I think Josh McDaniels, he needs more respect. I've been saying that he's, he is a great offensive coordinator. And we definitely, we whiffed on Wednesday's show when we were talking about retread head coaches, when we're talking about D getting another shot somewhere. McDaniels is, he is that guy that got the second shot. He's going to get another shot.

And I woke up that morning after playing nine holes in nade shot where I felt like I was the most dialed I had ever been in my entire life at golf. And I told Coach Gruden, I was like, hey, just so you know, I think I figured out golf. I think I'm just good at golf now. And then proceeded to lose my first tee shot. We took like six shots to get onto the first green.

And then on the second hole, me and Big Cat both lost multiple tee shots. And so we can see it off the second tee box.

But also I thought, like, what if. What if we had the best defensive coordinator in football with the ingredients that he has right now, probably still would be a terrible defense. So then you start thinking about the draft picks that you've made, the. The signings and free agency that you've done. And now I'm like, I'm kind of split. I'm like, yeah, Adam Peters hasn't done a great job outside of drafting Jaden Daniels.

And for some reason, I just feel like Dan Quinn is going to energize the defense enough where maybe they won't be historically bad this weekend. And also if you have an embarrassing performance overseas, that's when a coach can get fired.

Yeah, well, so I don't think there'll be an embarrassing performance. Did you see Mike McDaniel actually had a press conference where. I didn't realize this, but he said that Dan Quinn was a big piece of the reason he got sober and was a big support person when he got sober, when he was coaching, when he was on Dan Quinn staff in Atlanta. There's clearly some love and Mutual respect between the two guys. That makes me believe that even if the Dolphins had the chance to embarrass, they wouldn't. Embarrass.

Then they go down, play a divisional game, weird shit happens in Miami. If they can write the ship this week, you feel a lot more confident that things are still okay. So this is a guest that I think a lot of people wanted. We're excited to have you here, but I have a very important question to ask you to start.

Okay.

Did you think we were maybe about to lose Gus Johnson, Penn State?

[Joel Klatt]

I did. See there was, I can't remember who tweeted it, but I saw one of the tweets right after. It was like Indiana broke Gus Johnson. And I will tell you, I've worked with him for 11 years and I've never heard him crack. Yeah, I knew he was, he was struggling a little bit with, with a cold last week. And then like I didn't hear it all game. And he has given some big calls.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

Cause it's a great game. And then when, when, when that play happened, I, there Was. Two thoughts. One, I was like, there's no way he's inbounds. And two, I was like, oh, he cracked right there.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

I thought we had lost.

[Joel Klatt]

I lost him for a second.

[PFT Commenter]

I was like, joel's gonna have to finish this broadcast. We don't have Gus Johnson anymore.

[Joel Klatt]

He is. So what. Here's what I love about working with Gus is that. Well, when I. We all watch and consume sports all the time, guys. And. And as. As you know, and this is not a knock against all these other guys, but everybody has, like, a prepared call, you know, and ready to go, and that's great. And it can be iconic. There's no doubt Gus reacts with pure emotion in the moment, just like you're sitting on the couch with it. And I think that's what resonates.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And that's what you heard on Saturday.

[PFT Commenter]

And. And it's. We say this because, you know, we're. We're good friends with Joe Buck, and. And we've had a lot of broadcasters on, like, your guys. Camaraderie and relationship comes through on the broadcast. And I think that's such an underrated part of watching a game where the two guys that are calling the game are friends and they have rapport. It comes across. It makes it so much better.

[Joel Klatt]

Well, thank you. First of all, that's. That's nice of you to say. And. And that's something that we effort. We talk about more so than the content. We talk about the sound and the rhythm of the broadcast. And he. And he actually taught me that. He's, you know, he's obviously so experienced, and. And he's so good at what he does. And I remember when I first started working with him, he used to talk to me, and he was like, hey, listen, man, we're just in the double Dutch right now. Don't trip the rope. He's like. Because the fan just wants the rhythm, and. And they like it when they know who's speaking. So our voices are different and our cadence is correct, but just don't trip the rope, you know? And I think that that was. That was something that he taught me early on when I started working with him, and it's something that I've held on to ever since. And in the best ways, I focus on. And he focuses on the rhythm of the broadcast in those moments.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And I think that. I think that it works.

[Max]

Yeah, it does. It's. It's a lot of fun to listen to. I did think that maybe he passed away, though. Yeah, that was after that, the. The scream he let out in that moment. I think you did a good job of. Of letting him breathe afterwards. Like, you weren't, like, checking on him. Like, are you okay, partner?

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[Max]

How does that work? Because you're talking about, like, the double Dutch. You don't want to step over the other guy's lines. I think in podcasts, it's one thing because half of our job is, like, just yelling at each other.

[Joel Klatt]

Sure.

[Max]

But when you're doing it in the booth and the game's going on, it's always nice to hear a booth like yours that lets the other person finish. There's a space the other person begins. Do you guys. Is that just the rhythm that you've established over the years, or is there actually, like, physical touching? Like, I'm. I'm gonna touch you while I'm talking.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah, yeah.

[Max]

Hands off you go.

