This is going to happen at some point, so you might as well wrap your head around it.

Yeah, no, I, it's definitely coming. I mean, you don't move the SEC logo. Oklahoma did it as well. Texas moved it to right here on the jersey. It just opens up space for that patch that, as we've talked about, it's, it's coming, right? So who will it be? When will it be? That's going to be interesting. I had someone reach out today who works in a Division 1 front office familiar with the Longhorns and said, look, whatever deal Texas has with Nike, it is written in the contract at the moment that whatever is paid from this company to Texas would come out of that contract, that apparel contract with Nike. Now, I'm not sure if that's 100 confirmed or not, but he would be in the know of, you know, kind of the, the inner workings of these contract deals or at least the, the apparel side of things. So that was something that was really interesting to me. But Jeff, I mean if, if Texas can go get another 20, $25 million, they're gonna do it. And it, there's just too much money in it at the moment. It's gonna be interesting obviously when and who, those are the two questions.

Like I said, it's one thing for run of the mill P4 program to do this. And gosh, I think CB just mentioned it a minute ago. This makes that monster Energy deal Brett York did with the Big 12, it makes it look even worse. I think it's worse by the day because you got 20. I think it was 20 million for the entire league per year to have that patch on there. So. But CJ it's one thing for run of the mill P4 program to do it. When Ohio State and Notre Dame are doing it. That kind of gives everybody the green light to like hey, if they're doing it, we might as well too. Especially when we're talking until we get in the royal we in terms of all of us involved in the college football realm, get a better feel for caps and rev share numbers and nil numbers and where this thing is going and get some regulation, man. Make all the money you can while you can. So I don't know. Not too much else for me to add, C.J. but I did think that's an interesting tidbit you picked up. Like it is. It is going to happen. There may be some workarounds but I would imagine to a company who. A bank, whether it's somebody like SoFi finance company, whatever it is Texas. I hope their price to put that logo on a jersey.

I hope it's someone exciting. Right. I'm looking at a list right now of schools that have the, the patch sponsorships. Obviously we talked about it today. Notre Dame, Ohio State becoming the two most recent Air Force and, and army both have usaa. It feels like a no brainer, right. Arkansas, Tyson's food. But then you start really getting to the weeds of. Well this, this, this feels boring. Entrada don't know what they do. They're on byu. The Boosie bank almost sounds like a naughty website. That is Illinois Gate City bank is on North Dakota State. Okay. I don't even know how to say Osage. Osage. Oklahoma State.

Tall Grass is on Wyoming. SRM Concrete is on Vanderbilt. Accesso Biologics is on unlv. I mean, like at that point, and I think what CDC that did that was so, so much of a knot of the cap. If you're going to put a logo on a field, if you're going to put a logo on a jersey, it means something more than just the highest bidder. Thank you, Matthew, for pulling this up. To have it somehow tied back to the university, I think would be great.

But some of these dial pad and Cal, it's just not. I don't even know what that is for utsa can't even read it. Not even gonna bother. But like, where's the excitement? Jeff?

Well, Fred Smith's trying to throw around that FedEx money to get Memphis into a. Into a power conference, and it just, it didn't work. So Memphis has FedEx money, just nobody's willing to take it. So if you're Fred Smith, you might as well just spend that on the football program. So I do. I do feel. Feel better for Memphis. I'm glad we. I'm glad Matthew put this up because I saw the Culver's deal for Wisconsin. I thought that was a bit. I'm like, I, I dig it. Content corresponding with the number of days left until we get to K camp. And you know, in this realm, it's. It's reasons to be optimistic is what you wrote with 10 days to go and kind of, I'm thinking players on the rise. I don't know if that's where Terence is going with that. Like, you know, guys that didn't make an impact last year, they're taking the next step. And I am. I feel like I'm getting way out over my skis on what to expect from Justice Terry this year because I just, I think a disruptive force in the middle of the defense, which Texas really hasn't had. You had it with Alfred Collins. You definitely had it with Byron Murphy and Tandre Sweat. Didn't really have that disruptive of a force. And I'm not saying that, you know, Justice Terry is going to be 2023, Byron Mercer, 2024, Alfred Collins. But C.J. if he can do that in spurts and be a guy that they can rely on that, hey, when we put him in the game, he's going to make an impact. That completely changes the complexion of how Will Muschamp looks at that defensive front.

And I've done some numbers dating back over the last month or so. The month of July is really, really just how deep into a rabbit hole and a specific topic can you get to get to to August, Jeff. That's really what I've learned over the last few years. But one of those rabbit holes was pressure from the interior. Right. Specifically, win rate in Texas was not very good when it came to win rate. I went through, you know, some of the bodies that they've had since Sark and co have taken over at the University of Texas and who the big names are when it came to interior defensive line and, well, the past rushing numbers. The win rate from that spot a year ago was pretty pedestrian. Right. You didn't have much that crept in towards the even the Keandre Coburns, the Morojimos, the Alpha Collins, the Vernon Brattons and of course Byron Murphy, who had I believe the highest win rate on that interior of anybody that Texas has seen by quite a margin, pushing about 19, which is absolutely elite. Texas needs a hero condo. They need Alex January, who's around three and a half percent. Right. Marad Watson, around five and a half percent to make that jump. But one thing that I did notice was Justice Terry in the limited action was hovering around 10. If you can get them to 12, get him to 13. Now you're in the conversation to having a very good win rate threat on the interior and I think that will come at £290. Jeff, obviously we know he was a freakish athlete coming out of high school. We've seen the photos, we've seen the clips. But you see the tape, you go back towards late last year. He's on the field for about seven snaps against Georgia, about four tackles on the field for about 11 snaps against Texas A M. Helps force an interception against Texas A M. So there's the immediate impact now doing that 20 pounds heavier than what he was a year ago. I don't know if there's anyone that's higher on my list at the moment when it comes to making a freshman to sophomore leap and Justice Terry and

