There are three questions that we don't expect Texas to answer by the time Camp is done. What are those three questions we'll get into them on this latest edition of On Texas Football, brought to you by Prize Picks. I'm Jeff Howe, joined by Hank south and CJ Vogel. Guys, three questions. Again, a lot is going to get answered about this team in the next couple of weeks, but there are three questions, guys, that we probably don't expect to be answer. Question number one is will the offensive line be better? C.J. i know you've done a lot of deep dives in the off season about the offensive line and whether Lawrence Seymour wins the left guard job or not, whether this offensive line can get a push when it matters, whether they can protect Arch better, that's not something we're really going to know until the opener on September 5th against Texas State and probably not until that second game of the season against Ohio State.

Yeah, that Ohio State test again is going to be huge for the Longhorns. We saw it a year ago where they actually ran the ball pretty effectively. One of the more effective running games that Texas had the entire season came against Ohio State, believe it or not. But it didn't tell the whole story right. Again, there were glimpses, glimpses of good things and bad things in that game, but it didn't tell you the whole story of what was ahead. But going into this year, there's, there's one really key factor for me, that offensive line is experienced across the board. You have guys that have played or been in college football significantly longer than than what the the 2025 offensive line looked like. So for your tackle situation, you feel really good with Lawrence Seymour and Trevor Goosby. And of course there's experience in the middle, even with that left guard spot up in the air. That is the biggest differential from a year ago. Now it's about figuring out how they work together and how Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkeesian can work to their benefit. Something that I think took too long last year.

Hank, what C.J. said is a really big part of it because I went and looked at some of the numbers, you know, Lawrence Seymour we've talked about. Okay, from a height standpoint, maybe not, you know, six two, he's listed on the roster, maybe the arms are a little bit short, really good in pass protection. Like he's got a track record as a good pass protector. But Hank, I do wonder in in a run game scheme where you have a lot of zone runs, he didn't block a ton of zone runs at Western Kentucky. And you also factor in the tight end is going to be a big part of this. There's Just so many pieces, Hank. I just don't expect this running game to be clicking on all cylinders by the time we get to the end of camp. At least not to the point where everybody should feel like, yeah, we definitely know they're going to be better.

Yeah, there's like, there's no substitute for, for live action in game reps. Obviously, you know, going up against the Texas defense, that defensive front is going to be good practice and good test. But until you get into a game simulation against Texas State, really against Ohio State, you're not going to fully know what you have. But to go back to CJ's point, the experience, and if nothing else, you know, if Lawrence Seymour, you know, if he's not what maybe Texas thought he was, or, you know, if he does struggle a little bit, there's competition in the room. You know, they have plenty of guys that are coming in. We'll see what happens with Cole Hudson and everything going on with the injunction. But then, you know, you've got several other guys. Jaden Chapman that was there in the spring, Jackson Christian, I mean, they've got depth built in now, and the key is to stay healthy this spring and or this fall throughout the month of August and get to the season like that because, you know, competition obviously raises level of play for everybody and that's going to be key. But really across the board offensive line play should get better because like teacher mentioned experience, there's a lot of snaps and you know, maybe not as much scheme for Lawrence Seymour, but he has experience. His best game, one of his best games at LS or at Western Kentucky was against lsu. So. And Sark mentioned that in the, in the spring as well. You know, look at, look at the competition he faced and when did he did well and against LSU did well. That was a check mark in their book. So depth, experience, it's going to help this Texas offensive line of that competition even more.

So also got the kind of break glass in case of emergency. Could you kick Jordan Coleman inside if you need to, to get some more, some more talents, more link, some more athleticism. Guys, let's go to question number two. Is KJ Lacy going to be a suitable backup quarterback for the Longhorns? And I want to get into this because our own Jerry Hamilton asked Steve Sarkeesian about this at SEC media days, and it's, uh, some really good stuff from Sark right here on KJ Lacy's development throughout the spring.

