The official beginning of, of the 2026 Houston Texans NFL season is here. It's always training camp for me when this thing gets started. And we are live at Texans Training Camp. I am Sean Pendergast alongside the returning Seth C. Pain.

I'm super, super excited, Sean. As you know, I'm just right now in the dark where we can't, we can't see anything because the sun's not up, you see, and there's, there's, there's some new graphics. They've got a, they've got a bunch of really cool new stuff and I'm trying to figure it all out. This is horrible for radio, but listen you guys are as blind as I am. Yeah. All right. The. The medium. The medium is not the obstacle here. It's me not actually being able to see anything.

So big day. Yesterday was. Yesterday was fun. Yesterday was a lot of fun. Just because the teams do such a great job covering everything now that even the day before camp, it feels like camp has already started. Because for the players, you watch them arrive.

And you watch them walk up. Watch Kamari. Kamari walk up with kind of a swagger, kind of scary looking, holding his shoulder pads. Yeah.

He's the only one I saw carrying his shoulder pads.

He's the only one that's got the requisite hustle, Sean. That he takes his shoulder pads home.

Yeah, man. Got a little Nick Martin in him.

He sleeps in his shoulder pads. Yeah.

Some might call it fake hustle, but not to his face. No. I bet he did have it. Like, do guys. You see more guys working out in their helmets and shoulder pads in July these days?

So that is actually way more common. But CJ walking in caused a lot of attention as well. This is what I was. This is what annoyed me about all of that. Like, yeah, that's the way he walks. How's anybody not noticed that? Yeah, he's duck footed. And he walks and he walks kind of. It's not necessarily the most. Just as Patrick Mahomes has kind of a goofy walk too.

He's got a zesty walk.

A zesty walk. Yeah. Pat Mahomes is the one guy where you would never guess by his physical appearance and the actual way he walks that you would. That he's accomplishes that.

He's the greatest player of this generation.

Well, you wouldn't guess it from his stats the last couple years either, but likewise with CJ Look. So the. That that took the Internet by storm. Or at least social media.

Yeah. Not that I'm one to delve into critiquing fashion or look or anything like that, but as far as that video not doing him the best of favors, my suggestion would have been wear shorter shorts. His shorts were long and down past his knees.

[Seth Payne]

Gave him kind of a middle school appearance.

[Sean Pendergast]

You just look a little slower too when you got the baggy. Baggy shorts on.

[Seth Payne]

Whatever baggy's back. Now, I don't know if you noticed from the videos yesterday.

I know, but when you're duck fish, it doesn't do you any favors. His shoes that he had on.

Also, he needs to wear shoes that point inward, like. Like his kind of toes, but angle them in so that the toes are facing forward as he walks into.

His shoes that he had on were, like, very blocky. Yeah, they were very rectangular.

Oh, yeah.

That didn't do him any favors either, in my opinion. Now, the fourth grader thing came from the fact that he wore the backpack over both shoulders with a white.

You know what it was? It was a little taste of our own medicine because what were we saying about Bryce Young when he showed up for camp with that oversized back?

[Sean Pendergast]

That's true.

You know. True. Looking like he had a jam sport with his. So all of his textbooks jammed and

now look who's in the NFL top 100 and who isn't. Bryce Young. Yeah, 98.

We don't know for sure.

No, it was. I started to feel guilty about coming back because the Astros almost win streak, but impressive record pretty much coincides with my absence.

You missed some crazy stuff while you were gone.

Both in the NFL. Off the field, on the roads. Hashtag Shanahan and Romo.

Well, we didn't. Everybody missed the Shanahan thing. That was happened weeks ago. That happened far long before my vacation.

You missed. Missed the ninth inning of the game on Sunday. I think it was Sunday.

I mean, I didn't miss it. I actually watched the game.

You missed getting to talk about it where The Astros sent 10 guys to the plate and got one hit.

Yeah. My favorite part of. My favorite part of this stretch that the Astros are on right now, the almost win streak, is that Jeremy Pena, when they came back off of that after getting swept coming out of the break. You and I came in on Monday and we were talking about how we don't know these guys. Who are these guys? Where's the sense of urgency? And then you watch on the broadcast after they put a couple away and Todd and Julia and Jeff are talking about how Pena gave a speech about how they needed to have more urgency.

