I was calling it PFT even though the revenge was that he tried to take someone's head off, Nasrid's head off. And he rightfully was ejected from the game in game four. But still, revenge. You just knew he was going to come out and that's exactly what he did. He was on fire from the start. He was blocking threes. The spurs are an absolute problem. And, and as, as, as hard as the Timberwolves played and they look like even in the third quarter when they came out at halftime and there was no one in the stands in San Antonio, I don't know what they're doing. Get back to your seats. It just was too much. Too much. Spurs and they win easily and take a pivotal game five, halftime.

But what I saw from Wimby, at least like tonight and, and really through the playoffs, like Wimby is kind of, he's evolving so fast as a center. Like the knock against Wimby a couple months ago was like he doesn't really have that, you know, a great offensive low post game. And now we're seeing that. Oh yeah, Wimby can do that too.

So it's just a matter, it's a matter of time. He's going to be able, he's going to be the best center of all at like every skill set by the time it's all said and done. And right now, what's the stat, the pivotal game five that in a two, two series winner, game five wins 82% of the time.

Yeah, it's, it's, it's significant.

The spurs have done it. I think The spurs are 10 and 1 when they've won Game 5 of a series that's tied 22 and they look dominant tonight. And maybe, maybe I'm outing myself as not a die hard spurs watcher. I haven't seen too much of them. Dylan Harper. Oh yeah, Dylan Harper should be starting. Dylan Harper might be the best guard on that team and I understand that they've got, you know, two other players that they're paying significant amounts of money to, but I feel like Dylan Harper is the best player on that team's really good too.

I mean, Castle's really good.

They're good. I feel like Dylan Harper's the best, though.

I. I would. I would say Castle is. Castle. What he does defensively, too, is he's, he's very, very good. But. Yeah, no, they have a. I mean, Dylan Harper has been great in this series, and he's. He's helped out a lot, and it's. Yeah, they're good. They're just a good team all around. Like, there's. There's not a lot of holes when you have Victor Wembanyama standing in the middle. Like, you can just see it as the Timberwolves get frustrated. You just can't. They have to alter every shot. They have to take a lot of threes from guys they don't want taking threes. They shot, you know, 27% from three tonight. And that's a lot of the Wemby effect where it's like you can't go in the paint and, and you just. There's not a lot you can do when he's standing there. He's blocking threes. He's blocking threes. Like, he's just everywhere. His feels like his presence is just everywhere on the court and, and you're

thinking about him even when he's not there.

Like, you're. You're shooting a three now and you're like, oh, God, I hope their center doesn't block this three.

It's crazy. It's a freak show to watch. And it's his first playoffs. I don't.

And it was a. It was a close game with four left in the third. I think it was 72, 67 with four left in the third. And then after that, the spurs were just like, okay, time to slit their throats. And they did.

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like I said, I wouldn't be shocked if the Timberwolves could somehow find a way to win game six just because that's in their DNA. Like, you saw it even in the third quarter when they came out of halftime, and they're like, we're. We're going to fight and we're not going to give up. But they just ran out of gas. Anthony Edwards, he's still clearly not 100%. You could see it, like, at the. Towards the end of the game. I know it was kind of. It was. It was a 15, 20 point lead back and forth in the fourth quarter. But, like, he. He just kind of ran out of gas. He didn't have that burst. He didn't really want the ball. And I Don't blame him. Like, he's still coming back from injury. He had an incredible game for his knee, went backwards 10 days ago, and he had to play two. Two. You know, he had a crazy effort in game four and then has to come back and play game five. It's just. It's tough.

The odds are stacked against the Timberwolves right now, and it doesn't. It feels like they're maybe out of answers. Maybe the answer is just, you got to get Wemby to elbow some more people.

Gotta. Yeah. You gotta get under skin a little bit. I don't know. I feel like that's a mistake that Wimby's not gonna make again, now that he knows the rule where anyone in the face.

But I feel like you're right, they're limited right now, and is. He's not like a shell of himself. He's still really fucking good, but he's not. He's not capable of putting this roster on his back right now and winning series. So I'm just. I'm pumped. I'm. I'm very excited for Thunder. Spurs.

Yeah. Wemby, by the way, the. The first six. Six minutes of the game, he had 16 points. He just. He did come out, and he was like, I'm just going to assert my dominance. Did you also see I. The spurs secret weapon is just that Pop is still around because I don't know if you guys saw the clip that Pop, like, met Wemby at the airport and talk to him. Like, the minute he stepped off the plane, he was just talking to him. I feel like having a guy that knows basketball the way Pop doesn't. He's not in the best health, but, like, he knows basketball better than anyone, and he's just a secret weapon. They'd be like, oh, yeah, let me just give Wemby a couple tips here, and then everything will probably fix itself.

Also, Tim Duncan and David Robinson just being around, like, I'm sure they're, you know, they're at the games are probably their pregame. I guess those are probably two good people to. To bounce them some things off of yeah, yeah.

Yeah. And then the Sabers came back. They. They tie the series in Montreal. Tough game. This series has been awesome. The crowds have been awesome. And I'm excited that we're going to get like. It did feel like if the Canadiens. We talked with Biz on. On Monday's show that it felt like it was teetering on, like the Canadians just dominating the rest of the series. But now we get two. Two and we're going back to Buffalo. It's going to be fun.

