Blake Monroe
Good morning, everyone. Welcome to Coffee and Football, presented by Von Lane. I'm your host, Blake Monroe, where I'm joined each and every day by Bobby Burton and Jerry Hamilton. Tell us where you're checking in from this morning, what you're drinking. Get those questions in as well. We're gonna have a couple of special guests today. Will Matthews and Henry Melton will be joining us later. Because it's 37 days away from kickoff, Obviously, both of them wore the Number. Number. Number 37 at Texas. And guys, we're 37 days away from kickoff, but we're seven days away from practice starting. So g your loins, as Jerry would
Jerry Hamilton
say, six days away from Sark. And I think speaking as well, normally the day before practice, Bobby, some of the coaches. So seven days from first practice. Six days until they go to the mic one more time.
Blake Monroe
That's right. That's right. Well, I wanted to look at ESPN. Had some playoff predictor chances here. This is their 2026 preseason college football Playoff outlook here. And as far as chances to make the College Football playoff, guys, Texas, third best here, 70% chance at a first round buy. They have the second best here at 44%. And then chance to win the College football playoff, the second best as well, 13%. So not bad. Not a bad starting point for the Longhorns.
Jerry Hamilton
Does that mean they're picking Ohio State to beat Texas, I would guess. I think the ESPN predictor when the game comes out will probably be Texas like 51 and a half to 48 and a half because it's a home game. Interesting. Interesting. I mean, look, I've said before, I think the. Whoever drops and I want to say loser, I guess there's winner or loser. The loser of the Ohio State Texas game will be interesting to see if that team makes the playoffs because the rest of their schedule is really hard. I mean they have one game margin for error. The loser of that game, that is a huge game. It's interesting text that high. I mean, boy, they fought hard for that gambler and we said all along that their odds don't really go down if they have will ham and they're so much more talented than anybody in, in the Big 12. So was it worth it, Bobby? Was it worth it?
Bobby Burton
What do you think? I'm just looking at chances to win. I mean, we could talk about chance to make CFP and first round by. Let's, let's just look at chance to win.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
College Football Playoff looks like there are five teams that shoulder the majority of that load. Oregon, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State. Do you agree with those five?
Jerry Hamilton
No.
Bobby Burton
Who do you. Who would you take out and who would you put in?
Jerry Hamilton
I'm not sure I'd take out, but I'd have Miami at least where Oregon is at 9%.
Bobby Burton
Okay. You would really have six teams?
Jerry Hamilton
Yes. Okay. Yes, I would have six. Because look, I, I know Miami lost four offensive or five offensive line starters, all really good players. But the one thing you know about Miami is crystal ball. And I can't ever remember the short guy's name. The offensive line coach, mirrorball, Alex Mirabell. They have a system of running the football that is going to be successful. And then they bring in Darian Mensah. I think they're going to be better at quarterback this year. Now, no knock on Carson Beck. He ended up playing well in the playoffs until the last throw. But I think Mensah brings a different dimension to the Miami offense than they had a year ago. And they still have Fletcher, they still have that downhill run game because of their scheme and their back. And they've done very well in the portal and they're recruiting at a high level. They're an nil competitor and they're playing out of the acc. I, I like. Look, I know Miami escaped last year. Getting in. They deserved it because they beat Notre Dame even though it was A home game. But I, I think I'd have Miami higher on this percentage. I'd have them right there with Oregon, if not 10 with Georgia.
Bobby Burton
I, Jerry, I gotta be fair to you. I, I agree with you. The only other team that I would put higher up is actually, and it's gonna, it pains me to say this is ou. If they get good quarterback play, that team's gonna be hard out for a lot of.
Jerry Hamilton
They run the football better this year.
Bobby Burton
Well, well, if, if t. Yeah, if they run the football better, therefore getting more value out of their quarterback. Hey, I gotta take a phone call real quick, guys.
Blake Monroe
That's all right.
Jerry Hamilton
No, that's good. Okay, so let's go through the chance to make the cfp.
Blake Monroe
Yeah.
Jerry Hamilton
You know, I think what's interesting, I think obviously Notre Dame's got the best schedule to make.
Blake Monroe
I was gonna say I'd have them number one, Jerry.
Jerry Hamilton
I probably would have them number one as well. I, I not. And I, hey, it's the pressure when you have that type of schedule. I'd have them at 80%. I'd have them at 80%. I mean, they get Miami at home and there's really only two games on their schedule. Unless they get upset in a big way. There's two games on their schedule this year. Did I have them in danger of losing? So it. Do they have to go 11 and one to make the playoffs or can they get in at 10 and 2? That's, that's the question. I know the guarantees everything is talking about, but I'd have Notre Dame number one is the highest percentage. I would have Oklahoma over a. M. Now, I say that with this, the caveat of. I've said this before. I, I really, truly, when I was looking at this SEC schedule the last few weeks, when it came out, I said, okay, Ole Miss and Louisville, week one, Clemson at lsu, week one, Ohio State at Texas, week two, Oklahoma, Michigan, week two. Whichever teams drop one of those games, I think their percentages go down drastically that they make. I mean, you can look at everybody's schedule. X is included. Okay. I think, I think Ohio State's a must win game because the schedules first year, the nine game, SEC schedule, then you have only one off week. I think health is going to be critical in the SEC this year. But if you look at all those teams, whoever drops a game is really up against it early the rest of the season. I mean, there's not, when you look at all these schedules, say, wow, they only have one more loss. They only have one more Loss. And you look at all these schedules and you're like, if you drop that early game, your back's pretty much against the wall out of the gate. Because, I mean, Oklahoma think about Oklahoma. If they lose the Michigan game. And look, I think they're going to be favored to beat Michigan. I think they're a better team than Michigan. But still a road game at Michigan and this ain't Michigan. This is not more. Going to be a more physical team. Oklahoma's gonna have to win that game physically. But if Oklahoma loses to Michigan, they go to Georgia two weeks after that. Yeah, they can't lose the game to Michigan. Then you go to Georgia two weeks later and then you have Texas two weeks later. I mean, give me a break. If Oklahoma loses the Michigan, I don't think they're making the playoff. If Ole Miss loses to Louisville. Who? Louisville. Look, Braum's a good coach. They're gonna, they're gonna score points on you. If they lose that game, look at the rest of their schedule and explain how they make the playoff.
Blake Monroe
Yeah. Then they got.
Jerry Hamilton
Unless a 9 and 3 sec team gets in. That's really where we're at with all this. I. I've never been. I don't think the first game or two has ever been more impactful for the SEC than this year. When you look at the playoffs because of the schedules behind all these teams, I don't think you can afford to take the early hit.
Blake Monroe
And Oklahoma ends with at Florida. Then they host Ole Miss and A M all back to back to back as well.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah. Yes. I mean, Oklahoma's last four. Three. Three or four of their schedule. You don't want to go into that with two losses, having to win them all that. That's where I think this. It's going to be so interesting. But Bobby. I don't know if Bobby's back, but I think.
Blake Monroe
Yeah, he's back.