Yeah, man.

And I didn't even. I didn't even know if Pena was a listener.

I didn't know if. I didn't know if anybody had that in them in that clubhouse to give that.

I told myself this morning, all right, look, Meta, look, you know what? Medical students, medical residents, they do it all the time. They go 36 hours, right. And sure, they're 25 years younger than me and much, much smarter, but our jobs are just as important. Lives are on the line here doing

a more important job.

Oh, man. So we'll get to the Astros. They did, they did win last night, three to two. Jordan Alvarez with a ninth inning single to. To win the game for the Astros last night. So training camp starts today. Let's get to the news first because there was some interesting stuff yesterday that popped up yesterday. We got the first injury report I guess we'll call it always comes out the afternoon before the first practice. Yeah, there's some newsworthy stuff on here. I'll start with the lesser newsworthy stuff. No disrespect to E.J. speed and M.J. stewart, who are both going to start camp on the PUP list. I thought that was interesting. Just because it's. Every report we've heard about EJ Speed is that he's done for the season,

[Seth Payne]

but Pop List is physically unable to perform.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yep. This was the interesting one. Two things. A name that wasn't on that email and a name that was on that email. The name that wasn't on that email, and Brandon Scott and I talked about this for a full segment yesterday is the question we asked was what would be the most discouraging Tank Dell thing? What could be the most discouraging Tank Dell News on the first day of training camp. Mine was, if he's on the PUP list.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

Because that would be indicative that there's still something going on with him or that they're being overly cautious. Good news, Tank Dell not on the PUP list. So now the story with him becomes, what's he doing out here?

[Seth Payne]

Right. What exactly is he doing? So it doesn't mean that he's cleared. You know, it doesn't necessarily mean that, okay, he's cleared for 11 and on 11, and we're going to see that. But in training camp, the players on the PUP list count against the 90 man roster. So if somebody's unable to practice like MJ Stewart, they'll just put him on the PUP list and then, you know, at some point, if he progresses along, they can activate him to the.

[Sean Pendergast]

Could be off in two days. He could be into the start of the season.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. So the. But then. So for Tank Dell, you know, if he weren't going to practice, then they might just say, okay, we'll park him on the PUP list for a little bit, but they're not going to do that. And I think based on everything everybody's been saying from including Tank Dell immediately after the season and Nick Casario at the super bowl when he talked with us, it feels like they probably could have brought him back a while ago for full participation, but they're just being as careful as possible.

[Sean Pendergast]

Here was. This was Nick Casario. This was back on June 3rd when he was on with us and we asked him the question. This is back when Tank had not done anything in OTAs or minicamp yet. They were still being really cautious on the day after this cut. He was doing seven on seven stuff. But this was Nick on our show back on June 3, giving the forecast for Tank Dell at that time.

Yes, I would say more than likely it'll probably be in training camp. You know, we have about, I don't know, however many days left here in the spring. But there are certain things that he's able to do. He's done some things on the field, maybe separately, kind of off to the side. I think the goal is training camp, so we'll kind of see if he stays on schedule. But I mean, nobody's worked harder, nobody's had a better attitude, you know, talking about a player that hasn't played football in, you know, almost 18 months or however long it's been. But you know, his attitude, his approach, he's chomping at the bit and he's certainly anxious and wants to be out there. By the same token, we want to make sure that we're taking care of him and doing the right things and putting him in a position where he can go out there and be the best version of himself. So I would say training camp seems like a reasonable time frame in terms of his availability, in terms of next steps.

[Sean Pendergast]

And here we are. Good job, Dr. Casario. Good forecast back on June 3rd.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

Here we are in training camp and all we know is that he's not. Tank is not on the PUP list. So we have yet to see what he's going to do out here today.

[Seth Payne]

So I guess the risk is that why the PUP list gets super confusing.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. But teams would put a guy on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp so in case their injuries don't improve that they can put him on the PUP list at the beginning of the regular season.

[Sean Pendergast]

Got to miss four games.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. And they. So they don't. They don't seemingly have that concern with.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah. Yeah. Without going too deep into it. Tankdale doesn't have an injury designation.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

And that's good news. You know who does have an injury designation? Jalen Noel.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

This. Surprised.

