Tyrus
What it is. Welcome to Planet Tyrus. You're in my gravitational pull. I am very excited. I don't like to use the word mentor very much, but whether he, he's such a humble guy, he would never admit to it. But during my time in the wwe, there were several people, established figures, stars, some behind the scenes, some in front of the camera, and one of the most meaningful relationships that I had forged while I was there with Kane, as you guys know him, hall of Famer and also Mayor Glenn Jacobs. But his behind the scenes advice, his being one of the biggest stars in the history of the company, but he always was in the dressing room with the boys and that always meant a lot to me. Now, look, I'm not taking anything away from. You're a superstar. You earn the right to have a bus. You earn the right to fly. Pirate. I get it. But he was just one of those. He felt his place was with us and his words of advice and encouragement, a lot to do with telling us to save our money and accept failures and things like that. He was just a tremendous, tremendous role model for how to carry yourself as a professional and, and professional athletes. So very excited to have Glenn Jacob. Mayor. Mr. Mayor, Glenn Jacobs on today and of course, aka Kane. Hopefully we'll have some fun wrestling stories. We're going to talk about life and some of the things that he's overcame to get where he is today. And if I can finally get him to admit if he has any, any desires on the White House at some point in his political career. So without further ado, let's, let's get it on. Let's have Mr. Glenn Jacobs. Mr. Mayor. Well, forgive before we get into other stuff. Now you're a parent and all yours are all grown, right? Yes, I'm struggling because my daughter, all mine are growing up. They were kids last year. They needed me for everything last year. They don't need me for anything right now other than pay for it. Did you go through that? I mean, especially being because you. I mean, you. Everyone knows your wrestling career. You're an iconic character and you weren't like the other superstars who kind of picked and choose and took time off. Like you were there with everyone. The Flying Cow happened every night, every, every weekend. You know, was that, was it difficult when you like, did you notice it right away when you.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
One thing to keep in mind is my daughters are my stepdaughters. I got them when they were nine. I got them so.
Tyrus
Sounds like they're used. No, no, because I have two Stepsons. I, I, I, I drafted them.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
I drafted them at 8 and 11.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Exact when mine were 9 and 12. So they were already kind of getting there. Their mom is very, their mom's very strong. That's part of the reason we've been able to stay married. Even though I was on the road so much, she was just, you know, she's very strong, very independent. What's interesting, so, so with them, probably not so much because ours are, they're already kind of there.
Tyrus
They were there.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, and we, we got along really great and you know, I'm dad, you know, you know, but again, it's a little bit different dynamic because I didn't, I remember one time I was, I was, you know, I was upset with him about something and I told him, I was like, guys, you gotta remember, you know that whole bonding, your infant things, we didn't go through that. Okay. No, my kids are awesome.
Tyrus
I just met you. Yeah, they're great.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
But what's interesting is now my granddaughter, who, she's 16 and that is kind of interesting because now I've seen the.
Tyrus
Whole journey you've gone through, the whole process.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. Especially now with my, with my wife too. They're best friends, you know. You know, and my granddaughter and my wife, they're still best friends. But now my granddaughter's starting to do stuff like she's driving and she's, you know, she's growing up sometimes and she's not getting home until like, you know, 11 o' clock or so. And I'm like, I don't think I.
Tyrus
Like this very much. Like, I don't like, I, I'm lucky that all mine are still not able to drive yet. So I think that's the scary part. But when I would come home, my, my youngest one, Georgie, didn't matter what she was doing.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
I would hear something drop and, and I would hear the patter of the feet and be running and jump. Daddy's home. And I'd pick her up and it was the greatest feeling in the world. Now when I walk in the door, it's like, and I'll, they won't even lift their heads up from the dinner table. Like it's, it's on the stove, you know, and you're like, I'm home.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
They're like, eh.
Tyrus
So she just had a photo shoot and I got, like I said, I showed you earlier. And I'm looking at him and I don't see my 11 year old. I see a young woman and I'M going to put these will be up. I guess we can zoom there, but he's going to be up all over the thing. But it was, it was tough, but it made me really think about life on the road. How much you miss how time goes by and not just with kids, but just life. And even in your, your neighborhoods and your friendships and stuff like that. When, when you transition from an. On a Hall of Fame wrestling career to public service to where you, you have to be there. I mean, you still travel because you, you, you know, you still do things like that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I'm still, you know, even when I'm home, I'm still doing.
Tyrus
You're always working. Yeah, right. Is it the two different worlds? Is there a lot. Is there similarities with public service and.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, I would say to some extent there is, you know, because again, you know, I, I still. You miss. Miss stuff. Sometimes I can't do things at home that I would like to do because of just, you know, responsibilities, commitments, obligations that I have through the office. You know, one of the things that I always think about when I look back on my wrestling career and I would very much encourage anyone, anyone out there to just slow down and savor things, you know, especially when you're in the middle of it. Because people ask me about, about those years, you know, I'm there. It's the wrestling business. It's the hottest thing in entertainment. I mean, WWE is not just wrestling. I mean, we were like, in entertainment, we were at the very top. It's all a blur.
Tyrus
I would say probably for a short time. The funniest comedic duo on TV was you and Daniel Bryant. I put you guys up against any sitcom.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Oh, yeah, it was great.
Tyrus
And you guys, it was phenomenal.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
The thing is, it's a blur.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Because we were always, you know, it's always getting to the next town, doing the next show, just, you know, and I look back and I think, man, you know, all this stuff that was happening and, and it was just extraordinary and something that most people will never, ever get to experience. And now, you know, now, of course, man, I think, wow, how cool was that? I wish that I had been more in the moment a lot of times, you know, and then again, you think about the family stuff and I don't want to call it sacrifice because it was a choice that I made, you know, but still, there's a lot of stuff, there's a lot of stuff that I missed that I wish that I could have seen, wish I could have been there for.
Tyrus
Yeah, you know, What? That's. It's so funny you brought that up, because I was just talking to Trevor Murdoch. Even he was. He was in the WWE before me, but when I went to the nwa, that's when him and I bonded. But we actually met and we talked about, you know, what a waste it was when we were grizzled.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And the first time I had met him was at smackdown. John Larinaitis had invited me. I was living in California at the time. Smackdown was at the Staples center, and they had. I just had that. Tommy Dreamer had just discovered me, and they invited me backstage, and it was my first time ever being backstage, so I didn't know what to expect. And I was thinking it was very similar to, like, football, you know, you dress appropriately, shut up, be seen, but not heard, you know?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
And I saw. And I didn't know, you know, I didn't know about whose gimmick was what or whatever. So I see Trevor Murdoch. My last name's Murdoch. So I walked over to him was, hey, what's up, man? You know, my last name is Murdoch. And he was like, it's a gimmick. He just stared at me and I was like, gimmick? What the. You know, they just sat there, right, spitting his cup. Anything else? And I was like, no, I'm. I'm good. Thanks, man. I'll. I'm gonna go crawl this. I'm go over here and go myself now. Thanks for. Thanks for having me. Stop by, cousin, you know, and I've never let him forget that, cuz now we're. We're thick as thieves. But it was funny because one day in the nwa, he's like, man, I feel like we met before. I said, we have. We 1000% have.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
My name is Mur.
