We're also 36 days away from kickoff, so we're going to have special guest Alex De La Torre join us here in probably about 10 minutes or so. We'll be talking to him, a former number 36. But first, guys, we may be 36 days away from kickoff, but we're little over 24 hours from an important announcement. Jerry Hamilton.

Yeah, I mean, the top target left for Texas that is remains uncommitted and that's Landon Williams Callis. He will announce his this college decision Saturday night around 6:45 or 7. And that's at the Rosenberg Civic Center. So yes, this is a big deal in Richmond Rosenberg. I'll be there. I'm actually, I'm so excited about this announcement. First of all, I want to say that because I, I, when you've been in the business this long, there are very few things you say, okay, this is going to be a really big deal. This is going to be a really big deal. Like this he these g. Not only is Landon Williams callous, but Michael Lewis, obviously his uncle Jaqu and James Rogers, he's related too. They are all kind of hometown heroes. And I've said it before, that's going to make this event so cool. I think Lidell Wilson, the former Lamar Consolidated coach who coached Michael Lewis and the Rogers Twins, he'll be in attendance. You know, Richmond Randle fans who have been to who have had great the last two seasons, two great seasons. I mean, it's going to be a kind of a big celebration in, in Richmond Rosenberg. It's going to be the Rosenberg Civic center and I will be there. I'm very excited about this just being part being there for this. I think it's going to be really cool event, really cool ceremony just because of how big this is. In the community as far as his decision, Bobby. I mean, look, surprises happen in recruiting. We haven't really heard anything that back us off saying Texas has been in a good spot. Does that mean something could change in the last 24 hours? It always can in recruiting, but we haven't heard anything to push us away at this point.

Yeah.

And even though A M is allegedly attempting to make a last, you know, big effort, I mean he, Marcel Reed is tweeting him and other players, etc, that's all fine and good. I'm not so sure that that's. I, I just, I, I feel like that that may be one of those things that Trooper Taylor's trying to put together as a, as a, as a, a coach that likes to recruit pretty heavily. I look my take on this and one of the things that I find interesting in, in all of this discussion as it relates to a great running back like this, and you and I touched on it briefly yesterday, Jerry, is, you know, what's the value of a great running back? And I, I was, we, we talked about, we're doing the top 25 players, Longhorns of the last, what, 35 years of modern, modern football, basically. Right. Modern era. And I had five running backs in that top 25. Yeah. Okay, here, here's my take on this. A great college running back is worth more than a great pro running back is in the pros. And I think that that's the case when you talk about. I just, I feel like that's a problem with the recruiting rankings because some people have this guy as a four star. Jerry, he's not, I mean, how do you have 61 touchdowns as a junior, 3, 500 yards rushing? He can, he can hit you from short deep. I mean, he's it. How do you not rank this guy as one of the top handful of players in college in high school football? And by my, my point being a great college running back is worth more than a great pro running back to his team on, on level because there are greater disparities in talent level. Right. And I'm just telling you the, the value of a great running back is it's, it's tough to beat. And I'm not saying it's bigger or more than a quarterback, anything like that, but certainly in the college game it takes on increased importance.

Jerry Hamilton
Well, I mean, look, and we're going to get to your questions. Kate, Stuart Cisco on him. You know, we're gonna, we're gonna find out this year. Mean, think about, look at who Texas is playing at Running back Ahmad Hardy, assuming he's healthy. Jaden B. Ken Lacy. I mean those guys are. I agree with you 100%, Bobby. I mean you, in the college game, if you have a running back that's a difference maker for you or a running back room that is has multiple pros in it, I think, I think it's much more valuable than in the NFL just because of the game. I mean in the, you brought up in the NFL everybody has a great defensive line, right? It's like they're all pros but, and they're all high level pros who are starting in the NFL. I mean they're amongst the best players in the world. The trickle down is, look, there's some great defensive lines in college football, but it's still not the same. And the other thing is you can really control a game. You can control a game in college football with a great running back. You can control your pace, you can control the game as a play caller. And I just, I totally agree with you. I mean and you look at the guys and you look at a lot of these guys who are really good running backs in the college level. They may be the most under ranked, undervalued position in recruiting. To your point.

Yeah.

Jerry Hamilton
The recruiting rankings are trying to be based on NFL projection and their NFL does not draft running backs unless you're a freak like Jeremiah Love. Anybody thinks he didn't want the difference maker, right? He was a great player. But they're going to limit those guys in the rankings because the NFL draft limits those guys in the first round and kind of the value of them. But that doesn't mean that ranking is correct to college football. I mean it just go down the list of your top rushers in college football last year and none of those guys outside of Love were ranked very highly. But all those guys had massive impacts. I mean Mark Fletcher Jr. For Miami, that guy was an, he was a difference maker for that team. These guys change the way people defend you because if it, if you college, if a college defensive coordinator can't make a team one dimensional in college, they're in a tough spot. So if you have a running back and you cannot be made run onedimensional and you can control the game through your run game, you're a very difficult team to beat.