with both of his arms fully functional now after, after getting surgery and rehab and during this big part of it, which is nice. Yeah. When you got two arms, it's kind of like Xavier Worthy was much better when he had two hands instead of running out there trying to catch a football with one hand. He was such a better wide receiver. Anybody else. C.J. that is in terms of. And I guess take it a step can. It can mean a number of different things. Like I could argue Ryan Wingo is a guy that's going to take a step because of Cam Coleman's presence, all the other weapons on offense. It just seems like I'm gonna put my SARC hat on right now. Consistency with Ryan Wingo, like that's what, that's what you want at this point. That's what you need from a third year wide receiver. But Justice Terry, to me, C.J. i don't know if I've really got anybody else. Maybe Brandon Baker, probably for me would be a guy on, off.

Brandon Baker's giving somebody Lance Jackson, I think is one. Jeff. That we saw glimpses, right. We saw, whoa, you know, late in that comeback against Mississippi State, he was very often living in the backfield, putting pressure on Mississippi State, forcing them to throw the ball away or creating sacks. That's something that I look at and say, look, Texas knows Colin Simmons is going to be a dog this year. They know that. Other teams know that as a result, who's going to offset that? Is it Lance Jackson? Is it Xeno Mosulo? Where's Colton Vosik fit in this if, if maybe now or never for him? So I look at it in the sense that I really think that this could be a year that Lance Jackson really catapults himself into a six or seven or eight sack category conversation. And if that's, that's the case, Jeff. And you have Colin Simmons, who I would say is a lock for 12 or for, for double digit sacks.

If you can get that on the other side, at least a threat of that. That's something that I don't think Texas has had as a pure pass rusher with an Ethan Burke or Baron Terrell. Guys that are really good off the edge but not that true pass rushing threat.

I'm willing to. This is just me and I know Sark is. Sark would love to take my opinion and he'll take it to heart. I know, trust me. But I CJ I'm willing for this defense to. I'm willing to sacrifice giving up some explosive plays, maybe giving up some more points. You don't want to give up too many. But I'm willing to take that risk for the reward of pressure getting home or manufacturing more pressure and weaponizing the guys you've got in the defensive front. Like hey, you're whatever your third down package is going to be. Don't just have one have multiple third down packages.

Have ways to really weaponize biles as a pass rusher like make sure you're getting the most out of a guy like Brad Spence. So I, that's, that's what I'm willing to see. CJ Just a little more. PK was never going to be a big blitz guy. We know Will Muschamp will, he'll blitz. He'll get after you. There is risk involved in that. But C.J. to me the reward is worth it.

I, I think so too Jeff. If I can add one more in terms of just the overall major leap more consistently and I think we saw it towards the back in the last year as well. Ty Anthony Smith, I think he is going to be as sure sure handed as you'll see in the middle of that defense. But I like your point and I do think that that Texas defense, with the way that Will Muschamp uses these pieces, you're going to see different guys in different roles. Now, how more consistently do you get the greatness out of Colin Simmons or Rasheen Biles complemented by Ty Anthony Smith or Lance Jackson? That's, that's the give and take I want to see this year between the different positions on the defense.

Cisco Diaz says, does Musham have his own version of the NASCAR package? If you go back to just his first run at Texas when he was the defensive coordinator under Mac Brown, they had packages where, you know, he experimented with taking guys like Alex Okafor and Sam Acho and kicking them inside on, you know, sure Fire passing down. So, yeah, I mean, he's. Every coach has their own version of whatever that NASCAR package is. CJ I just think until, until the Giants did it to the Patriots and won a Super bowl with it, I don't think anybody really knew what to name it. So the Giants named it the NASCAR package. Now everybody has a NASCAR package. Must Champ has his version of it. And that's again where you can weaponize a guy like Justice Terry because he can play multiple shades. Lance Jackson can play multiple shades. I feel like Murad Watson, we talked about it could be a guy that could play multiple shades on a given down. So you've got enough versatility, CJ to where you can do it. You should, you should be able to have multiple versions of it.

And look to Anthony Smith, Rasheed Bowels, three defensive touchdowns, three interceptions for Rasheem a year ago, obviously the two interceptions for, for Ty Anthony Smith in the bowl game. He was a guy that played safety in seven on seven back out of, out of Jasper in high school. So there's reason to think that, hey, you don't need to switch things up too much. Like was it three years ago you moved Jade Baron basically to go play, you know, an eight yard middle linebacker in the middle of your defense. You had to throw on Gavin Holmes in previous years. You don't have to do that as much this year, Jeff. Now, safety is going to be interesting and I wrote about it the other day, maybe today, I don't remember these. All these days are kind of flowing the same, Jeff. But yeah, you know, Jelani McDonald's really good. We know that. Like he's going to be a top five safety in the SEC. He's going to be a top 60, 75 pick in the NFL draft next year. Who joins Them who's that next guy? Who's the other ball hawk in the Texas secondary if they have one. Does Kobe Black become that guy?