[Joel Klatt]

Very little, like, communication between us. So it's all a rhythm that is just unspoken and. And I think it comes with. And we focus on this, by the way, with our entire crew. I'll give our producer and director a big shout out as well. Chuck McDonald's our producer. Rich Dewey is our director and. And the four of us, along with Ginny. So the five of us on the sideline, we understand that each one of us has a role for a certain moment within the game where the game is ours. You know, we know when it's Gus's time, and everybody in that team knows, all right, it's Gus's time, and he's going to go to 10. And. And that's the moment everyone knows when it's like, all right, it's time for Joel to set up what's going on, What's. What's just happened. You know, it's. It's my time in the game. We know when it's the producer's time. He's backed up on breaks. We got to get some sales items in, and we're going to lay out a little bit more so that he can work. We know when the emotion in the stadium is so great that any words we say are going to ruin it. That's the director's time to take shots and cut around and bring the fan at home into the stadium. And then we know when it's time to get a story and further the story on the field and go down to Jenny. So I think it's legitimately as nerdy as this sound. It's understanding your role. Just like any team. There's a book that I Love. And again, I know this sounds nerdy, but there's this incredible leadership book called Good to Great by Jim Collins. And one of the premises in the book is that in any business or in any group, you've got to have the right people in the right seats on the bus in order for it to succeed. And that's how I view our crew. Like we are all in unique seats and we all understand when each of us need to take the forefront of the broadcast.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Max]

It works. And I love it. I also listen to your podcast. I. I don't know if you have a name for your listeners. Is there like a fan, A fan base that I'm a part of that I'm not?

[Joel Klatt]

I don't. That's a class, Bratz.

[Max]

I don't know.

[Joel Klatt]

That would be interesting.

[Max]

Yeah. But I. I do listen to the show. You've been telling me that we're entering the golden age of college football.

[Joel Klatt]

Yes.

[Max]

For, like, the last three or four years.

[Joel Klatt]

Yes.

Are we. Are we still in the golden age? Has it. Are we about to enter it?

When is. Are we in it? Right now.

[Joel Klatt]

I think we're in it. I think that we really are. I do.

I think college football has never been better.

[PFT Commenter]

Okay. I think we're going to get to it once we kind of get a little bit more adjusted in the nil world.

[Joel Klatt]

Totally agree.

Yeah.

And I'm not saying it's perfect.

[PFT Commenter]

[Joel Klatt]

But it's never been better. And that's why I say that we're about to enter this incredible era of college football is because it's really messy and yet the product is better than we've ever had it before. And there's more teams that are involved at the top end of the sport than ever before. More fan bases that are involved. And I mean, look at Texas Tech and Indiana.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

You know, Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt. Ten years ago, if you'd have said, like, yeah, these teams are going to be, you know, in the top six and competing for a national title, you would have thought you were crazy. You know, it was Alabama, Clemson and Georgia and that's it. And maybe Ohio State.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. And to that point, I. I was explaining to someone the other day about, like, the college coaches and the buyouts and all this stuff. And I agree with a lot of what you're saying. The nil stuff, once it kind of stabilizes, I think we'll really be in the golden age. But in Indiana is a perfect example. Ten years ago, Kurt Signetti is gone to Penn State instantly.

[Joel Klatt]

100%.

[PFT Commenter]

It's, it's not even a question. He's out. But now it's a new world where, why can't he win in Indiana?

[Joel Klatt]

That's right.

[PFT Commenter]

Why can't Clarkley stay at Vanderbilt like he can.

[Joel Klatt]

That's right.

[PFT Commenter]

Lane Kiffin might stay at Ole Miss. He should.

[Joel Klatt]

He might. I, I, I've been told that basically they've told him, write a number down.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And, and LSU has told him the same thing. And I think he wants Florida.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

But I, they're hemming and hawing, you know, so that's the domino that's going to fall. But this conversation is so fascinating because we've seen this. You know, Dan Landing turned down Alabama.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

To stay at Oregon.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

That's great for the sport. I think Joey Maguire's at his dream job. It's Texas Tech. Right. That's great for the sport. And it's going to put these open jobs in a real bind. I think Penn State's in a bind right now. I think Auburn's in a bind right now. It's like, who are you going to hire?

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Max]

If you're Penn State, who would you, who would you be looking at right now?

[Joel Klatt]

That's a great question.

[Max]

It really is. Thank you. Really is. Because the SEC openings are so obviously, it's like, well, we're going to try to get Lane.

[Memes]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

Right. And Penn State. It's not as obvious. I think what happened at Penn State is that they felt like they could get Kurt Signetti, and so they made the move, and then immediately Indiana just is like, boom, 11.6 per year. And it's like, whoa.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And, and I, the reason I feel that way is that I, I don't think Penn State was going to go with the search firm, and then now they have a search firm. So it's like there's now two different strategies that have been played out at Penn State. Okay. So I'm dancing around your question. Who would I target or do I think they're going to target?

[Max]

I guess, who would you target and then who do you think? We can do both.

[Joel Klatt]

Okay. So if it was me, I would call Brian Kelly, although that's not very popular. I would call Pat Fitzgerald, although there's whatever you want to call it.

[Max]

I think Pat Fitzgerald is, he is going to get hired by a big school. And I think that he should. Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And he should. I'm, I'm firmly. He's, he's one of the best college football coaches I've ever Been around. It's a shame that he's not in right now. I think he's going to get in in this cycle, and whoever gets him is going to be really lucky. I throw out. Another name that I think is. Is fascinating is Jim Mora at UConn. He's doing a hell of a job. And if you actually look at what he did at UCLA and what UCLA is historically, it's like, okay, that guy can coach, and he's doing a heck of a job at UConn. They just beat Duke last week. And then the last name I would throw out there, and everyone in Ohio wants to hit me over the head when I say this, but Brian Hartline. Yeah, I would call Brian Hartline.

[PFT Commenter]

Can I. Can I give you one more name?