Jerry Hamilton
Everybody I talked to SEC media Days when we were talking about, I said the same thing. I said, look, guys, I think. I think health is never been more important for the SEC with these teams than this year because you only get the one off week. Now you're used to getting you a little customer to getting two. And it's the first time you played nine games schedule. And so you're removing a cupcake for a lot of these teams in the late season cupcake, which is like another off week. You don't get that anymore. You don't get Alabama versus Samford anymore. Bobby, I think the health of these teams is Going to be big in dictating who makes the playoffs. At the end of the day, I
Bobby Burton
think that's going to be true, period. And I think that, to your point about playing Sanford or UT, Chattanooga or, you know, LA, Monroe, whatever, late in the season, like that is meaningful because it gives you a chance to rest some of your starters, not get them as dinged up. It's. It's going to change the outlook and it may do so for Texas, but Texas never had those late season games. Not never. They've done it back in the Big 12 before. But my point being, and I think the, the piece that I would say to it is that the Longhorns and whoever else is up there with them, whether that's lsu, Georgia, Oklahoma, Aggies, Ole Miss, whoever, right, they're gonna have to make it through some injuries because injuries happen in football. And I think that the issue nowadays is that these teams are deeper than they've been at certain positions, so they can handle more injuries and not have this big fall off. For example, Sterling Burkhalter is a great example of that. Like, Sterling Burkhalter is not as good as Emmett Mosley. No one's saying he is. Okay. But it's a long way from a third year guy falling down to Sterling. It's falling down to a true freshman as opposed to a guy that's caught almost 100 passes in college football. And so there are certain positions I think you can take more hits at and certain ones you can't. So it'll be. It'll come down to the luck of that a little bit. Jerry. Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I had to take a phone call. There is a big vote in the Senate coming up, or not in the Senate, but for the SEC presidents and the big 10 presidents. And so I was trying to get some information on that for you guys. We could discuss that here in a little bit. But first let me say thank you to our friends over at Von Lane. The rivalry route is back. Texas OU week just got a whole lot easier. Von Lane is bringing back its Dallas, Oklahoma city route starting September 8th with multiple departures every single days. It reminds me of a young Southwest Airlines when I was growing up that just kind of exploded. You hear about them expanding all the time. There's a reason Southwest Airlines exploded. I think there's a reason Von Lane is doing the same thing.
Blake Monroe
Good stuff.

Jerry Hamilton
Easy.
Bobby Burton
It's easy, affordable, straightforward. It. It just hits all the marks, in my opinion.
Jerry Hamilton
We just got a official release from the University of Texas on a official tequila of the Longhorns.
Bobby Burton
Bobby, what is it today? This is Hachadero or something like that. Yep. Yeah, I thought that was coming.
Jerry Hamilton
No. Interesting.
Bobby Burton
Where did I. Did I just pull that out of my hat?
Jerry Hamilton
Where It's. Are you surprised it wasn't Tito's?
Henry Melton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
No, not really. Not really. Tito's is definitely. Look that. Tito's isn't a tequila. It's a vodka.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
So.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah. But. But somebody else is that. That's interesting. I guess it's different.
Bobby Burton
No, they. They've had different whiskeys. Like, they. They have. They do it. They do liquor by category.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
By spirit. So vodka, whiskey.
Jerry Hamilton
So Tito's is okay with that? Oh, yes, because that is. Tito's is all over University of Texas. I know it's different alcohols, but I just. The competitiveness there.
Bobby Burton
No, they're fine with that.
Jerry Hamilton
Okay.
Blake Monroe
They.
Bobby Burton
They've sold that that way for years. And I don't look Tito's goes beyond, and I just say this, Jerry's big, polite and kind in the way he's putting it. A huge donor to the University of Texas.
Jerry Hamilton
Yes.
Bobby Burton
In a very positive way across multiple sports and very generous to the University of Texas.
Blake Monroe
All right, well, I think we need to discuss this, guys. Bobby, I'm just going to let you take the lead here on the Protect College Sports Act.
Bobby Burton
Yes. So long story short, lawmaker sent conferences the last and final version of the Prod Protect College Sports act around midnight, revising key sections and setting a 10am deadline for the leagues to agree. Sources tell Yahoo. Big Ten and SEC have set afternoon precedent calls for a vote. In other words, the 10:00am deadline. Like the SEC and the Big Ten are going, I, I know you set a deadline, but like we have like we're beholden to 18 and 16 different colleges. We can't just, you know, make them all get on a call at a moment's notice. And so they're having calls this afternoon. Here's what I can tell you. The bill is now in a situation where all it really does is limit expansion to 19 teams for a conference and puts into place a salary cap as well as a salary cap as well as what I would call a enforcement arm similar to, if not the College Sports Commission to oversee that structure. Personally, I wrote an article and an op ed this morning on, on Texas football that I think this is all
Jerry Hamilton
a bunch of hoo ha, yeah.
Bobby Burton
And here's why. The University of Texas, the, the athletic department just talk about this. Why would we do anything that mutes or minimizes the value of the University of Texas athletic department? It is. College football is America's number two sport. Number two ahead of, ahead of the NBA, head of Major League Baseball, ahead of whatever soccer is going on, hockey. College football is number two. University of Texas has not just been investing in college football and college sports for the last five, ten, five years. Ten years. Or didn't just have this donor walk in the door that's starting to put in $50 million or whatever. Like Cody Campbell, the University of Texas has spent decades upon decades upon decades of investing at a high level for its sports programs and the people that play them, run them, coach them, etc. Why would the University of Texas seed any of that to a team that hasn't been doing that or a program that hasn't been doing that? I'm not saying at this necessarily at the same level, but it makes no sense. Furthermore, both Notre Dame and Ohio State earlier this week got Jersey patch deals for $15 million and $17 million a year. Okay, that's immediate. That's one and a half to two times more. The three most recent deals of other professional franchises in the NBA made any other sport. Okay, those franchises that I'm talking about that got half are valued between 3 and 5 billion dollars. So what's the University of Texas franchise worth? 10 billion. Okay. If you try to handicap it now and take this, University of Texas athletics could be a 25 billion dollar property in 20 years. You try to handicap it now, it may only be 10 to 15. It may go down even. In my opinion, this bill tries to flatline teams in the Big ten and SEC and inhibit their growth so that other teams can rise up to their level. And that on its surface, in my opinion, is bunk.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah, I mean, Cody Campbell wants New Mexico to be on the same level.
Bobby Burton
No, he doesn't, he doesn't care about New Mexico.
Jerry Hamilton
I'm joking, Bobby. That's, I'm joking. That's my part of my joke is, oh, Cody really wants New Mexico to have a chance to compete. This is about one team, I think, something even bigger than any team we talk about. And obviously Bobby does a great job going over, over the, from the Texas angle what ESPN and FOX want. I have a hard time believing they want this passed. I, I, my, my opinion is they would love to see a 2014 Big Ten and a 24 team SEC in a few years. And they control all of college football. I mean, can you get with Bobby? I mean, that's got to be where FOX and ESPN come out.
Bobby Burton
I don't know where the, I think that FOX and espn, while they would like to see those things happen, they're, they react to whatever is popular in American sports. So if, if college football, for whatever reason is no longer as popular as it once was, they'll just go to another sport.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
So I think, I think they are truly actually, Jerry, they spend so much money, Amazon, Apple are now in the game as well. They're, they don't care what the popular sport is. They just, if it, if it's that sport, they want to be on top of it so that they get the ad dollars. Okay, So I, I think they're slightly agnostic about what sport it is that they cover. They just want the dollars to keep flowing.
Jerry Hamilton
But if college football is a number two most popular sport, aren't they also looking at how can we keep it there for our pocketbook?
Bobby Burton
Not necessarily because they look, sports are always going to be it's the one. Live sports is still the number one driver of advertising revenue in, in, in all of television and streaming because no one can replace the live action like everything else is recorded. Right? The live action, you can't turn away. That's why the super bowl ads are so valuable. You don't turn the channel if you're watching Texas and Oklahoma. You may me and you may flip it over to watch what's happening in another game real quick. But the, the normal fan is not switching it over. The hyper fan may be switching between games, but most people, they're locked into that game. Whereas if it, if it's a Friends episode, oh, they're turning the channel, they're seeing what else is going on, they're checking the weather, you know, whatever. And so my, my point being, I don't think they care what the number two sport is or what have you unless they think it has growth. And I, I will say this.
Jerry Hamilton
It has growth.
Bobby Burton
It has growth. And that's what I'm saying. University of Texas say it's a $10 billion property right now from a sports, sports athletic department. You know, most people peg it at around 5 billion, by the way, but say it's 10 billion. If this goes into effect, I think that Texas could get 10 to 15 billion valuation type property. If it doesn't and you just let the market dictate things, University of Texas could be 25 billion in 10, 15 years. That's where it's going with the explosion of the sport. And so why would Texas, after making decades and decades of investment to put itself in this position, acquiesce to a lower threshold to let Texas Tech, or I mean Oklahoma State or Iowa State, I mean, look, Texas has spent billions of dollars over the last 50 years building up its program, reinvesting. Ohio State's done the same, Notre Dame has done the same. Florida has done the same same. Texas Tech hasn't. They're fairly recent players into this. Yeah. And they want the free jump up without having to pay the 50 years of investment price.
