We've got breaking news to talk about here on on this latest edition of On Texas Football, brought to you by Prize Picks. I'm Jeff Howe, joined by Bobby Burton, Hank south and CJ Vogel to talk about this breaking news. Bobby, on Texas Football first reported Saturday morning, Cole Hudson has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA seeking an extra year of eligibility. Bobby, what does this mean? Talk us through this process?

Yeah, absolutely similar to Jeff to what Kendall Weaver and Jordan Pope have done against the NCAA in basketball. Cole Hudson is doing similarly filed a lawsuit in Travis county on Friday afternoon seeking an additional year of eligibility. Now, a lot of this we haven't heard. We've heard mostly about basketball players doing this because they are not their their draft just happened in football, the draft happened and then a bunch of free agent deals occurred. Well, Cole Hudson ended up he was offered a deal by the Dallas Cowboys, declined that to stay in school to complete his MBA that he started last year at the University of Texas. Well, because he did that, he is now still eligible in the in a similar way to these basketball players if he gets an injunction for the class of 2022 because essentially that class was affected by Covid both before it and after it. So 21, you would have got an extra year 23, you would have got an extra Year 22 did not. And that's what the year that Cole Hudson was part of. He has now sought an injunction or injunctive relief against the NCAA to allow him to play an additional year. And I want to add this just from talking to folks behind the scenes, he has been staying in shape, he's been on campus, etc. Working out all of that stuff. And this gives the Longhorn, somebody that has 40 plus games, experience in college football as well as 23 starts as a Longhorn.

Yeah, we'll see kind of how the process goes and timing and all that. I do think it's important to add on what Bobby said. Texas will take Cole Hudson back. This isn't like a rogue lawsuit. Texas would welcome him back if he gets the year. Hank, let's just look at this on the surface. On the surface, as Bobby said, if Cole Hudson gets this year back, you're getting not only a guy that's played a ton of football for Texas, played 48 games, but you're getting a guy that can come in and in theory compete to, to fill. What is your biggest question mark on the offensive line? That left guard spot?

Yeah, I think it's a no brainer if he's there and is able to come back and gets this injunctive relief. I think that's only a positive for Texas because what it does, you know, you're entering fall camp, adding Lawrence Seymour from Western Kentucky, Jaden Chapman, who had a strong spring, and then he can factor into the mix in that competition, just raises the level of competition. It gives you depth on an offensive line that we saw get hit with injuries last fall camp. You never know what's going to happen in fall camp. Texas fans know that very intimately. Unfortunately. You know, whether it be Andre Kojo last year going down or the running back position a couple years ago, it doesn't hurt to have depth. Certainly in the 12 team playoff era where, you know, you got to go 17, 16, 17 games, you need guys and you look across the offensive line, you know, you kind of have a pretty solid idea of who, who are going to, you know, kind of compete to be those five. What if somebody gets hurt in fall camp? What if somebody gets hurt in week one or you know, you need a guy to step up in week two. Cole Hudson has experience, he has leadership experience as well. That always helps. And, and you know, if you bring back, you know, again, it's going to be a competition. But four starters from last, an offensive line Last year that, you know, started to, to put things together in the back half of the season. I think that's only a positive and a no brainer. If, you know, as the situation has unfolded to where, you know, he's already there, he's doing his NBA. It's not like he left and is coming back like it's. It's a no brainer to me.

C.J. i think there's two ways you can look at this. As Hank said, that's one. Hank's perspective is definitely one way you can look at it. But just play a little devil's advocate if you're Texas, if you're bringing back Cole Hudson, what should this say about the state of the offensive line? If you're still not sure even after getting Lawrence Seymour in for off season, you got Dylan Sikorski out of the portal, you've got a full spring with Jaden Chapman. What does it say, CJ if maybe they're still not sure about what they've got at left guard, you know, that

