Day two Texas Longhorn practice here in the 2020 season. I'm Bobby Burton, joined by Rod Babers and Jerry Hamilton. We're going to talk about that now. This show sponsored by Prize Picks. I got to talk to you immediately, Rod. This was your first time actually seeing the Longhorns in person. Jerry and I gave our initial thoughts yesterday. You give yours today.

Well, just going off kind of just talent level alone, just kind of giving the overview. I mean, this is one of the more talented teams or one of the most talented teams we've seen at Texas in, you know, a long time. Going back to maybe the 08 team, that oh, five team, I mean that's what we're talking about. I played on some of the oh one was probably one of those teams, those really talented team from top to bottom overall, I think. And I was actually talking to Ben Wells about this who's on the staff and he was on that 08 team. He said it does feel like it is at that kind of talent level overall with all the different positions and it's the depth of it too because the younger guys who are, who have really high ceilings. I remember when the young guys, the, the young Michael Huffs and the young, you know, Vince Youngs and those guys came into the fold. Rod Wright, those guys, they were young but they were also really, really talented players. And it feels like you have a, a roster with that kind of depth with the Young, tremendous upside who are building the depth of the roster, but also the high end players who are obviously, inevitably will be drafted really high on to draft, to play on Sundays.

[Bobby Burton]

So the hype matches reality in your opinion as it relates to talent. That's kind of what I'm hearing from you right now.

[Rod Babers]

Just eye test overview alone. There's a lot of other obviously X factors that play into this. You know, chemistry, scheme, continuity, you got a new defensive coordinator, all that, you know, the, the arc of Arch.

[Bobby Burton]

All right.

[Rod Babers]

And his trajectory. But there's no doubt if you're looking at talent level and just ranking the most talented teams that we've seen on the 40 acres in the last 25 years, this should easily be in the top five in my opinion. And that, that I think puts the expectation level probably at an all time high.

[Bobby Burton]

Well, that, that's fair because that I, I was just wanting to know because we've been kind of hyping it. Not kind of. We've said that we thought that. But it's great to hear that you went out there and that's what you saw today.

[Rod Babers]

Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

All right, Jerry, gonna get to you in a second. But first a couple of the notes on injury. Slash, guys held out a little bit of practice. Smoke Matthews again, held out a little bit of practice as well as Elijah Ali, the defense tackle from California. He was held out a little bit. And then Wardell Mack, the defensive back, also I say held out. They were actually sent up to the top area of the field where they kind of let them go through small drills, but nothing that could overheat or get them a little injured. Also, Jaden Chapman was with the offensive line but was somewhat limited. He was taking like every other, every third rep. As opposed, as opposed to every single one, it looked like to, to me. And Jerry, Jerry, I'm going to go to you now. You wanted to talk a little bit about the quarterbacks. Not only was Arch Manning slinging it today, but also Diabel and K.J. lacy.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, you know, that's the thing I wanted, yeah, absolutely wanted to hit on. Right. We talk about Arch a lot. But I, you know, I just want to say this. K. Kolacy and Diabell are some naturally accurate guys. I think they just got, you know, they're former point guards. They got those basketball feet, that movement to him, that kind of smooth movement. But Diabell's really good R match and there's coach must champ talking to Rashin Biles. But I just really like Diabell's arm action. He is going to be an accurate quarterback with that base he's got, the feet, then the base he's got. He really rips his core. And that arm actually action is really just so natural and fluid with him. It's almost like how a left when Diabell throws a football. And KJ Lacy, super accurate as well. I, I feel really good about the post Arch or who obviously K.J. lacy's too. But when you see young guys and you have multiple guys that are naturally accurate passers, you know your quarterback room's in good hands. You never want to have happen what happened to Missouri last year. But Texas has some real accuracy at the, at the quarterback spot at number two and three. And I say 3D Abel three. MJ Morrison come in ahead of him in his emergency quarter. But when they work on the field, it's arch, it's kj, then it's dia. And I feel really good about the accuracy of KJ Lacy and Diabell in the future at Texas.

