for clicks. Right. Like, half the time I see some of this stuff out there, and I don't know if some of the people believe what they're really typing, but they know that, you know, people are going to engage. And so to me, you know, it's neither here nor there. I mean, I guess after I started kind of hearing all this scuttlebutt, I maybe went back and looked at it, but I was still trying to wrap my head around how the hell Cam Coleman got up there. Like, did he have a jet pack on and just, you know, drop it off midair, like. I don't know what, what. You know, to me, that would be the thing that I would have taken from that more than anything. But, you know, every. Everybody has a take. And so I've. I've enjoyed kind of sitting back and. And listening to everybody weigh in on it. To your point, though, Bobby, I. I couldn't care less. I've. I've seen any number of things happen in practices from guys that, you know, will probably end up having gold jackets. So I, I just, I, I take it as, you know, it was a practice and as far as I'm concerned, we're at a game that's a complete pass. So

This. And by the way, the practice that, that, that happened in was not Friday. When they released. Did they release their video Friday or Saturday? It happened on Thursday.

Yeah, so it wasn't even the day of, it was the day after. And so it, it was kind of crazy. Marcus, you, you went out with us a couple days for practice this past week. Got a chance to talk to you about that. You've heard and I know you've talked to some folks yourself. Your general thoughts on the team right now for 2026 based on what you've seen and heard from. From behind the scenes?

[D]

Yeah, I mean, I think I would probably go right back to what I, you know, kind of submitted for our sideline debate. You know, I know y' all talked about it and, and I just, you know, was kind of in the write up, but I'm really impressed with the overall conditioning of the team and the interior defensive line. I came into camp kind of thinking like they would be good in the few days that, you know, I got to see them and you know, from folks that I know have been out to a couple more practices, that defensive line unit is going to be special. And I don't think that interior defensive line is going to have, you know, any issues depending on how Muschamp wants to deploy them. They have a number of guys that they can, you know, throw at the position depending on the scenario. And I can't remember which one of the, you know, things that we had thrown out there and discussed previously, but I know for a couple of. Whatever my answers were on some of the, you know, different, you know, takes we've given has been justice, Terry. And so to kind of hear that that is now, you know, fully playing itself out with him, being fully healthy is really good to hear as well. You know, him kind of being that pretty unique disruptor in that room and, and able to take things to the next level. So that's kind of where things start for me. And I would say beyond that, you know, to me, for the most part, you know, I look across the team and even trying to be objective, I feel like each room has been upgraded from the prior year. And so, you know, I know there's

hey, Marcus, you think every room has been really for.

[D]

For me, I do. You know, I know. I know there is concern about the safety position. Right. And. And I certainly can understand it. And. And I wouldn't push back on anybody that has concerns around that. I think for me, it's just still so early in camp. I've been impressed by the bodies that are in that room as well as, I think the coaching that they're going to get. I think, folks, also, you know, I know we don't ever want to oversell on the impact of analysts, but I don't want to undersell either that Mark Stoops is part of this staff and he specializes in, you know, defensive backs and secondary. And so that's. That's been a strength of a lot of teams that he's been on, even when, you know, they were playing against teams that were much more talented. So when I look at, you know, that plus must champ, which Blake, Gideon, Mark Orfe, like, I feel like there's a good synergy there between those guys and similar philosophies. And so I. I don't know, maybe it's me having some blind faith that they'll figure it out and I certainly could be wrong. But, you know, I just. I don't know, I feel really good about, you know, the overall talent. I guess top to bottom from the team, still got to put it together, but I. I feel pretty good about where they are as. As they head into this second, you know, full week of practice.

I think the thing that excites me, Marcus, about D line as much as the talent and depth of talent is versatility. Like we hear that hero Canoe still playing some big end, big edge, right? Justice Terry still playing some big edge. You have your guys obviously can move inside, but I think Justice Terry, if he continues on the path, right? And full pads come on today, this week. So continues on that path. There is room for that disruptor, right? Who can be a disruptor consistently? Because I think the one thing that is known is Jafar is going to be really good over the ball. Texas has really good run defenders. Murad Watson has some, I think some disruptive ability. Alex January, they have guys who are going to play the run well. I think there's still who can be a true disruptor and some bring some consistency in disruption over the course of the season. I think if they add that piece to it, Bobby Blake and Marcus, this D line can compete with anybody. But I do think they got to add that piece to the interior.

