Brian Lucci
When you're a shy heart, you can't help but fall in love with the couples on our show like Stella and Sean, AKA Stella Ride, or Burgess and Ruzik, AKA Berzyk, or even Hannah and Dean Archer. But I'm not touching that with a 10 foot stethoscope. Cause they're just friends. But my favorite part of One Chicago is how we show the love the characters have for each other as friends and colleagues. The kind of friendship you take a bullet for or walk through a fire for, literally. And I think one of the best examples of a dynamic duel are Ambo61's paramed violin Mikami and Lizzie Novak.
Joslyn Houdon
Paging Dr. Hottie. Okay, that guy could take your mind off Carver.
Hanako Greensmith
My mind is not on Carver. Anyway, doctors really are my thing.
Brian Lucci
Today we're getting into it with the actors who bring these two characters to life. Chicago Fire's wonderful, talented Hanako Greensmith and Joslyn Houdon.
Joslyn Houdon
It was also like a moment in the show where our characters, Violet was like, get out of here. And then Novak's like, nah, if you're going down, I'm going down with you. So I think that's where like our bond really like solidified.
Brian Lucci
So stick around. Cause after the break, you're gonna hear about who they are off camera. Their favorite moments on Chicago Fire and their undeniable chemistry that you just can't get enough of. Don't go anywhere.

Brian Lucci
Foreign hi, I'm Brian Lucci and this is the one Chicago podcast today. I'm lucky enough to be with two lovely ladies from Chicago Fire. Hanukkah, Greensmith.
Hanako Greensmith
You got it.
Brian Lucci
You know what? I'm gonna say this right? Joslyn Houdon. Yeah, yeah, yeah. These are tough names for me all the time.
Joslyn Houdon
I know.
Brian Lucci
Yeah. First of all, thanks so much for coming in. I can't thank you enough. I know that our worlds collide all the time and I don't get to see you guys work too much, but when we do have crossovers, it's fun as heck. All I know is when I told people I'm going to have the chance to come see you, like everyone's Grooving on you too. There's this amazing chemistry that's undeniable, that has been growing for how long?
Joslyn Houdon
I round up to three years.
Brian Lucci
Three years. And you're.
Hanako Greensmith
I do believe it's about a year and a half.
Joslyn Houdon
Two years. It's like three seasons. It is three seasons. 12, 13. Part of 14.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, but when did you start jiving? Like, like, like Starskin Hutch type? Like, when you guys knew that you guys were like, okay, this is amazing. Like, this is because people love you together, right?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I'm serious. Like, they're looking forward to you. You know what I mean? Like, yeah, like, you have the Rusic and you got the Burges and we have our thing and. And then on fire you do one.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
So usually we get into this whole intro, but I think that people want to hear so much from you guys and where you from and how you came here that we're going to jump right into the fire. Cool with you.
Hanako Greensmith
I see what you did there.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, you see what I did. Let's start out at the very beginning. Can you both tell me how you joined the show? And let's start out with the paramedic in charge.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. Oh, my God.
Brian Lucci
I gave it back.
Hanako Greensmith
I came as a guest star back in 2019 and I was playing a girlfriend to a character called Gallo. Really? In the interest of preventing any medical complications from spinal injury, any patients who, an indication of neck trauma required the administration of a cervical collar before transportation.
Brian Lucci
You memorize that?
Hanako Greensmith
You did. And they brought me back a couple more times and then kind of one thing led to another. And then I came on full time season 10.
Brian Lucci
But you were a paramedic in another house.
Hanako Greensmith
I was a paramedic at another house, yeah. So I would just kind of like bop in and out every other, you know, every now and again.
Brian Lucci
But they must have loved you or did they screw you?
Hanako Greensmith
I don't know, but I'm here. No, they love you. There's no way.
Brian Lucci
We get guest stars all the time. And if they don't, you don't pop, you don't pop. You know what I mean?
Hanako Greensmith
Everybody says that. Yeah.
Brian Lucci
They figure out a way in the wolf world where we're like, okay, we like her, let's steal her.
Hanako Greensmith
I was very lucky to have popped or to have been liked. And so now here we are in season 14.
Brian Lucci
How did it happen with you?
Hanako Greensmith
I auditioned. We did a chemistry read.
Joslyn Houdon
Yes. Like your previous question. When did we have the chemistry? I think it was the network test. I remember reading the audition, I was like, that's for me. And then I got to test for it, and that was terrifying. But I remember Hanukkah was there and I just kept, like, looking at her and she was like, yeah. And I was like, all right.
Brian Lucci
It was a chemistry there. I don't understand how that that happens.
Hanako Greensmith
It was a chemistry read so it to the last round, and then they just wanted to read with me and her to see what made the most sense.
Brian Lucci
Oh, to see how you guys, you.
Joslyn Houdon
Basically do your last audition, you sign your whole contract, and then what feels like the entire world is there watching you do your final audition. And they had like a real camera guy. Greg, our camera guy, was there. I was like, oh, my God, that's a real cameraman. Yeah, I knew. And then I got it.