Yeah. Tage Thompson, tag against the Machine. He had that goal tonight that. I don't know if that's a spot in Montreal on the ice that he knew about when he fired that puck against the boards, but it looked like he knew what he was doing. Yeah, it looked like he knew that there's a spot where the puck will carry him. Strangely, somehow the goalie didn't look for it, but knew about it. But it looked like it was something that was unintentionally so I would like to hear what. What wit and biz have to say about that. If that's something that, that players know around the league that there's certain spots in certain arenas. It's like, yeah, you can. You can fire something in there.

And they said on the broadcast, like wherever the Zamboni is, that's like a thing, you know, that's. That's a common spot everywhere because that's where the Zamboni comes out. But they said the. The Canadiens coaches had told the goalie that he comes too far out in those situations and to stay in goal. And then they're like, if he had just come out of the goal like that probably doesn't go in.

I know they didn't. The, the ref was literally. It looked like he was. The ref was like, I'm not, I'm not looking for this. Like, he, he basically turned his head right at the second that he got cross checked.

Yeah, he. He was like, that's. Listen, this is playoff hockey. I'm not going to step in for every tiny little infraction that we have. The guy like straight up a cross check to the front of his neck. Like it looked like his vocal cords got crushed. And I mean, shout out hockey players. Caulfield didn't even really seem to appeal to the ref.

Which is a lot like the debate they get in every year when the educational rankings come out. When they're like, as long as we can finish above Mississippi, we're happy.

Yeah, I know I probably should. Sitting around waiting is not. Not the most fun.

Real question when you do that, what are you thinking about? Are you just on your phone the whole time or you. Is there like a. A game that you've been playing to keep yourself occupied? How's that go Though.

No, I actually. At rbc, I actually fell asleep in that chair.

And I realized then when everyone started texting me that I was. I looked miserable, and I was like, oh, crap, I'm asleep. So then I just went to the car and slept.

Yeah. I honest, I actually doubt. I did not touch my clubs that day. I literally just sat around for. Yeah. I don't think I got out of a seat or that. The driver's seat for about seven or eight hours.

It's. It's definitely humbling. But honestly, it's kind of fun, though. You just get to sit around, watch everybody do their routines, kind of figure it out. But it's.

It's kind of motivating, too, at the same time, because you're just watching everybody else play, and you're like, I have zero chance of playing. Yeah. So, yeah, sitting there is not a bunch of fun. But, hey, I'm practicing. I get to go. I mean, I went to Hilton Head for, I don't know, 48 hours and then drove up and down from Miami. I don't know, three different times in a matter of two days. So a lot of. A lot of traveling going on, but it's a lot of fun, man. It's cool. It's good to be back.

I'm trying to put a positive spin zone on it. I feel like you still are playing golf, and you're still playing really good golf. You shot. You shot 29 on the back nine.

Yeah.

Yeah, no, it was good. Honestly. You're gonna Laugh. It was the worst 64 I've ever shot. It was.

I hit the ball unbelievably, like, in those video games. Like, back in, like, the Tiger woods thing. You just. I hit it to, like, 5 to 10ft all day and just didn't hold a putt on the front nine. And then, I don't know, the back nine. I actually made a few pots, which is nice. And the next thing I know, I actually was thinking about that. Funny enough, I had, I don't know, like, a three foot on the last one. I was like. I wasn't sure if I'd ever shot 29 before, like, even in practice, but I was told I did it once. That's so. That was pretty cool.

I was legit. I was legit worried. I was like, dude, if you missed this putt for 29, it's gonna look real bad.

Yeah, yeah, There's. There actually was a moment, funny enough, Hank was brought up the other day because Hank played with my caddy. I don't. Hank, when was that? Like, what, February, two months ago?

[Hank]

Yeah.

[Brooks Koepka]

Yeah. And I think at one point, somehow Ricky was like, how did you let those guys beat you? Like, it was that big. He was like, you can't be serious. Like, I mean, he goes, I've watched you play a lot, but they beat you. I'm like, yeah, yeah. They smoke me too.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. Hank also told us after that that your caddy was just like, what the hell is up with this Blake of the year shit? Like, why do they keep saying this?

[Brooks Koepka]

It is amazing to me. To this day, I think I would say once a week, somebody I'm playing with is like, hey, can you explain this Blake the year thing? I'm like, yeah, you just got to be good at really nothing and then just hang around, be named Blake, and that's about it.

And by the way, this year, we have high hopes for you, because the last few years, you've been traveling, like, abroad and stuff. This might be the first time you get to compete for Blake of the year when you're actually in America in a good time zone.

It could be. When. When are we doing it? That's the question.

It's always. Yeah, it's always the British Open week,

and I'm always away, and I'm like.

We try to do it early in the day, but then we got. We got some other Blakes that might be on west coast time. So it's really. You're. You're at a disadvantage when you compete in the Open Championship. Maybe we can do it, like, a week early. We can record it.

Did you break your old putter, or did the putter break?

I saw. I saw a comment you made that I never even thought about. You were talking about, like, the technology and, like, the equipment trucks that are on the PGA Tour versus where you were like, is that. That's. Was that shocking when you got back and you're like, oh, there's all this stuff that I haven't tested yet.