Yeah, I think that's fair. Absolutely.

Yeah, I do, too. Hey, Marcus, One of the things that I was going at when you mentioned the positions, it was safety, and, and they don't. I didn't feel, look, they tried to get someone in the, in the portal at safety, and it didn't work out, you know, so it wasn't like they were immune to the idea of. Of doing something there. The other position that I look at and say, is it better this year? Is linebacker. And that is even with the addition of Rasheen Biles, who I think is. I mean, look, we just, We've heard he's doing really, really well. You mentioned Justice Terry as a disruptor. Rasheen Biles is a disruptor as well. Different type. But what I was going to say is Texas lost not just Anthony Hill, they lost Trey Moore. I mean, Trey Moore played a lot of snaps. Now, granted, he played mostly linebacker the second year, not the first year, but I, I feel like the depth at linebacker right now is a little thin. Even with, you know, Ty Anthony Smith back and Rashin Biles and Justice Crier and Brad Spence. I. That's. That back half of the defense is not as. I, I don't want to say not as experienced, but there, it's just so different.

A year ago with Tap back at safety and Manny Muhammad at corner, you had two really high IQ defensive backs. In my desperate, really high new defensive backs. Now, who's the high IQ defensive backfield? Who is that? We got. We got to figure that out once they start playing. And then at linebacker, it's Anthony Hill and Trey Moore. Both physical guys, by the way, like Trey Moore. Very physical, smart. Talk about a high IQ football player. He's a high IQ football player. That maximized. Those are the two spots that I'm. I'm kind of looking at saying, okay, how does it all mesh together?

[D]

Yeah. When I think about linebacker, you know, you're not wrong. It's hard to replace an Anthony Hill and even a Trey Moore. That being said, I'm not of the camp from the games that I watched a lot of times that they were being used to put them in the best situation, to allow them to play to the best of their ability in that defense. Right. So for whatever you potentially lose in talent or frame and. And you're now kind of dropping down to, in some instances, kind of these smaller, more undersized guys, at least, you know, when you're talking about Rasheem and Ty Anthony, I think they're going to. I have more confidence going into this season that I'll see them used appropriately, I'll see them used in a way that makes sense and allow them to be the best version of themselves. So then when you combine that with having a thumper like Juice Cryer that can kind of, you know, navigate some more run heavy teams and even, even Brad Spence, you know, I know we've talked about, certainly he'll be used quite a bit off the edge, I imagine. But that cat's £249 from the sheet that they passed out to us last week. So he's, he's even heavier than, than Cryer. And so to me, you know, even when you look at him, he's a guy that, he plays the game, you know, trying to, to approach his opponent with bad intention. So I, I think they have guys that they can mix and match for the right scheme and moments and I, I have more confidence that they'll be deployed in a way that makes more sense and allows them to be more effective.

Did you think? So what you're saying is PK's defense didn't necessarily lend itself to what Anthony Hill.

Correct.

Did, in your opinion, did best or Trey Moore did best.

[D]

Just turn him loose. Right. You still had some big guys in front of him last year, but it almost seemed like, you know, he was being coached to like catch and hold point at times. And every now and then just his talent took over. And so again, this is not me trying to bash pk. It's different styles of, you know, how coaches decide to, to, you know, deploy their, the weapons at their disposal. I just think that those guys could have been deployed a little bit better last year.

And this group you think fits what MUS champ does?