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

And it's. It probably wouldn't happen because I think, unfortunately, Penn State's in a weird spot where they have to hire someone that everyone immediately is like, wow, that's great. Yeah, Fran Brown has a down year right now with Syracuse, but that guy can recruit the hell out of football. And he's nosy area. He's from New Jersey. He's like, he coached a temple. Like, that's a guy. It would probably not be popular, but I bet you with Penn State's resources, he would make them a winner.

[Joel Klatt]

Here's what's. Here's what's fascinating to me is I get in these conversations, I was just on with Coward this. This week, and he's talking about, like, you gotta have a tried and true winner and a guy that's been a head coach before. And I'm like, timeout. And unfortunately, I didn't think of this because I'm not, like, quick enough. But afterwards I was like, wait, wait, wait. The three coaches who have won national championships in college football are Kirby Smart, Dabo Sweeney, and Ryan Day. None of them had head coaching experience before they got the job where they ultimately won a national championship. You would put Dan Laning in the elite category. You'd put Lincoln. Lincoln Riley in the elite category. There are so many guys that are. That didn't have head coaching experience before they got a job where they were ultimately an excellent head coach.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. And not only that, winning the press conference does nothing.

[Joel Klatt]

No, it doesn't.

[PFT Commenter]

You. The. The, like, more schools should wake up, especially this year. If you look around the landscape, we talked about Signetti, Clark Lee, all that stuff. But one of the best teams in the country is Texas A and M. And what they do. They won the press conference with Jimbo Fisher. And then they got a guy, Mike Elko, whoever's like, oh, what, dude? Okay. He's an unbelievable coach.

[Joel Klatt]

Not only that, he's a great fit at Texas A and M. Yeah. Understands it. And they've had a great year. I totally agree with you. And for Penn State, they need a great fit.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And you know, the, the heartline thing for me, Brian Hartline will be a head coach at some point, somewhere, I don't know where. And he's going to succeed because he recruits incredibly well. He's very detail oriented. And his whole career he's had more of an eye towards the CEO position rather than the play caller position. So, yes, he's calling plays now at Ohio State, but in the back of his mind, he's always built himself and tried to ready himself to be a head coach because now more than ever, I don't really care if you can call place. It's so much bigger than that, guys, because of nil. Like you've mentioned, because of the transfer portal. Now you have a gm, you got to build a roster every single year. You've got this revenue share that you've got to divide amongst the players. You got to talk with their agents. It's really not about whether you can call defense or offense. It's can you hire a great staff and then you manage all of those things within your, your organization.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. So. So who are they going to hire? Because that was the. Who they should look at. But who do you think it's going to end up being?

[Joel Klatt]

I think it's going to be one of those guys.

[PFT Commenter]

Okay.

[Max]

Okay.

[Joel Klatt]

I do think it's going to be one of those guys.

[Max]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

And it's, I mean, it, it's weird that Penn State is not the premier job in a, in a carousel because this is, you know, LSU and Florida.

[Joel Klatt]

So I caught a bunch of flack for saying I think LSU is a top three job in college football.

[PFT Commenter]

I agree.

[Max]

Let's see. Top three.

[PFT Commenter]

I think it's a better job than Alabama.

[Max]

I would say I did.

[Joel Klatt]

So that's what I caught all that. I totally agree with that.

[PFT Commenter]

And it's not, it's not, it's not a slight Alabama. But we've said this on this podcast and we've had people come on and explain it. But there LSU has the unique thing. It's actually probably the only two states is Ohio State and, and Louisiana, where kids are born in that state. And that's all they want to do is play for that school. And that right there gives you A leg up.

[Joel Klatt]

There's also more resources at LSU than there are at Alabama.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

You know, like they've. They've got a couple of boosters that are just. How do you call it? They're just a little bit more in the shadows than other schools. You know, like Texas Tech. This guy at Texas Tech, he's very much at the forefront.

[PFT Commenter]

Oh, yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

Names on the field. And it's like, I'm the guy doing this. There is a guy at LSU that is wealthier than the Texas Tech donor that is behind everything going on at lsu. They've got massive research. Talking about Todd Graves, the raising canes.

[Max]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

He's a friend of ours. Yeah, he's the man. Yeah, he's.

[Joel Klatt]

He's incredible.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And committed to that place. And he's among others as well.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

You know, so like Bama doesn't have that.

[PFT Commenter]

Guys.

They. They don't.

[PFT Commenter]

They have the history. But also. And it's just the in state recruit, like if you're. If you, if you're taking the Florida job, you're competing against Florida State, you're competing against Miami. And obviously recruiting is so different now that it's not. You get. You pull talent from everywhere but Louisiana. Kids in Louisiana play for lsu.

[Joel Klatt]

There's.

[PFT Commenter]

In Ohio play for Ohio State.

[Joel Klatt]

There are four schools, five schools that can literally open up their back doors and within 20 square miles have a top five recruiting class. It's Miami, Texas A&M. Texas, LSU and USC. Yeah, I don't think there's another one. Maybe Georgia.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

Is in there as well. But I think you've got to go a little bit further. But when you talking about recruiting base, like those schools have a base.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

That they can, you know, pull from to get as good a talent as anybody.

[Max]

Do you think that Brian Kelly is going to get hired, given that he was just fired for cause at LSU on Monday after he. He was fired twice? I feel bad for the guy now. I didn't think that was possible.

[Joel Klatt]

What a mess. I know that is. And that's the only. By the way, that's what you just asked is the only reason that that job is not attractive yet the government is. Because it's. It's a disaster. It's like, well, who's in charge? Yeah, who's my boss?

[Max]

You direct report to the governor of the state.

That's.