I've got a crazy idea and I don't. It's probably, it's probably too late for them to put it in or do anything with it or maybe they do, I don't know. But hey, that's why we're here to talk about stuff like this. Move Xavier Phil's to me to nickel and give Grayson Littleton some spin and safety.

I just feel like Littleton's instincts he seems to have a nose for the ball. C.J. i feel like that would, that would play pretty good at safety. I'm not, I'm not saying, I'm not saying he's Earl Thomas but I just feel like hey as a middle field safety I think he gives you he's not going to be a liability a man coverage. Like we know that And I just feel like Phil to me probably for what you need the nickel to do in the SEC probably from a size standpoint is what more what must have's looking for.

I like that a lot. I I like that Grayson Wilton's interesting because you have all three areas of the defensive backfield. I think he can play all three. Right corner, nickel safety.

I would think so.

The thing is and I I think we're seeing this with the experiment of Xavier Philsmi spinning down. Jeff is try to get more mass towards the line scrimmage, right? A big athletic guy with the ability to change direction near the line of scrimmage. I think that's something that they like man him up on a tight end. Like I mentioned this last night. Could you imagine if Texas just said hey, hey, that's Eli Stowers over there, right? Just go guard him. Wherever he goes, he goes bathroom, you're there to wipe, right? If he goes to the store, you push his cart. Do that. I think he could have done that right. For Grayson Littleton obviously a little different because he's probably lacking about an inch and a half probably at the time about £15. Now this year he's added some weight but still I think you get a more physical style of player with Phil semi but at least you then have the opportunity and versatility to say hey this isn't working out. Or at least we have a guy that we feel really confident in. Go play safety because we love your eyes, your instincts in reaction to playing the football.

Yeah. Matthew, let's go ahead and put up, put up the graphic. C.J. i want to get your thoughts on this and John Mary is a really good segue to this. So we talked about this on the recruiting breakdown today which you can getting here on the channel. This is from the thsea convention. I I would listen to Will Muschamp's lecture, his presentation and it was basically a defensive back clinic and he went down kind of his checklist of what he looks for in defensive backs. Now that doesn't mean if you're not six feet tall, well, mushy, I'm not recruiting you. If you have 32 inch arms, he's not recruiting you. Basically, if you're deficient in one of those areas, you need to be elite elsewhere. That's how you know Earl Thomas ends up playing for well Much Champ and has a Hall of Fame career in the national football league. But C.J. when I looked at these. And again Mark Marshals, thank you for the the super chat question on John Meredith. As I'm in the room, CJ Listening to Will Mustard run this down, I'm like, dude, this checklist basically sounds like John Meredith is the ideal defensive back for Will Mushroom.

Yeah, absolutely. I think John Meredith would have been the ideal defense backer, corner for just about anybody in the country. And I, I've said this a couple times, it's him and Devin Sanchez that I've seen. I think Devin Sanchez probably a little bit more polished of a corner, but boy, there's not much to dislike about John Meredith and what he brings to the table. But that's what I, I look at at the bottom right area of this graphic. Heavy handed to control the receiver at the line of scrimmage, man coverage ability that describes John Meredith. Now Mark Orfe will have to clean up a little bit of that technique.

There's a little lunge at times. There's not as much mirroring with the wide receiver that you'd like to see. But he's long, he's lengthy and he can run right. He checks the box. Sub 11, 100 meter sub 4, 640. I would put that probably right at a 45 at the moment. And he had a great coach up in North Rally. Jay Wilson did a phenomenal job this spring as he moved over originally. But look, I think one of the things with John Meredith is he can catch up Jeff to any mistake that he makes at the line of scrimmage like that.

Yeah.

And that's rare for a lot of these guys.

Yeah. You know, in must Champ second and this was proven his first go around to Texas. If you can't cover man to man, it doesn't matter what position you're playing. Corner, nickel safety, dime field safety, boundary safety, whatever. If you can't cover a man, there's not going to be a place for you.

Right.

Like that's how you know. Again, I hate to keep waxing poetic about must chance. First Go around. But you go back to his first spring yet. Earl Thomas coming off a red shirt year and Blake Gideon as a mid year enrollee. Those guys were starting safeties that spring. It's like man, you're really gonna roll with two young cats. Well go back to the bottom right. Love the traits of guys who played high school quarterback. Athleticism, decision making, having the ball in your hands, communication. Blake Gideon was a high school quarterback. Blake's a coach's son. The trend, the mental transition for Blake was really quick obviously. And cb I think it was CB asked it was was Earl Thomas must chance perfect DB again Earl, this is why this is that caveat. If you're deficient in one area, you better be elite in other areas. Earl Thomas doesn't fit some of those measurable cjs. Not 6ft tall, doesn't have 32 inch arms. I don't know what Earl vertical to broad jump to the combine but on the right hand side all the intangible stuff. There's a reason why he deserves in my opinion to be in the Pro Football hall of Fame because he checks all those other boxes. I, you know we don't see that anymore though. Guys that played high school quarterback transitioning to defense back because especially in the state of Texas, you see it out of state some must champ talked about Malachi Starks was one of those guys, was a high school quarterback, made the transition to safety, ends up being a great player in Georgia, ends up being a first round pick. Texas has it quandary Diggs was a high school quarterback. Go back Ahmad Brooks was a high school quarterback, so is Adrian Phillips. But CJ in this state as, as kind of the, the spread culture, it's not just, you know, it's not just ingrained in everybody. That's what you do. Everybody in high school football in the state of Texas pretty much runs some form of spread offense. You just don't see high school quarterbacks making that transition much anymore now not as much anymore.