Tyrus
It's a gimmick, remember? And he was like, oh, bud, you gotta understand. I said, no, I understand now. I didn't understand then. All I knew then was you were an asshole. That's all I understood. But. And then. Then one day I became that guy.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
Like, hey, bro, it's a gimmick, kid. I don't like dancing. We all did, you know, but you don't. It always takes somebody coming up to you and reminding you of something, and then you're like, I did that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
You know, it was. I was in a. I was in the airport and there was. He didn't speak very good English. He was from Russia, but he went to the first Russian show and he goes, you were the first match. And it was. You And I think it was me and JTG and Russia. And I was like, oh, yeah, yeah. You know, And I was like, I did do that. You know, just little things you don't remember. And then. Then you go through a whole thing, remember, and then all of a sudden, next thing you know, you're online, trying to look at some of your old matches, and you're like, I don't remember any of this. And you're so right. About. I talk about it, actually, in my new book, Plug in my new book. I talk about taking a moment, when you do get to your mountains, to just catch your breath for a minute because the mountain slide comes real quick. And if you don't take time to enjoy the moment, because we're always thinking in the moment, what's next? Or trying to hold on to that moment so hard that, you know, like, I got to keep this spot to where we don't have it anymore. And I think that comes with wisdom. But when I. When I get. When I get home and I think of the stuff that you missed, I don't call it a sacrifice either, because I also walk into a home that. That life provided.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
I also walk into a home that my daughter rides horses because I took bumps. Right. You know, because if not, that just wouldn't have happened on a teacher's salary. That wouldn't have happened. You know, So I try to keep it in perspective. Don't be too down on yourself, because, yes, you had to be on the road 300 days a year, but also look at the life that it's afforded you and the opportunities that have come from it.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I have. I have two incredible daughters. They're both nurses. Advanced degrees. My one daughter's nurse practitioner. My other daughter has a master's degree in healthcare administration. You know, they're. They're. They're two of the hardest working people I've ever met.
Tyrus
My mother was a nurse, so. I know.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Awesome.
Tyrus
They drop 90 hours a week like it's nothing, you know, because. And I've always. I always would rather get told by the nurse than the doctor. Yeah. Because the nurse ain't going to bullshit you.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And she ain't trying to build her summer home.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's exactly right. Yeah. It's funny, my daughter, who's a nurse practitioner, you know, she would be a doctor. She just have to go back to school and basically get the credential. But the knowledge is already there. Right. You know, she just doesn't want to do that. But a lot of times she actually Knows more about the patient. And, you know, she'll. And the doctors listen to her, you know, and when she was a nurse, it was the same way. Like, she was the person. Yeah, yeah. She was the one that's actually spending the time with them. And so you're exactly right. My other daughter, she runs a home health service, and she's, what, she's in her late 30s now, but she's actually over our entire region, 16 counties in East Tennessee. She probably has 150 people now that she supervises. At that age, it's pretty amazing.
Tyrus
I mean, that's. And when you look at all the horror stories from life on the road, it's nice to know that. And then you just got to go. You got to go tip your hat to your wife.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, That's.
Tyrus
It was all crystal, you know, and.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
She was the one that. She raised some really, really good kids.
Tyrus
Because the two of mine that are homeschooled, they're doing very well. And then, of course, public school. Not everyone is living in Knoxville, Tennessee, where you've made it a point to work with, get things going, even if your path isn't college. One of the things that I always respected from the first time that you became mayor, you always talked about trade school. You always talked about having something. And I think that also comes from life experience, because your plan originally was the NFL.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
You know, and then when that, you know, knee injury happens, and then. Boop. With me was my appendix rupturing during a workout camp. When that happens, you got to have plan B.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
What's going to happen?
Tyrus
Yeah, Always a WWE career.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
No, you know, for a lot of us, plan B is having a trade. My. I have my degree, which was in teaching. So for. For a while, I was.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I'm the same. That's what I was going to do. I was going to teach and coach. Yep.
Tyrus
I was going to. Yep. P.E. and coach football. Was. Was my plan. Me, too.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And.
Tyrus
Because at least if you have that. And I think we look at. Especially with the polarization of. I call it intangible goals. Like when you see a commercial, everyone's in the NBA. Everyone's a rapper, an actor, NFL. They're all these. These amazing jobs. But if you look at. Statistically, it's less than 1%. Oh, it's.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. It's like.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
But do you know. Do you know what the most popular vehicle among millionaires is?
Tyrus
No, I do not. What?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Ford F150 truck. Because most millionaires out there are contractors. Ah.
Tyrus
See.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Or trades people who built their own businesses.
Tyrus
Well, they don't have, they don't have college debt either.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, they don't have college debt. You know, I was really happy too. Last year in Tennessee, we passed Universal School Choice Education Freedom Act. So now, you know, kids can look. If you want to stay in public school, that's great. If you want to use that money for an alternative, we, that's wonderful as well. And I really think that's what an education system should be. We should be able, you know, for, if you're a young person, to experience all these different opportunities, all these different career paths, figure out what you're good at, figure out what your gifts are sometimes. Figure out what you don't want to do.
Tyrus
Exactly. Well, because, you know, it's weird and I don't, I'm. When I was a kid in California, I, I was in the magnet school program. So I took a test and I qualified and I went to a school that was more specific to a certain thing. Like I, I tested really high in science, right? So I went to Brett, ironically, Bret Art Elementary School in Burbank, California. Yeah, there was no, there was no sharpshooters there, but I always laugh at the name. But, but it was a science school, so I was in zoology classes on top of a regular curriculum, but I had to take a three hour bus ride, you know, but it didn't bother me because I was, I was getting what you wanted. And I was also around a bunch of other kids with the same ideas and stuff like that. And fortunately for me, they, a lot of them weren't on the athletic side. So I was the ruler of kickball and basketball. Like I was always the first one picked, you know, but, and I think about, I, I mentioned that the other day, I said, do they not have magnet programs anymore? And everyone looked at me like I was crazy. And I was, I didn't go to school in the Flintstones.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Well, man, you know, I think one of the worst mistakes that our country's made is we took shop out of like junior high school. You know, when I was in seventh grade, I took woodworking, eighth grade, it took metal working, you know. And then in high school you still had, you still had stuff. Whereas now a lot of places don't have anything.
Tyrus
No, no, they don't even have. It was the classes that you always wanted you on. Wood shop, metal shop. And then you got into the room was the mechanic. So you learned how to fix your car because, you know, because none of us were getting a brand new car. Right. We were all getting this.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
This is. By the way. But when cars actually had carburetors.
Tyrus
Yeah. But you needed to know how to do it, you know? Yeah. Not just. And you want. And when you got your first car. I mean, mine was a. It was a Datsun. Paid like 600 bucks for. I spent most of my time.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That car, man.
Tyrus
Oh, it was a glove, bro. Yeah, it was a glove.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
My first car is a 1971 Super Beetle Volkswagen.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I was really proud. I had a hydrostatic transmission, which is kind of a hybrid between automatic and a stick shift.
Tyrus
But I was excited when I got four matching tires.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Exactly.
Tyrus
Because I was buying used tires all the time because I couldn't afford. And I had to put. The seat wouldn't go back far. And one day the seat broke back, so there was really no back seat. I had actually filled it with old. I took indoor speakers from. Because this is. I feel like kids missed out because everything's so tech. Everything's WI fi.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
Because I had that. The Stackman stereo column. Yeah. Yeah. And then I decided to take one of my speakers and put it in the back of my car and wire it to the thing. I'm probably lucky I didn't blow up, but, like, I would turn it up.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And it'd be loud.
