Jeff Howe
All right, everybody. Welcome back to On Texas Football. Welcome to the Wednesday night live stream at On Texas Football. I am Jeff Howe broadcasting live from SEC Media days. We're actually at the SEC media party. It's the closing party for SEC Media days. And when I say we, I mean my colleague as Rod Babers has dubbed him the young prodigy of On Texas Football with yet a second party in a row. Second baller hat. See, CJ Vogel is gracing us with. Now, CJ before we go any further, and by the way, third member of our team, last but most definitely not least, lifetime Longhorn 2005 national champion Marcus Myers in his domicile. CJ and I are Raymond James Stadium. We're at the big. We're at the new sombrero. Sombrero is a hat. Speaking of hats, C.J. you got to tell the story about why we're trying to reverse the gin. The hat jinx that befell you this morning on your way to Media days.
CJ Vogel
Yeah.
Rod Babers
Yeah. For those that have been following, the fedora is gone. We.
Hank South
I didn't.
Rod Babers
I couldn't light it inside of SEC Media Days, but it should have Been lit on fire. We're done with it. We've moved on to the new one. If Krabby return to the beach. I love Tampa so far, but, boy, has it provided some interesting storylines this morning. Jeff, I was doing a radio call at 8, 8am didn't get to ride with you guys. Instead, called an Uber by myself, and, well, we ended up in a car accident. Never been in a car accident before. And my Uber tried to cross over four lanes of street traffic at once. He got through three, and then that last one, well, I don't know if he turned all the way around to realize what was going on, but wham, he got whacked. And that was an interesting afternoon. Sheriff. The Tampa Sheriff's Department was out. Tampa PD eventually made it. I've been getting calls from insurance and Uber, and, I mean,
Jeff Howe
that's the bad news. The good news is here at Raymond James Stadium, we're on one of the club levels for this party, and they've got like a. A custom hat bar. And, you know, I told cj, hey, to reverse the jinx, let's just do some good mojo, go get you a custom hat. Let's see what kind of lid you can come up with. So CJ brought Hank south, and I. A couple of patch options. This is what he went with. Marcus, what do you think of this? If Crabby returned to the beach is what C.J.
Hank South
went with.
Jeff Howe
I need your take on this.
Rod Babers
You know, it's.
Marcus Myers
It's a nice hat. What I heard from all of this is that CJ is suffering some ailments from his accident. He's still trying to recover. Right. There's. There's probably some permanent damage at play, and we'll likely need to, you know, have some consultations with some attorneys in the near future. That. That's what I took away from it all, Jeff. And. And I think as such, that probably plays into his. His hat choice. I. I don't blame him for what he chose.
Jeff Howe
Hey, CJ May need to dial up a friend of the channel. Adam Lowy. So maybe TJ needs to lob a call from all else Bills. Yeah. So we are at Raymond James Stadium, by the way, CJ can echo this City of Tampa, everybody that's been associated with media days. Tampa's a great city. I can see why they host Super Bowls. They know how to host people and throw a party. So props to city of Tampa. My first visit to Tampa, it gets the stamp of approval. I do like the fact that the Tampa Bay Bucks. Marcus. Are probably promoting the old school Bucko Bruce logo with the Creamsicle jerseys. So I'm looking behind me, I'm seeing their ring of honor, Mike Allstott, Doug Williams, some really, really good players from this Tampa Bucks. I, you know, you got Leroy Selvin in there. You got a Sooner. Obviously Baker Mayfield's mug is plastered all over the place, but that's a story for another day. A little bit of an abbreviated show tonight because we are a little crunch for time. So let's go ahead and jump into it. Chat is already live. If you got questions, comments, concerns, any grievances, whatever you got lined up in the chat. As always, super chats jump to the front of the line. So today at SEC media days, we had Alabama Earth from Caleb Deborah and players we had Florida John Sumrall really, really strong impression. I thought the new Florida head coach Pete Golding and Ole Miss were here and the last team to go today Texas A and M and Mike Elko and we were CJ was making the rounds. I was kind of stationary during the player breakouts in the main room and every other question to a Texas A and M player, it seemed like what about the Texas game? What about the Texas game? What about the Texas game? Marcus, you were a part of this rivalry. Now when you were in school, when you were in the Texas. At the time, the Oklahoma rivalry kind of took precedence because there was a lot more on the line in that game. But here we are renewing it after it was dormant for 12 years. 2 Texas, Texas A and M games. Twice there's been major SEC and college football playoff implications on the line. Obviously A and M, the fan base doesn't like two losses Texas but Marcus, this is we can get into this, but there hasn't been enough of this in the history of the Texas Texas A and M rivalry where you've got legit national championship implications on the line in game. I've always said Texas, Texas A and M represents everything good about the football culture in the state of Texas.