Jerry Hamilton
Well, and Cody. And Cody knows Texas Tech football's cook, if to use the, the kids terms cooked, because you hear it from all the time. If it goes to two super conferences because they won't be in it, there is no future for them with the same ability to have a shot to compete at the highest level. If it goes to two super conferences and they aren't in one of those. He knows it. We all know it. Do you see that? He's fighting for the future of Texas Tech football in a big way with this.
Bobby Burton
I bet Texas Tech gets, would get in somehow some way if there's 48 teams, maybe not if there's 40. Right. I, I, I think that he is certainly acting out of self interest. We all do. So I don't, I don't blame him for that. I blame the bill's architects for listening to him before they listen to the SEC and Big Ten as I wrote this morning. Why did this bill come from Emanate from someone that really is a lesser player in college sports. And the only reason is he has sway, political sway. You know, why is the, the, why is the president of the New York Yankees involved in this when just like Cody Campbell, he has one second the New York Yankees guy, he definitely has a conflict of interest.
Jerry Hamilton
Yes.
Bobby Burton
He wants, he wants baseball to be bigger than college football.
Jerry Hamilton
Well, MLB is with what you're talking about, Bobby. That is mlb. That's why I've called all this Major league, minor league Baseball. This is what college athletics is right now. Texas is in Texas and Ohio State and they're the Yankees and the Dodgers of all this. And he's with the Yankees and fighting against what he's part of in mlb. Just think about that, think about that for a second.
Bobby Burton
He's not fighting that. That's not my point. Like I don't think he looks at it the same way that you're looking at it. I agree. The Yankees in Texas are in Ohio State are kind of Notre Dame or the equivalent, okay, the Dodgers and the Red Sox and the Yankees, the big money teams. That's fine. What I'm saying is baseball as a whole is conflicted with college football because you're looking at the third or fourth most popular sport in America and comparing it to number two. Of course the Yankees president wants to kneecap the number two sport in America if it can because then the Yankees are worth more. That's what I'm getting. If we just, if you just let market forces take control. There are some issues right now in college football. There is no doubt about nils run rampant. Okay, we get it. But this isn't the solution to it. A bill that simply addresses only nil would be great. But that's not what this bill is. It also wants to say, oh, only 19 teams per conference and you have to do you have to play these rivals. It's all my point being that, you know, we have to look at it from a University of Texas perspective. And I think Kevin Eltife, Chris Delta Gate, Jim Davis are trying to do that. If I told a owner of a business that you do this deal and you're going to be capped at probably what you're worth over the next 15 to 20 years until more legislation comes along. Or you could roll the dice and be potentially worth 25 billion because, you know, college football and college basketball is not going away.
Jerry Hamilton
No, it's going to get bigger.
Bobby Burton
You know, my. What. So what would my solution be? Narrowly define the issues. Don't try to lump everything into one big bill. Address them separately so you can agree on them separately. All this, you know what it does? It's. It's horse trading. When you throw a bunch of things in from one side like Cody Campbell and Randy Levine and Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell did, then you start this horse trading, well, we win this and you win that instead of getting a clean bill. And now I, I thought it was awesome that the SEC and Big Ten both asked for the actual text of the proposed bill before giving any kind of approval or non approval because Congress. And again, I am apolitical on this. I, I just completely. What, what are they known for? Pork barrel, add in things. Oh, I want to get this guy's vote at the last minute. They put in something on Tuesday called the save HBCU sports part of the plan. First time it's been mentioned. Like, I have no problem with hbcu. I mean, I, I want to save them. You know, that's great. But you're adding and asking people to approve this without there were. The section was actually left blank of how we're going to save them. And yet that directly affects the whole bill. So it's all this horse trading is what I call it going on. Well, we'll give you this if you give us this instead of just narrowly defining the singular issue.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
How do we deal with nil? Great. How do we deal with super conferences? Do we want to deal with super conference? Great. How do we deal with recruiting that that's how things should work? Instead, they're lumping everything together and trying to pass it all at one time and it ends up convoluted. And I, I actually applaud the Big Ten commissioner and the SEC commissioner asking for the actual text of the bill so they can read it as opposed to just voting. Oh, yeah, well, this sounds good. This is going to be great. And then at the last minute, Cody Campbell from West Texas stick something in the bill and to get them across the board. I mean, it's ridiculous.
Jerry Hamilton
I think that's already in there. I. I stand by what I've always said on this and. And I will till my last day but that this will all come to fruition or it's going to get. I don't think it's going to pass way before then. Hopefully only 19 teams per conference. That is the big. That is the number one thing in this Texas Tech does not want two 2014 conferences because they know they're not guaranteed to be in it. Bottom line, if you say the SEC's at 16. We've talked about this on this show before. Who what forward had to be added to get the 20. Texas Tech isn't one of those. So already wiped that out. Who's the four? Who's the next four to get the 24? None of us think Texas Tech's good at an SEC. When the Big Ten who has 18 if they start chipping away and they add Notre dame as a 19th, maybe they add. They're gonna add somebody from the ACCs at 20th when the ACC breaks up. They're gonna add Kansas before Texas Tech. Can Texas Tech get in either one of those conferences because if they don't they know their. Their football and athletic future is much more limited financially than it is now. I'm stand by what I've said. That is the number one issue because it's fighting for your survival 15, 20 years from now in college athletics. That. That's my. I think the rest of it is great talking points and I think we're getting away and I think that's what this. Bobby, that's what you were talking about. It's helping get away from what this is really about. If this thing passes. And there's only in part of that is there's only 19 teams per conference that saved Texas Tech. Texas Tech's football future because that means that Big Ten and SEC can't go to 24 because they don't think they'll be in it. That's my take on this. Does any. Bobby, I don't think that you don't. We said before they won't get in the SEC. They wouldn't be one of 24 in the SEC. The Big Ten is already 18. See if you limit it to 19. So what happens if the Big 12 gets 14 three teams pulled to the Big Ten. Then the Big 12 Conference breaks up. So what's left for Texas Tech if they're not in the 24 team conferences they're playing in the Pac 12 slash Big 12.
Bobby Burton
They're.
Jerry Hamilton
They're done financially.
Bobby Burton
Yeah. I don't even care about Texas Tech. For me. It's not. It's. It's about what's best for a University of Texas.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah, but that's why this bill's been brought up.
Bobby Burton
Texas Tech. Talk out of it and just focus on what's best for the University of Texas, in my opinion. That doesn't mean this is the way Texas is going to vote today, by the way. I'm not putting words into anybody's mouth, okay? In my opinion, this bill is not in the best interest of the University of Texas, period.
Jerry Hamilton
Well, here's my. Here's my final question on this. If Texas Tech was in the sec, would Cody Campbell have ever walked this bill?
Henry Melton
No.
Bobby Burton
And you're going back to Texas Tech. Stop with Texas.
Jerry Hamilton
What the bill's actually about, Bobby, else it wouldn't have been brought up, probably. So, yeah, I mean, that's. Let's get to the real deal on this. Let's get to the real deal on this. If Tech was already in the Big Ten or sec, Cody Campbell would have never brought the bill. So what does that tell you from a common sense perspective? What is this about? It's all about saving Texas Tech's future in college athletics. That's all this is about. It ain't about Texas Tech. It's not about San Jose State. It's not about Sacramento State. This bill would have never been brought forward if Tech would have already been in one of the two big conferences.
Bobby Burton
Completely agree, actually. That was the impetus.
Jerry Hamilton
It's interesting, but from a Texas perspective, from Ohio State perspective, Georgia perspective, Hell no, you don't want this.
