Practice number one, get started today. This is this week's State of the Program. I'm Bobby Burton, he's Jerry Hamilton, brought to you by our friends Adam Lowy over at the Lowy law firm. Jerry, I felt like as a precursor to our practice coverage later today, I wanted to talk about a few things that we're really looking forward to seeing out of this first practice. We've got the whole group of on Texas football gang that's going to be there. We're going to be reporting on it heavily. But what are a couple of the key things we're really looking for? I'm going to go to you first and you tell me one of the things you're going to try to diagnose, so to speak.

Yeah, a big one for me is the secondary who comes out with the ones at each position and then who's with the twos at each position. The reason I bring that up is of all the positions at Texas, we have reported on the most summer off season movement in the secondary, whether that it's Kobe Black. We broke the news that Kobe Black was working more with safety than corner in the summer. We also broke the news that Xavier Filsamy was working at more nickel than safety late in the summer. Obviously you had Jermaine Bishop working at corner, but he's going back to receiver. Steve Sarkeesian even said that. But how does that secondary look? Because I think that's going to tell us a lot about where Will Muschamp, Blake, Gideon and Mark or phase minds are at after watching spring ball and then watching summer workouts and where they think some of these pieces are going to fit. Do we see Xavier Filome exclusively nickel the next couple days and is he ahead of Wardell Mack? To be determined. We don't know yet. Is Kobe Black going to work exclusively at safety? He's the best man coverage guy at safety or does he work at both corner and safety? That will be very telling about where Will Muschamp's head is at mind is at with this defensive secondary going in the fall camp. Because if, if Kobe Black works at safety Morgan corner, then you know, you know that it's going to be Kate Phillips and Warren Roberson comedy competing for that starting corner job with Cade Phillips having the edge there. So I think it's going to be. And where does Jonah Williams work and how quickly do they mix him in in the next couple days? I think it's going to be really fun to watch because I do think that's the position that has the most questions to be answered headed in the fall camp.

Certainly does on defense have the most. I would broaden your answer though. I would. And what I mean by that is it's not just the secondary that we're going to be looking at. It's going to be the ones and twos across the board, offense, defense, every position. Every position. I mean offensive line, what's you know, whether it's Lawrence Seymour or is it going to be Jaden Chapman or even Dylan Sikorski going out with number ones. We don't think Cole Hudson is going to practice today because of the the injunction still. But my point being it's going to be across every position. Tight end Spencer Shannon finished the spring ahead of Michael Massunis. Well, did he stay ahead of him all spring? We don't know that quite yet. Then you have the backup wide receivers after the first three. Cam Coleman, EMT Mosley as well as Ryan Wingo, has Jermaine Bishop really made that kind of push where he's a full time second teamer or is is Jalen McCutcheon still the inside slot in that second group?

My point being even in offensive line, multiple positions, defensive front, multiple positions, you could say the same thing. I just think that it's going to be the ones and twos and kind of the pecking order, I guess of the entire team. You picked out the secondary because to your point, it has the most moving parts right now.

Yeah.

So I, I think really fair my mine Jerry, that, that I really wanted to discuss is I just wanted to see a lot of pep in the step today. When we go out there, I want to see guys fighting to get to the front of the line. I want to see guys hustling from one station to the other. Guys that look like they're in shape and kind of fit to be tied, that they're excited to be back on the football field. I know that is not a hard and fast thing. I can just quantify. But that's what you want if you're a football coach. You want a team in its first practice to look like it's not only ready physically but raring to go. You think you want them like biting to just biting at the chopping at the bit to get going. What, what, what do you think about that? Is that something that you're going to be watching?

Yeah. And maybe you mentioned at various times what shape players are in and, and I would add on to that. The guys who have missed summer workouts, the guys who missed the spring due to surgeries, where are they at coming into fall campus? It's going to be hella hot out there today. Not, not very hot. Hella hot. Yeah.