Tyrus
It would sound God awful to anybody else, but to me. But there was a certain. Like, everyone was. Had their thing, you know, and then there's always one of your buddies whose dads get him a Mustang, and you're just like, you know, you just want to stand next. You don't want to park next to his car. Because I remember my car, I think, was supposed to be white, but it kind of had like an egg yellow kind of color to it. But I just. But I look back on that and I think, man, that's. That was a really cool time because I had to do it all myself. You know, I had to learn. I. I used to bug my shop teacher, and I always want to volunteer my car for the class to learn how to change stuff. Because, you know, and. And I. If I. And I have two. My two stepsons. One's one's 20, and the other one's 23. I think if I threw a spark plug at them, they wouldn't know what to do with it. And it's. It's not a. I had. The one thing I had to do was stop blaming them. I think that's not their fault. He's like, kids don't know anything today.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's Stable.
Tyrus
It's our fault, right? Because we took it all. We simplified it to where. Because I made a joke one day. I said, who here could go out in the woods and live for a week? I would pay $5,000. I can't do that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I wouldn't be able to do that. I don't think I could anymore, man.
Tyrus
You could make a fire and a tent. At least you would have the knowledge.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, I guess.
Tyrus
Yeah. You wouldn't be looking in the trees for a WI FI signal.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Well, that's true.
Tyrus
Yeah. You know, like, that's true. Go sell yourself. Sure. Okay. I get.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, that's true.
Tyrus
I mean, you were a prepper. You still are a prepper. Right. One of my most unfamous flavors. Funny conversations with you of all time in the locker room was you were talking about prepping and making sure you guys have this stuff, and you had, like, an underground. A thing you were working on, and. And I was like, hey, you got room for one more? And you just. No. And just went right back.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Take care of yourself.
Tyrus
Right next to your conversation. Yeah. Everyone's for yourself, you know? So I said, well, he's a prepper. And that was the day that Daniel Bryant was talking about digging for clams with his dad.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And I. Yeah, yeah.
Tyrus
Across the room. I was like.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It was actually. I mean, he was, like, really into that.
Tyrus
Yeah. I was like, you have a dad. And everyone's like, oh, man. What's that like? He was. Are you kidding me? But, yeah, he was a super outdoorsman. I was into it just because I had to be. We had to get out of my. I wasn't allowed in the house, especially on the weekends. Like, you had to be gone.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, I look at my parents, man, my mom and dad are both in their 90s, and they're both still going strong. It's amazing. They are children of the Great Depression. My mom, I don't think she's ever bought a Tupperware dish in her life. You know, everything she keeps in Cool Whip containers.
Tyrus
Oh, wow.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
She reuses tinfoil.
Tyrus
Well, that generation.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
But they.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I think how tough they are, you know? And then I look at me, and I'm like, man, you know, they're just. They're so tough compared to. You know, to me, the only hope I have that.
Tyrus
Because there was this. Is this old saying in this. And when I was playing college ball, I had got a side job, and it was one of those football jobs where I would at night, go sit in the night classrooms with the Janitors and just do a walk around with a flashlight. Yeah. But I would spend that time sitting with the janitors, listening to their stories. And one of the janitors, he actually played for the Kansas City Chiefs way back in the day and he broke his leg and his, he had a permanent limp. Cause back then you kept playing. And he would always, you know, he would talk about this, that, whatever, and he, one day he said to me, you know, he's like, my grandfather walked, my great grandfather walked to work. And then my grandfather drove a truck to work. And like I drive a car to work, you know, and he goes, and my son will probably drive a Mercedes Benz to work. Yeah, but his son will walk to work. He says everything in life is cycles, you know. And I think right now we're going through that walk to work phase where they just don't really have their thing. But then that group will come along, that next group, and I think we're starting to see those younger kids with stronger moral grabbing findings, like, no, no. And hard work and stuff. And just trying to get him away from technology. Because I think our tech, I think technology has, has not, has hurt our parenting because I think we, I think we relied on it too much. You know, I, my wife didn't like, she's hands on, like to the point where I feel bad for the kids sometimes, you know, because she's watching everything. But you kind of have to be that way because then we'll have play dates. And it's the weirdest thing because my kids have to be outside. So they're like, hey, let's go build a Ford or let's take our action figures in the pool. And the other kids are, their faces are stuck in their phone. And you try not to judge the kid because you're like, they're allowing it. And I think we have to come up with some laws to hold people accountable because social media is not the babysitter. And I think we're learning that painful lesson right now. When we're looking at some of the behaviors we're seeing in society, it's come from. They're growing up on technology, opposed to.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Like, yeah, technology should be a tool. Instead it's for, for a lot of us come a master, you know, and that's not, that's not good. But things do self correct as well.
Tyrus
Yeah. And I think we're going through a self correct phase right now.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Just, it just can be painful when that happens.
Tyrus
I think the pandemic was probably the worst of it.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
Just because I think we just. It was the first. Well, it was the only time in my lifetime that I ever felt like I was controlled.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
You know, as an American, that was just. Maybe other countries could handle a little better because there was even England. Like, you say the wrong thing, you go to jail and stuff. But in America, we had never been in a situation where we were said we couldn't do anything. Other basic laws, which we all agreed to follow. But I'm just saying, you can't go outside. I'm a grown man. What? I can't do. What? I have to wear a mask. I have to do this. I have to stay. And I think that was. I think that was mentally destructive. The adults didn't want to deal with it, and it kind of trickled down. And we all should have came out of the pandemic in tremendous shape. We all should be. You know, I mean, like, we all should have been better. But I feel like we took, like, five years back. Like, we devolved five years and became very dependent on instant gratification. I think that's the problem with technology is the instant gratification.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Sure.
Tyrus
Because you can't. You can't really. When I. When we were kids, we were coming up. If you wanted a Sergeant Slaughter, I just saw him the other day. But I wanted his action figure. When I was a kid G.I. joe, I had to get four proofs of purchases.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
Which is huge on my allowance. That was weeks. Like, I got five bucks a week. If I took the trash out, bed was made. I got five bucks. And the average GI Joe figure was like 495 plus tax. Tax. That's why I hate taxation. Because you can get GI Joe. Could I get my GI Joe? Because it came out to, like, 5:17. I'm out the game. Then I had to go in with my brother. And that. That partnership never worked out.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
We could never spl Anything because there was no timeshare. But I had to be patient. And then when it took six weeks to get the toy back. But when you got it, you cherished it. You didn't trade it out. You didn't leave it on the ground. You know, like you, you. You. Everything you had that you worked for meant so much. Opposed to now where I'll just watch my kids on the thing go Amazon, click. Amazon, click. Can I get this? And if you're not paying attention.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And they press, boom. Next thing you know, there's six boxes. Yeah. Because we just had that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
The Magic Brown Truck of Happiness show.
Tyrus
Yes. Yes. My daughter ordered like artist 300 marker set. And I'm like, who the hell, who ordered this? You know, like, we had a Picasso. That's mine from my drawings. And I was like, you can't afford this. And then my mom was like, we were looking and I let her click something. But it's. At least it was Amazon and packages, not some of the horror stories that we're seeing out there. And now, as, as mayor, you've been pretty on the forefront of this. You've been very, very focused on building up education and getting kids alternatives. And it's. I, I think you guys have, in your, in your district, in your city, I think you guys have become sort of a model in a lot of ways.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
There's some stuff that we've done in my own life. I have one brother and I have one sister. My sister's an academic superstar. She's worked at NASA. Rocket scientist.