Hanako Greensmith
I probably wouldn't be here if they had asked me to do that. That is so nerve wracking. Even I walked in as like, I was cast. I've been in the show for years. And even I was like, hope I don't screw this up today. Like, I was nervous. There were so many.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
And I was like, literally in the chemistry.
Brian Lucci
Did you have to read with anybody else?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, two other girls.
Brian Lucci
All right. You both start as recurring characters. How did you become a series regular? Basically the same way.
Joslyn Houdon
So I was a recurring guest star with the option for a series regular pickup. So basically 12. I was recurring guest star, hoping that they would like me enough to keep me on the show. So every scene I was like, don't mess up. I was basically pooping myself for all of season.
Brian Lucci
How was it for both of you to join such an established cast on a TV show? Who wants to go first? This could be like Family Feud where you could pass it, where if you don't know and make the other people do it and then give a better answer and we'll steal it.
Joslyn Houdon
I think joining the show, I mean, you know, there's 12 seasons already and, you know, these people have been here for so long, they're friends and you're like, holy crap. Like, I have to come in here and just try to contribute something to this group of people who are all, like, at the top of their game. They've been here for so long, they all know what they're doing. Everyone's so funny. Yeah. I just basically tried not to mess up the whole time. Still trying.
Hanako Greensmith
You didn't mess up.
Brian Lucci
Are you kidding me? You're killing it.
Hanako Greensmith
That's right.
Sponsor/Advertiser Voice
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
You're elevating. You start out with Cara Cara.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I love Kara. She was so cool. So, Kara, sweet, sweet, sweet. She trained you?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, her and Michelle. But when I came on again, like, I came on as a guest star, like, no one really planned to have me be a regular. So I didn't really get the training. I didn't really join the cast thinking, like, oh, what an intimidating thing. I have to fit in, like, a big group of people. I was kind of like, I'm just a visitor. Like, I just hope I don't mess up and whatever. This is crazy. I've never gotten to be on a set this big. So, yeah, I just kind of, like, wheedled my way in. Really?
Brian Lucci
Like, I'm 200. I just counted as 252.
Hanako Greensmith
Congrats.
Brian Lucci
252 episodes. Can we play that back? So 252 episodes. I don't know what I was doing for the first 150. You know what I mean?
Hanako Greensmith
Doesn't matter.
Brian Lucci
You learn something every day. Like, but I'm like 250. And everyone that I talk to that comes in here, like, I think we all realize how lucky we are. Like, how amazing is to be a working to be on a TV show. Especially, like, during the strike, no one was working. I mean, like, we're counting pennies.
Joslyn Houdon
No. This is just such a dream to have gotten this job. I call it, like, my unicorn job. I'm like, there's only going to be one of these, and I'm just going to stay here as long as they'll allow me to be here. Because it's like, you know how lucky you are. Like, all of us.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. Yeah, you're right. It is such a unicorn job. That's a really good way to put it.
Brian Lucci
It is. And it's just you hook up with, like, this whole cast. Like, when you watch the show Friends.
Joslyn Houdon
You seen, like, I'm forcing her to watch it for my. For my birthday. Her and Brandon haven't seen it, so I'm going to tie their arms to their sides and force them to watch the pilot of Friends.
Hanako Greensmith
Going to be really.
Brian Lucci
You see the chemistry? You see that they're really.
Joslyn Houdon
She will see the chemistry.
Hanako Greensmith
Like, absolutely.
Brian Lucci
But anyways, that those shows, like, you see how you guys all get along. How was it for you coming? And was it pretty. Did you feel pretty good? I mean, or were you nervous?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, my God, I was so nervous. This was like, even the guest star slot. I had never done anything that significant before. Cara did teach me so much. She had just been there for so long. And she. I think she really wanted it to work because we got along so well. So she just really invested in making sure that I knew what I was doing, I wasn't messing up, and that I was just. You know, I felt supported. And she was. She was great for that. So what's this? Just filling out the shift report before we head back to 20. Violet, I know that you're happy at 20, but 51 is a truly special place, and you are a truly special paramedic. There are so many reasons that you should be here. I'm in. I don't have to list reasons, because I actually wrote down a whole bunch. I only need one. Getting the chance to be your partner.
Brian Lucci
That's what I love about our people. Like, yeah, and they'll help. They're not directing. They're just like, we got you, man. You know what I mean? And sometimes they'll turn it around, let them get warmed up. And there's this. There's this amazing love how people just, like, look out for each other.
Hanako Greensmith
Absolutely.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Okay, here's a solid one for you, and you could pass it if you like family, too.
Hanako Greensmith
Hey, girl. What's up?
Brian Lucci
Hey, lady. What cast member do you feel like you learn the most from?
Joslyn Houdon
Oh, current.
Hanako Greensmith
We have the same answer anytime I.
Joslyn Houdon
Feel like we're gonna have the same.
Hanako Greensmith
I actually. I think I know your answer, but mine might not be that one. Whoa. I know. I've learned different things from different people. You know yours.
Joslyn Houdon
No, I want to hear yours.
Hanako Greensmith
Well, you have yours, so you go.
Brian Lucci
I never did this with three people. This is fabulous.
Joslyn Houdon
Christian Stolti.