[Seth Payne]

This was a little bit. I do. We do one every year. Sean, two years ago is Christian Harris, which if I recall correctly was classified as a minor injury. That should reportedly be no big deal by the time.

And then barely ever again.

Yep. So last year it was Joe Mixon.

Right. But there's other. There's plenty of other guys that missed the first week or so of camp with minor injuries that do come back.

But this is a surprise.

Well, in the comparison to mixing is the designation.

Yeah.

It's a non football injury.

Yeah.

So we don't know what that. That is. That could be something as minimal as he was working out with his away from the facility trainer to he was, you know, riding on a jet ski or something like that. But that was a surprise because Jalen Noel is a very important player for this team this year.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. Or it could have been working out at the facility too. So like EJ Speed got injured working out at the facility. But yeah. No Jalen Noel, like it's been that. Hey, how come they're. The Texans aren't interested in Stefan Diggs? Well, they want to see what they have in Jaylen Noel. That's the answer to that. Yeah. Kind of a big deal. And people are expecting a big leap forward. Hopefully seeing more of what we saw from him in the Chargers game, especially that I. I'm gonna feel agitated about that, and I'm gonna feel justified in doing it. Because last year, this time people were telling us. You were. That you and I were just nervous Nellies because Joe Mixon wasn't out here. Remember all the people we'd be like, hey, you know, it's been a few weeks and Joe Mixon still isn't out there. You guys don't know Ball. Joe Mixon never does much during training camp. Why don't you guys, you got people who know Ball know that Joe Mixon's gonna be just fine.

We would be like, no, but he's literally not out here. Like, he's not even doing things on the side.

[Seth Payne]

We don't know where he is.

[Sean Pendergast]

He's a ghost.

He's, like, off with Dora the Explorer somewhere.

Now. There's one, there's one.

There was the report. The only report I've seen is Aaron Wilson saying that he's reporting that it's that. I'm paraphrasing. But no, no, no. Jalen Noel. It doesn't sound like it's serious with Jalen Noel.

Right, right, right. And again, that's where just. We'll see, we'll see, we'll see.

Yep, we'll see.

But that's, you know, so, hey, Lewis Bond, you know, like Xavier Hutchinson, obviously get some more reps like Tank Dell. I don't think Tank Dell is not going to get any more or fewer reps based on anybody else's injury status. I think he's going to be on a very limited pitch count early on, but guys like the rookie Louis Bond, you know, he might get some more reps with the Twos as everybody moves up a little bit. All right.

I think as far as things that I get asked about the most and you get asked about the most outside of our little sports radio bubble that we're in, when we're out and about, CJ Stroud is the headliner.

If you told me Houston got good quarterback play, they would be my pick out of the AFC to go to the Super Bowl. But there's a big question mark of kind of like how CJ plays and really performs in his fourth year.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, that's. I mean that's. You could paraphrase that. And 29 other people in the national media have said the same thing. We've all been saying that same thing. The. I mean, immediately after the playoffs, the hot take was that CJ could have just kneeled on the ball and they would have been better off. Which is an exaggeration. Not in the first half, but it's not too far off.

[Sean Pendergast]

That's true.

[Seth Payne]

In the first half of that game. If you're just cade Stover tush pushed. Yeah. I think the thing that's notable about that quote right there, it's not like that's a hot take or anything, is he just said good quarterback play. Right. He didn't even say Sam Darnold level play from last year or anything. He just said good quarterback play. So I think the bar, the bar for CJ really has almost been lowered too much, I think, for what people are expecting from this team. Look, do I think he has. Do I think he's capable of better than what he was in the playoffs? Yes. I've seen it with my own eyes. Do I think he's better, capable, more capable of more than what he did in the last regular season? Yes. But I think it should be much, much better. And I'm not, I'm not just hoping for passable quarterback play this year so you can ride, you can ride your defense to glory. It's that. No, I want to see CJ really come into his own in this offense.

[Sean Pendergast]

There's, I mean, there's two angles to it. One is the Texans as a team, which I think just good quarterback play. I agree with Dan Orlovsky and everybody who said that it would have worked last year would have gotten them to a Super Bowl. Then there's the angle of CJ himself, which is he's looking to get a big contract. Is passable quarterback play right, good enough to get the next seven generations of Strouds the generational wealth that they want?