[Brooks Koepka]

Yeah. So they had. They had a truck on live, but it. Basically, the guy, Ben, who was running it, he had a bunch of my old equipment, or not my old equipment, but like, backup sets or, like, a backup set of irons, some wedges, things like that. But I never had the opportunity to be like, oh, wow. Like, there's a whole bunch of putters sitting here on the green and I'm not putting well, I can try this or if there's a driver, a new driver that comes out and I can test that and see where that's at. So, yeah, it's a bit weird. And come back, you're kind of overwhelmed because you go down the line and I think there's probably, if I had to guess, probably like this week, 10 to 12 trucks. So you can. Yeah. So imagine, you know, they, each of them probably have three or four drivers. So if, you know, if you want to try to test something, it's. It's available and. Yeah, it just helps always being a little fresher.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

Because you were going to switch up your irons too, and I, I remember you said that you. When you practice, is it on the range you only hit the even numbers or the odd numbers?

[Brooks Koepka]

The odd. I'm more of. I'm an odds guy.

So when you're, when you're thinking about switching up all of your irons, are you also at least trying out the evens?

[Brooks Koepka]

Yeah, I, I think I only hit the evens when I'm on the course. I don't think I've ever really hit them in a practice setting. It's funny because I was looking at my irons the other day and the nine iron, seven, nine iron and seven iron are getting to the point where I'm like, I gotta get a new set because they're, they're quite worn and

the 8 looks like, just brand new.

[Brooks Koepka]

Yeah, the A looks fresh.

That's awesome.

That's awesome. Do you think about that when you're on the course? Like, because for, for those of us that stink at golf, it's like we get obsessed with, like, the certain clubs that we like and we'll find or any reason to hit a seven iron because it's like, oh, I feel comfortable with a seven iron. When you're on the course, are you like, I'd rather hit the six because I practice with that more.

[Brooks Koepka]

No, no. Never gets to that point. Hopefully. Hopefully it's not like that. But you can kind of tell because I remember at one point it's usually right around US Open. I think I changed my irons. So we're coming up like on that time anyways, in a month. But, like, it'll get worn out where Ricky's. Like, it doesn't really matter. You can hit nine iron or eight iron. It's Going to go the same distance. Because there's no grooves on it, it won't spin.

[Big Cat]

I was.

[Hank]

I. I was asking Ricky about that, and he said the. The US Open at Shinnecock on 17, like a par three. He was like, just hit the nine iron because it's basically an eight iron.

[PFT Commenter]

And that's what you did. Like, center of the green. Sealed. Sealed the victory.

How does a new putter feel? Because I feel like everything I've read from this course this weekend, it's like it's gonna just be all putting. Like, Rory even said, like, everyone can just bomb it and you don't have to think much off the tee box. But then the. Where you land it and then puts is going to be the tournament. So does the putter feel good? Is it. Is the new putter, like, you're like, oh, this is something. Something that I can work with.

It feels good right now. After Thursday, after Thursday or Sunday's round, I'll let you know.

Because we had Shane Bacon on as well. He had you as one of the guys that could win this tournament. The. The, like, course. Like, are you. Do you feel comfortable with the course? You played it a few times. Are you feeling good about it?

[Brooks Koepka]

Yeah, I. We played it back in 2018, but I think I. You have to look this up. But I think it was the last time the PGA was in August, so It was like two weeks after we won in 18. So it was kind of a. I don't. Yeah, it was. Yeah. Yeah, it was a bit of a hangover.

Yeah.

[Brooks Koepka]

So it was a bit of a blur. Like, there was. Sometimes I stepped on the tee boxes, and I was like, I can't remember this hole at all. And then other times I was like, oh, I. I'm very familiar with this hole. It was the back nine a couple holes. I just had no clue. I don't even remember them. But it's. It's a good golf, but it's. I think I'm probably the only. I, to my knowledge, the only tour player that doesn't. I, I think it was back in 2016 or 17, I just found myself. I would look at. I'd look up from, like, 150 yards and look down in the book, and I'm like, this pin looks like it's in the bunker. You can't miss it.

You can't miss it, right? And then you look up and you're like, wow, that pin's not really that tucked. And it just, like, gave me all these thoughts. I'm like, who cares? Just make it more reactive. Like, I think of it as, like, anybody else, you just ball a piece of paper up, and you just throw in the trash can. You look like Kobe. And then all of a sudden, you know, you start thinking about it, and it's just brick city.

So by not not knowing the yardage whatsoever, you just say, like, hey, like, whatever club you want to give me, just give me the club. Let me just hit the ball.

Yeah, a lot of times, I mean, I, I even have the club out before Ricky even tells me the yardage. Like, you can kind of just eyeball it and have a good idea within like 10, 15 yards of what it is. Or just looks like it's maybe a nine iron, eight iron, whatever it is. And then Rick. Yeah, it's up to Rick. So if he doesn't give the right number. Yeah, a lot of trouble because I'm not backing them up.

The. So, so how. How often in a round are you. It kind of. It doesn't happen very often. There might be twice a tournament, maybe once a tournament where it's. It's like, hey, I think it's a hard seven. He's like, I think it's a six. We go back and forth and it just kind of depends if usually he'll give his re. You know, you give like a. A 10 second reasoning why. It's like, hey, listen, there's 10 long at the pin. It should be fine. Or I give my reasoning of why and then you just kind of talk it out and figure it out from there. And usually there's a good miss. So you're just trying to miss on that side.