Bobby Burton
Why would you? You guys, you have a 10 billion dollar business that can be 25 billion in 20 years. Why would you try to kneecap it at 10 to 15 for the next 25 years? It didn't.
Jerry Hamilton
Makes no sense. Yeah.
Blake Monroe
All right, guys, well, we got. We got some super chats that we need to get to. Some questions, more topics to cover even. But first, Bobby, I need you to tell everyone about one of our sponsors today. That's SeatGeek.

And I'm going to tell everyone this morning about our friends over at Prize Picks. Because we're always looking for ways to make watching games a little more fun. And that's exactly, exactly why we love Prize Picks. It's America's number one sports pick app, and honestly, it's about as simple as it gets. For Player Picks, all you do is choose more or less on a few player stats and then you lock in your lineup. That's it. And if you're someone who likes picking teams instead of individual players, Prize Picks has you covered there too. You can now pick the winner, the spread, or the total on games and even fights. And Prize Picks is available in most states, including Texas, California and Florida. So chances are you can jump in today. One of my favorite features is that you can follow users on the app. If you like the picks they're making, you can tell them with one click. And of course, you can follow your friends as well. And here's the best part. If you've never tried Prize Picks before, play your first $5 lineup. If you win, you're going to get $150 in bonus lineups. Just make sure you use code HMA when you sign up. They actually just updated this offer, so there's never been a better time to get started. And if you want with what I got today, I'm going to put that up on the screen here. I got Kayla McBride in the W to have less than 17 and a half points. Yes, I know she's been on a hot streak lately, but we're taking less today and then Sean Burke to have more than four and a half strikeouts. So come follow me on Price Picks and tell those picks or make your own. Download the Prize Picks app today. Use code HMA when you sign up. Play that first five dollar five dollar lineup and if you win, you're going to get $150 in bonus lineups. That's prize picks code HMA. Good luck to you. And as always, play smart. Play responsibly. Play prize picks.

The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going for it? This exclusive place that dad has connections with. They have more cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else. You have to put me in touch. What's it called? It's Dune Dial. Where? Dune DL. There's an accent on the E. Do you mean. Yes. I got it on. Done deal cars. Lift please. You going past Kimage? Oh, Kimmage. No. Done deal cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
Blake Monroe
All right, we got some super chats that we need to knock out this morning. This first one here from Juan Garza. Thank you, Juan. We appreciate you as always. He says if you all had to choose between Kiffin and Sark for the Texas job, who will it be? Who do you want? The chaos of Kiffin or the calm steadiness of Sark?
Bobby Burton
I'm good. With what where it's at right now.
Henry Melton
Guys.
Bobby Burton
You know, I don't, I don't think we need Lane Kiffin at pilates workouts at 5:30 in the morning on West Campus. I just gotta put that out there.
Jerry Hamilton
Easier stalking.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, it would be easier stalking Lane Kiffin than Steve Sarkeesia. But I, I just, I, I, I would just say that would be my answer on West Campus would be a, a bad thing, I think.
Blake Monroe
How about you, Jerry?
Jerry Hamilton
I mean, look, Sark's been the two college football playoffs. I, Lane had an opportunity and didn't. So he hasn't been the one. So let's see what Lane does at lsu.
Blake Monroe
And then we got one here from Dante. Thank you, Dante. Does ou A&M really have a chance of beating us when they couldn't beat us at our worst last year? Arch Coleman, Relique Bishop, Hollywood. I can't see it says Dante.
Bobby Burton
I think you has a better chance than A and M. I, I, I still don't. And I'll continue. This I don't understand. I think that, I think A and M did really well in the Portal. I don't think they replaced what they got or what they had. And they weren't one of the best five teams, 10 teams in the country at the end of last year. They can say they were, but they couldn't move the football against anybody. Texas and I mean so I ou I think has a Better chance than A M. And OU has a better chance because they have a better run game. They hope they have a better run game. They have older offensive linemen. They also have, they brought in a tight end that I think is a better blocker than what they had previously. And I think they, they have a whale of a defense. Oh, you really does have a big, I mean Texas scored what, 17 points on offense last year. So if, if Niblett doesn't have that return, what does OU need to score to win that game? And can they do?
Jerry Hamilton
I think what, I think something interesting. I brought this up the rod yesterday after a show we recorded and I think he was doing the research. People in the chat. Sorry, allergies killing me. Still do the research if you can because I don't know the answer to this. Sometimes some of this stuff comes down the law averages. Has Texas ever beat in the modern era, Oklahoma three years in a row and A&M three years in a row in succession. Have they ever had three game winning streaks against Oklahoma and A and M at the same time?
Bobby Burton
Yes.
Jerry Hamilton
No, I'm talking, I'm talking modern era. I'm not talking like all time. So I, I, it's interesting because some of this stuff's just, you know, look, are you gonna beat both of them three times in a row? Sometimes it's just, it's a law of averages thing. You have a bad game or some, they have a great game. Do I think Texas will be favored in both? I mean, I can't say for sure they're gonna be favored against Oklahoma. We'll have to see how those first four games play out for both. I think right now obviously they're favorite over Oklahoma, but I think sometimes it's just something comes down to that. A ball doesn't bounce your way and you don't win three games in a row against the team. You know, you don't win three games in a row against both those teams. Something just happens. Maybe you have a key injury going into A and M game, you know, that hurts you. It's, it's, it's. So much of that is, comes down to, you know, sometimes it's healthy team, sometimes it's the way a ball bounces. But you can, that's hard to do to beat your two rivals three years in a row each.
Bobby Burton
The last time Texas has won three consecutive games over its rival over Oklahoma is 97 to 99. So it hasn't even been this century. This would be the first time this century Texas had a three game win streak over OU.
Blake Monroe
As far as beating both of them, it's 68 through 70.
Jerry Hamilton
That's a long time. That's a long time. So you just gotta see sometimes it's a ball bounce, doesn't bounce your way. But Texas will probably be favored. I say probably because if, oh, you happened to go win at Georgia and they win at Michigan and Georgia, Oklahoma will probably be favored over Texas at that point.
Bobby Burton
Well, unless Texas is, unless Texas beats
Jerry Hamilton
Ohio State and then at Tennessee. So, I mean, Texas will be favored over Oklahoma as of right now in that game. But some people, Steven Houston, Texas has never been this much better than A and M and Oklahoma. How much better is to be determined? Just being fair. How much better is to be determined? I, I don't think Texas is drastically better than those two teams. I don't, I don't think we're talking about that type of difference here. I think we're talking about margins that aren't that big.
Bobby Burton
OU and A and m. I think ou's top 10 most talented team in the country because of its defense. Yeah, I, I want to say that I think A and M is in that 10 to 20, 11 to 20 range.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
This year. Now, they may be, by the way, respond.
Jerry Hamilton
I'm not saying Texas isn't more talented, but I don't think it's by the. And I'm not talking about Bobby, I'm talking about the chat. It's not by some big, large margins. It's not. It's just not. We're not talking about, we're not talking about Nick Saban's Alabama teams versus, I mean, think about the margins. Alabama, it was not a big talk
Bobby Burton
about 10 NFL draft picks versus seven, not 10 versus two.
Jerry Hamilton
Exactly.
Bobby Burton
Yeah.
Jerry Hamilton
We're not talking about big margins here. We're not talking about, I mean, think about the margins were never that big between Nick Saban and LSU from a draft standpoint, from a talent standpoint. Hell, even Auburn back that time played for two national titles, you know, So I don't think the margins are that great to where it's just, oh, there's no doubt. I think this Texas team's very talented. We got a great guess, by the way.
Blake Monroe
We do. It's time to bring him in this morning. Henry Melton, former Longhorn. How's it going, Henry?
Henry Melton
What's up?
Bobby Burton
Hey, how you doing, Harry? Number 37. We're 37 days away from, from Longhorns getting back on the field. Henry, thank you for joining us. I, we also, before we get going. A lot of us here had been following your health issues that you had. I guess it was last year where you had an aortic dissection. Is that the accurate term? And you were in the hospital quite a bit. You look fine and healthy right now. How is your health and tell us how. How that all went.