it's an interesting avenue to kind of at least speculate on what that that means for the offensive line. But at the end of the day, do you turn down a guy with over 1900 career snaps? I would say probably not. Right. And not only does this add to the left guard's situation, but center as well, right? Let's not forget there were five starts from Cole Hudson at the center position a year ago. To me, that's where he played his best football. So does that then add a competition for Connor Robertson, you know, Jackson Christian, Cole Hudson in the mix potentially at center? I think that's where I kind of circle a potential return for Cole Hudson and say, all right, that that's where I would imagine his impact most felt for Texas in 2026. But at the end of the day, you know, you bring him back. Look again, Bobby. Set the set, the scenes. 1900 career snaps, 43 games, 48 games, whatever it is, let's play a lot of football in his day. I don't think you turn that down, especially on the offensive line, especially with the guy that knows the system, especially with a guy who was a leader by the time that he left the Texas Longhorns in 2025. So to me, it's a no brainer to take him back. Where does he fit in, I think is. Well, we'll see is basically where I lie on that.

C.J. i'm glad you mentioned Jackson Christian. I want to come back to him in, in just a second. But Bobby, we talk about timing at the start of this. What does timing look like? I know this was filed on Friday, but what, what does it look like for the next in the coming days and weeks for this to play out?

Well, Texas doesn't start spring or excuse me, fall camp until August 4th, I believe August 5th, that time frame. So that gives them essentially three weeks. The injunction was will try to be heard before then and get a result before then so he can be available for the start of fall camp. This is, by the way, this is not something that has just been sprung on folks. This has been in the works for quite a while behind the scenes trying to lay the groundwork and get this taken care of. I got wind of it earlier this week and alluded, alluded to it on our message boards as something that might be occurring. And the fact that it's come to come into play now I think is a good thing because to CJ's point, this is found money and to Hanksman, this is found money. If you're at the University of Texas, you get a guy in with Cole Hudson's experience and I don't think it portends to what it means, anything at all at left guard or center. This is just adding more fuel to the fire for Texas.

If you look down in your pocket and you didn't have Cole Hudson in there before and now you do, all of a sudden you got another extra offensive lineman with a lot of experience. And I think Hank also made a good point experience and know how in this offensive system he's not coming in with no experience. He's played in Red river, he's played against A and M at A and M, by the way, big Games for a number of years. That doesn't mean he's perfect. Nobody's saying that he. Otherwise he would have been a first round draft pick. Right. But he does have experience. Is he got more experience than Dylan Sikorsky at center? The answer is yes. And so to, to CJ's point about different positions, I think give Texas offensive line some position flexibility maybe, you know, what are you going to do if, if, if he's starting at left guard, for example, and Connor Robertson goes down and against OU in the Cotton Bowl. Okay, who you move into center? You're gonna bring in Dylan Sikorsky, who's never played in that game before, or would you move Cole Hudson over there and then figure out who's left guard? I, I think that there's a lot of positives here and I think it's a big win for Texas this late in the game. One that I don't think many people saw coming.

No doubt. Hank, I want to put you on the spot a little bit. Let's just go. You know, Sark doesn't like taking hypothetical questions, but we'll go hypothetical here. Let's say Cole Hudson's eligible, he's with the team, he's good to go. Day one of camp. Is he your starting left guard on September 5th against Texas State, or you still think Lawrence Seymour has the inside track?

I'd probably still take Lawrence Seymour or Jaden Chapman. Jaden Chapman obviously went through the spring. Lawrence Seymour has been part of the plan since earlier this year. Cole Hudson obviously has. This has been in the works. Still a little bit newer to this, but I still think, you know, he adds to that competition at that position. I think he will factor into potentially starting against Texas State, maybe not at left guard. You know, maybe if there's a question mark at center or, you know, an injury happens, I think that's where we could see him factor in. But I think about what, what Shark and Kyle Flood say all the time you want at least eight offensive linemen going into the season. And you know, I think Cole Hudson would be part of that eight. Certainly to where, you know, if you had to bring a guy in or, you know, needed some of that depth for whatever circumstance, he would be available.

