Radio Host Reggie
Dude we talked about that yesterday. Utterly ridiculous. What a guy.
Radio Host Ron
I am fascinated. Your son can't wear your number but you gave him your name.
Radio Host Reggie
The problem I just. I just know your life. Yolanda is pissed. Yeah Yolanda. Yolanda Hardaway is got to be. I mean she's holding out. I mean he keep it not even think about the draws right now. If my. If you're going to do that to our son. That's the only number he's ever worn and he's worn it to honor your ass. And you get now that thing's got to stay in the rafters because he got to. He's going to have his own legacy.
Sports Analyst Ron
Stop.
Radio Host Reggie
Utterly ridiculous. Anyway let's have ourselves a big hours Clint Sterner he's in with us throughout the 9 o' clock hour radio thon 26 to 71777 let's. Let's get it rolling as as we have been But I do want to play this cause Clint, I know you had some thoughts on this Greg Cosell who is one of the I think one of the best and go to guys in terms of film watching specifically quarterbacks that he does a lot of film watching on A lot of people trust his opinion and his thoughts. He had this to say about maybe potential next steps for C.J. stroud.
Greg Cosell (Football Analyst)
C.J. stroud. The last couple of years has been up and down. Now, keep in mind, his first year in the league, he was in a Kyle Shanahan type offense with Bobby Slowik. Now, in that offense, the quarterback has nothing to do with calling protections. And then they got off to a slow start his second year and they fired Slowik and they made a fairly significant change in approach, which has now continued. And they went more with a New England Patriots style style of offense. And in the New England style of offense, the quarterback is responsible for setting protections. That's a major, major adjustment for a quarterback. It adds to the mental part of playing the position. And I've met CJ Stroud. He's a very intelligent young man. But when you have to make that change and it's, it's a process and he'll get better and better at it, but I think it slowed down just his whole processing and I think there were times where I thought he was indecisive playing the position and therefore was not as anticipatory as we saw him in his rookie season.
Radio Host Reggie
All right, when you hear that first off, Clint, is that, is that what you see as well and what you've seen as well? And do you think you think they should continue that approach or maybe look at what he had major success with early on?
Sports Analyst Clint
Yeah, it's absolutely what we've seen to some degree. You know, I think it, I think it varies from game to game and game plan to game plan with all the changes that they do. But yeah, I think overall, evaluating CJ Stroud, I think that is the big change. We've talked a lot this week, Ron, about the, you know, year one, how efficient he was with the explosive plays to year three, he was efficient and the explosive plays disappeared. There's obviously a scheme change and there's, there's obviously been some regression. And then we talked yesterday, specifically, Ron, about you know, the, the things that the Texans can do to make sure that C.J. stroud is the best that he can possibly be in 2026. And I had a list of about four or five things and one of those was to simplify. Right. And, and I think exactly what Greg Cosell is speaking to a lot of people when, when they hear me or anybody say, well, simplify, they think dumbed down. They think the quarterback's not smart. They think, they think you got to cut the offense in half. This is something that goes on in every quality offense, is to keep things as simple as they need to keep them. Right. If you've got like Sean McVeigh out, out there with Matthew Stafford, you don't need to keep things simple. You know, Mike McCarthy in Pittsburgh with Aaron Rodgers, you don't need to keep things simple. Right? The advantage you have is you can be as complicated and multiple as you want because these guys, everything that the game can throw at him, right? It varies per quarterback. And it's not a, it's not a negative or it's not damning. It's, it's just, it's just what good quality coat offensive coaches do is you simplify. And I don't think it's a secret to Greg's point. I don't think it's a secret that C.J. stroud has, has struggled with that protection piece. We saw DeSean Watson struggle with that constantly. How many times, Ron, did We talk about DeSean Watson spending 75% of the play clock at the line of scrimmage trying to figure out who the hell's coming, who's not coming. And he's snapping the ball. He's got three seconds to snap the ball. He doesn't even get a chance to look at the cornerback leverage or the safety depth and rotation and movement like he, the things that are really important, he didn't ever get a chance to really look at, right? And so you see. And now that's obviously an extreme. It was blatantly obvious with Desean, where, with, with C.J. he just struggles with it. It's not something that he can't do. But, but the whole point, Ron, is the simplification of it, right? Is if you, if that's something that D', Amico, Ryan and Nick Casserole spent three years with C.J. stroud, you didn't let him do it for two years. You let him do it for one year. It wasn't as clean as you thought. You know him better than anybody out there, right? Is it a good idea to continue your system, right, this, this New England system, is it a good idea to continue that system and say, nope, in our system, our quarterback does this, or is it better to go, hey, no, our center is going to handle this. This, this part of, of the protection, this part of the IDing the, the, the, the, the mic, if you will. I think that's simplifying it. But, but, but setting the protections and, and simplifying it for C.J. stroud. I, I think, I think that audio. Just show it. I think it for, for what we've talked about this week, Ron, on, on the drive in the afternoons, I think it was, it was just right there. I mean somebody of of co sells ilk talking exactly about what we've been talking about is is some of the things to help CJ play better. And that's one of them, man.
