We've come to the end of the top 40 on the 40. And now it's time to reveal the top 10 players on the Texas roster in 2026 as voted on by the On Texas Football staff. We'll do that on this latest edition of On Texas Football, brought to you by Prize Picks. I'm Jeff Howe, joined by Jerry Hamilton and C.J. vogel for this video. Guys, let's go ahead. We've done the top 40 on the 40 series. We're down to the top 10. Jerry, I'll start with you. Lance Jackson comes in at number 10. As high as number nine on some ballots, as low as number 14. Jerry, you had Lance Jackson inside the top 10. You're one of the folks that voted him in the top 10 at nine. What, in your opinion makes Lance Jackson that might seem kind of high praise for and maybe a little overcooking for a guy that didn't play a ton last year. But I'm guessing, Jerry, for you, this is the upside, putting him inside the top 10?

Yeah, I would think of the returning Texas players, he's the guy that needs to take the biggest step for this team to maximize. So, I mean, the last two years lost Baron Sorrell, then last year you lost Ethan Burke. Lance Jackson came in as a five star prospect. He's a tremendous prospect. He is a really good fit in Will Muschamp scheme. He can play the big edge. You can roll him inside shade over 270 pounds and let it be a third down pass rusher. Who plays opposite Colin Simmons is going to matter this year to this Texas defense and it's going to matter to Colin Simmons. The way teams play Colin Simmons, if Lance Jackson has that look of wow, this guy's a future first, second round, third round type player. That makes Colin Simmons better, that makes us Texas defense better. And that answers a question. I think one of the questions on the Texas defense going into the season is who is going to be that disruptive player opposite Colin Simmons that helps maximize Colin. And I think Lance Jackson's a natural guy for that. I think he's super talented. I think he had a really strong spring. You know, you had a good spring when the coaching staff doesn't even play you in the, in the showcase part of it, right. They don't want you to get injured. That's a pretty good sign of what they're thinking about your talent level. So I think, C.J. i think Lance Jackson is the guy of all the returning players that needs to make the biggest jump for this team.

Yeah, being opposite, being opposite Colin Simmons, Baron Sorrell benefited. We saw Ethan Burke benefit. Lance Jackson. I'm with you, Jerry. First in line to see if he can benefit. If not, then maybe Xena, maybe somebody else, but Lance Jackson should get the first crack at it. And I love the, I love the ability with Lance Jackson. Justice. Harry, you got multiple guys on this defensive play line that can play multiple shades. CJ I don't know how many different shades Hirokanu can play, but he's our number nine player as voted on by the staff. As high as number six, as low as number 13 on your ballot.

you had Hero Kanu inside the top 10, right at number 10. What made Hiro Kanu a top 10 player for you?

I think it's durability among a number of things. Right. He played 478 snaps a year ago, far and away the leader of that defensive line room. Not to mention he is the vocal mouthpiece, the, the leader of that group. And it was very evident early in the year, a year ago when a guy that had just joined the Texas program out of the portal was now being, you know, kind of fed out to us media members. Texas trust this guy. The coaching staff trust this guy. And to get him in his first real extended snaps as a Division 1 high level football player and just get that level of input or output, I'm excited for what he can do in 2026. The other thing is, look, he played last year, right at 300 pounds in the spring, we heard again he gained about 20 pounds, was up to 320 on the most recent roster update, he's at 309. So finding where his body needs to be for an increased pass rush I think is going to be huge. Because that's something that if you look at it for Hiro KANU to come back to Texas, I'm sure that one critique from NFL scouts was you need to find a way to be more of a threat rushing the passer at 309 pounds and hopefully a reduced work rate.

Let's go to number eight, Jerry. And you had Ryan Wingo on your ballot at eight. He's the consensus number eight player for the OTF staff. Got as high as number six on some ballots, as low as 12. Jerry. I'm surprised it was that polarizing in terms of where Ryan Wingo was on some of these ballots. Is it just for you? Is it just consistency with him or is there something else he needs to do?