[Seth Payne]

Seven generations, big contract. Can CJ's grandson basically be like Johnny Manziel, you know, trust fund kid that's spoiled and out there?

[Sean Pendergast]

That's the big question.

[Seth Payne]

That's the American dream, is that your grandchildren and future generations will be spoiled little brats.

[Sean Pendergast]

You do well enough so your kids can be a bunch of insolent bastards.

[Seth Payne]

You want to be so financially successful that you would despise your descendants? Yes, that's exactly right. Entitled little bastards.

What is. I always ask you this question the first day of camp. I always compare training camp with all the different drills to Disney World. And you got all the different rides. You walk into Disney World, like, what ride am I gonna go on first?

Yeah, that's how I always felt as a player. Especially when it was, you know, there

are a bunch of circus.

[Seth Payne]

If it was triple digit temperatures, I'd be like, huh, this is better than Disney World.

Which, which position group or drills or whatever are you most interested?

[Seth Payne]

My favorite to watch, if you ever could actually catch a glimpse of it, is the one on one pass rush. They do such a good job of kind of sequestering that away in the far reaches of. I think they do it in Tomball. I'm not quite sure, but it's barely on the premises.

[Sean Pendergast]

They look so tired when they come back to the facility.

[Seth Payne]

I don't think it's covered by their insurance policy. They have to get a separate policy because they're off doing it in one of the parking lots.

[Sean Pendergast]

You're right. That would be a fun one to

[Seth Payne]

be able to watch. No, I think early on, especially for today because there are no pads for the first couple days. The I like when they do goal line or red zone, seven on seven and red zone team stuff because then that's where the windows are tightest. And if CJ's getting rid of the ball, you know, and playing it honest and everything, that's where you can still see some good work done even without the physicality.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

The biggest thing really, and I said this yesterday when I was stuck at the airport in Atlanta. I just did an impromptu livestream. There's one thing I'm not going to do this year. I'm not going to say if the offense has a good day versus the defense in pads or out of pads. I'm not going to say, well, listen, you can't read too much into it. By hell I won't. Last year they couldn't. Last year they couldn't pee a drop. It's like they hadn't had. They hadn't had water in six weeks against the defense. This is the best secondary in the NFL now especially. They already were and now they've got Reed Blankenship back there. Anything that the offense can do in pads or out of pads in the passing game, I'm going to get really excited about. So really, it just to overly simplify it, it's anytime CJ's competing against that defense.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yep. I'll give you just a simple one that I just am very curious and anxious to see and I'll make it real simple. Left to right. Who's the first team offensive line?

[Seth Payne]

Oh, okay.

[Sean Pendergast]

You know, just who. Personnel wise, just who are the five guys left to right to start out training.

[Seth Payne]

So the favorites in the clubhouse would be Ariante Ursary, Wyatt Teller, Keelan Rutledge, Ed Ingram and then Braden Smith and I think that's by and large the chalk or what people would I think

[Sean Pendergast]

so I think Braden Smith is the closest one to like a coin flipper with Trent Brown. Well, especially Braden Smith is still coming back from injury.

[Seth Payne]

He's coming back from a neck injury. Didn't participate much at all in the spring. Right. But I do think that that's probably just by virtue of the, they're, they want genuine competition on the offensive line this year and I think they're capable of having it. So I think that given what Trent Brown did for the team last year and how well they played when they were in there, I think that might be a genuinely competitive.

One of the many comparisons I make between LeBron James and CJ Stroud.

They're their respective sports.

But then we got into, we, we got into a discussion about the most glaring physical flaws of every Texans quarterback historically.

[Sean Pendergast]

I'm going to put that together.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah. Put together a chat GPT image of the, the most glaring physical flaw.

Some of them are you can talk about more on social media than Others, I would say. Yeah, so. So speaking of the quarterback, though, C.J. stroud, he is the big story here at Texans training camp. And when the national media gets here, and they're going to get here, Texans are, they're, they're kind of a national darling team heading into the season because of that defense and because I think CJ is a compelling topic. So we've been doing, as you know, Seth, a question per day going back the last nine radio days, 10 questions till Texans training camp. We are here it is day one. We are down to the final question. We have held off on doing a question about CJ Stroud until today.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

What is the one thing you most need to see from CJ Stroud in this training camp?

