Guys, Saturday night they were in dkr, not in full pads yet, but they were pretty aggressive, we're told. Went after it pretty hard. What did we hear? Let's start with some of the highlights of the players that we heard kind of stood out away from the rest, even though it was a very spirited practice. We heard. And the athleticism and overall talent continues to be talked about by multiple parties. Jerry, the one guy you want to talk about right off the bat.

Yeah, Rasheed Biles. We hear what he got the arch a couple of times, made a couple other plays. The least surprising thing I could hear from a Texas practice is Rasheem Biles was causing havoc. I mean, a guy that had 31 and a half tackles for lost 10 sacks, 15 pass breakups, 190 combined tackles the last two seasons, affecting football games and practices and creating havoc is the least surprising thing I could hear, but the most, the most expected thing at the same time. I just think, look, I have a pretty strong opinion on Rasheen Biles. I'm not saying the highest drafted player on the Texas roster because that's a totally different conversation. I'm not sure he's not the best pure football player. Like born to play football in the quandary digs in the quandary Diggs way. Like a guy that was just born to play football. He's just so instinctive. You could play him all over the field. You could probably play the guy at safety and get away with it on some level. I think he's just that good a football player. I just think he sees the game and reacts to the game different than a lot of other Guys do over

like a Colin Simmons, Jerry even, or, or, or is it because they kind of play different positions and Simmons is just an edge really getting after the quarterback, whereas Biles May. You could put him anywhere on the field.

[Jerry Hamilton]

That's kind of what I'm saying. Yeah, I mean, like, I just think B.S. i, I, you could probably play him at nickel, you could probably play him at safety again and get away with it because he just has the feel for football, right. You could play him a lot of places. You could, you could turn on and put him at X receiver and make a play on the ball. We've seen it on defense. He's just one of those guys that just knows how to play football and that, that's how Quandary Diggs was coming out of Angleton. We've seen other guys like that. They're nothing. That doesn't mean you're going to be the highest draft pick. But there's some guys who are just born to play this sport and just better at it.

You know, you can put them anywhere.

[Bobby Burton]

Hey, Jerry and C.J. i did get it. I want to add to it. I did get a text. On a team with a handful of incredible individual talents, dot, dot, dot. Biles just happens to be absolutely insane. Good. That's a, that's a text I got yesterday. Hey, C.J. who do you want to pick out of the lineup?

[CJ Vogel]

Yeah, if Jerry's talking about guys that were born to play football, this guy was built play football. He's just as scary. I mean, it's a guy that you, you see a photo of the guy and you're like, yeah, that looks like someone that creates havoc up on the, on the defensive line. And Friday he had a monster day, right? Forced a fumble, probably would have came away with multiple sacks. At the very least he had pressures on the quarterbacks. Follow that up with Saturday, another day where it was just difficult for offensive linemen or even tight ends. And we'll talk about that here in a minute. Having to stay in front of this guy and adding 290 pounds, that's a 22 pound increase from a year ago. He did not lose a step. In fact, it's probably made him significantly tougher to deal with in that front. So the next step is probably more consistency in terms of rush defense, believe it or not, in terms of what I've been hearing, because you have an offensive lineman going backward, having to block him consistently, it's difficult. Now what does that mean for him this fall? 20 to 25 snaps a game I think is reasonable. I don't know if he's going to be a guy that you see in all three, you know, three downs of a drive. Just given the size and experience Texas has already in the room, but he certainly is making his impact felt when Texas is passing the football. And again, good luck to whoever starts at left or right guard because they're basically being baptized by fire with Justice Terry at times.

Jerry, we both were told that he was just highly disruptive from the get go and got got in the backfield repeatedly.

[Jerry Hamilton]

And that's his ticket on this team. That is his ticket for early impact playing time on this team. You know, Ian Drafridge is gonna line up over the ball and take two. You know, Alex January and Murad Watson are going to play the run well. You know, Hero Canoe is going to do what he does. What is that spot for somebody to break through and earn playing time. It's being the disruptor. It's being the guy that can get in the backfield the quickest and be the most disruptive player. And I, look, I'm, I'm excited for justice, by the way, to have a, to see what he can be healthy. He hadn't been healthy since midway through his junior year when all these colleges around the country were, were heavily recruiting him and he became a five star prospect. He hasn't been healthy since that time. I'm excited for justice to be healthy and him to see what he can do and we can see what he can do because I don't think anybody's seen it for a while.

