Yeah. Welcome to part of my take, presented by DraftKings. The crown is yours. Today is Wednesday, January 21, and the Indiana Hoosiers are national champions of the college football world. Let me just say it again because it is still so crazy. The Indiana Hoosiers are national champions of the college football world. PFT it's the craziest story. It's. Well, let's first talk about the game. What a game. We. We. We deserve this. We haven't had a national championship. That was one score. And I think the last one was the two a game.

Yeah.

So it been a long time. It had been blowouts. This game was tight. It looked like Miami was dead in the first half. They come roaring back. You have like big time plays. The back shoulder throw to Charlie Becker over and over was just unguardable. Fernando Mendoza calling his own number with the. With the goal line run. It was awesome.

[Big Cat]

It was a great game. It was an awesome game. You're right. Miami did look dead in the first half. The offense wasn't doing jack. And then the second half came out and Mark Fletcher kind of took over for a little bit. The offensive line started blocking people. And the. The Miami defense also played really well like the defensive line. The first half wasn't exactly a great half for Indiana either. Miami's defensive line was just beating the. Out of him some point sometimes to the point of. We're not sure if that was legal or not.

Yeah.

But they didn't call it. So I guess it is legal that.

Fernando Mendoza might be one of the toughest guy. I'm the biggest Fernando Mendoza guy now because he is just so tough.

And. And the spin zone on that is Fernando Mendoza got to show that he can take a beating. Yeah. Which he will likely have to do as a Las Vegas Raiders quarterback next year.

Y. She was. She looks a little distraught after the game.

She was upset. I actually had an idea last night. You know the show Heed rivalry. Yeah. We're all big fans. They should do one of those shows. But it should be about college football. Super fans like that. Like maybe a Bella Danger and Mike Pence at the game last night together. Like I. It's a Romeo and Juliet type situation.

The full. The full Miami. By the way, the full Miami fan like it. The sideline experience is so funny because you had a Bella Danger. You had Michael Irvin. Who. I still don't know how he got the. Like, I understand how he got the access, but he was coaching the guys.

Yeah.

During the game and then posting the clips. You had Ray Lewis tell Carson Beck before the final drive. I'm gonna fucking kill you if you throw an interception. So we haven't seen Carson Beck since. And then you had one of my favorite pictures. Malachi Tony being consoled by Ed Reed after the game. Ed Reed's wearing the big giant hat.

The funny hat.

Yeah. And he's wearing it backwards just so. Miami.

[Big Cat]

Yeah, it was, it was very Miami. I, I think Michael Irvin's job is just be Michael Irv Irvin. He is the executive vice president of being Michael Irvin.

Yeah.

For the Miami Hurricanes. I, I, It's a situation where you have Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin. They want to be on the sidelines. And I simply don't think that Miami has enough coaches and security personnel to keep them off the sideline.

[Adam Thielen]

Correct.

[PFT Commenter]

These are just to invite them in all the way.

[Big Cat]

Sure. We'd rather keep them close than have them do things in the shadows behind their backs. I thought that, yeah. In the second half, Miami got the ground game going. Fletcher is awesome. I've loved watching Fletcher this entire year. He's going to be back next year and I think the Hurricanes are going to have another great team.

[PFT Commenter]

And Malachi Tony, he, Malachi Tony is so electric to watch because you can watch a game where Malachi Tony's, you know, in the game. And you could see Indiana was very, very focused. And Indiana was so good defensively. They don't make a lot of mistakes. They were so focused on any time Malachi Tony touched the ball. They had guys there right away. And the defensive coordinator afterwards said, you can't stop him. You're just hoping that you have people there to tackle him right away. And you just know he's one of those guys. When you're watching him play, you're like, he's going to break one eventually. He's going to do something eventually. And then he did. He scored a touchdown. But my by Indiana's resolved special teams, that punt, you know, the punt block, that was play the game. And then Fernando Mendoza, keeper. Indiana was just the going for it there, too.

Yeah, I like to, I like to call to go for it.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Big Cat]

The, the balls on Signetti go quarterback draw. They hadn't run Mendoza really all night. And to have him do that, that play when I watched, because there's so many different parts of what Mendoza does on that 4th and 5 that it was like the Vince McMahon meme in real life where he's just progressively getting more and more excited watching something. It's like, oh, the juke. That's nice. Oh, the spin. The truck stick. That's nice. Y the spin move. Oh, my God. And then the dive into the end zone. It was like just an incredible sequence for Mendoza and it was a play that will make you. Even if you're not an Indiana, if you're an Indiana fan, that is. That is the best thing that you've ever seen in your entire life.

Yep.

And you probably won't bar and every Indiana bar, like, yeah, yeah. Hung as big and framed as you could possibly get it.

[Big Cat]

It's going to be. It's going to be seared into your brain forever. And it's very rare that you get that type of moment if you're a fan of a team. And even as somebody who's not a fan of Indiana watching that, I'm never going to forget watching that play.

Oh, yeah.

It was so incredible to see.

[PFT Commenter]

It was so incredible. And then. And then Miami had a shot at the end, which I, you know, Carson Beck, Miami had a great season. Carson Beck, their three losses and, you know, I think Carson Beck's one of those guys that I. We've seen a lot of him in college football. We don't know what's going to be make of him in NFL. I think he's an okay quarterback, but not, you know, he's been in these. He's an okay quarterback, a national champion. He's an okay quarterback. I.

There's a stat. Do you see the stat?

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah, he, he. The three losses for Miami this year.

[Hank]

I think it's. I think like he has six losses in his college career. Four of them came on an interception when they had a chance to win the game.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. So he lost by 3 to SMU this year.

[Big Cat]

Stats Guy.

[PFT Commenter]

Interception in overtime, lost by 3 to Louisville, interception to end it. Lost by 6 to Indiana, interception to end it. It was you and I, actually. It's crazy it sounds. Because I think there was some people who were debating Signetti's call to then kick a field goal at the end of the game to go up 6 instead of trying to end the game right there. I had no problem with it because you're basically saying Carson Beck has to go the entire length of the field. And I don't know if he can and he couldn't.

I had no problem with it because Signetti made the call. And Signetti's always right. I think at this point we have to all agree that Signetti, whatever he does for the rest of his career, whatever moves he makes in game, in the portal, in recruiting, you name it, he's right. He's just right about everything.

[PFT Commenter]

He's right about everything.

Just accept that fact now or else you can just fight about it and be mad at yourself later. I saw a crazy stat. Hank, you'll, you'll appreciate this since you're a stats guy now. Indiana didn't lose a single fumble over its last 15 games. 15 game streak. No fumbles lost. That's 1047 plays that they ran.

I'm just kidding.

Oh yeah, they, they, they, they lost a fumble in the, in the first game.

So since 2004, there hasn't been a single team that's gone 12 or more consecutive games without losing. Indiana did for 15 games again, 1047 plays, no lost fumbles. That's pretty incredible right there.

[PFT Commenter]

It's, it's. The whole thing is just nuts. It, it defies logic. I think that we, we aren't talking enough. I know that people, you know, there's been a lot of talk about, hey, Indiana. This is the craziest story in sports. Definitely the craziest story in college football. But I, we're not even saying it enough. Like it's, it's, it's so mind boggling.