It would speed up play. Because if you think about it, like a lot of times when you hit it so far offline. I know some. Some people don't apply, but I definitely am in this category. You hit it really far offline. There's no sprinkler heads. And trying to figure out how far you are is a nightmare. And the caddy's gotta walk like 80 yards sometimes just to figure it out. But rangefinders would speed it up for sure.

I don't understand. It's like, if you think about it, like, even when you guys go play or we go play, we're using rangefinders and it's just zap it. You hit the pin and you go. It's like 135. Boom. Just hit it.

Okay. We now welcome on a very, very, very, very special guest it is our good friend Shane Bacon and we're getting ready for the second major, the PGA Championship. Shane will be on site. Shane, we want to talk all PGA Championship, but before we do that, dude, you're playing in the longest day. You're playing to maybe play in the US Open. Can we just, can you explain to us everything? Cause I, we kind of understand it. So like, like start from the beginning. How, how, how have you gotten to this point where you, you, how many qualifiers did you get into? And then what is the longest date? Just do it all. I want to brain dump it.

[Shane Bacon]

Yeah. So for the US Open, obviously the, the whole Open part of the name, in theory, anybody could get in. You know, I think you have to have a, basically a zero handicap or better to apply to get into a qualifier. They call them local qualifiers. They have them everywhere. So they've got them in Chicago and I think they might have one in Alaska. I mean they've got them all over the place. Typically, depending on how competitive the area is. So northeast, a little bit more competitive. Arizona, Florida, places like that are going to be competitive. There'll be four or five spots out of about 100 guys to basically progress through the qualifying stages. So you go local. If you get through that, then you get into the final qualifying day, which is golf's longest day. And then that cuts down to about 12, 13 sites around the country. You apply and rank which ones you want to play in and then hopefully get into the one you want to get into. And yeah, on June 8th, we'll rock and roll. It's 36 holes that day. I did it in 2019. But it wasn't golf's longest day. It was. I had to play with all the pros because I was working for Fox. We were doing all the USGA stuff, stuff. So this will be the first time I'm actually doing it on golf's longest day. But yeah, played well. It was blowing like 30 miles an hour in Connecticut. Kind of got in the house at two under par and that was the number I needed.

[PFT Commenter]

So, so how many people. This is awesome. So how many people on golf's longest day then get to qualify for the US Open? Like, what are your chances looking like?

[Shane Bacon]

I mean, not, not great if we're being honest. But I mean, you know, I, I think depending on the site. So they'll do, you know, like last year, Max played in one in Ohio. Okay. That one has like 15 spots because that's where all the pros go after the Memorial. My spot in the northeast that I'm likely going to play in will probably have four spots out of, I don't know, maybe 100 guys in the field. So, I mean, you have to play well. You probably have to shoot, you know, three under ish each round. So probably got to touch six under or so, obviously, depending on condition. But yeah, I'm fired up. I like when I did it in 2019, I was working. I had to fly basically on like a late night flight to get into Dallas. Had never seen the golf courses before. I wouldn't exactly say I was preparing the right way. I'm gonna go after PGA week and play practice rounds of the courses up here that are hosting. And so in theory, hopefully I'm a little bit more prepared. But, you know, getting through local is kind of the goal. And then if you get into sectional and you, you know, put yourself in a position after 18 holes, you know, you never know.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Big Cat]

So it's 36 holes in a day, which sounds crazy. What. What is that like? And you have to walk the entire time. So by. By the end, is it. It actually, like an exhausting day of golf?

[Shane Bacon]

Yeah. I remember I had my best buddy in the world caddy for me in Dallas. He's not a big golfer, just a good dude. I like, I'd prefer good dude over, you know, kind of good caddy. I'd rather have the hang, you know, and we got done and we went to the only place you go after a 36 day, whole day of walk and went to Chili's and had a big meal.

[PFT Commenter]

Respect.

[Shane Bacon]

That was the moment too. And I'll send you guys the photo after we get off air. But. But a guy across from me at the bar, I'd never seen this before at a Chili's. Was having a glass of red wine and corn on the cob a la carte.

[PFT Commenter]

That's high class. Yeah.

[Shane Bacon]

You know, I mean, you know, you could. You could. You could experience certain indulgences, I think, around major, obviously, restaurateer places, but that was pretty impressive to see. But went to Chili's. I mean, exhausted. I mean, it's a long day, you're walking a lot. Depending on weather. Obviously it's hot. It plays into it as well. That was one of the cool things. Last year I mentioned Max. I mean, he. He did it he carried his own bag for both rounds, which is pretty crazy. So I got a guy that caddy for me when I got through US Amateur qualifying out here, and he hit me up on Instagram to caddy for me. He was awesome. Kind of an aggressive caddy in terms of the way he wanted to play. And so I hit him up when I got through and said, do you have any interest in doing this? And so I think he's going to be on the bag again for me in a few weeks.

The whole thing is so awesome. The fact that you're going through this whole process, I mean, rooting for you. Yeah. It sounds like you're saying, like, you got to go. You know, you got to touch six under over the course of the 36 holes, but you shot two under in the qualifier. Like, you. Do you have it in you? Do you think that? I feel like I'm asking Max. When we first had him on, I was like, can you win the Masters? Can you do this?

[Shane Bacon]

He almost did.