Brian Lucci
Really?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah. Yeah, he's amazing.
Brian Lucci
The Mouch man.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, the mouse man.
Joslyn Houdon
Just acting wise. And also just as a human being. I'm like, I have to read more. He's. He's amazing.
Brian Lucci
He's smart.
Joslyn Houdon
Smart.
Hanako Greensmith
Literally a genius iq. Literally.
Brian Lucci
Like, I just hang with him in the breeze way, and then, like, I wish I had more time with him.
Joslyn Houdon
He's so funny, so quick, so smart. You watch him do a scene, and you're like, what?
Hanako Greensmith
He's so thoughtful.
Brian Lucci
When I was lying on the ground in that burning factory, the one thing I thought about, my brothers and sisters, I treasure these moments when we're together, and I don't want to be looking down the dark end of that tunnel ever again.
Joslyn Houdon
I've asked him. I'm like, how long did you work on this for? Like, what did you. I'm just trying to, like, pick away at how to become him.
Hanako Greensmith
Right? Yeah.
Joslyn Houdon
He's awesome.
Hanako Greensmith
No, he's really steady, too. You know what I mean? And he. He never screws up. He's never the actor. Like, oh, man. What's. I don't remember. What is it, you know? He's never that.
Brian Lucci
He knows all the lines. He gets it all down. He knows.
Hanako Greensmith
He understands the story. He understands the tone. He's very steady. I feel like he knows when it's worth taking a risk to try something different and knows when it's not, because that's not what the story needs. He's just really analytical and really smart.
Brian Lucci
Can't wait.
Joslyn Houdon
But what's your answer?
Hanako Greensmith
I have so many. One of them, though, is Amon Walker.
Brian Lucci
Oh, my God.
Hanako Greensmith
He's just a legend. Yeah, we all miss him. I think he's just. He's someone who really knows how to stand in his power. And he's such an og. Like, he's been in the industry, but.
Brian Lucci
He gives you that power.
Hanako Greensmith
Absolutely. And that's why I think it's a great masterclass to work with him.
Brian Lucci
Your father stepped in, Kelly. He stepped up with Grissom. I've just spoken with the commissioner. He met with him personally, talked about the situation at 51, about how it not only affected me, but the whole house. How it affected you. Your father told Grissom that I am the type of leader who molds good men into great ones. And now you, Kelly, we're all the proof. He needs to know that that's true.
Hanako Greensmith
I think he inspires so many wonderful lessons in all the ways that are honestly possible when you're working with him. He's very generous that way.
Brian Lucci
I remember I went to a cigar bar or something.
Hanako Greensmith
That makes sense.
Brian Lucci
And, like, he had his leather coat on and a motorcycle, and he's like, the coolest thing in the world. And then he starts talking, and you just melt, and you're like, no way. You're do. You're hot.
Hanako Greensmith
I love that you want a cigar.
Brian Lucci
Date, but I've heard that, too. Like, he's ridiculous. Like, he's so good at his craft. He knows everything. Like, he's got gravitas.
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, he takes it so seriously in the best way. Like, it's not obnoxious at all. It's super intentional, super thoughtful, super humble.
Brian Lucci
Wow. I love that. What cast member made you the most nervous or excited to meet?
Hanako Greensmith
All right, take it away, Dermot. Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
Joslyn Houdon
My Best Friend's Wedding. I was like. I remember when he came to. To set, and I was like, oh.
Hanako Greensmith
My God, the morning I wake up, now we're bros.
Joslyn Houdon
So I'm better. I'm not nervous anymore. Yeah, he's awesome.
Brian Lucci
Oh, my God. He just didn't. He just did a scene the other day that I watched it.
Joslyn Houdon
I was in the elevator.
Brian Lucci
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, that was a beautiful scene.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
And the lady's hitting on him. The mayor or whatever.
Joslyn Houdon
He didn't have his ring.
Hanako Greensmith
I was just wondering if maybe sometime you and I go grab a drink. It's just that in my experience, it's a rare thing to meet a man who isn't intimidated by a woman in my position. But no pressure, obviously.
Brian Lucci
That's just. I'm. I'm married. I was. So I'm not in a place to thank you again. That's the scene.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, the elevator. Like, I texted him.
Joslyn Houdon
I was like, the elevator scene.
Brian Lucci
Oh, my God. Yeah. He's wonderful, and he's a good man. So did you say who makes you nervous?
Hanako Greensmith
Well, at first it probably was Alberto Rosende because he was my scene partner. But then when I came on and I realized Alberto was going to be homie, I was nervous, ironically, for David Eigenberg. Really makes no sense now that I know him.
Brian Lucci
No, he's a lovey dovey, but he's crazy. I mean, in a good way.
Hanako Greensmith
I know. He's so crazy.
Brian Lucci
I love him. He pops around. All right, Hanukkah Luch. When Joslyn joined the show, what were your tips or tricks for getting her situated?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, God, I don't have any. Honestly, I felt like you didn't even really need me that much.
Brian Lucci
Why? Because she was so trained or.