I just, my, my point is knowing how they work recruiting rankings because I used to be over the top of them. You would choose players and say, okay, there are going to be at max two running backs or even one running back. It's going to be a first round draft pick. That's how the NFL has kind of done it the last decade or two decades even. Okay, so you basically only give one five star to a running back.

Yeah.

The problem is these recruiting rankings don't take into account the value of a player in college football. Right. I mean, I'll just say, for example, one of the best college football players of all time in my opinion is Tommy Frazier, the Nebraska quarterback back in the 90s for. I'm sorry to reach back that far for folks, but he was a five star in every sense of the word at Nebraska as a quarterback. But he was an option quarterback. Okay. He didn't even get drafted.

Right.

But that Nebraska team, in my opinion, doesn't win back to back titles without Tommy Frazier at quarterback. They were great and they won some games without him actually when he was injured. But that's the difference that I. That's where I think recruiting rankings miss the boat because they've gone completely into this idea of being about pro football because they want to. They want to toot their own Horn in four years when they say I had 12 first round draft picks instead of, well, I had the, you know, Outland Award winner.

We have fullbacks on our show quite a bit. So Will Matthews, he's on. Marcus Meers has been on with us. What's it like? Do you end up with a shaved head out of all this? Because Marcus has a shaved head too. Is that, is that kind of the only Will stare?

I don't know. I think when you hit your head enough times, stuff starts to happen, you know, I'm just kind of going with the flow at this point, but. And it saves money on haircuts, so.

So tell us what you're. Hey. Hey, Alex. If you don't mind, when we visit with former players, we like to tell folks where you're, what you're up to these days and how things are going. What are you up to these days?

Alex De La Torre
Well, me and my family have been living, we live in the Rockwall area, but I've been coaching at Wiley east now for five years. I'm the defensive coordinator there. Started off coaching special teams, coaching linebackers as well. But we've loved it out here. We found a great community and yeah, just literally just focusing on the kids and football. It's been really fun.

Jerry Hamilton
Hey, Alex, I wanted to, when we get, we got past players on, we always ask about. I kind of go back to your, your recruitment. You came into the 20. 20, 2012 recruiting class for Texas, highly ranked class. So I always like to ask, going back to your recruiting, now that you're a coach, right? And you coach guys who are being recruited, kinda how have things in your eyes really changed throughout this process and if, if any kids. And it's. I know it's different now, really talented kid as an agent and everything around them. But what would be your advice to guys going through this process now? Because we have a lot of parents that have kids coming up that listen to the show.

Alex De La Torre
Yeah, no, I mean I, I definitely have seen a difference just, you know, physicality wise. Like I think, you know, the players that Texas is recruiting are a little different than what I was, you know, but I don't think I would have been good enough this time around, go around, you know, to possibly be a Texas. I mean, I think that's a conversation up for debate. But in My opinion, I think that's the case and what you're seeing in the high school is, you know, kids that, that would have been getting offers as sophomores are now having to wait till senior year to get noticed. And you know, you have the size, you have the, the ability and, and you make plays and it's like what's, what's missing, you know, and it's the portal. It's so many different other factors as well, but that's just one of many different changes I've noticed. But my advice would be, you know, blue chip recruits are going to have agents because they got many different people going at them. But the reality is most kids do know the process. They don't really understand what that is, which can, can possibly lead parents and families and put them in a bad situation messing with, you know, people that are, that don't have their best interests at heart. So I would just say talk to the coaches, not necessarily the high school coaches. I would always encourage that. Talk with your, you know, head coach and personal coach and recruiting coordinator, but talk to the, to the college coaches and you know, if they're recruiting your kid, they'd be willing to have these conversations and start there, you know, but agents and stuff. I, I, I've not seen a kid in high school, at least where I'm at with an agent, so not sure, not sure about that area yet.

Bobby Burton
Alex, let me ask you this. As you've become and grown up into being a coach and become an adult, etc, your view on recruiting now as a coach as opposed to a former player, in your view of it when you were quite a bit younger, has that, has your feelings on it evolved? What are your, what are your thoughts

Alex De La Torre
in terms of like, feelings in terms of what again?

Bobby Burton
Yeah, have you, have you learned anything? Like if you, if you could tell your younger self something, what would you say? Or. Yeah, yo, do you need to like cut through all the BS and just focus on what matters to you? That sort of stuff? Because coaches as adults, we try to think that, oh, we can just do away with all this other superfluous stuff, but as a young kid, sometimes that's really, the extra stuff is what's fun. You know what I mean?