[Seth Payne]

My, my biggest thing. I mean, this is like, this is overarching, but I would just say competence and. Okay, what does that look like? What kind of competence are you looking for? Everything they were talking about in the OTAs and minicamp about the pre snap operation, the thing about that is that really what you're saying is we need the quarterback to be dialed in and having everything operating smoothly. So, and this is how I've always looked at it on an offense. When I see a bunch of pre snap penalties, when I see things just disheveled guys making mental errors and what have you, I put it on two people. I put it on the offensive coordinator and the quarterback, and that's the sum total of it. And in this offense especially, they really want the, they want the quarterback to be like Tom Brady was back in the day, where you see him checking the protection, moving guys around, checking the protection again and doing all of this stuff, you know, 10 different things in the course of 15 seconds pre snap. And it's just that level of competence in terms of actually driving and orchestrating the offense and then above and beyond that, obviously all the normal quarterback competence stuff. But if they really want this offense to work, that's what, that's what it's got to be. And I think that they're, they're making progress in that regard. I think you're going to see CJ just in his second year in the system, not because he matured or anything like that. He's just in the second year of the system. It's going to be better.

[Sean Pendergast]

That's what I want to see too. I'm my thing, I want to see. And we're going to hear from a couple of CJ's new teammates here in a second, Wyatt Teller and Foster Moreau. And what they're seeing from CJ Stroud early on in their time with him here. Mine is in that same neighborhood as yours. We heard so much in that period of around OTAs and minicamp from people like Nick Casario, people like D' Amico Ryan's teammates of CJ Stroud voluntarily talking about volunteering, not even being asked directly about CJ we asked a question of Nick about the offense in general when he was on with us last time. And he, he, Nick took the conversation over to CJ and said, and really all the, the advancement we've been seeing in the offense, I'm paraphrasing here. The big part of that is the offseason that C.J. stroud has had.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

The command that he's had in these minicamp practices, the command that he's had in OTAs, the things that he's now seeing on film that are translating to the practice field. This is where the rubber really meets the road. Because at some point here, very soon there's going to be pads on these guys. And this time a year ago, it looked horrible for the offense.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

In part because they couldn't get out of the huddle in time and things like that.

[Seth Payne]

And then also. And then the interior offensive line was just getting manhand, which. Okay, everybody's getting manhandled on the offensive line. Yeah, yeah. Last year I would say you give a little bit of grace obviously to, you know, when a guy, you got a rookie in Ariante Ursary out there going against Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter. Yeah, he's going to have some rough snaps. But I think just even when you're in non tackle football, shoulder pads and shorts, all of that, you got to have a certain level of physicality to you, to the point where it's not obvious to everybody watching that you're getting destroyed by the defensive line and by the defensive, you know, last year's defensive tackles, which is a very good group of defensive tackles. But it's also not, it's, it's not the greatest defensive tackles who ever lived out there, but they all looked like it.

[Sean Pendergast]

Yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Last two training camps in a row, we were thinking, I was like, boy, I think Mario woods went, Mario Edwards might be first team all pro this year. Coming up, based on, based on training.

[Sean Pendergast]

Coming up next, how many Pro Bowls is Tommy Togi going to?

[Seth Payne]

Right. Well, Togie Isle. Togi has turned into a genuinely really, really impressive defensive tackle. But it was pretty much anybody that got in there at defensive tackle looked like he was going to be an all pro. And when you're seeing that in training camp, yeah, you should get nervous. So I just, I just want to see competence out of the offensive line, I think.

[Sean Pendergast]

Competence, I think too. I feel like there's been a hit to CJ's ball placement. Specialist reputation. Yeah, the accuracy hasn't quite been there the last couple of years. That was there. His, at times during his, his rookie year.