[D]

Yeah, it's, I mean, you think about everything we talk about is him being much more attacking now, sure, that may lead to giving up some big plays, but I think the trade off for what it'll end up being to me is worth it. Right. I, I, I think, you know, a guy that has an attacking style of defense. I was listening to something maybe on Sirius XM the other day where someone was trying to say that like, you know, a guy like Biles, you know, defensive or offenses are going to try to take advantage of, you know, his aggressive style. He's been playing the position for a minute, guys. Like, it's not like when he got to Texas, this is when he first faced offensive coordinators that knew he was, you know, a game, you know, changing type of player. Like. So I think some of these things, you know, when we get to when we get early in football season, it's exciting. But then I also, also, also remind myself, okay, people are going to try and, like, pull it every single little bitty thread to come up with what they think fits, you know, a potential narrative. And I, I'm always one more to just let it play out a little bit more. And I just. Yeah, to. To what you're asking, Bobby. I just think that, you know, aggressive and a more aggressive defensive play caller, I think, plays to the strengths of all these guys a lot better.

Hey, Marcus, full pads come on this week as players, how excited were y' all for those first full pad days versus the helmet pad shorts days in the heat, man?

[D]

Well, especially the first ones because, you know, you're not fully beat down just yet, you know, and you're just excited that, you know, you get to go hit someone. You know, we talk all the time about, you know, how it is a great sign if a guy is, you know, once he's committed or once you get a chance to talk to a guy in depth and ask him, you know, why is it that you like playing football? It's because you can hit people and, and not get in trouble. So it truly is Christmas, you know, for those guys when they finally get to get some pads popping and, you know, take folks to the ground and the whole nine. So, yeah, man, I just remember it being, you know, one of the best times of the year. Now, the flip side of that is give it two weeks and they're going to be ready to fight each other, right? Because you're tired of hitting each other. You're tired of the fact that, you know, you have to let the offense keep going when you thought a guy should have been down or, you know, you get called down for something situational and you felt like you could have kept running. So they'll get on their NER each other's nerves pretty quick, but then that'll kind of speed up the clock to Texas State.

[A]

Marcus, we. We've got three weeks now essentially until football season. 26 days. A little bit more than three weeks. I guess. The, the thought process and one of the things I was talking about in my morning article over on Texas Football.com is, you know, this is a lengthy time that we're going through right now. It's not everybody. Every position is decided. Some positions are truly arch. Veining is your starting quarterback, right? Colin Simmons is your starting defensive end. Jelani McDonald is starting in the secondary. Trevor Goosby is starting there. There are of the 22 starting positions, probably 19, are kind of decided. Is that a fair way to put it?

[D]

Yeah. Yeah.

[A]

All right, so the ones that are fighting left guard, for example, the second safety spot, what. What is that like? Have you ever been around a position that was. I don't want to say it was a free for all or it is a free for all.

[D]

Yeah.

[A]

But is everybody else on the team watching those spots, too? You know what I mean? Like, are you, if you know what I mean, Are they like, oh, who's winning? Left guard, who looked good today? Is it, is it a talk amongst the team, or is it literally just within that room that they're going, Going through that?

[D]

I. I would say it's within the room and within themselves, man. Because if you're worried too much about some other position, then in some respect, you're not fully attentive to what your job at hand is. These guys are so focused on, you know, making sure or should be, you know, so focused on making sure that they're doing their job right. You don't really have a whole lot of time to worry about, you know, somebody else, you know, winning a particular battle. Now, you certainly will notice, you know, if people begin to separate, you know, if there are things that become, you know, traits and things that are, you know, more dependable. Right. So if a guy is out there, you know, finishing plays off and not messing up assignments, you know, and. And is able to have a good understanding of, you know, what defensive fronts, you know, they're seeing and that kind of thing. As you're talking about the left guard position, that'll begin to stand out because your teammates will know that they can rely on you in a particular way. But, you know, is anybody going back to the locker room necessarily and talking through, like, all right, this guy was ahead today and this guy was the next day. Nah, not so much now. If, if you, you know, plant a defender on their back or you do something that maybe, you know, makes a guy look up or, you know, really pops out on film. Sure. But outside of that, man, these guys should be so locked in on making sure that, you know, they know everything up and down about their position. I doubt they have a ton of time to, to really weigh in on the day to day of it.

I just, I just had this vision, right, of going back and saying, oh, Tyrone Swoops look good at quarterback today. Oh, Shane Buchel looked better at quarterback, or Chris Sims, Major Applewhite, you know, those kind of, as you're going through it, quarterback is A different position. Right, because everybody sees it on every single play. But did you ever go through anything like that yourself or see anybody trying to think?