Alex De La Torre
For sure. You know, it's, it's when you're one one Ponytown and it's, you know, in Austin, that's how I called it because, you know, there's no professional team. It's, you're kind of the guys and you feel a certain way about yourself and you know, I think, I think a lot of us had a certain mentality about that and it could go a certain way depending on how humble you were. And so, you know, for me, I would say humble yourself, you know, or God's going to do it for you. And so it's a little bit of both. And, but just humble yourself first and then, you know, the Lord's gonna uplift you in all your endeavors. And I think just focus on the Lord. Like that's, for me personally, that would be what I tell myself because it's taken a long time to get to this point.

Jerry Hamilton
Hey, Alex, you came into Texas in a class with Malcolm Brown from Brenham and Hassan Ridgeway, two tremendous defensive linemen. I, I, I told the story yesterday at the end of Coffee and Football that I went to Brenham High when Glenn west was the head coach there and they have what was called the county fair. I know you're familiar with it all.

Bobby Burton
Yeah.

Jerry Hamilton
And I watched and I got there at the tail end of Malcolm Brown running like a 6:30 mile at 295 pounds. For those that, for Texas fans here that didn't get the up close look like you did on a daily basis, Malcolm Brown and Hassan Ridgeway, kind of from your viewpoint, in your words, about those guys as players, prospects and what you saw from those guys from when they got there to when they left.

Alex De La Torre
Yeah, no, they were, they were big time. I mean, we knew Malcolm was the real deal that first summer and I'm sure some of y' all reported about it. There was a scuffle, but, you know, he, he won pretty significantly. And I remember just chatting with my pop about it. I was like, dog, this dude, this dude's legit. He's just a monster. And then, you know, Hassan, man, Hassan is just such a great dude, such a great friend. Malcolm too. But Hassan was just funny because that first summer, you know, we get these meal cards and, and I know a lot of the 2012 class can attest to this. That dude burned through it in like a week and a half. I feel like there was like, hey, Hassan's out of, he's out of card money. And that was that summer. He went from like, you know, 260 to close to 300 pounds. But man, he just, it was, it looked effortless for him and he, they just were super talented. I just feel fortunate to have been there and rub shoulders and just worked with those guys and you know, you look up and then they're, they're still playing in the league or I think they're, you know, Malcolm's maybe, I think, coaching now, and, you know, I haven't seen what Hasan's up to. I hope he's still playing, but still, it's still cool to see just guys playing. And my kids in class don't believe me. It's. It's the mo. It's hilarious. It's hilarious. But they have a hard time believing me. They're like, I don't know, but.

Bobby Burton
Alex, we were just talking earlier about the importance of running backs in college compared to that of the pro game. We're doing a list of the top players of the modern era for the University of Texas, and there's five guys on that list, five running backs of 25 players. If you pick the top 25 players in the Dallas Cowboys the last 25 years, there wouldn't be five running backs. Is. Is the position of running back in college more valuable than that in the pro game, or is the program just more even because they're all so good? And. And a good running back in college is worth more because the. Of the talent disparity or the. The ability? What. What are your thoughts on that? Jerry and I were kind of discussing that before you came on.

Yeah, I mean, I. I'm not too sure about. I'm sorry. Want to say that one more time. What was it?

The running back game.

That's right. No, so I think it's. I think it's schematic. So for me, like, I love running the ball. If I was an offensive coach, I would have to have that. I don't think it's necessarily going away. You. You know, there's a lot of good things in having a running back. In terms of the value, though, I don't know. I don't know the valuations and what that looks like, but for me, I know the value of showing ball down and having a running back. You know, if you're wanting to throw the ball and get the linebackers out the picture, that's. That's a good way to do it because we got to respect the run, you know, but there's the value for. For the player and the positions there. But in terms of, like, how much, I don't know if the NFL. I think the wear and tear is also a factor just in terms of how much they're banging each play with the pads. And so I. I'm not too sure, to be honest, but those are my thoughts on it.

I. I think, Bobby, I think the first time I ever went to Denton. Orion was when Jarvis Moss was coming through. Yeah, way back in 03. I was a youngster in the business, but I went to see Jarvis Moss, went to Florida hellasia talent. But growing up around that program, I mean, I remember. It's weird, Alex. I remember watching Mario Edwards Jr. Do a back flip flip with a 80 pound and like. And you came through there. I mean, obviously Derek Loki came through there, played at Texas. Jatavion Sanders, Anthony Hill. But just what it means to you to be part of that Denton Ryan family because y' all have had some great players come through also some really good guys on those teams.