[Seth Payne]

This is. Okay. I have a theory on that. And I thought Robert Mayes from the Athletic put it really well. It's that he has inconsistent inconsistency issues because you still see all of the really, really impressive throws that he makes. And he'll have games where it just feels like he's pinpointing he's on. But I think that there's, there's when especially you know, perhaps when he's feeling a little uncomfortable in the pocket or his footwork isn't quite right, you'll have these stretches where he just kind of curiously air mails the ball or has a really inaccurate throw or a few really inaccurate throws.

[Sean Pendergast]

The New England game was awful, right?

[Seth Payne]

Well, you're right. The New England game and this is the problem and nobody wants to hear I have a hard time. I have a hard time with completely discounting the elements in that case. You know what C.J. did in that game? He had one of the nicest passes I've ever seen versus an all out cover zero blitz to Christian Kirk in the end zone. That was an absolutely astoundingly beautiful play. Especially given that he had three guys closing in on him, you know, relatively unblocked. But he also had a really bad, a bunch of really, really torque Stovers knee. It was the decisions more so than anything. Right? Yeah. The first non contact hospital ball we were saying.

[Sean Pendergast]

Right.

Right when we thought Kate Stover might never play football again.

On the field, I'm telling you. Like, you'll just hear him talk, you know, he recites the plays. Doesn't need, you know, 15 times to do it. Just gets it right the first time. And that's how he kind of is with everything.

You talk to him about coverages, and dude is like an encyclopedia on all the coverages, all the fronts, all this different stuff. I mean, absolutely, you know, insanely knowledgeable on all things football. Okay, so I'm putting that in the same bucket of the other people I just cited that have been over the top in their praise for C.J. stroud this offseason.

Right, right, right. You know, I mean, that's all. That's the classic. I mean, you could say the same thing about Mike Lombardi. That's what he's known for, was his encyclopedic knowledge of the game. Not known for his ball players, but not for his actual decision making or competence as a GM back in the day or as whatever the hell, or as a GM at UNC or even now. Yeah. So, like, no. And I think that that's what people were impressed with, with C.J. in his rookie year was okay. He seemed to really get it when it comes to understanding where you need to go and what you need to learn for the higher level stuff. And I think that's all in there. And we've seen it. We've seen him do that stuff in these, in these first three years. It's just that last year is in a new offense and whatever issues or excuses you want to make for him or the offense in general, it should be better this year. Yeah. Like the, the whiteboard knowledge transfers over to the field.

[Sean Pendergast]

We'll have eyes on CJ Stroud and everybody, everybody else out here, not just today, but for the next couple of weeks here at Texans training camp. Among the things, while you were out, did you see Vita Vea request a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Seth Payne]

Vita Vega, the mammoth defensive tackle who is like, he's. He's getting a little long in the tooth and he's not quite as astoundingly impressive as he used to be, but he's seeing all these other defensive tackles get paid some. Some big time contracts doled out this offseason, including yesterday. Yeah.

[Sean Pendergast]

Holy smokes.

[Seth Payne]

The.

[Sean Pendergast]

The Jalen Carter.

[Seth Payne]

The Eagles have. The Eagles might be spending. It's got to be the most spent on an interior defensive line in the history of football.

[Sean Pendergast]

They paid Jordan Davis.

[Seth Payne]

Right.

And they. Now they paid. And then Jalen Carter. They just paid Jalen Carter.

[Seth Payne]

I mean, that's a couple of like 38 million. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know, man, if I'm. That's one of those tough decisions you got to make. If you're Tampa, I'm guessing if you're Jason Light, the gm, you're probably publicly going to say something like, well, no. Well, Vita Ve is a Buccaneers for life. And we would never do that. But they'll listen to. They'll listen to.

[Sean Pendergast]

Texans are seventh on the odds board

[Seth Payne]

to land now they just drafted Caden freaking McDonald. And they are like, okay, it's not like. Because D' Ameco D' Amico said in his press conference after they drafted Kaden McDonald. Look, I know a lot of people think that. I'm paraphrasing here. A lot of people think that we only want these smaller, faster defensive tackles, but it's not like we haven't gone out and tried to get some. It's just it's worked out this time. That doesn't mean that all of a sudden they're going to be trans transitioning into a 3, 4 defense and they need nothing but massive space eaters all over the place.