Radio Host Reggie
I It is, it is an interesting thought of like how good he was doing what he did.
Radio Host Ron
Yeah.
Radio Host Reggie
And then to to put that my question is are they capable of switching to a situation to where it was more like the first year and you. And are they capable of doing that or. Because that's one of the things to me that I feel is rigid with that that offense is there doesn't seem like there's a lot of like flexibility in certain aspects of it. Like.
Radio Host Ron
Oh, like melding this off with something
Radio Host Reggie
else or just like, like can you just shift to where. All right. This is what we're going to do with our quarterback. We're going to handle protections in a similar vein that they do in the McVeigh Shanahan offense. And to me it would just make sense. Well, let's go there instead of maybe just saying we're going to force him to try to play this way and get better this way when it is not his strength. I just, I Clint, it is, it is hard for me to get to. I understand growth and trying to get better and better with certain things, but if a dude had this level of success, doing something this way, to completely veer off of it to me is something that I don't understand when it was the level of success that he had.

Sports Analyst Clint
Well, you go back to, I mean there's several things at play here, right? Did d' Amico Ryans really know what he was doing when he fired Bobby Slowik and they hired Nick Kaley as a defensive minded head coach? Do you understand how deep we are right now talking about how it impacts your quarterback play? I, I, you know, you gotta, you gotta wonder. I don't know. But, but to your point precisely, are they capable? The answer is yes. You know, there's, there's not an offense in the world that, that you can't, you can't delegate for a lack of better terms that you can't say, hey, especially if you're gonna, if you're, if your center is going to be Jake Andrews, he's gonna be a plug and play because he knows the offense. Absolutely you can say, hey, you're gonna handle this. You're going to call it and think about it like this. As a quarterback, right, you take all the, that responsibility off my plate. I'm looking at safety rotation, I'm looking at leverage of, of, of corners. I'm the inside technique, outside technique is one soft, is one, is, is one uptight playing. You know what, what are all these indicators? How wide are the linebackers? You know, what's, where's somebody's eyes? What are somebody's hips? So I'm doing all that while Jake is, is directing the traffic. All I got to do is hear Jake directing the traffic. Now as a quarterback, I know, hey, my left side I'm taking care of, I'm taking care of in the A gaps which are right next to the center, between center and guard and, and I'm taking care of, to my left side as a quarterback. I'm hearing all that as, I'm, as I'm seeing coverage and then I know, okay, this, this, this outside linebacker, if he comes, I'm Hot. Boom.
Radio Host Ron
That's it.
Sports Analyst Clint
Snap the football. Now I know where I'm coming from. There's none of the, I'm responsible for everything. And, and that's what the, again, the, the, the, the pinch that they're in, guys, is that, and you mentioned it right there, Ron, do you, do you punt on asking CJ Stroud to be Tom Brady from a pre snap perspective?
Radio Host Reggie
Yeah.
Sports Analyst Clint
And let somebody else do it because you know he plays better. Right. I agree with you, Ron. But, but, but that's what they're gonna do. Do you do that or do you go, nope, we're gonna run this system and CJ's gonna have to, CJ's gonna have to grow and, and develop and mature to be able to do these things right. It, that's the guys, that's, that's the quandary that the Texans are in right now is how do you, how do you handle that? And it seems like given what they continue to say, it seems like it's, it's going to be the hard headed route of damn it cj, you got to figure this stuff out.