I know you had a note on him over on Texas Football.com on Friday. And at the very least, C.J. again, if Cole Hudson's eligible and if he's with the team this fall, at the very least, I like having a veteran depth piece as a buffer between the young guys in the field. I do not like playing young offensive linemen until you're as close to sure as you can as they're ready. But C.J. jackson Christian may be closer to ready, at least from a mentality standpoint, than some of the other young offensive linemen.

Yeah, I think so. And, and that's always, you know, every time we have an offensive lineman commit, every time I talk to an offensive lineman after their official visit or on recruiting trips, my favorite question to ask them is, what's the one word that describes your game? And if you've listened to the channel, you've probably heard my heard me ask that question. And that to me tells a lot about that offensive lineman. If you say gritty, if you say physical, if you say like Jackson Cook, if you come out and you say, I like to maul people, I say, yeah, you check that box. I like hearing that when it comes to my offensive lineman. Well, I I inquired on that. I said, who's the guy right now that's probably the most physical. Who's the guy that has the meanest streak in summer conditioning back in fall camp or spring camp? Who was that guy? And that answer unequivocally was it was Jackson Christian. And I I don't know if that taught me by surprise. Obviously, he did not finish out spring camp because of an MCL issue. But to hear that question and to hear it basically without any hesitation, I thought was a big, you know, sign that potentially down the road, Jackson Christian could be a guy for Texas. Might add a physicality factor that maybe that we haven't seen consistently with this offensive line. So that was encouraging to me. I don't know how that factors into 20, 26 right away.

He's buried a little bit behind what we expect to be. A Lawrence Seymour. He's behind a Connor Robertson. We know Brandon Baker is going to be the right guard this year. And now with Cole Hudson in the mix, look, it, it might even get more crowded for Jackson Christian to be a factor this season, but at the end of the day, I know that he's a guy that when he's on the field and the bullets are flying, boy, he's a mean, he's a mean fellow. And I like that with my offensive lineman.

All right, guys, let's go around the horn one more time and wrap this up with some final thoughts. Bobby, if, if a Texas fan just walked up to you on the street this afternoon and said, bobby, what should I take away from this? What should be my big takeaway? What would you tell them?

Bobby, Found money. This is found money. I mean, look, how many teams are going to add a guy with 23 starts two or three weeks before the start of the season? I, I, I've got, there's 139 teams in college football. Texas is going to be one of two or three that may, may benefit from this, in my opinion.

Hank, your final thought, whether it's something to take away or just a final thought to wrap up this discussion?

Yeah, I, I think this is nothing but good news. I think had there been a situation where he got, you know, if this happened earlier in the year, I think he would have been a hot commodity in the transfer portal. If he decided to go somewhere else, I think other teams would want to take him. I, I just think this is, this is only good news for Texas. It adds depth, it adds more competition at the position, at several positions across the offensive line. And he's not, this is not like a wide receiver position where it's like you kind of, you know, wide receivers a little bit diva position. You come in, you want, you know, there's only one ball to throw around like this. He's going to support the offensive line room regardless. Like, I don't think he's coming in to say oh, this was my job. Like, only me. He's going to support, you know, whatever plays out. And so I think this is nothing but good ads. Leadership adds snaps, versatility, depth. It's just good news for Texas.

Well, look, you know, I agree. Found money. You don't turn down a guy with almost 2, 000 career stat snaps, you know, 23 starts. You know, that's something that I think is valuable. I think he was a leader towards the back end of 2025 as well. Does that mean immediately he has a spot on this offensive line? I think just like Lawrence Seymour, you got to come in and prove that you are a part of the best five. And that's something that Texas went out this year and made sure that they had five, six, seven guys that could come in and play if needed. So I. I do agree. I think this is great for the depth. I think this is great for the competition. I think it's great for that locker room and what Kyle Flood needs to instill with this Texas offensive line. But just like Lawrence Seymour, just like Connor Robertson, I. You need to be part of the best five to be a factor in 2026 when Texas goes and plays Ohio State, when they go to lsu, when they go to A M. And of course, we know that playing in Dallas against Oklahoma, they're going to have a good offensive line. The best five will play. But this certainly raises that level of competition, and that's a good thing.
