What Henry brings to our defense, he brings his smart calmness to our defense, right? He's always in position, always exactly where he should be. So he's. You can count on him. You can put a lot on his play. He can handle things. He can play the mic and the wheel position. Very versatile guy. And Henry plays with passion and fire, man. That rubs off on other guys. Like to see him play. It's fun to watch him play and you mix him in with Aziz and Lassiter. Got some wild and crazy guys running around who love to hit, love to play physical. But Henry is guy that I feel I can always count on. Like asking guys to probably change up techniques or put him in those situations where I may want to change some things. Henry is the guy who can take the coaching well and go apply it on the field and put himself in position to make plays for him.

Aaron Raybould is pointing out that he knows them and he's much younger than Us. Yeah. Yeah. I think that the part there, though, too, when he talked about tweaking the techniques a little bit, there is an element to the Texans defense where, you know, people say, oh, they're so simple. They're so simple. Teams know what their offenses know, what they're running, but they can't do anything about it. That's the beauty sometimes of having a scheme that looks like it's simple is you can really screw offenses up by just tweaking things a little bit.

[Sean Pendergast]

That's what you're expecting this year?

[Seth Payne]

Well, no, no, no. They've already been doing that. Like, no, I think there's. They'll do more disguising this year, but like, they've been this way all along. It's that you almost lull offenses into thinking they know exactly what you're running, but all you have to do is tweak up your responsibilities or exactly just what leverage you're taking on a play. And it really. It really screws an offense up. But that's. That's where you need smart football players to be able to do that stuff.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yep. And the reason we bump in this morning with a bite about Henry Toa Toa. There's no practice yesterday. There's no Astros game yesterday. I said in my sports report I did for the fm's this morning, good day to go day drinking yesterday. There's really nothing going on except we went to the Big Three last night at Toyota center to see our friend Alex Del Barrio. That was fun. Yeah. Had a good time at that.

Lance Stevenson go off all over the place.

Yeah. Dwight Howard, like a slightly physically less impressive Dwight Howard.

He's still a physically impressive human being compared to all the other humans.

But a lesser version of himself.

His shoulders look more like softball than cantaloupes now. You know, it was. It's not. He's a. He's. He's an old man.

And kind of played like one last night, you know. So if you want to see your heroes from back in the day, look somewhat human. The Big Three, it was fun. We had a good time at that last night. But the reason we play the. The d' Amico cut on Henry Towa Toa. Henry Toa TOA signs a two year, $16 million extension yesterday. So we can talk about that deal. Certainly we can talk about the Texans defense and what that means to them, how Nick Casario, d', Amico, Ryan's have now stacked this defense. Not Just for this season but for a lot of these guys at the very least next season and for several of them including Henry Toa. Toa now beyond next season. But I guess what were your initial reactions to the deal?

[Seth Payne]

I got all excited. Reasonable.

[Podcast/Commercial Announcers]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Like nothing gets you more excited than a reasonable deal.

[Sean Pendergast]

It's a lot of traction when you do hashtag reasonable.

[Seth Payne]

Yes, yes, yes. This makes sense. I'm not overly emotionally moved by this, which is the appropriate response because it's the right thing to do.

[Guest Analyst/Reporter]

Right.

[Seth Payne]

A two year extension. So it's, it's not a long term deal. And it makes him the 30th highest paid linebacker. Linebacker in the league. 30th. So he's in the top. I think the next ranking down was 33 or so. So you know, in a league where by and large these days most teams have two starting linebackers because they play more nickel than, than their base defense. He's about halfway out of 64 teams. He's being paid like an average linebacker and if he had gone to free agency probably would have gotten paid a little bit better than this. But also if he gone to free agency might have been able to get a three or four year deal like let's say he had played exactly the same with his day this year that he did last year. So I think it makes, it makes a lot of sense for him. It's a nice, it's, it keeps him in Houston. He and his wife seem to love being here. But I think for the team, look, you're going to pay money for your high dollar items like Will Anderson and Derek Stingley. But you also, you need to have your blue collar guys there who are solid, steady and dependable and that's what Henry Towa Toa is. So it just, it made sense for both sides. I think it's, I think it's a testament to the Texans culture that a guy like Henry Towetoa especially who family is very important to him. He is that old school, wants to do it for the team, unselfish, all of that. I think he just likes playing here.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

And there are a lot of guys on this defense that just appreciate how much fun it is to be on a good defense in a good locker room and he doesn't need to be overly greedy or think about how much more he could get somewhere else.

[Sean Pendergast]

No, no. But it's a nice big raise for him like you said. I think, I do think I agree with you. I think if he had a good season this year heading into a contract year heading into free agency, there would have been some team that's looking for, you know, we see these teams all the time. Tennessee was one of those teams last year. They're just overpaying for guys that have played on good defenses or shown something. And that's what free agency is all about. Some team. If Henry Toa Toa had a solid year, I'm not even saying he needs to be a Pro Bowler. It's hard to be a Pro Bowler on this defense because they have so many of them already. You can only put so many Texans in the Pro bowl, including one at linebacker and Aziz Al Shiir. If he had a good season, though, where other teams watch him enough, he'd have made 10 million next year for sure. A season. So that's why I agree with you. I think it's a good deal for both sides, especially if you're Henry Toa Toa and you want to be here. I don't know if you saw the TikTok that his wife put up of him getting home from practice or getting home. I guess they didn't practice yesterday, but just getting home from the building yesterday, it was really cool, man. Like to see how emotional the two of them were about being in Houston for two more years on top of this. It was really. We don't, you know, back in the day, you never got to see that stuff. We get a lot more window into some of these guys private lives.

Yeah, that's good.

It was pretty cool to see that.

It was pretty cool to rely on what they told us they did. Yeah.

Here was. Here was Henry Toa Toa. I think it's interesting that they put him in front of the media. Maybe they didn't know the contract was coming. You know, normally you'd put a guy in front of the media the day after he signs a contract.

[Seth Payne]

He sounded like he didn't know it was coming.

[Sean Pendergast]

No, I know. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Like. No, I just. And I'm saying maybe media relations didn't know either. But he did meet with the media a couple days ago, the day before the contract, and he talked about his offseason preparation and coming back this year.

Man, it was a lot. It was a whole lot. I feel like I spent a lot

of time with Aziz.

I do every off season, but I was here most of the time spending Time with this training staff, with Mike Eubanks, spending time with them and then just working on footwork stuff here with Aziz. Me and Aziz spent a lot of time together this offseason and then obviously going back home working with my coach, coach Juan, working with my dad, doing some footwork stuff there. So it was like a, it's like my term, it takes a village to raise a child. So it was a whole village that kind of put into this offseason knowing what kind of years it is for me personally, but for the team collectively, like, I want to be the best player that I can be for this team. So I try to of resources that I had available to be able to make that happen, to be the best I could be. Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

I mean, the year personally, the party says part where he says what a big year it is for me personally kind of does indicate that maybe he didn't know that yesterday was gonna be the day it was coming to fruition, you know, or at least he's playing coy about it.

Right.

And no. And he, it's, you know, like, yeah, right. The contract is the contract and this is a big year for me. And he kind of quickly brushed by that. I think that the, I don't think it was because he had an interception the day before in practice.

[Sean Pendergast]

Can you imagine? That was the tipping point.

[Seth Payne]

I don't know. It was a good play. It was a good play.