Hank South
There should be something on the line.
Jeff Howe
Marcus, when the Aggies in the Longhorns

Marcus Myers
Absolutely. And, and when you look at both of their schedules, particularly this year, I mean, you know, depending on how things go, it, it could certainly be an elimination game. And so I, I appreciated the fact that the young man that was questioned today, CJ that you had posted, you know, on, over there on X, I just appreciated the honesty of his response. Right. That it's a, it's a must win game to them, that it's, it's not lost on them that they've lost the last two. And so I, I, I was fine with, you know, hearing that in comparison to some other folks I've heard, you know, talking there at SEC media days that tried to, you know, go the opposite direction and downplay it pretty significantly. I, I, I think it's, you know, foolish to try to go at it from that standpoint. So I at least respect the young man for calling it how it was and, and you know, we'll certainly see what happens come November. I think I've made it pretty clear, you know, where I kind of fall on things as, as long as, you know, we're kind of looking at what we expect their current iteration to be with, you know, Holman Wiggins calling the plays and things of that nature. But even Elko didn't shy away from it. He said, hey, he has to take the next step, but I believe that he can. Right? So we'll end up seeing, you know, what ends up happening when it's all said and done. But I absolutely agree with you, Jess. We want something to actually be on the line regularly beyond just the bragging rights. And it looks like, you know, that's where we're headed for the foreseeable future.
Jeff Howe
C.J. i want to get your thoughts on this here in just a second, but producers, Matt, got a producer has a clip queued up. If I could talk right today. Thank you, Matthew. For you this clip ready. Obviously during his main press conference again the Aggies were asked about Texas all day. And during his main press conference, Mike Elko was asked about the Texas game. This is his response.
CJ Vogel
No, I don't probably have a day go by without being reminded how important that game is to me, but that's okay. I, I think that's what's what's great about college rivalries is the passion that our fan base has for that game and certainly is matched by their fan base for that game as well. I think not only because of the rivalry, but also because of the status of both programs. I think it would be naive to not say that we put a little bit of extra work into preparation for that game because you know that game inevitably is going to mean an awful lot. It has for the last two seasons, not just because of the proximity and the rivalry, but because it seems to have playoff and SEC championship implications as well. And so when you put all of that into that game, it certainly makes a little bit of sense to give it some extra preparation.
Jeff Howe
So, C.J. i want to get your take on this because I, I went and crunched some numbers and you know, for all the resources and the tradition that both Texas and Texas ain't in can tell. Last season was only the seventh time in the AP poll era that Texas and Texas A M finished in the top 15 in the AP poll in the same season. It's only the second time in the AP poll era where both teams finished in the top 10 team, the top 15 and recorded double digit wins. And I'm working on a piece on this. We're on Texas Football.com but CJ it's crazy to think and I can get the numbers with Texas ou, I crunched some Iron bowl numbers. I'm looking at the state of Florida. Again. If this is, if this is what football culture in the state of Texas is all about, where it is now needs to be the norm. It doesn't need to be the exception of the rule.
Rod Babers
Absolutely. And I think it will remain as such. I think both Texas and Texas A and M in the current landscape of the SEC are positioned to be in contention to be SEC title appearance Teams, I think they're both positioned to be teams that contend for the college football playoff. And Jeff, Marcus, you all talked a lot about Texas and Texas A M for four years. Marcus, you played in, right? These schools, fan bases, they don't like each other, but that's what makes a rivalry special. And I think just like it is with Texas and Oklahoma when. When each team is good together, that game is so special.
Jeff Howe
Right.
Rod Babers
The hatred is there, the vitriol is there. The emotions, the, the. The. The moments that you talk about for decades and generations are there. And I talked about it with you a little bit. And, and Hank, Jeff, this week, the one rivalry that has a lot of emotions, it has a lot of history. But over the last 20, 25 years, as long as I can remember being a college football fan, that I just don't care about, despite the two fan bases not liking each other, it's Florida, Georgia. Why? Yeah, about 20 years ago, Florida was really good in Georgia wasn't. And then about halfway through, it flipped. Florida's been really bad and Georgia's been absolutely dominant. And so when you hear about just how much the schools hate each other and all of the passion that goes into it and you watch games that's 48 to 20, you're like, well, that wasn't very fun. And it happens year and year and year and year again. You're like, well, this isn't really exciting at all. Why should I get four? So for this rivalry to come back and for the implications at the end of the year to be like, hey, you can go to the SEC championship or you can go make the playoff as a result of winning this game for both teams. I think it's absolutely fantastic.