And if you do they're going to a slot receiver, outside receiver. Well what we're seeing now is some of these guys that are on the bigger end, they, they end up as a tight end.

Because they already know about that football iq. But it is interesting because you don't see it often enough to, to think about it. But they, they know every scheme, they know every designed route concept to beat opposing, you know, formations, you know, coverages where the hot routes are, etc, that that's going to be interesting to me is how, how then do we see Texas attack recruiting, especially at the cornerback level. Bomasco, interesting one because, yeah, he doesn't fit a lot of these prerequisites and you could check a lot of, you know, the box scores and statistics and say, hey, well, he doesn't really make a lot of plays on the football either, right? He doesn't have a lot of interceptions. He had seven, I believe, his senior year in high school, but only one during his time at Rutgers, I believe is the number. So what do you now see in him to think that he's going to be a good match for you in this must champ system? Well, Jeff, I think you go back to these guys will stick his face in the fan. He will certainly play heavy at the line of scrimmage, probably more so than what he's listed at. And here's the interesting one for me that I'd like to get your thoughts on too. But one of those prereqs, or at least one of those things on the outside is being a good blitzer is a bonus. Now, we've seen that with pk, right? He wasn't afraid to bring Orion Watts. He wasn't afraid to bring Jalen Gilbo or Malik Muhammad at times last year. How? I don't know. I don't know. How often do you envision that is the right question. But with this group, do you see that being a fit?

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of blitz and corners, you know, in this scheme, I don't know that they're going to do it all that much. I think if you're going to have DB pressures, probably going to be the nickel and maybe you may even see some safety pressures at time. And look, we. We have to Talk about him. Coach Scott 619 mentioned him a little bit ago, but he is the ultimate wild card. C.J. because you start looking at some of these measurables things Will Muschamp loves Jonah Williams checks a lot of boxes.

And if you're talking about a guy that pro that could have the ability at. I don't know what Jonah's going to report at 62-63-210, whatever he's going to report at next week. Talk about a guy that, yeah, he's got the natural athleticism to play a man coverage. He's got the ball skills to make the kind of habit plays, finish on the ball like Mus champ wants. He should be a good blitzer. He is willing. He's a willing tackler. Like Jonah Williams to me is the ultimate wild card. Like if you get a healthy Jonah Williams that is productive and starts playing up to what we believe his potential is similar to Justice Terry, C.J. on the front end, Jonah Williams, that completely changes how we think about the back end. Now, the other conversation is how much do you want to buy stock into, you know, or I guess lean into thinking, okay, Jonah's gonna be healthy, he's gonna be productive. It's a massive if. But if he is healthy, ready, raring to go and starts producing, I mean, all bets are off on where the secondary goes.

It is. And Syracuse. I don't know if this is ingest or not meaningful. Snap count over under a half. I want to lean the over. But again, it is probably Jeff, to your point, the biggest unknown, the biggest question mark. I'd said Justice Terry is the biggest X factor when it comes to this team reaching its ultimate ceiling. Justice, Jonah Williams is probably just the biggest unknown right now. Right? Because again, I think there's room to carve out pretty significant role in that safety room. If they're saying right now in the middle of the summer, hey, we need to or at least let's toy with the idea of moving Kobe Black to safety. Because we don't know if Derrick Williams or Zealous Hicks or Jonah Johnson, Rubell, Jordan Johnson, Rubella, if those are the guys that we can rely on in the room. Well, Jonah Williams is sitting there right, right, right now saying, I know I wasn't available for the spring, but I'm here now. I'm £210. I'm fully cleared. I'm ready to rock and roll. Give me a chance. And Jeff, I think of every safety that we've talked about, that's the Most athletic. That's the one that checks the most boxes. He has the most ball skills of any of the safeties that are in this room. And I know I'm basing that off of high school tape at Galveston Ball, but I mean, there's a reason why he was as coveted and pursued as a, as a five star safety as he was. He's the biggest unknown right now going into the fall. If he can deliver, if he can be a guy that Texas relies on in this group again, a tandem of Jelani McDonald and Jonah Williams.

D Train mentioned it a minute ago and it just kind of got me thinking. He said, man, Jonas tape was crazy. I hope we get to see it on the field. You go back to when Chad Jones was at LSU back in the mid to late 2000s, and that was a guy that like Jonah, legitimate, legitimate pro potential in two sports, helped helped lsu, helped LSU win a national championship in two sports, help them win it in football as a safety, and helped them win it in baseball when Jonah was coming out. The baseball folks I talked to, because you're always looking for a comp, right? You always want to know what the comp is. And more than one person said the Chad Jones. If you're gonna compare Jonah Williams to Chad Jones, it's a pretty accurate comp. Consider what Jonah's athletic profile and what the ceiling is. Now. Chad Jones ended up in the NFL and unfortunately was in a car accident. Really, really bad leg injury. And that was pretty much the end of Chad Jones football career. But cj, like I, I know we get excited about the idea of Jonah Williams, but the reason why we do is because if it hits and it works out the way we believe it's going to work out, if he hits his ceiling, you've got a guy that's got legitimate pro potential in two sports. Like those guys don't come around very often anymore.