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

That Kurt Signetti was able to do this in two years. The only analogies that I could come up with took a lot longer and they were Bobby Bowden at fsu. Because Florida State, before Bobby Bowden showed up, was actually going to get rid of their football program. They were a women's college for a long time. He, he basically made that program as Bobby Bowden. And the other one would be Jim Calhoun at Connecticut. They were under.500 for their entire history. He comes again though. It takes over a decade. Yeah. Wins multiple national championships. Kurt Signetti did. Those two guys would be the closest analogies. Kurt Signetti did it in two years.

Well, Brad Stevens a Butler.

[PFT Commenter]

Brad Stevens. Butler's a pretty good one. Yeah. But he didn't win it all. No. Right. Jim Calhoun and Bobby Bowden won it all.

Here's just, here's just so we could talk about big picture. How crazy is. But this just in this season, because this is, this is what I think. Indiana was so dominant at the end of the year that it was a kind of a foregone conclusion they were going to win it all.

[Big Cat]

It's kind of funny. It was like the. Will the, the plucky underdogs from Miami be able to take down the juggernauts from Indiana? Right.

[PFT Commenter]

But before the season, they were 151 to 150 to 1 to win the College Football Playoff. They obviously had a great year last year, but they played two big time teams in Notre Dame and Ohio State and weren't very competitive. So everyone had their doubts. They're a really good team, but they can't win it all. So 150 to 1, if you were looking at similar odds right now, and this is to put it in perspective, it'd be the Marlins to win this upcoming World Series. It'd be Nick Bonito to win the super bowl mvp. Oh, it would be the Suns to win the NBA Finals.

[Big Cat]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

Ghana to win the World Cup.

[Big Cat]

Well, they're going to beat the US in the knockout state.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. And Utah State to win March Madness.

[Big Cat]

I mean, Nick Bonito sounds like that's.

[PFT Commenter]

A tasty one, but it's crazy. And, and Indiana has been playing football since 1899. Indiana has six total bowl victories in the history of their program, and half of those have come in the last 19 days. They won a bowl in 1979, they won a bowl game in 1988, they won a bowl game in 1991. And then since January 1st, they've won three more. It's nuts. They were the. Losing his school in history in college football. And Kurt Signetti showed up and he just did it.

[Big Cat]

Yeah. I mean, a lot of credit to Signetti. I also think Mendoza, what he did in his playoffs was, was incredible. Absolutely nuts. Like he, he was by far, he was the best player you can make arguments about, you know, Malachi, Tony, obviously when he had the ball in his hands. That guy is hard to tackle. But what Mendoza did for the, for the Indiana Hoosiers is far and away the most impressive performance, I think. And he's, he's every bit deserving of the Heisman Trophy.

[PFT Commenter]

Yep.

[Big Cat]

He showed that. You know, we, we got to see. There was some, some debate beforehand about who should win. Some called it a lackluster year in terms of stats and all that. But what he did in the playoffs and especially what he did on that fourth and five, that is just, it's a moment. It's a moment of college football that we're going to remember for the rest of our lives. And I think to the Signetti factor in all this, I think it's the best thing to ever happen to college football. And I also think it's the meanest thing.

To ever happen.

I agree with all of that because.

The expectations now could not be higher for the no offense, the Arizona's and the Marylands of the world, I mean.

[PFT Commenter]

It'S, you can go even a little higher than that. I'm watching this and saying I've, I've. For my, you know, since I went to college. I said I love watching University of Wisconsin play football. I'm very happy when they win 10 games, when they go to a Rose bowl, all these things. I understood where the University of Wisconsin was, was in the pecking order. And the fact that a college football playoff berth is there. Winning a national title is probably never going to happen because you don't win a national title unless you have an inordinate amount of five star and four star recruits. And what Indiana did is said everyone can win a national title, but actually not really because you don't have Kurt Signetti.

And it was kind of nice when, when you had the Nick Sabins of the world running the show and every other fan base was kind of kept in line by that. Yeah. And they're like, yeah, well we're not, we're not Alabama, we're not Georgia, we're not Ohio State. We really don't have a chance to do anything.

And then all of a sudden the nil, which interestingly enough it doesn't, it doesn't sound like Indiana. I don't think all the figures are public. But Signetti implied after the fact that their nil budget was not what people thought that it was.

It was, it was still significant. It wasn't, it wasn't like they just went and bought. It wasn't maybe what a Texas Tech did this this year.

So. But it was still significant. So you can't say that they didn't have very strong alumni support.

Yeah, the, the, the largest living alumni base in the United States is what they always throw in living in there.

Yeah. So this was. Indiana obviously went 16 0. First time it's been done since Yale in 19 or excuse me, 18. 1894. Yale went 16 and oh as well.

That's a long time. And but you back to your point, it is kind of mean because there is a small sliver of hope for basically every team in college football right now where like if Indiana can do it literally again, just to reiterate the losing his program in the history of college football, until Kurt Signetti showed up, they had never won 10 games. And then he does it back to back years and wins a national title. Everyone can say hey, we have a Shot. But you really don't, because, like I said, Kurt Signetti might be a one of one type of guy.

He might be one of one. And last night, I want to know how many drinks Mark Cuban had with Kurt Signetti. Because if Signetti was smart and who knows how long he's going to stick around a coach, it would be very. It'd be hilarious if he just retired right now and then made everybody, like, ask him to come back every single year.

He alluded to it. He said he needed the money.

He's like, going to be the greatest story ever if I retire. But I need the money.

But what he should have done last night is talk to Mark Cuban, who was at the game, cornered him, had like 12 to 20 drinks with him, and just made Cuban open up the biggest checkbook of all time and fund the nil in. In perpetuity for the next, like, 20 years. He's like, yeah, okay, I'll put me down for 50 mil a year. Because Mark Cuban in that instance, was so happy, probably so drunk, and one of the richest people in the entire country, you could. You could just keep this train rolling for forever.

At that point, I want to know how much Mark Cuban gave to this team, because I feel. Listen, we like Mark Cuban, but I feel like he might. I feel like he might not have given all that much this year.

Yeah. Yeah. I'm saying, like, he's just getting richest guy. Everyone's like, well, they have Mark Cuban.

I'd like to know. But here's the thing with the nil stuff. It doesn't matter if you don't get the right guys. That's what Kurt Signetti has done at an elite level is his talent evaluation is so far ahead of everyone.

That you could have $50 million. That doesn't mean you're going to win a national title if you pick the wrong guys, if you pick the pieces that don't fit together.

So that's where Kurt Signetti has done an incredible job. And just so. So to put it in perspective, because this now is the list, and it's pretty crazy. Kurt Signetti at Indiana in the two years. So this is all the accomplishments they've done in two years. Two years. First 10 win season in program history. First 11 win season in program history. First 12 win season in program history. First 13 win season. 14 win season. 15 winning season. 16 win season all in program history. First undefeated season in program history. First top five matchup in programs history. First win over the number one team in program history. First time being the number one team in program history. First Heisman in the program history. First time beating Ohio State in 37 years. First time winning the conference outright in 80 years. First playoff appearance in program history. First playoff win in program history. First bowl win in 35 years. First rose bowl win in program history. First time beating Alabama in program history. First Peach bowl win in program history. 272 record in that time span. Best in the country. And those two losses were the two teams that played for last year's national championship. And then, of course, first national championship in program history. The first ever or the first, first ever champion since 1996. Florida. It's insane. That's all the things he did in the last 18 months.