[Max]

That's what you have to look at. I mean, that's the reality. If you're taking that job and just by hearing him give a press conference I know nothing about the man's politics. I don't either anything that he's done in the state. I just know that that is a guy that is going to be a problem for a head coach.

[Joel Klatt]

You never want to work for someone that is passionate about what you do but knows very little about it.

[Max]

Yeah. Yeah. But they don't know that. They know very little.

[Joel Klatt]

No, no. They think they know a lot.

[Max]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

But they don't. So I. I don't know how attractive. I think in the overarching conversation. LSU is a great job.

[Max]

Yep.

[Joel Klatt]

This year. I don't know. Because of all of that mess behind the scenes.

I do kind of like, governor, run the damn ball, though.

[Joel Klatt]

Like.

Yeah.

If that's what you're dealing with from the governor, there's something charming about that.

Yeah.

That's a Deep south kind of way.

That's right.

Yeah. I do think that LSU is going to be a great job and I.

Who do you think is going to get it? Do we. Do you guys think Lane's going to take that job? I don't think it's going to take that job.

I think he's going to stay. I think. I think he's going to stay at Ole Miss.

I do, too.

If you had asked me last week, I would have said no, no, no. He's. He's definitely going to leave. I'm leaning that direction.

Yeah. Because, I mean, think about what he has. He. You can win there. He's proven that. And he also has. If he goes and takes a Florida job, the LSU job, he has to win right away.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

He's built up the capital at Ole Miss. He's got a really good thing going and they're at places as a program that they've never been before, and he's the reason for it. So if they have a down year, no one's going to be like, hey, get rid of Lane.

[Joel Klatt]

It's a great point.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

I also let me make an analogy to Colorado, which is where I played, and Dion. Like, Colorado needed Deion Sanders badly. Like they needed air to breathe. But I would make the argument Deion needed a place like Colorado because it wasn't a place that was going to be heavy handed with tradition or you can't do this or that. It's just like, hey, man, you've got the keys to the entire castle. Do it how you want to do it. This is your program. And in some ways, Lane has that at Ole Miss and he wouldn't have that at other places. You know, there would be, you know, boosters or people around saying, like, well, we don't do it that way. And Lane's like, I do. Yeah, sorry.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

And at Ole Miss, it's his program.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

And I think if you sat back and if you're Lane and you. You valued that, then. Then you would stay. That's why I'm leaning that direction. I think Ole Miss is good for Lane as much as Lane is good for Ole Miss.

I agree with that. Maybe because we bet that in August, maybe. No, I don't think he has enough games left because he doesn't play a champion.

The problem is, is not only it's the number of games, but it's the opponents.

Because he doesn't have the opponents. Like Reed's going to get to play Texas. Everyone's going to watch that saying and Mendoza are going to play each other. Simpson and Reed may play in the SEC championship game. So, like, they've got these marquee moments. And matchups. I've always thought you needed stages to win. Like Mendoza last week.

And then I watch him. I'm like, okay. I could see the way he moves in the pocket, the way he's, you know, decisive, accurate and unflappable. You got to do a lot more to be Tom Brady.

But I love his bounce back.

Because he's thrown some big interceptions and big moments. Like the pick six against Oregon.

Yeah. If you.

If you guys don't know, he throws a pick six against Oregon late in that game, and Oregon ties the game, comes out next drive, drives right down the field, throws a touchdown pass. He throws that pick. It allows Penn State to go up and deep into that game, into the fourth quarter, comes back, drives down the field, you know, so I love that aspect. And that does remind me of Brady. I'm talking about when I sit with him. And in those production meetings, he said three words and I was like, oh, my gosh, this is Kirk Cousins.

Do you think.

And I don't mean that in a bad way.

Do you think Julian saying, like, so we've been very high on Ohio State. We were, I think, the first to say that this year's team was better than last year's team. I think we said it in September. We might have been doing it as a bit, but it turned out to be true. That happens to us sometimes.

When a bit turns out.

Yeah, it's great.

But Julian saying like that, the. The one thing you could say about Ohio State this year, they have been so dominant. What happens when they're in that type of game? Yeah, that situation where it's tight late and Mendoza's proven it. Do you have any reservations about Ohio State in those type of moments? Because they're going to be in those games in the playoffs.

[Joel Klatt]

I only have one reservation about Ohio State, and I don't know how great they are running the football.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. That's where they're not better than last year.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah, that's right. Because Those two backs were tremendous last year, Henderson and Judkins. They had a moment of adversity when Penn State gets a fumble recovery right before half and scores. And so they have to go in at halftime, and it's 1714. And that third quarter, offensively was Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Julian saying. And that showed me a lot, because it's like, okay, when you're backed into a corner, you're going to show me your actual blueprint. You're going to show me exactly who you are. And they came out and just threw haymakers. And I'm like, that's the best passing game in America. Yeah, he. He's so impressive with how quick his mind works, and then his release and then his accuracy. Guys, it's off the charts.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

His accuracy. So normally a guy that throws for 80% is going to throw, like, 80% of his passes at the line of scrimmage.

[PFT Commenter]

Right.

[Joel Klatt]

If you look at average yards of air, yards per pass, he's in the top five in terms of throwing the football, you know, down the field in college football. So to be at that percentage is. Is wild.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. And I am a believer that Ohio State, the way that. That their schedule has, you know, they're so much better than these teams that they haven't had to fully unleash it. And I think there is a gear there that they're kind of not holding back intentionally. But you've seen flashes of it every now and then where they'll be like, all right, we're just gonna. We're just gonna do this right now, and we're just gonna score very quickly, and, you know, Jeremiah is going to get it. And then Carnell Tate, and they have that.