Jeff Howe
Yeah, I want to get into some numbers, Marcus. I want to get your thoughts on, again, some numbers that I crunched, and we'll do that here in just a little bit. On the other side of giving a shout out to one of our sponsors, let's shout out our lead sponsor for the Wednesday night live stream. That's Andy Ludicky and my perfect franchise. But if you've got a desire to take control of your destiny, call Andy or email him@andyperfectfranchise.net and that's andy perfect franchise.net and we want to thank Andy Ludicky and my Perfect Franchise for sponsoring the Wednesday night live stream here at On Texas Football. Marcus, Just to put it in perspective again, I mentioned last year it's on the seventh time in the AP Pole era since 1936, the Texas of Texas A and M finished in the top 15 with the AP poll. I still can't believe that. Marcus I found 10 times since 2001 where Texas and Oklahoma in the same season won double digigit games and finished in the top 15. That has been a more competitive rivalry. And I think what it boils down to is you look at the history of the two rivalries, there has been more times where Texas and Oklahoma have had a have had the right coach in place at the same time, whether it was Barry Switzer and Darrell Royal, Fred Akers and Barry Switzer, Mack Brown and Bob Stoops. I think maybe, you know, now with Steve Sarkeesian, we'll see what happens with Brent Venables. But more often than not it's worked out that way. If you look at it the other way, there's been too many times where Texas has really had it going with the right guy, whether it was Darryl Royal, Fred Akers or Mac Brown and A M didn't have the right guy or the coach was at the tail end of his tenure or whatever the case. So Marcus, I ask you for the before the long haul, do you feel like and I know college football coaches now in 2026 have a much shorter shelf life than they did 10, 15, 20 years ago. But let's say for the next three to five years, let's just to take that crunch. Do Texas and Texas A and M have the right coaches? With Sark at Texas and Mike Elko at Texas A and M, do they have the right coaches to keep this going to where they're going to meet Thanksgiving weekend with something at State?
Marcus Myers
I I would like to think so, man. I certainly hope so. And it feels like they do. The reason why I I guess the jury is still out a little bit for me on Elko is I I again, I'm not sold on Holman Wiggins. Maybe he has something there that he knows that we don't, right? And so he has an eye for maybe who the right next guy should be and ways to replace some of what he's lost on his staff. And so if in fact he is proven right, then I would think that would probably be my one criticism of Elko to this point, with respect to kind of his judgment right now prior to the season, I'm of the camp that he's. He made a bad call there right now. Whether or not the season proves that out to. To be accurate or not, it remains to be seen. But I, I think if you were to just go ahead and assume that both remained in place for the next three to five years, I can still guarantee that he's going to have solid defenses. They, they both have the resources behind them to go out and get the pieces that they feel are appropriate for the schemes that they're trying to run. And so they do seem like a really good fit. And as much crap, you know, we give Elko, I'll be honest. I was, I was, you know, kind of in the camp when he got hired. Like, dang, I wish they had gone the other route. I wish they hadn't run the other guy off. Right. I wish that, you know, the, the Stoops hire had actually gone through as opposed to it being Elko, because I, you know, I think Elko is a good ball coach. And so, you know, regardless of what, you know, colors he's wearing and things that he says at times to kind of speak to his fan base, I do respect him as a ball coach.
Jeff Howe
C.J. i'll get your thoughts on that. I want to get the Marcus brought up home and Wiggins, and we can talk about that, too, because it's always interesting when you have a coordinator opening. Do you go national search? Do you go internal hire? And we've seen it work and not work both ways, but I said I was kind of with Marcus when Texas A and M hired Mike Elko. Not that you were dreading it or anything from a Texas standpoint, but it's like I felt like he was exactly what Texas A and M needed. Like, they've tried, like, they, they tried kind of the. The it higher with. With Kevin Sumlin and long ago Marcus, when in your day, Dennis Franchione was that higher. Like, people forget there was a time where the Alabama head coach left to take the Texas A and M job and everybody's like, yeah, that makes sense. I can see why you do that. Like, it was a different world back in 2003, but that's where it was. They've tried that higher. Like, they've gone with, you know, they try to go the NFL route with Mike Sherman. That didn't work. That I said, you know, Kevin Sullivan was kind of in hire. They went for, like, the overly proven, the guy with a Pretty much flawless resume and Jimbo Fisher that didn't work. I just felt like C.J. hiring Mike Elko, it's just kind of what A and M needs. And I think if they're going to be successful, that's. They need to race, they need to embrace. Look, it's no frills. It's, it's tough, hard nose football. And you just got a ball coach, man. There's nothing, there's nothing about Mike Elko that screams flash or pizzazz. He, he's just a ball coach.
Rod Babers
That's it. That's what they needed. Especially after what was the circus with Jimbo and guys just running right well, driving wild. Right. You know, it's, it's one of those things where there, there was no law and order in a room in which ever evolving world of nil and transfer portal. You needed some sort of disciplinarian to sit there and say, hey, if you're going to be here, you need to be here.