Yeah, you know, KJ is a guy that, as we've gone through this with him. And I felt this way in high school. And as we've grown and gone, you know, I, I hate comparing guys because it's never fair, but he's got a lot of qualities. He reminds me a lot of Bryce Young, you know, and obviously a bit similar in stature. Both natural passers, both very instinctual, both are sneaky with their legs and can hurt you with their legs when they get there. And now it's the maturation process of understanding schematically. And where do I, where do I play when I play so well? Off schedule, but yet play on schedule so that I can play off schedule, if that makes sense. And so I think he's kind of learning that as we go. I felt like there were some moments in spring where he was fantastic. There were moments in spring where there were learning moments. I felt like as we've been on the grass with the guys now for the past, you know, I think it's now five weeks or six weeks or so, whatever it's been this summer. I've seen the best version of KJ Lacy this summer, and that's encouraging to us that he took the stuff we wanted him to get better at from spring and apply it in the summer, and we've seen that. I think he'd be a dangerous guy if he got in the game because of his off schedule stuff that he can do, but also his ability just to throw the ball and rhythm and in timing. He's a natural passer that way. And he's thrown a ton of passes. In high school, they threw a ton of balls. And so it's very comfortable and natural for him to do that.

C.J. one thing that stood out and that answer from Sark, he said he's seen the best version of KJ Lacy. In your opinion, is the best version of KJ Lacy good enough to help Texas win a football game right now? If he's called upon to win a

football game right now, yes. To win multiple, to win against Texas A M or Oklahoma. That I don't know. And I hope that we don't figure it out this year, to be fair. I, you know, no disrespect to KJ but look, I, you know, of course you hope Arch stays healthy. You hope that Arch is the guy that leads this team. But we've seen, basically we've talked about in the chat, what is it, 18. I lost 20 years for Texas. The backup quarterback has been needed at some point during the season. If Texas plays 15 or 16 games, the likeliness that you're going to need at least some sort of meaningful snap from Lacey is very high. So I do think what we heard out of the spring was very telling, and it was a continued theme of when he's on the field, the ball moves down. And again, it's not the most orthodox way. He's not going to be the most pristine when it comes to reads or timing. But they find ways to make plays, and that's kind of the point guard that we see out of him at times. We've talked about that in the spring. So to hear, again, some of that Bryce Young talk, and I know it's a loose comparison from Steve Sarkeesian, but to hear that from him, it just tells me that, again, he does it in his own way, but the ball finds a way to move down the field, and points are found, ways to be added to the board.

Hank, C.J. mentioned it, and we heard it there from Sark in. In the clip. He. He's throwing out the Bryce Young comparisons. Not directly, because it's not fair to compare anybody to a Heisman winner. But, Hank, you saw K.J. lacy in high school. Do you see some, like, legitimate similarities between K.J. lacy's game on the field and what we saw from Bryce Young at bama?

Yeah, I mean, certainly Bryce Young, he was the ultimate kind of, you know.

Can make plays happen when things break down like he, he, he was a creator and, and you see that in K.J. lacey's game I think. And you know K.J. lacy, when we, when we interviewed him after he committed back in the summer of 2023, he said the first time Stark watched his film he wrote Bryce 2.0. And so this has been a comp that that's been going but you look at them, they're very similar measurables. They're kind of built the same. You, you would, you wouldn't look at them and think oh that's, that's a big time quarterback. Or you know he, you know the, the athletic, the measurables aren't really there. But like C.J. mentioned, like we, like Stark mentioned, the ball move like he's a gamer when, when the lights come on he's going to move the ball down the field and he's not going to put you in situations where, where he makes mistakes or turns the ball over. He's, he's just very, he's an efficient quarterback and I noted this on a video recently when I saw him play. I mean he played at Saraland High School, which is a big time program in the state of Alabama. Not comparing that to an SEC stadium or anything but I went and saw him play a top 10 high school game when Texas was out at Alabama back in 2023. They had the light show and everything. The crowd was packed, it was standing room only. Just they were filming a documentary. Like he's been in the limelight and, and I think, I don't think the moment would be too big for him if he did need to come in and, and, you know, help win a game or relieve Arch if something were to happen. I don't think the moment would be too big for him, especially having a year under his belt in the system. He has that staff continuity with A.J. milway, who recruited him. I mean, he, he's, he's very comfortable where he's at. So he, he moves the ball down the field. He's, he's, you know, he's, he's not, he doesn't have the same kind of big arm as Arch, but he makes the throws needed and he's not going to hurt you if he has to come in.