Yeah. I mean, I. I think I'm playing. First of all, I think golf is one of those things I don't know about. I mean, obviously, I know Hank is always switching between how he's gonna play, but, Big Cat, you have kids, and you kind of get a little older in life, and all of the. You cared about in your life becomes a little less important. I think that's been good for my golf game, is I don't, like, live and die. I mean, obviously, I'm not playing for anything. I mean, I have, like, jobs that actually, you know, provide for my family. So me playing competitive golf is the fun part of my life. I think it used to make me nervous.

Yeah.

[Shane Bacon]

So, yeah, I mean, I think I'm. I'm capable of going out there and doing it. I think I'm playing solid enough golf right now to go into it. And I'm actually. I had a long conversation with my wife after I got through you know, last week or whatever, and I said, I'm gonna play a lot of golf over the next few weeks. I hope you're okay with that. And she was pretty supportive of it and said, yeah, absolutely. Practice, you know, get yourself ready. So, you know, come that Monday, I actually feel like I'm at least feel like I walk into it prepared more than I. I did a few years ago.

Have you had the conversation with your bosses yet, being like, hey, the US Open, like, I might be playing in it?

[Shane Bacon]

Well, you know, what's funny is I'm doing an event I'm doing a Korn Ferry Tour event that weekend before golf's longest day. And so I had to call my boss when I got through. And they're big, you know, they're all big golf guys. They understand the whole deal. But I call them, like, can you find somebody to cover for me on Sunday? They're like, we got you. We'll find somebody. So, yeah, I mean, honestly, I think the doors in theory open more if this was the case. I think if I got into a US Open, the opportunity to maybe kind of split time between broadcasting, playing, things like that. I know Amelia Duran, who does a great job in terms of golf broadcasting, did this a couple years ago, I believe, at a US Women's Amateur. She was making a run. She'd play in the morning and broadcast in the afternoon. But I mean, again, I just like the fact that it exists, the fact that this opportunity exists. It's very unique to golf. You know, I mean, we're not going. I mean, you kick a 40 yard field goal, it's not like you're walking onto a team, right?

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Shane Bacon]

The fact that this is an option is pretty cool.

[PFT Commenter]

It is very cool. It's the, it's the US Open. Like, I like that they still have this where anyone could theoretically qualify. Like, Hank is going to qualify someday. I'm going to manifest that right now on a dream board.

[Big Cat]

How, how, like, closely do they have to look at your handicap? Like, if. If Hank showed up and he was like, yeah, I'm a zero handicap, and then he just happened to shoot like the best golf that he's ever played and he qualifies, is somebody going to go back and be like, hey, your handicap was actually. You were lying about that.

[Shane Bacon]

Well, I think it's. You have to put your. Your gin, or gin, whatever we call it, number in. And so I think you have to fudge the scores on the front end. So you've got to do a little prep. But I mean, there's guys at every qualifier. You know that, the Ryan French buddy of mine, the Monday Q guy that does a great job, he'll post those. You know, the guys that shoot 115 and 118 and stuff in these qualifiers. I mean, there are a lot of dreamers in golf across the board. There's a lot of guys that are 45 that, you know, shoot two or three under at their club and think they're going to make it on the Champions Tour. I think that's why golf is so special, is the fact that, that we have that run in nine holes where you're like, man, you know what? I might actually be pretty good at this game. It obviously bleeds into, you know, trying to, I think I could get into a US Open.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

Yeah. It humbles you real quick. So when you're, when you're doing the longest day, you've got 36 holes. Is there a break? How does that work? Is there a break after 18, like a morning round, then an afternoon round?

[Shane Bacon]

Yeah, I mean, you, you, depending on the site, it might be two different golf courses, so you're basically driving between them. I think I went to a subway in 2019. I'm in a Subway in a minute, but I think I went to a Subway and got a sandwich on the way and can, you know, arrive, hit two or three balls and go. I mean, it's pretty quick in terms of the turnaround, but yeah, I mean, you're, you're snack and eating throughout the day and, you know, you feel like one of those cyclists that's using the gel and all that stuff.

Yeah, I, I.

Speaking for myself, if I was lucky enough to ever be that good at golf and get to the, the longest day, if I was shooting like 10 over par in the first round, I just wouldn't play the second 18. I'd be like that. No, absolutely not.

Listen, dudes. Pft. There's a lot of guys, especially the pros, you know, that are big names that are trying to get in the US Open. If the first 18 doesn't go their way, they are not continuing their afternoon.

I mean, first like four holes. If those don't go my way, yeah, I'm out at that point. And then our good friend Danny Woodhead is the first alternate from, from his area too, so he might get in. It's, it's bullshit that they're so good. But then you remember that they're professional athletes like LeBron. I actually had this bet with someone. I can't remember who, who was I talking with? I can't remember who I was telling. Talking with, but I said that I would, I would put money on LeBron if, if you say the year after he retired or when he retires, give him a full calendar year. If he's into his good golf as much as we think he might be. I think he'll be a five handicap within the year. Like, that's, that's just what a pro athlete does. They have the, the, I know he's a little too tall, but still, I just, you watch them swing and you're like, yeah, that's just different. They move different than the regular human being. I go,

Yeah. I golf with Frank Kaminsky last week and he's, you know, close to seven feet and it still doesn't matter. He's just like, yeah, I've been, and I've been throwing myself into it now that I'm, you know, kind of done. And he's just, you can see, like, he will just get leaps and bounds better every single month because they just have that ability.