Tyrus
That's legit.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. You know, then she got bored doing that. Got a PhD in history, you know, just crazy smart. My brother, My brother had some learning disabilities. Very smart guy. He just wasn't really adept at classroom work and didn't like it. He liked to work with his hands, you know, so we were very fortunate because I grew up in a little bitty, little bitty town. We had a tri county Votech school. We called him Votech training back then. He went there and learned auto mechanics and he's been very successful at that. My sister has been very successful in her own way. We look down on people like my brother because he, he wasn't as strange as.
Tyrus
He learned differently.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, just learns differently. You know, again, smart guy, just learns differently. Had different skill set. But I'm gonna tell you something, you know, if I need to talk to someone about, oh, how do I fix the space station? I'll go talk to my sister. If I need someone to work on my car or something, I'm going to go talk to my brother. You know, society needs all of it. And again, he's done well for himself. We deprive young people of the opportunity to use their gifts and skills to the best of their abilities to better themselves, to better their economic situation, which in turn betters all of society, you know, so that's just something that's very important to me, something I learned early on watching my brother. Because, man, if he didn't have, if he didn't have that opportunity, he would have been one of the troublemakers. Who knows what his life would have turned out like? Who knows? He might have Gone we see in.
Tyrus
The inner cities today.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Exactly. You know, all these things instead. I mean, he has, he has, he had two daughters. One unfortunately passed away very tragically, but she was a nurse anesthetist. His other daughter is an orthopedic surgeon. Wow. You know, I mean, and none of those things probably would have happened if he hadn't had the opportunity to take advantage of his God given skills, which.
Tyrus
To me is a tragedy at some point. It used to be all those roads were available to everyone. And then I feel like all the roads were closed to push everyone towards college.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Hey, nothing wrong with going to college.
Tyrus
Nothing. But it's not for everybody.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It isn't for everybody. You know, and yeah, what we did is we actually diminished, we actually diminish the prestige of a bachelor's degree.
Tyrus
Yep.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Because now, yeah, everyone's got it.
Tyrus
Everyone's got it.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
We also government pumps so much money into college. You want to know why college is so expensive? Because of all the money that the federal government has pumped into it and all the other governments. Okay, so now we have kids that graduate with tens of thousands of dollars in debt and a degree that they don't know what they're going to do with.
Tyrus
No, a lot of the times the agrees aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Gender studies. What are you going to do with it?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, I mean, yeah, what are you.
Tyrus
Going to do with it?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I saw a meme one day. It was, it was two guys like side by side in this picture. And one dude's got a beret and he's drinking a bottle of wine. He's all happy and he's partying, you know, and the caption under his says, you know, has, has some sort of like degree in philosophy. Again, nothing wrong with that.
Tyrus
No.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, but whatever, you know, some sort of a degree, $100,000 in debt, can't get a job, lives in his mom's basement. The other dude's an electrician, like a lineman. Electrical lineman, you know, went to trade school, no student debt, makes $85,000 a year. About to turn off that dude's, you know, and this, this dude thinks, you know, anyone who doesn't go to college is, is beneath him. About to turn off that dude's electricity.
Tyrus
Yep.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, and, and again, we just need all of it. We need the philosophers, but we also need the linemen.
Tyrus
Yeah. You know what? And I, I, I see that when I look at, especially when you look at inner cities. And it doesn't, it's not A minority thing. It's not a white thing. It's a. It's an opportunity thing.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Exactly.
Tyrus
And this idea, like, I. I continued my education because I wanted to play football, like, as much as I like science and stuff. And I'm the same, I'll be honest with you.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Which I'm kind of. I'm kind of embarrassed by that now, but it's true.
Tyrus
Yeah. I look back and I was like, yeah, I liked it, but I didn't, you know, it wasn't my passion. And, you know, I'm dyslexic, so there was a lot of doors that kind of got a little closed for me. And some of the, you know, you think you're writing it the right way, and then the, you know, the teacher reads it up and letters are backwards and, like, how are you going to write a paper on a biological study if you can't, if your penmanship's awful, if your grammar is incorrect? So I got really turned off by that. And as I got older, the classes got smarter, and I couldn't really, you know, just being. I couldn't compete with the more specialized. Yeah, they would just, you know, they were quicker and better at it, But I was, you know, but my goal was I'd play football, so I would. And then I just found the easiest degree I could find that I felt was worth something.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That.
Tyrus
Which was teaching. I'd be a PE Teacher. That was my goal, and. Because I wasn't going to use it anyways because I was going to play in the NFL.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
So, you know, sounds like my plan is.
Tyrus
Yeah. You know, you just. You get that. Right? You know, and you get that mindset in your head because you're thinking of all the great things it's going to do for your family.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Oh.
Tyrus
Like, you're like, this is your opportunity to be the hero. I'm going to buy mom a sports car and dad a house. And then the reality hits one day that, you know What? There was 500 other thousand other guys across the country that all had that same dream, and there's only 100 jobs, you know, and. And they were all uber talented. Yeah. Everybody in there was one step away, one misstep, and something as silly as an injury, and all of a sudden, you're at the bottom of the pack.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
Because they had a guy who's just like you, and he's not hurt y. So. And then life. Life hits you in the mouth, and then you got to be able to fall back on your plan B. You Know, the, the, the good thing was, is I did take my studies serious. The, where I was in it, because you can't. You got to get good grades or you lose eligibility. So while you're there, you might as well remember some of it. And I look back on it now when I try to talk to young guys, when they do ask me, you know, because it's again, you want to do one thing and you, and it's. You want to do the NFL as well.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And you.
Tyrus
And you had some success there. It wasn't just, oh, hey, I'm going to walk over to WWE and become a star. Because that in itself is another miracle. Within it, there's another 500,000 guys fighting for 36 jobs, you know, so there's no, there's no guarantee. Now there's certain intangibles. When you're a foot taller than the average human being, you're going to get a look. But we've seen guys, I mean, I remember when we were in Anaheim, you met my buddy tiny, who was 7 2, and you're like, why is he here with us? And I want to say, go play basketball with us.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right?
Tyrus
You know, like, I love to. And Tiny, if you're watching, I love you. But we know, we know he's a great bodyguard, but you know, as far as his lateral movement stuff need a little work. But you've, you, you see that and then again you get there and just getting there is a success. Like I made it, but to turn it into a career and then at some point Father Time knocks on your door. And then we've seen it. We've seen, I call it. It's the worst wall in the world. The sad wall, where you see the guys who used to be on TV and it's just the worst feeling in the world is when you're like. And you know, and it's triple H or somebody and they're running a whole TV show. It's not like they're meaning to be insensitive. They have a billion dollar business to run and they got their guys to work with. And you see a guy on the wall, hey, can I get a dark match? Or you know, hey, boss, how you doing? And you see it and you're like, oh, that's not going to be me. Yeah, but it could be you. Just. And guys don't know when to let go or they can't let go. And, and, or you go to a signing and you see a guy at a table and it's completely empty and you're like, I don't want. But it's, it happens. It happens in every walk of life. Acting doesn't matter. When you choose an entertainment lifestyle, it can be over like that and then you, you're able to, to, to pivot into something else. I mean I ended up doing TV and stuff but again that's another career. And you went into public service. Doesn't people have to say, hey you know what? I believe in that guy. I'm going to give that guy my vote. And then you get in there and then you got to produce. You just can't be. Well, hey, I used to wrestle on tv. You know, you can't be that. You can't rest on those laurels. You have to use that. But you have to show them. You have to become mayor now. You know, was there during those processes and making those decisions and the last one is you, you were never what I would consider a flamboyant guy out of the ring. I don't think I ever went out one time where was like round the house on me boys and you know, like I'm staying at the finest hotels this weekend. Private jet and four buses. That was not you.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
No, no.