Hanako Greensmith
No, I feel like you just locked in really hard, really fast. Like you. I didn't feel like I needed to show you anything genuinely, because we have a lot of fiddly little props. There's a lot of little intricate items that I'm not accustomed to using. Exactly. You have man hands. And so, Jocelyn, I don't know you. I don't know. I hope I was helping some regard, but truly, you've been crushing it.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah. She showed me med craft.
Hanako Greensmith
I showed her crafty at med. I said, club Med, come, come get the best snacks in the game.
Joslyn Houdon
They have these, like, little cinnamon candies. Amazing.
Brian Lucci
They got a lot of cinnamon stuff. All right, Jas.
Joslyn Houdon
Yes.
Brian Lucci
Anything you remember learning from Hanko about becoming a paramedic?
Joslyn Houdon
About becoming a paramedic or figuring out.
Brian Lucci
The vibe on the fire cast, you could come with either one.
Joslyn Houdon
What I learned from Hanako in regards to becoming a paramedic I think sometimes. Sometimes I would just look at her, and she's like.
Hanako Greensmith
I'm like, okay, got it. About what?
Joslyn Houdon
I don't know, like, when to take out the stretcher. I'm like, okay. Yep. And she'd be like. I'm like, all right, got it. Yep. Like, but it was subtle. It wasn't like. It's never condescending or anything. It's not like, you're new. Let me show you. But it would just be like, like, well, let's wait a second. I'm like, all right, cool. Like, all right. And then also, like, I think her and Michelle. I remember when I first got here, and there's, like, explosions and special effects and fire and, like, me in my. My own life, I would be like, overreact. But they're, like, really calm when they respond to emergencies.
Brian Lucci
Yeah.
Joslyn Houdon
So I just kind of tried to steal that from both of them because they're like, all right, this girl's arms cut off. Cool. Let's get her in the ambulance and let's get it going. You know, like, you can't freak out. And I think that would be.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, they're common.
Joslyn Houdon
So I was like, ah, this is what we're supposed to do.
Hanako Greensmith
Great.
Joslyn Houdon
Because I don't think I would be that calm.
Brian Lucci
What do you think is the most iconic scene that your characters have shared?
Joslyn Houdon
I think the C section, for sure.
Brian Lucci
Yeah. Oh, that's it. The C section.
Hanako Greensmith
I would say that was the most intense scene we've shared as paramedics together.
Joslyn Houdon
For sure.
Hanako Greensmith
Don't give up. Can you do a C section or something?
Joslyn Houdon
We're not allowed to do that, ma'.
Hanako Greensmith
Am. Who cares? If it'll save her, then just do it, please.
Joslyn Houdon
It is really not that simple.
Hanako Greensmith
No back. I just did an obstetrics rotation for comment.
Brian Lucci
Got.
Hanako Greensmith
Describe it on two C sections. It was an entire day's worth of material. And it had so much rehearsal, so much prep time, it almost ran like a play. Cause you would go through it with all the props, you know, all of the moments with all the actors, and it was like. It would be like, 10 pages of material.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah. And it was also, like, a moment in the show where our characters, Hanukkah, Violet, was like, get out of here. And then Novak's like, nah, if you're going down, I'm going down with you. So I think that's where our bond really solidified. Solidified.
Hanako Greensmith
You should step away. There's no point in both of us risking.
Joslyn Houdon
No way. I'm not going Anywhere. We are in this together. And then Hanukkah's like, opening a uterus and there's like a real baby that's covered in yogurt and jam. And I'm like, why does the baby smell delicious?
Brian Lucci
A real baby?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah. So we had a real. We had a robot baby and then we had a real baby, but the real baby can only work for 15 minutes. And then you can't put makeup on the real baby, but you can put yogurt, but you can put warm food products. So our makeup artist Karen has this like, crock pot in the hallway and she's like. And then she's like, painting the baby and I'm like, it smells amazing. I'm so confused.
Hanako Greensmith
It was a delicious day.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Okay, well, flip that. What's the most iconic scene you've seen out of other people do on your show? Like, something that really hit you like that?
Hanako Greensmith
I'm trying to think. I mean, honestly, weirdly. Okay, this isn't probably the most accurate answer, but it's the one that's most on my mind because it's from this season, I think the scene between Miranda and Taylor with the OB at the beginning of the season when Miranda finds out that her pregnancy wasn't viable. Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I'm sorry, babe.
Joslyn Houdon
Babe?
Brian Lucci
For what?
Hanako Greensmith
Hey, I just. Gus, I just. Like, I should have waited a few days to tell you or taken another test.
Brian Lucci
No, you don't need to apologize to me for anything. Bring this together every step of the way.
Hanako Greensmith
Damn, that was really beautiful. I love the way it was shot and I just thought that she just brought her a game in a really profound way.
Brian Lucci
We gotta take a quick break, but when we come back, there's a ton of good stuff coming your way with Hanako Greensmith and Josie. Goodbye, Kyle.
Hanako Greensmith

Hanako Greensmith
Big.

Hanako Greensmith and Joslyn Houdon, otherwise known as Ambulance 61s Violet Mokami and Lizzie Novak. What's special about your character's backstories that the audience might not know about? Who wants to go first?
Hanako Greensmith
Dawson has a better answer. I think.