I, I, I've noticed that it's the dudes that were pro athletes that have to use that hip rotation.

That become the best golfers. Like hockey pitchers are great quarterbacks, kickers.

Those guys that had to use those muscles throughout their lives typically kind of lean right into it in terms of golf.

But it is, it is kind of. All right, let's talk PGA Championship. Can you tell us, give us the, the, like the big view of this course? Because I don't, I'm not familiar with it. What should we expect? What's like kind of the, the thing that we should look to, you know, different courses have different quirks and everything.

It's a question we ask before most majors, which is, what's this course's deal?

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. What's, what's up with it? Yeah. What's this, what's this course?

[Shane Bacon]

Do you, I think this cla. This course is, is like the classy 60 year old woman that maybe had gotten a late divorce and is still going to the gym. You know, still looks great, still might be dating around. This is a golf course that's been around for a long time. Obviously, it's in Philly. By the way, is Max available or no, he's available.

It's a Donald Ross course. Crazy green complexes, big green complexes. There's been a lot of changes done to the golf course over the years. It's tight. It's not overly long. You know, the PGA Championship typically is the longest of the majors. This is not going to be one of the longest. You see, I don't think you have to bomb it off the tee to contend around here, but I do think it's a second shot golf course. A lot like what we talk about with Augusta national, and also just a lot of trouble. 174 bunkers around the golf course, and a lot of them are really deep and gnarly, especially the fairway bunkers. You don't want to hit into those. But basically it's gonna. It's gonna play into what we see at the Masters, what we see around the US Open. A lot of the great iron players I think are gonna have a chance to contend, and then obviously the lag putting. But you think about players that might fit the mold of this place. I mentioned bombers. Obviously, if you hit it far and long, you're gonna be at an advantage anywhere. But I think considering the size of the greens and how good of a putter Bryson is, I think the kind of up and down iron play from Bryson will be actually helped out around a moronomic because you don't have to be totally precise to find the surfaces. Then you just have to two putt.

Are we worried at all that Philadelphia has been disparaged as a sports town this past weekend and now it's kind of like a chip on your shoulder, prove it situation where they gotta show up and they gotta, like, say some real nasty shit to Rory and real nasty shit to. To any of the European guys.

Yeah, I think there'll be Just a lot of New Yorkers there. That seems to be what happens with Philly sporting events. It's just the New Yorkers show up and they kind of take over.

So that's probably what's gonna happen at Ironic. I mean, and that's kind of what I think will be the progression of what we've seen over the last few weeks.

All right, so, so let's talk about the golfers that are playing the best right now. Cam Young has been awesome.

Is. I mean, Scotty's the favorite. Is that fair that Scotty should still be the favorite even though he hasn't. It hasn't. It's unfair for Scotty because the bar that he set for himself last year was so impossibly high. So he hasn't been winning every tournament this year. But he's still. Is there, Is there maybe something with Scotty's game? You're like, oh, he's got to fix this, or something's a little off. Or if he plays his best, no one's got a chance.

[Shane Bacon]

Yeah, it hasn't been as tight, is what I'd say. With Scotty Scheffler, it hasn't been bad, obviously, but it hasn't been as tight. I mean, he's been leading the PGA Tour the last three years in terms of iron play. That's been a little loose this year. There's been times where he's gotten wayward with the driver. Even the putter has gotten a bit cold a couple of weeks ago. Missed a lot of short putts inside of five feet. That's kind of the bad for Scotty, I'd say the good is, you know, despite not winning a lot after that first event of the year, he's finished second in the last three events. And the people he's lost to are the three best golfers in the world not named Scotty Scheffler, Rory, Cam Young, and Matt Fitzpatrick. So you're not getting beat by the 75th ranked golfer in the world. You're getting beat by guys that are having these incredible years. The other thing I think that plays into Scotty's hands is he didn't play this past week. He took the week off. And he's been at Ironic basically since Saturday, playing practice rounds and preparing again. Going back to what the golf course asks. You got to be great with the irons, and it really helps if you're an incredible pitcher when you miss the greens. And those are his best skill sets. So I, I think there's a better chance Scotty wins by 10 that he doesn't finish in the top 10. I think this is a great opportunity for Scotty to kind of go back to back at the pga.

Okay, and what about some names that might be outside that list of the, of the top five that you would look to, to have a chance at a course like this?

[Shane Bacon]

So I got five, best case scenario, wins on the week, if you guys want them.

Yes, absolutely.

Well, I mean, you know, I mean, you. This is a, this is a popular program, fellas. I listen to every show. You know, I love that. So speed is the number one obvious answer. If he wins here, he completes the career Grand Slam. He's only had one chance to really win a PGA championship in his career. That was back in2015. Lost to Jason Day at Whistling Straits. That was back when it was in the end of the season, not where it is now on the schedule. I don't really like him this week. I don't think he's going to win this pga. I kind of like his chances next year. The PGA goes to that new course in Frisco, and I think that plays a little bit more into Jordan Speed skill set. But obviously if Spieth gets attention, if Rory last year was, let's call it a 10 out of 10 on the emotional and everything scale, winning the Masters, I think Spieth getting a PGA wins probably a nine and that's about as high as you're going to get in terms of this field at this golf course. Number two is just the big time winners at this particular major. Continuing. I'll read you the winners basically since 2017. J.T. brooks. Brooks. Colin Morikawa, Phil when he was 50 years old. J.T. brooks again. Xander and Scotty. So I mean these are like the heaviest of hitters in the world.