No, that's it. Look, I kind of put him in a bucket with Alfred Collins. Alfred. Now, Ryan's been more productive on the field in his two years, but I put him in the same bucket and here's why. What did we say about Alfred Collins for three years? Man, that guy has first or second round potential. Are we going to see it at Texas now? We've seen more flashes from Wingo than we did Alfre Collins in his first two years. To be fair, he also plays wide receiver, so those big plays are more readily available. But I still think there's, there's a lot Ryan Wingo can pull out of his talent level. And that I think puts him in that bucket for Alfred, with Alfred Collins. For me. If we see that this is his draft year, he didn't come to Texas to stay four years, right? This is it. When Alfred Collins, which was his fifth year, entered that last year, you saw him make a big jump. If Ryan Wingo. Look, and we're not talking about a lot, CJ's got the numbers, but if the drop percentage, if it shrinks a Little bit. That makes a big difference with, with how few targets these guys actually get in a percentage drop percentage. But if we see the best version of Ryan Wingo this year, he'll be higher on this list and he'll probably be a late first round pick. But I have, I have him here because of his importance to this team and how talented he is. But anybody that put him 12, I'm okay with because he, I, he just feels like Alfred Collins to me. And we are all waiting to see the best version of Ryan Wingo and this is his draft here, so I'm guessing we're going to see it this year. With Alfred Collins, we had to wait five years. Wingo won't be here five years. So we're going to see it this year.

Yep, no doubt. Jerry, I, I want to stick with you for number seven because Bo Masco comes in at number seven. And of all the OTF staff on the ballots, you had Bo Masco, you had kind of the high positioning for him at number six. Jerry, that means you believe Bo Masco, as we enter the season is on the cusp of being a top five player on this roster.

Yeah, look, I think he's the best corner on this roster. I think if you said both guys had to play nickel and they couldn't play any other position, I think Bo Masco might be the starting nickel on this team. If Bo Masco had to move to free safety tomorrow, I think he would win that job over Kobe Black and Derrick Williams. So he is one of the best pure football players on this team. And he is a guy that's one of the most versatile players on this team as well. And I think he, what he does too is he's a really good man corner. I think he's going to fit Will Muschamp scheme and I think that's very important because we still don't know who's going to win the other corner spot. I mean, Bomasco's got a little pressure on him more than when he came into Texas, but I think he's a tremendous football player. I think he is better like he's one of those guys and it happens in recruiting and it happens in the portal. Okay. It happened with Hero Canoe. Even though, even though Bo Masco is a much more established college football player, he was just in the shadows at Rutgers getting the hell beat out of him all the time. Right. And having his dauber down every Saturday when he took the field. Other than competitive Nature. He's better than anybody thought when he got the Texas, like he's elevated himself and like what they're thinking in the building about where he could go in an NFL draft. He's a crucial player for this team this year and I think he's going to emerge as one of the top five best pure football players on this team.

All right, let's go to number six, C.J. jelani McDonald. I believe you had him at six on your ballot. Also an 11th vote. 11th place vote for Jelani McDonald.

is it, is there something really big missing with Jelani McDonald? We, we've been waiting for him to take that next step from being good to being elite. Do you think this is the year C.J. he takes that, that step, it's now or never for him.

C.J. Vogel
Yeah, I, I, I think so. And again, he checks all those boxes that you hope to see from a big time impact safe, safety, right? He's long, he's lengthy, he's not afraid to hit. In fact, he's one of the best tacklers from the safety position in all the SEC according to pff, and Texas has seen that. I, I go back to when he made his first real impact for Texas in 2024. Andrew Makuba did not make the trip out to Nashville to play Vanderbilt. And that first series, first quarter of the game, you saw Jelan McDonald screaming down the field, making plays at the line of scrimmage. You said, okay, that looks like something Texas can build with now, being the guy in that safety room, being that guy in the secondary in general. All we've heard throughout the season is that he's made that jump vocally as the leader in that room. And I go back to hero con because that makes when you play with pressure on your shoulders and that play doesn't dip, that typically bodes well towards the season. I think for Jelani, who we talk about contract year, look, he could have left a year ago. Now coming back with aspirations to be a top 50, top 60 pick, I, I think he's going to live up to those. But the, the turnover numbers, for me, he got a kind of a freebie against Arkansas last year. That's where I look at and say for him to make that jump, you see more force fumbles, need to see more hands in passing lanes. I think he gets it done this year.