It's an insane. Like, he's just. He just keeps stacking it up. It's basically like playing college football on. On freshman mode and just getting your war chest just every time it pops up. Oh, you got another trophy up, you got another trophy up. You got another trophy.

It's also so mean. It's also so mean for everybody else. It's like, we just need. We need our Kurt Signetti.

And one of my favorite Kirk Signetti subplots that happened was his daughter's tweet from 2019 after he won with JMU went Reviral, where she said, wins first D1 playoff game score 66 points, improves the 12 and 1. And it's a text that he sent. She sent to her dad saying, are you happy? And he said, no.

And then she updated it today after winning the national title and said, this has gone re. Viral. The tweet of mine from 2019 has resurfaced randomly. Everyone is wondering if you're happy now. So are you happy? And he said, yes. Yeah, he finally did it. He finally smiled. He.

He achieved happiness.

He smiled several times. Maybe not. He didn't smile during that punt block.

They recover. Like the most surprising play of the game, maybe the biggest swing of the game. Kamara blocked the punt, recovered in the end zone. Miami goes up or Indiana goes up. Two scores at that point.

And he wasn't even surprised. He wasn't phased by that. But he did smile last night. He smiled a lot. He was very happy. The JMU angle of it for me, because a lot of people are like, oh, you must not be that happy for Kurt Signetti because he left you now He's Kurt Signetti as we all know him. My, my honest feelings watching it are I'm so happy for the guy. I'm really happy for the guy. And it was a small part of it. Maybe it just stood out to me after the game. But the guys were, they were crowded around the championship trophy and when they touched it for the first time, it was five JMU players that touched it and the five guys that, that contributed a lot to this Indiana team. Same five memes. Put that down. Same five year might be the Indiana guys from jmu. It was very cool to see that Fisher, Surat, Ponds, Black and Kamara and Signetti playing such a big part.

In such an incredible story.

And you got a shout out after the game from the offensive line being like, hey, last year, culture wise, Signetti shows up with a bunch of JMU guys and Katic made it a point that we got to make sure we have a cohesive locker room and you know, a mash of a bunch of people. And he got, you know, guys were shouting him out last night being like, hey, you. You built a lot of this culture of two teams kind of coming together and achieving this goal. It's a very cool moment for him.

I was watching the pregame. And everyone besides McAfee picked Miami, including Nick Saban, who didn't only just pick Miami, but he put on the hat. And I know Nick Saban is Mario Cristobal. They have a relationship, too. But Kurt Signetti was the recruiting director and wide receiver coach for Nick Saban when he first got to Alabama in 2007 for the. He was there for three years. And I was like, huh, that's weird. He doesn't really talk about Signetti. You don't see a lot of, like, Signetti, Saban talk. It seems a little forced. Why is that? What's going on here? So I went and did some digging and this was someone else's theory. I have two, actually. Two theories, but this is someone else's theory. Is there a chance that Nick Saban knew back in 2007 that Kurt Signetti was a one of one type of coach and specifically did not promote him to OC because he didn't want him to become the best college football coach in America?

I always thought that they were so, so much alike that they might not have gotten along well.

So how it went was Nick Saban hires him. He does a great job as wide receivers coach and recruiting director, finding great talent. I think Julio Jones was part of it, like a lot of great players. And Nick Saban then hires. I think. I can't remember. I think it was Major Applewhite or someone. And then Jim McIlwain for OC and Kurt Signetti basically said, this guy's never going to promote me to oc, So I have to go start from the bottom in D2 and work my way up. Did Nick Saban specifically not promote Kurt Signetti? Because he's like, hey, if this guy gets a head coaching job, he's going to be known as the greatest head coach of all time. Not me. Because winning a national championship Indiana is like probably worth four at Alabama.

So if he wins one more, he already has passed.

Nick Saban almost doubled him. If he wins one more, also the.

Minor one, people will say, Kurt Signetti. Signetti, Nick Saban coaching tree. It's actually reverse because Nick Saban was on Frank Signetti's staff at West Virginia, Kurt's dad. So Nick Saban is in the Signetti coaching tree. So Nick Saban's Been trying to keep the world from Kurt Signetti for all these years and finally he's popped off. That's why he put on the Miami hat. I think he was rooting for Miami because he didn't want. He didn't want the world to know that he had tried to stop. He basically was like, hey, I'm not going to give this guy OC job. He's. By the time he gets to the Division 1 and gets to a power forward program, he's going to be in his 60s, which is what happened. How could he possibly catch all my records by the time he's in his 60s? Just something to think about. That's his, that's his brother. Frank Signetti. Jr's his brother.

If you senior was a coach at West Virginia when Nick Saban was a DB's coach in 1978. 79. So he is. Nick Saban is part of the Signetti coaching trade.

Yeah. It's interesting because I hadn't really thought about why he didn't promote him. I always thought it was because they were so much alike that they must not get along.

No, I think there was. I, I've talked to, I've, I've at least not fact checked, but talked to some people who are in the know of like how, how all these dynamics work. And Nick Saban was. And you can't really fault Nick Saban for this. He was, he was more into hiring younger OCs.

Kurt Signetti was already in his 50s when he was at Alabama, but he quickly realized, hey, I'm doing a really good job and I'm not getting the OC job. I got to get out of here.

And then he bet on himself. So you kept him from us for a long time, Nick Saban. But now he's here and if he wins three national titles at Alabama, I would. You'd have to start making the argument he's the best college coach of all time.

What if he goes and wins a Super bowl too with the Dolphins or the Steelers.

So that was the other thing in talking to some of some, some sources, let's say, I guess all these guys. This is such a racket. The college, the College football world and the coaching world, all these guys have contracts where they have clauses that are linked to each other.

So if Lane Kiffin gets a raise, Kurt Signetti gets a raise.

Yeah. Based on his performance as a coach.

No, but there's also specific ones. Like, if this specific guy gets a raise, I get a raise.

So they all just keep getting raises on top of each other.

The great irony about Signetti is that, yeah, he does seem like the grumpiest old man coach of all time, and I'm sure that he is. But then when he does the sideline interviews, he's like. He snaps out of it.

And he becomes, like, uncharacteristically warm and. And open to answering questions thoughtfully and truthfully.

And then he gets back into grumpy old coach mode. Mode. Maybe he just likes Holly Row a lot. I don't know.

Maybe he. She reminds him of a sister or something. But he just, like, he. He flips it on and off. And he's definitely an awesome football mind, obviously a great motivator. He's the best coach in college football.

And I think it's that talent recruiting, too, that's just. That doesn't get talked about enough with him where he's just finding talent, finding talent.