99. 99 with a even great 90 plus humidity. It'll be feel like 106 I said on the radio this morning making it up to 110 feel like that. So you're right. It's going to be hot.

It is some of those names that people have asked us, our great on Texas football communities asked us in the chat about all summer. Justice Terry, right? Where's he at? He missed most of. He missed all spring, missed most of the comeback guys is what you're Williams. The guys coming back from injury, even a young guy like James Johnson. Where is he at? On the men. Those guys, they missed a lot of valuable time. Not just spring football but early some of the football activities. So where are you? And then the new guys, Lawrence Seymour, look, he grew up in very humid Miami. Okay. But he hasn't been in football activities with a team in a while. Yes, he got into Austin this summer, so he's engaged in some of the off season to help get him working back towards football shape. But he's still got. Probably still got a ways to go to feel like he's really in football shape. Where all those guys at? I think it'll be interesting to see in our media window, to be clear.

Yeah. Part of this raring to go or that sort of thing. It also depends on leadership.

Yeah.

And communication. Last year, Texas had Anthony Hill with the Green dot. Right. And then they had Michael Taff and kind of directing traffic in the secondary. Two guys have played a lot of football for the Longhorns. One of them now, both of them in the NFL. The question I had for you, Jerry, as it relates to all of this, is, isn't that kind of leadership communication? Doesn't that. Don't you want to see that get going almost from the outset? You want those guys saying, this is how we do things around here.

Whether it's leading a position group or leading an offense or a defense, with communication, a lot of talk between the secondary or the offensive line, etc.

Jerry Hamilton
Yeah, I think, especially on defense for reasons you mentioned. I think there's more questions to be answered in terms of defensive leadership on this team than offensive leadership on this team. And it's going to give us insight to where Will Muschamp push some of this leadership onto with players as well. That'll give you a really good look, really good feel at where Will Muschamps at with the guys he wants to be to step up and be the leaders of this Texas defense. Obviously, naturally, people are going to talk about Colin Simmons, but it's more than that. I mean, it's more than one player. Is it. Is it a newcomer like Rasheen Biles that, you know, look, may, May maybe looks to step into a leadership role because he's an experienced guy that's a tremendous player, or is it going to be a Jelani McDonald, another guy that's back on the defense? Where does. Where does must Champ go with that? Because I, I think. And where does Sark and must Champ as a combination go with that? I think that'll be very interesting to see where this goes early for Texas and in fall camp, because the reality of it is it's not going to be a corner. It's not going to be Bo Masco, really. Right. We know that it's normally a safety. It's normally that linebacker. And Colin Simmons is a hybrid linebacker edge player. You know, he's going to take on the leadership role. He wants to. We saw him at SEC media days. But who else is going to be there with him? I, I tend to think it's going to be a newcomer to this program or someone like.

You're not. You're not really counting on like a Brad Spence or a Titan has some leadership qualities. Maybe Brad Spence does too. And then in, in the interior, I go back to guys like Byron Murphy who are real leaders by example. Just always giving it 110% in practice. Interesting to see where the leadership comes from beyond just Trevor Goose, beyond the offensive line.

Yeah.

You know which of the interior guys kind of take control? Is that. Is that Connor Robertson? Yeah. All right. A couple of things I want to mention. Last piece and just your idea of this. I want to see a somewhat clean practice. And I'm not talking about clean from a penalty perspective.

Right.

They don't really get into that in day one. I'm talking about Arch Manning, the quarterbacks and the receivers when they're throwing the ball on air against no defenders. I don't want to see an incomplete pass. I don't want to see the ball hit the ground.

Right.

That kind of clean crispness whenever they're working with. With duo blocking over on, on up, up, up above the. The area with Kyle Flood. I want to see guys getting off the ball at the same time in conjunction moving the sled. I want to see that kind of crisp, clean practice because I think if they have that, it'll show you that they've kind of been focused in. It'll give you a sense of what their mental focus and preparation is.