Havoc is a big thing with Will Muschamp. And as we get into the top five, Jerry, you and I are on the same page with the guy at number five, Rasheen Biles, both you and I had him at three on our ballots. When we talk about Havoc playmakers, he's on the short list of guys that are as good at that as anybody in college football. My only concern, Jerry, and this is kind of first world problems, my only concern with Rashin Biles, how is he gonna hold up that week to week thump and the week to week grind of playing a nine game SEC schedule? Can he physically hold up if he does that, Jerry, there's no reason why he shouldn't be first or second team all SEC type guy in the mix to be an All American.

Yeah, look, I, I'll go a step further, Jeff. If he has a fully healthy season, he'll be a first team all American. I firmly believe he's one of the best football players in the country. I say look, of all the players on this Texas roster, I said if, if Jerry, who was born to play football, I think it may be Biles. My first answer.

Yeah, he.

That doesn't mean you're going to be the highest drafted. That doesn't mean you're the necessarily the most important to a winning loss of a team on Saturday. But Rasheem Biles, it just comes off. It plays a different position like Quandary Diggs. It's like, dude, you were born to play, man. You were just really good. You have really good instincts at this game. You can, you can do anything with him. You can move him around. Dude, he could, you could ask him to cover slot receivers and he'd find a way to not look bad doing it, guys. I mean, that's just how good a football player he is. Is a former safety. He's got instincts, he's got an understanding of coverage. He's a tremendous blitzer. Now what was interesting with him, to your point, Jeff, is Pittsburgh just pretty much turned him loose and just let him go. Right. Wind it up and watch it, you know, just wind it up and then just watch him go. That's how they play defensive pit. Obviously there's a lot more gap integrity in Will Muschamp's defense in the SEC that he's going to play. So it's going to be a different type of Rasheed Biles. But then that's up to Muschamp to bring out the best part of Rashin Biles and that's moving him around and putting him in positions to go. Because you mentioned Havoc, I think this is the best Havoc player on Texas defense.

All right, I agree with that.

Yeah, this is one, this is one of the reasons why you made the coordinator change. Can you weaponize guys like this? Pete Kwikowski for all the good things he did at Texas? Didn't really do that with Anthony Hill. Will Muschamps got a chance to do it right out of the gate with Rashin Bio. So again it say say what you will about pro Football Focus, but if you look at pressure rates and how they were just getting after the quarterback, she bought a little bit better than Anthony Hill on a per snap basis. Rashin Biles, though, not a consensus top five player on this team for the OTF staff because he did come in at seven on one ballot. But CJ now we're into the the last four guys on our list are consensus unanimous top five players on this team by the OTF staff. I don't think these names will surprise anybody. If you've been following along, hopefully you should be able to figure out who we got.

let's start at four with Trevor Goosby. I, I just, I, I actually had Goosebie lower than anybody and I had him at five just because I think once you get in the top five you're really splitting hairs and you got to be really nitpicky. I'm with Jerry. I kind of biles the havoc factor kind of let me put him over Goosebie with cj Trevor Goosby comes in at number four.

Yeah, it wasn't a perfect season for Trevor Goosby in 2025, but boy did he exceed expectations as a first year starter in the SEC. Right. You don't end up on the first team all SEC ballot without having a great year in doing so against some of the top pass rushers in, well, the country.