Yeah, no, and there's one more person a lot of old guys will remember. Ishi Odo was the same.

Jerry Hamilton
Oh yeah.

Ishi was a dog as well as all of those guys. You know, Derek. Derek is, is one of what I like to see as my. A mentor of mine that I've known for a very long time. And no, to be a part of that, that fraternity has been really cool. You know, I got to be able to be around Jatavian Anthony and Austin Jordan. You know, Austin was my first. I remember hitting up Justin Wells about Austin in seventh grade. And I'll about talk. I'm like, you better get out here and look at him, dude. And you know, lo and behold, he's finished his career at TCU and he's got a chance to, you know, play in the NFL. And so, man, I just, it's really cool. And it, the further away I get from it, the, the more unrealistic. It doesn't feel real sometimes. You know, I like that aspect because again, it keeps you humble and it makes you really appreciate the times that you were there. For sure.

I gotta ask you this, coach, anybody y' all play or have played in the last couple of years that you said, wow, that guy's gonna be a stud,

Alex De La Torre
man. I, I know Richardson High School just. We've had them game one and, and we've been seeing them the past couple years playing Lakeview Centennial team in our district and they had a big D tackle going to Jamie on Wednesday or USC at one point. Yeah, he, he. Man, when he could go, when his burst, when he was, you know, at full speed 100%, he was, he was pretty, pretty game changing. And I hadn't seen that since probably, probably Ed Oliver's high school tape. I remember seeing his high school tape. He was a pretty, he was pretty monstrous.

Very similar, very similar comparison.

Very similar Athletes. That's a great call. I didn't put that one together in my head. I, I love that actually, having seen both those guys. Jamie on it is, I thought that guy was a legitimate five star. When we saw, when I saw him, he was a total freak athlete. I want to ask you this. Watching Texas, okay? Will Muschamp comes back as D.C. obviously you're familiar with Coach Muschamp. What kind of difference do you think that's going to make? Not to take away from what PK did, but kind of where Sark's going with the defense in the sec. What. What kind of impact do you think must Champ could make on this team?

Alex De La Torre
It's. It's a mentality. I think it's all mentality. You know, the scheme's going to be good. You know, he's experienced, but in terms of how you approach the game and the, you know, Coach Muschamp is going to be very serious about that. Y' all have seen it. I've heard the players talking about just the, the amount of focus and urgency it's going to take to be a great defense and to win a national championship, you're going to have to do things a little different. You got to think different. And, you know, I think that mental edge is going to be something that you're going to see on the sideline. You're going to see it on the field, in my opinion.

Have you taken anything away or who. I know you have. Who have you taken the most away from? That maybe you played under played for, that you've taken to your own coaching career?

Alex De La Torre
That. It's funny that, you know, Tommy Robinson's the name that comes to mind. And Jeff Traylor, I'm pretty sure they're both working together at UTSA right now, so we need to pay them a visit here soon. But no, those two guys my last two years with with Coach Strong, those two coaches really did a great job. You know, Coach Applewhite is my guy. Like, I love all my personal coaches, positional coaches we had, man. But in terms of me learning the. The extension of knowledge outside of just who to block. But what's the. The past scheme behind that? What. What are all the different run schemes? Who. Where. Who's identifying the mic that changes who I got, you know, all the different things, you know, really put it together for me in a way and challenged me, really, really challenged me. And that's what I needed. You know, my dad was like that. I needed a challenge. I needed someone to really push me and Challenge me in that way. And those guys all did a really amazing job.

that's just in the high school ranks, right? I mean, it's like. Yeah, that. I mean, it was. It was crazy. I'll tell you one of the. The crazy things, and it's crazy. I mean, just when you miss. I thought it was just crazy. It was. So I was at Cedric Baxter's spring game, that would have been junior year, and they played Kissimmee Osceola, and yes, a slender Bomasco was on that field, and Rod Wright was there as the D line coach for Miami. And, And I, I looked across the way and I was like, man, that guy. Physically, he's lost so much weight, but that's got to be him. And I knew he was on the Miami staff, and I walked over to him and kind of talked about the Hastings days. And it's just, it's. It's always interesting when you're just on the road and you see somebody that. That is coaching, whether it's high school or college, that played at Texas or that you covered and now. And you see him, that was at Osceola High in, In Kissimmee, Florida. Just. It was just crazy to run into him there, but obviously he was there. Yeah, they were recruiting a number. Ola had a number of defensive linemen, DBs. Edgewater had Cedric Baxter and a couple other guys.