[Max]

The Washington game was like, yeah, the.

[PFT Commenter]

Washington game, where they kind of putzed around and they're like, you know what? Let's just hit the Jeremiah Smith button for a second.

[Joel Klatt]

And I think that this might be, like, too deep, but I think that's Coach Day growing.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

Because I think there were times in the past that. That he played games against the narrative and not against the opponent. Every time against Michigan, you could argue that.

[Max]

Yeah, he went on tirade against Lou Holtz.

Yeah.

He tried to run the ball against Michigan last year.

[Joel Klatt]

And. And this year, it feels very opposite. And actually, post Michigan last year, it felt very. Their run through the playoff, it was like, no, this is who we are. Yeah, like, come. Come and get it, you know, and. And Tennessee got.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah, got that.

[Joel Klatt]

Oregon did, you know, and this year, it feels different. They go up against Texas and it's like there was no. There was no other opponent. It's just like we're just going to win the game with a quarterback that's making his first start. So guess what we're going to do? Not going to put him in a precarious spot. We're going to win the football game with a great defense. And it's like. And that's fine because that's the point.

[PFT Commenter]

Right?

[Joel Klatt]

They did the same thing against Washington, those two games in particular. Think about from their standpoint. They've got this quarterback that is brand new. He's making his first start ever against what was at the time of the number one team in the country. So they didn't put him in harm's way at all. Didn't try to put the game on his shoulders. His first start, or excuse me, his first road start ever was at Washington, which at the time had the second longest home win streak in college football. So guess what they didn't do? Put the game on his shoulders. So to me, it was strategic.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

You know, and people are like, well, they didn't look this or that. And I'm like, no, no. They kind of executed exactly what they wanted to in those moments.

[PFT Commenter]

And now it all comes down to Michigan.

[Joel Klatt]

Will. He looks. It looks like.

[PFT Commenter]

Like that's. It's. It's crazy that this rivalry has gotten to. You know, there's been points in history where the rivalry has been so great, but right now it can't have been.

[Joel Klatt]

Better than the last few years.

[PFT Commenter]

I don't know how.

[Joel Klatt]

Like, I know the ten year war. I know all of that history, but guys, it's crazy. This has been. And we. I've gotten to call every one of them.

[Max]

Right.

This has been insane.

Insane. And, and you, you can't script it better than Ohio State having a national championship team last year and still losing to Michigan.

[Joel Klatt]

Oh, my gosh.

It's crazy.

I will tell you, that's. Of all the games I've ever called, I took my headset off and I was like, that didn't just happen.

[PFT Commenter]

I felt the same way.

[Joel Klatt]

I was like, no way.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. I couldn't believe it.

There was nothing in my prep, nothing that I was like, well, they've got a chance here. Nothing.

[PFT Commenter]

Right. They couldn't pass. They couldn't throw the ball.

[Max]

Last year, they didn't really try to. Until late in the second half. Like, okay.

[Joel Klatt]

The one thing that I missed it in, in that game specifically is, is just how good those two defensive tackles actually Were.

[Max]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And what those two allowed them to do. And by the way, that Michigan team, if you take a look at the last five games of the season, they were the best defense in college football.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

They beat Ohio State, they beat Alabama. You know, they beat, they hung with Indiana, with Indiana, like they were playing great offenses and they were still the number one defense in the country. I definitely miss that leading into that game. But this one could be incredible because there's a really good chance we'll see if Michigan can beat Northwestern this weekend in Wrigley. You know, there's a solid chance that Michigan, sitting there at 9 and 2 and with a win could get that last second to last spot in the College Football Playoff. Like this could be a monster as well.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Max]

And so looking past that, it does feel like we're on an Indiana, Ohio State collision course for the champ game.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[Max]

Yeah. So tell me about how those styles match up and what you see in them. Because I, I keep going back and forth. I keep talking myself out of one side or the other. But what do you see in terms of like, does Indiana. I feel like they've got the dudes this year. They've got the, they've got the players. So I don't know that it's going to be that lopsided. It will be lopsided a little bit in terms of talent, but they've, they've closed the gap quite a bit. So what do you see happening?

[Joel Klatt]

So to beat Ohio State, I firmly believe you have to have great balance on offense. Because if you give that defense as athletic as they are, a one way go and you're just a passing team or you're just a running team, I think that they're too good for that. And so because of that, one of the rare teams in the entire country that I think actually matches up well with Ohio State is Indiana. Because of their balance, because they can run the football five times. They've run it for over 300 yards. Now they didn't run it great against Penn State. And that's the, the recipe to beat Indiana is, is slow down their run game. But Mendoza is also very good. So they can throw the football, they can run the football. That's going to make life difficult on what I think is the best defense in college football. And then on the opposite side, here's what I like this, this idea of putting Julian saying in a pressure cooker, getting pressure to him, making him feel uncomfortable. No one's been able to do that. But Indiana rushes the passer as well as anybody. And they do it in a unique way. And so because of the structures that they run on the defensive side, if I were to say of any team in the country, like, what's the toughest matchup for Ohio State? It's Indiana. And so I can't wait for that game. I hope that we get that game. I think Indiana is as. As I think they can win a national championship. I really do. The my question for them, I said the run game for Ohio State. My question is health and injury because they haven't gotten to recruit like Ohio State or some of these other teams and build up class after class after class and have a bunch of depth. And so as. And we saw it last week, Elijah Surratt was down. They had a left guard that was down and they struggle a little bit. So if they're healthy, they're really good.

[PFT Commenter]

List the teams that can win the national championship this year.