Hank South
Right?
Rod Babers
You need to be locked in. You need to be invested in what you're doing. I think that's exact. Every time I hear Mike Elko speak, more and more of me just goes, I want more like, I want to hear more about this guy. Like he's, he says the right things and he doesn't say it, I think in a, in a corny way or a way that's dishonest and that's something that I think A and M is, is in for the long haul in a good position for Marcus. I, I did want to piggyback off of what you were saying because I do think Texas and Texas A and M are head coach wise, very well positioned for the, for the immediate future. And I think Texas at its coordinator's position, very well positioned for the immediate future. I don't know if I, I, I think I agree with you. I don't know if A M is with Holman Wiggins and, and, and Elko talked about that a little bit today saying hey, he's got to take the step as a first time play caller. Well, and he said that AM had a national search for its offensive coordinator. If your offensive coordinator after a national search ends up just being the wide receiver coach in your own building who's never called players before. I gotta wonder how far that national search actually extended beyond just Brian College Station. So.
Home Store and More Advertiser
Right.
Rod Babers
It's my concern if I was an A M fan is, you know, my quarterback's already a little bit limited when it comes to throwing against grand great teams, good defenses Now I'm relying on a guy that's never called plays before to be the magic fixer. I don't. I'd be nervous right now.

Marcus Myers
Yeah, and especially in a year like this, right. Like I mean we, we've seen kind of the, the conversation across the different socials and over at on Texas football and you know, any number of the sites and stuff. It's like you as Elko and an A and M program like you can't go03 against Texas yet. I don't see that being a less likely outcome right now.
Hank South
Right.
Marcus Myers
Like if you just, even if you. Beyond Holman Williams. Yes. I like their wide receiver core. I don't believe their offensive line is better. You know they went out and yeah, they got some pieces but I don't, I don't think there were, you know, pieces that necessarily everybody in the country was after and you know they played, you know, some ball. But were they on the best of teams? Not necessarily. And I know you can point to some of that when it comes to some of the guys Texas grabbed as well. But at Least those guys were kind of universally identified to some degree as within the top five at their position.
Hank South
Right.
Marcus Myers
That were available in the portal. Right. All conference folks. You know, you even had in a. Lawrence Seymour. I know one of the publications, as much as I kind of joke about it, had him as an All American. So it's like, you know, there was something a little different there. And then again, I don't see. I think they're still going to have a really good defense, but it's hard for you to convince me that they're going to have a better pass rush than last year. So it's. When you kind of put all these components together, it just makes me question, you know, was this the right timing to just kind of rely on what was already in the building? And. And as urgent as they are talking about it, I don't know if the actions that I saw this off season for them line up with that.
Rod Babers
I, I wanted to rewind a little bit because I'm all on board with the A and M discussion right now.
Jeff Howe
Right.
Rod Babers
And of course we heard from Oklahoma on Monday, but with Texas talking tomorrow, I wanted to get both of Yalls thoughts. Marcus talked to the media. You become a media member. Jeff, you've been in the media for much longer than I think I've been alive.
Jeff Howe
Right. Maybe too long. Thank you for reminding me.
Rod Babers
Sorry. But we, We've seen it both ways now with your biggest rival.
Hank South
Right.
Rod Babers
Taylor Wine at Oklahoma said, hey, it's just one of 12 games when you play Texas. And now we hear it from Damien Sanford, the linebacker at A M, saying, hey, that's a must win game if we want to win the SEC championship game or if we want to make it to the College Football Playoff. I'm gonna go with Colin Simmons here tomorrow. Hypothetically, we're gonna hear from him tomorrow afternoon. Which angle, which direction would you rather hear from him about playing A M or Oklahoma it's just another game or, hey, that's a game I know I'm gonna have circled because it means that much to me. My fan or the fans of Texas, our program and their program, that thing means something to me. I'd like to get Yalls thoughts on it because I certainly have mine.
Jeff Howe
I. I think it. I think it depends. I think it depends on which rivalry supersedes the other. I think it depends on who you ask. Like for me, it'll. I think it'll always be Oklahoma for me. And that's no disrespect to Texas A M, but while I've been kind of actively involved in following Texas. The Oklahoma games always had more riding on it, like in, you know, again, during Marcus's tenure at Texas. Talk about where A and M is in relation to Texas. That's where Texas was with Oklahoma. Like, it's like, oh, you won 11 games. That's nice. Now go beat Oklahoma. Oh, you. You guys won a Rose Bowl. That's great. Yeah. Now go beat Oklahoma if you want to do something good. So that it's the rolls reversal. I. I would say I don't as far as what Colin Simmons is going to say. That's why I love hearing from Colin, because sometimes we don't know what he's going to say. But I think maybe for the guys right now, Marcus, I think probably the A M game means more because, let's face it, like, the last couple of games against Oklahoma have not been very competitive. And again, you go back to the stakes against A M, and I think now that the rivalry's back again, we're seeing part. I talk about football culture in the States. You know, Oklahoma recruits a lot of guys from Texas, but when it's Texas and Texas A M, you probably grew up with those guys.