But I feel like, I feel like with CJ which is one of the follow up questions you have to. This deal is okay, another, another Texan gets paid and extended. Is CJ possibly going to be one of these guys we hear about. I do feel like with CJ

could be a part of the way the team is looking at him and watching him operate in the off season and kind of watching him in these first two weeks where the most encouraging thing for me about CJ is that I've heard him at least once and I think twice talk specifically about his involvement in the pass protection because that's really what this defense, that's, that's a huge part of just what this offense is, is the quarterback being sure that it's as like get it. Making it as easy as possible for the O line to block things up by getting the protection right. And that tells me that he, he spent a whole lot of time in the off season learning exactly how to operate that part of the offense. And it's a lot like any, any coaches. I remember the first time I really started learning about offensive pass protection. Offensive line, pass protection and being kind of grudgingly admitting, like, okay, these offensive linemen are smarter than I've been giving him credit for. This is way more. This is way more stuff than I'm paying attention to in a football game when I'm a defensive lineman and as a quarterback, sometimes to really dive into that, it's not just like, oh, okay, I got a. I've got a. I've got a pretty good notion of what's supposed to be going on. You got to become almost like an O line coach and understand the protection,

[Sean Pendergast]

I guess, who's left of the Texans. We'll, we'll, we'll go through the defense here and how they've locked these guys up. I guess the only other extensions I could imagine happening before the season with the Texans would be, I could see a C.J. stroud extension. I think it's a coin flip right now as to whether we see that or not. But Nick Casario went on Rich Eisen yesterday and again repeated what he'd said in the press conference and on our show, which is that there have been productive conversations. And I guess on defense, the only starter that's not under contract beyond this season is Tommy Tokiai right now. Everybody else on that defense is under contract for at least two more seasons. And then there's several that are under contract, including Toa. Toa Jalen Petrie, Reed Blankenship, Stingley Azeez, Will Anderson.

Beyond 2027, Tommy Togi might be kind of the dividing line for what the Texans can and can't do right now or what they're willing to do in terms of spending a boatload of money on good football players that you gotta, you gotta try to keep as many of them around as possible, but you gotta make some hard decisions to say goodbye to some guys. If you're Togei and his agent, you're looking at how well he played last year and how much defensive tackles get paid and how much teams are willing to pay guys in free agency to just fix. The Texans are playing like five different teams this year that have spent good money on at least one really good defensive lineman to try to fix their defense. The Bengals spent money on three free agent defensive linemen to try to fix their defense.

Traded for Dexter Lawrence.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Right.

[Seth Payne]

Well, I'm including Dexter Lawrence in that. Right, Right. They're paying a lot of money. Right. So that might be the tough one, is that I think the Texans could love Tommy Togi, but also be looking at him and thinking, man, if we can get him to a really reasonable deal right now. That's a discount. That's a good bargain. But we also understand that he, he might see that man, this is a potentially a 20 million per year plus guy.

Yeah, he might. It might have to be a situation like we just heard Henry saying where he just loves playing here. You know, he really like he's flourished here. This is where he became a guy who could be worth something like that. So they've done a really good job of putting this defense together. Here's one more from Henry Toa Toa, I know you like this one. The other day, he had a bad game against the Raiders last year. That was the one game Aziz missed where Henry had to have the green dot on his helmet. So he had a lot on his plate that game and had some rough snaps in that game.

It's probably one of the toughest times of my life. I think Tampa was a hard one for me and then obviously the Raiders game was a hard one for me. But I think to those two games, it was just like digging deep on finding who I truly am as a player and as a man. You know, throughout my career I've had bad plays, but I never had bad plays like that. So being able to chin check myself, look myself in the mirror and be like, am I gonna fold? Am I gonna give up? Or am I gonna fix what's happening in front of me and go out and be the player that I know that I can be. So I think those two games, specifically, it helped me develop to be able to be the better linebacker that I needed to be and the better man that I Need to be, because, you know, you hate giving up stuff like that. And whenever you get punched in the mouth, it sucks. And, like, it honestly just gave me the time to look in the mirror and was like, all right, Han, what are you gonna do about it now? Like, what are you gonna do? You either gonna fold up or you gonna go out and play some good ball. So I'm super grateful for it. I tell my parents and my wife this all the time. Like, I'm so grateful for hard times. I love hard times because it doesn't do nothing but help me grow.

That's a good cut. When he said chin check himself, he would have gotten extra credit. If you said, I gotta Ken Giles myself and really see if I'm tough enough to.

That would have been a nice homage to Houston sports right there.

You know, I've always been very gentle with him when it came to that missed tackle versus this is Baker Mayfield, because I made this, a similar mistake on a blitz when I was a young player.

Well, you know what somebody pointed out to me yesterday? They went back and watched that game and they brought up the plays that they thought I was talking about. I totally screwed it up in my mind. I had a bad play where I allowed myself to get held and missed a tackle on a Boomer Siason scramble. I got like, they should have been holding, but I, as a defensive line coach, used to tell me, you allow yourself to get help. But though the blitz was on a. On a running play where I came too wide and made the same mistake that Toa Toa did on. On Baker Mayfield, but I missed a running back.

Was it on somebody as slippery as a Boomer Esiason that play?

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. So the. I think the biggest thing about. There were another. There was another play in the Bucks game, too, where it was.

[d' Amico Ryan]

He.

[Seth Payne]

It was a breakdown in discipline, in where he was positioned in the play. And I think that, like, in learning from that, like, he's a young player that learned from it and became better. And then I think likewise after the Raiders game, I think he learned from that and became better. It also helped get Nazeez Elshire back. And I think there's. You know, he's a guy that has done a lot in his first three years to become a much better player than I expected him to be. After his rookie year, he changed himself physically. He's just steadily taken step after step after step to become a more solid linebacker. But I think the, like, the price tag is right for him. This Is this.

This one makes a whole lot of sense. And it's also. I think there. Look, there are guys on this team, on this defense that are getting paid well, but who also don't have contracts that prevent a rookie from taking their job sometime in the next couple years. It's still a competitive situation at a lot of the spots on the defensive line, even defensive tackle. This is where they've got so many defensive tackles right now. So if they. If they can't retain Tommy Togi, they've got other guys that are, like, scratching and clawing to be the next Tommy Togia.

[Sean Pendergast]

It is wild, man, that they've got this thing locked down for. To have this many good play. Like, you know, back in the day, Bill o' Brien would lock guys down, but they were below average football players, you know, and more on the offensive side than the defensive side. He kind of let the defensive side go to hell in a hand basket at the end. I was doing that this morning, too. I was watching old Bill o' Brien press conferences around the Jadevion Clowney franchise tender contract dispute. Yeah, boy, that's interesting to go back and watch.

O', Brien, like, hey, we want him here. You know, he just needs to come in.

He's doing the things you're talking Southern Bell, o' Brien come in and sign the tender.

Shady McCoy was critical of the Texans signing Clowney because he said, hey, they're already a great defense. What they need is help on offense, which, like, yes, the umbrella statement there is good. I think there's two things that I have issues with there. It's like. It's like, okay, okay, they're already a great defense. Does that somehow mean they can't be a better defense?

[Sean Pendergast]

$5 million, right?

[Seth Payne]

It's a bargain deal into the amount that you can get out of him. If you look at the production of the guys that they had in Danico Autry and Derek Barnett last year and the number of snaps they played genevion Clowney for, less money can give you more production than both those guys combined like that. It is. It is an awesome deal. For. For. If you're comparing this defense this year to the Texans defense last year. No, they. They had backup defensive ends that were really valuable and were a big part of the success of that team. So they needed to do something to be sure they had that just to get back to where they were last year. And then Clowney, for the price they're paying is a really, really good deal.

Well, it's almost like, yeah. Like as if paying a guy $5 million, $5.5 million base salary somehow precludes you from doing anything on the offensive side of the ball.

After C.J. gardner Johnson was let go, about him abdicating his responsibilities on the field and really big and harmful plays for the Texans defense. Pointing fingers in the locker room. All of this stuff.

Yeah, pocket watching. Other contracts. Other contracts. We kind of assumed it was probably Jalen Peters.

Yeah. If those stories are true, how come this coach hasn't spoke up about it? That's more of an argument that it was. That it was true.

If a coach is going to speak up about something like this, usually coaches don't say a damn thing.