So what we saw towards the back end, I look at that Texas A M game against Cassius how one that draft scouts and draft experts on Twitter on, on espn on all the shows sat there and said whoa, you know that, that Cassius Howell guy was leading the the conference and sacks he's expected to go in the first round and he basically just was out there doing cardio because there was no impact from what Trevor Goosby was able to subdue with him. So that's something that I look at now. You go against a Prince Will Uman meal, you know, with Jaden woods and Anto A M again, you know, how do you continue to keep that, that assertion on the left side, the blind side of your franchise quarterback? I think strength was the big emphasis this year for Trevor Goosby coming back for his senior year, making sure that he is In a, a checked box from NFL scouts. As a guy that really kind of emphasizes himself in the running game, but also in pass protection once more, I'm expecting a monster year for Trevor Goosby, as I'm sure he is as well.

C.J. i'll stick with you for number three, Cam Coleman. Cam Coleman was. Actually came in as high as number two on ballots, but again, he is a consensus unanimous, I should say, top five player for the OTF staff. C.J. you had Cam Coleman at four. What's your take on Cam Coleman, where he fits into pecking order? We're talking about the very tippy top part of the roster now.

C.J. Vogel
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Look, that there's only a handful of wide receivers in the entire country that has the skill set that Cam Cullen possesses, right? There's reasons why you look at the 2027 NFL Draft and you say, look, it's Jeremiah Smith, it's Cam Coleman. And then there's probably two or three others in that conversation, but they're the tier right there at the top. The deep ball ability, the body control and the hands to me are about stand out for Cam Coleman. But a lot, a lot of this, or at least a little is projection, right? It's a lot of, well, we saw glimpses. We didn't see a full season right now with a quarterback that you expect that can get him the ball consistently. The numbers that we saw at Auburn, they don't jump off the page, but they're expected to jump now that the system has him running actual routes, something that he mentioned back in the spring, but also that can get him the ball in the same zip code. That's something that I've referenced a few times this offseason is, man, I expect that production to jump and I expect Cam Coleman to probably benefit more than anybody that transferred from Tech or from outside of University of Texas to the Longhorns this year, given the quarterback in this game.

Jerry, real quick, you were, you were the low man in terms of the voting on Cam Coleman, and you had him at 5. Again, I say low man. It's kind of like me with Trevor Goose, but you're really splitting hairs. Is there something missing, Jerry, with Cam Coleman, or do you just need to see it with him?

Yeah, no, I think that's, I think what CJ Said is it. I think there's a huge. And this is more NFL draft for Cam Coleman, but yards after catch, route, tree, I mean, look, he, he is a trim. He did a great job at Auburn for having quarterbacks that Couldn't hit him between the numbers. Okay, the, the highlight clips of him and Jackson Arnold were funny because I'm not sure Arnold threw two good balls. Really on with timing and accuracy. All season on the highlight reel, it was always a acrobatic catch, having to slow down for the ball. So with Cam, you kind of say, okay, this is a big opportunity for you at Texas. Yards after catch can elevate you in the NFL draft. And that's just part of the game. He hasn't shown. So until he shows it, until he catches that ball over the middle and makes somebody miss, reverses field a little bit and then takes it 70, we haven't seen that. And I think that's kind of a big part for Cam, but I think in blocking on the perimeter, I think is going to be big for him with all eyes on him. Look, I think the. I think he could be a top 15 pick in the draft. I think when I look at this Texas team, I, I and I, I've said this the whole time because of Rashin Biles playing linebacker and what Muschamp's gonna ask him to do in this defense. Is he more valuable than Cam Coleman to this Texas team? Yeah, I would say there's. You could make that argument. And I would.

Yeah, I would, too, based on where I had these guys on my belt. I had Biles. I'm with you, Jerry. You had him two spots apart. I had him one spot apart. All right, so we are now down to the last two, two and one. Again, we're at the point where everybody can kind of figure it out. So, Jerry, here's the reveal, according to the on Texas football staff, of the top 40 players on the 40 of 2026. Jerry, coming in at number two, it's Arch Manning. You had Arch number one. Jerry, I want you to make the case why Arch should be number one on this list. He's not for us. But why should Arch Manning be number one?

