We're going to ask some of your

thoughts about some things that Steve Sarkeesian said yesterday at the mic, as well as some things that the, the players said in post practice availability. CJ I want to go to you first, your initial thoughts on day two of Longhorn practice.

[C.J.]

Yeah, I watched a lot of the defense today. I kind of split up Wednesday to the offense, Thursday to the defense. And you know, as we have come to know with a lot of these practices, Bobby, special teams takes up a lot of what we watch. Yeah, I use that opportunity to go watch a lot of the defensive linemen. And I know that you and Jerry have said it, Jeff and I talked about it with Marcus last night a little bit, but just the, the sheer number of bodies that Texas has that looks like they could give them 20 plus snaps in a game on the defensive line is very encouraging. And we got to hear from Hirokanu a little bit today as well. But he ran down a list of names of Alex, January, Marad Watson. He mentioned Josiah Sharma as someone that I believe his nickname was, what, Dancing Bear or something like that. I mean, Justice Terry was someone that just watching him move, I mean, it just continues to blow me away a little bit with how quick he is off the line, the size that he has up top. And again, it feels like he got a little bit faster given all the weight that he added over the last year. And of course, I mean, and far just watching him move at 375 pounds, which is apparently down 20 from January when he first arrived. Bobby, I love, I love the group of guys Texas has on the interior of that defensive line and I think they're going to be much better off this year by being able to rotate so many capable bodies versus when, versus a year ago, basically.

Coach, he's a, he's 100% right. I just.

Not that, not that I'm the, the

final decision maker or anything, but you know, when you go watch a team and they have depth and they have depth and size and they even have depth within the youth of the program. So it's not just any one year, it's year upon year stacked one after the other. That's the Texas defensive front this year.

[Coach Shipley]

Yes, it is. And, and that's something that honestly we're not used to. You know, it's been.

[Host (Jeff Howe)]

But, but with the fast, very top heavy, right? I mean, the defensive line's been very top heavy.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, has. But you know, with, with the fast paced offense that we're seeing now, you know, it's, it's, it's awesome to be able to, you know, give guys a break and you got fresh guys out there and, and the level of play doesn't, doesn't go down much, you know, and it's going to be a great opportunity for guys to get lots of reps. And you know, defensive line is something that, you know, last year, you know, coming off the, I guess the, the 24 season, you know, then you come to 25 and you're like, ah, you know, we don't have it anymore. You know, we don't, we don't have those guys. We've got them on the edge, we don't have them inside. And now we've got a plethora of guys inside that gives us a lot of depth. And you keep fresh people on the field. I mean, you know, who was it that said fatigue makes cowards of us all? Was that Newt? Rodney? Or could be. Or it could be like. Anyway, it's a famous quote that I always use to my players, you know, to get yourself in shape, you know, and so having fresh guys out there and a ton of them on the defensive line is a huge, huge plus for this football team.

Bobby, I don't know if you're too keen to our chat in the evening here, but you're going to see a lot of girth comments in here. It's about the size of the fellas on the interior of the defensive line. We, we kind of go off the rails when, when these streams go after dark. But I did take note of this. I put it on on Texas football and the practice thread. I tweeted it out earlier watching Zion Williams and Andre Fard go basically side by side with one that's £750 of man that Texas will have. Obviously, I think Jaffaard is a little bit further along and expected to be much, much more of an impactful guy for this defense. But just to have those types of bodies in this room for not just this year but the future, I think is, is really important for what this room will look like.

It is. I want to add this in the post practice availability. This will be interesting for everyone. Hiro Kanu upperclassman defensive lineman I I asked him who the strongest defensive lineman was on the team and CJ you just mentioned him. He said it's Zion Williams is far the strong. I mean, he didn't even, he didn't hesitate. He said Zion Williams strongest defensive lineman on the team. And I thought that, you know, Zion's only a true sophomore, right? I mean that's, that's crazy to me. But no, they'll. The defensive line will be a strength of, of the Texas Longhorns in 2026. I don't think there's any doubt about that. Combine it with the edge room and I think Texas has got a real play there. Hey, Coach Shipley, I want to grab you on this question before we go into our next piece. By the way, Rod Babers will be joining us here momentarily. Be taking my place. He's at a speaking engagement tonight. So you guys can let it go off the rails even further if you want to. But Coach Shipley, I want to ask you a question. We were interviewing Coach Sarkeesian yesterday afternoon after practice number one. And his thought process was that Texas, in his opinion, is is in a situation where, yes, they have all this talent. It's all about putting it together, though. And he said right now I can't tell you good or bad and I don't see enough of the whole team throughout every workout. But I, I want to say this. The change nowadays from back when you were coaching in college or even in high school is they can have these guys in the summertime. You know, he's got a better I think that, that the. He was kind of, I don't want to say he was, you know, duplicitous or anything like that, but he has a better handle on this team than he did three or four years ago when there were no summer workouts whatsoever. So I feel, I want to ask you your thoughts, I guess, about the idea that he already has a better feel for this team than maybe any coach would have two or three years ago when before these summer practices even got going.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, there's no doubt he's got a great feel for the steam. And, and I want to add this, Bobby, I don't know that you put a lot of stock in who's running with the ones and who's running with the twos right now. I always felt like as a coach, you had guys that busted their tail. They were incredibly dedicated. They deserve a shot, you know, and so you put those guys out there with the ones and with the twos. And then as, as training camp progresses, you start, you know, the cream rises to the top and, and you give those guys a shot. If they take advantage of it, great. You know, we're just going to be a better team, but the cream will rise to the top. And I think, you know, I don't get too worried about, you know, who's running with the ones and who's running with the twos right now, because I think, you know, as a head coach, you want to give a guy a shot that's given his all to your program, you know, and then let training camp play out and see, you know, who gives us the best chance to win. And I don't see that as much now as I used to, as you said, because of the hands on experience the coaches have with the players in the summer that we used to not have. But you know, just, just, you know, people that are worried about, well, where's so and so? Where's so and so? Don't worry about it, you know, I mean, it's going to work out. And I want to add this too. One of the guys that I'm most excited about is Kade Phillips.