Joslyn Houdon
I think there's been little clues since I joined. There was the episode where we responded to Almost Suicide, where the guy was hanging and Novak kind of, I think.
Brian Lucci
I fell on you tarp.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah, that was really fun. They let me do that. I was like, I need to actually do this stunt. And Hanako, cut him.
Brian Lucci
You cut the rope?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. Okay, let's get him down now. Novak, try to take off some of the weight.
Joslyn Houdon
Are you all right?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, I'm okay.
Joslyn Houdon
We respond to the suicide, and then Novak kind of overreacts. And then Violet's like, yo, what? And then the episode with the woman whose husband was dead. So I think there's been some trauma in her past. With the family. Yeah. The family member passing away. And then we find out more about that later.
Brian Lucci
I love that when they slow burn it. You know what I mean? And you have the opportunity to slow burn that arc. What about you?
Hanako Greensmith
I literally don't know. We haven't really gotten into Violet's past at all. All I know is that she's got family that probably expected or wanted more for her as far as becoming probably like a nurse or a doctor, let's say. But other than that, I haven't really talked about my family ever or where.
Brian Lucci
I come from in real life. Is it okay to say, like, you were cello?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, my. My dad's a cellist. My mom's violinist.
Brian Lucci
So they wanted you to be. And you were like, no.
Hanako Greensmith
In real life, they're like, please, God, don't do that. They're like, you. I can guarantee you, you won't make money doing that acting.
Joslyn Houdon
She can tell us.
Hanako Greensmith
Chance.
Joslyn Houdon
She cellos.
Hanako Greensmith
No. It's been so long.
Brian Lucci
And sing.
Hanako Greensmith
Yes. That was more of what I did. I went to school for musical theater, so.
Brian Lucci
Really?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. It's been a minute.
Brian Lucci
Carry a note across the street I wish to God I could sing.
Hanako Greensmith
Try. Just try it.
Brian Lucci
I cannot.
Joslyn Houdon
What about a rap?
Brian Lucci
And you're. And you do the. You did a little spinning around.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
How long. How long do you do that?
Joslyn Houdon
I started ballet when I was three. Yeah. I basically did that until I went to university.
Brian Lucci
And then. How'd you know that you wanted to be an actress? You were, like, screwed.
Joslyn Houdon
Oh, man. Yeah, I just always dance. I did ballet, and then I went to National Ballet School of Canada, and then I just went to university. I did normal school, like, communications and public relations.
Hanako Greensmith
That's crazy to think about you doing that.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, right?
Hanako Greensmith
It's so not you.
Joslyn Houdon
It wasn't a fit.
Hanako Greensmith
And then.
Joslyn Houdon
And during that, I was like, all right, I. I'm gonna start acting. And then I just kind of did it.
Brian Lucci
And you just killed it. Ever since, I.
Joslyn Houdon
It's been going all right. I really just put all my eggs in the. In the acting basket.
Brian Lucci
What are your favorite things about Chicago, and how is it different from your hometowns?
Hanako Greensmith
There are a lot of things I love about Chicago. I love a lot of the people. There's a true grit that comes with this city. I've had amazing food in Chicago. I love the different neighborhoods in Chicago. Like, you go to different pockets, and they all. Once you get to live here long enough, you know exactly what kind of people you're going to get in.
Brian Lucci
Gin mills. There's a difference.
Hanako Greensmith
There's booze. There's booze. There's booze. That's also good. Yeah. Lots of reasons why I love Chicago. Architecture is beautiful, etc. Etc.
Joslyn Houdon
The food. Well, I think they have a great culinary scene here.
Brian Lucci
How much of Hanukkah was in Violet?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, probably a decent amount by this point. I'd say, like 70%.
Brian Lucci
Really?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
That's awesome. You can embrace that, I guess.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Your name?
Hanako Greensmith
My character name or my last name?
Brian Lucci
Your character name.
Hanako Greensmith
Mikami.
Brian Lucci
And who helped you pick that?
Hanako Greensmith
Derek Haas.
Brian Lucci
Because of what?
Hanako Greensmith
Because I'm Japanese.
Brian Lucci
Because she's Japanese. But that's cool that they gave you That I know.
Hanako Greensmith
I was really stoked when he called me about that.
Brian Lucci
Where's Hanako from? The real name Japan. I love that name. What does it mean?
Hanako Greensmith
Well, first of all, it's really common in Japan, which is why it's funny for me here.
Brian Lucci
That one's like, I never heard that name. I love it. I think it's badass.
Hanako Greensmith
Think it is unique here.
Sponsor/Advertiser Voice
True.
Brian Lucci
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
Well, not when you add a Z. The Z is kind of fun. Jocelyn. No, in Japanese it means flower child, but in my ultrasound, I had a Hana means flower and co means child, but hana also means nose. And in my ultrasound, I had a really big nose, so my parents literally named me nose child.
Brian Lucci
Really?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I like it.
Hanako Greensmith
Kind of stunning.
Brian Lucci
So here's yours. How much Jazzlyn is in Novak, Man?
Joslyn Houdon
I'd say like 90.
Sponsor/Advertiser Voice
I'd say.