Tyrus
Every dime went home.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And if you had any brains and you would. And that was one of the reasons why I admired you so much is that you were one of the very few guys who would come in the locker room and you'd see guys starting to get a little success and the first thing you do is like save your money. You don't know how long this is going to go. It could change because you can go for. And, and people don't understand the way WWE works. It's, I think it's changed a little bit now. But before like you had your downside, you had your contract and if I.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Got there, you didn't even have that.
Tyrus
No, no, it was just, I mean it was just you.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It was literally, it was almost, you know, you eat what you kill. You know, if you got hurt, you know, there was no guarantee that you would still get paid. That was just how the business was.
Tyrus
No, I remember because Hacksaw Jim Duggan had tore his Achilles during his big feud with Haku when they were fighting for the crown.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And he was hobbling on one legged their entire thing. But Haku took care of the two of them. Were like, hey look, if you go home, we don't have a feud anymore. They're not letting me out. I'm out. We're both out. So here's what we're gonna do, I'm gonna work your leg for the next year while you get better. And the two. But that's what the guys had to do back then. It's nice, the changes now to where guys are protected a little bit. But you had to come in, you catch a draw, but you had to be careful with that draw because then you'd be owing money. And then you come home with, well, I use my pay for a hotel car. Because you had to take.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, that happened. You know, I remember again, this is when I very first started. Yeah, you. You would get a draw, which is just cash up front. And I remember Mr. White.
Tyrus
Mr. Tim White.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I remember once, yeah, I got my check and there was a negative.
Tyrus
I.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Business was not very good at that point. Changed shortly afterwards.
Tyrus
DDS wasn't. DDS wasn't hitting like he should have. Exactly. He wasn't making cane money. No, no. I got the negative, too. I was on a developmental deal. I got called up for a Christmas show for two weeks. I about killed Scotty Toddy in the ring with a clothesline that outlawed in eight different states. And Mr. White came up to me, and he's like, get your draw. And he gave me 500 bucks. And I was only making 500 a week at the time, but I was like, oh, this is great. This is free money come Tuesday. My check said 0.00. And I was like. I was like.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I remember.
Tyrus
I think Bucci was the head guy. He was the telephone. I said, hey, there's something wrong with my check. He's like, no, you gotta draw. He's like, what? I said. And he goes, but don't I get.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Paid on top of it?
Tyrus
Yeah. I was like, well, didn't I? He's like, you didn't work. You took his head off. We should be sending you more money. You know. I was like.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I remember.
Tyrus
Dean Malenko was like, I'd punch you in the mouth if I didn't think you'd kill me. And it's not a compliment, kid. Like, I was. So I remember those.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Those.
Tyrus
Oh, the negative checks. But you would. And then. But the other ugly thing is that you would get your downside. And if you were hot. And when the Funkosaurus first came out, I had out earned my downside. And, like, I think my year contract was out. I out earned it in two months, right? So I'm just making all this money and everything's coming in, and then I forget who the hell I pissed off. I got pulled off the road for About a month. And there was tv. I was just sitting and catering. You know, just wait. Even one time you're like, why the hell aren't you working? I was like, beats me boss. Well, I gotta work five shows tonight. Get your big ass out there. And I was like, I'd love to. I could use the check. And I remember the check would come and it was negative 000 again. And I was like, what's going on? He's like, well, you out earned your contract so you didn't work so you don't get paid. And people don't realize how much of that affects you going into like when you're trying, like they think it's all glamorous and great and then the reality is, you know, and then when it's over, a lot of times the guys. And I hate to say this but not everyone was listening to you in the locker room, you know, not everybody was because they also saw guys who had million dollar downsides and they wanted to be like the scene. And again, those guys earn that money and they're there because the reason why they're there. But they would see that stuff and they're like, well, that's going to be me.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And I want to compete with those guys.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
I want to have the new clothes and the new cars and. And then something happens and you don't have it anymore. And then you don't have that plan. But a few, a select few are able to continue to grow. You continue to grow even to the point where you didn't need to anymore because you really don't need to be in politics. This is a choice.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, that's true. You know, for me, my life, my life has all seriously been about overcoming failures, you know.
Tyrus
Yeah, that is the.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, like.
Tyrus
Can you say that again?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
My life's been about overcoming failures. You know, people look at me, I think and they see this snapshot of where I am now. They have not seen the entire movie and the entire movie is not pretty. I wanted to play college basketball.
Tyrus
That's.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's what I. That's what I played in high school. I didn't play football in high school. I had to lift weights. I was being pole. But you know, I get to my senior year, I'm getting a few D1 scholarship offers, you know, went up for a rebound, came down another dude's foot turned my ankle or tore liggin's ankle, ended my D1 scholarship offers.
Tyrus
Like that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yep. Yeah. No, I mean seriously.
Tyrus
Yeah. No, no, trust me.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yep. So then I ended up going to a D2 school, playing basketball. It was, you know, good academic school, you know, but again, you know, I wanted to play sports, man. You know, and I wanted to play sports at the highest level that I could, ever since I was a little kid. That was my dream. So anyway, and I knew I played in the NBA, but, man, I put on a lot of weight, started lifting weights in college, started eating, like, to do both, right? You know, so the football coach actually recruited me to play football. And, you know, he's like, son, you're not gonna play in the NBA. Like, I know that, but, you know, with your size, you know, why you run up and down a basketball court at 290 pounds. You know, you play football. So, man, I was, you know, I was big, fast.
Tyrus
I was long, which long.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
As an offensive lineman, arms are long.
Tyrus
If you're long, you're gonna get a phone call.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Good ladder movement. Playing basketball for all those years, I.
Tyrus
Mean, drop steps, great for protection.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And I never. I'll never forget. I mean, we've got. I mean, I'm looking out on practice one day, you know, there's a scout from the Indianapolis Colts over there, you know, and then there's this guy. I remember I got a letter from the Dallas Cowboys, and then I got to work out with the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach, and all this stuff's happening then. Then we're putting in trick plays for that weekend's game. Not even no contact. Walking through this play, I wasn't even wearing my helmet or shoulder pads, all right? And I stepped in a hole on the field and blew out my knee. You talk about life turning, right? Yep. And that. That was literally. I went to the Bears camp, but I couldn't pass physical because of my knee. And that was it. I mean, that. You know, all those dreams just evaporated right there, you know? And for me, I'd always been kind of a fan of. Of professional wrestling. You know, I wasn't, like, super passionate about it, but I was a fan. You know, my buddy just. We're watching one night, my buddy said, you should try that. And I figured I really didn't have anything to lose, you know? So for me, it's been about. Overcame failures and about the ability to step outside of my comfort zone. And I think that, yes, there are some people who are just so naturally gifted to something. They get all the.