This year, let's, let's talk about the DBs a little. CJ. That's a, that's a good segue from, from you, coach. I appreciate it. We had Rod on the immediate postgame reaction with us here at, on Texas football. He said he thinks it's the biggest secondary he's ever seen at Texas.

[Coach Shipley]

Wow, those are big.

[Host (Jeff Howe)]

I mean, that's, he goes, look, we had a guy like Cedric Griffin, you know, we had one guy like Quentin Jammer. He goes, they've got three or four guys right now that are running around back there that are that big or bigger, right? I mean, you have, not only at safety do you have Jelani McDonald, who's got some lankiness to him. Derrick Williams, real lanky, Jonah Williams, plenty big. And then at corner you have, you have, you had corner, you have Cade Phillips, who again is that tall, long guy, and then this John Meredith kid coach like he, he's not, I don't think he's gonna play much this year as of right now at least. He's certainly behind some others. But he's six. He's all of six two, right? And lanky is all. Rob was like, this is the biggest secondary I've seen. I mean, he make, they make a guy that's 6 foot tall to 195 looks small. I mean, Terry Davis looks small back there right now.

He's not a small human.

As a safety, you agree with that,

cj, I'm just trying to imagine how Jordan Johnson Rebel might feel in that group, but I know he's like 5

[Host (Jeff Howe)]

10, 5 11, but he's also 205 pounds right.

[C.J.]

Either he's, he's not out of place when it comes to his physique, but when it comes to, you know, you go down the line of tallest to shortest, he's going to look around, be like, well, this isn't fun for me, but you're absolutely right. And I, I kind of joked with Rod. I walked by him as we were watching the defensive backs, the corners were doing backpedal drills, safeties were doing high point drills after backpedal and braking on, on, you know, kind of, you know, other. Basically reading receivers in a drill. And I, I was watching Rod just take it all in. He's like, man, I feel like a kid in the candy store. And so I'm excited to talk to him about it in a minute. But absolutely, I mean, size is everywhere. And this feels like the secondary. And Bobby, maybe you correct me if I'm wrong, this feels like the secondary that Sark has been trying to. Or he's tried to describe the length, the size and the foot speed that he, he kind of desires in a secondary. He's been talking about that for years. And each year you kind of sit there and say, okay, well, you know, they got the foot speed, you know, maybe they play the football well, but they're not long. Right. They're, they're not super lengthy at the point of attack. But this group in particular, it absolutely is. And, you know, I think you look at Bo Masco, you look at Grayson, Littleton, probably not the two biggest, probably some of the outliers in terms of physique. They play the football as well as anybody. And so that's what's encouraging, is when you combine what Texas hopes to do with the skill sets that they have in that back end. I'm optimistic, especially at the safety room. Just Hearing from Jelani McDonald today, say, hey, man, I got another big body in my room. Jonah Williams, he's 6, 2, 2, 10, 215. He looks like me. He's like, yeah, I'm feeling good about what this room could do.

They are, they're big. Another thing that was interesting and I asked Bob about this as a former coach, I asked Jelani McDonald today. You know, they lost Michael Taft. He was the communicator in the secondary last year.

[C.J.]

Right.

[Host (Jeff Howe)]

Year before they had Makuba and Taft, they lost the. The guy that was getting people lined up just, just did coach Jelani McDonald said, He's that guy this year. He goes, I'm the one trying to be vocal, as vocal as possible. And Hero Canoe said Jelani's back there talking a bunch. How important is that transition for a safety from one guy to now this guy's the communicator. That's a big leap that they're asking for Jelani McDonald. Now. He should be the most prepared for it, but it's still quite a change.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, it is. And, you know, the interesting thing about that is, you know, his coach, excuse me, Blake Gideon, was one of the best at getting everybody lined up. Yeah. So as I say, the quarterback, you know, on the defense back there getting everybody right. And, you know, for Jelani McDonald to come out, you know, and, you know, with confidence, say, I'm. I'm that guy. You know, I feel good about that. But don't underestimate the importance of that guy back there communicating, because it can make you break you.

Really quick when you've got you.

You've got some mismatches or you've got some people that are confused about what's going on. You've got motion and shifting and all this stuff. You know, it takes somebody with a lot of confidence and a lot of film study to be able to get everybody in the right place. That's not to take away from everybody's individual responsibility to know what they're supposed to do, but it helps to have that coach on the field back there who's making sure everybody's lined up correctly. And everybody knows what their responsibility is going to be in this coverage based on this formation, shifts, motions and so forth.

I want to ask. Oh, go ahead, C.J.