And Chad Jones, Chad Jones was a unicorn for his day. And a healthy Jonah Williams that's producing could be that kind of guy.

And I, I think that's why I know, I know we, we talked. We kind of dubbed him at Mosley kind of Sasquatch a year ago because you hear about him, you never seen him like this year. Sasquatch probably is Jonah Williams.

You know, you hear all the myths of the fables, the tales, folks seeing what they want to see and then run into the town villagers and spreading the word of the. Probably something a little enhanced. And right now I think that's kind of what Jonah is at right now, because you got a taste of that in baseball. You saw a guy his freshman year step in and for what, 25 or 30 starts, hit north of 300 in the heart of SEC play. Yeah, he said he's like, okay, like, I, I see the athletics, I see what, what makes him a special athlete, but can he do that in football? And I think he only had about 70 snaps, 79 snaps a year ago. And even then, that feels like a little, a little on the high side versus what actual impact there was given the games in which he was on the field for. But you're just waiting and hoping that that first major impact comes so you can sit there and say, oh, I've heard about the guy that can leap tall buildings in a single bound. He's faster than a speeding bullet. And I can report back on that with what I've seen visually. Other than that, you know, he's kind of on that. The unknown, the Sasquatch side of things. I don't like, I don't like saying that right now, Jeff.

Right. I don't like saying that Desmond Harrison was ultimate Sasquatch, because really, I never saw Desmond Harrison. I, I don't remember. I can't recall. No, I know he took snaps at some point in his career. I can't recall seeing Desmond Harrison, like, in a meaningful moment on the field in a Texas football game. And that that recruit still made the league after all his travels, still ended up making league, was actually a starting offensive tackle in the NFL after all his travels. But enough about Desmond Harrison. Hey, real quick. I want to get back to that John Meredith super chat we had a minute ago because Jason Watson said this about Jonah Williams, that at a minimum, if Jonah's mostly healthy, he'd be a heck of a gunner. CJ I don't know about the gunner on the punt scene, but John Meredith, in a five for five world, that's where he can help you. Like, if physically you determine that he's ready to go, he can be on your kickoff team, punt team, whatever. He can play on teams, and it's not a wasted year to get him some snapshots. I think you wrote this today. You, you talked about your countdown to. Countdown to camp. I know you wrote about special teams, man, if your coverage units, at a minimum, if your coverage units aren't top three, top five in the country, something went terribly wrong. As talented as this roster is, this should be like an elite, elite top of the totem pole group covering kicks. And probably I'm gonna throw in your return units too, since you're bringing Ryan Niblett back.

Yeah, I, I think every year, like, who might be the designated punt blocker as well? You know, I think in 2022, you know, Texas just said, hey, Keelan Robinson, you're the fastest player on the field. Go block that punt. And he did it several times. Right. Who might that be this year?

Ethan Burke was a guy that Texas said, hey, just, just stick a hand up. Vernon brought an Alfred Collins. Each had success. Just stick a hand up in a gap and block a, block a field goal. They all had success doing that. Who might be that this year? I think Jonah Williams is a fantastic, fantastic, really good candidate to be a, a specialist pump blocker. I think John Meredith is another one that you look at and say again, checks every box, physically has the speed, has the length. We'll see what the instincts and the speed of the game look like early in fall camp or what we hear about from him because again, that's a big jump to, to not play a senior season, to not be a guy that, you know, has had a full off season in the weight room, to get acclimated to playing at the college level. That's going to be interesting. I think right now, Jeff, and folks in the chat, I'd like for you to sound off on this as well. My, my initial guess on who your designated kick blocker, field goal attempt blocker is, that'd be Lance Jackson.

C.J. i, I think, I think kind of that single season passing yardage record, it's a little over 3, 400 yards by cold 3412, whatever it is, I forget the number off top of my head. I think that's a real, that's realistic for Arch to get to this year. The main thing I would like to see with architecture, as long as he's keeping those turnover numbers low, I, I don't say I don't care about the rest of it, but that to me was the most impressive thing about Arch last year. You look at those wins, the WINS over top 10 teams, they had the win over Vanderbilt, went over Oklahoma and the one over A M. He didn't turn the ball over in any of those games.

If you can keep getting your quarter and even, you know, he did have the 1 turnover in the Georgia game, but we know the offense was up against it. So I don't, I don't pin the Georgia loss on Arch specifically like that wouldn't be fair. But if he can keep doing that, C.J. and you're in your big games like, I'll, I'll take whatever else happens.