Yeah, it's, it's, it's quite a. There's always a football game going on somewhere when we all get together and, you know, it's hard to pick out one of them that's going to be special. But, But Jackson's little boy, Steiner, is. Well, his older son Stone is. Is going to be a great athlete, but Steiner is, you know, I think I've told y' all before, he's been missing his two front teeth for about three years. Knocked him out playing football. And he's. I think he's not to the age where his teeth are supposed to come out yet, so his other teeth have not grown back in. He's got that change of direction. I mean, he can hit top speed in about three or four steps like Jordan could. And I think he might be a db, though, because he loves contact. I mean, his older brother does not like when. Because he's going down. He will bring him down every time.

Hey, here's the other piece of that is you can hear. You can still hear the coach in your voice. You're, like, evaluating talent at age 7.

Well, it's easy to do because, well, Jackson video stuff and sends it to me. And he works with him every single day. He works with him on football, you know, and people don't realize sometimes, you know, when, when. When they get in junior high, you know. Well, I think my son. I think I wanted to be a receiver. Well, yeah, he can be a receiver, but he probably not going to be a great receiver because you can't teach somebody, you know, how to catch the ball and have soft hands, like, once, you know, they're a teenager. I mean, you can, but it's much more difficult, you know, at that stage of the game for a guy to have naturally soft hands and not think about watching the ball all the way in. You know, it just comes as a second nature because they've been doing it so long.

Coach, we were talking with Alex De La Torre just a few minutes ago. I know you heard a little bit of that. We talked with him about this being the last week without football. Starting next week, we got football. Yes, it's only practice, but it's football. As a former coach, what are the final pieces of the puzzle that you're trying to put together before you get going this during the. During a fall camp or a fall practice?

Well, first of all, as you guys were talking about personally, the thing that got me going, you talking about that band, is those drums, you know, when you're, when you're out getting things ready, you know, just final touches on the field and equipment and all that stuff, you know, of course, you know, when you're a high school coach, you're probably out painting the field, you know, doing all that stuff. But to hear those drums, that's what always gets my blood going. I'm like, yeah, baby, it's here, you

But I think it's just obviously a lot of excitement, a lot of anticipation, you know, just. Just making sure you have a good plan, practice plan. You. You want to. Obviously, the. The guys are in probably the best shape they're going to be in right now, you know, because there hasn't been any hitting or anything in the spring staff and working them out all summer. And so I. I think just making sure you get that practice back to schedule just right where you optimize your time that you have with them and

to a certain limit. But you have to realize you got to be in it for the long run, you know, and what kind of. What kind of. What do I do to get the most out of my players and yet still have them healthy, you know, to be playing football in January? You know, that's. That's the key. Also, obviously, there's going to be some freak injuries that happen, and they happen every year, ACLs and, you know, things like that. But I think our spring staff does a great job of getting those guys in shape and getting them ready for football. So I think as a coaching staff, you just. It's already been done.

It's not like this week they're putting together their practice schedule. You know, what they're going to do, but they've already. They've already published all that. Every. I mean, every coach and probably player already has a schedule for two days now. You. You always leave room to tweak that schedule. As you see things progress through fall camp, you know, hey, we gotta, you know, push them a little more. Let's back off a little more. Let's give them this, you know, let's give them. Let's. Let's go out and cut practice by 30 minutes, you know, on this day or whatever. But I think. I think they've probably already tweaked the depth chart where they're gonna start targeting people that we need to make sure that we're getting this guy reps. Oh, this guy's just a true freshman. We got to make sure he's getting reps. And I think it's just the exciting optimism about these new guys coming in, because there's a lot of new talent on the 40 acres right now. And I think, you know, Trying to get a plan together to see what you've got, see how quickly they're picking up the schemes and things like that. And then you adjust their reps as practice goes on and they prove that they're worthy and they, they've got the scheme down, the basic scheme down. And so then as you get into fall practice, you just, you know, obviously you just start with the basics, you know, just make sure we have a good foundation of what we're going to do, a good foundation of understanding the philosophy behind each play and offensively and defensively and, you know, and just give them a little more reins, give them a little more reins, give them a little more range as practice goes on. See who can handle it, you know, and the ones that can't are unfortunately going to fall down on the depth chart. Because this is that opportunity that we always talk about. Rod always talks about it, that circle of trust, you know, with the coaches. And this is the opportunity that every kid has, a coach, clean slate to come in and try to get in that circle of trust to get those reps, to prove yourself. And, you know, competition is the greatest motivator, you know, of all. We've got an incredibly talented roster this year. And so, you know, there's, there's no taking plays off and no taking drills off or anything like that. There's too much talent on this team. You can lose your spot really easily. And so I think it's just going to be a great week, week next week of evaluation and see where those guys are at. But, you know, make sure your veterans are where you think they are and where they're supposed to be, but also the excitement of watching these new guys on campus and how they, how they, you know, you've been working out in pods and in groups and now everything comes together as well as blending all that in with your culture and make sure those guys are unselfish players and not going to have hiccups with attitudes and, you know, pouting because I'm not, you know, I was the star. I was a five star guy. He told me this, that I'm not getting any reps or whatever. You know, there's just little things like that guys are going to have to grow a lot in these next few weeks. These new guys are going to have to grow because they've always been the big dog, you know, and now you're on a roster that's packed with NFL potential and see how those guys respond to that. And I think they do a great job in recruiting and Evaluating those guys, not only physically, but, you know, with their heart, with their attitude. You know, I say this all the time. I've always said it. You can give them the best of everything. The best equipment, the best games, the best coaches, the best everything. But you. What you can't give them is hard. And. And that's one of. That's one of the things that during fall camp, that's what comes out. You know, what's in a guy's heart, what's his real mental psyche, like, you know, what's his attitude going to be with adversity and all that stuff. So I think there's. There's a broad range of things, you know, that the staff is going to be evaluating and looking at. But I would say other than just schemes, it's just going to be a great week. And coaches are going to spend a lot of time in meeting and evaluating what they've got and how they're going to start fitting the pieces of the puzzle together. They've already put the puzzle together for the most part, but obviously there's going to be some adjustments and some tweaks and some things like that. And it's always. It's always fun when all the coaches kind of look at each other when they see a true freshman make a play and they're like, whoa, yeah, he's exactly what we thought he was.