[C.J.]

i was just going to add this. There's Jelani's, I believe, direct quote to your. Your question, Bobby, was, I have to act like no one on the field knows what they're doing unless they hear it from me. And of course, that's not the case. These guys understand their roles to coach. His point. But that's the job of the main facilitator in the defense. Right. Make sure that the calls get every corner of the defense. But it makes me go back a little bit. Last year, what were we hearing around maybe two weeks from now in fall camp? It was, hey, they had to put a muzzle on Michael Taft. They had to tell him during practice, hey, you cannot speak anymore because we need Jelani McDonald to take that step vocally. My question and what I hope to hear over the next two to three weeks is, okay, well, if they have to do the same thing to Jelani McDonald, who is then the guy that steps up vocally? Is it a. Derrick Williams is Kobe Black ready at safety to make the calls for that entire secondary. What about a Jonah, right? Who is that next guy? Should, and I'm knocking on wood here, should a Jelani go down? Texas figured out that answer pretty early last year. Jelani was capable, but if Jelani's not able to this year, who's going to be that guy? They need to figure that out in the next two to three.

I think it's going to have to be Derrick Williams, the only one with the experience to do it.

Right.

Your point? That's like, that's. I haven't really thought about that because that could spell disaster quickly if you, if you're communicating the secondaries. There's only one deep, maybe Grayson Littleton, but not at nickel. Not as a nickel. You wouldn't think he's going to be too busy. Yeah, that's a good question. Hey, I, I need it. Rod is going to join us here momentarily and step in for me. Coach, I did have one more question for you as it relates to something that Rod, myself and Jerry were talking about. Texas is smaller at linebacker, as small as they've been in a decade. I mean, they are not big at linebacker now. They can run like the wind.

And they're, they're playmakers. They're more of those, I would call them, those old Jimmy Johnson linebackers, you know what I'm talking, that were a little undersized, but he would change safeties into, into linebackers all day and every day. I was asking coach out after I hear this answer, but I was asking coach about the size of the linebackers and you and me and Jerry post practice were talking about how Rasheen Biles, Ty Anthony Smith and even Brad Spence. They're not typical size linebackers these days. They're, they're 10, 15 pounds lighter than what most teams play with. I was asking coach if he thinks that's purposeful or just the way that mus champ and the team wants to roll this year or just happens to be the guys that they could get that they think are good players.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, I, I, I, I think it's a good thing, personally, especially given the size and the girth as Suj was and so many of our the chat of the guys up front. I, some of my best defenses had linebackers just like that. They could go sideline to sideline. They can cover backs, they can cover tight ends. You know, they can cover the middle crossing guys. I will take speed over size. You know, when you got a big bulky linebacker that can move lottery very well, it can push you in a bind defensively. Now, they're good at plugging holes, but hopefully we have guys up front that are going to keep the offensive lineman off the linebackers. And I'll take speed any day at linebackers and I think Jimmy Johnson will too.

I don't love girth. I just. When sometimes describing some type of players and describing their physique, sometimes that's one of the phrases that comes to mind is, he's got a lot of girth there. But I would not use that term because I know it takes y' all to a. To another place. Go off the rails. What's up, coach? What's up, C.J. what's up, man? How y' all doing? Sorry I'm late, guys. I had to had an appointment talking to some Longhorn fans. And by the way, they also asked about undersized linebackers, too. So it is a concern for a lot of Longhorn fans out there.

[C.J.]

Well, just. So, Rod, a lot of the conversation that we had right before you got on was about the larger size of defensive linemen.

[Rod Babers]

Right.

[C.J.]

So Andrew Fraud, hero kanu, Alex January, Murad Watson and Justice Terry, you sit there and you say, okay, if they're able to just plug up all the holes in front of them, that should, in theory, make the life of some of these undersized linebackers a little easier. Right. You would think. And then, of course, we got off the rails, as we typically do on Mondays and Thursdays. But. But, Rod, that was something that I think when. When you watch this Texas football team practice, it's undeniable. Coach. Just the size there. But give me your thoughts. Right. Because Texas has had speed at linebacker. I mean, Gary Johnson's been a name that people have thrown up quite a bit. Obviously, the Marvin Overshown. Anthony Hill's been that guy, I feel like, with Rashin Biles. And I think Ty Anthony Smith has some foot speed to him, too. Coach. This should be a group that isn't restricted with their lateral pursuits.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah. And yes, I think that's true. And also from a blitzing standpoint, you know, those guys are quick change of direction guys, and I think they can juke offensive linemen and defensive offensive running backs better. You know, that a big, bulky linebacker.

[C.J.]

True.

So like I said before, with the size, given the size we have up front, I love the speed that we have at linebacker. I love the versatility of those guys because they will be tested in games, in the passing game.

[C.J.]

Yep.

And, you know, yeah, certain times you need those gap fillers, those pluggers, those guys that will stack everything up at the line of scrimmage. But, you know, ultimately, that's the defensive line's responsibility. You know, to do. And if they can keep the offensive lineman off our linebackers, let our linebackers get to the football, scrape off the edges, do all those things, then

think it's a great combination. You don't want huge defensive linemen and huge linebackers. I mean, that just. You know, a lot of people back in the day, you could do that when people were running the ball, but you can't do that anymore because your linebackers are asked to cover guys that are pretty dang fast.