Hank South
Those guys are from your town, they're from your neighborhood.
Jeff Howe
Like, you went to camps with those guys. You played against those guys in high school. So the A M. The A M rivalry, I think, for some players has had a different meaning.
Hank South
I think right now, if you ask
Jeff Howe
the Texas players, honestly, I think they'd probably tell you A M is a bigger deal than Oklahoma.
Marcus Myers
Yeah. And. And, you know, Jeff, I agree with you. I also would say, you know, to C.J. you know, your question around. What do I want to hear from Colin? Honestly, I don't care. Colin has. I think that's where it's. It's. It's, you know, it's like there's levels right in. In everything and in. In every, you know, realm, whether it's in, you know, the corporate ladders, sports, you name it. Like, Collins kind of earned his keep already. And. And at any turn, he's always backed up anything he said on the field. So whatever he feels like going out there saying, I'm fine with, because I don't have any questions about whether or not he's going to back that up, you know, come October or. Yeah, come October, come November. Now, on the flip side of that, the. The. The kid from OU that says, you know, it's just one of 12 games, I promise you, a couple of guys are going to plant him on his back, and they're going to say to him as he's, you know, getting up off the ground, just 1 to 12, right? So, like, situations like that, you're kind of. You're kind of giving an opponent a little bit of fuel when it's one that's already dominated you the last several years. On the, on the flip side of that, I don't think anybody from A and M gave bulletin board material this year. And I think that's a stark difference from who they brought last year, which is kind of what brought Colin a little bit out of pocket for, you know, maybe some people's opinion is like, wait a minute, who are. Who are you to be talking this way? And then once it goes out there and happens, you know, the way it did on the field, then. Then it makes it even easier. So I'm fine with whatever angle Colin Simmons chooses to take because I don't have any concerns about his ability to back it up on the field.
Rod Babers
Yeah, what was it, two years ago in Dallas? We heard from offensive lineman Trey Zone and linebacker at the time, and I think both, you know, to. To kind of summarize their times on the podium, said, I don't like anybody at Texas. I don't mess with them. I don't talk to them. I wanna. I want to beat them. So no bullets and board to that extent this year. Obviously, I think players from both sides would agree a must win is basically how you would categorize that game.
Jeff Howe
So for those just tuning in, I've seen some questions about the chat. CJ and I are at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, home of the Tampa Bay Bucks. Tom Brady took the field, that grass right there behind me. Tom Brady played there at one point. So, yeah, we're here for the future
Rod Babers
UFC or WWE wrestler Tom Brady.
Jeff Howe
We ain't got enough time left in the show or the broadcast at all. Talk about that. This is the media party for SEC media days. It's kind of their closing party, kind of the going in party tomorrow. Texas is the very last team to go at SEC media day, so we'll talk about that throughout the show. Again, questions, comments? You got them? Get them lined up. Super chats, as always, jump to the
Hank South
front of the line.
Jeff Howe
Right now, we need to thank another one of our sponsors here on the
Hank South
Wednesday night live stream and give a
Jeff Howe
shout out to prize picks. Y' all know we're always looking for ways to make watching games a little more fun. And that's exactly why we at on Texas football love prize picks It's America's number one sports picks app and honestly, it's about as good as it gets. Player Picks. All you got to do is choose more or less on a few player stats and lock in your lineup. Seriously, it's all you got to do. And if you're someone who likes picking teams instead of individual players, Prize picks
Hank South
as you cover there too, you can
Jeff Howe
now pick the winner, the spread or the total on games and even fights. Prize Fix is available in most states, including Texas, California and right here where CJ and are at in Florida. So chances are you can jump in today. And one of my favorite features is that you can follow users on the app. If you like the pitch they're making, you can tail them with one click. And you can follow your friends picks too if you want to. Now here's the best part about price picks. If you've never tried prize picks before, play your first $5 lineup. And if you win, you'll get $150 in bonus lineups.
Hank South
Just make sure you use the code
Jeff Howe
HMA when you sign up. They actually just updated this offer, so there's never been a better time to get started.
Hank South
Download the Prize Picks app, use the
Jeff Howe
code hma, play that first five dollar
Hank South
lineup and if you win, you'll get a hundred and fifty dollars in bonus lineups.
Jeff Howe
That's Prize picks, code hma. Good luck with that. And as always, please remember to play smart. Play responsibly. Play Price Picks. All right, we've got, see, we got some questions, some questions we got. We want to get lined up actually. Cj, can you take over for just a second? Matthew, if you'll take me off screen for just a second.