Yeah. Sark has had to use the backup quarterback every year he's been at Texas at some point. But I'm with C.J. i hope we don't find out to what extent K.J. lacy's needed this year. Hoping the best for a healthy year from Arch Manning.

Also hoping guys for a better year on the past defense. And that is our third question that I don't think is going to get answered during camp. We'll have to wait till the game start. Is hiring Will Muschamp? Is that the answer to fixing the past defenses? C.J. we've been over the numbers. Other than 2024, where Texas had one of the best past defenses in the country. Statistically, it was just kind of off kilter under PK And I think last year, you know, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, you can look at some of those games where I think that was kind of the last draw for Sark and wanting to make the change. CJ we expect it to be more aggressive. Guys are going to take more chances. But will it be the be all, end all answer, just bringing back Will Muschamp? I don't know. Something we won't really know until the ball gets kicked off on September 5th.

Yeah, it was kind of bizarre a year ago how as the season progressed, you got looser and more sloppy in the back end of the secondary, right? And you know, you look at the second half against Arkansas, second half, fourth quarter, really against Vanderbilt, you sit there and say, well, this shouldn't really be the case. Texas is getting busted coverages. The Georgia game added plenty of bus coverages and that had always kind of been one of the focal points of a PK defense was, hey, you're gonna have to earn every single yard. You might be able to pick up five or six underneath, but you're not going to get the 30, 40, 50 yard touchdown. That just breaks the back of a defense. And that really reared its ugly head late in 2025. But knowing that you have a pass rush the way that Texas is set up to have in 26, it makes all the sense in the world to be more aggressive on the outside, to be more in your face, play more press man, play more just tight coverage to allow those windows to shrink, to make tips overthrows more likely in which Tyson has been very good at creating opportunities for turnovers in that department. So I really like this group of defensive backs and corners. I think with Kate Phillips, a Bo Masco, Grayson, Littleton, that group right there, they play the football as well as Any group of corners that we've seen collectively at Texas. But what about that safety? That's the biggest question for me. We know it's headlined by Jelani McDonald, but boy, that competition is going to be just as highly watched on my end as that left guard position when it comes to who plays next to Jelani McDonald to begin the season.

And Hank, this is the, of the three questions, this is the one where I wouldn't look past that opener against Texas State. I'm not saying Texas State's the best offense Texas is going to see this year, but you bring back one of the best non power forward quarterbacks in the country and Brad Jackson got 2,000 yard receivers, a pretty good offensive line. We know GJ Kenny can coach offense. Hank, I'm not saying if they slow Texas State down that they've got the answers, but if Brad Jackson goes out there and lights it up in the opener, I'm, I'm willing to say that's a red flag if, if it's just the wheels are off in the opener, it could be either a long year or a really, really steep hill decline for the past.

Yeah, yeah. I mean it'll be a good, you know, barometer for, for how they're going to perform because if, like you said, if they, if they light Texas up September 5th, you can't feel very comfortable about Julian saying and Jeremiah Smith and the arsenal of wide receivers Ohio State's about to bring to Austin the next week. So, you know, it's just going to be, have some, it's going to be something we have to see because you know, I look back to 2023, Texas didn't play their best against Rice and JT Daniels week one. Then they went out and upset Alabama and Tuscaloosa. So you can never really measure it fully. You know, it doesn't always translate. But yeah, that, that's going to be, that's not going to be something we have an answer to until really they play Ohio State because that's going to be probably outside of maybe Florida and Texas A and M, the best wide receivers they'll see this season. So yeah, I, I do think Will Muschamp certainly gives you an answer there in the personnel Texas has. If it can all come together, if Jonah Williams can take that step, we all think he can. I think they made great moves bringing in Bo Masco who can certainly shore up one side after, you know, you lose Manny Muhammad, Grayson, Littleton, we saw what he did as a true freshman. And then Kate Phillips has a ton of upside. So I think, I think he's the answer. But again, we're not going to know that answer. No for sure until Ohio State.