When you got to cover Jermaine Bishop or someone like that, probably not ideal for those guys. Coach, I wanted to switch gears just a little bit, talk about the offense, talk about early camp, connections between quarterback and wide receivers. I left the field, I don't know, about 20, 22 minutes into practice today. So we only got to watch a little bit of the quarterbacks and wide receivers throwing today though. I thought Wednesday was cleaner. And we heard from Steve Sarkeesian right after practice talking about, hey, I thought Arch had a good day. Typically early in camp, quarterbacks, wide receivers, you know that rapport maybe not maybe isn't where it needs to be today. It felt like that rapport maybe wasn't where it needed to be. Right. More balls hit the ground today then Wednesday. But I wanted to get your thoughts. What is it like for, you know, quarterback who's been in the program, been in the system Is familiar with some wide receivers. What is that like early in camp to know that they're on the right page or right, you know, kind of in the right direction early in camp?

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, I think that's pretty typical. You know, my days on the 40 acres, I think that's pretty typical. You know, especially even though they're not live. They're not in Padgette, you know, having a defense over there sometimes. But look, Cam Colburn is used to that. I mean, Arch at his worst was what Cam Colburn had at his best.

[C.J.]

That's a great point.

[Coach Shipley]

You know, and so. So I think once they get it all down, you know, live against the defense, you know, I'm. I'm not real concerned about at this point. I've heard several people say that, you know, yeah, he's a little bit rough and timing, you know, that, you know, so on and so forth, but I think that, you know, once they get. Once they get up to this to the speed level of the defense and getting used to those guys being out there, especially once they get the pads on. You know, Cam Coleman is a guy that has been used to getting straight throws. I mean, you know, he had. He had more straight throws that he had throws on the money. And so, you know, that's. That's not a bad thing. And I think it's pretty common this. This at this point in training camp, you know, very rarely do you. Do you hear everything. I mean, there's going to be that. There's going to be that phase of practice time where things aren't quite in sync yet, but they will be.

[C.J.]

Yeah. So I'm. Again, I. I didn't mean to sound alarms. Obviously, it's practice number two. I think we all sat here and said, hey, I. If Arch Manning plays like he did in the second half of the year, I don't care how many passes hit the ground today. But it. It was something that I noticed today that, hey, a little bit more balls hitting the turf. But, Coach, if you're not sounding alarms, I'm not sounding alarms. And everybody in the chat should sit there and say, hey, I'm excited for.

CJ how does the team look physically versus Last year should have taken you up on the umbrella coach. You ever seen a coach come out with an umbrella for, for Fall camp? No, no, no. We were talking about a little bit. We were talking about last night with Marcus. It's like, why do all these guys wear all the, the super baggy hoodies and long sleeves all the time? I would assume that's because protecting against the sun. I have no idea.

[Coach Shipley]

Well, I know when I was in Texas, a lot of guys did that to lose weight. They wanted to sweat. You know, they thought sweat losing, you know, the moisture in the by the water in the body was going to help him lose weight or whatever. But not me. I always dress for the heat. That is, I wore as few clothes as possible.

[C.J.]

Well, it's great. I mean, Bo Davis was always great at it. I mean, he'd come out and that, that one orange hoodie that looked like it had been sweat in about a million times and you know, that burnt orange color, I mean, it didn't look orange anymore, but no, I've always thought that was crazy. But it's a nice little wrestler's cheat code in there as well to lose some water weight. But Justin, to your question, how's the team look physically? Look, it looks big. We just talked about the secondary, we've talked about the defensive line, offensive line. You see much more capable bodies. It looks like we'll have to see you whenever the team goes good on, good here in a, in a week or two. But I think last year we said the same thing. You know, they looked good physically, right? You look like you have 10 or 15 guys who could lead the team off the bus and you'd sit there and say, ah, that kid looks good. So I don't think physicality is something that is in question right now. It's all about how do they perform, right? How do they execute on the field. The size is there, the, the SEC level of play needs to follow. And then here's one coach as well. Jermaine Bishop has been a hot topic. And Matthew, I don't know if, if you were able to get some of those photos I just sent over to you, but this super chat from D train, how did Jermaine Bishop look? We talk about size, we talk about physicality. I don't know if Jermaine Bishop is going to be a guy that falls into that conversation. I'm looking at it right now. Listen, at 6 foot 166, coach many guys like that. But no, he looks great moving with the football. Jeff Howe Just joins us now. We're going to get Rod B. Back here in a little bit. But, Jeff, thank you very much. I'm sure you got a little bit of a look at Jermaine Bishop this afternoon as well. Jeff, anything stand out to you in regards to the freshman out of Willis?

He was working on punt returns. Like I heard you say it earlier, CJ's teams takes up a ton of time during our media windows, which is fine. It's great. You know, that was the same. It was the same with Charlie Strong, the same with Tom Herman. Hadn't been any different under, under Sark. He was working punt returns with Ryan Niblett and Daley McCutcheon. So that was pretty much the extent of what I saw him do. It's interesting, too, you know, while we're out there and CJ and I did this, we had, this happened today. We can be at the same practice and watch the same groups, but if we watch them at different times, we can see different things. CJ mentioned, you know, some of the issues with quarterbacks because I wrote in my practice notes I sent to hang south for on texasfootball.com I thought the quarterbacks had a pretty solid day. So it just depends on when you're watching the drills and what's happening. But hey, Coach, I, I do want to go back. I don't want to poo poo the Bishop thing. We'll stay there. I want to get to a second. But with going back to the quarterback thing real quick, I, I, Rod and I used to talk about this. We talked about this when David Ash was going through his maturation process back in the day, because you'd hear about, you know, kind of riding that roller coaster. I think Arch is that point where quarterbacks get to it. The great ones get there, the really good ones get there. You. Every practice may not be perfect, it may not be to, to your standard, but at some point those guys stop having bad practices. I think, I think Arch is at that point where you're just. He's not having bad practices anymore.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, I think that's true. You know, again, as cj, I think related, related to us earlier, or maybe it was Bobby, the fact that, you know, the second half of the season was just unbelievable, you know, for Art.