If d' Ameco felt like there was errant reporting out or something, he might say, hey, you know what? It wasn't bad with CJ we had a great time with him and everything. It just wasn't going to work out. Like, it wasn't as bad as it's being painted out. So, yeah, they never. Nobody's ever like, oh, I can't believe d' Amico hasn't weighed in on this. No, this is precisely the kind of thing that d' Amico and other coaches wouldn't. Wouldn't weigh in on. Right. The other part. All right, after starting 03. The quote, after starting 03. So how can it possibly be on one person? All right, first of all, straw man. Nobody's claiming that any football game is ever about one single person. Like we talked about earlier with Shady McCoy. Yeah. There's multiple areas that you have to address. But.

how on earth can you sit there and say, oh, we're 03, but it's somehow it's my fault. C.J. gardner, Johnson, they went 133 after you were gone. This is a bad look for you. And trying to say that it wasn't about you when they went on a 133 run after they let you go. Yeah, they were a better team. Look, correlation is not causation and whatnot. But since you're the one who's bringing it up. Yeah, things got way better after you were gone. The situation, how they handled me, it just wasn't respectful. All right. Now this is the thing. I don't know who gave DJ Biennium some of the info about what happened in the locker room. You don't know if that came from players, coaches, equipment, staff, whatever it might be. I felt like as far as the team and how they released them and everything, it just made sense that they released them when they did and they would go on to have great success on the defense without him.

You could also tell that whoever fed it to DJ also gave very specific things in each of the games that were where fault was attributed to CJ Gardner Johnson.

[Seth Payne]

Right. And it's stuff that you wouldn't necessarily know exactly unless you knew exactly what the coverage was. Like when C.J. gardner Johnson took the route in the flat and when he was supposed to be covering Brian Thomas Jr. On that long reception in the Jaguars game, that was like, you wouldn't 100% know that that was the case unless you knew what the coverage was. So that's coming in, that's coming from inside the building. But from whom? You don't know it was the team, the players, whatever it might have been.

Yeah, the.

[Seth Payne]

But then beyond that, it's just that this is now like CJ Garner Johnson in his mind is 60 when it comes to it being the team's fault for why he was let go. You know, the Eagles didn't treat him right after they didn't choose to.

It's always. It's always the team's fault. Not.

In retrospect, I thought about this yesterday watching this audio, and I know there's a whole thing like, hey, like Deontay Johnson is the example a couple years ago. Like, I think Stephon Diggs was a guy who had issues at previous stops and he came here and I thought they got. For the brief time he was here, I thought they got the best version of voted digs a captain, everybody, that

everything that Texans fans are saying right now about C.J. gardner Johnson to Bills fans is what Bill's fans were saying to us about Stefon Diggs.

[Sean Pendergast]

Correct. Now, in retrospect, though, Stefon Diggs, prior to coming to Houston, had not been on four different teams in four different years. I listened that audio yesterday, and the further and Further away we get from it. I'm shocked that they brought him in here. I know they got him for nothing. They traded Kenya Green they were going to cut. So they did one of those deals where the Eagles are looking to unload a contract. By the way, the Eagles who resign, everybody, they give extensions, they have credit cards out through for the next six years to resign. Everybody there's made Jalen Carter the highest paid defensive tackle. They don't let guys go there. They rarely have cap casualties because their owner is so willing to do all the voidable year things that. That rich owners can do. I'm just. The further and further away we get from it. I'm shocked that he ever became a Houston Texan in the first place.

[Seth Payne]

They did. I'm not shocked because I think that's exactly. That's something that is. It was an old New England Patriots thing that I'm glad that Nick is open to, which is sign a guy like that, get him in the building like Albert Haynesworth in New England. And as soon as you realize, okay, yep, he is exactly who people said he was, then you get rid of him.

You got to be.

You got to be willing to cut ties and not continue to try to muddle through a really bad situation. So I felt like they handled that perfectly. Maybe they should have seen the writing on the wall earlier. Maybe if he had. Maybe if he hadn't gotten injured in camp, then maybe they, you know, they would have seen more of that behavior if he was out there.

This is the second year in a row now, too, where he's had an injury in a camp practice and been carted off and been pretty damn dramatic about it to the point where it looked like he was done for the year. And now all of a sudden he's back.

Yeah, he was back practicing. For those who saw the news over the weekend that, oh, my God, C.J. gardner cart it off again. Yeah, he was at practice with a sleeve on his calf yesterday.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

So, yeah. So he's. He's dishing on the Houston Texans.

[Seth Payne]

The story had also told to a Buffalo reporter. He told it to the Athletic earlier this, this offseason was that it all started when he got into it with some friend of the GMs.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Who wasn't even involved all that much with the team. And ever since. And after that. Okay, so, yeah. Okay. Again, yet another altercation, apparently where CJ Gardner. Johnson wasn't to blame.

[Sean Pendergast]

Right.

And we're not like some guy who's nameless, some guy who's not even all that involved in the team. But he's a friend of the GM. There's a good chance it might have been Cal McNair I don't like. How the hell does he know who is and isn't involved with the team all that much? Some guy who's sitting around on a golf ball. Could have been. No, we're there.

Yeah, yeah, we're at the cream park.

But we didn't get into it with C.J. gardner, Johnson.

No, but he might have just thought we were mean mugging him or something like that.

All right, let's get to headlines. Texas Texans training camp starting at 9 o' clock today, practice number eight of Texans training camp out here at the Methodist Training Center. If you are headed out here, say hello when you come scurrying in with Everybody else at 8 o' clock for your first come, first serve seating. The big news yesterday, no practice yesterday, but there was Texans news. Henry Toa Toa signs an extension, linebacker signs an extension with the Texans. It'll keep him here through 2028, a two year extension for $16 million. Towa Toa was heading into a contract year and now the Texans have virtually every piece of their starting defense. Tommy Togi, the only one not under contract beyond this season. Here was d' Amico Ryan's earlier this week on what Henry Towa Toa brings to the Texans defense.

[d' Amico Ryan]

When Henry brings our defense, he brings his smart calmness to our defense. Right. He's always in position, always exactly where he should be. So he's, you can count on him. You can put a lot on his play. He can handle things. He can play the mic and the wheel. Very versatile guy. And Henry plays with passion and fire. Man, that rubs off on other guys. Like to see him play. It's fun to watch him play. And you mix him in with Aziz and Lassiter. Got some wild and crazy guys running around who love to hit, love to play physical. But Henry is guy that I feel I can always count on. Like asking guys to probably change up techniques or put him in those situations. Where I may want to change some things. Henry is a guy who can take the coaching well and go apply it on the field and put himself in position to make plays for it.

[Seth Payne]

This is a deal that it's very, very reasonable. It makes sense for both sides. I think you have a solid steady off ball linebacker that does exactly what you want him to do. And as part of a great defense where you can't pay everybody like they're an all pro and you can't have 11 all pros on there. At some point the Texans are going to have to make hard decisions on who they can and cannot keep. It might end up being Tommy Togi. Tommy Togiai is at a point where he played really well last year, but it was kind of a. He kind of just a surprise unveiling to the league. He wasn't even on the game day roster to begin the season.

[Sean Pendergast]

He was inactive for the first two weeks.

[Seth Payne]

And he plays a position where as a free agent he could make. He could be making 20 plus million per year and still be, you know, like right around the 20th highest paid defensive tackle in the league. So that I don't.

[Guest Analyst/Reporter]

[Seth Payne]

That's going to be an interesting one. If they are. If they extend Tommy Togi before the season begins, that would be a surprise, a very pleasant surprise. But I'm just. I think it might be.

[Sean Pendergast]

But you think he gets paid in that range, huh? He could. On the open market.

[Seth Payne]

Oh, I mean, well, 20 million isn't that much anymore. Yeah. Like the guys that John Franklin Myers made 21 million in free agency.