You know, hey, coach, I want to ask you this. Not all players are necessarily great practice players. Like, no guys are all the same. Nobody's built the same. In your experience as a head coach, obviously you probably had a guy that wasn't a best practice player, but on Friday night, he was a dude and you knew you could count on him. And when you were at Texas, take people inside those discussions because obviously you say, okay, we want everybody to be practice like a starter, practice like a champion. But the reality is not every guy is going to be a great practice player. But you know what? When the lights come on, they are. How do you all deal with that? What is. What were those discussions like as you try to get your messaging out? But maybe one guy's not a great practice player and he may be one of the best players on the team come Saturday.

Yeah, I think. I think there's fewer and fewer of those situations than there used to be because there's so much competition. And I think a coach is spending time one on one with. With a young man and saying, look, you know, the old adage is you practice like you play, you know, but there's so much talent now out there, especially, you know, with, with the Portal and all those things that, that you have to be a great practice player. I mean, there's not, there's, there's. I mean, it's hard for me to imagine a guy who's going to be a great gamer, but he's not a good practice player. I didn't have, I did not have patience with people like that on my football teams. And I think this staff, especially defensively, you know, the intensity is going to, is going to be incredible. And I just have a hard time seeing a guy that's not a great practice player, but a great game performer

you know, I just don't see that much anymore. And honestly, when I was a Tech Texas, I don't. I think I was there five years. I, I didn't see a lot of that. I saw a little bit of it because I was there during some lean years as well, you know, and, and there, there were a couple of guys that, you know, that, that you question and you see coaches pull them over to the side and trying to get them, you know, to, to, to be a better teammate. But I think, I think there's so much talent in this roster. I don't think there's, there's room for, for guys, you know, to not be a great practice player because there's. In schemes today are so much different than they were, you know, even, even 10 years ago. You know, there's just, you just have to have total focus and attention the entire time. And I just can't see this staff allowing a guy to go who would drill or go through anything in practice. 80%, you know, or 70%. It's just, it's just, it's just. I don't think it's going to happen. I don't.

You mentioned something earlier about when you see a freshman do something you like, your jaw kind of drops or say, oh, that's different. Right? I, I've been on a practice field when that's happened. Jermaine Bishop is the guy I want to bring up to you. And Jerry and I were talking about him yesterday because he's, he's a special guy, I think, but he's smaller. Right. And so Jerry and I were talking about, well, do you, do you kind of get him a taste in the first five or six games and ready for college football and then kind of go to him more as the season wears on, or do you just give him the Kelvin Banks treatment and throw him in there day one? Is there anything different that you would look to do for a guy like that or do you just kind of let them see where they're at? I mean, what's the thought process?

Yeah, well, I think you see, see where they're at, you know, see how well he's going to pick up things. But you've got to get him and you've got to get him in big moments, you know, just to see what he can do. And, and I, I think that's, that's the thing that.

So by big moments, coach, by big moments, do you mean like during a, a running with the ones versus the ones, or during a scrimmage.