[Child]

Yeah.

[Coach Shipley]

And it's going to take him a little while to get back up to the speed of things, you know, a bit. Not, not, not that he hasn't been of Course, throwing two receivers all summer, but once you get in the, you know, in the actual practice with coaches and defense, we don't have pads on yet. But, you know, I think, you know, you got to give a little grace, you know, to, to that situation. It's different. I'll tell you this. Just think about it. It's different with a helmet on.

[Jeff Howe]

Yeah.

[Coach Shipley]

You know, I mean, you think that's no big deal? No, it's. It's kind of a big deal. You've got a heavy. It's not, they're not as heavy as they used to be when I played, of course. But, you know, you got the face mask, you got things. I mean, it's, it's, it's just a little bit different. You know, it, it's going to take a little while to, to adjust to, you know, everything. And then when you get in pads, that's different. You know, you got shoulder pads on. You know, it's. You got a live rush coming at you. It's different. It's going to take a little time. But I, I think Arch will, will hit his stride much earlier this year. Let's hope that he did last year. I'm not concerned about it at all.

C.J. i want to go back to the Bishop thing. Go back to D training. Super chat on Jermaine Bishop again. I didn't watch as much of the receivers today as I did yesterday, but after watching and I again, you just. Some practices, you go out, you just notice certain guys more than you notice others. I feel like the strongest pairs of hands in the receiver room right now. You can make a case that is Jermaine Bishop and Kalik Lockett have the best, strongest, surest hands in the receiver room. I got, I just. When I watched Jermaine Bishop, the ball doesn't hit the ground. If it's in his, if it's in his catch radius, he's going to catch it.

[C.J.]

You're absolutely right. And what's interesting, and I noticed Cam Coleman and I believe Ryan Wingo did this today as well. You see it in the photo. There's no gloves on Jermaine Bishop. And I look for about the last decade, right? The whole thing with gloves was the advancement in technology and glove stickiness allows you to make some of the crate, like Odell Beckham catch. He's not making that catch bare handed. But we're seeing so many of these Texas wide receivers participate in practice without gloves. I don't know if that is something mentally to just help them visualize the ball coming in or watching the ball come into their hands if it makes them focus more on receiving the football rather than taking it for granted almost and starting to make their move after the catch. But that's something that I noticed in the spring with Jermaine Bishop as well, was the kid didn't care for gloves. And, you know, sometimes, and you know, it's obviously not apples. Apples here, Jeff, but when you swing a baseball bat without batting gloves, you sit there and you can feel when and where and how you're making good contact, and you can certainly feel when you're not making good contact. So adjustments have to come. I have to imagine not wearing gloves as a receiver is something that they can sit there and say, okay, I need to make sure that every point of my reception is pristine so I can make sure that it becomes practice to a point where I don't have to think about it anymore.

Coach where you come out on gloves.

[Coach Shipley]

CJ I'm just going to say that's a great point. My boys, Jordan and Jackson very rarely ever wore gloves. They just wanted the sensitivity of their hands, you know, to feel that ball coming in and knowing exactly where the ball was, you know, in their hands. And, you know, they wore towels, especially in the, the heat of the first of the season, to keep their hands dry. But, yeah, I think there's, you know, there's some things us men could compare it to, but there's nothing like the actual feeling of your skin, you know, with the ball coming in.

Somebody mentioned it in the chat. Paxton941 said, Bishop reminds me of D.J. johnson, coach. You were around Dejay during his time in Texas. Those are two different players. Dejay might have had more just, I don't know, a little more authority, just putting. Sticking a foot in the ground and getting vertical. But Bishop's definitely got more wiggle with the ball in his hands.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, was a thicker, especially thicker leg. Had those sprinter legs. You know, Dejay was. Yeah, he was a rare talent, in my opinion. Yeah, I think he reminds me. Bishop reminds me more of a guy who wore number one a couple of years ago. You know, I mean, guy that's not very big, but is sneaky fast, you know, in great hands and can get behind DBs in nothing flat. I think we're going to see Bishop rise up the depth chart and he's going to get some snaps and it's going to. I mean, obviously that's a stacked room, you know, with. With Trey Mosley in there and all. We've been hearing about Trey, you know, all summer long, even last spring, even last season, you know, so to shift gears a little bit. What we haven't, or I haven't talked to anybody on a live stream about Cam Colvin and your thoughts on him. Is he smooth? Is he polished? Is he. What. What is it? What was your first response to watching Cam Coleman out there catching passes?

[C.J.]