Radio Host Ron
Well, I think also there's something to be said though, because I understand what you're saying here. There's something to be said though for if you want to get better, especially towards your stated goal of getting, or at least the implied goal of getting bigger beefier on the offensive line and been able to move folks in order to help you run the football, you would opt for Keelum Rutledge at center versus Jake Andrews. So there's also this added question of as you're talking about the possibility of letting your center ID things. Well, what happens if your center is indeed the rookie guy and has not played in this system either even if he's not a rookie or even if he's a rookie now, even if you're talking about it next year, the eventual plan is for Keelan Ruther to be the center of this team. And so there's going to be a point where he has to be the guy who IDs. Except would you not want CJ Stroud in that circumstance as opposed to Keelan Rutledge?
Sports Analyst Clint
Great, great point, Reg, because I, the, the, I don't have the answer to that question precisely. But back to the question Ron and I were just talking about from a standpoint of what do the Texans do? Right. That is an indicator that they're not going, you know, if you're going. I was just, I was just watching. It was actually Greg Cosell talking about The Titans and the Titans, and I don't know who the center is, but the Titans brought in a center that was with day ball at some point in his career. I don't remember if it was Buffalo or, or, or New York, but, but he, but he was with Daybo. And the whole point that Greg Cosell was making was they brought this sa. This, this center in to do all of the, the, to have all the responsibilities that you would like for a quarterback one day to have, but he's going to have all the responsibilities because they want to play fast now. They don't. They want to take all the pressure off of Cam Warden and let him play free now. Right. That was the whole point. And so if to your question or to your point you're making about Keelan Rutledge, them saying we're going to draft a guy that's never played center because he's physical and we're going to ask him to potentially play center and he's going to be a rookie in this league tells me that the direction that they're going is cj. They're going to say, cj, you got to figure this stuff out and you've got to, you got to find a way to play at your best with all these responsibilities and we'll see how that works out.
Radio Host Ron
No wonder you don't remember dude's name. His name is Austin Schlotman.
Sports Analyst Clint
There you go. Slotman.
Radio Host Ron
You could have given me 30,000 guesses. I wouldn't have gotten a Schlotten off
Radio Host Reggie
the top of my head. Oh, Schlotti.
Sports Analyst Clint
Yeah, he is. He is. Supposedly. Well, the other reason I might not remember him because I, I don't know how highly regarded he is from a, from Pro bowl perspective or anything like that. I could be wrong. But, but yeah, like he's, you know, he, they're pretty much saying I believe in, in Tennessee is, you know, we're going to allow Cam Ward to play fast and, and, and to play free. And the way. One way we're going to accomplish that is our center is going to responsibility at the line of scrimmage.
Radio Host Reggie
Well, one way we're going to accomplish our goal today is him. I'm good. One way we're going to accomplish our goal today is to have you text Radio THON 26 all one word Radio THON 26 to 71777 and you can donate there. Don't forget, go to sportsradio610.com as well. Episode: Did the Scheme Change Make Stroud Struggle More?
Date: July 3, 2026
Hosts: Sean Pendergast & Seth Payne (with guest analyst Clint Sterner)
Guest Analyst: Greg Cosell (NFL/quarterbacks film analyst)
Main Theme: Examining how offensive scheme changes for the Houston Texans have impacted quarterback C.J. Stroud’s performance, and the broader implications of scheme flexibility for quarterback development.
This episode digs deep into C.J. Stroud’s struggles following offensive scheme changes in Houston, focusing on the shift from a Kyle Shanahan-style offense to a New England Patriots approach. The hosts—alongside Clint Sterner and a featured clip from Greg Cosell—debate whether the increased mental demands placed on Stroud are beneficial or detrimental, and what solutions might exist to get the best out of him moving forward.
“When you have to make that change…it slowed down just his whole processing... and I think there were times where I thought he was indecisive playing the position and therefore was not as anticipatory as we saw him in his rookie season.”

“The advantage you have is you can be as complicated and multiple as you want because these guys…can handle it. It varies per quarterback. It’s not damning…you simplify.”
– Clint Sterner (07:06)
“Is it a good idea to continue this New England system…and say, ‘nope, in our system, our quarterback does this’? Or is it better to say, ‘hey center, you handle protections’?”
– Clint Sterner (08:32)