Okay, you, I just think you feed him as much as, as much as he can, as much as he can take. You know, just, you got to test him and see how he's going to transition to this level of football against this, you know, this roster. And I think you get him against the ones as much as you can. Even, even, even if he's running with the twos, you know, going against the ones, get him in moments where he's going to have to rise to the occasion. Let's see what we've got. I mean, you know, back in the day, I grew up in a great time for muscle cars and things like that, you know, and I, I, I had a 1968 Chevy short wide pickup that used to have a six cylinder in, and we put a 327 in it. And what did I do? I took it out and see what it could do. Let's see what it can do. You don't do it all the time, you, but let's take it out and see what it can do. And that's what I see with Jermaine. You know, let's find a way where we can put the pedal to the metal and see what he can do, see what he's got in his tank, see how he's gonna transition into college football against this elite roster.

That from a source earlier this week, what did you like about Emmett Mosley last year as a wide receiver? What you saw, and there's a thought that he could actually be in where he's at now, healthy. He could be a number one for a lot of power Four teams.

I mean, you know that. That's going to. I mean, this season is setting up perfectly in my mind for Emmett Moseley to have a great year. I like his competitiveness. I mean, he does not back down. You know, he's, he's. He's, for the most part, has been consistent. And, you know, I just think he's. He's smart. And I just see him being that almost a Quan Cosby type guy. Like, you know, Quan wasn't the tallest guy, was dang fast, but wasn't the fastest guy. But he always found he was always there when you needed him. And that's kind of how I see Emmett Mosley especially. I'm so fired up about him for the season because, you know, if we can get a tight end, if we can get our tight end involved, and I think that the tight end is another position that is going to be a great opportunity for one or two guys to have great seasons. Because if Emmett Mosley's doing what we expect him to do along with the outside guys, we already know what those guys can do. What are you going to do? How are you going to handle another tight end throwing in that mix, too? As well as we all know the way that Sark likes to throw to the backside of the backfield, it's going to be difficult. And I'm really excited about. About Emmitt, and I think he's. I think he's going to have a great season. I think he's. I think he's got all the attributes that you need for that position position, and I think he fits really well in this offense.

But Matier couldn't reach the end zone. Even with our secondary struggling, I can't see OU's defense stopping Arch Slark for four quarters. Hook them, hook them back.

I, I, I think that people are misunderstanding what I'm saying. Like I've picked Texas to beat Oklahoma this year. That doesn't mean I don't think Oklahoma is a good team. I think Texas and potentially even a great team, I think Texas has the potential to be a great team. And so Matier, I, I think that they were so singularly focused on him last year. I mean he was their offense, period. That and big plays to Isaiah Satania, the big play receiver, that was it. And so if they get a running game, it's a big if. But they do have the majority of their offensive lineback and they're a year older, some young to they started two freshmen, two true freshmen last year. Those guys are going to be stronger and better this year. If he doesn't turn the ball over as much. I, I, I think that there will be less of a focus just on the quarterback in OU's offense and that should help them score more points against everybody, not just Texas. That being said, I am a big believer in their defense. Very big believer in it. I think they've got as good a defense as anybody in the in the country. Now we could talk about and they're as well coached as anybody in the country. I'll add that Brent Venables does a good job on defense.

Yeah, I believe the whole key to Oklahoma season is running the football. They were 119.8 yards a game last year. I don't know where that ranks in the history of Oklahoma football, but it's got to be amongst the lowest. And I know it's different when they ran option back in days, but let's say since Bob Stoops became the head coach it's got to be one of the lowest rushing yard averages per game they've ever had in that era, if not the lowest in any time. I think you have a quarterback that contend to or has a history of trying to play a little hero ball become going past gunslinger mentality. The run game is so key to have because if you can the more you can keep Mater out of those situations where he goes to that level of what we call hero ball here. He feels like he has to. I think that's a big need for this Oklahoma team this year is to be able to run the football behind him and around him. To try to keep him out of those situations as much as possible. And it goes to Bobby's turning the football over. How do you help him as a team, as a staff, keep him out of those scenarios where you know his weaknesses as a player. The way you do that is running the football behind him and around better. I think that's going to be the whole key to Oklahoma season. They're going to be good on defense, they're going to be good in a lot of spots. But if they can't and that's the first thing Brent Venables brought up, kind of like Sark brought up penalties at SEC media is the first thing Brent Venables brought up. We got to run the football better and he had a goal of 175 yards a game this year. If they come close to that, they're going to be a tough out if they're in the 130 range. Changes the way they become a one dimensional team too often.

Look, I, I think they're an interesting team this year as Matt Campbell brought over a lot of his experienced players and puts them with what was left over on a very talented roster. And if there's one thing we know about James Franklin, he had talented players throughout his roster. They, they had talent in a lot of positions. A lot of NFL draft picks came through there. A lot of really good football players were on that roster and even though Franklin left, all of those guys didn't leave. So I think Bobby with Rocco Beck at quarterback, familiar system, familiarity with your head coach. They brought in all the best players from Iowa State that they could. Some really good players, probably three or four or five guys that'll be drafted players, they have a schedule to make a little noise Year one I I don't think there's any doubt about it. And the crazy thing about that, bringing up Penn State, I think James Franklin has a roster to make no noise in the ACC in year one. But Penn State has that schedule, Bobby, and they got enough guys with familiarity that came over with Matt Campbell on this schedule to make a little noise.