Rod Babers
Yes, put me in charge. This is Sandman's worst nightmare. But Marcus, I mean, Media Days is what Media Days is, right? It's. We come out here, we hear from three players from every school, every coach, and it's basically just fodder until fall camp begins. I did. Did y' all ever, you know, when, when you were in the locker room, did y' all ever pay attention to what happened at Media Days? I mean, is that something that just in the new age of, you know, Twitter, Instagram, it's just kind of magnified more than it ever has been? Or was that something that, hey, y' all came into the locker room when fall camp began? So, hey, did y' all see what kid at Oklahoma State or Kansas said about playing Texas this year?
Marcus Myers
Yeah, typically it wasn't near as spicy. You know, you didn't have Social media, Twitter wasn't really a thing at that point, so stuff didn't, you know, get. Get didn't spread as quickly and. And you didn't have near the number of people covering it. So it. It really wasn't as much a part of, you know, kind of what we had to deal with.
Rod Babers
So I. I figured not. Of course, what we're doing now talking about it is only going to amplify it going further, but it was interesting. And Marcus, one school that's back on the Texas schedule this year, we got to hear from John Sumrall in Florida. He said it was a little weird that Texas is playing Florida for the third straight time and Florida, Tennessee is not on the schedule for the Gators. I'm not sure how much you were able to hear from Sumrall this afternoon, but I sit here saying, that's a team that I don't want to see again. I think Florida is a team that all goes well, nine, maybe 10 wins again, that is best case for me with that team. But I thought he killed it whenever he spoke earlier.
Marcus Myers
Yeah, I've quickly become a fan, man. I listened to a little bit of his stuff, you know, when he had been announced as the coach. But I think, you know, he. He's fully embraced it. When we kind of talk about a coach, you know, we're talking about Elko earlier, that fits. It seems like he perfectly well, does fit that. And so, you know, it. It's. He's not a guy that I want to, you know, have to encounter much. I think he's, you know, going to be able to kind of rally that fan base. Well, he's. He's talked a lot about how, you know, growing up, I think he had a. A pretty good quote around. Like, he only knew of, like, three conferences. It was like the afc, the NFC and the sec. Right. Like, that strikes every chord with what a Florida fan wants to hear, you know, and you imagine that if he can produce the results on the field, that's certainly one of those fan bases that'll get behind him.
Jeff Howe
All right, so they have actually closed
Hank South
off the stadium, so C.J. is going to have to get back inside. I'm back inside. We're probably going to have to wrap this up, so. I do apologize for the abbreviated live stream. Hey, we will be live. No, no. Evening live stream Tomorrow. We will be live, though. After Steve Sarkeesian's press conference, we will be live from SEC meeting with live reactions to the press conference. So before we're done here, I do want to thank another one of our sponsors, one of our last sponsors. It is long time On Texas Football sponsor Laura Baker Lower sponsors Football Theory here on the channel is also sponsoring the Wednesday night live stream. This edition of On Texas Football is

Jeff Howe
All right.
Hank South
Yeah, I think point oh I do want to mention before we get out of here, Marcus and I want to get your thoughts on this. So Cole Hudson, we do have a Cole Hudson update as far on his on the process he's going through to get that year of eligibility back as part of the the age based lawsuits we're seeing against the ncaa. Bobby Burton reported this over on Texas Football a little before six o' clock center, I said according to the source, the court is granting a temporary restraining order and setting an injunction hearing. So the first part of the process for Cole Hudson is a thumbs up. If he receives an injunction similar to what the men's and women's college basketball players received, he would be available to play for Texas this season. So Marcus, haven't gotten your thoughts on this, but Cole Hudson seeking that extra year of eligibility based on again how the NCAA was kind of loosey goosey with their wording and their age based eligibility plan. You look bad and different. What do you come out on Cole

Marcus Myers
I'm probably indifferent, leaning more towards good, right? Like I think it's, it's an extra piece that the offensive line has the ability to work with. It's somebody that has a lot of experience even if it's, you know, in, in certain instances just helping to be another coach in the room. But it's someone that you know, you know, you can certainly use and if he's able to compete and win a particular spot, then you know, good on him. But you know, I think especially when you have 105 scholarships and this being something where it's, you know, a bit more clear cut and it kind of makes sense for the sense or for an instance in which you would try to, you know, file for an injunction being that he was a player that, you know, came in 2022 and you know, essentially just looking for his fifth year. I'm not mad at it. And so nine game SEC season, you know, playing against Ohio State, trying to go all the way deep into January so that, you know, they, they can hoist one in Vegas for the national championship. You're going to need parts and you're going to need depth. That's quality and that has experience and so if anything, you know, for certain that, that he would be able to bring that to the table. So I'm not mad at it. Young man's been working on his NBA so I imagine he's been around Austin and keeping in shape and would, would, you know, not necessarily be asked to start from day one, but potentially could be someone you would need at some point in the season. So I'm completely fine with it and good on him. Look at CJ over there. What do you have?