[D]

I mean, most of the time, you know, like, a lot of our squads had really talented upperclassmen, and then they just had, you know, even more talent beneath it that was just kind of growing into it. So more times than not, you know, it was an elder statesman that was already kind of holding down the fort in the position, and then maybe you just had, you know, the young guys chomping at the bit. I think what. What this talent base kind of reminds me of from my time, though, is that that young talent was definitely always chomping at the bit and ready to go in the event they were ever called upon, in the event that, you know, opportunity presented itself. And then that becomes the other thing is you have to make the best of your opportunity. I. I backed up Derek Johnson for two and a half years. He never got hurt. Like, you know, so if we're blowing somebody out, sure, I got some reps on defense at that point, but beyond that, all of my reps were on special teams. So, you know, for me, it was all right, make sure I know everything that, you know, DJ would know front and back. But then at the same time, like, I better not be a guy that's messing something up on special teams and giving up any kind of leaky yardage or anything like that. So you really, you know, kind of have to compartmentalize a bit. And it's almost like the. What is it. Is it. Is it Belichick or whoever it was that says, you know, just do your job right? Like that? That really is kind of a. It needs to be an internal mantra for any player, but you always need to be ready. And I do think that they have kind of that elite depth. So for the guys that are in a bit of those fights or in, you know, rooms that maybe have some folks more established, you still always have to be ready because you're, you know, only one play away.

Hey, Marcus, somebody brought up this. Tom Bailey, 6586, Littleton has to be a high IQ to start as a freshman. And the reason I brought that up, absolutely, I think that's 100 true, but I think we're. And we're not saying Cosi Paul is going to start, but I think we're hearing some things, like he's a high Q guy. He's playing off ball and overhang linebacker and doing very well, getting tons of two reps. He's Obviously going to play the shirt. Was there a guy that you came in with that just had a really high football iq, right, that maybe he wasn't as athletic as somebody else? Now, Kosiopol is very athletic. Grayson Littleton is. But was there somebody you came in with that just had such a. Or that was on that 05 team that may have just had the best football IQ?

[D]

A. Harris was like that. I mean, he just had a nose for the ball. You know, he. I, I was more of what. I mean, he used to tell me all the time, he's like, man, like, if I had your size, like, I'd be out of here, right? But it just. He had a nose for the ball. I think a lot of that came from the district that he played in. You know, they just, it was a really tough district, you know, where he was at North Mesquite. And so he was facing high level competition, but he, he, he had a good nose for the ball, really good leverage. You know, a guy a little younger than me that kind of fit the similar mold was Bobano, you know, just really, really good knack for the ball. And then just kind of. Overall, I would say Michael Griffin probably was one of the smarter players that I ever played with. He knew where everybody needed to be on the field and, and also knew kind of his limitations. If you even think about his interception in the national championship game, you know, he, he covered a lot of ground, but he knew, you know, had tested things out and practiced enough and studied film like crazy to know that he could make that ground up. So those are the type of guys that are able to kind of combine their athletic ability with, you know, studying the game. And it just helps you play faster if you're having to think through, certainly slows you down. And so that's why it was so impressive to see someone like Grayson Littleton not only take to it so soon, but then, you know, be able to jump right into the frying pan out game one on the road against, you know, the best wide receiver in the country. So, you know that that's rare. And so you, you certainly look for guys to take that next step. And then it's awesome to have somebody like that in the room and because then they can help, you know, the next crop come along and they're kind of proof of concept, right? It's not how you, you don't have to wait to be able to make an impact. It just, you know, depends on how much, you know, work you put in. And when you're given the opportunity to seize it.

We got to mention this actually, Jerry, after we get through this point about Cohen Brown and some things he did this weekend. But Jermaine Bishop is really fast. But the thing that is different with him that his is his X factor. Well, he may have a couple actually. One is his football. Know how that may be an X factor for him, but his smoothness, like silky smooth. All effort, all movement. Effortless and economical. I don't know how else to say it than that. Like. And he accelerates different. Just because someone's fast doesn't mean they're necessarily accelerate, you know, fast. Right. I, I think that, I do think that he's among the fastest but not maybe the top three that, that, that Ryan Niblett mentioned.