Yeah, you've, you've done really well against Jeremiah Smith in two meetings and he's already said at Big Ten meeting days he's got the Texas game circle has had it circled all offseason, so we'll see how it plays out. Texas gets back on the practice field this week, all working toward the season opener on Sept. 5 against Texas State, where we will start to see if these three questions get answered. Again, a lot is going to get answered about this team in the next couple of weeks, but there are three questions, guys, that we probably don't expect to be answer. Question number one is will the offensive line be better? C.J. i know you've done a lot of deep dives in the off season about the offensive line and whether Lawrence Seymour wins the left guard job or not, whether this offensive line can get a push when it matters, whether they can protect Arch better, that's not something we're really going to know until the opener on September 5th against Texas State and probably not until that second game of the season against Ohio State.

Yeah, that Ohio State test again is going to be huge for the Longhorns. We saw it a year ago where they actually ran the ball pretty effectively. One of the more effective running games that Texas had the entire season came against Ohio State, believe it or not. But it didn't tell the whole story right. Again, there were glimpses, glimpses of good things and bad things in that game, but it didn't tell you the whole story of what was ahead. But going into this year, there's, there's one really key factor for me, that offensive line is experienced across the board. You have guys that have played or been in college football significantly longer than than what the the 2025 offensive line looked like. So for your tackle situation, you feel really good with Lawrence Seymour and Trevor Goosby. And of course there's experience in the middle, even with that left guard spot up in the air. That is the biggest differential from a year ago. Now it's about figuring out how they work together and how Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkeesian can work to their benefit. Something that I think took too long last year.

Hank, what C.J. said is a really big part of it because I went and looked at some of the numbers, you know, Lawrence Seymour we've talked about. Okay, from a height standpoint, maybe not, you know, six two, he's listed on the roster, maybe the arms are a little bit short, really good in pass protection. Like he's got a track record as a good pass protector. But Hank, I do wonder in in a run game scheme where you have a lot of zone runs, he didn't block a ton of zone runs at Western Kentucky. And you also factor in the tight end is going to be a big part of this. There's Just so many pieces, Hank. I just don't expect this running game to be clicking on all cylinders by the time we get to the end of camp. At least not to the point where everybody should feel like, yeah, we definitely know they're going to be better.

Yeah, there's like, there's no substitute for, for live action in game reps. Obviously, you know, going up against the Texas defense, that defensive front is going to be good practice and good test. But until you get into a game simulation against Texas State, really against Ohio State, you're not going to fully know what you have. But to go back to CJ's point, the experience, and if nothing else, you know, if Lawrence Seymour, you know, if he's not what maybe Texas thought he was, or, you know, if he does struggle a little bit, there's competition in the room. You know, they have plenty of guys that are coming in. We'll see what happens with Cole Hudson and everything going on with the injunction. But then, you know, you've got several other guys. Jaden Chapman that was there in the spring, Jackson Christian, I mean, they've got depth built in now, and the key is to stay healthy this spring and or this fall throughout the month of August and get to the season like that because, you know, competition obviously raises level of play for everybody and that's going to be key. But really across the board offensive line play should get better because like teacher mentioned experience, there's a lot of snaps and you know, maybe not as much scheme for Lawrence Seymour, but he has experience. His best game, one of his best games at LS or at Western Kentucky was against lsu. So. And Sark mentioned that in the, in the spring as well. You know, look at, look at the competition he faced and when did he did well and against LSU did well. That was a check mark in their book. So depth, experience, it's going to help this Texas offensive line of that competition even more.

So also got the kind of break glass in case of emergency. Could you kick Jordan Coleman inside if you need to, to get some more, some more talents, more link, some more athleticism. Guys, let's go to question number two. Is KJ Lacy going to be a suitable backup quarterback for the Longhorns? And I want to get into this because our own Jerry Hamilton asked Steve Sarkeesian about this at SEC media days, and it's, uh, some really good stuff from Sark right here on KJ Lacy's development throughout the spring.