Yeah, certainly. Here, here's kind of where I line on this. I would love to see arch eclipse 4, 000 passing yards in a 12 game season. That's about 3, 330. That might be a little too much. But if Texas plays into the season like we expect, that should be attainable. Right? I think 3, 500 is, is kind of that regular season 1212 game mark that you'd like to see. That's a tick under 300 per game. I think Arch can attain, can get there, especially with this group of wide receivers. And this might be, this might be a little, a little bit too much. Jeff, I'll be completely honest. Arch sat last year with a, I believe is 27 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. 26 touchdowns, seven interceptions. That's right under, right under 4 to 1 touchdown interception ratio. If he's anywhere from 4.5 to 5 this year. And again, that's a lot to ask for. Texas will be playing very deep into the College Football Playoff, taking care of the football, putting points on the board. Texas will be very well suited for a run in the college football playoffs and they'll be right there in the hunt for the SEC. Now what does that look like? Is 30 touchdowns on the table passing wise? You could have argued last year he could have got there if he didn't if he didn't rush for 10 of them, Jeff. Right. He, he only needed four more. Yeah, I think 30 is kind of the base and I think 35 passing or 3, 500 passing yards is kind of where I look at and say okay, by the end of 12 games, I would love for that to be where Texas is at or where our training is at going into postseason.

Yeah, I mean you think about last year, Arch first from a yard standpoint, Arch was 3163 last year in 13 games averaging was it 240, a little over 243 yards per game. But I've, I've, I've talked a lot about the numbers like pretty much through the Kentucky game. Statistically he was one of the worst quarterbacks in the sec. Right. He was in the bottom pretty much the bottom quarter or close to it in just about every statistical category in those starting with the Mississippi State game and really kind of down the stretch once you get to the month of November in the bowl game, he was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country. Like pass yards per game I think, I think it went from 207 like 288, like. And granted the Texas run game being non existent had something to do with that, a little bit to do with that. But yeah, it's kind of remarkable almost that arch got to over 3000 yards considering how bad that start was. I think if you're looking especially because you I go look at Colt McCoy's 2008 and which the year he should have won the Heisman. Colt McCoy was the best, most valuable, whatever label you want to put on a cult on the Heisman that year in 13 games, Colt McCoy three, 859 yards, 34 touchdowns, eight interceptions. Also I think we forget this. 561 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns. Now I hope Arch doesn't have to carry the ball 136 times like Colt did that year because again, sacks are included in rushing statistics. But at the end of the day, like I think that especially like you said cj this is why we got to start thinking differently about stats. If Texas plays 1617 games compared to that 13 game season for Colt McCoy, I think that, I think Colts 08's a really good place to set like set some benchmarks like if he clears any of those, you're talking statistically about one of the best seasons of Texas quarterback has ever at.

And again he'll have plenty of weapons around him to make that a possibility. Here's one thing. D train made A great comment. 70 completion is on the table. I'm gonna, I'm gonna back off of that a little bit. I won't arch around that 65 to 67%. I say that and look at 70 probably could be on the table. We're just gonna need to see more consistency. This was something that I mentioned today. One reason to pump the brakes is, hey, that consistency thing with Arch. We had a dud in the, in the beginning of the season. We had a dud in the middle of the season and there's a dud passing wise in the back end of the season. What I mean by that is there was three games in 2025 where Arch was under 50 completion. Right. It was that UTEP game no 1 ever wants to talk about. We'll bury the files there. Kentucky obviously gone with the wind. And believe it or not, that A M game was not a game passing the ball outside of Jack injuries where the passing game was consistently there for Arch. And I think a lot of that stemmed from the offensive line. If you go back and I did this the other day. If you go back and you watch that fourth quarter, Jeff, A M probably had three guys in the backfield on every single snap in that fourth one. Yeah, but they didn't touch him. They couldn't. He was too elusive in the pocket. He was dancing in and out or he was using his legs and, and beating A M with his legs. So look, I, I say that because if the pass protection is better, 70 could be there. Quinn I don't think ever hit 70. And Quinn was a guy that I thought in from 0 to 20 yards was probably as good as anybody in the country. I have a take on a Texas or on a quarterback on the Texas roster that I want to get to yesterday. So shelf that or tomorrow, Jeff. Shelf that for tomorrow. But 65 to 70 or 67 is where I want ours because I think they're going to throw the ball too much downfield for that accuracy number to be elite.

Elite. I'll give you another kind of benchmark season. Sam Ellinger's 2019. Now I mentioned Colts 08. Colt was over 76 completions. I have no. I'm not expecting Arch to get there like at all. Nobody.

you look at Sam in 2019. Those are your Devin Duvernay caught 100 balls. Sam was 65. Completion rate over 3,600 almost 3, 700 yards, 32 touchdowns, 10 picks rushing touchdowns, had seven rushing touchdowns, did rush for 663. Again, I hope Arch doesn't get close to the 100 and 63 carry Sam had that year. But yeah, and you just look at the passing numbers. Like that's if he's in the if he just gets to like the 65 plus percent range, I I then I think the yards and the touchdowns, everything else will be there. And I do you know, Bobby and Jerry talked about it recently on Coffee and football because there's all those anonymous surveys that come out of those anonymous quotes from coaches. I don't have a problem with. Like no coach is going to go on the record and say what he really feels. But there was one in there and I thought the the you saw some positives about Arch. But I thought the fairest criticism of Arch was and some of it's maybe some technique stuff that's not allowing him to be as crisp as he needs to be in the quick game and in the short game. That's fair. But I would also counter that with how often was he just like you described him in the A M game, which was the Oklahoma game is another one. And when you're running for your life, you don't have a lot of time to just get perfectly set and get your feet underneath you and be in rhythm for arc. Some of those games was about survival. So I do, I do think CJ it is a fair critique. I think that he does need to get some technique stuff cleaned up and some mechanics. But at the end of the day, like if, if he's if your offensive line just get to like average consistently on past protection, some of that stuff will take care of itself.

