As we are rolling through here on the Reggie and Ron radio thon our second year doing this and we are looking to blow through. We almost raised 30,000 last year. We're looking to blow that out of the water and shout out to our most recent Dina, Donna Douglas and the anonymous person who just. Who just put in a nice amount for.
Ron
So you're not gonna shout out Otis?
Reggie
I didn't. Oh did I miss Otis?
Ron
You ain't talking about Otis, Avery, Otis,
Reggie
all them Otis, Mary, we got a lot of folks on there. I just gone the next five. There you go. Otis. Otis, you know, be honest with you.
Ron
You know I brought him up.
Reggie
Reggie, Reggie has some words about you talking about. I Don't know. We still made Otis.
Ron
I really, truly didn't, John. Like, I feel like there's some names, right?
Reggie
But John, clearly, you know, this Otis isn't just made. This ain't an Otis. That's. There ain't. There's not a two, there's not a three. Hell, there ain't a four.
John Harris
Really starts.
Reggie
Otis is Otis.
Ron
You got to respond on the text
Reggie
live and up there. 7, 1, 3, 6. I would guess Otis is a 60 something.
Ron
7. 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 10. If you are willing, Otis, please text it and let us know your age because I am just fascinated because we're on the show.
Reggie
Hughley seems to believe ain't no way Otis ain't 28. All right, I'm just telling you like we, we all, like. I don't know what you do. What kind of game you sitting here. Otis ain't 28 unless he's Otis Jr. And he wouldn't be going. He wouldn't be going by Otis. He would. He would. He would cop that middle name or just be Mike.
Ron
Well, I was about to say he go by OJ but then I was like, I feel like people don't go by O.J.
John Harris
no more.
Ron
I feel like that one's dead in the water.
Reggie
Otis in their 20s or 30s today. Nope. Just like if you saw somebody named Adolf roll through there.
Ron
Yeah, that one.
Reggie
We do know they're in their 90s where they are. Yeah, they don't make those no more.
John Harris
All right,
Reggie
John, I gotta hear it. Top five. We've had a lot of people throw out theirs. I've seen House Party roll through. Ocho, who is a big. Ocho's got a couple mine in there. Ocho is a big one. He's got Love Jones. Thin line between love and hate. That lady was crazy waiting to exhale. Boys in the Hood and boomerang just like yours. What is John Harris's top five black movies?
John Harris
Okay, so I've got some honorable mention here.
McDonald's Announcer
Okay.
Reggie
This is lovely.
John Harris
All right, so this, this one goes back. I'll do my little story about this one because I got a shout out to Bay City Black Cats in. In high school, Bay City. Bradford Smith played there. Like Bay City had all these athletes, man. So we played them for the first time my junior year in high school. And, you know, we were a bunch of dudes, you know, doing like power layups and slapping the glass and stuff like that. And so Bay City would come in and, man, they had dudes doing windmills. They had A seven foot high jumper. I mean they had some bad ass dudes. So we told our, we told our, our videographer who had taped the game. We're like, look, don't tell coach, but we want you to film pregame. Their pregame, not ours. Film theirs so we can watch it. So they come out of the locker room and they are singing the song from school days, but they made it their own. And I was like, okay, now I got, I didn't know what it was a reference to, but I thought it was kind of badass the way that they kind of went around. They were kind of like mimicking the movie, which I realized later once I saw the movie. So I got to put school days on there. An honorable mention. Do the Right Thing is a fantastic, fantastic movie. It is not for the faint of heart, but I, I just, I love that movie. I thought John Turturro was fantastic. Girls trip actually goes an honorable mention and you're going to see why in just a second. And then this is one that doesn't get mentioned a lot. Now this is one of those movies that probably hasn't aged well, but back in what, a preface? Yeah. Back in the 80s, Robert Townsend's movie Hollywood Shuffle.
Ron
Oh yeah, that's a good show. Good shout.
John Harris
It is one of the fun. I, I swear I have never laughed at a movie more than I did. And I watched that thing when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. Like I mean, Hollywood Shuffle. So I put that in honorable mention too. So five going to one. And you guys could tell me. I, I think, I think these all qualify number five. Stomp the yard. I have, I did not expect that. Did not stop, Stop the yard.