[Joel Klatt]

Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A and M, Georgia, Texas Tech, Oregon.

[Max]

So no Bama.

[PFT Commenter]

No Bama.

[Joel Klatt]

I know Bama fans already hate me, so it is what it is.

[Max]

Who cares?

[Joel Klatt]

Here's the thing with Bama. I love what Alabama does throw in the football. They are not good enough elsewhere. So they're going to run into a matchup that is not favorable for them and they will lose. That's just the way I feel about it. That's. It's tried and true. NFL college, you cannot be one dimensional. And we've seen a few different times during the course of the year where Simpson has not been at his best. Versus Florida State. They lost second half against Georgia. They got pressure to them. They stagnated. Georgia almost came back and win second half against lsu. They stagnated, you know, and now granted, LSU couldn't do anything on offense and they won those games. But that will come back to bite them at some point. Like if you put them up against Ohio State. Sorry, like Bama's not winning that game because Ohio State can focus on the passing game.

[PFT Commenter]

Right. What about. So you mentioned a team, Texas Tech. You've seen them live. I'm a big fan. I do think defensively at least they definitely have the chops.

[Joel Klatt]

Totally.

[PFT Commenter]

Do you trust their offense, though? In a. Hey, we got to beat 3, 4 really, really good teams here.

[Joel Klatt]

You know, it's borderline. It's borderline. What I do appreciate about them is that they are balanced so they can run it, they can throw it. I think Baron Morton is a good. And part of this too is Mac Leftwich is their offensive Coordinator young guy. Not many people know who he is. I love what he does. It's one of those epiphanies where I'm like, hold on. This is a guy that is doing something totally different than anybody before him. So here's what he's doing. You guys have heard of like the deep choice offense that Art Briles ran and now Tennessee runs. Are you familiar with that? Okay. And then you, You've heard of, of like the. The Chip Kelly, Gus Malzahn spread running attack. Right. And like that. That's a famous offense. And then you've got the traditional Mike Leach, Lincoln Riley, air raid. Mack has married all three. Three of those together. And so he has elements of all three in his offense. Whereas, like, Tennessee is just a pure kind of deep choice offense. And. And all the others are fairly pure breed. And he's got this. He's got this mixture of an offense that allows him to have answers. It's one of the reasons I think that they're. They've got a shot. And that defense is really good.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah. Yeah. I'm. I'm high on Texas Tech. And it's also the, you know, you cover. You do a lot of Big 12 games as well. There is always going to be a perception of a Big 12 team not being good enough.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

And it's like. But Arizona State took Texas to the limit.

[Joel Klatt]

I was going to say Texas. What was it, 4th and 13. Like they were dead in the water.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

I listen, Texas Tech is. Is a heck of a team. I'm. I'm secretly hoping they don't get one of the buys because I want to see somebody have to go down there and play in. That would be awesome.

Everywhere.

What's going on with the tortillas? The controversy? It's been banned, but they still do it. Are people sneaking tortillas in games? And if so, how. How are you sneaking the tortillas into the games?

[Joel Klatt]

I have no idea. I have no idea. I don't know why we would ban something like this.

It seems like the definition of what.

[PFT Commenter]

Makes college football different than the NFL.

[Joel Klatt]

That's right. Let's lean into that. Let's lean into our differences. Our tribalism. Yes. Our traditions.

You also didn't mention Notre Dame.

[Joel Klatt]

Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

You think they are. I think Notre Dame is. I don't know if they can win the national championship, but they are very good. And I think people have the perception and the games they played at the beginning of the season are very different than what they are now in terms.

[Joel Klatt]

Of defensively, Totally agree with that. I think they are elite running the football. Elite. And so it would take a really strong defense just to stop that. My concern is, is that even In a win, C.J. carr played so bad against USC. And I'm like, hold on a second. Like, what happens when he sees Ohio State, right? Or when he sees Cassius Howell from Texas A and M? I know that they already played. They lost that game, you know, so they've, they've played their two toughest opponents and lost. And to me, like, that's, that's why I don't.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Max]

Oregon's still in there.

[Joel Klatt]

I like that Oregon is still in there. And I know that that same, you know, you could say, like, hey, their toughest opponent, they lost to Indiana. There's something about that roster. So here's another thing. In the last four years, the team that has the most draft picks wins the national championship. And if you look at like some of these top 50 lists, or I start to compile my top 50 and top 60 players in the draft, the top two are Ohio State and Oregon. And it's like, so they, that's why I include them. It's because I'm like, they have the top end talent now. They're young in a lot of areas, but. And I'm just. Dan Landing is, dude, that, that guy is a war dad. Like, he's gonna win it.

[PFT Commenter]

I like that. War daddy.

[Max]

War daddy's good. I. I follow up question, Mr. Klatt, PFT commenter here, from part of my take, do you think that maybe the reason why the last four teams have won championships, have more draft picks is because they won national championships and then they're seen in national championship game, performing, making plays, and then NFL scouts are like, I love that guy.

[Joel Klatt]

Yes. You got to have players play really well to win the national championship. If players play well, they're going to be scouted. Scouted more favorably.

[PFT Commenter]

Yep.

[Joel Klatt]

So, yes, to answer your question, those teams, even before the season, though, you would have said, like, hey, that's. That team's littered with NFL talent. Here's a great example of that. A guy in the 23 Michigan team that before the year wasn't mentioned as like a real elite NFL prospect. And by the end, after they played Alabama and Nick Saban and Washington and win the national championship, Mike Sane Restill, he was like the talk of the scouting universe. And it's like, man, this guy is incredible. He was the whole key to the defense and I think that's. That speaks to your point that it's like the players developing into that make them national champions. I think that that's probably correct.