Yeah, I, I completely disagree. And that's why whenever I look at this left guard battle, the best pass protector wins for me. I don't know what Texas will do. I don't know what Kyle Flood and Stark will do when it comes to trotting out that fifth member. But boy oh boy, it Cannot be worse than what Texas trotted out a year ago with the contingency of four guys that saw snaps. It has to be better. And it starts with pass protection for me. All right.

And Sean Miller had kind of a summer update press conference today down on the four acres. Hank south and I were both there, and Hank's got some good notes over at. On texasfootball.com we'll hear part of that because we'll hear Sean Miller talk about Marcus Spears Jr. Here in a minute. But shout out to producer Matt. This first clip we're gonna hear is talking about dovetailing the momentum this program had due to the Sweet 16 run and taking that into the transfer portal. Building a roster, C.J. that looks like it can help Texas compete for a national championship this coming season.

I'll start first with how we ended last season. You know, last season's ending gave our program tremendous momentum. You know, as much as you like to talk about the totality of a college basketball season, so much of our game is wired for March Madness, whether we like to admit it or not. It's really not fair when you consider it's a 35 to 37 game season and it begins in the summer. But those four weeks in March, five weeks, first week of April, it captivates the world that loves the sport. And we were playing our very best. You know, guys like Tramond, Mark Jordan, Pope, Dalen Swain, Modest Kendall, Weaver, those guys, they. They rose like our. Our team came together and because of how it finished in the level that we were able to play at, it gave us a tremendous, I think, Runway towards the next season. So, number one, we had a strategy in the portal. You know, we really wanted to make sure that our guard position, our forward position, in our center position position were intact. And we wanted to create experience and depth and really build a team that could compete for the top prize in our league, the sec.

Cj, He. He said something in there later, too, talking about building the roster. That one thing he learned about being in the SEC for a year is just the athleticism you face in this league and lineups where guys can guard, defend multiple positions. And you look at the way they built this roster now. I just like the fact, yes, it is an uber talented roster. I just like the fact that they've got Options now, you can mix different lineups. You've got multiple guys on this roster now, whether it's Isaiah Johnson, whether it's. I think Austin Goosby can do some of this. I think David Punch can do it at times. Mods can do it at times. You got multiple guys now, cj where you. They can run your offense. You can facilitate things and run things through them. I just like that they've got options this year. Like, it's remarkable almost the success they had and where they got. Considering just how. When we look back on how limited that team was last year.

Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it. And that's kind of what I'm looking at this roster right now, Jeff. And I know that Jared does a great job breaking it down. You and him both. The thing that I look at with Sean Miller always is strong guard play. Everywhere he's been, there's been guards that you look at and say, oh, these guys can play a lot of basketball really well. Ryan Connell is one that made the jump from Xavier, didn't follow Sean over to Texas. He went to Louisville instead, was drafted in the mid second round this year and was one of the most impressive G leaguers in the entire NBA over the last month. That's another. So I look at this group. You know, whenever you talk about his type of guy, I think this roster has it. But it pairs up well without what I believe is the physicality that you need to have in the SEC when it comes to a number of guys. Right. I think Amari Evans is one. Freeman, Jeff. A lot of versatility out on the wings there. A lot of size, too.

Yep. And that's not even talking about whatever you're gonna get from John Clark, Louis Obiora and your. For a lot of your freshmen not coming off the bench. And I own. Rev Share mentioned something. We'll talk about this real quick. David Punch had Lasik like Wingo. I think David Punch did have an eye pursuit. Now, I saw him do an interview where he was talking about having an eye procedure. And I'm like, okay. Like, is this like, just like Lasik? Did he have like some kind of medical condition? Like, I don't know.

You just hear eye surgery and you're like, okay, that can mean a lot of things. So I asked. I actually asked Sean Miller about it today, and he said it wasn't like a. He didn't. Yeah, he didn't. It wasn't like dire consequences or anything or like just. Yeah, it does. He didn't confirm that it was Lasik specifically, but he did say cleared up his vision. And now, hey, now David Punch with clear vision now we'll see what he can do. He's already putting, he put up really good numbers of TCU. Really productive player, the Big 12. So, yes, he did have some surgery, a procedure in May, I think, to correct his vision. And John Miller said they've noticed results him, he's shooting the ball pretty well, so we'll see how that carries over. Also, Isaiah Johnson, Jerry reported this over on texasfootball.com this morning. Isaiah Johnson's had a thumb injury. Sean talked about that a little bit. He's going to be good to go. Like I think either late this week or early next week. He's going to be full, full go. So nothing really major on Isaiah Johnson's thumb. I mentioned Marcus Spears Jr. And CJ you talked about, you know, we talked about young guys and the guy Sean Miller's coached. This is Sean Miller talking about part of what he said. He talked a long time about Marcus Spears Jr. Day, and rightfully so, because you've got the number one overall prospect in the country in 2027 to reclassify. Join your program for the 2627 season. He's going to talk about DeMarcus Spears joining the program. But listen to the names he drops at the end. We'll talk about it once the clip is done. Cut the total package with somebody like Marcus. One thing to note about Marcus is he's been 16 years old until recently. He just turned 17. So when you think about how young he is, not only on our basketball team, but in the world of college basketball, you know, we have to give him the respect and the patience that he deserves. This year more than anything has to be a year of growth and learning and development. And no doubt he'll do all three of those things because looking at his talent, his ceiling, he might have the highest ceiling of anybody in our program. His talent level jumps off the charts. But being as young as he is, I can't believe how bright he is in terms of learning on the court, wanting to learn, being a sponge. And then as a young player who's talented, you always wonder, does he have the work capacity? And we found out very quickly that he does. So we're clear. It wasn't our idea for Marcus to reclass. It was his family's idea. I think it really stemmed from his mom. And then it spread. They did their research, they explored whether he can or could be able to do it. And I think once they, they explored that, they came to more than just us with the idea. And I'm elated that we were able to, number one, convince him to come here to the University of Texas because if you're a fan of our program, if you love Texas, you're going to really love watching Marcus develop. And the other part of that development, I want to be clear on this, he's not just somebody who's here only to develop this year. He will impact our team, he will impact winning. It took me about three days to see that. And I think what you're going to find is he's just going to get better and better. My experience with the youngest players that I've coached, Aaron Gordon, Lowry, Markkanen, Dalen Swain, in their first three months of college, they can really make a huge jump. So it's important that all of us, when you watch him early on at 17 years old, that you don't judge him just then and there because he was will get better and he will really, his trajectory goes more like this. And I think when you see him in January and February, he won't be the same person or player on the basketball court.

