Welcome to the Otherworld, Patreon. I'm your host, Jack. Joining me for this episode is producer and today's co host, Haley Pearson. How are you, Hayley?
B
Hi, everyone. I'm good.
A
Welcome to your own show. How's it feel?
B
Thank you. It feels good. If anybody was under the impression that this is, like, a professional operation, I just want to let you all know that Jack is recording from a closet right now. He has clothes on hangers behind him, and he's sitting on the floor.
A
I am in a closet, but that is not where I normally record. I will have people know that this is a professional operation, and it's me being a professional that makes me know that I have to make sacrifices when I'm not in the studio and climbing the closet. But, yeah, this is not. This is not something we'll be using the video for because this is not one of my proudest moments. That being said, welcome to the other world. Patreon Hailey is here because this is actually an episode that. That she did all on her own. You went rogue and recorded some stories that caught your eye in the emails. We all kind of read the emails in the show. It's sort of a process, and there's different things that catch everybody's eye. I'll let you explain it, but for a while, there were some shorter stories that were really catching your attention. And you were asking me about this often.
B
Yeah, I mean, there's just, like. So. So there's only so many stories we can use. And you. We do, like, really pick and choose the best ones, but sometimes there's these really great short ones that just aren't long enough to go on main feed. Yeah, the short ones would definitely pique my curiosity a lot. And I put together these two because they both take place at an antique mall or a thrift store, and actually both happen to take place in upstate New York, which I didn't even put together until today.
A
That is a very interesting coincidence. And isn't the first story here about coincidences.
B
The first story is just, like, a major coincidence. Or I guess, what. What's the word that we use in, like, the paranormal sphere? Not coincidence.
A
Synchronicity.
B
Synchronicity.
A
Serendipity, maybe.
B
Yeah, it is synchronicity. It's, like, too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. There's so many things that line up, and you really got to, like, like, just wait and the payoff will come, I promise.
A
I think so. I like stories like that. I would say. I will say that when it comes to the paranormal. Ethan, there are certain times I've heard a story where I'm like, oh, maybe this is a big coincidence. But then even the thought of some of these being a coincidence is more outlandish than the idea of whatever supernatural thing they experienced in certain cases. Do you know what I'm saying?
B
Yeah. I mean, this one, there's just so many layers that it's like. I mean, I don't even know if you can call it, like, paranormal. It's just crazy.
A
Okay, so what is this first one? What's this one about? Who did it come from? Give me a little overview and then we'll get started.
B
Yeah. The first one comes from Ash. She's a death doula. This story happens while they're visiting her parents with her partner, and it has to do with a teacher from her childhood and her grandfather. It's. It's just there's too many elements to even kind of begin to describe.
A
Well, we could just listen and find out.
B
Yeah.
A
All right, this will be the first story, and then after this, we have one more. Anything else, Haley, before we get this started?
B
No. Enjoy.
C
Hi, my name is Ash. I live with my partner in Kingston, New York, in the beautiful Hudson Valley. I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and really appreciate being in nature. I am an artist and a death doula. So the practice of a death doula is they assist dying people and their communities with the thresholds at end of life, helping them to have the best death available to them and die in the most dignified way possible. So, yeah, being a death doula and being a part of those conversations and part of that world, you might assume that I've had some experience with paranormal things, but I haven't had a specifically paranormal experience that I can point to and say, this was extraordinary up until this experience that I'm going to tell you about. So I might start by just telling you, like, some random facts, and then at the point when it all clicks in, you'll understand why they were important.

Podcast: Otherworld
Host: Jack Wagner
Co-Host/Producer: Haley Pearson
Episode Date: January 21, 2026
This Patreon preview episode of Otherworld features host Jack Wagner and producer Haley Pearson presenting an anthology of two short, real-life paranormal stories. Both stories are connected by their setting—antique malls or thrift stores in upstate New York—and by the sense of synchronicity and strangeness surrounding the events. The focus of the preview is on the first story, recounted by Ash, a death doula, who describes an experience that blurs the line between an improbable coincidence and a possible paranormal phenomenon.
Podcast production is a team effort: Jack and Haley discuss their process for sorting through email submissions for the show. Haley notes that, because of time and episode structure limits, some intriguing short stories don’t make it onto the main feed despite their quality and memorability.
Short stories have unique appeal: Haley took initiative to record two shorter, thematically linked stories herself, highlighting how brief but impactful experiences can offer a different kind of intrigue.
"There's just, like, only so many stories we can use...sometimes there’s these really great short ones that just aren’t long enough to go on main feed. The short ones would definitely pique my curiosity a lot."
— Haley Pearson [01:25]
Focus on synchronicity in the paranormal: The conversation evolves into a discussion on the paranormal concept of synchronicity—events so improbable and layered that they feel almost guided or fated, rather than coincidental.
"The first story is just, like, a major coincidence. Or, I guess, what’s the word that we use in, like, the paranormal sphere? Not coincidence."
— Haley Pearson [02:06]
"Synchronicity. Serendipity, maybe."
— Jack Wagner [02:14], [02:15]
Supernatural vs. incredible coincidence: Jack shares his perspective that, at times, chalking phenomenal stories up to 'mere coincidence' feels more implausible than believing in the supernatural.
"Even the thought of some of these being a coincidence is more outlandish than the idea of whatever supernatural thing they experienced in certain cases."
— Jack Wagner [02:29]
Introduction of storyteller Ash: Ash, who lives in Kingston, New York, and works as a death doula, shares her background—and how, despite her line of work, she had not previously experienced anything overtly paranormal until the incident recounted here.
Teaser of the story: The story involves Ash visiting her parents with her partner and an encounter involving her childhood teacher and her grandfather at an antiques location. Ash hints at interconnected details that only make sense as the story unfolds, promising a revelatory moment.
"Being a death doula and being a part of those conversations and part of that world, you might assume that I’ve had some experience with paranormal things, but I haven’t had a specifically paranormal experience that I can point to and say, this was extraordinary up until this experience that I’m going to tell you about."
— Ash [03:52]
"If anybody was under the impression that this is, like, a professional operation, I just want to let you all know that Jack is recording from a closet right now."
— Haley Pearson [00:16]
"It’s like, too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. There’s so many things that line up...just wait and the payoff will come, I promise."
— Haley Pearson [02:16]
"There’s just too many elements to even kind of begin to describe."
— Haley Pearson [03:10]
The episode maintains the familiar, candid, and slightly irreverent tone that regular listeners expect, blending casual back-and-forth with thoughtful discussion on the nature of strange events. The tantalizing setup for Ash’s story draws listeners in without giving away the full narrative, a hallmark of the show's approach to teasing in-depth, first-person paranormal accounts.
This Patreon preview episode offers both an endearing look behind the scenes at the Otherworld team’s story-selection process and a compelling introduction to Ash’s story—a tale of mystery and synchronicity in upstate New York. With its focus on meaningful coincidences and the allure of the unexplained, the episode sets up for a broader exploration of how the unexpected can intersect with our everyday lives, especially in places as evocative as antique malls.