He's a great player.

[Joel Klatt]

He really is.

[PFT Commenter]

Mikey, I got a question about your career as an athlete. Yeah, we talked about a little bit on the act, but you were baseball player first and you got drafted 11th round. Padres tried out. How many years did you try out for or were you trying to.

[Joel Klatt]

Actually, I was in the minor leagues for three.

[PFT Commenter]

Three.

[Joel Klatt]

Three seasons.

[PFT Commenter]

Okay, and then what was the highest level you got to.

[Joel Klatt]

I played. I told that story. I played one week of like AAA spring training and then really just like single A ball.

[PFT Commenter]

Okay.

[Joel Klatt]

So played a couple of double A games in spring training, but yeah, that. That was kind of it.

[PFT Commenter]

You can't. You actually. We need to tell the Ricky Henderson story again because PF again. Yeah, yeah. You have such a great one. We got to sell it.

[Joel Klatt]

This is my best story from minor league there. There are. I need to write a book, but this one is the best, so rest in peace. Sean Burroughs was a third baseman for the Triple A team with the San Diego Padres. And I was a third baseman on the lower levels in the minor leagues. And if a guy gets hurt or a sore. Sore arm or something in spring training, it's just like, hey, like, go fill in for him. You know, there's just very little structure. And so Sean Burroughs was. Was banged up and he needed like four or five days off. And they were just like, hey, clap, like, go take Sean's spot in the lineup and play with the Triple A team for the next four or five days. I'm like, great. You know, that's awesome. So the next day, Ricky Henderson gets signed by the Padres to a minor league contract. And he's 41, I think at the time, maybe 42. And Sean Burroughs played third, hit second on the AAA team, and Ricky Henderson signs a AAA contract. Where do you think he hits leadoff? So here I am, I'm sitting in the two hole behind Rickey Henderson out on the, like the outer field. This isn't even in the stadium. These are these outer fields out there in spring training in Peoria, Arizona, and I'm just like, in awe. Like, there's Rickey Henderson, my goodness. And so I'm sitting there and I would be getting into the on deck circle, and he'd be walking up to the plate, you know, and he'd be tapping his toes and doing his little shuffle, even for no fans, right? Still doing his shuffle. And he'd turn around and he'd say, three. I'd be like, what? Look around. Like, what? What is he talking about? I didn't know what he's next. Step back to take his. I'm like, what in the world is going on? But in my mind, all I could think about is the 80s Bash Brothers.

[Max]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And I'm like, man, I have to hit a home run so that Ricky's waiting for me at home home plate, and I'm going to be coming hot. Just like, bam. You know, give him the Bash Brothers right there. Feel like I'm McGuire Canseco, you know, like, let's go.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

So I am swinging from the heels on every pitch that's even remotely close to the zone. I don't care. Slider. You bet. Splitty. Let's go. I'm hitting this thing out, right? Just every at bat. Four, three. Two days of this. Three days of this. I'm like, I can't take it anymore. I have no idea what this guy is talking about. He's talking to himself. When he gets. He's talking to the third person. What is happening? So I ask our manager, Jeff Gardner. I'm like, skip, why in the hell does Ricky keep telling me a number before he goes up to bat? And he's like, son, that's how many pitches he expects you to take so he can steal second.

[PFT Commenter]

So good.

[Max]

I love that. So I do love how he was a big third person guy. Yeah. We've been missing.

[Joel Klatt]

He was the best I've ever heard.

[Max]

Did he do third person in front.

[Joel Klatt]

Of you all the time? I never heard him say anything other than third. So he would get to first. And again, I always say, like, these are the back fields. There's nobody there, guys. This is, like, quieter than beer league softball. Right? Like, there's no. There's no moms in the sand. There's no. There's nobody there. There's no wives in the stands. And so he would get to first and he would. I want to almost get up, you know, he would do his little, like, shuffle and tap his toes, you know, and. And he would be on, and we could hear him talking to himself, leading off. Firstly, Ricky gets on, and we'd all look over and be like, is he saying, like, yeah, yeah, he's talking. And then you would hear him say, like, ricky steals bags. It was unbelievable.

[Max]

I love that.

[PFT Commenter]

That's so good.

[Max]

We desperately need a new third person guy.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Max]

We haven't had one of those.

[PFT Commenter]

We really do. So. So I. I brought up this whole baseball thing because you then. What was the decision? Was there a moment where you're like, all right, this is clearly not going to work.

[Joel Klatt]

And then 100, most guys, a specific.

[PFT Commenter]

Moment who do that go to play another sport, they don't have success in the other sport. You then go and start for three years at Colorado as a quarterback. Like, how did that. How did that all go down?

[Joel Klatt]

So Mark Pryor. Yeah, you remember.

[PFT Commenter]

Perfect. Perfect delivery.

[Joel Klatt]

Perfect delivery.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

Smooth calves the size of a gumball machine. Just, like, massive calves. He's rehabbing. And this is, like, height of mark Pryor. This is 0102. Right. Like, he and Kerry Wood are like, the guys. Remember, they were always injured.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And so he comes down to Mesa, Arizona, for an extended spring rehab start. And lo and behold, the extended spring Peoria Padres roll into town. So we drive over to Mesa to play the Cubs. And my career is not going great. My lifestyle is not great. I'm like, what am I doing? You know? Like, I hate to say this, but, like, baseball, they are not educated folks in the sport of baseball. And I'm looking around and I'm like, this ain't the life, you know, for me. So we go over to Mesa, and we're facing Mark Pryor again, side field, and Mark Pryor's pitching. And then we find out, like, oh, yeah, it's a rehab start. He's throwing 60 fastballs. He's not even throwing off speed. So, like, he's out here just to throw fastballs, and, like, they don't care. And I'm like, I'm a fastball hitter. This is great. I can't wait. And this dude gets up there and gives us that perfect delivery. And it's nice and smooth. And it looks like he's throwing the ball 27 miles an hour. It's just, like, effortless. And then the ball looks like an Acme Rocket comes out of the back and then just goes like. And so I'm sitting up there. No, he's throwing a fastball. I feel like I'm a fastball hitter. I barely had my foot down, and the ball hits the glove, and I was like, I need to quit.