Tyrus
They just pick up the ball. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's literally one in a billion, right? It ain't everybody. For most people, you're Going to fail at a lot of stuff before you actually get that break. And you have to make the break for yourself. You know, I always talk about our economy here in the free market economy and how you get opportunities. You don't get opportunities. You create the opportunities for yourself, you know, and you do that through hard work. You do that through getting back up after you've got knocked down. And persistence, determination, that's what it takes. You know, that sweat equity, there is no replacement for that. You know, and we were talking earlier about, you know, the. The generation coming up. And look, I think every generation says that about this.
Tyrus
Yeah. You know, we can't, because we have to.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
You know, the boomers are over us. So, you know, that's. We got. There's a high bar.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's one thing that I would tell young people is. Yeah. You know, these things that. These things that we have now, they were created by people. They weren't given. You know, they're not like a feature, a natural resource. They were created by folks, you know, and eventually you're going to have to work, you're going to have to go through that same process of fail, getting back on your feet and hard work to become successful in what you want to do. It's that simple. There's no magic formula.
Tyrus
There really isn't. And it's funny because, again, I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for you. Not just wrestling career, but a lot of our stuff mirrored. I can remember the first time I was at practice and it was a scout from the Jets.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And everyone was like, who are they looking at? And then every time I got in the stance, his little paper came out. And then my office alignment coach said, if you can keep your head down, you're playing on Sundays. And this some bitch gonna take me to dinner.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
And I was like, of course. That play, I stood straight up, you know? Cause I was like. And then we had a running back come in. We had a running back who had NFL speed, but he had a horrible work ethic.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And I remember the scout came because he was a class above me. And the scout's like, I'm not usually in the business of looking at juniors, kid, but can you get that guy in shape? You know, because he was in the weight room and 225, which, you know, we still got. We made a little video. Mandani video.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
Appreciate that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
And you know, I always had a really good. Really good bench. I think I was. I was Just practicing, you know, I was like, the goal. I think I got 32 reps or whatever. Of course, there's a scout there, so you're gonna. Of course, you're acting casual. You know, it's like a pretty girl in the room. And all of a sudden, everyone's all, yeah, like, oh, excuse me while I bench this car, you know, and they gained the game. And then there was a charger guy at the game, and. And my coach is like, hey, man, you got a letter from the New England Patriots, your favorite team. Like, what are you gonna do? You know, don't screw this up, kid. And everything was great. And then we're playing. And we're playing Kansas, and they had that Omni turf, and I'm just stepping to get a linebacker. Linebacker's eyes were already like that. I had already trucked him three other plays. We had four straight first downs inside the 20. And I step and I hear, yeah. And I'm just like. I don't. I can't extend my knee. I don't know why I can't extend it. And it was. It was a horrible tear. I tore three things in one and within. By the time I got the crutches on, I'm looking in the stands, and I don't even see the jackets anymore.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
Like, it's. It's that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right.
Tyrus
And you easily fall into a depression and anger. Yep. You know, and me, too, man.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I was.
Tyrus
I became. I went from the guy who had all the jokes in the locker room to where I made the locker room uncomfortable because I'm just staring at the ground all the time, and I see the guy playing my position. Who. Who. Guy I bled and sweat with for. For the last two years. Now I hate him.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
You know, because I'm out. I missed four games. And they're like, we'll do surgery. And then I decide I don't want it. It's just my meniscus. And it's just another thing. I could play through it because I had to get back. I had to get those scouts back.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Right. Right.
Tyrus
You know, and then when it's. It doesn't happen, then you start. I was playing arena football, you know, and then finally get things going. I had. I played in the Tri City Diesel. I was played for them, and I was just throwing guys around. So I got some looks again. I get a call from Louisville, Texas, saying, why don't you come down to Cowboys camp? Train here, and we're gonna try out for you, and everything's going great. And I'm all of a sudden now, Buffalo Bills want to bring you in Toronto if Canada is interested. And I got. I got an agent. All of a sudden, everything is going great. And it Walk through same walkthrough. Just some past protection stuff. Guy hits me in the stomach. I pop him in the head. We got a little scuffle. I'm like, oh, he hit me pretty good in the rib. I don't know what's going on. And I went to the. We were in Dallas, and we went to the Times Square that night. I'm like, man, my side's still bugging me. And he's like, I'm too big for him to hurt my rib. I'm trying to figure out what it is. And I remember this woman, whoever she is, it's not your fault, but she was talking to me. And I just remember sitting there going, oh, my God, my stuff is killing me. She's like, I don't. Like, I. You know, I was a designer. I'm a producer, and I was just. Can you please stop talking to me? Like, I'm sure you're pretty. I can't see right now. My buddies walked over me like, you're pale. Like, something's not wrong. We're gonna. We had to go to four emergency rooms because no one. They didn't know what was wrong with me. Like, go sleep it off. You probably had too much to drink or something. And finally, a little old janitor lady was like, hey, baby, can you stand on one foot? And I couldn't. I ruptured my appendix during walkthrough, and the most weirdest. And it bled, but it bled into my leg. And if it went the other way, if it went up, I would have died. So I had this emergency. They got it all out and everything. And while they were doing it, they cut nerve endings going into my left knee or into my left leg. So after everything's done, I go out to, you know. And again, six weeks. Oh, no. I'll be back in two, because I got. I got to get, you know, the Cowboys interested in me. I can't. You know, I can't miss time. I was, like, underwater. I couldn't breathe. I got guys half my size running around me. Had the worst game ever. And it was done. It was like, that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It was over.
Tyrus
It was done. Like, that's it. Next guy up. Even their arena football team was like, well, I mean, you got you to rehab. You came back too soon, and we really don't have the budget for that. And tell you what we're going to do, we'll give you, we'll fly you back to wherever you want to go. And then next season, if you feel good and you're just like, you're not hearing any of that. All you're hearing is, it's over.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Y.
Tyrus
It's over. It's over. And then it can go horrible, it can go off to another path. And we've seen that. And that, that ability for certain members of us to go, this sucks. I hate this feeling. What am I going to do about. It was there for me. It was always not wanting to be what I was told I was going to be. You're going to be just like your father. You're going to be another brother in the street, in and out of jail. You know, you're going to sell drugs, you're going to like, you're going to be just like him. Even though I never met him, but I was always, that was the bar. So I always fought not to be that. I'm. I'll show you. Was there someone in your life that you were like. Whether it didn't have to be. Mine was always negative. Like, there can be someone who, like, you just wanted to be like someone that you grew up around that was always striving for better. Was it, was it older brothers and sister? Was it family? Was it just. Or was it just something in you?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, it was. For me, it was just, you know, again, it was just that, that dream that I had, you know, that I, I just wasn't willing to let go of it. Right.
Tyrus
Yeah, me either. It's like, okay, fine, this road, this door. Okay, Wrestling door. Okay. I grew. I, I, I know everybody's name, except I didn't know what gimmick meant, but I wasn't supposed to. I wasn't supposed to, but, you know, I never.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. And, you know, it's also like we were talking about, you know, it's also thinking about, man, I just want to be able to, you know, the people I love, I should be able to take care of them.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, and now, like, with this job, you know, man, I look back at my life and I think, golly, you know, I, I grew up on, I grew up on a farm, man, like five miles outside of a town of 300 people. There was nothing going on there, you know, and my family is better off than most because my dad's 21 year military veteran, so he had his, his retirement, you know, and then he worked hard and mainly in factories, got laid off. And all that stuff, but we were better off than most folks, you know, but the reason is most folks dirt poor. But, you know, but. But thinking about that and, you know, like, I got hand me down clothes for my brother. Brother's bigger than I am, thankfully. You know, my mom always cut my hair all through, you know, all through my.