Henry Melton
It's. My health is great right now. Obviously was a big scare. You know, I had to relearn to do a lot of things just because I had my circulation to my legs cut off for a little while. And once the blood flow and everything started to come back, I had to rehab and relearn how to walk pretty much.
Bobby Burton
Wow.
Henry Melton
Which is pretty difficult. But, you know, as people have said, I got that dog in me. So, you know,
Bobby Burton
hey, look, you follow the Longhorns, I'm sure. What do you think of Steve Sarkeesian and what he's done at Texas the last couple of years? And you excited about this season?
Henry Melton
Yeah, I mean, he's done an amazing job. You know, I'm just excited to see. You know, I went to a few games last season. I was at the. The Red River. Red river game. That was a blast. What other game did I go to? I think I went to a home game that was hotter than hell. But I saw something that they were like. I got fooled. I think it was like April Fool's where they. They said they were gonna put a dome on it or something. I was like, those games are hot. I don't even. Like, I'm in Chicago now, and I have not. Nah, I'm not. I'm out of that Texas weather and I. That. That, my ass.
Jerry Hamilton
Hey. Hey, Henry, I got a question. We've never had you on this show, but I've always wanted to ask you because you were a really good running back coming out of Grapevine High. Obviously you. A lot of us that were in the business said, okay, you're going to be £300. You're going to grow out of that high school. Kid doesn't see that at the time. So I have this question for you. What was your first touchdown as a running back at Texas or sack in the NFL? Which one was bigger for you? Because your first dream was being a running back, right? So you scored that touchdown at Texas, but the ultimate goal is always to play in the NFL. What was. What was bigger for you? Was it that first touchdown as a running back at Texas or was it that first sack in the NFL?
Henry Melton
Oh, man. I mean, those are just two way different timelines. I Feel. I mean, obviously, you know, going to college is huge. You know, playing on. Even like that my first touchdown was on a national championship team.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Henry Melton
So, I mean, that's, you know. No, like, that's like 1% of even college athletes even get to experience a type of season like that. So that's like a whole nother. Whole nother level. Scoring touchdowns on the national championship team where as a true freshman was. Was amazing. I mean, you know, Jamal, you know, I played with. Came in same time, Jamal Charles, so he kind of set the bar. And, you know, I was just a big dude that also could run the rock. So, you know, that's. I think we both still. I think we're both still up there. It's like freshman touchdown leaders for the school. I think he's like, maybe one or two. I'm like two or three, four. I don't know somewhere, but I feel third. But nobody knows that. A lot of people don't know. I played running back, so it was pretty. Pretty cool to. But also, man, like, switching the defense, sacking a quarterback, like, running. Running the ball, unless you got to run through a lot of people. Like, I was on the national championship team. I ran. I ran over a lot of people, but also that old line was sick. So a lot of them, I just ran straight and just got in there fairly easy. Getting a sack is really, really, really hard. It's really hard. You can have the best rush, the best, like, power move. Every. The ball's gone. Like, a lot of things gotta go your way to get that first sack. And my first sack in the league was on Brett Favreau. Sack fumbled him. So that's like.
Bobby Burton
I don't know.
Henry Melton
So it's like, yeah, I've had, like, those are just two different trajectories, to be honest. But both of them were, you know, amazing for, you know, that time. You know, I think those four or five. Five years apart. So, I mean, yeah, sacking a quarterback's amazing because you. Because just being on the offensive side, they don't like to be touched. They don't like it. They like to stand upright. They like to breathe all that good air and get the ball out, look cool. And then when you hit them and bring them down, man, I don't know. Sacking the quarterbacks is such a good feeling. And you just, like. They try to change that rule where you can't lay on them and stuff. When I was back, like, you were allowed to lay on them a little bit. Give him a little bit.
Blake Monroe
Because.
Henry Melton
Because I know they hate that.
Bobby Burton
Henry, I got a question for you. Jerry alluded to it. You're highly recruited. You come in as a running back, but you make the move to defense. So that is going to happen to players at Texas this coming fall, maybe that are switching positions, maybe from offense to defense or maybe from cornerback to safety. How did you listen to that and take that advice? Or did you go to the coaches with that? How did that all come about? And what advice would you give to kids that are similarly situated to you on this Texas team?
Henry Melton
I mean, I trusted the coaches. Like, obviously I was on the national championship team, so there was no reason for me not to believe that they knew what they were doing and what knew what they were talking about. I mean, that was when obviously I said Jamal Charles, but that was when he really, going into my junior senior year, he, you know, they were going to make him the focal point, like he was going to be the bell cow. And we had lost, you know, some, a lot of guys to the league at that same time. So they asked me if I wanted to make that switch. You know, like I said, like, you know, I still have the measure. Obviously I was a big dude, still has speed, agility, quickness. I was just super raw, like putting my hand in the ground. Even in high school, I didn't really put my hand in the ground a whole lot. I played outside. I played both ways on in high school, but I played more outside standing up and then. So just making that transition, I would just say, you know, believe in them. You know, a lot of the guys know, they know what they're talking about and just grind. I mean, I, I spent like outside of practice a lot of hours just trying to get in my stance, just trying to make sure I got the fundamentals right. Like, like defense is like running back. You can't be. I'm trying to find the word. You just can't be like scared. But there's another word for it. Like just the football is just like that type of mentality. Like defensive wise, especially like defensive line, you know who you're going to go. That's like a mono Emano type of position where you know, who are you going to go up against 95% of the game. And this is like a grudge match the entire game. Like you try to figure out what he's going to do, you look at his tendencies. So a lot of the things is fundamentals and you know, Oscar Giles, you know, Brian Arakpo, they all helped me, you know, figure out the Position. It helped having, you know, first round, you know, all pro type of guy to learn from and watch, even just on my own team, not even having to look at a whole lot of other people's film when they get. And that's. That helped me get drafted. You know, switching position, you know, I was raw. But a lot of people were looking at his tape and they were like, who's this other guy on the other side? He's not too shabby. Oh, that's the guy that switched from running back, you know, so, you know, it's some, some things like that. It's like you got to trust your coaching and, you know, if you can play, they'll find you. That's the league. Like the. This is what it is. That's the game.
Bobby Burton
Did you have a problem any at all? Because one of the things I was remarkably surprised by when you made that switch because I was covering Texas at the time. You were actually as physical, if not more physical on defense than you were running the football. I thought. It's like a lot of people who change from offense to defense have a problem with the physicality of the game. You did not. You just. You took to it like a duck in water. Was that just something that naturally came to you or was it a mindset change for you?
Henry Melton
Yeah, I mean, I guess I came over on the fact of, you know, we just had a good defense already. I mean, I think one of our of those, I mean, we should have won. We should have went to the Natty, like my senior year. Our defense was really good. So it was just more of those things like, you know, coming from the offensive side, you got to show them you're not. You're not. No jump. So it's just like it's all mentality. Football is a mentality game. That's why, you know, they show these drills that turn football players into basketball players or football players into, you know, golfers or something like, you know, this sport's not for me. So it's like football is definitely a mentality type of sport where you have to embrace and love contact. You can't shy away from it or you will get exposed.
Jerry Hamilton
Hey, Henry, I got a question for those that aren't familiar with your recruitment. Who did you choose Texas over back in the day? And what was it about? Matt Brown, because we know he's a great recruiter. That won you over?
Henry Melton
I mostly, I mean, I talked to Mac a lot. That was when you just had to like, cold call, you know, kids. There wasn't it was like. It was a whole different recruiting process, man. I was like, I. I'm. I'm a little jealous of the nio, but, you know, I'm happy for him that. Because it's crazy. I'm like, oh, my gosh. They would have brought out the wheelbarrow. This is. This is wild. But, yeah, I mean, I had. I think I had offered from every D1 school at that time. And then, I mean, OU was pushing real hard, but I took. I went up to Norman. I was like, no, this.