Yeah, you know, KJ is a guy that, as we've gone through this with him. And I felt this way in high school. And as we've grown and gone, you know, I, I hate comparing guys because it's never fair, but he's got a lot of qualities. He reminds me a lot of Bryce Young, you know, and obviously a bit similar in stature. Both natural passers, both very instinctual, both are sneaky with their legs and can hurt you with their legs when they get there. And now it's the maturation process of understanding schematically. And where do I, where do I play when I play so well? Off schedule, but yet play on schedule so that I can play off schedule, if that makes sense. And so I think he's kind of learning that as we go. I felt like there were some moments in spring where he was fantastic. There were moments in spring where there were learning moments. I felt like as we've been on the grass with the guys now for the past, you know, I think it's now five weeks or six weeks or so, whatever it's been this summer. I've seen the best version of KJ Lacy this summer, and that's encouraging to us that he took the stuff we wanted him to get better at from spring and apply it in the summer, and we've seen that. I think he'd be a dangerous guy if he got in the game because of his off schedule stuff that he can do, but also his ability just to throw the ball and rhythm and in timing. He's a natural passer that way. And he's thrown a ton of passes. In high school, they threw a ton of balls. And so it's very comfortable and natural for him to do that.

C.J. one thing that stood out and that answer from Sark, he said he's seen the best version of KJ Lacy. In your opinion, is the best version of KJ Lacy good enough to help Texas win a football game right now? If he's called upon to win a

football game right now, yes. To win multiple, to win against Texas A M or Oklahoma. That I don't know. And I hope that we don't figure it out this year, to be fair. I, you know, no disrespect to KJ but look, I, you know, of course you hope Arch stays healthy. You hope that Arch is the guy that leads this team. But we've seen, basically we've talked about in the chat, what is it, 18. I lost 20 years for Texas. The backup quarterback has been needed at some point during the season. If Texas plays 15 or 16 games, the likeliness that you're going to need at least some sort of meaningful snap from Lacey is very high. So I do think what we heard out of the spring was very telling, and it was a continued theme of when he's on the field, the ball moves down. And again, it's not the most orthodox way. He's not going to be the most pristine when it comes to reads or timing. But they find ways to make plays, and that's kind of the point guard that we see out of him at times. We've talked about that in the spring. So to hear, again, some of that Bryce Young talk, and I know it's a loose comparison from Steve Sarkeesian, but to hear that from him, it just tells me that, again, he does it in his own way, but the ball finds a way to move down the field, and points are found, ways to be added to the board.

Hank, C.J. mentioned it, and we heard it there from Sark in. In the clip. He. He's throwing out the Bryce Young comparisons. Not directly, because it's not fair to compare anybody to a Heisman winner. But, Hank, you saw K.J. lacy in high school. Do you see some, like, legitimate similarities between K.J. lacy's game on the field and what we saw from Bryce Young at bama?

Can make plays happen when things break down like he, he, he was a creator and, and you see that in K.J. lacey's game I think. And you know K.J. lacy, when we, when we interviewed him after he committed back in the summer of 2023, he said the first time Stark watched his film he wrote Bryce 2.0. And so this has been a comp that that's been going but you look at them, they're very similar measurables. They're kind of built the same. You, you would, you wouldn't look at them and think oh that's, that's a big time quarterback. Or you know he, you know the, the athletic, the measurables aren't really there. But like C.J. mentioned, like we, like Stark mentioned, the ball move like he's a gamer when, when the lights come on he's going to move the ball down the field and he's not going to put you in situations where, where he makes mistakes or turns the ball over. He's, he's just very, he's an efficient quarterback and I noted this on a video recently when I saw him play. I mean he played at Saraland High School, which is a big time program in the state of Alabama. Not comparing that to an SEC stadium or anything but I went and saw him play a top 10 high school game when Texas was out at Alabama back in 2023. They had the light show and everything. The crowd was packed, it was standing room only. Just they were filming a documentary. Like he's been in the limelight and, and I think, I don't think the moment would be too big for him if he did need to come in and, and, you know, help win a game or relieve Arch if something were to happen. I don't think the moment would be too big for him, especially having a year under his belt in the system. He has that staff continuity with A.J. milway, who recruited him. I mean, he, he's, he's very comfortable where he's at. So he, he moves the ball down the field. He's, he's, you know, he's, he's not, he doesn't have the same kind of big arm as Arch, but he makes the throws needed and he's not going to hurt you if he has to come in.