[Sean Pendergast]

But you think he'd be well that well thought of around the league.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

That's interesting. Yeah, that's. And Togi is a guy you feel like is going to maintain that level of play. Like he just seems like a very. I mean d' Amico's described him the most consistent guy on the team.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah. Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

And I think. Well, there's a. There's a part of Togei where I think there's. People underestimate just how quick and explosive he is and they underestimate how much of an impact he has in the passing game because he's. He does a great job of pushing the pocket and a lot of things that don't show up as sacks or anything, they just. And even sometimes don't show up as a pressure, but it's because they flush the quarterback out of the pocket and that's where Danil or Will gets a sack. I mean if you go back to some of the biggest and most critical plays for the Texans last year, the interception at the end of the Chiefs game, that was Tommy togei hitting Patrick Mahomes as he threw the ball. Likewise the pass breakup in that Chiefs game Lassiter had in the end zone.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

That was slightly under thrown. And that was Togey. I hit and Patrick Mahomes.

[Sean Pendergast]

I'm 100% with you on Togey. I'm just really curious. I was surprised. Like that exercise Jeremy Fowler does where all the GMs vote on things. He didn't get a vote. I was a little surprised. Like, nobody put him in the top 10.

[Seth Payne]

Nobody knew about him. Well, that's really. Yeah, yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

But that was after this season. They did those fights.

[Seth Payne]

I know, but he played. He played the back three quarters of the season. Yeah. And he also, you know, he doesn't have gaudy numbers or anything. And they rotate everybody. Yeah. I think it wouldn't surprise me at all if somebody really identifies him as like, oh, yeah, and shells out. This is a guy. Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah. That's interesting.

[Seth Payne]

Ed Oliver makes 17 million per year.

[Sean Pendergast]

Right.

[Seth Payne]

Signed that deal a couple years ago.

And Ed Oliver has gone like he had a slow start to his career in the build, but he's not like one of the superstars of the league.

You and I are on the same page as to what Tommy Togia is as a player. I'm just. The league is so haphazard with how they evaluate these guys sometimes that are play these positions that aren't measured on numbers. So we'll. We'll see, I think.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, but some of that haphazardness, though, comes with guys where they're not big marquee names and they're like that defensive tackle position. Yeah. Especially is the kind of place where that happens.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah, yeah. No, I know. Astros, Padres this weekend starting tonight. So a little west coast baseball. I like when they put the west coast series on the weekends.

You know, they don't have to worry about getting up at five in the morning and haven't watched till midnight. Renell Blanco, big start for Renell Blanco tonight. Not that he's in any jeopardy of getting pushed from the rotation because they're just. They don't have a lot of guys right now they can trust. But Renell Blanco against Robbie Ray, who I know that was a name that was kind of tossed around at the trade deadline that might be out there. Robbie Ray's got 10 wins on the season, but Renell Blanco has been very hit or miss since he's come back. This is kind of a big start for Dana Brown, this Rene Blanco start, because no pitchers picked up at the trade deadline. Those are your headlines, by the way, the ESPN poster, the graphic for that game last night was so funny like that. They're putting up there promoting the hall of Fame game. They had Carson Beck and Kenny Pickett on there in like the QB1 pose on the poster. Yeah, I'm like, oh, yeah, that's gonna put asses in seats. It's the hall of Fame game on ESPN or NBC. I guess it was.

All right. Remember when Pickett was so put out that he wasn't being treated like a superstar in Pittsburgh?

Yeah. He's now been put out by about four different teams.

Did he request a trade or demand a trade? I think he did, yeah. That's the problem with this now that everybody's so desperate for quarterbacks that all these guys in a previous generation would have been a fourth round pick as a quarterback. Now they're first rounders and they expect to be treated as such. Sorry, Kenny. You're starting in the hall of Fame game.

I'm calling him Texans Clowney 2.0. We're going to go back through some of the escapades of Texans Clowney 1.0. Do we think the new, mature Clowney would be caught in any of these situations that the old Clowney got into? We will have that for you coming up next. But here was d' Amico Ryan's on the NFL Network with Jane Slater and Kurt Warner a couple of days ago talking about what was the phone call like that you had with Jadevion Clowney before he became a Houston Texan?

Did he pick up the call and say, coach, I got juice in me. I got a house here. I can be there when you need me. How'd it get out?

[d' Amico Ryan]

Were you on the call? That sounds about how like it sounds. Just like it went. Right. Jadavian's been working out with some of his former teammates here in Houston. And, you know, we had a conversation over this summer and it pretty much went down like that. He. It means something to him to come back to Houston and to finish his career the right way. Very similar to Daniel Hunter when I talked to him a couple years ago. He wanted to come back home to Houston and impact the city in a positive way by making a text Texans successful. So when clowning and me have that conversation, that's an easy conversation for me because I love guys who want to play, but it means more. It's bigger than just him and about him coming back. He wants to come back to take the Texans to the next level, and I love that conversation. I love everything about it. And he's been out here two days. He's already in the backfield causing havoc. So it's fun to have him. You know, the talent that he brings, he's going to get after the quarterback. And you can't have enough great defensive linemen to make quarterbacks. You can have too many.

Yeah, all right.

That was Kurt Warner saying, yeah, you don't need that many good defensive linemen. Former quarterback Kurt Warner. It was funny. Clowney, basically, Clowny was on afterwards, like right after d' Amico on the NFL Network at this very desk that we're sitting at right here. Clowney basically corroborated what d' Amico said about the.

[Seth Payne]

It was Clowney that called them initially.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah, yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

He said Clowney called him.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, that. Yeah, that's. It's. It all fits really well. And sometimes, you know, you don't want it to be one of those things where, like, oh, it's awesome because it's convenient. I like Clowney. Clowney, in the first few years after he was here, I think there's people that would say there's no way in hell they're going to sign Clowney. Even early this off season, whenever we would talk about this, or I might talk about it on a live stream or something, there was a lot of pushback. And I think if you haven't paid attention to Clowney over the last few years, it's easy to not pay attention to him because he's been on a lot of different teams, but he's just been steadily churning out impressive season after impressive season where he's still a really solid, impactful football player. It's just he doesn't really stay around long enough or he's playing for the Browns or this, that. The other thing that you really like people. When I said he had a good practice yesterday, when I said it was he put it on a clinic out there, somebody replied to me and said, he hasn't put on a clinic since college. So I don't know what you're talking about. I'm like, all right, well, you just haven't paying attention at all.

[Sean Pendergast]

Or he just doesn't like clown.

[Seth Payne]

Right, right, right. No, but I think. No, but I think that's a. There is that sentiment that I think a lot of people don't realize that no, he's, he's remained a really impactful football player since the time he left Houston. It's just that it's not, it hasn't been a defensive player of the year type performance or anything to where he's front and center of your mind if he's not in your market.

[Sean Pendergast]

No, totally. I agree with everything you just said. I think the other thing that plays into it too, and it's interesting, it's convenient that we just got done talking about CJ Gardner Johnson less than an hour ago because what were we saying about C.J. gardner Johnson? Oh, this guy's been on six teams in six years.

[Seth Payne]

Right, right.

[Sean Pendergast]

So I think when we're talking about the narrative that's out there with Texas Texan fans who maybe don't follow Clowney on a game by game basis in Baltimore or Tennessee or Carolina or Seattle or Dallas or wherever, they look at the, they look at the career history and they see that the guy's on a different team every year and they're like, well, that must be a situation where he just wears out his welcome in places. It's an easy narrative to create just based on his career path.

[Seth Payne]

And I think also that's not true. The last couple years, the. Because there were, there were always stories or something, we're going to go over some of the most entertaining ones. But also because his first couple years he was injured, it just, it wasn't going the way you had hoped for a number one overall pick. By the time he started playing really good football for the Texans, a lot of people really still didn't want to accept it because they didn't have ridiculous sack numbers. That, that was an argument we used to have. People would argue about whether Jadevian Clowney is actually really good or not. Those last couple years, years he was here with the Texans. This is a nice situation because there's none of that that you have to worry about because he's not the starting defensive tackle that you're relying on to be the elixir for the defense or the guy that turns things around or anything like that. He's a nice cherry on top of an already really good situation.