Bobby Burton
This ain't it.
Henry Melton
This ain't it. I can't. There's. There's no way. I was thinking about Florida State because they wanted me to play running back, and that was when they were using big running backs, too.
Bobby Burton
Yep.
Henry Melton
Back in the day. And my old. Like, my rival high school. Christian Ponder.
Jerry Hamilton
Yes.
Henry Melton
Yeah. So I kind of. We kind of grew up in the same neighborhood, and he was trying to get me to go to Florida State, and it was on my. But it was like, I'm just such a. I was such a hometown guy. Like, I wanted my mom and family to be able to come to the games and stuff. So that's obviously heavy in recruiting.
Blake Monroe
So.
Henry Melton
Yeah, I mean, Texas was really good, and that was a pretty. It wasn't. It wasn't a too difficult decision for me.
Bobby Burton
Hey, Henry, speaking of that, have you. Have you ever been a free agent before?
Henry Melton
Free agent in football.
Bobby Burton
In the NFL. So let me ask you this.
Henry Melton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
Okay.
Blake Monroe
You have been.
Bobby Burton
Yeah. And so let me ask you this. I feel like some of recruiting with NIL these days is a lot like free agency. Right. You may have three or four teams that are all the same financially or thereabouts. Right. Two years for 20 million or three years for 30. And they're all in the same kind of category. When you were making your decision, how did you make that final decision if there were a couple teams that were very close to one another?
Henry Melton
I based it on who I knew as, Like, I did it three years in a row. And all of them usually had ties to coaches that I had already worked with and location and obviously some money.
Blake Monroe
Yeah.
Henry Melton
But I had. Because coming from Chicago, my defensive. My defensive coordinator went to Dallas. So that was like. I mean, I took visits all over. Like, Minnesota wanted me and Seattle. I took a visit to Seattle. They wanted me all the. Seattle was just too far. That was just. No way. I'm like, what? I didn't even know it was that far. I was like, there's. There's not a Chance I'm gonna come out here, no one's gonna be able to see me. But so obviously. And then Dallas, you know, made a pretty solid offer and I was, I had familiarity with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and then obviously it's home. So. Yeah, it was, that was a pretty.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, that's what I say. That's what I'm trying to tell everybody. Like these guys in, in college football in high school and even with the portal nowadays, they're similar to free agents like you were. They could kind of like they're gonna be a couple schools that are in the same neighborhood financially. And then it's about who it is actually about recruiting. About who you like more. Who you know more. It kind of gets back to that once you kind of ferret out who's serious about you and who's not. So.
Henry Melton
Yeah, and it's, you know, obviously I don't know how these kids are, but you want to play and they, they, you know, they offer you like, you know, at this price point if they're gonna pay you like back in, back then it was like we can beat you to, to dirt and we don't have to. Like we recruited you, yeah, but we don't have to play you. We owe you nothing. Like you got a scholarship, you're getting free school. Like we tried now it's like they have actually invested in these kids so they have to play them. It's like the NFL. It's like you might have a backup that's might be playing a little bit better than that starter, but this guy is making so much money that there's no way we can bench him. And it's going to be the same thing in the, in, in college. Like these kids are going to be so much, like there's gonna be so much money invested in them that they might have somebody else making a little bit less or nothing that they can't play over.
Bobby Burton
One final question for you, if you don't mind. You played for Will Muschamp at Texas your final year. What, what were your thoughts on Will as a defensive coordinator and what do you think he brings to the table for Texas?
Henry Melton
Oh, I love Will. I mean he's, he's a hard nosed guy. Reminds me of my, reminds me of Rod Marinelli from Chicago. Defense coordinator. Just hard nose. Just doesn't sugarcoat it. Just let you know how it is. But that's my, I mean he pulled me, man. When I switched to defense I was just so raw. Didn't really know a whole lot. Just Worked my ass off. But he, like, he found me, like, dead ass. Like, he. He pulled me from the depths of hell in the depth chart and then worked with me, like, literally, he did. So I owe him a lot. That's my guy. But I mean, you gotta be. You can't be soft. You can't be soft like these, like, he's, you know, the prima donnas now, I don't know how they're acting, you know, getting all this money. You know, they don't like to be yelled at. They want to transfer. So, I mean, he's. He's a yeller. If anybody knows Will, he's. He's gonna. He's gonna yell at you. He's gonna let you know how he feels. So I don't know how that's going to fare in this type of football era with the, with the, with the kids. But, yeah, I mean, if you can take tough coaching, he, obviously, he knows what the hell he's doing. Definitely listen to him. And I think he's going to get us. Get us going.
Jerry Hamilton
Actually, I'm going to ask you one last question and thank you very much for the time, Henry, because I think this is the most important question I can ask you. So Grapevine High has Post Malone, Demi Lovato, and Nora Jones. Is. People have gone to Grapevine High. So can everybody sing? Can you sing? I mean, or did you not get the singing gene? Because, like, Grapevine High produces all these great singers and stars.
Henry Melton
Oh, I can sing.
Bobby Burton
Okay.
Henry Melton
The eyes of Texas are.
Bobby Burton
Henry, thank you so much, brother. He's taking care of his kiddos this morning. So, Henry, take care, man.
Henry Melton
And we appreciate my son. He's actually really good right now, so he. He wanted me to do this, so we're great. Come on, Daddy daycare over here.
Bobby Burton
37 days away from the University of Texas taking the field. Henry, thanks, man, and best of luck to you. And thanks for representing Longhorn so well over the years.
Henry Melton
Appreciate it. Thanks for having me.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, have a good one, man. One of the best jumbo athletes ever at the university.
Jerry Hamilton
Oh, yeah. People don't remember I played running back. Almost came back with. I bet the guys in your district probably ran over their ass every Friday night for about two years. I had to ask him if he could sing, though. I mean, what high school public schools produce and like, obviously Nora Jones, they all go. They leave their senior year and go to these more the Jewel Yards or whatever. But post Malone, I mean, Demi Lovato, Nora Jones, that's pretty strong.
Blake Monroe
I know Went to great bomb. That's crazy.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
Now we can add Henry Melton's version of the Eyes of Texas.
Jerry Hamilton
That's right.
Blake Monroe
All right, guys, we got some more super chats to get to. But first, if you don't mind, Bobby, I need you to tell everyone this morning about Warby Parker.
Bobby Burton
I could do it. You guys know I love Warby Parker. I wear them all the time. They are my choice for glass wear for my eyeglasses. They allow you to get progressive lenses. All you have to do is send in your, your prescription and they'll match you with glasses that they can use for, for that. I use them all the time. I've been wearing them now for almost a little bit more than a year when we first started talking to them. Look, I love them. They also have these now they have sunglasses or sport glasses that they're calling them that have no slip nose pad, wraparound design, flexible lightweight nylon contrasting enhancing lenses that block 100 of UVA and UVB rays. They are just tremendous glasses and a tremendous product that I can't emphasize more. Man, I need an employee discount to shield. That'd be sick.
Bobby Burton
Get cold.
Jerry Hamilton
Cold can work,
Bobby Burton
Sa. That would save you a little bit, wouldn't it?
Blake Monroe
Man, we spent so much. It's school clothes shopping time. Well, we will be at Shields this weekend. Probably the one in the Colony.
Jerry Hamilton
Okay.
Blake Monroe
But we will definitely be dropping the cash at Shields this weekend. I'm not looking forward to it.
Bobby Burton
I've been inside the One. I gotta say this. I've been inside the One. And me and producer Matt went over there. The one they're building in Cedar Park. There's a Ferris wheel inside of it. They have this big huge yeti thing. They've got a mountain where I. It is crazy what they do with that.
Jerry Hamilton
What? Bobby? Hold on, hold on. Why did you not cut a commercial when Matt was there on Shields? On the Ferris wheel, Matt?
Bobby Burton
Because I'm not you, Matt.
Jerry Hamilton
Before the season opener, Bobby needs to go on the Ferris wheel at Shields. Maybe the whole OTF team will as a commercial for sure.