[Bobby Burton]

I saw one ball, a deep ball from Diabell to Cam Coleman. He led him perfectly. It was one of those deep, deep over routes that Sark loves to run. Oh, yeah, and he threw it out there. And Cam Coleman went out, went over and got it. Guys also checking out the offensive line today. I was able to go over there and spend a lot of time with them. As I mentioned, Jaden Chapman limited a little bit. So that put Dylan Sikorsky in at first team left guard. The rest of the unit stayed the same. Left tackle Trevor Goosby, Connor Robertson, first team center, right guard, obviously Brandon Baker and then right tackle Melvin Siani. I do want to add this. A couple guys look pretty good as backups. Jackson Christian, the center from Port Nature Scrobes, continues to look, look, look the part. Now I will say this. He is three years younger than Connor Robertson, I believe. Right. He has got about. He's got about 3 or 4 inches on Conor Robertson and then a wingspan about 5 or 6 more inches than Conor. So he is. When we talk, start talking about maybe the center of the future. I think that's a realistic thing. Jordan Coleman over there today, running second team left tackle, Andre Kojo, right, second team right tackle, Devin Coleman, second team right guard and then left tackle. They were moving guys in and out all the time. Or left guard, excuse me, Lawrence Seymour obviously up there as well.

I gotta comment on that one.

I gotta, I gotta tell you, they, they do look the part. I mean, this is in terms of the. They have added just, just mass. Massive human. And Andrew Farr looks fantastic for a guy he entered.

[Bobby Burton]

Yeah, yeah.

[Rod Babers]

Fridge, as he is affectionately called on this channel. He looks great. He's moving really well. I just like the way the interior D line. I like the look of them. They look like they are an SEC caliber group that could win you some football games in the sec. And they got to be built to stop the run first, of course. But I think with that group right now, that may be one of the more underrated groups overall because now you look at Justice Terry and the way he looks, I, I've been on the Alex January bandwagon saying he's on the brink of having a big year. We know what Jafraud and Watson and you know, hero Canoe.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah.

[Rod Babers]

All right. Those guys are going to bring to the table as well. They're expected to bring to the table. So I think that group made me feel, like I said really early on. But just looking at them, I feel a lot better about being high on that group going into the season.

[Bobby Burton]

I completely agree, Jerry.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, yeah. I mean, I, I agree. We talked about it yesterday on the look of those guys. And the one thing I was thinking watching him a little bit on day two is so, you know, you got Canoe and you got Jaffrad, you got January and you got Watson. Watson looks really quick again, really quick. You got. So you got those four guys, right? So, you know, okay, my four man rotation is pretty good. But then you look behind those guys in the battles for the fifth and sixth spot. That's when you know you have real depth of talent and young guys. I mean, Myron Charles looks good athletically out there. I mean, I, I love, obviously I'll know. I love skinny ankles on 315 pound guys. Josiah Sharma looks really quick for his size. Planet Fitness Justice Terry looks. He may be the most explosive guy of that group. So you look out there and you're like, okay, this group, if this is what Kenny Baker has fighting for the last Spot, the sixth spot, the fifth spot. He's in really good shape. I mean, like, he's in a really good position. Kenny Baker may be in the best position. Him or Chris Jackson and Jabar Jalup. Those are the three assistant coaches. I say, man, y' all are in really good positions right now because y' all are really testing. Who's my number four running back right now? Who is my backup wide receivers? My first three are really solid. And with Kenny Baker, you know, I got seven guys playing for six spots, maybe eight. That's a great place to be.

[Rod Babers]

Yeah.

[Bobby Burton]

I would add Alan Clark at the edge room. Two guys. I mean, you look out there and not only do you have someone like Colin Simmons, I mean, you got a guy, Colton Vosik that we all know can play and he's healthy and he's fighting for time right now.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yep, yep.

[Bobby Burton]

I mean, Smith Orobo is running fourth team at times at edge and he can play. I'm just, I mean, it was pretty impressive. I want to ask you all about this. I, I was watching the linebackers a little bit and I looked at Rasheen Biles and I said, is that really a linebacker? He is smaller, he's sleek. Yes, he is. What did, did you see that, Rod? I mean, what, what did you think when you, you looked at Rashin Biles?

[Rod Babers]

I listen the film, it doesn't lie. The film don't lie.

Right.

[Rod Babers]

The guy can play. He's a baller. He creates havoc. He just makes plays. He's in. He's instinctual. He's just a guy. Like I said, he's a ball minded defender. I love players like that. But there's no question he is undersized. And I think Tantani Smith is probably going to fit into that mode too. Yeah, I'm happy we're talking about the girth and the size of the D line because I do think you can offset some of their potential issues or concerns you have about linebacker size. Because I do think you'll, you have plenty of it on your defensive front. I think they'll keep those linebackers clean and then that size becomes an advantage and a strength because then those guys can fly around to the football and go sideline to sideline. So I think that's what Muschamp is thinking with Rasheed Boss. And Rasheed Boss will be on. He'll be aggressive, so you'll get him on the attack a lot of the time. So remember that spring showcase, Adam blitzing downhill. Pittsburgh had one of the highest six man pressure Rates and linebacker second level blitz rates in the country. They'll send him on the attack a lot of the too.