Hank South
Yeah, we, we have been kicked out of the stadium proper but the media party is still going. CJ and Hank south and I are up here. Hey, just want to thank Everybody for hanging out in the chat. We tried to do something cool for you guys. We thought it was cool. We were inside the big sombrero from the stands. But we have been told that we can no longer broadcast from that location. So that unfortunately is going to force us to cut short the live stream. But again, programming on for tomorrow, there will be no, no evening live stream. We will go live, however, probably around around 3:30. It's all going to depend on what time starts press conference is done. But we will go live around 3:30 Central once Stark is done with reactions not just from start, but from Arch Manning and Trevor Doosby and from Colin Simmons at SEC media days. Marcus, to wrap this up, give me one thing. And again, as at media days, you're probably, hopefully you don't hear something outlandish, something that goes viral. Give me one thing you want to hear. Marcus, from the Texas contingent at media.
Marcus Myers
I think, you know, if it's from Sark, ideally, that the bulk of the guys, if not all of them, are either ready to go or will be in two weeks when fall camp kicks off. You know, so I always am just, you know, hoping that you get through the spring as unscathed as possible, which largely they did. They were just able to, you know, get a few guys to have some, you know, cleanup surgeries and that kind of thing. So I'm hoping to hear from him that everybody's raring to go and, you know, I guess it'll just kind of depend on some of the questions that are thrown at Adam. You know, obviously Arch will get, you know, the most attention and it seems like he is much more comfortable, you know, in his own skin and his own role. I think he's actually gone out there and. And probably done what he felt he needed to do last year before all the praise was heaped on him, which was, you know, kind of go out there and earn the right to represent the team in the way that he has. And so I just look, you know, to kind of hear from all three of them, you know, where they feel they are, you know, individually, but as a team as well, since I think unequivocally those three are probably some of your, if not, you know, top three leaders on that team. So probably just more about, you know, how they're feeling about the camaraderie around the team. I think I saw that they were like, you know, going back and forth, arching Colin on social media today because they were on campus doing like a scavenger hunt. And so you like to see that kind of good natured ribbing between, you know, the teammates, and hopefully you just kind of see that shine through during the media availability portions tomorrow.
Hank South
Marcus, I want to get one more thought for you, but we got to bring this up in cb. Cb, mentioning not only as Raymond James Stadium in the Bucks franchise. It's been on the. I mentioned Tom Brady, our guy Roy Miller was a member of the Bucks. One of my favorite players, Mike Allstott. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of those teams Rod Babers did spend a portion of his NFL career with. So, yes, Mike Tomlin was Rod's DB's coach when he was with the Bucks. So, yes, Rod Babers is a proud Tampa Bay buck. Marcus, this will kind of be our parting shot here. Did you hear Mike Elko when he was talking about motivation for the Aggies? He said, yeah, yeah, show them our trophy case. It's empty. That's how you keep them hungry immediately. I know if that is gonna get cut and taken out of context and misused and abused to the nth degree between now and the time that game is played.
Marcus Myers
Yeah, absolutely. But I mean, again, he just kept it 100 on it like he. He was. He was honest. You know, it's not something that he can run from. I appreciate the fact that he's not about trying to claim any of their mythical, you know, championships necessarily. And, you know, if you're a player, I mean, you want to change that narrative. And so, you know, to me, I think it was the perfect way, you know, to be able to answer it. And it was probably very sincere. You know, there was times in which before, you know, we had won it all, coaches would tell us, hey, you know, it's great that you're winning 10 games. That doesn't mean anything. Right. And to your point, Jeff, if you're struggling with OU or. Or, you know, whatever the case may be, like, until you hoist it, it doesn't really matter. And so I think that was kind of the root of his message. I suspect that it's a bit more brutal, even behind closed doors, you know, with his team, to make it clear to them that, you know, hey, for all the money, for all the accolades, for all the. The attention that you get, it's all for not if you don't go out there and produce. So I agree. I'm sure, you know, our fan base, the OU fan base, probably even the Tech fan base will have a lot of fun with that. But I think it was just an honest answer. And for me one that I appreciated because it didn't have any frills to it. It didn't seem like he was posturing or trying to placate in any kind of way. He was just calling it for what it is and at the end of day just stating some facts.