Bobby Burton
Well, Jerry, guess. Guess what? We're going to do a live remote from Shields.
Jerry Hamilton
There you go.
Bobby Burton
You'll get your fair chance to go.
Jerry Hamilton
I'll do it.
Bobby Burton
Broadcast from the top of the Ferris wheel.
Jerry Hamilton
I'll do it.
Bobby Burton
We'll let you do it. Blake, like, no.
Blake Monroe
There's no way I'd get on that Ferris wheel. Or any Ferris wheel for. For that matter.
Child
The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going for it? This exclusive place it dad has connections with, they have more cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else. You have to put me in touch. What's it called? It's Dune Dial.
Jerry Hamilton
Where?
Child
Dune DL. There's an accent on the E. Do you mean. Yes, I got it on. Done deal cars. Lift, please. You going past kimage? Oh, kimmage. No. Done deal cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
Blake Monroe
We got a question here from Terence. Thank you, Terrence. He says, hey guys, you think Arch will break Colt McCoy's single season passing records this year? Terrence says he thinks Arch wheel easily more games potentially.
Jerry Hamilton
That's a big part of it.
Bobby Burton
Oh, that. I don't think he's going to break his completion percentage ref. No, I don't think that's going to happen now.
Jerry Hamilton
3,859 yards, 34 touchdowns.
Bobby Burton
I'm looking at his stats right now for college. I think passing yards is there. The only one I don't think is approachable, frankly, is the completion Percentage. I mean Colt just. That was freaky.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
Bobby Burton
And, and I will say this different
Jerry Hamilton
style of offense, that's a big part of it.
Bobby Burton
Or Greg Davis and what he did with Colt and Greg Davis really, I thought for a five year run Greg Davis leaned into what his quarterbacks did best, better than anybody in the, in college football with, with the run of Vince and then Colts. I mean he really did a master job of leaning into what they did best once he figured it out. And so my point to anyone on that is passing yards, passing touchdowns, all that on the table for Arch, given the number of games, the, the negative would be this. The negative would be this. I, I just think that Arch is going to throw the ball downfield more and it has more weapons downfield than this. And that, that's nothing to take away from Jordan Shipley or, or Quan Cosby. But he, he's got a different number of receivers that can go deep for him.
Jerry Hamilton
I actually, I have a, I've had, I think I've had a weird take on this for a while. I hope Arch has a great season but doesn't break that record because I think Texas will be running the football better. Like if Sark is at 52 and a half percent run, 47 and a half percent pass. I think the better Texas runs the football, the less passing yards Arch will have. I actually think that's the best thing for, for this Texas team is I think the 34 touchdowns is definitely in play for sure. And I'm not saying the passing yards isn't in play, but I want Sark to be at 52 and a half run, 47 and a half pass. I think that means this offense is clicking and it's in, in everything's at Sark's disposal and they're running the football really well and that means they're running the football late. Probably have leads and games so you don't throw it quite as much. I think that might be the best scenario for Texas. Break the passing TD record. Break. Don't have 3, 859 yards. I'm talking about in the 13 game season here. You know, saying you go to SEC title game before a playoff, before a playoff because after that none of these numbers really calculate anymore the same way. But I actually hope Texas is, I think hopes we look up in November and sarks at 52 and a half percent run, 47 and a half percent pass. I think that's the best Texas team that they could have on the field that, I mean I don't want Arch to break records, by the way. I, I want Texas to be in the College Football Playoff and they're going to have to run the ball better.
Blake Monroe
All right, we actually need to talk about some records here pretty quick. I know we have to wrap up soon, but speaking of chasing records, guys, Landon Williams, callous, of course he's going to make his decision in less than 48 hours or a little more than 48 hours, I guess I should say. But he's chasing the record books. Jerry Hamilton in multiple categories.
Jerry Hamilton
Bobby, Bobby, this, this, this graphic means a lot like to, to guys like if, if you're in the chat and you've been following high school football in Texas for 30 years, if you've been in the business like Bobby and I have and you've watched a lot of these guys come through and when you think about Landon Williams callous playing it, Richmond Randall playing 5A football, playing really good teams, and I know high school football is a little more spread out because there's so many high schools in these days, but the numbers he's got through three years are really amazing. When you think about it, that he's playing at a 5A level like last year, Keegan Ash from Mount Enterprise broke the all time rushing record and he came close or 30 away in touchdowns, single season touchdowns, he broke that record. I'm not taking anything away from Keegan Ash. He's going to be a really good linebacker at Texas Tech, but it's not the same as playing 5A 6A football as a running back. So what Landon's done has been amazing, Bobby. And the number one thing with me, knock on wood for him, he hadn't missed the game. He's played 16 games two years in a row. His durability has been amazing with the schedule they've played. But look at the names guys in the chat on this career rushing records that he's going to pass this year. Robert Straight. Cedric Benson, Rodney Thomas. I mean if he has a healthy year, he's going to go up over 10,000. So he's going to get into. But just think about that. Center Vincent, Rodney Thomas, Robert Straight. Look at the names on their. Jacquist Rogers, by the way, is on this a couple of times, scored a lot of touchdowns. But this is a, a tremendous five A six A career for high school running back in the state of Texas. And this is through three years.
Bobby Burton
I gotta say this, he had 3, 500 yards last year, right? Russian.
Jerry Hamilton
Yep. 3,554 or something like that 35 something.
Bobby Burton
So if I'm my back of the envelope, you know, calculation 3, 800 gets him an all time record.
Jerry Hamilton
Yep.
Henry Melton
Yeah.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
He would be the career rushing yardage leader in the state of Texas, maybe in the country. Is that possible? I don't know.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
National record. But no 3, 800 yards. That's within. But man, that's a lot of tread on the tires as a senior. Do you want.
Jerry Hamilton
He's gonna have more on his plate because they lost some really good players off that thing. Okay, gotcha. Yeah. Somebody asked where Keegan Ash is. He's a freshman linebacker at Texas Tech. The other one that I thought was the stat that I think if he has that senior year, similar to junior year, he has 41100 yard rushing games. The state record is 51. Jonathan Gray. That, that would be a amazing consistency record when you're playing in a 5A 6A level. I mean if he broke that record, that, that would be something to me because they play really good teams and everybody is stacking the box on this guy. And if he ended up breaking that record, if he put together 11 more hundred yard games this year, even more, that would be a pretty, that'd be a pretty big record I think because when you do that at the 5A 6A level and obviously they're 5A, that's. That says a lot. That, that says a lot about your consistency as a runner. That means your instincts don't have an off day. That means your tackle breaking really don't have an off day. I mean that's pretty, that'd be pretty stellar. Greg Powell brought up Rodney Thomas. Man, was he Bobby, was he scary. And two A football at Groveton. I mean he ran pissed off
Blake Monroe
Jonathan Gray. He'll actually be joining us next Tuesday.
Jerry Hamilton
That's awesome.
Blake Monroe
Yep.
Bobby Burton
He, he will be 32 days from the start of college football.
Jerry Hamilton
That means. And that, that'll be interesting if the whole if for the podcast. If Landon Williams cows pick sexes Saturday, that's about 7pm if he does, that'll be a great conversation with Jonathan Gray. Because Jonathan Gray, you know, look, he had some injury issues coming out of high school. He carried the ball a lot at Alito. That would be a really good conversation with him about Atlanta. Williams cows. Somebody asked where's Adrian Peterson on those lists? He's not going to appear on those lists. I don't think he played his sophomore year in high school, was it Bobby? I'm pretty sure there was a year there where he had a little off the field or his mom shut him down or something with that recruitment. I can't remember. Was it his freshman or sophomore year? I can't remember.
Bobby Burton
He hadn't. He had a knee issue.
Jerry Hamilton
Yep.
Bobby Burton
That kept him out of track one semester or. One semester.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
Can't remember what it was.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah, yeah, there was something.
Bobby Burton
I mean, look, you don't have to. I will say this. You don't have to be in the
Jerry Hamilton
record books to be a great running back. No.