[Jerry Hamilton]

I I think what I'm the way I'm looking at Rashim Biles is Xavier Atkins was first team all SEC last year at Auburn. He's 6 foot between 210 and 215. I think bows can be every bit as productive in a different way. A linebacker is Xavier Atkins, who again preseason first team all SEC along with Biles. That's two linebackers under 220 pounds, Rod, that are first team all SEC preseason. Atkinson was all first for Atkins first team last year I think. Are we seeing a little bit of change at the linebacker position? We are in the NFL a little bit. Some lighter guys in that 210 to 220 range, 215 range are really becoming. I don't know if it's a fad, if the if the game's changing a little bit, but we're seeing more of that now.

[Bobby Burton]

They all the one thing about those, they can be small like that or smallish. They have to be a willing even. They have to be willing to be a missile.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Like like when Will Muschamp says be willing to stick your face in the fan for a db. You're living with your face in the fan as a linebacker. You got to be willing to live with your face in the fan.

[Bobby Burton]

That that's what Jimmy Johnson had undersized linebackers a lot of his career just preferred speed. That's a good segue though because Jerry mentioned stick your face in the fan for dbs from, well, Will Muschamp. Rod, you got a good look at the dbs today. Give us the starting lineup that you kind of saw and then take us through the idea of what you saw and what you liked and maybe what you were looking for.

[Rod Babers]

Well, Kate Phillips leading all the drills looks like he's your. You know, he's going to be kind of trying to be the leader in that cornerback room along with Bo Masco. Those are your two top corners. Grayson losing looks like he's going to be the nickel working as the starting nickel right now. Derrick Williams and Jalen McDonald get starting safeties, but Kobe Black is interesting. You know, Kobe Black and Jonah Williams are really interesting right now because I saw Kobe Black, he was getting critiqued on some of his footwork there for a little bit. But I think the transition for him, you know, if he can just prove that he is a guy that will stick his face in the fan as Jerry was just saying, I mean he really could turn his safety position on his head. And then you got another guy, Jonah Williams, who's an allstar prospect, who, if he just stays healthy, he's gonna make enough plays where you got to consider putting him on the field. Right. He's gone. He's gonna earn reps on the field. I think he's just that talented as a player. And I know he's still got to learn how to practice. That's a big thing with him. He's got to learn speed, intensity. It's part of staying healthy. But I think his ceiling is just that high as a player. So that safety position still really, really intriguing to me because right now you look like you have multiple options along with Derrick Williams. By the way, his concern is he's got to learn how. He's got to be, you know, more consistent in man coverage because mushroom safeties play a lot of man coverage and he's gone. That's why he likes Kobe Black there. But he's got to prove that he actually can be a guy that can be an asset in man coverage and not a liability. But he will stick his face in the fan. That's your. That's your best alley cat right now

July McDonald, he's your best all around, everything. But I'm talking about the guys who are competing for their spot. He's definitely the best alley cat.

[Bobby Burton]

But I was going to ask you because I was thinking about this. I thought that Derrick Williams last year was 90 to 95% of what he was the year prior before his injury. Did you see some movement improvement? Because I did. I thought he looked a little more fluid yesterday and today than he did a year ago. At the same time, when he's coming off a knee injury.

[Rod Babers]

Yeah. Looks a little more explosive. I think that's the hope. Right? Because last year, I mean, they passed the rating a lot of things like a 158 passion rating, allowing demand coverage. You cannot have that if you're Derrick Williams because then teams are picking on you. So I think so. I agree with you, by the way, watching him last year, I think he was somewhat limited right. In his moving and demand coverage. That's going to hurt you. I thought he was a lot more fluid. I thought he exploded out of his brakes a lot better, too. I thought he actually did a great job getting in and out of his his pedal as a safety when I watched him this offseason. So hopefully he's past the point where whatever the injury was, the you know, effects from the injury were limiting him in man coverage because that's the key. In zone coverage, he's fine. Like he's effective enough in zone coverage and man coverage. You can be exposed if you don't have fluidity in your movement.

Xavier Phils will be also running second team nickel today. Wardell Mack again, if you didn't hear us at the outset, was out of a little bit of practice. He was up in the non participation group along with a couple other guys. I think it's coming into, into rounding into form. Warren Roberson's another guy that's out there.

[Rod Babers]

He looked good. I know, I know Warren Robertson looks good. Guys in the drills all the time. I know the Warren Robertson's big issue is in the game, some of the mental eras that he's got to clean up as a player. But I'm telling you, he's pretty consistent and he's physical, which is why Mushfeez, he will put his face in the fan. Getting back to Jerry's comments, did you

notice John Meredith, number zero out there?