Fair stuff, Jerry. All right, look, Yalls highlights so far, obviously Rashim biles from Jerry, C.J. said Justice Terry, the guy I'm going to say is in single out is Melvin Ciani, the offensive tackle transfer from Wake Forest. Couple of different comments from different people yesterday. One, he likes to bury people or bury guys. That's what he's looking to do in the run game. Very aggressive, even though they're not full paths. Right? So they're still not full paths, but very aggressive. Also another guy said that he may be the meanest guy on the roster and likes to tell people about it a little bit. So yeah, I, I think that as we think about this offensive line, one of the key offseason moves that Steve Sarkeesian, Brandon Harris and those guys made was to bring in Siani and kick Brandon Baker inside. Okay. And they retained Connor Robertson and now what are they gonna. And they have obviously Trevor Goosby, who continues to be a tremendous player and tremendous prospect and likely a top 10 top 15 pick. What are they going to do about left guard? That's a, that is a real question and they've thrown everything in the kitchen sink at it and they will continue to we'll talk about that. But guys, the one that I heard may be the most pleasant surprise, even though they thought he was good when he came in, is Ciani. He's adding an anchor to this offensive line to go along with Brandon Baker to go along with Trevor Goosby. Those are going to be three high draft pick type of guys I think is what what I'm learning. I think they're going to be all three of them top three round guys, if not higher.

CJ Hearing about the meanness from Sioni, that is a very pleasant surprise. Texas life mean this A year ago they you couldn't be tough and and mean on the offensive line when you're getting your butt whipped for 60 minutes, right? So if that's something that can, you know, kind of rub off on the rest of the offensive line, I'm all for. But to hear that from a guy again who could have gone anywhere in the portal, who opted to join the Texas Longhorns and move from left tackle to right tackle and still carries that as a chip on his shoulder, I mean that is something that Texas again just did not have and probably hasn't have consistently on that offensive line. I look back to one specific moment for Kelvin Banks is freshman year against Oklahoma where he's driving a guy 15 yards down down the field. You hear the whistle and you sit there and you're like wait a minute, like you're in line for personal foul penalty. But it's like you need some of that, right? You need some meanness, some tough spirit and I don't think Texas has had enough of that over the last few years. Hear that from Ciani is fantastic for me.

Hey, I want to add Bobby on that Cam Williams really moved people in the run game, maybe more so than Banks did at times his year he started. That would be very welcome for this Texas run game is if that right tackle spot kind of went back in the run game to where it was with Cam Williams when you could really move people. Not that Brandon Baker wasn't a good player there, but that really wasn't his strength in his first year starting. Cam, if Ciani can move people the way Cam Williams could in the run game, that's going to be big for this Texas offense.

I get or Christian Jones the year before. I mean that was not Brandon Baker's good run blocker. That was not his. That was not his X factor as a player, though, to your point. And so I think that that's fair.

All right, we heard some other highlights I think we want to get to. C.J. i'm gonna start with you at tight end because while Michael Massunas is the big transfer in for Michigan State, Nick Townsend we've talked about, just really athletic, looks like a million bucks. Emory Winston or Amari Winston. Great hands. Spencer Shannon coming on a little bit, the senior from modern day high school in Santa Ana, California.

Yeah, it does sound like the light's starting to flick on for Spencer Shannon. And of course that's encouragement. We've seen bits and pieces of him. He's still looking for really that first real life, real game pass reception for the Longhorns, but we saw over 200 snaps for him a year ago, all of which as basically that inline blocking tight end. Now we're hearing his name a little bit more in the passing game. He had a really tightly contested reception on Saturday evening. He's made a few more plays. And now here's something that I think you hear about the tight ends a little bit more of is when KJ Lacy's on the field, I think he's a guy that looks towards his Tight ends a little bit more. Michael Massunas, his name has popped up a few times as well. You mentioned Amari Winston, I would say is in that conversation with a Khali Clocketer Cam Coleman for just the smoothest overall hands, which might be a surprise to some. And of course Nick Towns and his ability of just being a physical athlete. I think the tight end position is in line for more impact this year in the passing game and maybe that's just a more seasoned veteran quarterback that will help get the ball to them as well.

Yeah, we heard of good practice from the tight ends on, on Saturday night. Jerry, another guy that we heard had really good practice on Saturday night. Now, granted it was against the threes, but they seem to be trying to work in Cohen Brown, the freshman receiver out of Waxahachie on the deep ball. He had a couple of nice grabs apparently, and they're trying to throw the ball to him deep.

[Jerry Hamilton]

Yeah, I was told over the summer he will definitely be on special teams. Like, he is just one of those guys. He, he, he does all the right things. They've been very impressed with his work ethic. But then it comes that he's one of the fastest players on the team. I mean, what, Ryan? Yeah. Ryan Niblett. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and that's a pretty bold statement for a guy for Ryan Nibblett to make. He used to run 10, 5. Right. So I think Cohen Brown. I think one of the things Cohen can do is there is that possibility on this team to be a guy that is whose speed can be a decoy to open up things for everybody else. And if you're a team player, that's a, that's a role that could be important on a team. And you know, if you catch somebody napping and you whip it over their head, you do. But a lot of times a young guy like that, if he, he has that real speed and that powerful speed that shows up on tape, he can help clear area for others. So I think he, he could, he could work his way into a valuable role on this team outside of special teams, because I think there's about four guys and we're going to talk about those guys in a different video. We. There's about four guys right now that are staking their name to playing time outside of special teams in that freshman class.