Bobby Burton
You know, nor does being in the rec books mean you are a great running back. You know, talking about Keegan Ash, he's already moving to linebacker for Texas Tech. So I. I just think it's interesting as you, Jerry, put the perspective in
Jerry Hamilton
it, you've been following.
Bobby Burton
I've been following high school football for 35 years plus. And when you start seeing guys approach these levels, especially on the 5A level, there's. There's something a little special going on there.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
And that's what Jerry's really trying to get at. And I agree with 100.
Blake Monroe
All right, before we get to our final question or two, Bobby, I need you to tell everyone one more time about the good folks over at Von Lane.
Bobby Burton
I can do it. You know what's wild? Airlines are now charging you $80 or more just for a seat assignment on their cheapest fares. How's that cheap? You buy a ticket and you don't even know where you're sitting until check in. Then they hit you for bags on top of that. At some point you have to ask yourself, what am I actually paying for? Von Lane doesn't play that game. Flat rate fares, no bag fees, no seat assignment nonsense. No TSA. You board at a hotel terminal, sit in one of 22 first class leather seats, and everything is included. Starlink, Wi Fi. That actually works. Snacks, drinks, hot towel service and meals on select departures. And big news. Von Lane Law is relaunching its Dallas to Oklahoma city route on September 8th with multiple daily departures seven days a week. Writers have been asking for this one and it's back. Whether it's business, family or Red river rivalry weekend, you can now book@vonlane.com Von Lane serves Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Plano, the Woodlands, Oklahoma City, Nashville, Memphis and Atlanta. Use promo code OTF26 for $20 off your first trip. That is Von Lane elevated regional travel. That's easy. Thank you, Von Lane, for your continued support of on Texas football. We appreciate you making things like every morning, every Thursday morning's coffee and football Possible.
Child
The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going for it? This exclusive place that dad has connections with. They've made more cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else. You have to put me in touch. What's it called? It's Dune Dial.
Jerry Hamilton
Where?
Child
Dune Dial. There's an accent on the E. Do you mean. Yes. I gotta undone deal cars. Lift, please. You going past Kimage? Oh, Kimmage. No. Done deal cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
Jerry Hamilton
I looked it up during a commerce or during Bobby's ad read. Peterson only played two years of varsity football, which is amazing for one of the greatest backs ever. He started high school at Westwood High, the other school in Palestine, then transferred over to Palestine High. But he. I don't think he played football as a sophomore. If the story that I heard was correct, I could be. I'm 51, so that could be wrong. But only played two years of varsity football, which is crazy for that talent level. Bobby ended up being number one player in America.
Bobby Burton
Some people that I know would get on to you that live in East Texas. Palestine.
Jerry Hamilton
Oh, Palestine. I'm actually.
Bobby Burton
That's the. That's the Middle East Palestine.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah. That was bad on me.
Bobby Burton
That's okay. There's been some names that I've. You know, it is.
Blake Monroe
All right.
Bobby Burton
All right.
Blake Monroe
The 40 acres ROLO is Jermaine Bishop Jr. The secret weapon in 2026 on offense
Jerry Hamilton
second half of the year, Bobby.
Bobby Burton
Yeah. Taste of him in the first half, full dose in the second. Is that what you're thinking, Jerry?
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, me too.
Jerry Hamilton
Like, I'm not sure how much we see him against Ohio State necessarily, because that seems to be an experience game. Maybe you work him in a little bit, but I think as the season moves along.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, I. I'm with Jerry on that. You just give him a taste, get him used to the speed of the
Blake Monroe
game
Bobby Burton
and then give him full throttle second half, maybe post ou. Because the one thing you don't want in O in the OU game is to be. For someone to be overwhelmed. And out there, that. That is a game that's just different. Now, I'm not saying Germaine Bishop would be necessarily overwhelmed. He may be one of those guys that, you know, his blood runs. His blood runs cool at all times. Right. Ain't handle anything. So I'm not trying to presuppose that on him, but that. That seems to be the game. I mean, I think Texas made a mistake by not playing Cedric Ben Benson earlier in his career. That game.
Jerry Hamilton
Yes.
Bobby Burton
Year as a freshman he was ready to handle it and didn't get the opportunity. So you could say that. But that's a different position than Germaine Bishop. I to Jerry's point, give him a taste in, in weeks one through five and let him, let him drink from a fire hose. Week six and on.
Jerry Hamilton
I. My belief on Bishop is he is gonna, when he gets his opportunity, he is going to make that play or two which is going to force his way on the.
Bobby Burton
Yeah, you just can't deny him.
Jerry Hamilton
You're not going to deny him. I mean, and I think, I think the biggest compliment that Jermaine Bishop Jr. Has had since he's been in Austin is he's worked at corner this summer. Like the only way that can happen is if he picked up the offense pretty quickly. You can't, you don't do that with a player unless you feel like, okay, he's going to play on offense. You only do that with a young player like that if you feel like he's grasped the system. That's Cedric Baxter stuff, that's Kelvin Banks stuff. So that's like the best compliment you could give Jermaine Bishop.
Bobby Burton
Yeah.
Jerry Hamilton
Go work out at the corner some this summer. Learn that system too, because you obviously already have the offensive one.
Blake Monroe
And we will do a follow up question to close from Marco. Marco says, have you all heard how well he run blocks? Will he be a liability or make the offense too predictable?
Jerry Hamilton
He's physical.
Bobby Burton
He's physical, but he's tiny, man.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah, he's tiny.
Bobby Burton
Was Xavier worthy? The thing. You don't necessarily need him to be a great blocker. You need him to be a willing
Jerry Hamilton
blocker as must stick your face in the fan. Just be willing to.
Bobby Burton
Yes. You don't because all you're looking for sometimes is just a hesitation moment on the outside. You don't. You're not actually looking for it. While it'd be great to say, oh, we want a sustained block on the edges, that that probably won't be Jermaine Bishop. He's 155, 160 pounds. This. It's likely unlikely to happen.
Blake Monroe
All right, guys, that is going to do it for this episode of Coffee and Football presented by Von Lane. We want to thank Von Lane along prize picks Warby, Parker, Shields and SeatGeek, all for sponsoring today's show. Of course, big thank you to Henry Melton for joining us. Talking a little Longhorn football as well. And Bobby, what's later today?
Bobby Burton
We got a bunch of stuff going on. I'm waiting on this vote from the SEC and Big Ten presidents. That's a big. That could be breaking news. Also, we have a couple of other programs here coming up on, on Texas football. Also we have on texasfootball.com guys, that message board's getting a lot, getting to be a lot of fun. Come join us, hang out, talk Texas football all day long. Jerry's over there with handling it and only the way Jerry can answer questions at times. So it's been a lot of fun the last couple weeks. But please join us. Also, we'll have more tomorrow. I think we've got another number 36 coming in the morning tomorrow morning, thanks to Kurt, courtesy of Blake Monroe. We won't, we'll, we won't say who it is yet, but the number 36
Jerry Hamilton
that we're all aware of, by the way, Blake, a stormy slap shot. Obviously a hockey fan has asked a few times, you think Houston can support an NHL team? Houston or Austin may be going to get in it. I think it all depends on where the arena is built. I think hockey, I think, I think Houston would take the hockey very well. I think it all, A lot of this stuff comes down to where is the arena built.
Bobby Burton
The one in Austin would be built likely at the Old Statesman headquarters is what I'm told if they, if they were to do anything. Hey, need to mention this before we leave Texas right now, trying to, we're trying to determine what the vote's going to be. Obviously, if there is a yay vote on this, we will likely have some immediate reaction.
Jerry Hamilton
Yeah.
Bobby Burton
On that.
Jerry Hamilton
Yes.
Blake Monroe
Well, we hope you all have a great day today. Of course, we'll be back same time, same place tomorrow morning. So for Bobby Burton and Jerry Hamilton, I'm Blake Monroe and we'll see you then.
Bobby Burton
Hook them Horns.