Joslyn Houdon
I'd say a lot. I don't know. What do you think?
Hanako Greensmith
I would. I would say like 75, 80.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah, it's high.
Hanako Greensmith
It's high. I think modern day Jocelyn isn't maybe quite as chaotic as Lizzie.
Joslyn Houdon
Yes. Novak is me maybe like six years ago.
Brian Lucci
Does she make you lighten up?
Hanako Greensmith
Yes, for sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brian Lucci
She's like, don't give up. Yeah, Fiddler's Fart. Like, she's out there. You know what I mean?
Hanako Greensmith
I have to start using that.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, she don't care. Like, it is what it is. It feels like. And I kind of like it with you.
Joslyn Houdon
We kind of balance each other, you know, like.
Brian Lucci
Yeah.
Joslyn Houdon
I can't be all like, wow. Cuz then, I don't know, like, there was an episode, I think, in 12 where I was like, I want to be here. Like, cuz, I don't know, we have, like, a good thing and we. We balance each other.
Brian Lucci
What is a scene or moment that you feel defines your character?
Joslyn Houdon
Oh, I think that that scene with Violet in the ambulance where I was like, I just stop wanting to be a floater.
Brian Lucci
I watch it.
Joslyn Houdon
I just want to be here. There are perks to being a floater. You're always on the move from one place to the next. The dust never settles, really. You never have to sit on anything for too long. That worked for me. But being here and getting attached, it's.
Sponsor/Advertiser Voice
Just.
Joslyn Houdon
Hitting a little too hard, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. She is like, work hard, play hard. And some of that may be a coping mechanism or a defense mechanism, but I think, like, deep down she's like, I want to be part of, like, a team that does good things. And I think, like, taking away her. Her, like, facade she puts on sometimes, that's the scene that I think that comes out the most.
Brian Lucci
How about you?
Hanako Greensmith
I feel like I've been here so long, it's so hard to condense it down to one scene. It's, like, been an overall arc, but randomly. The one scene that came to my head is I think there was one episode where Violet just absolutely yells at a bystander. And I kind of feel like that scene defines who she is a little bit.
Brian Lucci
You guys might want to step back just a bit.
Hanako Greensmith
Hey, you're blocking my view.
Brian Lucci
Can't you move?
Hanako Greensmith
No, I can't move. We are trying to save this woman's wife. What is wrong with you? Act like a human. And so I think since then, I feel like that's kind of been her essence, what she's been trying to manage.
Brian Lucci
That's like when you really thought you understood who you were.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, yeah. That's her integrity, I guess.
Brian Lucci
Hanukkah and Jas, who are your favorite love interest or almost love interest for your character?
Hanako Greensmith
I think the Prince Charming of it all, Hawkins, was a great one.
Brian Lucci
You see the guy got smashed.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, he got smashed, but he was a really.
Brian Lucci
I think that was a good story.
Hanako Greensmith
It was a good story and it's gonna be. It's gonna. I think it's just been really hard for her to find anyone that will match the almost Disney essence of who he was. But realistically, I don't know. She's. She. I don't think Carver was realistically good for her. I don't think Flynn was right for her. So it just. It's just been kind of a. Just like with life, you just. You find what you find and see what works and what doesn't.
Brian Lucci
You lose who you lose.
Hanako Greensmith
How about you, Jocelyn?
Joslyn Houdon
I love my current love interest, and I can't say who it is.
Brian Lucci
There's a tease for the podcast.
Hanako Greensmith
It's me.
Brian Lucci
Let it go. Let it go.
Joslyn Houdon
Fans finally got what they wanted.
Brian Lucci
All right, we've got a lot of iconic lovey dovey couples on our show, but I really love the platonic. Platonic, Platonic.
Hanako Greensmith
You got it, boo.
Brian Lucci
I told you, boo. You call me boo. Love stories that we tell between friends and colleagues. You two are one of the fun friends. Where do you think the chemistry started?
Hanako Greensmith
Honestly, I feel like. Well, a lot of it's been written and that's been fun to play, but can we curse here? From the moment that Jocelyn, during the infamous terrifying screen Test that you had. She messed up. Like, a line, went, oh, shit balls. And I went, yeah, like her.
Brian Lucci
Oh, really?
Joslyn Houdon
It was like.
Brian Lucci
Then.
Joslyn Houdon
Oh, yeah, I swore. Yeah. But I think also. I think because we're actually friends in real life, so it's not, like, forced or it's not put on.
Hanako Greensmith
Right.
Joslyn Houdon
Right.
Brian Lucci
You guys, it's.
Joslyn Houdon
We're just actually friends.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
So, like, we're happy to get in there.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
What's up?
Joslyn Houdon
Like, oh, my God.
Hanako Greensmith
This happened.
Joslyn Houdon
It's just. It's just. And then some. And then part of our day, other. Other lines are coming out of our mouths, but we're. We're like.
Brian Lucci
We. We have a really cool thing going on with Imani.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah. And Ben.
Brian Lucci
Oh, my God. God, they're like two idiots together. They're bouncing off.
Joslyn Houdon
We are two idiots.
Hanako Greensmith
Also.