Yeah, I agree. I think he's. It'll be interesting at an NFL combine one day. These, obviously these guys train for it and they put up their best times. But I, I think he is just. He has game speed is what he has. Like when the lights are on, it's time to go roll. I just, I think he goes to another level.

He's separate. He's. He's able to separate Jerry because he's so. I mean he, he just. It's. I don't know how when. Let's talk about Cohen Brown real quick because that's. That deserve a comment. So on Saturday night, this is what I was told from a couple of folks. Cohen Brown had a really good last half or last part of the scrimmage. It wasn't really a scrimmage of teamwork. About 30, 40 plays they put the threes versus the threes. And Cohen Brown ran about three or four deep balls and caught a couple of them. And his speed was extraordinarily evident during those plays. I was told that it wouldn't be surprising if they don't try to find a way to get him some run even as a freshman because of that speed. Now the, the thing that. And I was talking to Jordan Scruggs about this yesterday. The thing about. We have to remember about. About Cohen is he had some problems catching the ball in the spring. He didn't have great hands. To hear that he's making some downfield catches. Jerry is a real positive. Correct. That's a sign that things may be booming in the right direction for him. So good for Cohen for having a good, good practice.

Yeah, I think he is. I think he's a little deceptive to players when they first see him that. Because he was built like a third down running back.

And so when he. I'm. I think people underestimate his speed probably until he's over the top, then they don't underestimate anymore. So I think that's probably what happens with him a lot. And there are other players like him, obviously, but I, I think he has. I think he's deceptive because when he goes and lines up at wideout, you look at him, you're okay. This guy's five eleven and a half, 195. And he's all muscle bound and you're like. And then he just races right by you. And I think, I think he's got that. He's deceptive the first time you go against him. Yeah.

What was the beef with Texas and DeSoto back in the day, saw the Von Miller interview about him wanting to go to Texas. I, I could easily be wrong on this. From what I remember going to DeSoto during those years, Texas just didn't offer him or Cyrus Gray out of high school. And they both. Yeah, but Miller and Gray ended up going A and M out of that same class. I believe it was. Texas did not offer either one of those guys. So. And that was at a time where obviously Texas, a year removed from winning a national championship and 95 of the kids in the state, unless they had ties to other schools, were gonna want to go to Texas.

Nathaniel Lopez, was Texas ever in on Miles Garrett? I was pretty close to that when that was the ESPN Under Armour days. Miles Garrett sister went to A M. That he was going to A M unless he went to Alabama. I will say this too. I'll give Nick Saban ultimate credit on this. He was saying that was the number one prospect in America before anybody had him rate in the top 100 and 200 in America. I remember I heard that specifically. And they were like, hey, Nick Saban thinks this kid in dfw, what's the school, Arlington Martin or something's the best prospect in America.

Pat Sutus was the Texas recruiting coordinator slash personnel manager at that time. And he would always. He referenced like different players around the state that they really loved or whatever, you know, that kind of thing. And he said, oh, but he's number two behind that super freak at Arlington Martin.

It was always be. Miles Garrett was well known by the Texas staff and it just did not have a chance. No out of the gate wanted him in the worst way possible.

Appreciate you, Sailor Joe. I think that this is almost always accurate unless Colt McCoy was your quarterback. Yeah, like I really can't remember a time, Jerry, where the offense at Texas, even during Vince, you would hear more about the defense early in camp. The only time I remember the offense like, oh, they're really killing it right now was with Colt McCoy because, and I'll say this, I mean, I mentioned it earlier, Colt McCoy was the most accurate passer I've ever seen at Texas, period. And they would just move the ball down the field with little five yard hitches and you know, bubble screens. They just, he was just dynamite at it. And I would say, Sailor Joe, the issue there for me is I'm not sure in my 30 plus years of covering Texas I've ever said that the offense early on was ahead of the defense other than when Colt McCoy was there. So to your point, your prediction I think is rooted in fact and proven over time. And I, I think the defense almost always comes out hotter than an offense in camp and that is one of the reasons why you hear about it. But I will say this. I mean there have been offense plays, there have been offensive offensive plays that

have been

pretty good too. I mean they, they are working right now on some, from what I've been told, some really deep routes like let the play develop kind of stuff maybe. And that obviously portends to more disruption time for the defense. Right. It gives Justice Terry more time to get there if you're trying to run a 25 yard route and focus on getting the ball out. So I, I think that we'll see over time what that means. But I agree with you. Defense is ahead of the offense and that's almost always the case. Hey Bobby, we've had a lot of