And it's not. Obviously every team tries to find talent, overlooked guys, and it's really hard to do. If you look at the history of college football, the teams that win, they have the most five star recruits. And the guys that aren't five star, guess what? They've got like, they're going too deep on four stars and three stars. And the depth that they have is incredible. He is finding great players that will buy in to what he's doing and then taking them along for the ride and winning with it. And it's. It's absolutely incredible. I'm very happy for. For Hoosier fans out there. Yeah.

And then he went back and forth four times and he's like, fine. That was a test. You passed.

I like, I like, I didn't have any problem with Mark Fletcher doing that. Yeah. Because he was also the first guy to congratulate Mendoza and it didn't seem like he was just mad at Indiana. I think something might have been, Something.

Okay, we have some coach hirings we already talked about. Oh, no, actually, technically we. Sean McDermott was fired in between shows, but credit to us, we essentially said that had to happen. So I'm actually. Because that will happen to us every now and then with our opinions not always being spot on, where there's an alternate world where we could have done an entire show on Sunday and said, you got to keep Sean McDermott and then he gets fired two seconds later. We kind of expected this to happen. I think a lot of people expected this to happen. Brandon being promoted, they're going to now find this now becomes, in my mind, the number one job. Yeah, it's the number one job open.

McDermott was a great coach for the moment that he needed to be there in terms of like, getting the Bills to the playoffs, stabilizing the franchise a little bit. He's a good defensive coach, I think, but it was time. It was just time. And if they can get somebody in there. I don't want to say like a Jon Gruden, but like a Jon Gruden to be a hard ass, to give him a little bit of edge because, like, McDermott never had any edge to him.

Well, and the, the defense, you know, failed them at times because that's the thing is Josh, we. We said it. Josh Allen didn't play great on Sunday in Denver. He did. That game was a winnable game. He had too many turnovers. But if you look at the Bills in the Sean McDermott, Josh Allen playoff history, they. Josh Allen gets them to 30 points like every time.

And their defense is just so. I as crazy it sounds. I don't think it's the worst to get an incredible defensive coach knowing that Josh Allen can just do it.

I mean, if you look at their history of playoff losses. Yeah, you're right. For the most part, it's the. The most recent one stood out because, yeah, Josh fucked a few things up. But yeah, if you have a defense that's marginally better, that it gives you a big advantage in the playoffs.

And that was what Sean McDermott was supposed to be. That. That's his M.O. is he's a defensive coach.

Yeah. So in the Bills losses, this is the points they scored in the Bills playoff losses in the last six years, they scored 30 points on Saturday, they scored 29 points. Last year, they scored 24 points. The low one is 10 when they got killed by the Bengals. So that was bad offense. They scored 36 in the OT game to the Chiefs and they scored 24. So they've scored points. They just haven't been able to stop the other team in these big moments. And I think that's part of why the change is happening.

Yeah, Yeah, I would agree. And it's happened over and over and over again, and it was. It was the right time to do it. I don't think he's a bad coach. I think he's actually a good coach, but wouldn't have worked out moving forward.

Whatever two weeks ago when we were talking about the coaching carousel, since then, the Ravens fired John Harbaugh, the Mike Tomlin left the Steelers, and now Sean McDermott has been fired by the Bills. So it went from 7 to 10. And it also went, weirdly, to a point where we thought it was going to be a coaching carousel, where there weren't a Lot of great candidates, but now Sean McDermott's in the can. You know, John Harbaugh became a candidate like Sean McDermott maybe, maybe like the Cardinals, a place where he can kind of. He remember he went to Buffalo. There wasn't a lot there.

They were bad and he did make them good. It just, they hit the wall. So maybe going to a team that feels lost, he could put it back together a little. Right.

Okay, we now welcome on a very, very, very special guest recurring guest. It is Adam Thielen. He has retired from the NFL after 13 incredible, incredible career in the NFL. 13 years. Adam, thanks for joining us. Let's start right from that. What, what has it felt like a week into retirement? Have you, have you let yourself go yet? I feel like if I were to retire after 13 years in the NFL, I would get so fat so fast. I assume you're not doing that, but what has it been like? Is it weird just being like, I'm retired, I'm done, I'm not going to train anymore?

[Adam Thielen]

Yeah, I think, I think the biggest thing is right now it doesn't feel too much different for me because usually this is the week that I kind of relax, you know, kind of let myself eat whatever I want to eat and then get back into training. So I think it'll be a little bit different, especially when guys start going back to OTAs and I'm not doing that. It's probably when it'll really set in. But I did, I did play old man pick up basketball this morning and I haven't done that in a long time because I didn't want to risk injury. So I was excited to kind of get back out there and. And stay in shape.

[PFT Commenter]

Wait, so tell us how it went. Like, how was your game? Was it. Was it weird being out there for the first time in a long time because I assume you're an awesome basketball player?

[Adam Thielen]

It was. It was really weird, but it was so fun. I've been waiting for this to happen for a long time because I love basketball. I used to play when I was a young player. We had a bunch of guys on the team that would play. So in the offseason, we play a lot of basketball, but as soon as I signed my, like, first real contract, I was like, yeah, I don't think it's worth the risk of them not paying off my contract if I get hurt playing basketball. And, you know, you hear this stories all the time with guys getting hurt playing old man basketball, so. But all that to say it was. It felt great. I'm a little rusty and I'm definitely out of basketball shape, but it was. But it was a lot of fun.

[Big Cat]

Have you thought about how much golf you're going to play in late July, all throughout August this year going into September? Have you. Have you even, like, started to comprehend how much golf you're going to be able to play for the first time during the summertime?

[Adam Thielen]

I can't wait. You could just fast forward me to that right now and I would be. I would be very happy. Unfortunately, it's negative. What is it negative 8 degrees outside here in Minnesota right now, so. Yeah, but I've been grinding in the simulator. I knew what I was doing. I was. I smartly put a golf simulator in my house a long time ago. So retirement life will be. Treat me well in there. Getting ready. I already have a tournament next week. I'm going to be grinding for and. And then hopefully make a good appearance in Tahoe this year. We'll see.

I was going to say, not to bring up bad memories, but you kind of blew it in Tahoe this past year. I think you were like, what, tied for? You were in top five going in the final round. You finished 11th. I'm not. Listen, you're a really good golfer, but you blew it. Can we. Can we maybe get a little focus on finishing strong?

[Adam Thielen]

That's the last two years for me. I've been. I've been. I think two years ago I was in, like, third. I was in first after day one and then end up like, yeah, ninth or something. So I've blown it on Sunday. Sunday has been brutal for me. Can't make any putts, I lose my game somehow. But. But again, this is. Now that's my job. Like before, I had to, like, train. Like, you know, you go back to OTAs, and I wouldn't play golf for a month and a half, probably just because you're. You're busy again. And then on the weekends, you got kids stuff, so I didn't play a lot of golf. And then. And then I was a little rusty going to Tahoe, but that's. That will not be the case this year.

[Big Cat]

Yeah, you had kind of a wild last season in the NFL, obviously, going back to the Vikings and then. And then going over to Pittsburgh to wrap the year up. And the way things ended in Pittsburgh, that was. That was a crazy team that you played for. Like, the Pittsburgh Steelers were. I don't want to say chaotic, but they were. They were a very fun team with the energy they brought, especially towards the end of the season. What was it like? What was it like getting to play with Aaron Rodgers and. And those guys?