The PJ of America kind of sets the golf courses up for the best golfers in the world that contend and play well. So obviously no surprise that that's kind of been the run, but pretty incredible. I mean the fact that JT's 1, 2, 2 and Brooks has won three and you had those sprinkled in. All those guys are obviously big time players. My number three is Brooks winning another one. Yeah, I just think getting to four is awesome. I think he's going to be in contention here. I think it's a great Brooks Koepka golf course. He's leading the PGA Tour this season in iron play. I was surprised when I saw that statistically played great on Saturday in Myrtle Beach. I also got to say this about Brooks. He's become one of my favorite professional golfers because he kind of has that no mentality, you know, on the golf course. But I love the fact that he's just kind of down with whatever they ask of him in terms of what he needs to play in or the process he's got to go through. Like the fact that he went and played the European Tour, you know, out of college in the Challenge Tour and went a bit of different path. The fact that he's opened up about the vulnerability of being a pro golfer like Brooks is a little bit deeper, I think than people think he is when they see the mock turtle in the biceps. And I think Brooks is positioning himself to get really a chance to win either this PGA or win at Shinnecock. So he's there. Bryson's on the list. I mean Bryson get a PGA would be. Would be great also like on a run right now at the PGA that's been incredible. Finished T4 and 23, second in in 24 and second last year. So been close. Probably needs to get it done at some point considering where he's at in. In his run. And then the last one is the old guys. We've seen him bucking as of late. Brand Snedeker just won at 45. Justin Rose has won at Ironic in the past and has played great this year. Adam Scott, one of the best iron players this year on the PGA Tour. So those are kind of my best case scenarios. Is an old guy, Bryson Brooks, one of the big names in golf, or Jordan Speed?

What about you? You mentioned that, you know, distance isn't everything on this golf course. What about one guy who would be probably number one in the world if he had that top tier distance? Block.

Yeah. I think Blocky makes the cut. I really do. I think Blocky's gonna make the cut this week. I don't know. If he wins the pga. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what that's gonna look like. But. But I think if he doesn't get off to a brutal start like he did a couple years ago, I think there's an opportunity to block you to shoot a couple over through two rounds to get to the weekend.

Yeah, listen, I. With Blocky, I. I don't think I've ever seen a guy, like, burn through, like, a massive amount of goodwill as fast as he did the last time that he was, like, in the national contest. I got no problem with Blocky. You know, like, he pops up, he wants to play golf. He's like a. You know, it's a fun story, but, yeah, sometimes he needs a guy that's next to him that's like, hey, hey, hey. Maybe we just stop talking for a little bit because everybody loves you, so let's just kind of maybe take that to the bank.

What do you think percentage pft of athletes that need that guy are. Is it like 70?

[Big Cat]

Yeah, it's probably. Maybe higher. Maybe higher.

Although I did like Bryson's interview that he gave last week. I. I don't know if he had a chance to read the one where he's talking about, like, merging back to the PGA and how. How the teams from live Golf are worth $200 million, so they've got that equity as leverage coming back. Do you have any idea? Because we've heard, you know, there has been a blueprint of a plan dating back, I think, like two and a half years, three years almost. Now.

[PFT Commenter]

You got the structure.

[Big Cat]

Yeah, the structure, the plans in place, the outlines there. So what have you heard recently about the former live players that did not take the opportunity to come back in January when it was offered, and now they're thinking about making the jump back to the pga. How do you think that's going to look?

[Shane Bacon]

So I think that they. I think the PGA Tour and Roll app are smart enough to understand the power of superstar. Right. I think that's something golf has leaned heavily into over the last few years. We see it across every sport. Right. I think that's one of the issues right now in terms of the NBA is the superstars are kind of emerging right now after the steps, and LeBrons are kind of fading, and they're still trying to figure out who's going to be the face of this league going forward. I think with golf, Bryson helps whatever Tory's on. John Rom helps whatever Tory's on. And then I think on down the list, you've got guys that I think in theory, would be great to get back to the PGA Tour. So I think some level of. Of if you've won a major the last five years, if you've done X, Y and Z, there's an opportunity to come back. But I haven't heard anything about what that structure is looking like as of now. But I imagine if there's an opportunity or way, if Liv does fold and go away to get Bryson and Rahm specifically back, probably Joaquin Neiman as well. I think Tyrrell Hatton's another name you'd probably want back on the PGA Tour, considering how good he has played over the last couple years. I think just setting some precedent to where those guys could, in theory, get back if they wanted to. I think it's going to be some door that opens.

[PFT Commenter]

What would you say to people like, I don't know, Henry Lockwood, who still think Liv has a chance and is just holding on and, And. And actually watching still?

[Shane Bacon]

Can. Can I ask Hank to name. Is it the Four Aces? Is that what we go with?

As someone who is formerly right handed golfer switching to left handed, that's something that interests me because obviously I can just switch just I have the right handed grip.