We're going to look at a couple of those today. We'll look at a few more tomorrow. But I want to start here with Arch Manning. They talked to two different SEC defensive coordinators. The first one said he's handled this situation better than anybody could possibly do. The expectations aren't fair. So personally I hope he has a great year. Hopefully he has an off game against us. The second defensive coordinator from the SEC said he can absolutely rip it like velocity, accuracy. He got a little bit out of whack and made some mistakes and then people were really Defending him. It's going to be really easy this year because people are going to have to double Cam Coleman. He's a real one and so is Window. So it's like you can't double both of them. We'll start with Arch. Your thoughts?

I, that, that first comment, I mean, I, I've, I've said before, I think just one opinion is the most impressive thing I saw for March last year was response to true, real adversity on a football field. And I, I just, I'm interested to see in 10, 12, 15 years, whenever that time comes, how he talks about those first few starts last year and how that really impacted him and ended up taking him to another level as a player. I, I just thought that was so impressive last year because, you know, there's some, I think Sark even said that would, that would have. A lot of people would have wilted under that pressure and how the season started. But that intestinal fortitude, because, you know, he had some really tough nights, you know, I mean, it's just natural right after a UTEP game. You know, that was a tough spot to be for him, but I thought that's going to end up being. Defining him as, as a player as his career moves along. And he's got a lot of, he's got a lot of weapons around them this year, whether it be wide receiver, tight end, running back, and like that second DC said that you, you can double one. And so he's going to have some unbelievable opportunities this year at Texas. But I think just the way he handled last year, the first few starts, was the most impressive thing I saw out of him.

Aren't they just going to play zone against Texas? I would, I. Yeah, there you go. Georgia is just going to try to keep, not that they play Georgia, but they're just going to try to keep everything in front of them. Right. That's, that's the reality.

You know what Jim Knowles is going to do in Knoxville.

Yeah, that's right.

You know, that one's pretty easy.

Yeah. Former Oklahoma State, Ohio State defense coordinator, Penn State defense corner kind of helped push that three safety look on the rest of the nation. Yeah, that. I, I think that's what's going to happen. And so you're gonna have to prove you can run the ball a little bit and, or get some guys on the perimeter and make them miss. You do that and then it's a different animal. But I, look, I appreciate what the coaches said about Arch because it's ultimately true, Jerry. I mean, he did have a tough and start to the season as well as expectations that were out of whack, you know, and all he did was overcome them. I think that anybody making him perfect this year, you know, as we talked about at the outset with a wobbly ball and all of a sudden he's oh, he's inaccurate. You know, it's the same thing. Don't have these expectations like the young man's perfect. Like he walks on water. He does not. He's a really good quarterback though, as you can tell by these two coaches that are talking about him. But he's not perfect. No one is. So let's, let's let this play out. But I think Texas is in great shot, great shape with Arch Manning. They're just going to see so many different looks I think this year to try to deal with him.

Well, let's, let's look at Reed because the comments aren't as glowing. The first SEC defensive coordinator says the people that have been able to stop the run and play zone defense, he's had a hard time against second SEC defensive coordinator. He still thinks he's a true quarterback and we want him to like keep thinking that way. He doesn't really want to run, but when he does, it's the scariest part.