[Sean Pendergast]

It's a low risk, high reward move. It's a great move by the Texans. All right now. So just to set the tone here, as we go back through the history of Clowney, let's play a couple of the recent cuts from Clowney so that we've got to sort of internalize about how there's this new, More mature Clowney 2.0. This is Clowney on the difference between the first time he was here and now.

[Seth Payne]

I'm grown.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Yeah, man, I was a big kid at first. When I first got here, I grew up different than a lot of these guys. But I told people and I was born, you know, my dad was in jail, grew up a single parent home, man, I grew up a lot different. So I got here, was never seen Houston. I enjoyed it during my time and yeah, it was fun. I came up with some great guys, a group of guys when I got here. But coming back now, you know, I'm a vet in the locker room, a lot older, a lot smarter than I was before, you know, just enjoying it, taking it day by day.

[Sean Pendergast]

Okay.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. And it's like, I don't. He wasn't making excuses or anything. I think he was just laying it out. So, like, yeah, that was. I was immature and I had to learn something, some lessons and grow up.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yep.

[Sean Pendergast]

Here's one more from Clowney saying he was asked if there was any bitterness when he was traded in 2019.

[Jadevion Clowney]

N I, I don't take nothing personal, man. I. I always say to my El man, they pick me on the moon to play football, I can do that. You know what I'm saying? I can play football. So I ain't had no hard feelings. It was just o' Brien at the time. Me and him bumped heads and I could really understand because I was an easygoing guy. I was like, all right, whatever you want from me type of guy. At this point, especially when I'm 21 years old, 22 years old, I was just taking people's advice. Instead of really looking in the mirror, trying to figure myself out, I was listening to other people. As I got older, I started saying, just take care of yourself finally, and, you know, and it's gonna work out for you. And I started doing that when I left here. That's how I think I lasted eight more years in the league. Start taking care of myself and, you know, developing my game and having fun with it.

[Seth Payne]

That was, you know, it's interesting though too, because he starts off when he's talking about how he was immature and there were things that he didn't, you know, would do differently now, et cetera, et cetera, all the classic stuff. Yet at the same time, it was Bill o' Brien who had issues with that immaturity. I feel like it's the manner in which Bill o' Brien probably handles an immature player.

[Sean Pendergast]

Probably.

[Seth Payne]

It might not. If he was having that same, you know, talk about, I don't know, like Marvin Lewis, who is great with young, immature players and getting the best out of them, he might feel a different way in. And it's two things can be true that, yes, he did. He did. He did have maturity issues, but also, Bill o' Brien's got a pretty brusque way of dealing with.

[Sean Pendergast]

No doubt, no doubt. I just know this. I know this new version of Clowney that's here. I'm in love with this new version of Clowney here.

[Seth Payne]

You know what it is, though? A lot of it is he's the same guy. He's just kind of a big, goofy kid, but. But it. But a more mature version.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah, yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

He's got guardrails on and I mean, that's just his personality.

[Seth Payne]

Goofy in a good way. He's just got kind of a fun personality.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

And nobody's asking him to be like the alpha leader of the team or anything, but yet I think he's a guy who probably being 33 years old and staying around, being productive this long, there's probably a definite, I think, lead by example things in terms of how he takes care of his body and things like that. Sounds like he's ready to be a great teammate here. And certainly the first couple practices have been really encouraging as to what the physical tools still are. So with that in mind, knowing that this is a more mature version of Clowney than the one that we got, certainly when he got traded, but even more certainly early on in his career, the first couple of years. I've got five different things that happened with Clowney the first time. Seth. Okay, that it? Let's put this through the filter and say, would these things happen again with

[Seth Payne]

Clowney2 or did people overreact to them at the time?

[Sean Pendergast]

We can. We can talk about that, too. These are in chronological order. November 3, 2014. Headline, Jadevion Clowney likes a picture on Instagram. Faces wrath. Okay, so Clowney. This is his rookie. This is his rookie. It's an awful announcing. This is his rookie year, and apparently he was dealing with the micro fracture surgery in his rookie year.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

But apparently it was at a point in the season where he could have come back and played.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

And the article says Jadevion Clowney was too sick to play in yesterday's. Game against the Eagles. He was not too sick, however, to like a picture on Instagram. And now apparently this is a thing that's an actual issue. And it's got a tweet embedded from Nick Wright.

[Seth Payne]

I didn't realize that.

[Sean Pendergast]

Who at the time sat in this seat that I am sitting in right now. This is, this is when Nick was our morning host here, and he posted a picture of a very pretty young lady. Right.

[Seth Payne]

But it's not like she's. There's nothing scandalous about the photo. It's just a headshot. It's a headshot.

[Sean Pendergast]

She got on a, you know, kind of a sleeveless T shirt. She's very pretty. And Clowney liked it at 12:30pm which would have been about, you know, late in the first quarter of that game. And Nick Wright says, here's the picture. Post it at 12:30pm and the people who liked it, Awful look for clowning.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, I know. Boy, I wish I could go. We might have to go back through the archives and see how we all handled this. This is a show on 2014. I, I, honestly, Nick, I feel like that's kind of an old man take there. I like. Yeah, he's sitting, he's probably sitting up in the suite that the injured players sit in, or if he was at home, especially.

[Sean Pendergast]

Oh, he's in the stadium. He was in.

[Seth Payne]

He was in the stadium. The sick part was where I couldn't remember. Yeah, but like, okay, I don't know. It's a commercial break or there's nothing going on. He's scrolling through and there you go. Did you. Were you afraid that Clowney wasn't offering up his strategic advice on the headset? Yeah, like, I was contributing to the

[Sean Pendergast]

game, giving Romeo Cornell advice on what he's seen.

[Seth Payne]

I mean, yeah. Would I advise that he do it? No. But he's also a young single guy. It's just like, all right. Oh, no. The 21 year old is liking a picture of an attractive woman on Instagram.

[Sean Pendergast]

This story was such a big deal that Tom Mahan, the Philadelphia Daily News writer, devoted part of a column to it under the headline, in Houston, linebacker proving to be a Clown.

[Seth Payne]

Oh, no.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah. So Philly was coming after him. All right, so A, did we overreact at the time? It sounds like yes. And at least Nick did. Yeah, right. Nick Wright. And B, do you think this is something that Clowney 2.0 would do if he's sick for a game or he's injured, he's up in the booth he's on there liking Instagram, remember?

[Seth Payne]

You know what? I think? If he. Okay. I don't think he would like you just understand. All right, you know what? Yeah, I get. People make a big deal out of this stuff. He knows that.

[Sean Pendergast]

So married now with kids.

[Seth Payne]

Well, and he's also. He's not under the scrutiny because everybody's waiting for him to fail. He's number one overall pick. He's not playing because he's injured. People were skeptical. People love to claim that the only reason people liked him was because of that one play versus Michigan, which. Which is such a ridiculously stupid argument. But, like, yeah, that. I don't think it would. It would cause as much commotion.

[Sean Pendergast]

Okay. Three weeks later, November 27, 2014. We're going back through the old Clowney files here. Headline, O' Brien to check in with Dr. Air quotes, Jadevion Clowney. And for those who don't remember this, Clowney told reporters on Thursday that he had suffered a setback last week in his. I guess in his recovery from micro fracture surgery and indicated he would have a slim chance of playing that Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, it wasn't after the micro. It was just after an injury.

[Sean Pendergast]

Okay, so. So that Sunday, that was the game where Ryan Fitzpatrick threw six touchdown passes.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

So he indicated to reporters that he would. He suffered a setback, indicated he would have a slim chance of playing against Titans. So this is Clowney telling reporters this. Texans coach Bill O' Brien was not amused. Upon learning of Clowney's comments, O' Brien said, quote, I don't know, Dr. Clowney. I'll reconvene with him and see how he's doing.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

End quote. So o' Brien didn't like how forthcoming Clowney was.

[Seth Payne]

Well, he hadn't. Yeah, like, it was.