Yeah, if I can add on Cohen. Yeah, just adding on Cohen. The big thing coming out of the spring was consistency with the hands. To hear that he's making plays vertically down the field after, I would say Just running past defensive backs is very encouraging because in the spring game we saw a drop or two and in spring practices we saw the ball hit the ground a couple times. Consistency with the hands is the best way that you can earn your way into that circle of trust. Wide receiver, because the speed alone is something that coaches look at and say, how do we incorporate this in our offense?

[Bobby Burton]

Got a couple other receiving notes I want to get to, but the other, one of the other highlights that I heard that I just want to mention real quick. Lance Jackson and Zena Umosolo, both of those guys, I was told by multiple people, again, they are the first off the bus, by the way. I mean, you put them next to Ian Draft or Jeffridge and you're looking at six, five, six, six. And you know, they're that's what, nine? That's almost a ton of people, right? Or no, excuse me, not a ton, but a thousand pounds of people with three guys. And I think that I, I really believe that those guys had tremendous practices. Based on what I'm saying, Xena continues to shine. I mean, he's, he's making some plays, apparently that are, you know, better than just your average guy. I mean, we've been talking about who's going to be the other pass rush guy opposite Colin Simmons. Probably him. All right, I want to go to some other guys real quick. I also mentioned receiver, and when I did, we talked about Colin Brown having a particularly good day. I heard that Emmett Mosley caught the ball extremely well on Saturday night and also moved, juked some people out of their, their, their, their socks a little bit on Saturday. And then Jermaine Bishop, also young freshman from Willis, Texas, had another clean quote, crisp practice as well. Have y' all heard anything more on the receivers?

Yeah, another name that got, you know, I'm not sure we're going to see a lot of him on the field this year necessarily, but it's a good sign for a getting mentioned behind the scenes. Chris Stewart, the freshman from Shadow Creek, he was mentioned in the spring as doing all the right things in the summer, again, is, hey, this guy's impressed every time we've watched him, every time we put eyes on him. And again, Chris Stewart's one of those guys. I mean, he's kind of going to fly under the radar in this recruiting class, but I had a pretty good moment or two in the Saturday scrimmage. Not running with the ones, of course, but just a name to keep an eye on in the future. Because when you start getting, when it Starts coming up multiple times from spring when you enroll to summer, now to fall camp. That means you're impressing a number of people so you got a chance long term.

Cj, you hearing about the. The viral catch of Cam Coleman that happened on Thursday's practice, by the way, but wasn't released until Saturday afternoon. But anything else on the receivers look

more consistency with Ryan Wingo was something that I think has been very evident through the first couple of practices. And again we talked about it in previous videos, but a number of these guys going out without gloves as Biden design, they want to feel the ball in their hands. They don't want it to be something that they take for granted and basically let the gloves do the catching for them. They want to see the ball through, think about the reception and then take that next step with the ball in their hands. So that is something that's been discussed throughout that wide receiver room. And you look at Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Jermaine Bishop, Cohen Brown, all these guys going out without gloves, it's really something to take note of.

Yep. All right, let's move on to the defensive line. We talked a little bit about Lance Jackson, we talked about Xenom Losalu, but there were a couple of lineup issues that we were discussing that people kind of threw at us. One was a big DE look, big defensive end look as well as a NASCAR package. The big DE look, it was pretty simple from what I was told. I think Jerry's told the same thing. Hero kanu.

Yeah.

And Justice Terry were both lined up at end like that's a three man front and you had two defensive tackles kicked out. Kano, by the way, continues to be a just solid player for the Longhorns. Very versatile, high motor, etc. A really great pickup a year ago from Ohio State out of the transfer portal. But just to scare the other one, see what you hear in the NASCAR package. That was interesting.

Well, you just mentioned how Texas might defend the run, right. Well in the passing game, Texas finding ways to get what I would anticipate being their three best defensive pass rushers off the edge all on the field together. Whether it's Colin Simmons, Lance Jackson, Xeno Mosulo on the field together with a rotating force. Right now, Hyo KANU is kind of that one piece. I would, I would imagine Justice Terry is going to be someone that factors in Marad Watson potentially as well. But that was the lineup that was pitched to me was those three. Colin Simmons, Lance Jackson, Xeno Moslo on the field together in pass rushing situations that feels like havoc waiting to happen. Not to mention who knows, whatever Sheen Biles could be dialed up to do behind them as well. But Texas certainly exploring different personnel options in what has become a very popular package, the NASCAR package over the last couple of seasons.