[Sean Pendergast]

Dude, you and I are on the same side. There's a zero percent chance Vita VEZ coming to Houston. I just think it's interesting because he won't be the last defensive player out there to request a trade or whatever. I think the Texans, as long as they have this defense, they are always going to show up in the top quartile of teams in the market for good defensive players. It's just the way the odds work.

[Seth Payne]

You know the other thing you brought that you brought an article a few weeks ago and that I thought was really interesting. So I read it after we talked about it on the radio, after you presented it to me. No, I had, I had a sales job. No, I had missed part of it. We were kind of talking about the quarterbacks and everything. I hadn't read the entire article. But one of the, when they go back and they look at how well players age by position group, defensive tackles age really well. And one of the quotes from there is like, hey, your, your physical strength is the last to go. But when you want to pay a guy, if you, if Vita Vella wants to get paid like those other guys, those guys still have the speed in the pass rush. You know, Vita Ver, he's probably more than anything looking at Dexter Lawrence. And Dexter Lawrence might not be the same guy he was before his injury and he's probably not going to get double digit sacks again at any point. But he's still really, really valuable and he might, he might be thinking, okay, yeah, there's people that are desperate for guys like Dexter Lawrence. I'm kind of in that same category right now. Yep.

We'll get to some Texans news in just a minute, but let's start with the Astros. 3 to 2, they win last night. The story's coming out of this game. You got your classic Peter Lambert start. Seth, you got five innings of kind of dancing with the devil. Two run ball. You know, he was very trafficky. A lot of guys on baseball, but most notably in the fifth inning, he was able to pitch his way out of trouble. Striking out. I forget who he struck out, but he struck out somebody to end the inning there. Was really pumped coming off the mound and then handed it over to the bullpen. The bullpen's been awesome lately. The bullpen rescued them in Tatsuya Imai's start two nights ago. Most specifically Christian Javier, who was incredible

but also fatigued themselves in doing so too.

Javier getting five innings really helped the rest of this bullpen. But yeah, they, the bullpen's been very taxed, no question. Last night they were awesome. Four guys each coming in, pitching an inning. De los Santos, Abreu, Okert, and then Hayter closing it out. So we'll see what availability looks like for guys today. But great job by the bullpen. And Jordan ALVAREZ Getting you two of the three RBIs in that game. He started you off with a home run, finished it off with an RBI single. In between, Christian Walker hits a solo.

The Angels had to make a decision whether to load the bases or pitch to Yordon. And so anyway, two nights ago. Yeah, two nights ago. Yeah, I just, Sean, I've been here, I've been here in the present moment for like, yeah. As far as right now, they're two games back from the Rangers in the division. I've got that right. Right.

Yordon Alvarez crushes one high and deep. Forget about it. 44. Just mash the first pitch he sees tonight for his 35th home run of the year.

We're good. Callous. It had like a reverberation to it.

Yeah, it sounded like a double hit. Like they had somebody actually, like some intern was up there with a parabolic mic who wasn't supposed to be there. Probably got fired after the game. Yeah, that was good.

So Yon his 35th home run last night. He's out in front of every offensive stat right now. Astro tried to go for the sweep tonight, seven and one in their last eight games. I just know when we came in after that sweep by the Orioles that following Monday, I just remember being like, man, Espada has got to be on death watch right now. And this team should be, this team should be in sell mode. And they've responded really, really well.

[Seth Payne]

Yeah, no, they have. And I mean it's, they've, they've, they've done this to us in the past where you feel like, oh, there's no way in hell they should be thinking about this. And then all of a sudden in June or July, they start to do some things. And this entire way where they're 71 in their last eight games, we've been saying, all right, cool. They want, you know, they won a bunch of series in a row and they started to look more like a real baseball team, but now they're doing this and getting that almost a streak. You know, you went seven of your last date. If they can extend this on and have a good series against the Rangers. Yeah, I'm going to feel way, way different about this baseball team.

Heading right into the trade deadline on Monday, August 3rd.

Do you have it? Boy, I'll tell you never. You should never read into just a three game series is where you are and whether you should be buying heavily or not. But if I were a GM or an owner, I'd be swayed by it. Well, you sweep the Rangers and take the division lead and I'd be like, yes, you're trade for everybody. Screw these minor league because I don't never liked any of them.