[Adam Thielen]

Yeah, I mean, such a blessing, like you said. It was definitely a wild ride this year. Crazy. I mean, someone just asked me today, like, when you going on vacation? I'm like, I need to just be at home. It's been a crazy year. Just moved twice. Family traveling back and forth for games. But yeah, Pittsburgh was such a blessing. Coach T. To be able to spend a few weeks with a legend like that and just to kind of see how, you know, you see from afar. Obviously have a lot of respect for him from afar, but when you get in the room and just see how he operates, just his attention to detail, the way that he conducts team meetings and just kind of brings together the team and is that true. Leader was such a blessing to see and really cool. And I really picked up a lot of things from a leadership perspective. And then same thing with Aaron, right. I've known Aaron a long time, played against him forever. Saw him from. From the other side of the field, but never, like, really saw his process and how. How he does things. And those are the things that people don't see that when you see, you're like, that's why he's been so successful. That's why he's one of the best quarterbacks of all time. It's not just because he can throw the ball really well. It's his process. And it was really cool to see that. I mean, he has almost a whole system outside of the system that he's just carried with him throughout his whole career. So that was really cool to see and how he kind of operates that, how he prepares guys and tests guys. I probably had never been so stressed ever in my life in practice because you just never know he's going to throw at you to, to try to see, you know, what you know and, and how well you know it. So you could be on the same page on Sundays. But it was really cool to see that.

[PFT Commenter]

Do you think Aaron Rodgers retires because it feels like he has something left? I don't know if you, you know, you know, playing with him in those last, you know, month and a half with Pittsburgh, would you agree that like his arm is still there, his processing is still there? Maybe his athleticism has waned a little bit. Who doesn't after 40? Do you think that he, if he wants to play, do you think he can still be a high level quarterback in the NFL?

[Adam Thielen]

Yeah, I mean, I think, I think my wife hopes he retires because if he doesn't, I might come out of retirement.

[PFT Commenter]

Oh, I like that. Breaking news.

[Adam Thielen]

But he, he's, I mean, he can still do it for sure. I think, I think for him it's going to come down to, I would imagine, I want to speak for him, but it'll come down to just whether he wants to or not. Right. I think he can definitely do it. Being around him, just seeing how he again, how he operated, how he practiced. I mean the guy, the guy is, you know, been playing for 20 some years and still every day of practice like treating it, that's like it's a game and not missing practices. You know, he missed a few for, you know, to heal up his wrist, but other than that, I mean he's out there begging coach to do a two minute drill to get extra reps in that and, and just the way he practices was, was really cool to see. And again, that's why the, that's why these guys have success. They don't have success because they're crazy talented. They, they pair the talent with the hard work and preparation. Right. Like I've, I remember one of my best friends in high school, his dad always said like preparation is the key to success. And then you hear that and you're like, yeah, yeah. And then you like get to this level and you see why guys are, are great. Not good, but great. It's, it's that preparation and it was fun to see.

And with playing with Tomlin, I'm sure you got to see this up close for the first time and maybe you can explain to us what is the standard the standard.

[Adam Thielen]

I mean, I don't know exactly what.

You weren't there long enough.

It's good that you retired.

It's. It's very clear. What was that last meeting like? We. We saw the reports. It sounded very emotional. Was it as shocking? Obviously you hadn't been there as long as some of these guys that were a little more emotional. But was it shocking when Mike Tomlin walked into that meeting and was like, hey, I'm done, guys?

[Adam Thielen]

It was because he didn't, he didn't start with that. Like, he, he didn't preface it in any way. Like it was just like a normal, like, Mike T. Meeting. Like, hey, like it wasn't good enough, you know, like, I appreciate your effort. Like all these things. I don't know exactly what he said, but. But it was kind of like his normal, like, after game meeting, whether you win or lose, like, just talking about, you know, his appreciation for the effort and things like that. And then it was kind of. The last thing was like, and by the way, you know, like, you know, I'm gonna step down, you know, and it was. I think it was most emotional because the way he said it was, was like he wasn't good enough, you know, like he didn't do a good enough job. And. And he feel. He felt like he's letting guys down. And. And that's when it gets emotional because you're like, no, no, I didn't do enough.

[PFT Commenter]

Right?

[Adam Thielen]

Like, you did your job. I need to do my job better. And I think that's where it got. Got emotional. Whether you were a coach or a player, you kind of like, like, man, like, if I would have done a better job like this probably wouldn't be happening. So, you know, tough to see a guy like that again, a legendary. The way he carries himself, the way he leads. I think coaches and players all just had so much respect for him till the very last day, you know, it's not like he just like, cash it in the last few weeks or cash in good knowing that he was maybe going to step down or take a year off. He was. He was all in. And you felt that Every day that, you know, you had a team meeting every day and you felt it.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. So. So was there. Do you feel like it was. Maybe locker room code was broken? The fact that we found out so much about this meeting, like, we had tears. We had some I'm sorrys. Like, that was kind of weird that we found out. Unless you were the mole. Maybe I messed with the wrong guy.

[Adam Thielen]

Well, I feel like. Well, first of all, I don't know what's true and what's not true nowadays. Like, on the Internet, you just feel like I'm like, I don't know if that's actually been leaked or if people, like, made that up. Like, I really. I really don't. But, yeah, I mean, I think that's. That's kind of interesting. I mean, like, who's. Who's going to a media outlet right away and being like, yeah, everyone was. Was crying and hugging and so I'm not sure if that was, like, actually a real report or if that was just kind of like the fake ones. That was, you know, semi accurate, I guess. And again, like, there's a lot of different points of view. Right. Some guys maybe stayed after. I'm not. I'm not sure. Like, I didn't necessarily see a lot of that. So it is interesting. Nowadays, you just don't know what to believe.

[PFT Commenter]

All right, so let's do some accurate reporting. Did you cry?

[Adam Thielen]

I did not cry. I'm not really a crier.

But. And again, I wasn't there for very long, but I did. I did give him a hug. I told him how much I appreciated him. I mean, we had some amazing conversations and just some really cool moments over the, what, five, six weeks I was there and. And really felt like I actually knew him a lot better than I did in the short amount of time we were together. So a lot of respect for him, and I was able to talk to him after. So that was. That was pretty cool.

How long was the hug?

[Adam Thielen]

Oh, it was quick because there was, like, 5, 000 people behind me trying to get a hug.

And I had kind of an awkward, like, post hug. Kind of ran into a few guys, and then it was, like, in the middle of two hugs. So that was a little awkward. But.

Well, thankfully, no. There was, there was a line of people, like, going to get hugged, so I didn't have to do that awkward walk together after you already said goodbye. I'm actually horrible with goodbyes.

And actually really dislike them. So usually I'm the one that's like the. What is it? The Irish goodbye? Is that what they call leave without saying goodbye? That's usually me. So, I mean, I, I don't know if we're reading into this a little bit too much, but you did just kind of leave the door open when you're like, if Aaron comes back, maybe, you know, I'll, I'll think about it too. Like, have you had regrets since retiring, what, four days ago? Have you had second thoughts about it?