Yeah. And to add to that, clean catches in the return Game. Right. Those things stand out because in our media window a lot of times that's where it starts with punt return. Like nothing gets coaches getting into four letter bombs like drop punts on day one. Right. Snaps, clean snaps, long snaps, trade, trade a buck a new snapper for Texas. Clean in that regard as well. I mean, yeah, I totally agree. I mean that nothing. I. If Sark comes to the mike after the practice, nothing would make him happier as a head coach and saying our guys are ready and we had a clean practice. That is that coaches love to go to the mic with early on in, in fall camp. Yeah.

Because he already knows who's who. His pecking order is. He already know. That's. That's a question for us, not a question for him per se. Yeah, I, I agree. He knows how they look physically and has watched them develop.

They have all the weight room numbers. They have all the summer workouts.

The guys who are cleared look good on day one of practice. We did not. We had a healthy first day of practice and that our pitch and catch, like you mentioned earlier, our quarterback receiver relationship looked really good in day one. I, I think those are the main things healthy. The guys who were cleared look good today. They, no setbacks, nobody injured in practice. And our pitching and catching, which is what day one essentially is when we're going to see, it looked really clean. And I think, I think it's spirited. I, I think I. Even though you're not in full pads, you can still have a spirited practice. You can still have a competitive practice. I think that's what Sarka. I would Love to hear or I

would love to say, I like that term a lot. Spirited. I, I would also say this. You talked a little bit about the, what I called those bounce back play players. Guys lock. It's another one we didn't mention. You know, how does he look now that he's full go again as you look at those guys, I remember last year coming out of that first practice and saying, okay, Cedric Baxter looks like he's on the mend, but he's not 100. That's right. To your point, we want Derrick Williams is kind of a bounce back guy because he even played some last year, but he's still trying to mend the knee a little bit. We want to see 100% or 100, you know, going 100% and it reacting 100% to them, to their previous ability. So I think that's a big piece of it. But spirited practice, I would go with that. That means it's been competitive and they, they had that pep in the step that I was talking about. I think that's, you know, even more important than clean practice at some point. I think clean practice is important, but you got to have energy, man. This is a game. It's supposed to be fun. They should be in the shape of their lives and have fresh legs. Yeah, a big one for me is the secondary who comes out with the ones at each position and then who's with the twos at each position. The reason I bring that up is of all the positions at Texas, we have reported on the most summer off season movement in the secondary, whether that it's Kobe Black. We broke the news that Kobe Black was working more with safety than corner in the summer. We also broke the news that Xavier Filsamy was working at more nickel than safety late in the summer. Obviously you had Jermaine Bishop working at corner, but he's going back to receiver. Steve Sarkeesian even said that. But how does that secondary look? Because I think that's going to tell us a lot about where Will Muschamp, Blake, Gideon and Mark or phase minds are at after watching spring ball and then watching summer workouts and where they think some of these pieces are going to fit. Do we see Xavier Filome exclusively nickel the next couple days and is he ahead of Wardell Mack? To be determined. We don't know yet. Is Kobe Black going to work exclusively at safety? He's the best man coverage guy at safety or does he work at both corner and safety? That will be very telling about where Will Muschamp's head is at mind is at with this defensive secondary going in the fall camp. Because if, if Kobe Black works at safety Morgan corner, then you know, you know that it's going to be Kate Phillips and Warren Roberson comedy competing for that starting corner job with Cade Phillips having the edge there. So I think it's going to be. And where does Jonah Williams work and how quickly do they mix him in in the next couple days? I think it's going to be really fun to watch because I do think that's the position that has the most questions to be answered headed in the fall camp.