[Sean Pendergast]

Situation.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, like. And I remember the press conference. He was kinda. He was kind of taken aback at the question. He's probably in his mind thinking, who's the source? And he asked, who? You know, basically, who's your source? Clowney. Dr. Clowney.

[Sean Pendergast]

Dr. Clowney. Yeah. Would. Did we overreact? And would Clowney 2.0 disclose his medicals to media members?

[Seth Payne]

Why do you keep saying we? I don't think I overreacted at the time.

[Sean Pendergast]

I mean, we. As a fan.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, I got you. I got you.

[Guest Analyst/Reporter]

Oh, yeah.

Settle down. That I'm lumping you in with one huge group of people. Yeah. Did I? I thought at that time, at that point, nobody was, like, tired of Bill o' Brien's act. It Was still kind of refreshing. He's a hard ass and like, here. There you go.

Yeah. Clowney was not the favorite nation back then at this point.

[Seth Payne]

Right, right, right, right.

[Sean Pendergast]

He was an injured rookie.

[Seth Payne]

I don't think it was an overreaction. Like, that's a classic thing that, like. All right, it's. You know what it's an evidence of. Okay. This kid doesn't necessarily know how to operate on an NFL team. You're not supposed to be divulging your medical information and all that. Yeah. So I don't think we overreacted, did we?

Would. Would Clowney do that again? If he gets asked a question about, are you ready to play this Sunday? If he's dealing with an injury, would he be as forthcoming as he was?

[Seth Payne]

Probably not, no. Yeah. Like, again, going back to the whole, okay, liking an injury. Instagram post during a game, he's learned. He's learned what he might think it's still stupid and dumb that people react to it that way, but he knows this to avoid the issues.

All right, the next1 is March 10, 2015. Report Jadevion Clowney bitten by teammates. Pitbull.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

All right, so this is Jadevion Clowney missed 10 games the previous season with various ailments his rookie year. So Clowney's stock was not high with. With the fan base at this time. DJ Swearinger, who is also a teammate of his at South Carolina. So they go back a long ways, hanging out in the off season with each other, according to Sports Radio 610. Oh, somebody here broke that story. Clowney suffered a minor bite by teammate D.J. swearinger's dog. According to police reports, the pit bull bit Clowney on the right arm, breaking the skin. The defensive end sought treatment at a local emergency room hospital. Pearland PD was alerted to the incident by the emergency room Clowney visited. So I guess the emergency room called the police.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

To say he was bit. Okay, this is a bit of a silly one. Did we overreact at the time and would this happen to Clowney again?

[Seth Payne]

This was more of a D.J. swearinger, Jadevion Clowney combo package, I think, because those were the two guys where you felt. You felt like, all right, they might not be good influences on each other. DJ was kind of a unique individual in his own right. I remember probably overreacting to being overly impressed that Swearinger's dog's shots were up to date. That was. That was the biggest surprise to me. I was like, holy crap. Swearinger staying on top of it. Like, that.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Good job.

[Sean Pendergast]

Swearing. And then he would drive off without paying for upgrades to his car, including a Batman skin that they put on.

[Seth Payne]

He stole his own car. He was, like, 23. He was wanted for stealing his own car. Yeah, No, I think that. No, I don't think this would have been an overreaction just because it was one of those things where it became just a litany of thing after thing after thing. Who is the Rockets player who kept getting into weird situations?

[Sean Pendergast]

Terrence Jones.

[Seth Payne]

Oh, yeah. Terrence Jones. It was just every. It was always something. And so, like, even if it was something relatively minor, like, oh, it's another something. It's a car accident on the way to the. Oh, you're accused of kicking an unhoused man. There's always something.

I can't say.

Clowning never kicked an unhoused man. That we know of.

I would. I would say as far as this happening again with Clowney, I would say it definitely could, because I don't think that was Clowney's fault.

If anything, it was probably his gregariousness that got him in trouble.

You gotta be. I would hope that he asks his teammates from now on, are you a responsible dog owner?

By the way, that was probably Fred Davis that broke that story, because Fred Davis had been an old crime reporter in Beaumont. And he also broke the story about the shop jersey burnings.

Yelling at him in his driveway. Yeah. Yeah. That probably was Freddie. Shout out Fred Davis. All right, next one. This is January 6, 2016. So this is in early 2016, but it's the day of the Chiefs playoff game. That postseason headline, Jadevian Clowney inactive vs. Chiefs briefly leaves stadium right now. This got reported. It was Lisa Salters.

[Seth Payne]

Was the Salters. Oh, I've been saying to Foya. Apologies to Michelle. To Foya.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yep.

[Seth Payne]

Yep.

It was.

The game was on ESPN. It was that Saturday 3:30 game that the Texans have come to know and love and Lisa Salters reported before the game that Jadevion Clowney stormed out of the Texans locker room and left NRG Stadium after the team ruled he would not play in the wild card contest on Sunday.

[Seth Payne]

And I was on the pregame show at the time. Yeah, you were not.

[Sean Pendergast]

I don't think I was not on the pregame. I was on the post game show.

[Seth Payne]

I can't remember who was on the pregame show at that point, but I remember saying, pleading with Clowney to come back to the stadium, kind of jokingly, the Clowney, if you're listening, come back.

[Sean Pendergast]

Don't.

[Seth Payne]

Don't have it be like this. So. But then, ironically enough, after the pregame show is over, I'm walking into the stadium, about to enter the one Genevion Clowney. I was like, hey, man, what's up?

[Sean Pendergast]

Hey.

[d' Amico Ryan]

I heard.

[Seth Payne]

I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was basically like, hey, man. Like, it's like, I don't know. I went out to give my tickets to my mom. Yeah. I didn't storm out of the stadium.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah. So the. The clown. The Texans listed Clowney among their inactives following a pregame workout in the weight room. Clowney was upset about the decision, believing he was ready to play. That's the. What the article is saying. The article then goes on to say the team said Clowney left for a family errand.

[Guest Analyst/Reporter]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

He was then spotted in the stadium before kickoff by many, including Seth C. Pain.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, yeah, that was my source on that one. Jadevion Clowney. He did look. He looked genuinely confused. He's like, I don't know what's going on here. Well, that's all that. So I don't like reporters when they report emotion. Like, unless somebody specifically said like that you're describing somebody state of mind based on, you know, what you're judging their facial appearance to be. And this is why people have bad relationships.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

It's just assuming what the other person thinks.

[Sean Pendergast]

Okay. Yep.

[Seth Payne]

So who's at least assaulters? Yeah. You know what? I'm gonna. I'll describe her emotion there. She was irre. That's not even. She was irresponsible in reporting it that way.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yep.

We were just reacting to what she was reporting at the time. And I would say that Clowney, if he were hurt, would definitely bring tickets out to his family again and make sure they were taken care of.

How about this trip through the past? All right, so Lisa Salters, via colleague Kevin Seifert, reported to Seifert on Saturday that Clowney, quote, stormed out of the Texans locker room and left the stadium when deactivated. ESPN's Ed Werder reported Clowney was, quote, visibly upset with O' Brien's decision not to activate him for the playoff game. James Palmer of NFL Network said Texans players who are inactive can leave and are allowed to leave as per ESPN's Tanya Ganguly.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported Clowney left the stadium to take tickets to his family.

The Texans got blown out by the Jags 45 to 7 and defensive endeavion Clowney was asked if Blake Bortles, who had a good game that day, they

And that was the original trash can scandal because the next time the Texans played the Jaguars there were some trash cans and stuff in the stadium. The best part about that was there's no good audio of it because he said it kind of laughing as he was leaving the podium.

What do you think of Bortles? He's trash.