Oh, how much time you got, Coach? I, I wrote. I wrote something today that. Something about just watching Cam Coleman. He, he, he. He goes about playing the wide receiver position that I don't know if. Look, Texas had some really good wide receivers, right? Adnai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, you know, early or I guess later in the season, we. We quickly found out Matthew golden was going to be a very talented, you know, weapon for the NFL for, For Cam Coleman. Everything's smooth. Everything. Nothing looks like it needs a lot of energy for him. He leaps for balls at the high point and it comes down effortlessly with them. He catches footballs in stride, and that's something that I noticed today with him going in a route and then watching Ryan Wingo and Kali Clockett when the ball is above their head, you know, in. In this kind of area. A lot of young wide receivers will, you know, when they're running their route on an in route or outbreaking route, they'll jump to make sure that that ball is no longer above their head, but more in that chest area. As a result, jumping kind of derails the process of that stride. For him, it's just a pluck out of the air. And, Jeff, I think you mentioned that with Jermaine Bishop, too. I think Jermaine Bishop has that in him as well. But you put all of the. That together with Cam Coleman. Just how effortless, I think, is just the best way I could describe it. It looks different than anybody else in that room to me.

[Jeff Howe]

I. I hate to. I hate to even bring the name up because I know it's gonna get taken out of context, and that's fine. I can live with it. The only guy I can really compare Cam Coleman to just physically in a practice setting like this is Roy Williams. Because a guy. A guy that big, that's also that smooth.

Hey, Coach, you.

You've been around this a long time, Coach. You just don't see that many guys that are that big. And I'm trying to. Talking about terms of not just height, but length also. I mean, Cam's got that big catch radius. Guys are that big that are that smooth where there's no wasted movement. It's real fluid. But they've also got that ability where they've got that. That extra gear where they can. They can shift into it and hit that high gear. I'm not saying he's Roy Williams, but in this setting, that's kind of the only guy I could compare Cam to physically.

[Coach Shipley]

I haven't seen Cam, you know, obviously, personally yet. I haven't been to a practice, but the way C.J. was describing him, I was thinking I was watching Roy Williams in my mind, making those catches full stride, you know, and outrunning everybody to the end zone effortlessly. You know, that's exactly who I had in mind when you were describing him. Cj.

And that is, in my opinion, the most physically gifted wide receiver I've ever seen in the Texas uniform was Roy Williams. I know everybody's got their pick, but I mean that. I hadn't seen one. Didn't see one like him before, Coach. Haven't really seen one like him since. But Cam Coleman, physically, maybe the closest thing. Oh, absolutely, absolutely. It's the most exciting time of the year. You know, I mean, you, you, you've worked and you've worked and you've worked and you've worked and you work and it's time to open up presence almost at Christmas and see what all this work has come to. You know, the fruition of months and months and months and months of anticipation. Yeah, it's a great time of year for a coach. Great time of year for a coach.

I mean, you don't get much sleep

this time of year because you're up, you know, watching, watching the practice film and meeting and all that stuff, planning practice for the next day, adjusting practice as you see fit. But it is the most exciting time of the year for a coach.

Any nights on the office couch, coach?

[Coach Shipley]

Absolutely. There is no doubt. There is no doubt. That was before my wife could locate me on the phone sometimes. You know, my wife now has, you know, she could tell where I am 24 hours a day. Exactly. As far as the second part of that question, the second part of Rock or the first part of Rocky's question, actually, how did Justin Cryer look? I, I didn't. It's. This setting is so tough to get a real feel for linebackers because, I mean, a lot of their work is going to be done in pads. I'll say this though, cj, I watched that linebacker group for a little bit today, man. And again, I'll preface it by saying in this setting, I know when you get live periods and pads, everything changes. But you know, that top group right now is like Ty Anthony Smith, Justin Cryer, Rashin Biles is in that group. Brad Spence. But when, yeah, when you start getting cycling through and drills and you're starting to watch Tyler Atkinson and Rocky Cummings and Kosi Apollo just in terms of physical appearance, athleticism, physicality, there's very little to no drop off in this setting. Now, again, you got to have live periods and all that stuff. But I, the more I watch those young linebackers. C.J. i can't say enough about the job this staff did in the 26 cycle at linebacker. Like, you've got three guys that have a chance to play a lot of high leverage snaps for you for the next few years.

Yeah. All in different roles.

I think Tyler Atkinson is someone that I watched today a little bit and I came away encouraged because again, coming into the spring, he was a guy that I think everybody had circled saying he's one of the more anticipated players out of this freshman class. And then you didn't hear about a lot in the spring, the late spring going into something. You just didn't hear the name all too often. But I, I liked what I saw today from Tyler Atkinson. Of course, Kosiopola and Rocky Cummings are two guys that you just see photos of them walking around in street clothes. You're like, they already look like that, right? Like, shoot, put them in the middle of the field. But again, the roles are going to be a little different. Kosi, Paula, a little bit more off the edge. I envision them almost perfectly to what a Brad Spence role is currently going to be. Off the edge, kind of in that linebacker esque role. So that's encouraging. But you know, it, it's something that, you know, I, I don't know if it was a concern or just an unknown with this linebacking room. How many interchangeable pieces would you have to begin this season? Jeff? I leave two practices in week one and I know it's only, you know, basically shells, but I, I'm encouraged with the, the linebacking room that they'll be able to have more depth there earlier in the year than maybe I would have anticipated.

Texas keeps that under lock. You coach, you, you've been there. That practice schedule is one of those things that you know you've got it in your back pocket and it's. Don't you know, Gen Pop doesn't need to know about it. That is on a need to know basis. But I do know. I believe they're gonna go tomorrow. And especially now you got these acronym acclimation practices earlier. A lot of coaches want to get it out of the way before you start your normal schedule. CJ Crappy Farmer. I believe they're gonna go Friday, Saturday, day off Sunday, then Monday, Tuesday, and then probably after that you'll see them go with the Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. That's typically how Sark is done. Camp practices.