Tyrus
How was it getting shoes? Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was fun. Shoes. I think we were. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I mean, seriously, like, my shoes. You know, my shoes came from, like, Dollar General.
Tyrus
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I got the Kmart, which is fine.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, but it. It felt like often that. That our. My family was just struggling to keep our head above water. My man, my. My mom and dad work so hard, you know, and I just. I wanted to be able to take care of my family, you know, and take care of them, too, you know, in. In a way that I have. Actually, what drove me was kind of this paranoia about, you know, I'm never going to have any money. I'm always going to be working my butt off, you know, just living paycheck to paycheck, you know, barely getting by, barely scraping by, you know, and again, we weren't really like that, but I could see if a couple of things went wrong. Yeah, that's where we would go, you know, and that's almost what drove me. And then I think now, you know, man, I grew up. I grew up there. I found something I was good at. A niche thing, really. You know, travel the world, entertained all these people, man. I have people come out to me now, and I'm sure you're the same that, you know, thank me for years of entertainment.
Tyrus
Yeah, I feel real old when that. When I used to dance in the ring with you. I'm like, 35, bro.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You think about that and you realize the impact was actually the emotional impact that you had on them, Right?
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, and sometimes one of you know, I don't know if you've ever seen me talk about this, you know, one of the most powerful. Crystal and I were at a concert in Knoxville. Yeah. When this lady comes up to me and shows me a picture on her phone. It was me and her son at Children's Hospital. It's like that was the last picture she had of her son. He was still alive, you know, And I realized, oh, my God, that that's the actual blessing out of all this.
Tyrus
You were his. You were his dream and his hero.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
People from what is sometimes this horrible situation into this fantasy world. You make fun of professional wrestling all you Want. All right, but here's the deal. You take people who are in horrible situations and you bring them to this fantasy world of larger than life characters they can forget about all the terrorists.
Tyrus
To see every week. Yeah, yeah. It's not like boxing.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It's not like, you know, and I.
Tyrus
Got, man, for two hours a night, you get to forget it all.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I was able to experience all that, you know, and that's why I do this. Because I want to make sure that to the extent that I can, that not. So it's my kids, they're, they're good. But my grandkids and my great caring kids, that they still have that America and your community and then our. Yes, I mean everybody, you know, but those generations that they can take their gifts and they can use them and they can make their lives better and they can make the world a better place.
Tyrus
From a guy who has failed enough times to know, hey, and you're pretty. I've been fired by the best.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I mean, yeah, you fail, you know, but the beauty of America, the beauty of the free enterprise system is no one holds that against you.
Tyrus
No, you just get back up and try. This is the one place that you can keep on in the course of your lifetime. You can go from walking around a farm to like financialism superstar. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It's crazy. Yes.
Tyrus
And now you know, you know what? It's, it's your pot. And you're always a humble guy. So you'll, you'll immediately disagree with me this. But, but you are one of the more most popular mayors in this country. People talk about you quite a bit. I don't know if you're aware of that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I just try to do the right thing.
Tyrus
Which leads me to the next question.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
When you do the right thing, that seems to be pisses a lot of.
Tyrus
The wrong people off.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, the bad part is at this point, I take as much as much satisfaction in ticking off the wrong people. Almost as I did.
Tyrus
Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Because you know, if you're, if these people are mad at you, you're doing something right.
Tyrus
Right. And I, because I'll get, you know, I'll get it where I work. I get it. And one of the things like, look, I know what you cheer for. Your booze give me self esteem. So keep them coming.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It's almost that heel thing for us.
Tyrus
Yeah, I know how to work crowd, brother. So you got it now. I, I, I, I, I said this before. I, and you, you always kind of, you always like, I don't know, I'm focused on the job that I have right now. But given the success that you're having, it's not a crazy thing, you know, especially with. There really isn't. I don't think a front runner going into the Republican Party or independents or anything, honestly, across the board is the White House. Something you've. I mean, I know I've asked you this every time I see you, and you always tell me the same thing. I'm worried about what I'm doing in front of me, which I respect, but you've got to hear the. I hear it all the, like, people like, hey, you know, every time, you know, two brothers, we were supposed to be moving a lot of celebrities out. We're working on that. We're working on that. Two brothers in a truck. We still have the side hustles. This is a little slow right now because none of them want to go. We, you know, we got. We sent a couple to Ireland and a couple England, but, you know, we'll get the rest of them. But. But it's you. You hear it all the time. Because I think the. The reason why people are drawn to is not because you. What you did in your wrestling career is you're one of the very few politicians that when you speak, they hear the truth.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. Like, you don't.
Tyrus
You're not going to. You're not going to tell them it. You know, it's not going to tell them it's rain coming down their back when they're being pissed on, you know, And I think that's. It's very similar. President Trump, same kind of. Same kind of dude. He tells you what you want to hear, whether you like it or not. And it's a rare quality, especially in politics, because most people in politics, the job is just get reelected. And I don't get that from you at all. Like, I'm going to do what I feel is best and let the chips fall where they may. And I think Americans really get behind that.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, you just hit the nail on the head, man. I mean, I'm going to do what's right, or at least, you know, what I think is right, and that's my guide. And if I don't get reelected or whatever, you know, that's fine. I'm always going to be Kane.
Tyrus
Right.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You know, so I got something to fall back on. I don't need, you know, I don't need, like, the fame.
Tyrus
Right.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Because I've already. I already have that, you know, so, yeah, I. I get to do the right thing. I'm not some people get addicted to power, you know, I'm not. I mean, actually, I know and I.
Tyrus
Tell people what to do. You were a top guy in the WWE for attitude error. My are the non. The PG error. You could have called your own shots. You could have easily had the cane bus all those. You could without question. You could have seen young guys like me, especially young big guys coming in. You could have been like, oh, you know, you were never that guy ever.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
It's also, you know, my philosophy has always been it's about the team. And I guess that's, you know, we're offensive line.
Tyrus
Yeah. So we all want everyone to do well. Yes.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
But we also not the guy. You know, the only time you ever.
Tyrus
Hear we're never sexy. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
And the only time you ever hear that number called. Exactly. You know, so for us, you know, I was the same in basketball, you know, I mean, I was good in basketball, but, you know, I wasn't like the glamour player. You know, I was rebounder. I was inside, you know, that stuff. That's just how my athletic career was, you know, so for me it was always and it is now, it's about the team, it's about the success of the organization and wherever if I get fit into there, that's great. But the most important thing is the organization successful because if the organization is not successful, I will not be successful. You know. And you know, to me, when you think about leadership and I study all these things I read about all the time, that's the most important thing is, you know, the organization and the team. You take care of your team because your team is the one that makes organization successful. If the organization is successful, you're successful, team win, you know, if not, there's no point. There's no point in you being there.
Tyrus
And your leadership is very subtle. You don't raise your voice. And again, the reason why. And I was trying to keep as much wrestling stories, but still my favorite. And there's a lot of story for a guy who's only been in a battle royal with you. And we were in a tag team match against each other one time and we were, I think we were in. I think we were in France. It was me and Alberto Edge was her.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, I remember this.
