Mary Leng is a mathematical fictionalist, which is a philosopher who thinks mathematics is a useful fiction. This was a fascinating discussion on the epistemological challenges facing Platonism and how to make sense of fictionalism as an alternative. Our discussion ended with me trying out on Mary my view that mathematical knowledge is rooted in mystical experiences. Do you think she was convinced???If you want to dig a bit deeper, there's a related article on my Substack.Mary's website“Galileo’s Error” is my book on consciousness and panpsychism. My book “Why? In his book 'Eastern Philosophy and Classical Theism,' Tyler Dalton McNabb argues that many Eastern religions believe in the God of classical theism. Mike Huemer is a great philosopher and a star of philosophy YouTube, and I loved this chat with him about whether morality is objective. I like to chat both to people who agree with me and to people who disagree with me. This was a mix of both. Here’s a prior debate Mike and had on whether taxation if theft (spoiler: it’s not).Make sure you subscribe to Mike’s Substack Fake Nous, and buy all of his books. My book “Why? Can we account for consciousness in the terms of physical science? You may have heard about zombies and black and white Mary, but I think it all hangs and falls on something called the "Revelation Argument." In this episode, I discuss the revelation argument with Michelle Liu, who's one of the most interesting philosophers writing on this topic. Let me know what you think! If you’re interested in digging a little deeper, Michelle sent me over some of her writing in this are, which I've listed on my Substack For more on Michelle Liu: Her WebsiteMy book “Why? Christof Koch is a hugely influential figure in the science of consciousness. I was somewhat taken aback at a recent conference when Christof spoke of the recent mystical experience that has changed his life. I couldn’t resist having a chat with Christof about his experience and how it’s impacted him. It was a great conversation, and I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on it.For more on Christof and his fantastic books, including 'Then I Am Myself the World' in which he talk about his mystical experience, check out his website: https://christofkoch.com/If you have any questions about the discussion, subscribe to my Substack and I'll try to answer them in this month's 'Ask Me Anything' video: https://substack.com/@philipgoffPre-order my book "Why? Alex O'Connor and I have the same view on consciousness (we think it's fundamental) but we radically disagree on whether morality is objective. Here I try to convince Alex that either he joins me in thinking morality is objective, or he gives up his view that consciousness is fundamental. He can't have it both ways!! AM I RIGHT??Visual version of my chat with Alex available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtm148PDafA&t=13sIf you have any questions about the discussion, subscribe to my Substack and I'll try to answer them in this month's 'Ask Me Anything' video: https://substack.com/@philipgoffPre-order my book "Why?