Yeah, I mean, look, he's. He has the ball in his hands every play. I mean, I could end it there, but he has the ball in his hands every play that Texas is on offense. And he, he impacts the game through his play more than any other player on, on the Texas team. And you guys know, I think the absolute world of Colin Simmons, the world since he was 16 years old, of Colin Simmons when I really saw his talent level. But Arch Manning is. Look, it's, it's. He's in the place that Colt McCoy was. He's in the place that Vince Young was. Think about the Texas team with Vince Young and I'm not comparing him as players. Think about all those first round draft picks on that team. How many players ended up going in the first round? How many guys. Brian Robeson had the longest NFL career of all those guys on that team. But Vince Young was still the, the best and most important part of that team. And with Archman, I think Colin Simmons is probably the most talented, gifted athlete on this team. For sure. That's a really good player. But I think what put Arch over the top for me is look, he is the leader of the University of Texas football team. He is the quarterback of the University of Texas football team and there are things that come with that and he is going to be the, the guy that people look to when Texas is playing Ohio State all week. The build up to that game, it's not. They're not going to be showing clips of Colin Simmons playing the run against Ohio State. Yeah, they're going to be showing clips of Arch Manning not playing well against Ohio State in the build up to that game. That is what comes with being a quarterback. Colin Simmons is a great player, but like I said, the build up to that game is not going to be a bunch of ESPN showing clips of Colin Simmons taking on the left tackle on the run game. It's going to be clips of Arch Manning.

Well, CJ Shocker, Colin Simmons comes in at number one, the number one player on this football roster on this football team in this program in 2026 according to the on Texas football staff. You and I both had Simmons at number one. C.J. and I'll let you make the case for Colin at number one. I it to me, it's just the one play I can't get out of my head is early in that Vanderbilt game, he breaks through the line, he almost takes the handoff, forces a fumble. That helps Texas get ahead in that game. Seems like every time this defense needed a big play to be made last year and again it was with a defensive coordinator with a low blitz rate. We talked about to my chagrin how much they dropped him in coverage last year, but it seemed like, hey, when all else fails, they knew Colin Simmons was going to manufacture a Havoc play. That to me, C.J. that's very, very rare to find in football. That, to me is what gave Colin Simmons the edge over Archmanning.

Yeah, Havoc. I mean, we talk about it with Rashin Biles, that that's Colin Simmons to a T. And why I gave him the nod is, look he had a slow start to last year. He didn't put up 11 sacks to lead the conference against the cupcakes on the schedule. Right. The first four games, as we talked about it, the first half of the season with Arch, Colin kind of had that same thing, except it was about a third of the season. He only had two sacks in that first four games. And that's again against what you would expect to be some of the cupcakes that you were able to stat pad against. But I look at those final nine games, the full SEC slate, and then Michigan, 50 pressures, nine sacks, three, four stumbles. That's your best player showing up in the best games. And I'll say this, three sacks against Oklahoma, phenomenal. But Texas also doesn't win that Kentucky game without calling handful of sacks in that game, too. He had seven pressures, eight pressures in that game. Kept Kentucky living behind the chains at times, if not stymie drives. I mean, that's what you look at when your team's not playing well, that your best players elevate your team. And Colin Simmons did that basically the entire season. I thought he took a major step and run support as well last year. I go back to that Florida series where they ran it on three straight plays and it went for three straight losses. Colin didn't have that in his bag in 2024, when he was a true freshman. Now that we saw the step in 25, I'm expecting that to continue in 26. And now that he's up to about 246, 247 pounds, this, to me, is the guy that creates the most havoc. He's the guy that on the field, regardless of quarterback, regardless of receiver, regardless of safety, left tackle, regardless of the positions, opposing teams have to circle where number, number one is on the field and say, hey, we have to account for this guy more than anybody else on this roster. And I want to add to what CJ said, because when I did this list, my. My top three were what and whatever it was, Biles, Arch and Colin. Those are the three players on this team that I think the opponent has to account for every play. Yeah, I think those are the three guys. Okay, that. And I think that's what makes them all different. And that's not a knock on Trevor Goosby. The left tackle is extremely important. But I think when we talk about opponents getting ready to play Texas I think those are the three players that people have to account for the most on this team.