Certainly does on defense have the most. I would broaden your answer though. I would. And what I mean by that is it's not just the secondary that we're going to be looking at. It's going to be the ones and twos across the board, offense, defense, every position. Every position. I mean offensive line, what's you know, whether it's Lawrence Seymour or is it going to be Jaden Chapman or even Dylan Sikorski going out with number ones. We don't think Cole Hudson is going to practice today because of the the injunction still. But my point being it's going to be across every position. Tight end Spencer Shannon finished the spring ahead of Michael Massunis. Well, did he stay ahead of him all spring? We don't know that quite yet. Then you have the backup wide receivers after the first three. Cam Coleman, EMT Mosley as well as Ryan Wingo, has Jermaine Bishop really made that kind of push where he's a full time second teamer or is is Jalen McCutcheon still the inside slot in that second group?

My point being even in offensive line, multiple positions, defensive front, multiple positions, you could say the same thing. I just think that it's going to be the ones and twos and kind of the pecking order, I guess of the entire team. You picked out the secondary because to your point, it has the most moving parts right now.

Yeah.

So I, I think really fair my mine Jerry, that, that I really wanted to discuss is I just wanted to see a lot of pep in the step today. When we go out there, I want to see guys fighting to get to the front of the line. I want to see guys hustling from one station to the other. Guys that look like they're in shape and kind of fit to be tied, that they're excited to be back on the football field. I know that is not a hard and fast thing. I can just quantify. But that's what you want if you're a football coach. You want a team in its first practice to look like it's not only ready physically but raring to go. You think you want them like biting to just biting at the chopping at the bit to get going. What, what, what do you think about that? Is that something that you're going to be watching?

Yeah. And maybe you mentioned at various times what shape players are in and, and I would add on to that. The guys who have missed summer workouts, the guys who missed the spring due to surgeries, where are they at coming into fall campus? It's going to be hella hot out there today. Not, not very hot. Hella hot. Yeah.

99. 99 with a even great 90 plus humidity. It'll be feel like 106 I said on the radio this morning making it up to 110 feel like that. So you're right. It's going to be hot.

It is some of those names that people have asked us, our great on Texas football communities asked us in the chat about all summer. Justice Terry, right? Where's he at? He missed most of. He missed all spring, missed most of the comeback guys is what you're Williams. The guys coming back from injury, even a young guy like James Johnson. Where is he at? On the men. Those guys, they missed a lot of valuable time. Not just spring football but early some of the football activities. So where are you? And then the new guys, Lawrence Seymour, look, he grew up in very humid Miami. Okay. But he hasn't been in football activities with a team in a while. Yes, he got into Austin this summer, so he's engaged in some of the off season to help get him working back towards football shape. But he's still got. Probably still got a ways to go to feel like he's really in football shape. Where all those guys at? I think it'll be interesting to see in our media window, to be clear.

Yeah. Part of this raring to go or that sort of thing. It also depends on leadership.

Yeah.

And communication. Last year, Texas had Anthony Hill with the Green dot. Right. And then they had Michael Taff and kind of directing traffic in the secondary. Two guys have played a lot of football for the Longhorns. One of them now, both of them in the NFL. The question I had for you, Jerry, as it relates to all of this, is, isn't that kind of leadership communication? Doesn't that. Don't you want to see that get going almost from the outset? You want those guys saying, this is how we do things around here.

Whether it's leading a position group or leading an offense or a defense, with communication, a lot of talk between the secondary or the offensive line, etc.

Yeah, I think, especially on defense for reasons you mentioned. I think there's more questions to be answered in terms of defensive leadership on this team than offensive leadership on this team. And it's going to give us insight to where Will Muschamp push some of this leadership onto with players as well. That'll give you a really good look, really good feel at where Will Muschamps at with the guys he wants to be to step up and be the leaders of this Texas defense. Obviously, naturally, people are going to talk about Colin Simmons, but it's more than that. I mean, it's more than one player. Is it. Is it a newcomer like Rasheen Biles that, you know, look, may, May maybe looks to step into a leadership role because he's an experienced guy that's a tremendous player, or is it going to be a Jelani McDonald, another guy that's back on the defense? Where does. Where does must Champ go with that? Because I, I think. And where does Sark and must Champ as a combination go with that? I think that'll be very interesting to see where this goes early for Texas and in fall camp, because the reality of it is it's not going to be a corner. It's not going to be Bo Masco, really. Right. We know that it's normally a safety. It's normally that linebacker. And Colin Simmons is a hybrid linebacker edge player. You know, he's going to take on the leadership role. He wants to. We saw him at SEC media days. But who else is going to be there with him? I, I tend to think it's going to be a newcomer to this program or someone like.