[Adam Thielen]

No, I, I, I'm really content with, with it, you know, honestly, just, Just wore out. I feel like I've given everything I've had for so long and just have never wavered from that. Like, I feel like I, I knew there was only one way to do it. And every day, just give full effort, attention, detail, and, you know, just doing that for 13 years, I'm, I'm pretty, pretty exhausted of that. I'm so excited for, like you guys said, some fall golf and, and summer golf, extended summer golf. But most importantly, to be able to coach my boys, my kids, and just be around for their sporting events and, and Things like that. But yeah, I think it'll be tough. Like let's say it's, let's say it's end of October, November and, and a team calls and has a need at receiver. That's going to be a tough, tough one. But I also, like, I also have been so all in for so long that yeah, I've taken my off season training so seriously, like, I'm not going to do that. So I just don't think that at that point I would feel good about playing and playing at a high level and feeling good about that. So I'll never say never, but I feel really good about, about where I'm at.

[PFT Commenter]

All right, that's good. Keep the door open. All right, so we, I had another question about a player you played with. We're members of Bryces, so we like Bryce Young. We think that he's, he's been great in the last like couple years. Really? What is it about him? You played with him a couple years there. He feels like it coincided with him kind of finding his way and, you know, getting the playoffs this year. Are you, are you a member of Bryces? Are you going to join us? Do you think he's got a good future in the NFL?

[Adam Thielen]

I'm a full fledged member of that. I'm a huge fan of him. I sent him several text messages, you know, talked to him a few times on the phone this, this season, just how proud I was of him. And I saw it coming and honestly, which made it so hard to leave there because that was the whole reason why I was going to be done last year and the whole reason why I came back. And I think I said this a few times in the media, but it was like the whole reason I came back was number one, Bryce and number two, the leadership of the organization, just where they were at and where they were heading. And I felt really confident in that. And I never thought I was gonna leave and never had any thing in the back of my mind at all that I was going to leave and go somewhere else. So yeah, that was obviously tough. But so much respect for Bryce, just his, his way that he's handled adversity through his career. I mean, I was in that, in that room, in that building through some really tough times for him personally and just for the organization and for the team, you know, firing a coach halfway through his rookie year, kind of a mess on offense just with a lot of things going on, you know, coaching kind of craziness, the coaches kind of battling each other within, in the offensive room, especially. And then. And then, you know, just the next year, not having a lot of wins, him getting benched, him coming back and playing great at the end of the year, like, there's so many things that I'm just, like, so proud of him because especially at quarterback. Right. Like, the media kills these guys. You know, they kill them. And we all get. We all get. You know, we all get our fair share, but quarterbacks, a whole different level, especially when you're not winning as a team. And. And so he. He took a lot of. A lot of wrath and, you know, always good to see that good people, you know, good things happen to them. And he's one of those guys.

Yeah.

In addition to. To being supporters of Bryce's, we also. I speak for myself. I'm a member of nine tifa, so there's a difference, I think, between JJ and nine. And in your experience, limited experience playing with him in Minnesota. Could you tell when it was J.J. in the locker room and when it was 9?

[Adam Thielen]

I could, yeah, for sure.

[Big Cat]

What's the difference?

[PFT Commenter]

Like, yeah, tell us what it looked like.

[Adam Thielen]

First of all, I love that guy. And. And I got to see him in the off season. You know, when I was a Panther, I was in the off seasons. He was here in the summer. I needed a quarterback throw to and had fantastic throwing sessions with him, and. And it really started to build respect for him and just his talent, his. His love for the game. But, yeah, I think he's got. He's got. And he takes a lot of heat for that, like, saying that. But, like, I feel like all of us as athletes have that. Like. Like when I'm. When I'm on the field, I'm a different person. I'm not. I'm not Adam. Like, I'm not my. My son's dad. Like. Like how I treat them every day. Like, when I'm on the field, like, I'm a different person. Like, an attitude comes, like a. A mindset. And so, like, I understand where he's coming from. Like, he. He's a different person on game day, which he should be. Like, that's. That's part of the thing. And that's what makes a lot of these guys great when they. When they step across the line, like, they're different. And. And that's what I really, honestly, when I first started throwing with JJ and getting to know him, that's what I loved about him. I saw that, like, I saw this, like, intensity when, like, he started playing and, and stepping across the line. Like, this intensity and like this, this competitiveness, and those are like, all right, this guy's going to have success in the league.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. Yeah. All right, so another one. We actually gave out this award. We're. We're big on the awards. On this show, we have a fullback award we give to the best college football fullback, and we gave teammate of the year award to Justin Jefferson. Do you think that's a fair award that we gave out? And it was basically because, let's just be honest, Minnesota didn't have. It was up and down quarterback play this year. JJ gets hurt. You got other guys coming in, and he could have freaked out at any moment, and it feels like he didn't freak out. So we gave him teammate of the year. Is that a fair award to be given to Justin Jefferson?

[Hank]

A hundred percent earned, that guy. I mean, there's so many times that I would. I would pull KO to the side and be like, man, this guy is special. Like, he's different. And like you said, like just the adversary that was happening through the season and, and just the guy that showed up every day, busted his butt. I mean, worked his butt off every practice, like, where he could have just relaxed. I mean, he's the best receiver in the NFL. Like, he could just. He could coast or say, you know, I need. I need a day of rest, whatever. But, like, he's out there, like, competing every day and never complained. You know, I'm sure there was some frustration. Obviously we all had some frustration, but it never showed up.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Adam Thielen]

As a teammate, like, you appreciate that so much. And those are the guys that you want to have success. Like, you want to win for those guys. Like, why does that, why is that important for teams? Because everyone in the locker room, they want to win for that guy. They want to put in a little bit of extra effort. They want to do more in the weight room. Like, they want to practice harder for that guy, like, because they're like, this guy deserves a championship, you know, and. And so it goes along beyond just like, you know, being a good teammate. Like, that stuff really makes a difference on a team.

And.

And is why he's paid so highly. Right? Because it's not just can he make plays on the field, but he's. He's just a great guy to be around and a great leader.

Best award givers for nailing it. Yeah. Yeah. So you had a long career in the NFL? Was it 12 years that you played? 13 years.

[Adam Thielen]

Who was 13? Yeah.

[Big Cat]

Who is the best player that you ever played with? Best teammate. Not, not best teammate in the sense of good guy, but like the best player that you ever saw close up.

[Adam Thielen]

I mean, I think Justin pretty much, hands down, I'd say Adrian Peterson is, is right there, obviously. But I just think, yeah, I mean, I've never seen a guy just have so much consistency with everything stacked against him. I mean, he had every team. The only person they're trying to take away on our offense is Justin.

[Big Cat]

Yeah.

[Adam Thielen]

And he still has a thousand yards. Like, it's, it's crazy. Like that's, that's a different type of consistency. You know, guys have good seasons year after year after year, but like, they're not, Teams aren't just like focusing on one thing to take him away. Like that's what teams are doing against him. They're, they're, he's the only person that they're like, if he, he's not going to beat us, anyone else can beat us and we're fine with that. But like, Justin cannot beat us. And he still goes out there and makes contested catches, makes the tough catches, runs after the catch, moves everywhere. Has to be really smart because a lot of different plays, a lot of different moving, you know, with motions and shifts and different alignments. And so he's, he's got to be a really smart football player, which is not easy.