Yeah, they're. You, you mentioned it Friday, under the lights. Well, a little bit. You'll get some dust time in there for the Texas team. Saturday, we'll practice Sunday off. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday will be off and then we'll see how the team really gets going moving forward after that. But I, I'm just curious because we heard from Jelani McDonald a little bit today. I was like, hey, man, the heat affects you at all? Do you feel like, you know, you were prepared coming into, you know, 2:30pm workouts? And, and all of a sudden he goes because, yeah, Tory Becton ran us. I Mean, he ran us some more and he ran us some more after that all summer long. So, yeah, we're ready for this. So I'm sure these guys are really excited for morning practices or anything. When the sun's kind of like this

and set, you know, the practice schedule can, you know, it can change, you know, day to day. Well, I don't know about day to day, but, you know, anymore. But it used to, you know, you're like, okay, we got to get. We gotta. After a week or so, we gotta let our guys get their legs up underneath them. You know, we, you know, we're having a lot of guys cramping or whatever. And, you know, from what I understand, coach said that, that they had, you know, the fewest cramps at this point that they've had, I think during this time here, if I'm not mistaken. But yeah, so. So coaches, you know, they're going to keep that schedule in their hip pocket, I can tell you that. A couple of months ago, it was already made out. This is our. Yeah, this is our proposed practice schedule. But it can change, and it will change depending on, you know, how the players are responding and what the coaches feel like they need to do to help the team get the best out of each and every practice.

Coach, back in. Back in your days running high school programs, during, during two days, did you like, taking one of those practices or, hey, we're gonna do a mile run and then you, like, trick the team and now we're going to the pool or go eat watermelon or whatever. Did you like that or were there no time. Time for shenanigans on a. Oh, no,

we always did that. We always did that.

[Jeff Howe]

We would have the pool reserved and nobody would know but the coaches. Yeah. And we'd have a bus sitting out there. And, you know, the funnest time is. Is an off season when it snows. When I was at Brown, when Jackson was playing, I mean, off season was how we made our football team. You know, you bust your tail every single day and it's snowing and we're like, I'm like, forget this. We're going to go have a snowball fight, you know, and I still have players talk about that, you know, because we didn't. Our motto was, we don't take days off, you know, unless it's snowy. I did that at Coppell as well. That's always, you know, just a fun change, you know, what's. What's 1 hour, 45 minutes going to change, you know, in the next season let's, let's have some fun, make some memories and have team building.

Team building that, that C.J. that used to be the best part to it is a second practice and usually it's about four days in where everybody's just dragging you out how to practice in pads and it's like all right get on the bus where we go they take it us out of town going to make us run back to school now going to the pool and they got watermelon all kinds of stuff there so nice thing off I

like I'll get Bobby on the phone say OTF needs some team team building at a bar downtown with about 12 Miller Lights.

Ah you know I was, I was not, not gonna lie. I was feeling a little loopy after being out in the sun today. So I, I wouldn't, I wouldn't have said no if that was on the agenda. I'll put it that way. Tanner Frazier 333177 with the Super Chat thank you for the super chat said hearing Manning missed multiple gimme throws again today. Come on man. He has got to get that cleaned up for this team to reach its ceiling. CJ I wrote about this over on Texas Football.com I don't want to belabor the point too much because we've already talked quite a bit about arts on the live stream but you know if you look at, if you and again pff, it's not the be all end all but it's better than what we used to have which was nothing. But if you look at Arch's throws in that short game with pff Class of Pro Football Focus classifies as a short throw zero to nine yards down the field. His grades and ratings and completion percentage, everything in that part of the field was significantly worse than everything else. I mean he was one of the best intermediate and deep ball quarterbacks in the country last year.

It's okay throwing the ball behind the line of scrimmage got better there. But yeah, that does need to get cleaned up. I wouldn't you see that you might have seen different when I watched Arch today. And again I didn't watch every throw Arch made today. I didn't see him miss multiple gimme throws. That may have been the case but I'm, I'm at the point where I'm not going to freak out. I did like the fact that there was a point. I think it was during that one of those special teams periods. The quarterbacks were just working. It was just quarterbacks throwing a cam Coleman was down there catching passes. So I did like the fact that they're working on that a little bit. Sark knows Arch needs to get better. Arch knows he needs to get better. Yeah, I wouldn't, there's nothing, there's nothing short of a practice where every single throw Arch through to the defense. There's nothing short of that that you're going to tell me that I'm going to freak out about Arch Manning and, and can.

[C.J.]

Yeah. And again, I, I, I mentioned that on the offset is hey, practice too, right. These guys are still trying to get familiar with one another with helmets on, with, you know, kind of the spider pads or whatever they they wear now in these team settings they've been throwing all offseason. There should be rapport. And again, some of these incompletions were on the backup quarterback. Some of these incompletions that I saw were on just drops from the wide receivers. So when I talk about more passes hitting the ground today than yesterday, and again, maybe I just saw it at a bad time for, for practice today. It wasn't 100, Arch. And I don't sit here and I, from what I saw today, what I saw yesterday, I am not worried about the quarterback at the University of Texas. I, I am a hundred percent go, there's no reservations right now. But those gimmes, I think right now is, you know, it's in the back pocket at least to sit there and say, okay, did they improve definitively from a year ago? We'll have to wait and see, Coach.