You're not. You're not really counting on like a Brad Spence or a Titan has some leadership qualities. Maybe Brad Spence does too. And then in, in the interior, I go back to guys like Byron Murphy who are real leaders by example. Just always giving it 110% in practice. Interesting to see where the leadership comes from beyond just Trevor Goose, beyond the offensive line.

Yeah.

You know which of the interior guys kind of take control? Is that. Is that Connor Robertson? Yeah. All right. A couple of things I want to mention. Last piece and just your idea of this. I want to see a somewhat clean practice. And I'm not talking about clean from a penalty perspective.

Right.

They don't really get into that in day one. I'm talking about Arch Manning, the quarterbacks and the receivers when they're throwing the ball on air against no defenders. I don't want to see an incomplete pass. I don't want to see the ball hit the ground.

Right.

That kind of clean crispness whenever they're working with. With duo blocking over on, on up, up, up above the. The area with Kyle Flood. I want to see guys getting off the ball at the same time in conjunction moving the sled. I want to see that kind of crisp, clean practice because I think if they have that, it'll show you that they've kind of been focused in. It'll give you a sense of what their mental focus and preparation is.

Yeah. And to add to that, clean catches in the return Game. Right. Those things stand out because in our media window a lot of times that's where it starts with punt return. Like nothing gets coaches getting into four letter bombs like drop punts on day one. Right. Snaps, clean snaps, long snaps, trade, trade a buck a new snapper for Texas. Clean in that regard as well. I mean, yeah, I totally agree. I mean that nothing. I. If Sark comes to the mike after the practice, nothing would make him happier as a head coach and saying our guys are ready and we had a clean practice. That is that coaches love to go to the mic with early on in, in fall camp. Yeah.

Because he already knows who's who. His pecking order is. He already know. That's. That's a question for us, not a question for him per se. Yeah, I, I agree. He knows how they look physically and has watched them develop.

The guys who are cleared look good on day one of practice. We did not. We had a healthy first day of practice and that our pitch and catch, like you mentioned earlier, our quarterback receiver relationship looked really good in day one. I, I think those are the main things healthy. The guys who were cleared look good today. They, no setbacks, nobody injured in practice. And our pitching and catching, which is what day one essentially is when we're going to see, it looked really clean. And I think, I think it's spirited. I, I think I. Even though you're not in full pads, you can still have a spirited practice. You can still have a competitive practice. I think that's what Sarka. I would Love to hear or I

would love to say, I like that term a lot. Spirited. I, I would also say this. You talked a little bit about the, what I called those bounce back play players. Guys lock. It's another one we didn't mention. You know, how does he look now that he's full go again as you look at those guys, I remember last year coming out of that first practice and saying, okay, Cedric Baxter looks like he's on the mend, but he's not 100. That's right. To your point, we want Derrick Williams is kind of a bounce back guy because he even played some last year, but he's still trying to mend the knee a little bit. We want to see 100% or 100, you know, going 100% and it reacting 100% to them, to their previous ability. So I think that's a big piece of it. But spirited practice, I would go with that. That means it's been competitive and they, they had that pep in the step that I was talking about. I think that's, you know, even more important than clean practice at some point. I think clean practice is important, but you got to have energy, man. This is a game. It's supposed to be fun. They should be in the shape of their lives and have fresh legs.