So you're not wrong. The only game that they'll be, I think significantly underdogs or significant underdogs is usc. I mean, they're, they, they will be underdogs to that. But I would, I would add this, that, that Maryland game. If they get by Maryland in game four, then they go to Michigan. Maryland has a really good young quarterback.

He's going to be a sophomore. And you know, Mike Loxley can call an offense now. Now, he may not be able to stop anybody at Maryland. That's been their issue for, since he's been there. But I would say they get past that. Minnesota would be. Is going to be a tough out for, for Penn State. You know, frankly, even if a lot of those guys that were at Penn State left to go with James Franklin or elsewhere. So I'm, I'm, I'm not. I don't see Penn State really making a mark. I just don't. But they have the schedule to do, so. Yeah, maybe fool's gold if they do it. That's all I would say.

I. I think we've talked about him a little earlier. We might be time to bring up the wide receiver depth chart. I think Emmett Mosley has a lot of those characteristics. I think Emmett Mosley is the most physical blocker at wide receiver on this team. I think. I think he's a strong player. Okay. I mean he's listed 6 2, 200 but he's a strong £200. I think Emmett Mosley has a lot of that in him. And this isn't a knock on Whittington who's in the NFL. He fought a lot of injuries. I think Mosley is a higher upside wide receiver as well. But I think Mosley brings a lot of those qualities. But I. I think Bobby, that's a great question. Who is going to make the Silas Bolden play? Who's gonna make the J. Whit play this year for Texas? Who's that player going to be? Because it's one thing to have all the talent, but who is going to. There's going to be a point in time or two this season where it's a loose ball hustle play. It's chasing down somebody who's about to go 75 and you save the touchdown and that drive ends up with a field goal. Who are those guys that are going to make those plays for Texas? That I think is to be determined. The talent is amazing, but the playmaking that is you don't talk about all off season is going to be huge for this team.

Maybe it's Dalen McCutcheon. You know, we've kind of eschewed him out of this lineup because we've been talking about Coleman Wingo, Mosley and then they brought in Burkhalter. The, the arrival of Jermaine Bishop. Kali Glockett's expected healthy for this camp. We've kind of not talked about Dale McCutcheon. Maybe it's Dalen McCutcheon. He seems to find his way on the field no matter what else is going on with everybody else. So maybe that's it.

Yeah, I like that you brought up a Bishop. Bishops lives around a football. Like if there's a ball rolling on the field, he's probably a guy that finds his way to that ball. But I, I thought, I thought what was interesting, what I posted this morning, Rocky poor. Why did Chris Stewart only play five games? He had a shoulder injury that required surgery. I believe his father's on this chat from time to time. He could update us, but Chris Stewart's had a really good summer. By the way, I posted that this morning. Second, third time we've heard that he is doing all the right things to kind of lay out, earn the trust of the coaches and say this guy could be a really good player in time at Texas. Chris Stewart's done doing all the right things. He's doing really well in the off season program. One thing about Chris Stewart as a wide receiver, the one thing I noticed the first time I ever went to Shadow Creek and watched him, he runs through the ball a lot of times. Wide receivers, that's kind of something they have to teach those guys. Run through the football, run through the route, run through the ball. He does that. That really impressed me. First time I saw him, he was a junior in high school, a young age. He was running through the ball every single rep I saw him take that day. So he's, he's getting the college in a good place in from that regard. But Bobby, how I think the big question, somebody asked this question in the chat. I can't remember who it was. Will Sark expand the circle of trust at wide receiver this year? 1, 2 on this schedule, how much can you if your top. If your front three guys, if you're starting guys are Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley. Can you expand the circle trust because this is a tremendously deep room and how much can you in games. It's tough question going into the season for Sark, definitely because he has three. I mean you're starting three guys who are going to be NFL draft picks and you're starting one guy that's a for sure first rounder. And Ryan Wingo could ha. Could if he has a big junior year, he could become one of those guys to go late first round. And then if Emmett Mosley has a healthy year the way they're talking about him, he's going to rise on NFL draft boards throughout the season. So one can start expand the circle of trust. He has the talent to do so and experience to do so. Then the second part of that is how much can those guys actually get on the field in this schedule this year? You don't have the gimme. You don't have that UTEP and Sam Houston and San Jose State games. This team would truck those teams. But Texas State and UTSA is more competition.