That's one of those things too. By the way, C.J. to your point about drops, Arch had a drop rate on short pass attempts. I think it was 10 last year. It was one of the highest in the sec. It was third, third or fourth highest in the sec. So that didn't help. To your point. But Coach, when you, when you have disconnects like that, it's never one entity to blame. And that's one thing, you know, as I've gone on, you know, covering this program and you're trying to, you know, you watch games and you try to watch it afterwards. That's one thing I've grown conscious of just talking to you, talking to enough receivers and quarterbacks, you may watch the game and in the middle of it, oh, well, that's the quarterback's fault. Well, no, because actually you checked and the receiver missed the check and he didn't run the right route. So the quarterback's throwing the ball where he's supposed to, but the receiver wasn't there, or the receiver in the right route and the ball was late, or everything looked good and protection broke down. So it's not just, yes, Arch needs to improve, but it's not just one entity that's responsible for that stuff.

[Coach Shipley]

Yeah, I, I don't know that I've ever seen, you know, a fall camp in high school or in college where this doesn't happen. I mean, it just happens. You're not gonna, you're not gonna complete every pass, every play, every day. It's just, you know, these things happen. And I've coached some great quarterbacks. I mean, really, really good Division 1 quarterbacks. And it just, you know, people have those days sometimes where something is just off a little bit. You watch a film and you say, hey, you know, you're dropping your arm, you know your left foot's planted, you know, incorrect or whatever. You know, you just go back to the basics. You just go back to the fundamentals. You know, high school coaching, I tell coaches, I told my coaches all the time this time of year, stance and alignment, stance in alignment, stance in alignment. You know, I mean, you go back to the fundamentals, you know, and, and Arch is smart enough to figure out what he's doing, and the coaching staff is smart enough to figure out what's going on. I'm not worried one, one second about it.

C.J. we talked about this the other day. Especially. It's going to be this way. Once you get into the scrimmage portions, those, those camp scrimmages, which we know how important those are. If Arch doesn't throw an interception or the quarterbacks don't throw any interceptions, you're thinking, man, that's, that's great. But I'm thinking, actually, that's probably not great because that means defense isn't getting their hands on the ball. So it's, it's that, it's that give and take in camp.

Yeah.

[C.J.]

Got to get hands on balls for the defense. Got to make sure that they don't on the offense. Right, Coach?

[Coach Shipley]

No doubt. I mean, it's, it's a, it's somebody's going to win and somebody's going to lose on every snap. You know, it all depends on your perspective, what side of the ball you're on.

[C.J.]

I like offense, so I'm, I'm sitting here saying, no interceptions, give me all the touchdowns. Right. But no, that, that's part of it. And I think the biggest thing for me is when those live settings are there for Arch Manning, what does he look like? Timing wise, that's the biggest thing for me because I know when the lights are at their brightest, especially towards what we saw at the back end of last year, blah, blah, blah, blah. But he's a gamer, man, more so than I thought he would have ever been in his career. Taking hits, delivering hits, physicality, putting the team and the offense on his back with his legs. I, I didn't know that was part of his game until he was really in the fire a year ago. Now it's all about, well, if he's making layups, if he's at the free throw line making free throws and he's already Shaquille o', Neal, well, shoot, he's going to be a total freak if those layups and gimmes start going in.

C.J. you said you like offense. I like defense. I'm one of those sick people. You remember that Patriots, Rams, Super bowl, like, It was like 10 to 3 or whatever.

That was the worst game of all time.

I was, well, that's, I was off of social media. I'm watching the game. I mean, this is awesome. It's defensive football and they're trying to run the ball and the chess match back and forth. I didn't know until I fired up the Twitter machine. I forgot. Oh, I, Nobody told me this game sucked. I didn't get the memo during the game, but apparently everybody hated it, so I was not in that camp with you, C.J. so we, as we wind down here, C.J.

I, There's a couple things we haven't touched on that we need to. Cole Hudson. The Cole Hudson situation, he. He's eligible. He's good to go. Bobby Burton. Bobby reported that over on texas football.com a little bit ago. Cole Hudson's good to go. Could rejoin the team as early as tomorrow, but we'll see if and when he's back on the practice field. But he's good to go. I've heard Texas State's had a couple of players that have gotten their TROs and gotten their clearance. So G.J. kenny's getting a couple guys back. Kurt Signetti's gotten a couple guys back. So all that stuff is starting to trickle in. We're starting to hear about, so should hear about Cole Hudson. I would say probably in the next practice or two, maybe it's early next week, but that's barring something unforeseen, that's good to go. It's going to happen. And CJ I said it in the chat when the live stream started I'll just end with this. After watching a period or two of the defensive line today, I am full on 100% pulling the horn on the Justice Terry hype train. I am, I'm there with everybody. His intensity, his intent, the first step. It is, it's, it looks, it looks exactly like you hoped it would for Justice Terry going into year two.

I'm so glad you said that, Jeff, because I, I put all my chips in the middle on Justice Terry and we had the clip. Matthew, real quick, I don't know if you can find it. I tweeted it out about hero KANU earlier today. He said the G word, talking about justice, terror. He said he's a generational talent. That's, I mean, that's a lot. But you see him today and you see him at £290. That's again a 22 pound increase from about this time a year ago. And it doesn't look like it slowed him down. He looks faster, he looks more explosive.