Reggie
It was John. I'm not going to lie to you. In the last month I have watched the Chris Brown dance scenes at the beginning where, where they're in the club and they're crump.
State Farm Announcer
Oh wow.
John Harris
I did not have that on the bingo card.
Reggie
Let me put my feet up. Let me listen to this list.
John Harris
Okay, so, so I, I'll be honest. I was, you know, I didn't realize Chris Brown was in that movie before I saw it. And I didn't know much about. I heard, I'd heard Chris Brown. This was, this was before YouTube in a sense. So I didn't really know about Chris Brown. And so he does that dancing. I paused it. I was like, who is this? I go to IMDb and like, oh, it's oh, it's Chris. Oh, oh my God, it's Chris Brown. And then, of course, you watch the movie, you know what happens to him. But I, I, I love that movie, man. I, I had a buddy of mine, he actually lives in. I think he still lives in Sugar Land. Bruce Struthers. I know this can sound weird, but at Brown University, we did. We did have a black fraternity. He was in it. And they would do. They would do stomp shows. And I used to love to see them perform. And so I was like, okay, stomp. The R is number five.
Carvana Announcer
Wow.
John Harris
Okay, this, this one probably is going to be higher for a lot of people, but Coming to America is maybe the most quotable movie there's ever been.
State Farm Announcer
Correct.
Reggie
It's number one in my mind.
John Harris
I mean, it might be the most quotable movie. What is that Velvet?
Reggie
Damn shame what they did to that dog.
John Harris
Oh, my good. I mean, like you guys said, it's not the. It's not the one that jingles. It's the one that folds.
Ron
That's right.
John Harris
You know, Eddie playing autumn characters and one of my, One of my favorite parts. It's a long story, but one of my friends in high school, he probably could have been one of the family. One of the family of Soul Glow. And so when. When they get off.
McDonald's Announcer
When they get off.
John Harris
When they get off the couches, that's one of the funniest. That's one of the funniest scenes because we, we used to make fun of him for that. So coming to America is number four now number three. It has a little story, too. My quarterback, my last few years of coaching, my quarterback ended up playing at Florida A and M, which is a HBCU. So they come up to play NC A&T in Greensboro, and I live just outside of Greensboro. And I was like, oh, this is cool. I get to. I get to go see him play. I wanted to go see him play. I had never been to an HBCU football game ever. And so I go, and it's a decent crowd on hand. And so it's getting out, you know, down here, halftime, I'm hungry. And they got Bojangles down at concessions. I gotta get Bojangles because I had had them ready to go. And we get to halftime, it hits zeros. Ain't a soul moved. Like, nobody.
Reggie
Oh, yeah, it's the band.
Ron
Nobody.
John Harris
That's the game. I'm like. I'm like, what the hell's going on here? And then all of a sudden, the anti band comes out and puts on a flipping show, and I'm like, okay. And then they were Done. And then everybody went to the concessions after that. And so then I talked to my quarterback after, and he goes, oh, shoot, coach, that's nothing. He goes, last week, we locked the referees in the locker room. And fam. You had an hour halftime. I'm like, oh, my gosh. So at number three is drumline.
Ron
Good call.
John Harris
Yeah, it's. I mean, you know, I love it except for the bass drum. You know, guy on my side ends up, you know, winning that. I hate that. But either way, I thought Nick Cannon was fantastic. It was. I just, I love, I love that. That movie in the HBCU band experience is one I think everybody should experience. Any college football fan, just a fan in general. The show that is put on is just. Oh, I, I was, I was floored. I was floored. And that's why, like, on my bucket list is to go to Southern and Grambling down in New Orleans.
Reggie
There you go.
John Harris
Number two. It will. Boy two, one and two. I actually went back and forth on this during the break. And number two. I'm gonna put boys in the hood. Good call.
Reggie
Always a stop on tnt.
John Harris
Yeah, it is. That is. Oh, man, it's such a. It's. I love everything about that movie. Cuba Gooding Jr. Everything. Did he have.
