I'm Jeff Duden, and today we're talking about the power of discernment, specifically how to apply it in an economy that keeps shifting under our feet. In this episode, I'm going to pull a story from my book that really hits home in moments like these. It's about inflection points, these moments when a single decision can alter your trajectory completely. I'll share how I navigated my own, break down what I learned, and show you how to use discernment to make smarter moves, even when the numbers don't give you the whole picture. In Discernment, I recount a pivotal moment early in my career when I found myself standing in the wreckage left by Hurricane Andrew, deciding whether or not to stay and help with the cleanup. That decision ultimately became the foundation for Advantaclean, a company that I grew to hundreds of locations and national impact. What's interesting about that moment wasn't that I knew what I was doing, because I didn't, but that I moved toward uncertainty. Every inflection point carries the same tension, the opportunity to grow and the risk of loss. Specifically, in today's economy, entrepreneurs who recognize these moments and make intentional, well informed decisions will come out on top. Here's how I've broken down major decisions over the years. Most big Decisions revolve around these three things. Number one, people. Who will this decision impact? Your employees? Your customers? Your family? People you care about? People you want to do something with or maybe even get away from? Opportunity or a great gain? What's the upside? Could this pivot unlock new doors and new future for you? And a risk of loss? You have to give something up to get something better. What's it going to be? Franchising is a perfect example. A lot of business owners face this question. Should I invest my time, talent, energy and money into a franchise? On the surface, it's a great opportunity. Scaling a business, creating wealth and growing a brand. But to make that leap, you often have to let go of some control. It's a trade off, and not everyone is prepared to make it. That's where discernment comes in. It's not just about crunching numbers. It's about seeing beyond them. Visualize the future you want. Weigh the possibilities and ask yourself which path makes that future more probable. Like I say, business athletes read the scenarios, not the rules. How this applies to today's economy? Well, right now we're living through an inflection point. Interest rates are high, capital is hard to get, and market conditions are shifting fast. Business owners everywhere are facing tough choices. Do they expand, hold steady, or do something else? If you're grappling with this, ask yourself, does this opportunity align with my long term vision or is it just a distraction? Who will this decision affect? How will it impact them? And what risks am I willing to take? And what is the reward that is worth it? These questions aren't about finding guarantees. They're about developing a disciplined mindset. One where you train yourself to see the bigger picture even when the future feels uncertain, and to align yourself with the most probable outcome that fits you and your needs. Here's my challenge. Carve out 15 minutes today to reflect on a decision you're currently facing. Maybe it's hiring somebody new, taking on a client or launching a product. Map those opportunities out, the risks and the people involved. Then visualize the most likely scenarios that could play out. The more often you do this, the better you'll get at making high quality decisions. And looking at the downside scenarios will keep you from making a bad one. There are no absolutes, only probabilities. Your goal isn't to be perfect. It's to keep improving your batting average of good decisions over time. And in today's economy, that edge could be the difference between surviving and thriving. That's what discernment looks like in action, the ability to see the whole picture, weigh your options, and make the best moves for you in uncertain times.