Yeah. And the thing about the number two is he's still a slight of frame. Built like a wide receiver. Body like he's not like. If you're talking about Camario Taylor, well, you might not want him to run, you know, I mean or you would run him more if you're a M. But if you're A M, how much, how many hits do you want Marcel Reed to take? I mean that's to, to me as a big question about kind of how they plan Marcel Reed game plan. Marcel Reed is how much do you really. How many shots do you want in the taking? I know he's an elusive guy, but you're still going to take hits. And that's the thing. When you see him in Bobby, you saw him at SEC media days. He's 180 pounds, 182 maybe. We saw him at Manning passing Academy, CJ and I. He's just the frame is still built like a wider a slot wide receiver or he's built like Grayson Littleton.

Oh, he's not built as well as Grayson Littleton.

Probably not as muscle but similar, similar height, weight.

[A]

I mean so it's like more like built like John Meredith. I mean I personally Jer or Kik Locket like body type. I Think Kik Lockett is the closest on the Texas team to Marcel Reed. Now Marcel Reed's also a little bit older, so he's added some weight to that. I, I, I would just say this, that first comment may be why PK has had A M's number. Texas plays A M late in the year, so he's already gone through, gotten some hits taken. Right. So he needs to, you know, preserve his body a little bit. And PK love to play zone against him and keep everything in, in front of him so that when he did, you know, take it down and run, he wasn't getting a 40 yard run. It was, you know, five to ten. So I, I'm, I, I think nothing about those statements on Marcel Reed are, are shocking to me. I think that, I think they've got a good read on Reed, I guess is the best way to put it.

All right. And then finally they will wrap up with John Matier here. An SEC defensive coordinator said his Washington State tape was way better than how he played last year. But he's a really good quarterback. You've got to do a good job against him. And then a defensive coordinator who's actually going to face OU this season says Matier is a good player. He's athletic, there's some balls he throws very well and others that I think he's just okay at. I don't know that he always reads it the best, but that offense is suited well for him and they got a lot out of him. There were some games he looked outstanding last year and others where he looked just okay.

Here my take on material is a little bit different than what that defense coordinator said the second one. It wasn't just games that he looked okay and then other games he didn't. There were games within which he looked good and then reverted. It was, in other words, there was some inconsistency in game. Like he wasn't hot in one game and cold in the next. He could be hot for two quarters and then blow it in the fourth or be really average in the first two or three quarters and then be pretty good on the road at, at Alabama in the regular season in the fourth. And so I, I think that the issue with him, it's okay. I was taking my hat off. I think that the, the thought process for me on that is that, that he's just, he deals with inconsistency issues and I want to see if I'm an OU fan, I want to see a four quarter game from him. It's not so much Game to game as it is the inconsistency within games that that can be problematic especially if he starts throwing it to the other team. Jerry, that that's the issue with him.

Yeah, I'm one of the things I'm. I'm interested. Of those three guys that were brought up, who makes the biggest jump this year? That's might tell you a lot about their team. Which of these guys makes the biggest job? Reed has the most starting experience experience in the sec obviously. I think he's the third, easily the third best quarterback of this group. Who makes the biggest jump of those three guys? I mean Archer, year two starting material, year two in the SEC starting obviously third year starting overall. But I think the SEC thing's going to matter there. Which of those guys makes the biggest jump for their team this year? I think it's gonna be. Oh with Oklahoma, I think it comes down to running game to help Matiere out a lot so he doesn't have to get into the total gunslinger mode that he does sometimes. Can they run the football? Because that's what Brent venable said at SEC Media's First Thing. We want to run for 175 yards a game this year. They get that done. Mater is going to probably look like a much different quarterback this year because he won't feel like he has to go make all the plays all the time. I think that's something big to watch there with him is can they run the football to support.

But which of those guys is going to make the biggest jump this season? It's going to be interesting to watch.

or maybe the he was sweaty and the ball. Look, I think that people over over have. Have over analyzed that play from the throw perspective and not given enough credit actually to the superhuman catch that Cam Coleman made. That's my, my take on it. But maybe, maybe again though that's just the crazies in us. You know, the, the most fans would just see that catch and go holy cow, what a catch catch. But the crazies, the people that are on, on Texas football or you know, on the message board, whatever, we're all like looking for other subtle hints about how the, how the world is going right now in Longhorn land. Must Champ met with the media. Kyle Flood, all of the assistant coaches actually did on a single day. We got to sit down with like eight different coaches given that they didn't do that this year in the preseason. So I kind of wonder if we're not now. We'll see Steve Sarkeesian later today. They're at practice right now. We're supposed to get him in about an hour. We'll have a report from what Sark says later today almost immediately following. But my point being maybe next week we get the coordinators or maybe not at all. They haven't told us yet. Justin, as far as time is close on. On Friday nights, how about mornings? Jerry, you were telling me you were trying to get over to see somebody practice.