Yeah. Did you? Okay. Now let me ask you a question. This is very golf nerdy stuff. Could you, and you might not have an answer to this. Could you feel the bottom of the club easier when you made contact with the ball? Yeah, I find that is what the cross handed chip does the best. I find you return the club to the ball way more consistently than the other way around. Have you ever tried the chip like strong handed one handed before? Because it does the same, it's kind of the same feel. No, but I like the idea of the cross handed. If you're not a great chipper to kind of get that repeatable contact on the back of the ball, you're not going to get cute with those chip shots. Like you're not hitting the flop and doing all sorts of stuff, manipulating the face. But if you're looking for a straightforward back and through chipping motion, I think cross handed is the way to go.

[PFT Commenter]

What's cross handed? How do you do it?

[Hank]

You just use a right handed grip. So it's like basically right hand low.

[Big Cat]

It's like if you were to chip.

[Hank]

Yeah.

[Big Cat]

So you're saying if, like when you're doing the chip with one hand, if that feels natural to you, then going cross handed might be a good move.

[Shane Bacon]

Yeah. Like if you ch. It's so funny if you chip one handed. I mean you, you know these are easy chips, right? PFT. These aren't 30 yard pitch shots. But it's wild how that other hand can sometimes get in the way. And so, like, if I'm struggling with my chip in at times, I'm a lefty. I'll go out and chip just left handed, right. Just to get a feel for the bottom of the club. And you're just trying to kind of return the club to the back of the ball where it started. And then once you start to get that feel back, you can try to get a little bit more into manipulation with, you know, high and low and things like that.

I've got a really dumb question for you. I've been working a lot on my game recently, and I'm feeling good going in this summer for the Internet Invitational. There's a few things I. I need some work on. One would be bunker play. You need to practice that. And then two, maybe the. The biggest problem that I have is just putting in general wide open ended question, how do I read putts? Because I feel like there's something wrong with my eyes. I hank those. Like, usually when I guess which way it's about to break, it'll actually be the opposite.

[Shane Bacon]

So something you could do, I think that's helpful, is find the lowest point on the green.

[Big Cat]

Green.

[Shane Bacon]

And then stand there. So you. I'm assuming you stand behind your ball right when you're reading a putt.

[Hank]

Yep.

[Shane Bacon]

You get behind the ball and you look at it. Go find the lowest point on the green, stand there, and then get a feel for where everything's going to move. And I think that'll help you understand maybe where the breaks come from. And not always the easiest thing if they're flat greens, but if there's undulation involved in it. I think it was definitely a distraction, Masters week for those players. I think there's a level of it being motivating now. I think now it's been a few weeks. You know, John Rahm and Bryson, I think both played well in Virginia. Well enough, I think, to just at least feel like your game is in the right place. I think there's got to be a level of motivation specifically for those two guys. Guys to come in here and play well. I think there's a lot of weight on the shoulders of John. John Rom right now. Just not been playing very good golf at the majors over the last couple years. I think for John Rahm, getting in the mix. He played decent at the PJ last year. Had a chance on the back nine before Scotty went crazy. But I think for John Rom getting here, showing up, playing a solid opening round. Don't have to do anything crazy on Thursday, but don't shoot yourself out of the golf tournament to start. I think there'll be a lot of motivation within those two guys out, maybe outside of everybody else, to just have a good major week.

Playing a lot of golf is my only concern in terms of fatigue. But I like JJ Spun. I also really like Ricky Fowler. I think Ricky Fowler could potentially get a major win finally this week at Aeronomic. Kind of a good golf course forum. Don't have to hit it. 350 off the tee. Has been playing really solid golf. Irons look a lot better. And mainly the putter. I mean, Ricky was, you know, in his prime, was the best putter from inside of 10ft in professional golf. He'd kind of gone away from that when he was Struggling. Going back to this golf course, you're going to hit it in spots where you're just trying to two putt. If Ricky continues to kind of roll in those six, seven, eight, eight foot par putts, I think Ricky has a real chance to get himself a contention. You know, come, let's call it late Saturday into Sunday.

And then our good friend Max Homa, he, after finishing what, ninth at the Masters, hasn't really done a whole lot since then. Is he okay? Is Max all right?

Yeah, yeah, he'll be fine. He'll be fine. I, I, I think again, I mean, I, I think maximum Max, you know, is a great iron player at his core. And again, talking about this golf course being a second shot golf course, I think when you pick out the best iron players in the world, even now, you know, Max is still going to be in your top 20. So, yeah, I think Max is, is a dog. He's going to show up at this level of golf course and, you know, I think a good top 20 bet in terms of what he could do, I think I'd put something on there. I'm sure you get plus money for something like that.

He'll have one week where the irons are great and he putts terrible and the next week he putts great and the irons are terrible. We just haven't seen that level of consistency for four days with Jordan. To put me in a place where I'm thinking he's going to get himself a contention. I'd love to see it, but I don't really believe in him here.

Yeah. What is it about Spieth that he seems like the camera always cuts to him and he's like in the middle of a bush in a part of the golf course that has never been seen before. And then, and then he makes a par somehow. What?

I mean, I think that's why we love Jordan, is because you Know, you can find a player that hits it straight and finds a lot of fairways and has routine rounds of 71, 70. Or you can be on the. The drug roller coaster. That is Jordan Speed that you. I mean, Big Cat, you feel like you're at the sphere, you know, you're like, I don't know what I'm watching here, but I'm not leaving. I can promise you that.