[PFT Commenter]

Can I throw out another name who's having an incredible career and probably underrated? Daniel Hunter. He seems like a guy who's got life figured out and just kind of like happy guy, but also just a warrior on the field.

[Adam Thielen]

The great thing about Danil is, is not a lot of people talk about him because he doesn't talk.

[Hank]

Right.

[Adam Thielen]

He's just so quiet and like, he's not going to pump himself up. You just don't really hear about his name. But like, we obviously played against him and he destroyed us. And then the next week he, you know, he had a pretty dang good game and was, was a game wrecker. But yeah, he's, he's unbelievable. I mean, practicing against him and, and hearing, you know, I always, I always enjoyed like going to an old lineman be like, hey, like, is Danilo really that good? Like, not just him, but like other guys. Right? Because you, you, you don't. When you're not, it's not a cornerback. Right. Like, I know if a cornerback is good or not good. Like I'm, I'm playing against him, but like a defensive end. Like, I'm not going against him. I'm not having to block him. Like, I don't really know. And so when you talk to guys and you're like, hey, like, is he actually this good? Or, like, what's the deal with Daniel? And they're like, dude, he's unblockable.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Adam Thielen]

Like, everyone is like. They're like, yeah, he's like, we don't know what to do. Like, it's not even fun in practice because, like, the guy's insane. Like, he's strong, he's quick, he's fast. Like, does he have a weakness? No, not really. He's long. And so, yeah, it's. He's a. He's a heck of a football player. And he was a great teammate, you know, Again, didn't. Didn't say a whole lot, but just showed up, worked hard, and again, those are the guys you always root for to have success.

[Big Cat]

What about CJ Ham? I thought I would have said CJ Ham. Best player that I played with. Yeah, Elite fullback. I love that they gave him a touchdown run his very last game for the Vikings. A guy that seems like he meant a lot to that organization.

[Adam Thielen]

Oh, the best of the best. I mean, you couldn't. You can't find a better human, a better actual, like, teammate. I mean, he's. He's a guy that, even though he's younger than me, I kind of looked up to and I. I went to with a lot of things, just how strong he is in his faith, just the type of human he is, how he treats people. Really cool thing about Hammer is we played against each other in high school, college, and then played together in the NFL. So that was. That was pretty cool. And again, just so much respect for him, how he approached them. We've trained together our entire careers and spent a lot of time together, so I was so happy for him to kind of get those. That last game at home, get the touchdown. I mean, like, you couldn't ask for a better storybook ending for him. And excited about what he. What he does post career.

I would say, like. Is there a word that's like, stronger than addicted?

It's a compulsion for him?

Yeah.

He does not know a world without blitzing. Yeah. And. And I thought it was interesting. I think they played. Was it Christmas Day? And I'm watching the game and like, Like, Detroit didn't have an answer for Cover zero. I'm like. I'm like, guys, like, for me, I'm like, Like, that's what they do. Like, that's, that's, like, how they live and die. Like, like. And so that was interesting. But, yeah, I mean, he's. It was cool to be able to set because my locker was two lockers down from Harrison Smith, and. And I would talk to him all the time about it. Like, you know, what's. What's the deal? What's the game plan this week? How are you guys? And just hearing him talk about. About flow and just how he sees things and their. Their connection, right? Like, he gave. He gave Harry a lot of control to kind of be able to get out of stuff if he called a. A blitz. And, like, they knew that they were prepared for it or they had an answer for it. Like, Harry had a lot of control to kind of get out of that and. And do some different things. And so just to. Just to hear some of those things, it was, it was cool to kind of get the inside scoop of what makes flow tick and kind of how he operates. And yeah, I mean, he just causes havoc. It's. It's cool to see.

I got a question about this year's playoffs because we obviously have the AFC Championship game coming up where it's going to be a big story that Jared Stidham is going to play. Bo Nicks got injured, out for the season. From a locker room perspective, practice perspective, how you install the game, what is this going to be like for the Broncos this week? And is it a situation where you can have a backup come in and perform good enough to win a high leverage game to get to the Super Bowl?

[Adam Thielen]

The way I look at it is, is Sean Payton is. Is where I look. Right. I don't really necessarily look at Stidham. I think I look at. At who's calling the plays and when I. The reason why I say that is because if it was like a offensive coordinator calling the plays that, you know, good offense coordinator, run pass play action, things like that. But like, Sean has been doing this a long time and he knows how to create separation for guys. Like, he's. He's going to scheme guys open. And so I think, I really, I really think that it doesn't change much for them. Obviously, Bo, like playmaker. Yes. Is it going to change? Yes. But I think the guys are still going to get open. He's. He's a capable quarterback. He's been around a while. He's been in that system. And I think, I think Sean is kind of the tipping point where, where I think they'll be just fine. Obviously, New England's defense is playing really well, flying around. I mean, that was, that was an unbelievable defensive performance on both sides there against Houston. And so I think it'll be. It'll be tough for them, but I just, I just think it won't look as different as you would think with a backup quarterback that hasn't played all year.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Big Cat]

Is there anything that. That the receivers are going to do differently to help out a guy that has less experience?

[PFT Commenter]

Good question.

[Adam Thielen]

That will be the challenge. And that and that. And that's what people don't understand is, is it takes a long time to get on the same page with a quarterback. It's not just. You can't just like. Yes. Like, do you run the route on the. That's called. Yeah, for sure. But like there's just a little bit of. Every quarterback's a little different how they, how they want you to run certain things. Is there certain checks that they're going to call? The line of scrimmage in the run game? You know, a lot of times the run game, you know, the run alerts, the run pass option stuff is kind of on the quarterback. And every quarterback kind of has their things that they like or, or sometimes, you know, it's the same place called. But this quarterback, he's probably going to throw to, you know, this route more often than this one in this same concept. And so you kind of just try to get it. It takes time to get on the same page. So I think for those receivers, I think this week is going to be like, all right, we gotta like go. Like we can't just do walkthroughs and things like that. Like, as much as we want to feel fresh on game day, like it's probably more important to get on the same page of how he's going to throw these balls. Like, what can I be, what can I be ready for in certain concepts? And you know, some quarterbacks are more aggressive, right? Like you're on the backside and a lot of times you're probably 99 not getting the ball. Well, he might come back there a little faster and get the ball out and give you the opportunity. So just kind of feeling that through practice getting full speed reps, I think they might not be as fresh on Sunday, but I think it'll be worth it to get those full speed reps.

Yeah, My, my buddy Arian Foster had an idea last week, week. And when he said it, I thought it was the stupidest idea ever. But you might appreciate as a receiver, I, I know people like, it was a polarizing take, but he said that receivers should get all the, all the credit for the yards after the catch. That quarterbacks. That shouldn't be a passing yard after the ball is caught because you did all the work after the fact. So you would get more stats than the quarterback. What do you think about that?