Brian Lucci
Also the kind of knit which you like.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Like, you could tell they absolutely love each other.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
All right, you ready?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
What's something that happens behind the scenes that you wish fans knew about?
Hanako Greensmith
I think it's pretty cute how we gather. We have a pretty cute cast that way.
Brian Lucci
Gather? You mean, like bowling and shit? Like, what do you mean?
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, no, we've done outings such as that. But, like, I mean, like, this last weekend, I couldn't make it, of course, but Dawson and everybody else, like, went to Christian Solti's place in Indiana.
Brian Lucci
I think I've seen a really. Oh, you went to Indiana?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
Like, driving all the way out there.
Brian Lucci
You got a little summer joint out there?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah, Christian does.
Brian Lucci
Oh, that's awesome.
Joslyn Houdon
And then Miranda and Tony and I went swimming, literally in October. I was like, this isn't cold.
Brian Lucci
You went in the freezing cold lake.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Kudos to you. So that's yours.
Joslyn Houdon
Question.
Brian Lucci
What do you think your partner is especially good at as an actor? I know, but goes unnoticed and she still should get more credit about it.
Hanako Greensmith
Okay.
Joslyn Houdon
I think Hanako is so good at being serious without being unlikable, and I think that.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, you. That is. That is.
Joslyn Houdon
That is very hard to do. And, yeah, she's like, even with you yelling at the bystander or whatever, it doesn't come off as unlikable, which is really, really hard to do.
Brian Lucci
It comes off as understandable.
Joslyn Houdon
And she can be, like, in charge and doing all these things, but it's never like, oh, this biatch. Like, you're just. It's just like, yep, I'm on board with whatever she's doing. I'm on board.
Hanako Greensmith
Wow, that was really nice. I really appreciate that Jocelyn. Okay, well, my thing. No, I'm ready. Honestly, Jocelyn is so. No, you do subtlety so well. Oh. Like, you're never over playing it. I have never experienced you overplay a moment so that almost like it ruins the essence of the moment. I don't know, I just. I'm always able to tell, like, there's a lot going on behind whatever it is that you're saying in a way that it just makes it always interesting to watch.
Brian Lucci
See, this is. This is. That's awesome. That's behind the scene kind of stuff.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
You know what I mean? That people don't know how much, like, every. I love that. If you could be a writer for a day, what is something that you'd like to happen to your character or something that you wish that something that you always wanted to happen as an actor?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, my God. Are you gonna say what I think you're gonna say?
Joslyn Houdon
What do you think I'm gonna say?
Brian Lucci
C section again?
Hanako Greensmith
No, no, no, no.
Joslyn Houdon
I wanna read you the C section. I want to dive in the water. I want it to be winter and I want. I want it to be a frozen lake and I want someone to be drowning and I want to go get them. I told Alec, but it got shot down pretty quick. So I, you know, I think. And then I also told Rick Le Fever, and he was like, no.
Brian Lucci
What about you?
Hanako Greensmith
I. I think. I think there could be a cool hostage situation with Violet and Novak. I think that could be really cool.
Brian Lucci
Have they thought about that?
Hanako Greensmith
I don't know. We have. We could get PD involved. That'd be a really fun time.
Brian Lucci
Without spoiling anything, be vague, what are you excited about for your characters this season?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, my God. It's hard to say because I don't really know what's going to happen. Oh, you know what I mean.
Brian Lucci
Show up.
Hanako Greensmith
I just show up. I hope with the lines learned and we just see what happens. I think what we're seeing right now for Violet, which I am enjoying, is she's a bit. She's the most in peace I have seen her in probably, you know, she's kind of accepted a lot of her romantic failings.
Brian Lucci
You're present.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, she's present. And she's just kind of seeing what comes professionally. And I think because there's less noise romantically, it's given her the opportunity to be just, like, really inspired by what she can do for the department in a way that I haven't seen her before.
Brian Lucci
So you're evolving, like, in that. I mean, if you're not evolving. Like, that's awesome. You're still interesting and all. And keep going.
Hanako Greensmith
Right.
Brian Lucci
I love that you're confident.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
You know what I mean? That's beautiful.
Joslyn Houdon
Okay. I am excited for this season.
Hanako Greensmith
There's a lot happening for Novak.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah, there's a lot. I mean, I did this taekwondo scene this morning at, like 7am I was.
Hanako Greensmith
Like, this is the best day of my life.
Brian Lucci
Oh, really?
Joslyn Houdon
On fire. Yeah. Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Because I seen you kick that bottle. Somebody sent me that video, just kicked.
Joslyn Houdon
A bag for, like, two hours. It was awesome. The director was like, let me know when the bottle. Yeah, yeah.
Brian Lucci
So go ahead, talk about the bag.
Joslyn Houdon
I just love everything that they've given me this year. I'm very excited. Either some new characters. There's some, like, love interest stuff. There's some backstage story. I. I love all of it.
Brian Lucci
Yeah. And it's good. Really?
Hanako Greensmith
It is good. It is good.
Brian Lucci
Okay, Hanuko and Jos, it's time for our lightning round of rapid fire questions. I'm going to ask you a series of questions, and you need to answer them quickly the best you can.