Tyrus
And I grabbed you because Alberto's coming with the cane. But something happened in the match to where he got banged up a little bit. But he had this crazy look in his eye and I remember as he had that big kendo stick and he's coming and you just Said in the calmest voice, got all these people screaming. It's a sold out arena. And you're like, if I was you, I'd duck. And I went. And I literally went, what? And as I went, what? You ducked? And that thing hit me. Bing. And I just was like. I got back to the.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I was just thinking about that the other day.
Tyrus
We're both looking at him.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
He's got.
Tyrus
He just lost his mind. Yeah, yeah. And I'm like, well, kid, I was you. I duck it as you ducked. I went home and I didn't even have time to look up. Bang. Get back to the locker room. My eyes red, swollen shut. And there was no mirrors. And you just looked at. Oh, man, you want my mask? And I see Alberto come. I think he was his, you know. You know, there's always. He was so feeling the stress of like, you know. Yeah, he was getting ready. He's supposed to go over mania and be the next champ. And he was kind of every match, you know, there's one thing was wrong, so. And he came through. And I was like, man, it really hurts right here. And he's like, I don't see anything. And I was like, are you sure? And he was like, no, it's fine. I looked at the kendo stick. You could see the candlesticks broke. It's not. It's hard to break a kendo stick on somebody's face. And I was just like, that is my favorite because it was. It was. It was. It was like a whisper. The fact that I even heard it. Whole place was going crazy. You know, it probably messed you up.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Too, because you're like, what you say?
Tyrus
Yeah, because I did. Because if I was looking, I would have went the other way. But because. Because you dropped that. You slid out and you know, it's not like I'm holding you down here. You're.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
You're taller than I am.
Tyrus
And so when you slipped out, I just went, what did you say? And I. Oh, geez.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
There is something to be said for self preservation.
Tyrus
Yes, yes, yes. Cooler heads did prevail. And eventually when we finally got back to the dressing room and I went. And I was like. And he was like, the crowd pops. Yeah, thanks, man. We'll do it again tomorrow night. No, we not. We're not. He's. I'll take the choke slam before I'm taking that bad boy. But hey, man, I just. Thank you so much for. For coming in today. And I know because you. We also are going to hang out in the gut Feel show tonight.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, it's going to be fun. Which.
Tyrus
It's funny because last time. Well, you've been on more times that. But the time we had Taker and you on with Brothers of Destruction on, and you cracked a joke. And I remember Taker looked at me, he's like, when did he get funny? I said, no, he always got one good one. And you know, he's proud of it because no one's laughing. Everyone's laughing, but he is so proud of himself. You can see his face light up because, oh, here's my spot. And now you can see him. He would never do it as a wrestler, but when he's in that chair. And I was like, his little face got red and then he's dropped that line. And we were like, what? Yeah. And he was like, yeah, hey, man.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I got my jab. And I think it was on the. On the View. Yes.
Tyrus
Yes, it was. Yeah, it was amazing.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
I remember he looked at me, he's.
Tyrus
Like, bro, going hard.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That. I was like, hey, man, if you know all the views I'm taking, you would. But it was.
Tyrus
And that's one of the coolest things is being able to do again. I couldn't tell you how I ended up here, but to be able to be able to see.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Let me tell you something. You know, when I'm back home, I have people all the time come up and say, you know, I love you on. On Gutfeld. And they'll always ask me, what's Tyrus like? You know, man, he's so smart. Common sense, you know, you've been able to do what you. What you do because you're. You're very good at it. You're very talented, you know, so just. My hat's off to you because, you know, you also came out of the wrestling business, figured out something that you were good at, and you're doing it very well. And people notice that.
Tyrus
And it's from the wrestling business because the worst I remember, I cut a promo one time and Arn came over, he goes, big guy can cut a promo. It's like cows with balls. We don't need them. Be quiet, cross your arms. Beat up. You're monster, you mean. I need you on the can. I got guys this big on the can. And I was. He's like, but in the locker room, it's great. But out there, keep it. Keep it simple. Like, we don't. No one wants a six, eight Nostradamus out there. Like, keep it simple. And. And it's funny because now when I talk, he's like, I always told you you should have talked.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
So you know what? 601. But it has been one of the coolest things is being able to still have that connection.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
And also to show the world that we're not just a bunch of pretty faces.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah.
Tyrus
There's a lot of accomplished, brilliant minds who have spent more time with Americans. I don't think anyone spends more times with. With Americans than wrestlers do. Because we travel the country and they don't know about the house shows and the diners and the towns and. And the. The. The what they give up to be able to go out there. And so when you talk about the people, who knows them better than. Because you're. Doesn't matter if it's Mexico or Wisconsin, you got to get cheers and booze and know everybody. And I think that's. I think that helps us a lot of reasons. That's where common sense comes from. Because when you got to make a lot of towns at night, the only thing that's going to get you around and keep you surviving, keep your head going, is by using your noggin. So.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
Anytime. You know, because it's been. Chris Jericho's been on. He's been brilliant. Aaron Damian. I. He's, you know, I always have him on. You, of course, with what you're doing, your stuff. We've had so many. Of course, getting Brothers of Destructions on. Couldn't have booked it. There's an indie show in all over America. Like, how can we get that? But it was really cool. And I'm still trying to get. I've had swagger on and. And I think we're trying to do some stuff to get Dolph. Dolph, a little political, little hot bag. Yeah. He's done some stuff, but it's nice for guys to see that. And big, I think Seth, when his career is done, I think he'll. He's going to do well. You know, he's. He's never seen a microphone he didn't like. That's very true. But he's. He's extremely talented guy. Very smart, very cerebral. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
So. And you're right, man. And for me, that's one of the most rewarding things. You know, when I first started, there was still that stigma that we're basically porn star, wrestler.
Tyrus
And it wasn't. It was neck and neck. Yeah.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah. And now it's like, you know, because of. Especially think about, like, you know, all the success that you know, seen his hat or Dwayne's had, you know, that's, that's really, I think broken that, you know, but again, it's just rewarding now to think, you know, that folks look at us as talented people as opposed to kind of, you know, we're no.
Tyrus
Longer in the side show.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Yeah, exactly.
Tyrus
And it's. And you're opening the doors for other. Because every time somebody calls me, I'm like, brooke, I'll have you on here in a second. What do you want to do?
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That.
Tyrus
That's great, you know, because I always think it's important to leave the door. You don't leave it open, you got to pull it open yourself. And when you get in there, you gotta, you gotta always tell guys, I'll point you to the door, but when you walk through it, you gotta establish yourself exactly. You know, no one's, no one's gonna give it to you, especially, you know, and, and you can't rest on what you did. Well, I was six time United States champion. That means no, no one cares, you know, but it's, it's, it's been a hell of a ride and I'm excited to see where things keep going. And of course again, you didn't answer, but you never do. But I would not be surprised at some point of higher offices. But again, like I said, you're gonna, you're. And this is a kids, this is take care of the job you have now, not the one you want tomorrow. Because if your head's in the cloud, you'll lose what you have.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
That's right.
Tyrus
So.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Exactly right.
Tyrus
Well, again, man, thank you so much. I'll see you in a few hours.
Glenn Jacobs (Kane)
Sounds good. Thanks, brother. Sat.