[Adam Thielen]

Well, I would, I would take it one step further. I think the OC should get some credit for that too because a lot of times it's like scheme, right? Like, can you, can you, can you call the right plays against, against the right coverage, right? Like if it's zone coverage and there's, there's a lot of, you know, there's plays that are a lot better versus zone than they are versus man and there's plays versus man, that are a lot better than versus zone. And so I think a lot of times it comes down to the OC's play calling that. That really gives you opportunity for run after the catch. And then obviously, like, there's just guys that have a knack for breaking tackles, catch and run. I mean, look at Jamar Chase. Like, that's not the OC's play calling. Like, he's. He's. He's making that himself. I mean, he's catching the ball in traffic, breaking a tackle, spinning off a guy and running for 50. Like, that's not the. The OC or the quarterback. Right. That's. That's him. So there is. There's a little bit of, you know, give and take there, but. But for the most part, I think, you know, the quarterback giving you catchable ball, being able to come downhill and then oc, like, you know, kind of really knowing playing that, that, that chess game of when are they going to play, man? So we can have those pick routes, give you some space to be able to catch a run. I think it's huge, too.

That was pretty shocking as well. Yeah, but. But no, honestly, that was just a crazy moment. Again you. We talked a lot about just so much respect for guys and, and guys you just want to like cheer for and guys that have success. I mean like, Teddy is like one of those guys and one of the best of the best as far as a teammate, a person, just how he treats guys. And then just like where he was at in his career, like he was, he was playing so well and we hadn't started the season yet. I get that. But still, like, like there was so much promise for that team. Our defense was like lights out. Coach Zim, you know, had those, those. Those guys just locked in. There was so. There was so much promise that year that when that happened, it was like the life just got sucked out of the whole team. And you could feel it. The moment it happened, there was just no words. No one, no one was saying anything. No one could move. Everyone was just like standing there watching and like couldn't move. Even when he left the field, like no one knew what to do. And it was really the only moment I've ever been a part of that was like that again, no matter who it was. Like, that's horrible. But when it's a guy that you have so much respect for and so much excitement for, when that happens, you just. You just don't even know what to do or say. And so glad that, I mean, that dude's. That dude's the best. I mean, he's still playing, you know, coaching high school football. Come back and playing and. And I know those guys loved him in Tampa because what a fun guy to have in the locker room. But. But yeah, crazy moment. I mean, I was literally like 10ft from him. I was in the back. I had never heard of that, so that was fantastic. But maybe because I didn't sign to the practice squad, I was just like claimed off waivers. Yeah, yeah, but it would have been a lot. It'd have been that have been really cool if I would have, you know, got released, not cleared waivers and then signed the practice world. That'd have been perfect. But that's, that's crazy. Well, and then the. There, that reminds me, there was the other one of Aaron Rodgers in the summer talking about the last. Would someone ask him a question, like games on the line, last game of the season against the Ravens to go to the playoffs. So what do the next, like three days look for you in terms of weight fluctuation? Like how, how low are we going to get down and then how, how far back are we going to climb?

Well, obviously I'm gonna get to 155. I mean, I'm gonna weigh in at 155 and then I'll get back in the cage about 180. 185.

And then when you win, we're gonna have fun and get to eat whatever we want.

Yeah, and then we win and then we get up to 200 pound.

I love it. Wait, so how was camp overall for you this time through? Was it a good camp? I mean, how, how long does camp last before a fight?

[Patty Pimblett]

This one's been about eight weeks, which is nice. When I fought Chandler, I only found out six weeks out. So only had a six week camp this time. About eight weeks. So the prep's been brilliant. This is the best camp of other. I know it sounds very cliche. Everyone says it, but this the best fight camp I've ever had. Everything's went smoothly. Even training over Christmas and New Year. It's not, not nice sitting around watching everyone eat cheesecake and a cheese board while you can't eat none.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

What's the best time of the year to fight anyone?

[Patty Pimblett]

Anything that's not January. February.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that makes sense. Would. Wait, so I saw, I saw that you, you said that you'd be open to boxing. Is that a real thing? Maybe. After this, where you. Would you be a good boxer? Do you think you could? I mean, I know that you're incredible with your hands, but is that something you actually have like considered potentially doing? Yeah, it's just something I got asked about, know what I mean? And obviously I said I'm a prize fighter. If the money's right, then yeah. Well, I'm not a boxer. I'm an MMA fighter. And I'm focused on winning the UFC world title and defending it and trying to become a two way champ in the future. But if someone wants to offer me an obscene amount of money to beat up an influencer, then I'm there.

Yeah, that sounds like a great plan. In this fight in particular, there's a little storyline that's been going on for the last few years, ever since you started working at Barstool. Oh, well, that. That just drives me on even more to want to punch his head in, doesn't it?

I think I'm loved and hated. Like, I think that must have been a couple of years ago. What? Bispin said that.

Must have been after a 4 Jared Gordon at that close fight. But I always say it like, I'm loved, I'm hated. Whether you hate me, you're tuning in to watch me hopefully get knocked out, which will never happen, or if you love me, you're tuning in to watch me win. So all that matters is eyes.

Yeah. People care about you one way or the other. I. I did see something that was from this week. It was from Armin Sarukin. I don't know if I pronounced his name right, but he started to talk some about you and I. I need to know if it's on site for us if we see this Armin guy. He said it's Chubby Patty fight week, but I'm doing the press run. Wake up, fat ass, and get to work. It's not a good look for the ufc. What the is this guy's deal?

No, to be honest, the opposites happen with me because I've had. I've had twins, you know what I mean? And everything I do now is I work even harder for them to provide to them. So I just. I don't think I've ever worked this out or being as disciplined. And it's going to continue until I retire because I'm fighting to put food in their mouths and clothes on the back.

No, I just try and have a good night's sleep every night. I mean, I don't do no regimens or. I'm not unplanned. I just sign up at least seven hours every night.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was actually talking to Spider earlier today, and he was. He was reminiscing about the time that you guys hung out before one of your fights, and he said that you put down an absolutely legendary amount of ice cream the night before a fight that you went to a ice cream.

Yeah, In Miami. Yeah. Can you. Is that normal for you? Can you walk us through what your ice cream order is the night before a fight?

[Patty Pimblett]

Yeah, I. The night before the fight. Like the day before. After you've weighed in that night, you can ease a lot. I mean, you can do what you want and you want as many carbs in you as possible. And obviously milkshakes and ice cream full of carbs. So it's slow. The sugar, what your body needs after doing a weight cut. So Friday night, I'll be doing the same thing.

Do a little, do a little pad session on Thursday before I start doing my weight cut.

I don't do, not on the day of the fight. I'll just chill, let me body recover and then it's all about the fight. I mean, I don't want to use any, expend any energy doing anything else apart from the fight.

Yeah, when I see people in the locker room and they're, they're, you know, just sitting there, it feels like they're just wishing that time passes faster so they could hurry up and get in the octagon. Like what do you do?

I'm sitting, yeah, I'm sitting there. I'm normally sitting there eating some sweets or something, know what I mean? Watching the other fights and then just a nice warm up, you know what I mean? Get yourself, get your whole body limber and get yourself nice and warm so you're ready to go.