Ron
You were running from somebody. You stopped in the alleyway just because they. Not around the corner. Get your ass home.
John Harris
Yeah. I mean, you know, Ricky, he, you know, he's so fast.
Home Depot Announcer
Yeah.
John Harris
You know, I mean, you saw the football clip and, you know, I was all about that football clip. At first. People told me it was Rocket Ishmael, and I was like, oh, cool. But it ended up not being him in that football clip. So, you know, I was. But it's the movie itself just, it, it opened my eyes to, like, wow. I, I, you know, I grew up in, In Rich and Rosenberg. And, you know, we saw some things, you know, we were a. We were a kind of a mixed environment. Mexican, black, white, rich, Rosenberg, but not inner city life. And that just really kind of opened my eyes to what that was like. And just at that point in the 90s, the gang culture. And so when I go out to LA and I'm driving someplace in la, my daughter being out there, and I'll see like, you know, Slauson Boulevard. It's just always kind of. You're like, oh, wow, okay, that's, you know, I think boys in the hood at that point, Cuba Gooding was. I mean, I thought he was, I thought he was tremendous.
Reggie
I wouldn't got them. I would I would get them marbles. The things that Furious had to

John Harris
And then number one is boomerang. When you think of the cast of Boomerang between Chris Rock playing the, the small part that he did that he played, I mean Eddie, I mean Martin Lawrence is.
Reggie
Who knew he would, he would take that and jump to where he was at that time because he was not one of the bigger names in that cast at that time that his show hadn't hit.
John Harris
Okay, but I know anybody listening, anybody including you guys have seen this movie, you know the scene that steals the movie is one of the more underrated characters and actually a few other great movies when John Witherspoon and his wife walk out of the bathroom and Eddie Murphy is like, you know, and David Allen Greer is. And they just, they can't say anything to each other and they just, and Eddie Murphy just hugs him. I oh I that that dinner scene, you know, and he's wearing the mushroom belt.
Carvana Announcer
He's got.
John Harris
You got coordinate. Marcus got coordinate. Come on, man. Witherspoon is one of the funniest. He's never the main character, but he steals the show of every movie that he is actually in. So I put Boomerang at number one. So I know there are probably a few. I know they're. I. I did. I like the best, man. I don't know why I like that movie.
Reggie
I like the best, man. That's strong.
John Harris
I like that movie. But I. You know, it was funny. I was thinking I hadn't. Was thinking about Drumline. And then when Drum line came, like, drumline comes on tnt. I'm watching it.
Reggie
It's a. Stop traffic.
John Harris
You keep. You keep it right there. Boomerang is on. I mean, it's a. It's a no doubter. I mean, it's. It's absolutely. And I had that. I had that soundtrack playing in my car for at least a year. That's another one. It's like, who's got the best soundtrack? Like, Boys in the Hood soundtrack was good. At Tevin Campbell on there. It was nice. But the. The. The Boomerang soundtrack, oh, man, that. That was tremendous. Little PM dawn at the end. I mean, it was all right, John.
Ron
If you didn't know, this hour was just. John Harris knows ball, period.
Reggie
Hey, everything, man. My man said that. That. That soundtrack and Tevin Campbell's the first one he led off with, baby.
John Harris
That's.
Reggie
That's when you know he was deep in that soundtrack.
John Harris
Yeah, that's one of my first CDs I ever got. That shows you how old I am. That was one of the first CDs ever got was Boys in the Hood. First one I ever got was Tevin Campbell. Second one I got was Boys in the Hood. So, yeah, those are. Those were in my car. And the PM dawn song at the end of Boomerang, when Halle Berry and. And. And Eddie Murphy are kind of having their moment, and Eddie Mur. And Halle Berry's like, man, I should. You should take your ass home. I was like, oh. And then they play that music like, okay, that was my wake. That was my alarm clock for like a year. I love that song.
Reggie
Hey, John, man, we appreciate you jumping on with this, man. It's always fun talking to you saying, we, hey, we had a big hour with you at a big hour here as people are helping us help the Houston Food bank, man. We appreciate you, man, and thanks for your time.