I don't even know what our reaction was to this. Probably laughter because that season was so bad at that point. So I don't think we even really cared that he said that. I'm guessing we all laughed about it. Yeah, I'm guessing I probably said he's right because I was never a believer in Blake Bortles. And ultimately Blake Bortles was the reason they got knocked out of the post postseason that year. They needed him to make plays in New England and he couldn't make plays. So I would say, I don't know remember what the overall reaction to that was. And Clowney was a much more popular player at that point because he had made the Pro bowl the previous year, was on his way to making it again that year and the following season. So Clowney's Q rating was a lot higher with Texan fans. I will say this, I don't think the version of Clowney that we saw two days ago at the podium would call any opposing QB trash.

He's a more mature guy.

Absolutely. Absolutely. All right, so that was our trip down memory lane with Clowney.

Three training camp winners so far that I've got, Seth, and want to see what you think about this. Jaden Higgins has taken a big step forward in this camp. I think Jaden Higgins has benefited big time from how they're handling Nico Collins. Nico hasn't been a full participant in everything out here.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

So Jaden Higgins is getting a lot of run with CJ Stroud. This is d' Amico Ryan's couple days ago on Higgins progress.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Higgins came back ready this camp. He came back ready and showed an ota. It's showing now. It's not surprising him and CJ are finding a connection because Higgins is doing a really great job of running his routes the proper way. He's playing with precision, and he's excelling at every level. Third down, he's winning, making plays for us. So, I mean, sky's the limit for Jaden Higgins because he's prepared himself the right way over the off season. And that's what is a really great example for young guys. You prepare the off season in the right way. You come to camp with the right mindset that you're going to get better. You can do that. And he's put the work in, and it's showing here at camp.

[Seth Payne]

The. The mental stuff of it, that part of it. Jaden Higgins talked about it the other day, and, you know, Nico talked about it as it relates to Jaden Higgins. There's just. There's a lot as a young receiver into this defense, offense especially, and how you're reading the defense, which leverage you're supposed to use in certain situations, your sight adjustments, all of that, it's a lot to handle while also trying to play fast. And what you hear football players say all the time, man, if you're thinking, it slows you down. So you want everything to be as automatic as possible. And I think that you saw a steady growth in that by Jaden Higgins during the season. So it would have been a surprise for me if he didn't come back and look even better at the beginning of training camp because they've had OTAs, they've had the individual sessions that they've had with CJ that he just. He looks like. He looks like he might end up being the next. Nico Collins is a guy that not drafted in the first Round, but with all those physical traits and tools and if you pair him up with a guy like let's say C.J. stroud, I mean, that was what, that was a big thing with Nico Collins. It was like he wasn't all that impressive until you paired him up with a quarterback that could get him the ball.

[Sean Pendergast]

It's probably. And yes, you're, you're making, you're making part of the point I'm about to make, which is we'll give Nico Collins a bit of a pass because this is a much more functional environment that Higgins is operating in. But in a vacuum, Higgins is ahead of where Nico Collins was in his second training camp. Granted, like you said, it was second year Davis Mills with Lovey Smith as the head coach, coming off of a season with David Culley as the head coach.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

So it's not like Nico was operating in, you know, in a great environment, but Higgins looks advanced for a second year guy.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. You know, and honestly, a lot of that goes back to CJ too. He's just genuinely operating the offense much more like the way it's supposed to be operated. And I, like we said this at the beginning of last season, it was said it before training camp that it's not, it's. There's going to be bumps in the road with an offense like this in depending on how much you want your quarterback to do. And I think the biggest part for me really is that the pre snap stuff with CJ I think he really gets it and understands now the value of it and the importance of him really being dialed in on the pass protection and everything that goes into pre snap because there's just way too much going on to just rely on your, your arm talent or making a brilliant play or something that to get by in the NFL. He just looks like a. But he looks like he's got way more command out there and that's going to help Jaden Higgins.

[Sean Pendergast]

No doubt. No doubt. All right, so training camp winner for me, number one. Number two, Kaylin Rutledge. Kaylan Rutledge. A week into camp, granted, just a week into camp, but looks like the real deal so far. This was d' Amico Ryan's with Jane Slater and Kurt Warner on where Rutledge is right now.

[Podcast/Commercial Announcers]

Keelan Rutledge is getting so much love out here. I haven't had eyes on practice for as many days as some of the other reporters. Why are people singing his praises right now?

[d' Amico Ryan]

Well, they're singing his praises because you see 66 running downfield taking a mike linebacker 15 yards downfield, like, wait, is that, is that an offensive lineman that far downfield? Yeah, that's him. So you see the feistiness, you see him shoving after the play like just a gritty old school offensive lineman that we haven't seen in a while. And that's really jumping out in our camp. And our rookie, and a rookie who doesn't play like a rookie. So it's fun to watch him play.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, the, I think the two encouraging things about Keelan Rutledge is just everything d' Ameco is saying right there. It's not just about the toughness and the grittiness. It's his ability to get to his assignment on the second level and attach to Aziz Elshire and productively block him by taking the right angles, having the right technique. And as he's gotten more comfortable snapping the football, I think, I think you're seeing more of that discipline technique that a lot of rookie offensive linemen don't have. So that's been encouraging. I think the most encouraging thing I realized yesterday as I was thinking about it was all right with offensive linemen and defensive linemen, especially interior offensive lineman and defensive lineman. I try not to be overly impressed by anything that happens before the pads come on. And then after a couple days in pads I'm looking at Keelan Rutledge and I'm thinking, oh, yep, I feel like better about him after the pads come on than I did before the pads came on. Some guys just are flat out the guys who are built for physicality. They don't look as good in no pads as some of the fancy lad athletes that don't aren't physical football players. You put the pads on and the physicality is an element. All of a sudden, oh wait, now I, now I really see why he was a first round pick.

[Sean Pendergast]

Granted it's only been a few practices and pads, but do you feel good about him having everything on his plate that comes with being a center also, as opposed to playing guard?

[Seth Payne]

Okay, this is what I'm glad you brought that up, Sean. I'm really glad you brought that up. We haven't talked about pre snap penalties at all and I think I've seen one false start by the offense and I probably missed one somewhere along the way, but it's been very, very clean. So when the center is up there and making the call, he's a part of that. But then the other part of it too is we haven't seen blown assignments that might come from guys getting on the wrong. Making the wrong call or being on the wrong page. So that part of it now is looked really, really clean so far when he's been in there.

[Sean Pendergast]

That's encouraging.

[Seth Payne]

I haven't seen the snap. You know, during OTAs and minicamp there was some errant snaps. I think there was. I think there was one that I've noticed where it wasn't like a horrendously bad snap, but it was like CJ had to take his eyes off the defense to go get it. But I think by and large, he's coming along very nicely for a guy that's only been in pads for a couple days.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah, one.

[Seth Payne]

One big test for him will be versus the Texans defense. You don't have a nose tackle right on the center, right on top of the center all that much. They play even fronts, which means that the defensive tackles are over the guards. Each preseason game the Texans play, they're facing a 3, 4 defense where they'll have a nose tackle on the center.

So it's a big league forward. And that's where he might have some issues. Just because that's the first time he's going to see a bunch of it because he's not going to see it in practice all that much.

[Sean Pendergast]

Normally in the early preseason games, they wouldn't keep the first string in there more than a series or two. If you were d' Amico Ryan's and Cole Popovich and Nick Haley, would you have Rutledge out there maybe playing a little bit extra just because he needs reps at center?

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, you know what I mean? The ones and the twos maybe against the 3, 4.

And the first two games of the season, he's going against the 3, 4 defense also.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

So maybe Dexter Lawrence playing nose tackle in the second if he's. If he wins the starting center job.

Right, right, right. Speaking of right, WR A I H T winner, number three in training camp so far. I don't know if you've picked your undrafted free agent yet. Yeah, but I pick mine.

[Seth Payne]

Okay.