So this morning they act. So we started Midnight Madness Friday night at midnight. But going into this week of school, he started at 6:00' clock this morning. But going forward they will be out there at 5:35 every morning. Which means he will be at the high school at 5.

I'm hearing a lot of schools in that 5:30 range starting practice in Texas all. All season. Not just in before school like all season. And Longhorn frenzy. That's right. Georgia high school football gets going early. They had their first scrimmages last Friday because a lot of people saw Marshall Manning his first, his debut at the private school there in Chattanooga against who was it? Was it Buford they went against or Grayson? I think it was Buford. Corky Kell is Wednesday night. That's a big deal in the state of Georgia. There's some great matchups. I've been to that a couple times over the year. There's some, there's some great matchups at Corky Kell every year in, in Atlanta. So high school football gets going not in Texas, but in a lot of states this weekend and then next weekend State of Florida plays a bunch of their showcase games the following weekend.

Oh man. All right. Well, at the beginning of the show, fellas, I mentioned we are 26 days away from kickoff. So let's see. Take a look at a trio of 26s. Obviously there's been many more, but these are three that stood out for me today. First one being Johnny Lamb Jones, Olympic gold medalist, two time All American. Then you got DJ Monroe, special teams guy for sure. Kickoff returns. I think he still holds the school record if I remember correctly. And then safety Marcus Griffin as well. All notable, number 26, Texas.

Number 27 was pretty good. Marcus's brother Michael. Johnny Johnson, former Longhorn, had a couple sons that played at Texas as well. But Johnny Lamb Jones, I, I still think he's the only Olympic medalist before he ever enrolled at Texas. Oh wow. In Montreal in 1976, like before he ever got to Texas, he was an Olympic gold medalist. That's fast guys. That's what that is. And that tells you what kind of speed that, that he has. DJ Monroe had speed himself. Jerry, one of those guys from down at Angleton that did it. Lamb. By the way, for people that don't know the the history, Lamb is short for Lamb passes, which is where Johnny Jones is from. They also had a guy named Johnny Ham Jones back in the day that was a running back. He was from Hamlin, Texas. So. And then we have Obviously our number 26 on the current team, linebacker Ty Anthony Smith. Yeah. Right now who we've been reporting, Jerry is really fighting for the starting job most likely or at least right now with Justice Justin Crier, uh, the young man that's uh, transfer from Florida State by way of Brookshire Royal High School down off of I10 just west of Katy. But long story short, those two going at it right now, as of right now, Crier started running with the ones back in the spring because Ty Anthony was out. Right. And so Crier actually has more experience with Will Muschamp than Ty Anthony Smith does on field. If you just think even though Tyenthi's been with Texas longer, must check coming in kind of reset the room. Right. And so that's, that's a battle right now. Crier has been starting early in camp. Doesn't mean he's going to stay starting.

Yeah, they're all going to play a lot. I think Crier is that he's. He brings that a gap thumper. Right. And that is important in must champ scheme because you know you're going to move. Biles is going to play all over the place. Right. I think Justin Cryer that run support that, that a gap b gap guy is very important in Will Muschamp scheme. All those guys are going to play a lot. The question is Bobby, here's a question. How much will you see? And you're going to see it quite a bit. How much will it's going to be matchup dependent more than likely. But how much do you see Biles and Ty Anthony Smith at the same time? Because you. That's two guys. And I look I'm one of those people that thinks the size of a linebacker is a little overrated right now. Doesn't mean I'm right just an opinion but Biles and ty Anthony Smith 2 sub 220 pound guys so that is crier being a 240 pound a gap thumper against the run. Is he a really good mix with Biles who is arguably as good a player him and Colin Simmers the two best players you have on defense.