Also hoping guys for a better year on the past defense. And that is our third question that I don't think is going to get answered during camp. We'll have to wait till the game start. Is hiring Will Muschamp? Is that the answer to fixing the past defenses? C.J. we've been over the numbers. Other than 2024, where Texas had one of the best past defenses in the country. Statistically, it was just kind of off kilter under PK And I think last year, you know, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, you can look at some of those games where I think that was kind of the last draw for Sark and wanting to make the change. CJ we expect it to be more aggressive. Guys are going to take more chances. But will it be the be all, end all answer, just bringing back Will Muschamp? I don't know. Something we won't really know until the ball gets kicked off on September 5th.

Yeah, it was kind of bizarre a year ago how as the season progressed, you got looser and more sloppy in the back end of the secondary, right? And you know, you look at the second half against Arkansas, second half, fourth quarter, really against Vanderbilt, you sit there and say, well, this shouldn't really be the case. Texas is getting busted coverages. The Georgia game added plenty of bus coverages and that had always kind of been one of the focal points of a PK defense was, hey, you're gonna have to earn every single yard. You might be able to pick up five or six underneath, but you're not going to get the 30, 40, 50 yard touchdown. That just breaks the back of a defense. And that really reared its ugly head late in 2025. But knowing that you have a pass rush the way that Texas is set up to have in 26, it makes all the sense in the world to be more aggressive on the outside, to be more in your face, play more press man, play more just tight coverage to allow those windows to shrink, to make tips overthrows more likely in which Tyson has been very good at creating opportunities for turnovers in that department. So I really like this group of defensive backs and corners. I think with Kate Phillips, a Bo Masco, Grayson, Littleton, that group right there, they play the football as well as Any group of corners that we've seen collectively at Texas. But what about that safety? That's the biggest question for me. We know it's headlined by Jelani McDonald, but boy, that competition is going to be just as highly watched on my end as that left guard position when it comes to who plays next to Jelani McDonald to begin the season.

And Hank, this is the, of the three questions, this is the one where I wouldn't look past that opener against Texas State. I'm not saying Texas State's the best offense Texas is going to see this year, but you bring back one of the best non power forward quarterbacks in the country and Brad Jackson got 2,000 yard receivers, a pretty good offensive line. We know GJ Kenny can coach offense. Hank, I'm not saying if they slow Texas State down that they've got the answers, but if Brad Jackson goes out there and lights it up in the opener, I'm, I'm willing to say that's a red flag if, if it's just the wheels are off in the opener, it could be either a long year or a really, really steep hill decline for the past.

Yeah, yeah. I mean it'll be a good, you know, barometer for, for how they're going to perform because if, like you said, if they, if they light Texas up September 5th, you can't feel very comfortable about Julian saying and Jeremiah Smith and the arsenal of wide receivers Ohio State's about to bring to Austin the next week. So, you know, it's just going to be, have some, it's going to be something we have to see because you know, I look back to 2023, Texas didn't play their best against Rice and JT Daniels week one. Then they went out and upset Alabama and Tuscaloosa. So you can never really measure it fully. You know, it doesn't always translate. But yeah, that, that's going to be, that's not going to be something we have an answer to until really they play Ohio State because that's going to be probably outside of maybe Florida and Texas A and M, the best wide receivers they'll see this season. So yeah, I, I do think Will Muschamp certainly gives you an answer there in the personnel Texas has. If it can all come together, if Jonah Williams can take that step, we all think he can. I think they made great moves bringing in Bo Masco who can certainly shore up one side after, you know, you lose Manny Muhammad, Grayson, Littleton, we saw what he did as a true freshman. And then Kate Phillips has a ton of upside. So I think, I think he's the answer. But again, we're not going to know that answer. No for sure until Ohio State.