Hank South
All right, that's going to do it for the Wednesday night live stream. CJ's off camera but he's still wearing his baller hat with the if I'm crabby, if crabby returns to the beach patch. He's not taking that off. We need to again, we need to reverse the curse, get some good mojo going. Hey, thanks everybody for hanging out in the chat tonight. Thank you for your questions, comments, everything that if we didn't get to you, you can direct it to the guys bright and early tomorrow morning at cost. Me and football again, big day from here in Tampa, Texas tomorrow and SEC is the long ones and the last game to go. And again we'll be live from Tampa from SCTV today after Steve Sarkeesian press conference around 3:30 Central is when that's going to take place. Marcus, thanks for the time, the knowledge as always, huge thank you to Matthew behind the scenes for producing it. Thank you our sponsors tonight, Andy Nun, my perfect franchise, our lead sponsor. Shout out to prize picks and shout out to Laura Baker. If you're not a member over on texas football.com you want more on the Cole Hudson news we just talked about. You want more from SEC media days? We've got it over on the site. Our live, our live stream duties, I think for the most part are done this week. I will probably be on CJ myself, Hank, one of us will be on tomorrow talking Steve Sarkeesian reactions. We'll sort all that out tomorrow. But until then, again thank you everybody so much for hanging out. Until then, for Marcus, for cj, for Matthew, for the entire on Texas football staff, I'm Jeff Howe. Thank you so much for watching and listening. Until next time, welcome, welcome, welcome to

Host: Jeff Howe (with CJ Vogel, Rod Babers, Marcus Myers, Hank South)
This episode of "On Texas Football" was broadcast live from Tampa during the closing party at SEC Media Days. The roundtable—Jeff Howe, CJ Vogel, Rod Babers, Marcus Myers, and Hank South—dives deep into the renewed Texas-Texas A&M rivalry in the SEC, the stakes for both teams, leadership at both programs, and key takeaways from press interactions, especially Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko’s candid comments about expectations and his now-viral "trophy case" quote. There’s also discussion on the current Florida program, and updates on Texas player eligibility.
"Tampa’s a great city. I can see why they host Super Bowls. They know how to host people and throw a party. So props to city of Tampa. My first visit to Tampa, it gets the stamp of approval."
— Jeff Howe (04:52)
"There hasn't been enough of this in the history of the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry where you've got legit national championship implications on the line in-game... I’ve always said Texas-Texas A&M represents everything good about the football culture in the state of Texas."
— Jeff Howe (07:12)
"I think it would be naive to not say that we put a little bit of extra work into preparation for that game because you know that game inevitably is going to mean an awful lot... it seems to have playoff and SEC championship implications as well."
— Mike Elko (10:36–11:27)
"I found ten times since 2001 where Texas and Oklahoma in the same season won double-digit games and finished in the top 15. That has been a more competitive rivalry."
— Jeff Howe (14:08)
"As much crap we give Elko, I’ll be honest. When he got hired, like, dang, I wish they had gone the other route…because I think Elko is a good ball coach."
— Marcus Myers (16:24–18:04)
"There's nothing about Mike Elko that screams flash or pizzazz. He's just a ball coach."
— Jeff Howe (18:04–19:24)
"If your offensive coordinator after a national search ends up just being the wide receiver coach in your own building who's never called plays before, I gotta wonder how far that national search actually extended beyond just Bryan-College Station."
— Rod Babers (19:46–20:56)
"You probably grew up with those guys. Those guys are from your town, they're from your neighborhood...the A&M rivalry, I think, for some players has had a different meaning."
— Jeff Howe (26:51–26:58)
"He’s fully embraced it. When we kind of talk about a coach…that fits, it seems like he perfectly does fit that."
— Marcus Myers (33:06)
"...you're going to need parts and you're going to need depth that's quality and that has experience, and so if anything…he would be able to bring that to the table."
— Marcus Myers (37:37)
"Yeah, show them our trophy case. It's empty. That's how you keep them hungry."
— Mike Elko (reported by Marcus Myers, 41:34)
"He just kept it 100 on it...I think it was just an honest answer. And for me one that I appreciated because it didn’t have any frills to it. It didn’t seem like he was posturing or trying to placate in any kind of way. He was just calling it for what it is and at the end of day just stating some facts."
— Marcus Myers (42:25)
Mike Elko’s SEC Media Day response on the Texas game
"It would be naive to not say that we put a little bit of extra work into preparation for that game because you know that game inevitably is going to mean an awful lot...it seems to have playoff and SEC championship implications as well." (10:36–11:27)
On the rivalry’s shift in weight
"Now that the rivalry's back...when it's Texas and Texas A&M, you probably grew up with those guys. Those guys are from your town, they're from your neighborhood. You went to camps with those guys. You played against those guys in high school. So...for some players [it] has had a different meaning." — Jeff Howe (26:51–26:58)
Mike Elko’s trophy case quote
"Yeah, show them our trophy case. It's empty. That's how you keep them hungry." (41:34, reported by Marcus Myers)