Lori Mark, Lori Market has been an all star. Aaron Gordon's been a really big piece of a team that's won an NBA title. Dalen Swain may, you could argue, could have been SEC player of the year last year and was a first round pick. I know we're talking about a highly rated prospect, C.J. but man, that, that's high praise when you're talking about guys a Sean Miller got when they were young, where they were when they started with him, where they were when they ended. And take all that in consideration, consider Marcus Spears JR. Is probably starting a lot further ahead than any of those guys were.

Right. He did a great job laying the land of what to expect early on from Marcus Spears Jr. And I think it's worth repeating is, look, this kid is 17 years old. He's probably going to be the very youngest player in all of college basketball, let alone the SEC this year. Now, where does he fit with this, this, this team? Probably second, third, fourth guy off the bench. What kind of minutes do we see? I think that's dependent upon what the other guys can provide as well as what he can and, and crunch situations. But more than anything it's, hey, be patient because this is again the youngest guy in all of the country joining a team that has a lot of veteran pieces and a lot of guys in what would fit his 3, 4, 5, it's 3 or 4 position on the court. So I'm excited for him, Jeff. But again, I also understand that towards the back end, probably back end of this year is when you're really start to see the jump going into what will be his second year at Texas.

Again, we have to temper expectations even though we are talking about a guy. He, he may be a prodigy, he may be a guy that's top of the first round type guy by the time he's done. But Jerry didn't help me recently. Cj he made the, he made that Chris Bosch comp. I mean I, I've seen some really good high school basketball players in my day. I don't know that I've seen any better at that age in that level than Chris Bosch. So if we're talking about it can't be in anywhere in that realm talking about a pretty special basketball player, but a guy that again, if, if the fan base, everybody watching this just has some patience, at some point Marcus Spears Jr. Is going to get there, be a really big part of this team. It's exciting nonetheless. I love the fact that we got a reason to sit here in late July right before camp starts and talk Texas basketball.

I'd still be there, still be around, but it was rough. Yeah, it's Sean Watson. It's not close. I'll tell you this. I actually really like Brian Harson a lot as a play caller. Just kind of his offensive philosophy, what he valued. I just thought Harson was a pretty guy. I thought Major did a really good job of simplifying things. Don't make it too complicated. Just hey, figure out who your guys are that need the ball and get it to him. I remember when he took over for Harson in that Alamo bowl against Oregon State. You know, I think sometimes Brian Harson thought too far outside the box. Kind of got two kind of abstract. There was a game against Kansas where he said he couldn't get Marquis Goodwin the ball because the ball wasn't placed on the right hash and went in this big dissertation and I'm like, dude got an Olympic long jumper and a guy that's got world legit, world class feet. I don't care. The ball could be like on the 1 inch line coming out. I gotta get. I'm gonna get in Marquis Goodwin's hands. Like there is no bad situation situation where you can get the ball in his hands. Major didn't do that. Major told Marquis Goodwin before that Alamo Will said, hey, get you a Red Bull because I'm coming to you early and often. And Marquis Goodwin got the ball a lot. And I'm actually gonna give Sandman some props here. Sandman not liking the way Brian Harson performed against ou. Major Apple at the one year he was the offensive coordinator in the OU game was that 2013 game. And he made it a point that because Major understood what that game was all about. Hey, we're just going to come out and be physical. We're going to pound them. And I think Malcolm Brown and Jonathan Gray Both went for 100 yards that day. I don't know if you remember, but there was a game in 2015, the week after they beat OU. They played K State at home in a monsoon, like just poured the whole game and they had to run the football because Gerard heard legit, like could not grip the ball properly to throw it. So the forward pass was pretty much out of your playbook. And Jay Norvell and Jeff Traylor managed to cobble together a a game plan that won a game when you literally could not throw the football.

But I think, like, this is an offense that you can, like, legitimately enjoy watching when everything's clicking.