And they took him, they took him to the side again. Took him to the side again. He was in the middle of drills. I was watching him. I was like, he looks, he does look good. He's smooth Rod that the cornerback. The DB position has never been this big in the history of Texas football.

Never that with Williams. McDonald's the size of the Cade Phillips.

[Rod Babers]

They're just huge.

I don't think they all look like Cedric Griffin.

They all do. We had one or two of those guys back in the day. Now all of them look like that. Oh, I mean, Howard, they're all huge. They're all long and rangy. I'm sorry, I was watching him. But man, of all those guys who he, he, even Kate Phillips, they just move differently for guys that size. And they got that twitch about them. When you see big guys with twitch, it just, you get goosebumps. So he's big with big and twitchy, but they put him to the side. So I don't know if that's just what they do every night, every, you know, practice while he's just making sure, getting acclimated. Yeah, I don't know, but he's going to the side. And then of course, Beckham took this. He didn't, he didn't look like he needed a break and he didn't call for a break. He just kind of called him himself like, hey, come with me. And they went to the side of where the D linemen were and then he's had some. He was talking to him about footwork or something like that. So, yeah, they're taking. They taking it. They're taking it easy with it.

But I think he'll end up working his way into situations where you need a disruptive force, whether that be your NASCAR packages, whether it be your past rushing situations. He's really good against the run, too. It's kind of underrated. We talk about him being disruptive because we know they need pass rush help. They only had, like, 59 total pressures from the D tackle position last year. He'll help that if he plays more.

Well, everybody can look improved against on air and I'm not saying Arch hasn't, but I don't want to. I'm not going to judge off of that. Off to open media window practices when a hundred thousand in the stands and the balls in your hand is what's going to matter the most. So I think that's, that's where I come out on that. I think Arch looks fine, but I'm not going to say, oh yeah, he's definitely better because it's on air. So that's not, that's not really fair because then that just comes back to say, well, this, that's not like playing in the game. In the game's what's going to matter.

So two DBs and the, the freshman defensive lineman, they were up in the, the non contact group working out up at the top. Also, Jaden Chapman, the offensive guard was, he was taking part, but he was like going one out of every three reps, I would call it. He was definitely there, but it felt. What do you just call? Limited. Yeah, limited, I think. I think is the best way to put it.

So other than that, there were no other trainer?

[Jerry Hamilton]

He had a trainer. He had a. Jaden had a trainer close to him after he took a rep. So just. They're kind of monitoring him today, but not totally out of action, but not in every rep. And so that leads to the question, did Seymour move up today? That does technically mean he moved up the second about every third rep. But Szkorski was first out when Chapman was not.

When did the past start popping? David Rawls was. So that'll be next week. I do believe it takes three days to get acclimated. Or maybe it could be. It could be Saturday. That may be a question for Coach. Coach Sarkeesian in the sports information department. We'll find out a little bit more about that. We also have this. Just so Everybody knows, at 4:45 today there's going to be some player availability. We'll be at. We definitely will be bringing you guys some of that information as well. What do we hear about Kobe Black when the patch start popping? Interesting scrimmage as a. As a run defender. All right. If. If we start hearing that he held up really good against the run and I guarantee you Musham's gonna be watching him that he wants to put his face in the fan, then I do think he can make a serious surge and surpass their queen. Right now Derek Williams still has proven that he knows how to come down and be a force dependent to run. If you can't do that in the sec, your safeties will be exploited. He knows that. And I. And so I think that's to me right now I still have Derek Williams. He's running for first team right now. But I do think until Kobe Black can prove that he'll come down and be a forced defender in the run. I I can't see him taking that spot from Derrick Williams right now until he can prove that. If he does, he it's his. He can take it.

Next question here is from Corey Jackson. I haven't heard anything about Ty Anthony Smith lately. How's he looking? Is he getting starter reps? Yes, he is getting starter reps. Look, Ty Anthony looks good. I don't To Rod's point, Texas has some, I don't want to say slight of build because you know, to any normal human they're built like, you know, Adonis, but they are compared to other linebackers, like even Justice Crier or Juice Crier. Excuse me, the other linebacker, he's built more typical of a linebacker. I think Rocky Cummings eventually will be built more typical. But Smith and Rasheed Biles are both more angular body types. So is Brad Spence for that matter, number 14 on defense. So I think that Ty, if he's out there looking good, just got to figure out where they go from here. All right, we've got to get going.