Hanako Greensmith
All right.
Brian Lucci
I'm going to start with Hanuko. Okay.
Hanako Greensmith
Get. Because I'm the most unprepared.
Brian Lucci
No, no, no, no, no. But I just want to tell you that David Eitenberg answered you for all three. Just I don't know what the hell.
Hanako Greensmith
Worst cast member, most unprepared.
Brian Lucci
Mary, Fire hose. Who would you marry? Who would you fire? He was all over you.
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, my God.
Brian Lucci
He got big time crushed.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah, he did mention you a lot.
Hanako Greensmith
Okay, well, all right, David. For all three.
Brian Lucci
Really?
Hanako Greensmith
I love that man.
Brian Lucci
Yeah. He loves you.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. No, I would do so many things for that man.
Brian Lucci
He loves you. Jocelyn, are you ready?
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
Mary Fire host.
Joslyn Houdon
Okay. Mary Violet.
Hanako Greensmith
Oh.
Brian Lucci
Oh, that's beautiful.
Joslyn Houdon
I would go into a fire with samurai.
Hanako Greensmith
Right?
Joslyn Houdon
And then hose David. Oh, yeah, yeah, hose him. He'd like them all down. Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I hope we. Listen, I did this for both of you. Hanukkah and Joslyn, if you could bring any character from any Wolf entertainment show. We're talking svu, Law and Order, Chicago pd Chicago. I mean, anywhere except your own show. Onto your show. Who would you bring?
Joslyn Houdon
Okay. Because I've listened to your podcast and everyone else has said Benson, Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order. Svu. I feel like she's taken care of. And then I think we should also get Rollins here so we could have Benson and Rollins and Carisi, because I would like to work with him.
Hanako Greensmith
My answer would be Missy Peregrine from FBI. Yes.
Brian Lucci
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
Really, really cool. I worked on their show for, like, three days. I played, like, a really small character, but I remember watching her, and I was like, that's a boss.
Brian Lucci
Really? Boss.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, no, totally.
Brian Lucci
Hannah. Go. And, Jocelyn, which Chicago Fire character would you most want to run into a burning building with?
Hanako Greensmith
Tony.
Brian Lucci
You can't say a real one.
Hanako Greensmith
Why?
Brian Lucci
Because it's part of the rules. No real fireman. Take it back. Who do you got?
Hanako Greensmith
David.
Brian Lucci
David Einberg.
Hanako Greensmith
David.
Joslyn Houdon
He dies first.
Hanako Greensmith
He would do it for me.
Brian Lucci
He legit trains, though.
Hanako Greensmith
He's got, like, We've done IFSI together. Illinois Fire Institute. Where you like him?
Brian Lucci
Yeah, I love that.
Hanako Greensmith
I loved it. And he's scrappy, and he would put his life down the line for anybody.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, I love that. He's in it, man.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. No, he's scrappy as hell.
Brian Lucci
All right, Hanukk and Jasin, which Chicago Fire character would you most want to go on a vacation with? And why?
Hanako Greensmith
Maybe her.
Joslyn Houdon
And for the people listening, Miranda in the middle of us. And that's the vacation cruise.
Hanako Greensmith
Really? Yeah.
Brian Lucci
I think Miranda's the bomb. Hanukkah. Jocelyn, if you could trade places with one Chicago Fire character. Don't point at each other. Which would you pick?
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, God. Turns on what I'm looking.
Brian Lucci
This is rapid fire.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
This is supposed to be Spot.
Joslyn Houdon
The Chief Dermot.
Hanako Greensmith
Oh, It's a really good answer, actually.
Brian Lucci
Yeah, there's no stealing of answers. Put McDermott on the board.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah, no, totally. I probably. I kind of am curious what a day in Miranda's life looks like on the show. God, it's so demanding. She does it so well. I'd probably wither into nothingness, but I'd love to just try it for a day. How do you do it?
Brian Lucci
She's all geared up.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah.
Brian Lucci
All right, here we go. The last one for the kids at home. Which of your fellow actors would be the best actual firefighter?
Hanako Greensmith
David.
Joslyn Houdon
Brandon. Just because he's new, I think. Brandon, in, like, three months.
Hanako Greensmith
Yeah. No, he's really smart.
Joslyn Houdon
Yes, he's smart. And he would train really hard. He would take it very seriously, and he would. He would be.
Brian Lucci
He's a cool new character.
Hanako Greensmith
Like, he'd be good in a crisis.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
You know, very steady, grounded, calm.
Joslyn Houdon
Yeah.
Hanako Greensmith
And wouldn't do anything zany. His character would do something maybe chaotic, but Brandon would not. Wow.
Brian Lucci
Well, that's it. You believe this? Do you guys have anything for me?
Hanako Greensmith
I have some criticisms. No, I'm scared.
Brian Lucci
I like to hear. So anyways, this is the world we live in and this is why we absolutely love it, because it's real people doing real things in Chicag, right? And I gotta say, this has been a blast. Please keep listening and come back. I can't thank you guys enough. I hope you guys liked and enjoyed it. Thank you so, so much.
Hanako Greensmith
Thank you.
Brian Lucci