[PFT Commenter]

Oh, man.

[Joel Klatt]

That was it. I struck out on three fastballs, swung through two of them, walked back to the dugout, and I was like, I think I need to go to college.

[PFT Commenter]

That's. That's incredible.

[Joel Klatt]

So that was the moment. So when I go back, I quit baseball, went back to Colorado, and to be honest, like I said, it Was about education and lifestyle. I just needed to get out of minor league baseball. I needed to get an education. And I walked on at Colorado because of that. And lo and behold, it was like. It worked out.

[PFT Commenter]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

I don't know how else to explain it.

[PFT Commenter]

It's incredible.

[Joel Klatt]

Worked out.

[Max]

How awesome was it being the quarterback at Colorado?

[Joel Klatt]

It was phenomenal. I grew up there.

[Max]

Yeah.

[Joel Klatt]

And so that was my team growing up. This is why I went back. I thought it would be amazing just to run out behind Ralphie, you know, because my dad had taken me to those games my whole life. And then to be the quarterback, I. Man, it was. It was a dream come true. There's no doubt. Although after, you know, in college, they don't love like career quarterbacks. So once you're a third year quarterback at a. At a college, the fan base is like, okay, I think we're done with him.

[PFT Commenter]

Who's.

[Joel Klatt]

Who's the shiny new object? So the end of my career didn't end all that great, but it was an unbelievable time. I loved it.

[Max]

I have to imagine that's a school that it is exceptionally cool to be like a star athlete.

[Joel Klatt]

It was great.

[Max]

It's a beautiful place.

[Joel Klatt]

It was great. And. And my. So when I come back, I'm older now, right. So I'm 21 and my first year as a starter, me and a teammate of mine who I had played against in high school, and he. He also kind of walked on late. And so we go back, but then we just lived with three guys that didn't play. And we lived in this house, like right on the hill, right up from the universe. 833 18th St. I really hope someone's living there that listens to this. Yeah, it was the best house. I lived in the room in the basement. My roommate had a six foot python that got out, didn't find him for six months. Like it was quintessential college house. But what would happen is our roommates would be in the stands and they would take our jerseys that like we had gotten from previous seasons, like our actual jerseys and wear them in the stands. They would take them out of our closets, wear them in the stands, and then just invite everyone back to the house. So we would get home from games and it was packed, right? Like our house. And there would just be people all over the place, in our bedrooms, all over. It was. It was wild.

[PFT Commenter]

And it also was Colorado before, you know, little down, you know, the football program last years before Dion got there. But you guys were still living off the 90s, where it's like Colorado football was.

[Joel Klatt]

So we had. We had won the Big 12 championship in 2001 and then played for it in 02 and 04 and 05. And so, like, we. We were okay. The problem is 05 was my senior year. We played Texas twice, Vince Young's Texas team, once in Austin and then again in the Big 12 championship game down in Houston. And they beat us 70 to 3.

Oh, it's tough way. Yeah.

[PFT Commenter]

70 to 3.

[Joel Klatt]

Ooh, yeah, bro.

Try to broadcast. How did you decide to get into broadcasting? Because it feels by chance you've got the voice for it. Like, did you always have that voice?

[Joel Klatt]

No. Oh, I, you know, tried to smoke eight packs of Marlboros. No, I'm kidding. I got into it by chance, actually. I thought I would always be a coach or go into, like, investment banking. And so I was. I was doing that. I was doing investment banking after college, and I was working for this REIT real estate investment trust in Denver. And there was a high school football package of games on the local Fox Sports Rocky Mountain back in the day. Do you remember Alfred Williams, the defensive player for the Broncos?

Sounds familiar.

[Joel Klatt]

Okay, so Alford was the analyst for this high school football package. And Alford got sick one night. So he said, I don't think he wanted to go call a high school football game. And the network called me because they knew I was back. I'd just been released from the Lions, and they were like, hey, will you do a high school football game? And I. And I said no. And then they begged me to do it and said they'd give me 200 bucks. And so I went and did it. And that's literally how my broadcasting career started.

And you were just like, were you good at it from the start?

[Joel Klatt]

So if you went back. Executive grabbed me after the game. His name was Ken Miller. And Ken. I owe my entire career to Ken because he said, hey, you were really good. I'm gonna give you three more. And I told him no. And I was like, well, this is not what I want to do. This is not what I do. I'm a banker. And he was like, no, you're not. So he gave me three more. And then he started putting me on other things. And then he sent the tape, unbeknownst to me, to Fox Sports Southwest. And all of a sudden, they put me on the Big 12 studio show. And then the real estate market crashes in 07 and I lost my job, my real job, and my wife, thankfully, she's amazing. Sarah Klatt, she came to me and she. She said, hey, I just got this pharmaceutical sales job. It covers us. Try to make it work. Very. Try to make a broadcasting work. So I got this, like, low rent radio show in Denver and started doing radio and, and TV and just started working my way up.