[Sean Pendergast]

Mine is Colin. Right. I actually had him making the team in my last 53 that I did before training camp because I wanted to have kind of a wild take out there and I heard some good things about him. He feels like a. Definitely a cultural fit on this team. He's had a good camp. He's number 37. If you come out here, he's a corner that's been kind of running with the backups. And here are Demiko Ryan's thoughts on Undrafted free agent out of Stamford, Colin Wright.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Colin is one of the rookies who's showing up almost every day. He finds a way to, you know, get a, get a, get to get his hands on the ball in some type of fashion. Right. Whether you, he's picking the ball, whether he's playing sticky coverage and attacking the ball, getting PBUs. He's done a really great job of always, you know, showing that capability of being attached to the football. And that's a, that's a good quality to have as a corner. So he's done a really good job.

[Sean Pendergast]

It's a good quality to have as an undrafted free agent because you got to have a few plays where they want to go back and watch you on the film. Right? I mean, you got to, if you're, if you're trying to make the team, you've got to do something that cuts through.

[Seth Payne]

You got to do something. You got to show up, you got to show up. And then it's all, then it's a matter of, okay, who's he covering, what's the quarterback doing? All of that. That's where it gets tough with those guys. But they have the, it feels like every guy, when asked to name a couple of guys that have stood out to him, they'll usually try to, you know, name a few. I always feel, I feel bad when guys are asked that question. As a veteran, he's like, hey, who stuck out to you? And when you're talking about young players especially, it's like, oh man, these, like something like, there's the kid that I don't name all of a sudden is going to be sitting there in his locker thinking, oh crap, this is what

[Sean Pendergast]

I would think is that. Dude, it's 150 degrees out here. You think I'm scouting the rest of the team. I'm just trying to focus on my job. Yeah, I'm not out here breaking down the film of the other 89 guys

[Seth Payne]

out here, but they do all seem to bring up Colin Wright pretty easily.

[Sean Pendergast]

Three year starter at Stanford. Captain, you know, like he's got sort of that profile of a guy who's kind of Texans worthy.

[Seth Payne]

You know, he was the one. I can't remember. I did. They did a video on him at Stanford and it was, I can't remember what class he was taking, but it was like it made me feel like an old man. It was some Internet based one. Kalen Bullock, when he was on Blankenship's podcast, talked about, I think he said when he found out that the coach was fired there at usc. He was in a. He was in a gaming class. They were like, wait a second. Gaming class? Gaming class? Yeah, you learn about like how they make video games and everything. So it wasn't, it wasn't just like learning how to play, you know, Legend of Zelda or anything. Yeah, it was, it was more about the business side of things.

So far I had said C.J. stroud. Yeah, like honestly, I think most of the people that have been out here for at least a few practices, even in the practices where the offense didn't necessarily look that good, I think it's pretty apparent that he's operating this offense with more command. I think that the one thing that's always hard to judge in the non tackle situation is how is he dealing with muddy pockets and with pass rush, you know, the leakages, things like that. I think he's looked really good stepping up into muddy pockets, scanning the field when he runs. He's very willing to run, but it's at the appropriate time. And by and large though, a lot of that comes down to also that the O line, the pass protection when it does foul has been because, okay, somebody got beat by Daniel Hunter, Will Anderson or Tommy Togei, which is going to happen. That happens if the LA Rams are playing the Texans. That I think C.J. knows what to expect. So in the, in any pass protection, where are the weaknesses? Where are my threats? Where do I have to expect danger? I think CJ's got a better feel for that by, by being more in command of the pass protection and understanding all those dynamics. So that part so far and it's look, it's not. He hasn't taken a hit yet.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

And he hasn't faced the adversity that he faced at times last year. He hasn't thrown a pick that he has to rebound from. But compared to camp last year, it looks a lot different.

He's easily what I get asked about the most either. You know, friends texting that know we're out here, people that you see out and about that you know are Texan fans. I've been telling them I'm encouraged by what I'm seeing with CJ Stroud.

[Seth Payne]

I was sitting next to a woman at the Big three game last night who's she's a season ticket holder, but she admits that she's a casual football fan. You know, she's not all dialed in on everything. And she said she was concerned about cj. Why Sean? Because of the viral video of him walking into the stadium looking, looking like a fourth grader.

[Sean Pendergast]

Cinder block shoes and his baggy T shirt.

[Seth Payne]

Well, and then Cam Newton, Cam Newton, I guess made some comment about looks like he's out of shape. I don't know what he said specifically and what he was basing it on. He doesn't look any different than he's looked the entire time he's been here.

It's not a flattering outfit he had on, just he was so loose fitting.

[Seth Payne]

Well, but even when he's in pads or anything, he's not, I would say kind like Pat Mahomes. He doesn't like have a naturally impressive physique or anything he's at, but he's bigger than people realize or expect. A lot of it is muscle, but he's not super lean or anything. So I don't, I think, I think that analysis comes that is completely based on how has he been playing lately.

You know, if he's been playing incredible, it's like, you know, what he's a solid, sturdy guy. If he's not playing well, like, I just got. He doesn't take care of himself.

He's.

He looks like he's built in a lab.

I want to make sure we get to this before we get out, because you and I have not talked about this yet, but this is the first time I can remember that. The Texans, they've always told the media no filming stuff at certain times, no talking about the depth chart or formations and things like that. And yet there's 2,000 people here with iPhones that can film whatever they want and up until a few days ago, could post things on social media. The Texans have gotten very vigilant about this. They've got. They've got big electronic signs up saying, protect the team. Put the phones down during certain periods. They've got people in the bleachers, kind of gestapo there, like, finding people. Like, they're like, hey, you with the phone. Like, put it down. This was d' Amico Ryan's when he was asked about protecting the team from stuff being shared on social media.

[d' Amico Ryan]

It's important to protect the team, not just videos, but for us, you know, how we operate as a team. My main message is always it's about the team first. So when it comes to the videos and things that are posted, we know everyone has a. Who has a phone is media.

[Jadevion Clowney]

Right.

And we don't. We don't want our plays getting out so other teams. Teams can study what we're doing here in training camp. That's just obvious. A lot of teams do this around the league, so it's all about the team. So if You're a true Texans fan, and you want to see the Texans succeed. You wouldn't showcase our plays to teams who don't know what we're running.

[Seth Payne]

This is probably the biggest heat check d' Ameco's had in terms of a decision made that affects the fan base.

[Seth Payne]

I don't know. You know, the thing about this was. I don't know how many people were actually upset about this other than. I just. I. Like some people are gonna be upset about it, obviously. I always enjoyed the fans being able to take those videos because I'm not allowed to, so I can watch afterwards and see. I mean, this goes back to the early 1990s, when Jimmie Johnson was watching the local TV news before the Bills super bowl and saw footage of Thurman Thomas taking a shovel pass from Jim Kelly and Jimmy Johnson thought, they haven't done this all year long, and they were ready for it, you know, and it wasn't anything they had prepared for. So, like, that's the extreme version and extreme situation I don't have. I was always kind of shocked that they did allow fans to take those videos. And I totally get it and understand why. And I would. I would also say this without giving away any information or anything. I think that there's good reason for the Texans to not. I think the Texans are going to do some interesting things this year based on what I've seen in camp, that are going to be some wrinkles that they haven't done before and that I. I can see where d' Amico's coming from. Like, we don't want to see necessarily that we have this guy in this position doing that.

[Sean Pendergast]

So I think should settle down a little bit. Well, yeah, And I think. And I would say. I don't think most fans are actually worked up about that. I think some people in the media and some people who'd, like, take the footage and maybe, you know, you know who.

You know, fans who might be worked up about it. Is it. Aren't aware of the history of something like that, and they feel like this is another New England thing that's going on.

[Seth Payne]

Right, right, right.

It feels like something Belichick would do.

[d' Amico Ryan]

Yeah.

Make sure the fans have to put their phones down.

[Seth Payne]

I don't. I tend to defend the team whenever they're paranoid about letting information leak out because it's a matter of. It's one of these policy things. It's like the military doesn't. The military doesn't say, hey, we'll just let these corporals decide what the. What the. What the secret information is or not. You know, use your own discretion on this. Like, you just gotta have. If you have a strict policy of withhold as much as possible, then you prevent fewer. More leaks.
